Sestanek vojaških in civilnih vodnikov narodne obrambe je sklical obrambni tajnik Gates Po ipredhodnem razgovoru s P red sednikom E i senh o wer j em. Vojaški krogi eo bili do sedaj pametni. Vse to mu nič ni pomagalo. Tatari so mu izžgali oči. Govorili so potihoma. Navy’s halfback, Joe Bellino, also is an outstanding catcher and outfielder. He batted .428 for the Middies in 1959 and .320 this year. Regarded as a good major league prospect. Bellino turned down several bonus offers to pursue a Naval Chreer. Power Broke Assist Mark: Vic Power of the Indians, one of the accomplished masters of the first baseman’s mitt, set a major league fielding record for his position last season by handling one or more assists in a stretch of 16 consecutive games. Power broke the mark of 13 straight games set by George Sisler, Hall of Fame firsit baseman of the St. Louis Browns. One thing has changed decidedly since Sisler’s day — the mitt. Peerless George used a glove that resembled a small pillow. Power and the other first sackers now do their fielding with a claw glove that closes on a ball almost automatically. Siren Test on National CD Day, December 7 The Cuyahoga County Civil Defense air raid sirens will be tested on V/ednesday, December 7, at 2:00 p.m., it was announced by John J. Pokorny, County Civil Defense Coordinator. This test is being held as part of the observance of National Civil Defense Day and Pearl Harbor Day, December 7. The theme for the observance this year is “Peace through Preparedness.” Promptly at 2:00 p.m. the “Alert’’ signal will sound for two minutes. This signal, a high pitched steady blast on the sirens means to Ibitcn to radio and television stations for instructions and information in real emergency. After a wait of one minute the “Take Cover” signal will be heard for two minutes. This is an up and down or wailing sound on the sir ens and means to seek the besit available shelter as soon as it is heard at any time other than ; scheduled test. No public participation is request ed during the test, which will trigger the entire system of 133 sirens The policy of nesting the system about every eight weeks was established the first of the year by the Mayors Advisory Committee for Cuyahoga County Civil Defease. Through this method of testing the rystem any mal-function of the sirens is noted by spotters stationed at or near each installation throughout the county. Should any siren not function properly, a report made immediately to tlve Office of Civil Defense. Use Christmas Seals In spite of continuing progress against tuberculosis, local figures are staggering. There are 6,905 known cases of TB in Guyalhoga County today. Ten hundred and ninety-six new cases were reported last year. Cost of TB to the public in Cuyahoga County during 1958 approxLnated $7,754,000 — more than enough, for instance, to pay the cost of the proposed rapid transit extension to the airport. TB is a tremendous burden not only to its victims, but to every taxpayer as well. Now, at last, this burden can be lifted! Meeting at Arden House, New York, late this year, the nation’s top public health experts concluded that the elimination of tuberculosis is a practical goal — one which can be achieved in a single generation. They said miracle drugs are the magic tool and now is the time for an all-out push against the disease. In practical terms, this means a stepped-up search for early TB now through more free chest x-rays, an intensified search for the infected now through tuberculin testing of school children, new and imaginative use of drugs now, not only for treating all who are sick with TB but, also, for preventing development of active disease. Your contribution to the new Christmas Seal crusade will be most welcome — in any amount you choose. 5T. VITUS HOLS ml ^eklg ]&CVfcU5j SI. In the kit is a 36”x27” chart in color, showing pictures of the 114 dog breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club, together with data on physical characteristics, natural abilities, etc. Also included is a 60-page booklet entitled “Where to Buy, Board or Train a Dog,” which not only lists places throughout the country where a dog of the desired breed may he purchased, but also includes a great deal of useful information to answer the buyer’s questions concerning selection of his pet. “Which Dog for You” is the title of a section covering subjects such as: Is a large or small dog preferable; is a male or female dog most desirable; what are the relative advantages of long- and short-haired breeds? The booklet also carries special advice on buying a dog for a child and counsel on the care of the new puppy in the home. Thanksgiving is still to come, and by the time this letter reaches you, it will have passed. But on Thanksgiving Day I shall be wishing for each and all of you a day of deep rejoicing and of family reunion. In his proclamation setting aside Thursday, November 21th, as a day of national thanksgiving, President Eisenhower called upon all Americans to direct their thoughts to the peoples of other lands less fortunate than we, while giving thanks for our blessings. Let us hope that some day, under a benevolent Providence and through the best use of the world's God-given resources, each nation will have reason to celebrate its own thanksgiving day. *•>»«** SCHOLARSHIPS FOR COLLEGE STUDY A reminder to high-school seniors and their parents: Now is the time to get busy on a scholarship or on other financial help that may be needed for college! More than a quarter-million scholarships worth approximately $65 million are offered by colleges themselves. Thousands of other scholarships, some of which go begging, are offered by alumni groups, civic clubs, veterans’ groups and other organizations. At the same time loans are available for needy students through the National Defense Education Act. To find out what is available, specialists on scholarships make the following suggestions: (1) Get a catalogue of the college you want to attend. This will show the scholarships and other financial aid the college has to offer. (2) Check with your school principal or guidance counselor on outside scholarships offered by various civic or other organizations. <3) Write to the State School Superintendent for information on scholarships or other financial aids offered by the State Among the Guidebooks available on scholarships and financial aid offered by colleges and by outside sources are the following: “Financial Aids for College Students; Undergraduate”—a Government guide on what the colleges offer. It’s available for $1 from Superintendent of Documents, Government Printing Office, Washington 25, D. C. “Need a Lift?”—a compilation of outside sources of financial aid. It can be ordered for 15 cents from the Education and Scholarship Committee, American Legion, P.O. Box 1055, Indianapolis 6, Indiana. “Financing Higher Education”— a guide on loan plans offered by banks. It’s available free at many banks. If your oank doesn’t have one, it may be able to get one for you through the American Bankers Association. SMITHSONIAN RECEIVES FIRST RE-ENTRY CONE An Air Force Thor-Able re-entry vehicle, which safely returned from space last year, now has a place of honor in the National Air Museum of the Smithsonian Institute. The once “out of this world” nose cone, scarred but intact, presents a sharp contrast to the colorful and decorative kites, the first form of man-made aircraft, also on exhibit. The scorched, unglamorous space pioneer had travelled more than 5,000 miles down the Atlantic Missile range. In re-entering the earth’s atmosphere at four miles per second, it was exposed to friction heat above 11,700 degrees Fahrenheit. Lt. Gen. Bernard A. Schrie-ver, Commander, Air Research and Development Command, in presenting the nose cone to the Museum, referred to it as “one of the earliest implements of a new era.” Although designed as a weapon it “foreshadows future achievement in the peaceful arts of civilization, just as the first crude weapons of flint and metal did,” he said. “The techniques learned from military developments of this kind will help men on future flights to other planets'—and perhaps to other stars,” he predicted. r m The Bells of St. Mary*s ^iiihiiiniiiiiiiniMiiiiiiiiiEiiiiiimiiiihmiiiiimiciiimiiiimnriiiminihuiumiiiitiiiniiiiiiiihiiiiiiiiiiiickiiiiiiiim'iniiiiiiiiiiuiiiimiiiiit't- St. Mary’s P.T.U. Electoral College Meeting simultaneously with similar groups ip the other 49 states, the Ohio Electoral College will be convened by the Secretary of State in the State Capitol, Columbus, Monday, Dec. 19 to cast Ohio’s vote for President and Vice President. Each state convention of the two political parties chose 25 Presidential Electors last September (each state is allowed a number equal to the number of U. S. Senators and Congressmen from the state) and s.ince the Nixon-Lodge Presidential Electors won in the November 8 election in Ohio, the Republican Electors receiving this honor will cast their ballots for Vice President Nixon and former Ambassador Lodge. (They are morally bound to cast their ballots this way, although not legally bound.) Announcement that Ohio’s population gain shown by the 1960 census will give Ohio a 24th Congressman, will automatically increase Ohio’s Electoral College vote to 26 in 1964. The sum total of the Electoral College strength in 1960 is 537. The result of the Ohio Electoral College vote on December 19 will be forwabded by the Secretary of State, who will serve as Secretary of the College, to Washington. The electoral votes of all the states will be tallied in a joint session of the House and Senate on January 6 and it will become the duty of Vice President Richard M. Nixon, as presiding officer of the session, to announce the results. These Constitutional performances in Columbus and in the other states, and finally by the Congress, accentuates the fact, often misunderstood, that (1) Voters actually do not vote DIRECTLY for President or Vice President but rather for a “slate” of Presidential Electors and (2) that the winning or losing of the country’s popular vote does not necessarily determine the victor — that it is the capturing of the majority of the total of the nation’s electoral votes that count! Census Bureau lo Take Recreational Survey Here The second in a series of four sample surveys on the recreational activities of the American people will be conducted here starting Nov. 28, it was announced today by the Bureau of the Census, U. The recreation surveys are being carried out locally and In 329 other areas of the country by the Census Bureau for the Outdoor Recreation Resources Review Commission, a special temporary government body established by the Congress to recommend policies and programs to meet future needs for both public and private outdoor recreation opportunities. Members of a number of local families, selected by means of the Census Bureau’s scientific sampling program, will be- interviewed regarding their outdoor recreational activities. Topics to be covered include vacation trips away from home, other trips for outdoor recreation, other recreational activities, and family ownership or recreational equipment. Stahley, Honorary Chairman fbr the 1960 “Toys for Tots” Campaign. The purpose of the annual campaign, the 9th conducted by Marine Reservists here, is to make sure Christmas gifts of toys will be provided all less fortunate children in the Cleveland Area. Mr. Stahley said donations of new toys or toys in good condition are urgently needed. He said contributions of toys could be made by taking the toys to the nearest Shell Service Station and drop them in barrels provided by the stations. He pointed out that Retail and Wholesale stores wishing to donate large amounts of toys could arrange for a store pick-up by calling the Marine Corps Reserve Training Center, SU 1-5541. Mr. Stahley urged all school, church and civic groups to organize toy drives among their memberships, adding that the Marines would be glad to pick up these donations at any time. “All toys collected in the Cleveland Area will be distributed here,” Mr. Stahley said. “Although Toys for Tots is a nationwide Christmas Project of the Marine Corps Reserve, each campaign is purely a local project.” He said that the Kiwanis Club of Cleveland will collect toys at meetings, help provide publicity, and place posters in downtown business windows, plus aiding in the distribution of toys. The Volunteers of America will screen the needy families to assure that only those deserving will receive toyn, all families will be screened through the Welfare Federation. The Sheil Oil Company will make their Service Stations available as collection centers. Cleveland’s 11th Infantry Battalion, USMCR, will pick up toys at Shell Stations, paint, repair, and ready the toys for distribution. Needy families may apply at any Volunteers of America Store for toys. The toys will be distributed at Gray’s Armory, 1235 Erie Court, Cleveland, Ohio on Friday, the 16th of December. “Toys for Tots” was started by Marine Corps Reserve Units on the west coast in 1948, Mr. Stahley explained. Since that time, he said, the idea has been spread through-| out the country; now, millions of j toys are distributed each year to ! children who might otherwise fail to receive Christmas gifts.
