Boston, 9. marca. Hopewell, N. J., 10. marca. Mrs. Anna Lindbergh postaja dnevno bolj slabotna. Vse take in enake govorice so brez vsake podlage in jih širijo le ignorantni ljudje. S tem načinom bo najmanj sitnosti in kredit bo odgovarjal v splošno v korist članu in Zvezi. Nikar ne imejte tisto navado: "Saj me tajnik pozna in bo že založil." Gostje Nove palače so začeli odhajati v obednice. "Ali so Vam znane take podrobnosti?" "In od takrat ni šel več v Sibirijo?" Kru-man Pompej je^ zapazil njegovo stanje. Z. ffetos On the S V Z, Soap *Bojcr CANDIDATES VIE FOR HIGH HONORS Responsibilities ONE of the greatest fallacies of all times, is that all of a man's responsibilities cease after his departure from this world. In most cases that is true, but not in all. It is his duty to see that those who were dependent upon him during his life, are provided for after he has gone. Of course, it is impossible to call him to task after his departure, but that, however, does not relieve him of the obligation. Much of the sorrow in this world is directly traceable to this. Men have passed on leaving behind destitute wife and children. Then follows a terrific struggle to keep body and soul together. The hard earned money is hardly enough to pro-yide for the barest necessities, and often times the children are deprived of an adequate education. They start off in this world handicapped. Insurance, however, has done much to lessen the number of such cases. It offers the man a positive way of providing for those he leaves behind. No matter how little insurance he carries, it at least is something for the family to work on until they can adjust themselves to the new circumstances. Too many men, hating the thought of death, put off the taking out of an-insurance policy until it is too late. They are the ones who will do everything tomorrow and nothing today. To them, tomorrow is always time enough. But there does come a time when there are no more tomorrows, and they find themselves +00 late to take out the policy. Regardless of the age or sex, the best time to insure yourself 'is RIGHT NOW And the younger the better. IN the matter of benefit associations, the Slovenian Mutual Benefit Association offers the. young folks the best possible insurance for their money. This is one of the direct results of the great amount of attention the heads of the organization have paid to the group. After a most careful study of their needs and requirements and financial position, they designed a policy which could best match all of these particulars. The 20-year paid life policy offers the youth a maximum amount of insurance with a minimum expenditure and still relieves them of the obligation of paying premiums all their life. It is well for candidates in the Essdeezee Election Campaign to bear this in mind when they are getting new members for their particular organization. You should feel that you are doing a favor to everyone you bring in as a member. You are getting him to make the best investment possible and use his money to its best advantage, besides bringing him in contact with all the social activities of your lodge. Socially and financially you are benefitting him by your interest, and some day he is bound to come to a realization of it and thank you for that interest. Experience proves that man's only regret in regard to insurance is that he did not take more of it when he was younger. Spare your friend this regret by getting him to join the Slovenian Mutual Benefit Association during the coming campaign. COMETS PLAN MANY SOCIAL AFFAIRS AT MONTHLY MEETING ENTHUSED OVER RACE CAMPAIGN FACTS Social Follows Regular Business Session at Home of Miss Rose Klemen In spite of the cold weather, last Monday night, a good crowd attended the meeting of the Comets lodge No. 54 SDZ, at the home of Miss Klemen, 16119 Waterloo Rd. Grdina, representatives of the paper, who explained in detail the style of the new campaign. She first said "How do you do" to the world at Livingston, 111., and she completed her altitudinal education at Euclid Central High School. Her one reason for attending school was algebra and her second English. At pi-esertt she busies herself with cooking and sewing, and she is anxiously waiting for the depression to subside so she can again take up "her brevity and mechanical writing position. She is a member of the Comets, Progressives and the Y. W. C. A. Club. Incidentally she is quite forward on the Progressive basketball team. Occasionally she wields a tennis racket, but she puts in a daily petition for strawberry shortcake, deluged with whipped cream. She plays the piano both by note and ear, and whilst at school she won the highest award in a music memory contest. Though she prefers the clas- sics, she would not miss reading a movie, housekeeping or geographic magazine. And she does like "Mood Indigo." Someone, she did not say who, is teaching her to drive a car, and she thinks that we will know the results, sooner or later. Foxtrots are her favorite dance numbers and she wants to go to Europe, even if she has to wear glasses for "see-sickness." Her man may be either light or dark, but he must have a good' character and he must be taller than five feet five. She succumbs to bridge; she retires between 10 and 12 each evening, and when a youngster she thought that she would be a nurse. 1 Her Sunday program includes a siesta, hike and several visits with friends, and if Robert Montgomery, John Gilbert or Clarke Gable are. on the screen, she is sure to drop into the theater. She calls her home in Euclid City a miniature farm, and she says that she would never live on a big farm. She does not like animals, so she must be a vegetarian. There are five girls in her family and people do not be- The candidates, representing the eight states in the country, are John Gornik from the state of Young Men; Mary Bambich, state of Martha Washington; Joseph Kogoy, Clairwood state; James Perot, state of Modern Crusaders; Helen Petrov of the State of Magic City Juniors; Michael Lah Jr., Eastern Star state; John Pustovrh, State of Golden Stars, and Mary Lebar, State of Comets. Backed by their respective lodges, the presidential aspirants are all planning their campaign programs, which they hope will successfully carry them to the coveted goal. Six months time, from April 1 to Sept. 31, is permitted them to realize their quota of a doubled membership. The one finishing with the greatest percentage of quota is elected president, • of course. The person finishing ■second is made vice president, while the remaining six make up the presidential cabinet. ' Their public titles will be secretary of state, secretary of ' war, secretary of education, ' secretary of health and the sec-i retary of the interior in the order in which they finish. | All quotas in the coming Essdeezee Election Campaign ' are based on the lodge member-| ship as of the month of March. ^ Under this rule then a candi-^ date will be obliged to obtain jlone new member for every old . member if he is to receive 1,000 votes in the campaign. Accordingly, the quota for John Gornik, representing the Slovenian Young Men's Club is . 50. That of Mary Bambic, leader of the Martha Washingtons is 75, while Joseph Kogoy, president of the Clairwoods, is out after 63. Ninety is the number set as the goal of James A. Perot of the Modern Crusaders. Helen Petrov, the Magic City Junior representative, has been assigned a quota of 21, while Michael Lah Jr., of the Eastern Stars is setting his cap for 39 new members. John Pustovrh of the Kent Golden Stars has a quota of 20 and that of Mary Lebar, Comets, is 19. Which one of these is going to be first to realize his quota? Who's going to be the first one to go over the top? And finally, who's going to be the first president of Essdeezee? Will it be a young man or a young lady? Back your own candidate and help his cause by getting more than your share of new members ! Presently am traveling through New York City, where I saw* the beautiful Statue of Liberty, as I went about the harbor of New York, where many of our daddies and mothers landed. Broadway is one of the longest and most magnificent business streets in the world, where I am doing most of my spring shopping. After my travels am going back to my friends for a rest and expect to return home on Sunday, April 3. I will appear at a dance at St. Christine's Auditorium, and will wear a beautiful Spanish outfit that I have bought at the Broadway Dress Shoppe, which 1 want all of you to see. Until then, 1 send you my regards and remain your MYSTERY GIRL. A tremendous celebration, lasting two days, is being planned by the Struggles, SNPJ lodge, on the occasion of their fifth anniversary. April 1(5 and 17 arc the dates for this mammoth anniversary party. Many out-of-town lodges have already signified their intention to attend. The feature of the first day, Saturday, April 16, will be an indoor game between the Strugglers and the Kenosha Stalwarts of Wisconsin. Dancing and card playing will be on that evening's program. You will also have an opportunity to meet your out-of-town friends. A wonderful program has been arranged for Sunday, April 17. Many popular radio stars, prominent speakers, well-known local singers and entertainers, and a playlet entitled "What Price Coal" will feature the afternoon's entertainment. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Von Berchtold, better known as "Jack and Jill," radio artists of WTAM, will be an added attraction. Dancing in both halls to the best music in town will conclude this gala affair in the evening. The Slovenian Workingmen's Home will be the scene of this two-day celebration. That is a personal question, and you are not obliged to answer it, however, if you do possess $350 you are going to Jugoslavia this summer, You may laugh and think this is a cellophane fairy tale, but that will be the actual cost of the official tour, which will be made by^the American Jugoslav Tourists Club. The expenditure includes the round-trip steamship ticket, emigration fees, transportation to New York and back, all travel and hotel accommodations during the six-week sojourn abroad. But, besides making possible these drastically low expense rates, the club is offering such manifold advantages educationally, soci'ally, culturally and scenically that each tourist will feel that he has made thq he.st investment in his life. Anton Grdina1 Sr., tHi: president of' the club, who has made (frequent'visits to Jugoslavia, and who has. reaped there a friendly spirit for the ^.merican Jugoslavs, stresses the fact that the ideal way in which to travel abroad is as an organized unit, under the direction of capable guides. That was one reason for the establishment of the Amerjcatt Jugoslav Tourists Club, which has its nucleus in Cleveland and whose interests are spread throughout the United States. When the steamer Mauretania sails from New York harbor on June 22, its third class decks are expected to be crowded with American Jugoslav ČlUb tourists from California, Montana, Minnesota, Colorado, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. Correspondence from prospective tourists of these various states has already reached the club headquarters, located at the Miha-Ijevich Steamship Agency, 6205 St. Clair Ave., Cleveland, O. All necessary and detailed information regarding the tour will be gladly furnished by making your inquiries at the stated lid-dress. The tour committee, which is composed of prospective and former tourists, newspaper representatives, educational, social and civic workers, and delegates of the Cunard Line, will meet next week to arrange a definite, program for the tour. A prolonged stop-over in France, Switzerland, Italy and the cruise along the Adriatic Sea, which is now held in the tentative plans, together with the extensive itinerary through Jugoslavia, will be discussed at length. -0—- ORELS PLAY SUNDAY An outstanding program of local popular Slovenian talent will be presented at the Willson Junior High School on Monday, March 14, under the auspices of the Community Welfare Club. I think I'll go in for ping-pong instead. At one time I was just about the most rugged ping-ponger in my "Y" class, I was. Won the class championship, I did, and would have won the tournament cup if the blasted ball hadn't bursted with a loud pop! and scared me silly. I've never been the same since then, but I think I'll stage a comeback anyhow. "Ex-Champ Coruscates in Brilliant Comeback Attempt',' and "Former Champion Regains Title." Vignette of life: A legless pencil seller and a blind street accordionist laughing and joking. Now, what about that hard-luck story you were going to tell? The home of Mrs. F. J. Milavec, 1001 E. 71st St., was the scene last Sunday of a noble experiment, when she and Mrs. Prince, assisted by their charming daughters, entertained .about a hundred people at a card social, the proceeds of which were turned over for the new St. Vitus' church fund. Bridge, pinochle, 66, bunco and dominoes were played at this benefit Social. The entire program was a decided success. Age vied with youth at cards. The admission was 50 cents, lunch and prizes included. Something like fifty dollars was turned over to the building fund. This idea inaugurates a new movement to help riysc funds for the church. It is hoped that it will attract many followers. SODALITY LECTURE Talks by Individual Members of St. Mary's Sodality Attract Crowds The St. Mary's Sodality life is seasoned with pep and vitality of late because of the numerous interesting features which have been introduced. One of them is a series of lectures that are given by the sodalists periodically. Miss Genevieve Zulich presented an impressive discourse on "St. Catherine of Sienna" last week, and the talk met with such approval that two additional lectures are announced for the future. "St. Theresa of Azilla" will be Miss Molly Trcek's topic and Miss Josephine Bernot will talk on the "Medici Family." --o-- PLAN NEW SOCIAL Sodality and Holy Name Members Unite in Producing "The Bride" The dramatic fame which' the Juhitfr Holy Name Society and the Young Ladies' Sodality of St. Mary's Church have reaped for themselves when they produced "Ann's Little Affair" last year will be re-established, it is believed, when "The Bride" will be presented by the joint organizations on Sunnday, May 15, at the Slovenian Home, Holmes Ave. Suspense, mystery, comedy and a well-developed plot all characterize the play, in which a bride figures without a bridegroom in the midst of a multitude of mystical and amusing entanglements. Father George Matun is directing the play, and he also says that a dance social is to follow the performance. -0- SHOW KING OF KINGS than the usual grain of salt. , At 'any rate, one informant would ta|c us believe that a member of the sex announced something to n.at effect on one of her radio cas'.t, •j."11 is now off the air as a result. Two shows will be given, a matinee for children and an evening performance for adults. Proceeds willl go toward the church fund. The parishioners arc urged to attend. -0- KKK SPRING FROLIC The lowest type of vermin, in my estimation, are people who degrade and slander others when they arc not there to defend themselves. And lower stili are men who tell tales about women, regardless if true or false. Recently I saw one of these odious oops taught the only kind of lesson they can learn. Three girls passed a group of street corner loungers. As soon as they were out of earshot one pf the loud-mouthed idlers began telling the rest of the crowd what he knew about one of them. Which was plenty—to hear him tell a. He kept this up for a minute or two, dragging the girl's character deeper and deeper into the mire. Presently a young man detached himself from another group standing near by. "You see that girl you've been talking about," he said to the teller of tall tales, "well, she's my sister." With that he let drive. They brought him to about five minutes later. He hasn't told any stories recently—his jaw's been too sore. With apologies to my neighbor across the page, do you remember: Theda Bara? Wally Reid? The last of the horse-drawn fire trucks? Sugarless coffee? With tons of sugar rotting in warehouses. The thrill of the first roller-coaster ride? The first'day of school and the first time you blitzed"? War tax? The contempt you felt for.the innocents who still believed in Santa Claus? The expression, "I hate smart kids"? The first honest-to-gosh "going out" date? When Elizabeth was just plain "Lizzie" and not Lisbeth? When "pansy" was a flower and not an adjetive? Gas lights? Arc lights? Spelling bees? Teaching the neighbor girls to ride a bike? When the world was as big as your imagination and nothing was impossible? The last card party sponsored by the Young Ladies' Sodality of St. Mary's Church was so succcssful and the patrons so pleased that another social of the sort will be attempted on Wednesday, March 16, in the church hall. Admission will be 25 cents and it will include prizes, entertainment and an appetizing four-course lunch. The Newburg and Euclid friends are invited to join the sodality in another pleasant evening. —-0- NEW PLAYWRIGHT Arcadian Melody Pilots to Play for Social Saturday, April 23 If you are in need of a spring tonic, than the K. K. K. Spring Frolic will serve the purpose. The delightful dance festival will be given at the Slovenian Workingmen's Home Saturday, April 23, with the Arcadian Melody Pilots supplying the music. In addition, the committee is also making preparations for an entertainment feature, and the refreshments are going to be quite delectable. Announcement is made, too, that the dancing will continue beyond the regulation midnight closing hour. Admission will be 50 cents. -0- BIRTHDAY PARTY When the deadline approaches and there yet remains some space to fill, 1 bog down in a smothering sense of futility and feel that for two safety pins and an old bottle cap I could give up the literary ghost. Just like that. I can offer myself more excuses than a conventioning Rotarlan who doesn't want to go home. But just the same, I'll sit here staring blankly while my mind trys to conjure up word pictures of nothing, smoking cigarets and drawing figure eights. And I'm not such a bad drawer of figure eights, if anybody should drive up in a Mack truck and ask you. First I'll draw one over the other— superimposing, isn't it?—then 1 start on one side of the sheet and go aeroiš, finally I'll end up with that fancy one I discovered w.hile rummaging through buried Inča treasures these twenty years ago, come Eastertide. I must tell you about that sometime, too. Them were the days, boys and girls, what were days. None of your namby pamby winters and wisht-I-may-dic-summcrs 'in those days. A man was still a man and women weren't gold-diggers. They were more refined, those ladies, they had the good taste to use a gun. If you would be socially correct, it is advised that you acquaint yourself with all the peculiarities of contract bridge—the pastime gaining such great popularity. One writer cleverly lelers to the auction player as the modem "Vanishing American." And so back to work. This will be the first dance of the new social season in Euclid, and as such will be one of the best produced by the sodality group. Admission will be 35 cents. Tickets may be procured from the members now. /Yoy'/zyC^ Champions TALK about your champs. The Slovenian sport addicts are proudly pointing at four titleholders that have sprung up in local sport circles during the past week. First came Mildred Debpvec, who a week ago last night copped the 19,11-32 Interfrat foul shooting crown by plunking iri 14 shots out of a possible 20 to set up a new mark for the annual tournament. Mildred is at present playing with the two-time loop champions, the Sokols, this being her second season with the Gymnasts. Last Tuesday night Joe Brule kayoed Mike Tucker in the third canto to win the 126-pound .open division champion- „ ....- ship of the fifth annual Golden Gloves tournamenl under the auspices of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Eddie Novinc deci-sioned Nick Boros for the heavy-weight novice title, while Louis Champa was drubbing Walter Bowe for the middleweight honors. All told, the Slovenians captured three out of a possible sixteen titles, which is some stepping! Previous to this the only Slovenian to come through in the Golden Mitten slamboree was Billy Skully, when he won the middleweight gonfalon in 1930. More About Our Champions OF the three titlists only Brule remains in the running for the national title and a chance for the Olympics, as the novice entries are not eligible. Joe's battle was one of the best on the program and ringside spectators, enthused over his good showing, predicted a bright future for the "Redhead," as he also looked good, and we believe he could have stepped another three rounds after he was through with Tucker. On the other hand, Eddie Simms' protege, Novinc, is far from a polished and groomed performer. One thing we were convinced about the other evening is that Novinc possesses an overabundance of intestinal fortitude—in other words, "guts." He stood with his opponent toe to toe, giving plenty as well as absorbing punishment. Eddie's chief fault was his gauging of distance. He would throw his punches while too far from his opponent, thtis giving him a chance to evade some of them that would probably cause much damage. Of course, one must realize that Eddie had only three fights before entering the tournament and therefore his awkwardness can be attributed to lack of experience. The same applies to Louis Champa. With a little more gym work and some more fights he will also round out into good shape. Congratulations are in order for the new champions, therefore the American Home Junior steps forward to extend its well-wishes to Eddie Novinc, Joe Brule, Louis Champa and Mildred De-bevec, our foul queen. Former Grdina Star Weds Hank Shainbock, local well-known amateur baseballer, joined the benedic-tine class last month. Hank saw service with the world's amateur championship club last year, namely the Cleveland Fisher Foods, who went through the entire tournament without a single defeat and winning nine games. Six years ago he cavorted in center BRULE, NOVINC, CHAMPA ARE CHAMPS George Washington* Slice Lead to One Game in Interlodge'A' TREE CHOPPERS IN DOUBLE WIN OVER GYMNASTS Betsy Ross Flag-makers Upset League Leading Spartans by Capturing Two Contests OBERSTAR WINS PRIZE LOCAL KEGLERS DROP PAIR OF GAMES IN EUCLID-13TH LEAGUE Kay Jays, Clairwoods and Pioneers Win Over Young Men, Comrades and Boosters Slowly but surely the George Wash-ingtons are closing up the gap between the leading Spartans and themselves, until now only one game separates the two aggregations and with six more kegling weeks left. The Tree Choppers gained a full game on their arch rivals when they set back the Sokols twice last Sunday and in the meantime the Spartans were permitting two games slip through their fingers in the Betsy Ross encounter. Outside of the big 2867 granfi total set up by the defending champions, the loop's keglers again performed poorly. "Ox" Kramer produced the only 600 total of the day as he collected 213, 194 and 214 maples for an aggregate total of 621. His two teammates, "Pugs" Opalek and "Lindy" Kotnik, missed the coveted class by three and six pins, respectively. For the losers Joe Kogoy was outstanding. Oberstar Wins Prize The Spartans continued to show weakly and as a result were bested by the Rossmen, who were little better than the circuit pacers in two of the three tilts. The highest score the Spartans could attain was a meager 857. Incidentally this was better than the Flagmakers' 813 and thus saved the Spartans from a whitewash. Oberstar garnered a 232 in his 579 series, which won for him the weekly suit cleaning prize. Skufca and Hostnik were other luminaries in this fracas. After the S. Y. M. C. captured the first game from the K. S. K. J., they went to pieces and dropped the next two by wide margins. Tony Grdina's 232 featured the battle and Joey Pro-sek tallied the only 200 mark for the Young Men. Harry Lausche came, in for a share of glory with his 527. The last place Clairwoods dumped the second last place Comrades twice in another poor contest. The S. D. Z; quint won the series by virtue of their six-pin margin in the middle skirmish, which terminated 739 to 733 tor the Comrades. Individual honors went tq Smole and Bokar. In a close match the Pioneers nosed out the Collinwood Boosters to add a brace of wins to their averages. F< Braidic and Yakos sparkled in this setto. for the Grdina club in B. Detroit scouts signed him for the coming campaign, and it is expected that he will play out of town this summer. THE SLOVENIAN BARBERSHOP OF GOOD SERVICE F. A. CREDENCE 6124 ST. CLAIR AVE. After an extended win streak in the Euclid-13th A League, the A. Grdina & Sons quint stock has taken a slight drop due to a slump in their usually fine performances. Last week the local five dropped two tilts to the Vernor Ginger Ales. Barth Alich rapped out 180, 216 and 245 games for a sizzling 641 to pace the Grdinas. Scheetz, with 602, starred for the Ginger Ales. Other outstanding individual efforts were: Joe Pozelnik's 204 and 201, Leskovec's 215, Haines' 203, Jisa's 226 and Perz's 225. Tonight the Grdinas tackle the F. R. Williams Surveyors at the downtown drives. BLEPP STAR KAY JAYS TO MAKE LAST TRY FOR GONFALON EDDIE SIMMS BOOKED WITH FRAN K IE WINE IN EQUESTRIUM TILT Frankie Wine, Barberton's contribution to heavyweight fight circles, stacks up as the most probable opponent for Eddie Simms, hard hitting neighborhood heavy, on Walter Taylor's next boxing card on March 18. Taylor, Equestrium fight impressario, has been traversing the eastern coast for opponents to match against the local lad. Wine, a veteran, has fought some of the country's best battlers. Recently he went four rounds with Jack Demp-sey, former world's heavy champ, but dropped the decision to the Manassa Mauler. JUNIORS TRIM CLASS B LOOP PACERS TWICE DEMSHARS WIN 6 GAMES IN LOCAL NORWOOD LOOP Three Out of Six Contests Terminate in Whitewash Victories This Weew The K. S. K. J. outfit has an outside chance of copping the Interlodge A bowling crown. Their final opportunity to make good will come Sunday, when they meet the first-place Spartans, whom they trail by a half-dozen games. Three wins by the Kay Jays will place them in a position to gain the top rung, anything short of that will practically eliminate them from the race, with the Spartans and George Washingtons fighting it out. The defending champions will coast in their mixup with the Pioneers on 7 and 8 and only a decided upset can change the prognostications. Complete schedule: Alleys 1 and 2: Betsy Ross vs. Clairwoods. Alleys 3 and 4: K. S. K. J. vs. Spartans. Alleys 5 and 6: Boosters vs. S. Y. M. C. Alleys 7 and 8: George Washingtons vs. Pioneers. Alleys 9 and 10: Sokols vs. Comrades. All games start at 2:30 p. m. SOKOLS, FLASHES TO STAGE FINALE Looking over ne^f ^ygjjj^gday's Interfrat cage bill one finds the two traditional rivals of the girls' basketball league, the Sokols. and Flashes, clashing, again for the'final time this season. Their rivalry, which' has provided many a thrill for the fans, dates back to the opening of the circuit. In previous contests the Gymnasts have proven their superiority, if even by a small margin. But the K. S. K. J. tossers, who are considered an off and on outfit, will consider their season highly successful if they can subdue the Red and White. The Pioneers, Loyalites, Spartans and Comrades are all grouped up near the top. Tonight two of these favorites are due to take a spill. The Pioneers, dark horse of the league, take on the fast stepping Loyalites at 8:15 and the league leading Spartans collide with the Comrades in the headliner. Trying to pick the winner, is like venturing a guess as to your mother-in-law's age. Complete schedule: Clairwoods vs.. George Washingtons, 6:45. Progressives vs. Betsy Ross, 7:30. Pioneers vs. Loyalites, 8:15. Spartans vs. Comrades, 9. Led by Joe Ferlin's 538, the Holy Name Juniors upset the league leading Svetek Strugglers and eked out a two-game verdict over the champs-to-be. Despite this reverse the Strugglers are in first place by a margin of four games, which is sufficient to assure them of the Class B title. With each team having a win apiece, they entered the last game full of frenzy. After the final ball was rolled on the slides and the figures were tabulated the Juniors were in front by a 839 to 830 count. Lead-off man Su-govec and anchorman Jelercic stood out best for the victims. Clairwoods Ahead The second place Clairwoods treated the other half of the Strugglers outfit, the Merchants, rather roughly as they gained a three-game win over them. Budan and A. Zupančič scintillated well for the S. D. Z. lads. Some good bowling by the Betsy Ross club enabled them to capture a pair of games from the Spartans. Perdan, Riddle and G. Kovitch were the leaders of the attack, while Kickol was hopelessly striving to keep the Spartans on top. Rovers-Utopians won two from the George Washingtons in the remaining melee. For the winners Tekavec was the outstanding pinster. -~-0-T- STRUGGLERS OUT TO CLINCH TITLE B u k o v n i k Studios Achieve Weekly High Total by Virtue of Their Big 2962 Six tilts were rolled in the Norwood Home League and three of them terminated in whitewash wins. The Demshars hung up their sixth win of the week by thrice trimming the Superior Home Supplies. Slogar and F. Opalek did well for the winners. For the Home Supplies Birchie Kromar was best. Barth Alich whittled the sticks for a 590 series as the Zakrajsek Undertakers twice subdued the Klauser Dentists. Kogoj and C. Lausche paced the Dentists. The Undertakers downed 2693 pegs ancj, the losers collected 2659. Although they rapped out a larger pin total, the Bukovnik Studios were clipped twice by the Norwood Recreations. J. Milavec and H. He ib confined to Ills bed at the time. All sport fans wish him a speedy recovery. With but nine more games remaining on the Interlodge B schedule, the Svetek Strugglers are perched on the upper tier with a four-game margin and only a tornado will dislodge them from this position. Sunday they engage the Betsy Ross Flagmakers on Allelys 15 and 16. The second-place Clairwoods, the only team having a chance to overhaul the Strugglers, and that a mathematical chance, are booked with the Rover-Utopians. They will be forced to go at top speed if they expect to catch up with the Strugglers and a defeat at this stage would give the Strugglers the 1931-32 consolation gonfalon. V QtLLV B(JRHI$ -O- Novinc and Champa Perform Creditably to Win Novice Division Championship By BILLY TOFANT Just by way of providing proof for our contention that youths of Slovenian extraction are slowly but surely advancing to the fore in the fight game, hree Slovenian ring warriors were acclaimed 1932 Golden Gloves champions by virtue of their s h o w i n g s in the fourth annual Golden Gloves tourney staged by the Pee Dee at the Public Hall on March 1, 2, 7 and 8. Two other Slovenian lads battled their way to the semifinals before being eliminated. In.the finals last Tuesday night the best showing, undoubtedly, was made by Joe "Red" Brule, sorrel-thatched Collinwood Slovenian. At least the customers thought so, and they're the supreme judges when it comes to giving either credit or the "Bronx cheer." "Red's" steady, hard two-fisted attack was one of the highlights of the tourney. Tuesday night Joey annexed the featherweight crown in the open division by kayoing Mike Tucker of the Argonne A. C. i'1 the third round. After dropping Tucker for a count of nine in the first frame, "Red" became a veritable whirlwind, throwing a multitude of lefts, rights, crosses and jabs at Tucker, but still game Mike hung on, blood pouring profusely from his nose and mouth. When the final gong ended the slaughter, the Argonne A. C. fighter lay draped against the ropes, unconscious to the goings on around him He had to be carried tcf the 'dressing room. You should have seen the smile on Red's freckled face when he was being presented with the robe, gloves,'tights and medals. He deserved them! Champa Decisions Bowe One of the standout battlers in the novice division was Louis Champa, South Side Slovenian. Louis, who hails from the Manny Robbins A. C., copped the middleweight honors in the novice division by larruping Walter Bowe of the Downs A. C. Both boys stood toe to toe and slugged it out. SILVER MASKS AND SOKOLS TO MEET IN INTERFRAT SERIES ' OiiifUvu "By drubbing the Comrades last night, the Sokols assured thernselveš of a post in the league's play-off series with the first-place Silver Masks aggregation. This makes it the third consecutive time the Gymnasts are represented in the post-season battles. They emerged from the previous two engagements with the Interfrat title, and they may surprise the circuit followers in the coming series and upset the favorite Mask quintet. In last night's battle, Slaper functioned smoothly for the victors and „, , , . , —. . . . . tallied eight markers. Snider paced gbampa s dynamic rights and lefts had the losers, getting five of her team's six points. The final count, was Sokols 21, Comrades 6. Masks, Flashes in Wins The Silver Masks added another win to their string by trouncing the Progressives, 22 to 12. Jannsen and O'Siecky starred with seven points apiece for the winners, while Zelle tallied five for the victims. When the George Washingtons failed to put in their appearance, the Flashes won by 2 to 0 score, as the Tree Choppers forfeited the game. There will be one more game played in the regular schedule, with the series between the Silver Masks and Vic Za-Ietel's Sokols following immediately after this. Two games will probably be played in one week, with the third, if necessary, played the following week. --o- BUKOVNIKS WIN Bowe down on the canvas twice, but he managed to last the route Good boy* Lou! Billy was felled no less than five times by long Tony Artner. -o-— Some folks look on the stage of life through the wrong end of the opera glasses. ......... Shades of Eddie Simms! One look at Eddie Novinc in action and you'd be willing to wager that it was Simms doing the mauling. The same style, and same footwork. How come? Well, for the past three months Simms has spent many long and tedious hours with Novinc in the Kelly A. C. gymnasium in teaching him the tricks of the trade and grooming him to cop the heavyweight tiara in the novice class. Novinc, another Slovenian boy from out Collinwood way, did just that. Since he has been associated with Simms he has nurtured fond dreams of emulating the feats that the younger Simms performed when he was an amateur. With that thought foremost in mind, he stepped out Tuesday night and all but knocked out Nipk Boros to win the novice heavy honors. Novinc absorbed plenty of punishment in the opening round. He came back strqng in the second and had Boros ready for a trip to the resin, but couldn't connect. When' Nick elccted to slug it out in. the last round, Eddie stayed right with him and the two were ■ whooping it up right merrily at the bell. Besides the other awards, Eddie was presented with the Justen trophy by Jack Dempsey, who had refereed the match. Burns and Mordus Lose in Semi-Finals One of the upsets of the tourney was the defeat of Billy Burns, neighborhood welter, by Tommy Lowry in the semifinals Monday night. Burns, who had his optics trained on the Olympics, made his mistake in directing his offensive attack on his opponent's body-While he was thusly engaged, Lowry was busy marking up a margin of points that Billy, even by a last round spurt, couldn't overcome. However, i' was a close battle. Tough luck, Billy! Because he couldn't continue with the pace he set in the first two rounds, Johnny "Sheebatz" Mordus, corner idol, dropped the decision to tough Mike Tucker in an open featherweight duel. Johnny's stinging jabs had Tucker down for counts twice, but "Sheebatz" couldn't summon enough energy together to finish him. Tucker's great rally in the final canto cinched the decision for him.
