SLOVENSKA ŽUPNIJA SV. GREGORIJA VELIKEGA | ST. GREGORY THE GREAT SLOVENIAN CHURCH 23/60 Številka - Number / Leto - Year 9.6. 2024 10. NEDELJA MED LETOM 10TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Fr. Drago Gačnik, SDB ŽUPNIK - PASTOR NASLOV - ADDRESS 125 Centennial Pkwy N. Hamilton, ON L8E 1H8 PHONE: 905-561-5971 CELL: 905-520-2014 E-MAIL gregory_sdb@ stgregoryhamilton.ca HALL RENTALS 905-561-5971, ext. Jezus premaga Satana in ustanovi božje kraljestvo. Evangelij govori o Jezusu in odnosu drugih do njega. Poslušajo jo s preprostim in čistim srcem, z ljubeznijo in dobro voljo. On pa ob tej priložnosti pove, kdo so njegovi resnični sorodniki. - (prim. Oznanjevalec 2012, št. 3) 254 | VESTNIK 2024 10TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Response: With the Lord there is steadfast love, and great power to redeem. First Reading Genesis 3:9-15 Adam and Eve are tempted in the garden by the serpent. Second Reading 2 Corinthians 4:13-5:1 We believe that God, who raised the Lord Jesus to life, will raise us with Jesus in our turn, and that there is an everlasting home built by God for us, in the heavens. Gospel Mark 3:20-35 Jesus tells us that our sins will be forgiven and that everyone who does the will of God is a brother or sister or mother of Jesus. “If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.” Illustration There is a lot of “them” and “us” or “us” and “them” in our world. At the start of a documentary entitled Us and Them / The Story of Us, the actor, producer and narrator Morgan Freeman refers to his home state of Mississippi, where he feels a sense of belonging, not just to the land but to the people too. He experiences it in the way people talk, in the food they eat, and in the way they treat one another. But he also refers to the history of segregation in his state, where people were polarised into separate camps – into an “us” and a “them”. He recognises that there is still divi- sion, culturally and politically, in a world where people can barely talk to one another and where division spawns hate, and he wonders if this is part of human nature or if we can bridge the gap that separates “us” from “them”. His question is a challenging one. Parents and teachers often remark on how small children don’t “see” difference the way adults might and are naturally inclusive in their play. Yet the world in which these children grow up is undoubtedly divided – by race, nationality, geography, wealth, war, climate change and inequality – and children soon recognise division. This may make us wonder if we are destined to be divided and if it is impossible to preserve, nurture and restore inclusivity and unity. Are we inevitable victims of our self-created divisions, doomed to a cycle of war and destruction – not only of “them” but also of “us”? Gospel Teaching A sense of “us” and “them” prevails in today’s readings. The book of Genesis presents the intrusion of temptation and evil into the beautiful world God created. The harmony of the garden is shattered by the image of the man and woman and their offspring as enemies of the serpent and its offspring. We know from hearing many other Old Testament readings that this sense of “us” and “them” led to war and injustice, and that many prophets spoke God’s word in that context, attempting to encourage God’s people to do God’s will. In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus makes it clear that it is in doing God’s will that we are united. The scribes seem intent on “othering” Jesus – insinuating that “Beelzebub” or an “unclean spirit” is in him – thereby discouraging the crowd from listening to him. In an atmosphere of such division, Jesus is emphatic in his assertion that people who are divided can never stand. When people in the crowd tell him that his mother and brothers and sisters are outside asking for him, he gestures towards those who have been sitting listening to him and identifies them as his mother and brothers, saying that anyone who does the will of God is his brother and sister and mother. He refuses to see God’s family as polarised into “us” – his family – and “them” – not his family. Application There is nothing wrong with difference, and much of the richness of humanity stems from differences in personalities, places and cultures. Often the right thing to do is to protect such differences. But when we think in terms of “us” and “them”, we are usually looking at difference as something bad – the bad being in “them” rather than in “us”. We witness incitement to hatred and division in an “othering” of people who may be “different” from us but who should not be “less” than us. Much of this is deliberate, and can be seen in violence, war and the exploitation of resources for the gain of some but to the detriment of others. Sometimes it is less conscious, when people absorb biases and adopt behaviours that seem harmless but that may have an impact on others – excessive consumption that contributes to climate change, or a failure to recognise privilege we take for granted but that others do not have because of race, nationality, geographical location or disability. Jesus’ word throughout the Gospels leaves us in no doubt that God’s will is that we be united as one household rather than divided – that “us” can be composed of many “thems”. Perhaps today’s readings can encourage us to reflect on how, consciously or unconsciously, we exclude others by classifying them as “them” rather than “us”, and to try to discern what God wants us to do so that we may truly call ourselves one household, everyone the mother and brother and sister of Jesus, acting according to God’s will in our world. Are these peoCatholic college? What’s the Problem with Speaking about Catholic Values… 258 | VESTNIK 2024 So… where is this backlash against Butker coming from? I believe it comes from the ruling liberal elite. They feel that they are shepherding America (and the western world) with their own version of religion – a cocktail of selfishness, individualism, hedonism, materialism and narcissism. They have led ‘the sheep’ of American society into a culture that actually hates Catholic morality, Catholic education and family life. These critics act shocked that a Catholic athlete had the ‘gumption’ to speak to young adults at their commencement about keeping the priority of faith and family? The public outrage against Butker and Benedictine College reveals hatred for Catholic morality, Catholic education and family life. It also has caused conversations in Catholic circles including households where some say he went too far in his comments critical of Joe Biden or too cavalier in his praise of homemakers. What do I think? I say those criticisms also expose the problem with Catholics in our society. They have a fragile faith. They don’t like to have strong, clear moral truths expounded in public. Many Catholics have sold-out to the culture and feel that people like Butker (and Fr. Steve Ryan) should not be so straightforward in their words of witness. Secularists want priests, bishops and lay leaders who preach and teach with twists and turns that appease ideologues and cultural elites. Butker stood by his comments after several weeks of both praise and backlash. “If it wasn’t clear that the timeless Catholic values are hated by many, it is now,” he recently stated. The world needs far more men like Harrison Butker – not fewer. We need boldness and honesty. I just went on NFL.com and bought a Harrison Butker jersey. I now have a new shirt with his Chief’s number 7 on it. It’s a hot item and selling out right now. I’m inspired by Butker. He didn’t sell out the Gospel nor will I.
