(Foto: James Debevec) REAGAN ZAGOVARJA "NOV FEDERALIZEM" IN SVOJO GOSPODARSKO POLITIKO Iz Clevelanda in okolice Zadnje vesti • Washington, D.C. — Nika-ragveška vlada je trdila, da pripravljajo ZDA zaroto, katere namen je strmoglaviti sandinistični režim. Tako kot so delale ZDA v Čileju leta 1973, ko je bil strmoglavljen režim Salvadorja Allendeja, tako delajo proti Nikaragvi, je dejal vplivni član sandi-nistiene vlade, Jaime Whee-lock. • Varšava, Polj. — Poljski režim je dal vedeti, da bodo mogli tisti oporečniki, priprti od proglasitve vojnega stanja 13. decembra lani ali pa aretirani kasneje, zaprositi za izstopne vizume, ako se bodo prostovoljno izselili iz države. • Santa Monica, Kal. — Predsednik Reagan je imenoval 59-letnega generala Johna W. Vesseyja za novega načelnika generalštaba ameriških vojaških sil. Dosedanji načelnik, gen. David Jones, se bo upokojil. • Tripoli, Lib. — Libijski »samodržec Moammar Kadafi jo dejal v govoru na zasedanju libijskega parlamenta, da bo najbrž prišlo do vojne nred Libjo in ZDA. Vojna se ko začela takoj, če bodo ameriške ladje in letala zopet Prišla v zaliv Sidra, ob libijski obali. V tem zalivu je lani prišlo do incidenta, ko so ameriška bojna letala sestrelila dva libijska lovca. • Washington, D.C. — Zvezni senat razpravlja o možni izključitvi sen. Harrisona D. W i 11 i a msa, obsojenega na zveznem sodišču zaradi sodelovanja v podkupninski aferi Abscam. Včeraj je Williams prosil svoje kolege, naj ga ne izključijo iz zveznega senata. Po ameriški ustavi ima zvezni senat pravico izključiti člana, četudi je bil le-ta pravilno izvoljen na volitvah. Alfred Zeitz V ponedeljek, 1. marca, je v St. John’s bolnišnici po kratki bolezni umrl 78 let stari Alfred Zeitz s 440 E. 152 St., rojen v Clevelandu, vdovec po leta 1980 umrli ženi Evelyn, roj. Hoste, oče Therese Burns, Evelyn Murray in Thomasa, 10-krat stari oče, 1-krat prastari oče, brat Leonarda, Georgea, Josepha, Mary Brickman, Agnes Zeitz ter pok. Normana in Petra, zaposlen pri Norfolk & Western železnici 50 let, do svoje upokojitve leta 1973. Pogreb bo iz Želetovega pogrebnega zavoda na E. 152 St. danes, v petek, ob 9.15 'dopoldne, v IV. Ta postopek je bil le kaplja vala političnih procesov, ki se je 1981 zgrnil nad Jugoslavijo. Politi čnih kazenskih sodb tudi prejšnja leta ni manjkalo. A lani je bila med obsojenimi vrsta duhovnikov. Eden od njih, frančiškan Jožo Zovko iz Medjugorja v Hercegovini, mora najbrž delati pokoro za nekaj, česar ni on naredil in kar gre partijskemu vodstvu nemalo na živce. Odkar se je 24. junija v Medjugorju šestim otrokom prikazala Marija, se je tja zgrinjalo vedno več vernikov, sprva le iz bližnje okolice, kasneje tudi iz Bosne in končno celo iz Hrvaške; doslej naj bi jih prišlo daleč čez »to tisoč. Grič Črnica, na u .. .. . *• , 9 Weinberger: Savjeli imajo nov bombnik; ZDA potrebujejo B-1 WASHINGTON, D.C. — O-brambni tajnik Caspar W. Weinberger je dejal, da je Sovjetska zveza začela z' izdelovanjem novega bombnika. Ta bombnik je sposoben doseči cilje v ZDA, je rekel Weinberger, in bo povzročil nove težave za ameriške obrambne sile. Bombnik je v mnogočem podoben novemu Ameriškemu bombniku serije B-l, ki ga pa še ne izdelujemo, je nadaljeval obrambni tajnik ZDA. Predse dnik Ronald Reagan je v svojem proračunskem načrtu za fiskalno leto 1983 namenil precej denarja za B-l, a so mnogi kongresniki proti, češ, da bo B-l zastarelo letalo že takrat, ko ga bodo serijsko izdelovali. Weinberger in predstavniki Pentagona zatrjujejo, da to-nikakor ni res. Poudarjajo, da so ZDA v tej stroki vojskovanja odvisne od bombnikov serije B-52, nekatera teh letal pa so že stara 30 let in več. cerkev sv. Jeroma ob 10., nato na pokopališče sv. Križa. katerem so videli otroci, kot zatrjujejo sami, božjo Mater, je postal čez noč romarski kraj. Govori se o jugoslovanskem Lurdu. Cerkev je najprej zadržano čakala, vendar je medjugor-ski župnik Zovko za zgrinjajoče se vernike maševal in jih spovedoval. Pri tem je ravnal v soglasju z mostarskim škofom Zaničem, ki je 16. avgusta v hrvaškem cerkvenem časopisu Glas Koncile previdno sporočil začasni izid svojih raziskav: Nihče od Cerkve ni na otroke vplival, da bi govorili neresnico, in “doslej” tudi vse kaže, da so govorili resnico. Vendar o-staja vprašanje, ali gre za njihovo osebno doživetje ali pa za nadnaravno prikazova- LOS ANGELES, Kalif. — Ta teden je predsednik Ronald Reagan obiskal razne zvezne države na ameriškem zahodu in v svojih govorih vneto branil svojo sporno gospodarsko politiko in “novi federalizem”. Slednji izraz rabi Reagan za program, po katerem naj bi posamezne zvezne države ter okrajne in mestne uprave prevzele vse dolžnosti v zvezi z upravljanjem več programov, ki sedaj spadajo v pristojnost zvezne uprave. Predsednik je poudarjal v vsakem govoru svoje globoko prepričanje, da ga podpira v teh prizadevanjih velika večina ‘navadnih’ Ameriikan-cev. Zelo ostro je zmerjal tiste, ki nasprotujejo njegovemu programu oz. politiki. Vsaj javno ne dopušča Reagan veliko prostora tistim republikancem in konservativnim demokratom v zveznem kongresu, ki želijo doseči kompromisno rešitev o predsednikovem programu, katera bi bila sprejemljiva kongresu. Skupina vodilnih republikanskih senatorjev, ki ji.: vodi sen. Howard H. Baker (R.-Tenn.), je izjavila, da bo kljub Reaganovim besedam nadaljevala s prizadevanji. Ti republikanci predlagajo določeno povišanje zveznih davkov in znižanje od Reagana predlaganih izdatkov za obrambne namene ZDA. Predsednik, ki vedno trdi, da se je pripravljen pogajati o možnih manjših spremembah svojega proračunskega načrta, je pa ponovno izjavil, da ne bo pristal na povišanje davkov ali znižanje izdatkov za obrambo ZDA. Izidi najnovejših javnih povpraševanj nasprotujejo Reaganovi trditvi, da je njegov ekonomski program podprt od povprečnega Amerikanca. Anketa, ki jo je vodil Harris Survey kaže, da je 56 odstotkov Amerikancev negativno razpoloženih do Reagana, podpira ga pa 44 odstotkov. Aprila lani je Reagana podprlo 67 odstotkov vseh A-merikancev. Najslabši odmev med Ame-rikanci je bil predsednikov nje, odprto. Manj se je krotila oblast. Funkcionarji so obtožili Cerkev, da je vse to uprizorila ona iz klerikalno-nacionali-stičnih nagibov in da zlorablja verska čustva za boj proti socialistični ureditvi. Ko se je ta gonja stopnjevala, se je škof Zanič v pismu pritožil pri predsedniku jugoslovanskega državnega predsedni-štva, pri čemer se je skliceval na “temeljne državljanske in človekove pravice”, ki so kršene. Državna oblast ni ostala pri besedah. Policija je prevohala samostan v bližini Medjugorja in pri tem redovnice telesno preiskala. Policija je pretipala tudi medjugor-sko župnišče in zaplenila ves denar, ki ji je prišel pod roke. Župnika Zovka so poslali predlog, naj bodo znižani izdatki zvezne vlade za programe Medicare in Medicaid. Takšno znižanje bi prizadelo predvsem upokojence. Proti je kar 74'< Amerikancev. Z večino 69:28 so Ameri-kanci kritični do Reagana zaradi njegove po njihovem mnenju neučinkovite politike v zvezi s sedanjim gospodarskim zastojem. 0PEC države v skrbeh radi nižje cene nafte in manjšega izvoza LONDON, V. Br. — V zadnjih tednih so OPEČ države zelo zaskrbljene, ker je vse več nafte na razpolago na mednarodnem tržišču. Ker je ponudba večja od povpraševanja, so nekatere OPEČ države znatno pocenile ceno soda svoje nafte. Zaradi tega je postala nafta cenejša v razvitih zahodnih državah, predvsem pa v ZDA, kjer nekateri poznavalci naftne industrije celo že napovedujejo, da bo mogoče julija letos dobiti galon bencina za manj kot dolar. Mnenje gospodarstvenikov je, da je sedanje stanje v zvezi z nafto mogoče pripisati dvema poglavitnima vzrokoma: Prvi se nanaša v vse učinkovitejšem varčevanju z energijo v državah, uvoznikih nafte, drugi pa je povezan s splošnim gospodarskim zastojem tako v ZDA kot Zahodni Evropi. V ZDA je galon bencina cenejši v primerjavi z istim obdobjem lani za 9 centov in bo morda veliko cenejši v prihodnjih mesecih. ----—o------ VREME Spremenljivo oblačno in vetrovno danes z naj višjo temperaturo okoli 29 F. Po poročilu Neue Zuercher Zeitung so nekega mladega delavca, ki je bil dotlej brezveren, pa se je na romanju v Medju-gorje spreobrnil h katoliški veri, poslali v umobolnico in ga tam “zdravili” z drogami, dokler ni bil voljan preklicati svoje vere. Omenil sem slovenske misijonarje v ZDA; ti so nam, zgled, kako ohranjati in gojiti slovenske tradicije. Tega ne vršimo samo zaradi zvestobe slovenskemu narodu; to je sicer potrebno, a ni samo sebi namen. Razlog je globlji: človek mora gojiti v sebi, kar je tesno povezano, ta-korekoč vraščeno v njegovo naravo. To pa ni nekaj abstraktnega ali nejasnega. Vse, kar vodi do napredka, je pod vplivom razvoja. Razvoj pa pomeni nastajanje iz nečesa, kar obstoja in je nastajalo v preteklosti. V življenju naroda, družine, vsake skupnosti in p o s a m e znega človeka samega imenujemo to z besedo tradicija ali izročilo: izročanje od osebe do osebe, iz roda v rod. Vsaka družina ima svojo tradicijo. Tudi narod ima svojo tradicijo. Vsakdo izmed nas doživlja svojo osebno tradicijo na različne načine; in to niso samo spomini, je tudi nekaj, kar nosimo s seboj v sebi in ne more popolnoma odmreti, četudi človek zanemarja sebe in dobro, ki je v njem. Imamo torej razloge, da govorimo o slovenski tradiciji in sicer o slovenski tradiciji v Ameriki; kratko: slovensko ameriška tradicija; ker vsebuje duhovne vrednote,, lahko govorimo tudi o slovensko ameriški duhovni zakladnici. Ni dovolj, da gojimo slovensko tradicijo, ki smo jo prinesli s seboj iz rojstne domovine. Ako bi vršili samo to, se je za nas življenje ustavilo in smo na mrtvi točki. Kdor pozna hsnovne pojme v fiziki, ve, kaj je mrtva točka. Tradicijo je treba živeti. Le tako se ohranja. Z ohranjanjem jo bogatimo, ker ji dajemo življenje. V tradicijo vnašamo svoj oseben doprinos, svoje osebno razumevanje tega, kar smo prejeli od svojih staršev. V neki meri so starši za nas uresničenja vsega slovenskega izročila, čeprav sami niso vedeli vsega. kar je v tem izročilu. Po njih je bilo izročeno nam. In prav to je znamenje, da je v izročilu življenjska sila, ki jo je treba ohranjati in gojiti. Kar smo prejeli od staršev, nam daje ključ do vsega, kar _ je v slovenskem izročilu. Osebno razumevanje nas samih je pod mnogimi vplivi; eden izmed najmočnejših-; vplivov je vpliv okolja. In to okolje označimo na kratko: Amerika. Ne toliko, kar Amerika v celoti je ali bi vsaj., morala biti, marveč v kolikor jo poznamo in smo pripravljeni sprejeti od nje, kar se nam zdi potrebno in dobro. Tako je, ker nihče ne more živeti ali pridobiti za življenje potrebne stvari, ako živi v izolaciji ali sani zase. Ako. bi hoteli ohranjati slovensko tradicijo brez ozira na pogoje, ki nas obdajajo, ima tradicijo za nekaj mrtvega in jo tudi naredi mrtvo. V takem razpoloženju do tradicije sploh nima razumevanja za vrednote, ki jih tradicija vključuje. Še manj pa pride do spoznanja, da tradicijo, izročilo, ohranjamo in gojimo prav zaradi vrednot. Kaj razumemo pod tradicijo ali izročilom? Bojim se, da mlajšim generacijam to ne pomeni veliko. Spoznajo jo kot določen način življenja v domači družini. Na družino so navezani, a ne vedno v pravi meri, ker gre človek skozi razne stopnje na poti do osamosvojitve. To vezi z družino zrahlja in neredko skoraj pretrga, posebno tistim, ki niso nikoli uživali v družini topline doma. Seveda igrajo tu svojo vlogo mnoge stvari, vendar se v mnogih primerih v poznejših letih spomin na družino poživi. Niso redki, ki se začnejo zanimati za dom. svojih staršev, iščejo svoje sorodnike in želijo dobiti knjigo, iz katere bi se naučiii vsaj nekaj stavkov slovenščine, da se bodo lahko razgo-varjali s svojimi sorodniki, ki jih nameravajo obiskati. V teh vrsticah se ne spuščam v razmišljanje vzrokov, ki so uničili tradicijo v mnogih družinah. To je raziskovanje, ki so ga sposobni strokovnjaki na tem področju. ,0 tem so napisane mnoge knjige, ki navajajo tudi mnoge primere izseljencev v Ameriko. Tu nam gre predvsem za spoznanje, da slovensko ameriško izročilo ni zadeva, ki je brez pomena in do katere smo lahko brezbrižni. Tako namreč mislijo ljudje, ki z zagovarjanjem svoje samostojnosti ali neodvisnosti o-pravičujejo ali zagovarjajo u-pravičenost svojega preloma s Slovenci. Seveda tega ne moremo posplošiti in posebno ne narediti zaključka, da ljudje, ki ne pokažejo nobenega zunanjega znaka narodne' pripadnosti, nimajo sebe več za Slovence. Vidu se prav lepo zahvaljuje vsem, ki so mu pomagali k tako lepemu uspehu zad-njenedeljskega šolskega kosila. Začetek koncerta bo ob sedmih zvečer. Program je razdeljen v dva dela. V prvem delu programa bo celotni mešani zbor podal skladnico popularnih narodnih in klasičnih pesmi, s priljubljenimi popevkami, solistkami Betty Resnik, Angelo Žabjek in Florence Unetich, v solospevu in duetu. Sledil bo kratek odmor. Po odmoru bodo peli v skrajšani verziji in dialogu Robert Planquetteve operete “Chimes of Normandy” v običajnih kostumih, petju in govoru. Sušeč ali brezen sta stari slovenski narodni imeni za marec. Sušeč je pač suhi mesec, ko se zemlja posuši in jo je že mogoče obdelovati, toda če se sušea da orati, aprila ti bo jokati. — Ta mesec ima preprosto preveč obrazov, da bi mu človek lahko zaupat. Če v marcu sneži, je sneg moker, če dežuje, kaplje zmrzujejo. Februar je zima, april posameznike ali celo družino z lepim znanjem slovenščine ali pa poznanjem slovenske preteklosti. So še posamezne družine, v katerih tukaj rojeni otroci razumejo in govorijo slovensko, seveda ne brez napak. To je v krajih, kjer imajo slovenske fare, v katerih so ohranjali tudi slovensko kulturno življenje. Kjer pa je prevladovalo mnenje, da se v narodnih farah ohranja slovenščina samo za starejše, ki se niso dobro naučili angleščine, ni znakov pripadnosti slovenskemu narodu med mlajšimi generacijami. V nekaterih slovenskih farah so po prihodu novih naseljencev po 1. 1949 ustanovili slovenske šole, navadno znane kot sobotne šole. No- vi naseljenci so nadaljevali slovensko kulturno življenje. V večini je bila volja, da o-stanejo Slovenci. Isto so želeli za svoje otroke. Upoštevati moramo tudi slovenske naseljence v krajih, kjer ni bilo ne slovenskih far in, ne slovenskih društev. Tudi ti so na razne načine pokazali, da hočejo ostati Slovenci. Kako? Lahko govorimo samo o splošnih znakih, ki so opazni, druei oa šo zadeva razisko- vanja. Splošni znaki so: na-ročitev slovenskih časopisov in listov, v posameznih primerih učenje slovenščine doma, razgovor med člani družine v slovenskem jeziku .. . So družine, v katerih so se otroci doma naučili lepe slovenščine, čeprav niso obiskovali slovenske šole. Poznam, nekaj takih družin. Sedaj so otroci na univerzah ali pa so jih že končali; še vedno govorijo slovensko, posebno s svojimi starši. To so dosegli starši, ki so spremljali otroke skozi vso mladost. Tudi ko so bili otroci v High School in pozneje na univerzi, so šli starši z njimi, da so spoznali okolje, v katerem so bili otroci med šolskim letom. Taki starši so vsaj toliko spoznali okolje svojih otrok-študentov, da so lahko razumeli otroke, ko so jim govorili o svojih doživetjih v šoli ali na univerzi. Na nekaterih univerzah so se slovenski študentje med seboj poznali, se organizirali v klub, da so se lahko pripravili za prireditve etničnih skupin pod pokrovi- , teljstvom univerze Razmišljali bomo še o narodnem izročilu in o slovensko ameriškem izročilu. Sredi današnjega svetovnega nemira in moralnega kaosa, predvsem pa slabo vzgojenih staršev in otrok, pomeni danes v življenju tole: Odrasli, učitelji, duhovniki, posebno pa oče in mati, se preveč upogibajo in pokoravajo željam in zahtevam otrok, namesto, da bi ta mladina prejela napotke in ukaze svojih staršev in vzgojiteljev. In ker gre danes vse narobe, sem prepričan, da se ob lepi glasbi umiriš in odpočiješ. Politika, oblast in človeška družba so vedno v enem neskončnem boju, v boju za pravico, enakost in mir na zemlji. Ta borba je nekak vzgon k napredku, je večna borba, v kateri padajo največje žrtve. Toda v zgodovini umetnosti pa sijeta polnost, mir srca in duše. Umetnost, posebno glasba, je sen človeštva, sen o svetlobi, sen o svobodi in ljubezni. Te sanje se nikoli ne pretrgajo in nič se ni nam bati poti v prihodnjost. Nekateri trdijo, da o umetnosti je bilo . že vse povedano in napravljeno. Morda je bilo že res vse povedano, vendar je treba vse še povedati. Umetnost je neizčrpna, kot življenje. Morda boste uganili, iz katerih oper je tekst: Ulivaj življenje v pomladnem li cvetu, Letošnja zima, čeprav hu-1 da, je bila kar bogata po glas-S benem udejstvovanju, saj stal bila kar dva ansambla iz Slo-j venije na gostovanju v Cie-] velandu. V sredi decembra je 1 bil tukaj ansambel iz Brežic “Dobri prijatelji”, ki je bil na turneji po širni Kanadi. V Clevelandu je nastopil v znani Sterletovi restavraciji in privabil lepo število gostov in prijateljev polk in valčkov. Ansambel obstoja šele štiri leta in je takorekoč eden izmed novih zasedb iz Slovenije. Kljub temu da imajo precej svojih lastnih skladb in 1 aranžmajev narodnih melodij, izstopajo med izvajanjem vsekakor polke in valčki Slavka Avsenika, kateri vedno izvabijo navdušene aplavze pri: mnogih orkestrih, ki jih igrajo,. Tudi pri izvajanju modernih melodij je orkester pokazal zmožnost igranja v bolj modernem stilu in posebno nekaj pevskih skladb je navdušilo publiko, da je močno ploskala. Le tempo polk in valčkov je bil preveč hiter, tako, da je to malo motilo plesalce, ker tukajšnji orkestri ne igrajo v tako hitrem tempu ves večer. Orkestru “Dobri prijatelji” je sledil znani ansambel, katerega že preko 25 let vodi klarinetist komponist in a-ranžer Franček Povše, pod imenom “Veseli planšarji”. Ta ansambel je v sedanji zasedbi vsekakor eden izmed u-glajenih orkestrov v Sloveniji, saj so glasbeniki ansambla že dolgoletni mojstri na glasbenem polju. Klarinetist Darko Abram, 1 ki je zamenjal voditelja ansambla Frančka Povšeta, igia v ljubljanski Operi, harmoni- kaš Edi Seme j a je tudi ve^ ran, ki ima za seboj preko j let profesionalnega igrali j po vsej Evropi, prav tako * tarist Albin Drobne. Mlada ljubezen, kako si čudežna, vsega mogočna pot ukazuješ in kogar objameš, vsega do dna prevzameš. Ve ptice lastovice, kje dom dom je moj, razpnite perotnice in ponesite me tja s seboj. V gore domače spet se podajva, srečno življenje tam uživajva, strune prebiral boš, pesmi boš peval in v njih sladki sen zazibal spet. Kadar zvečer na ulici svetilke se prižgo, poj in ljubi neprestano, saj le enkrat ti je 16 let! Tiha noč, ljubezni noč, uteši hrepenenje! Ljubezni je ves svet pokoren, njen sad vsakomur je blagotvoren! Rad oziram se po tej in po oni, ki kot zvezde bliščijo okrog mene, a nobena srca mi ne gane, kjer za eno nikdar srce ne gori! Ko so zvezde prihajale in se je bližala noč, prišla je kot boginja in na' prša mi je padla. Razkošje sladko mi je bilo v poljubih, ko sem omamljen razgalil ji telesa divne čari. Zdaj umiram sam in v obupu. / * Zdravniki priporočajo nam, da čim bolje izkoristimo bližajočo se pomlad. Po dolgi in mrzli zimi so naposled prišli težko pričakovani sončni dnevi, ki jih je treba izkoristiti preudarno. V mislih moramo imeti osebno počutje in telesno kondicijo. V tej debati o podpiranju domačih bogoslovcev v misijonih je bil pozvan k besedi tudi g. France Gaber, ki je šele pred kratkim prišel iz Amerike (ZD) v Gorico. O-menil je, da tudi on s. pomočjo dobrih duš iz minnesotskih fara pomaga pri vzdrževanju 25 bogoslovcev. Seveda, da se to ne da primerjati z delom onih na Koroškem. Obljubil je, da bo s tem delom nadaljeval in skušal še druge pridobiti. , Sledilo je poročilo, ki ga je podal msgr. Humar iz Gorice za Beneško Slovenijo!. Omenil je, da tam niso nikdar imeli svoje samostojnosti. Pred prvo svetovno vojno je bilo iz Benečije precej misijonskih poklicev. Zelo lepo dela med njimi dr. Marjan Hvalica, zaposlen sicer v italijanskem svetu, pa veliko pomaga in svetuje beneškim Slovencem. Misijonarji, ki so izšli iz beneškega sveta, so: Ošnjak, ki je že med pokojnimi; Emil Chiuch in Ivan Obala v Tanzaniji in Mirko Trusgnach v Thailandu. Ko je prišel ta misijonar domov na oddih, je odkril molitvenik svoje matere, iz katerega ga je učila slovensko moliti. Nedavno so imeli beneški Slovenci v Rimu svoj nastop in so bili lepo sprejeti. Imajo tudi rojaka diplomata v Rimski kuriji. Avdijenco pri sv. očetu na trgu sv. Petra smo imeli v mislih, ko nas je v sredo zjutraj spravilo pokonci lepo sončno jutro. Poseben avtobus nas je popeljal na ogled raznih znamenitosti, kot so: uradi Kongregacije za širjenje vere. Tam smo v kapeli molili na prostoru, kjer sta nekdaj klečala in se Bogu darovala Knoble-har in Baraga ter številni drugi misijonarji, ki so ta zavod obiskali. Nadaljevali smo pot proti papeški misijonski univerzi Urbaniana, ki jo je ustanovil papež Urban 1. 1622 in je od takrat misijonska centrala za ves katoliški svet. Tu se rešujejo misijonski problemi, izbirajo kandidati za misijonske škofe in deli podpora vsem misijonom. Vodil nas je in nam razlagal vse to msgr. Jezernik, ki nam je tudi predstavil prefekta Kongregacije kardinala Rossija, ter rektorja "Urbaniane Fr. Jose Saraiva. V lepi akustični dvorani, avditoriju papeža Janeza Pavla II., smo mu zapeli nekaj slovenskih pesmi. Čas je hitel mimo nas v večnost in odpravili smo se peš na trg sv. Petra in k av~ dijenci. Imeli smo po zaslugi msgr. Jezernika rezerviran prostor. Med čakanjem je bila prilika, da smo si lahko o-gledali tudi skupine drugih narodnosti, ki so prihajale na določena mesta. Mnogi so prepevali nabožne pesmi v svojem jeziku. Proti 11. uri se je nad nami v zraku pojavil bel helikopter, ki je iz Castel Gandolfa prinašal sv. očeta. Ljudje so se razživeli in pričeli mahati v pozdrav. Nedolgo za tem pa se je iz portala pripeljal z malim avtom do določenega vhoda in izstopil. Ko je prihajal proti tribuni, se je pogovarjal in rokoval z ljudmi na eni strani. Sonce je prijetno žgalo na nas, pa kdo se je za to zmenil. Navzočnost našega sv. očeta je zakrila vse težave. Ob tolikem ljudstvu smo ob njem začutili univerzalnost Cerkve in našo veliko ljubezen in spoštovanje do papeža. V svojem nagovoru se je najprej zahvalil Bogu in zdravnikom, bolniškim sestram in vsem drugim, ki so molili za njegovo zdravje. Obsodil je zločinski atentat na Sadata v Egiptu, ki je bil izvršen prejšnji dan. Vsako skupino je pozdravil v njihovem jeziku, tako tudi našo. Navdušeno smo ploskali. In ko je dal svoj apostolski blagoslov nam vsem tam zbra-; nim, je ta dosegel tudi vse drage doma in v širnem svetu. Iz tribune se je vračal potem na strani, kjer smo bili zbrani Slovenci. Ko smo povedali, da smo Slovenci, je dejal, Slovenci, bratje Slovenci, živijo, živijo! Bilo je to posebno nepozabno doživetje, srečanje s sv. očetom. Polni lepih vtisov smo nadaljevali naše delo simpozija, popoldan. V predavanju prelata Janeza Bele-ja od Kongregacije za širjenje vere, smo slišali o sestavi katoliške Cerkve v Rimu, o nalogi Kongregacije za evan-gelizacijo narodov, o poslanstvu Misijonskih družb, vzgoji bogoslovcev, skrbi za mala in velika semenišča, ter o vlogi družine v misijonskem delovanju. Ta lepi dan se je zopet zaključil z oktobrsko pobožnostjo, po kateri je potem g. Lado Lenček kazal misijonske diapozotive njegovega o-biska med misijonarji na Madagaskarju. To je bilo za tiste, ki niso bili preveč utrujeni. Četrtek smo začeli z zgodnjo koncelebrirano sv. mašo. Po zajtrku je bilo na vrsti predavanje “O sodobni vzgoji misijonskih delavcev.” O tem nam je govoril rektor Slove-nika msgr. Maksimilijan Jezernik, iz svojih bogatih izkušenj v Tajništvu na papeški unverzi Urbaniani. Propaganda za širjenje vere je posegala in posega v formacijo misijonskih poklicev na dva načina: Na podlagi sv. pisma in zgodovinske izkušnje nakaže načela prave vzgoje in nato pomaga z lastnimi ustanovami voditeljem misijonskih družb in škofom pri odgovornem delu. Med drugim je bila zelo poudarjena važnost domače kulture, domačega jezika, gorečnost misijonarja ter ljubezen, ki je vez vse popolnosti. Naslednje predavanje je imel prof. Pavel Leskovec, DJ, direktor slovenske oddaje na Vatikanskem radiu in profesor na Vzhodnem papeškem institutu. Govoril je predvsem o misijonskih obveščevalnih sredstvih. -Vatikanski radio oddaja v 80 različnih jezikih. Vendar smo čuli, da prekomorske oddaje ne služijo dobro, ker so oddajniki pokvarjeni. Imajo željo, zgraditi novega, ki bi tako oddajal bolj popolno. A Friend Cleveland, Ohio Next weekend, March 5, 6 and 7. the National K.S.K.J. Basketball Tournament will be held in Cleveland. Games on Saturday will begin at around 9 a.m. and on Sunday at 10 a.m. Admission to the games will be 50<- or $2 for a weekend pass. There will be 18 teams coming from out-of-state (India- na, Illinois, and Wisconsin). On Saturday evening, a dance featuring the Don Slo-' gar Orchestra will be held at St. Vitus Auditorium starting at 8:30 p.m. Admission is $2. Hočevar Ohio Federation Athletic Director -------o------ By JIM DEBEVEC One of the most exciting events of the last few years occured on Saturday evening, Feb. 20 at the Masquerade dance held at the Slovenian Home on Holmes Avenue. The event was sponsored by dramatic group Lilija. In charge of the festivities was Ed Mejac, former head of the Alpine Sextet band. He said the Masquerade was a Slovenian tradition held before Lent, “Like a Mardi gras or ‘pust’ in Slovenian. Lilija . has been doing it for over 20 years.” The hall was decorated with helium-filled balloons held in perfect arches thru-out the auditorium. The Kres dancers were in charge of decorations and did such a magnificent job, a picture of the place will be kept as a permanent part of the records of the Home. During the course of the evening, persons entering the hall in costume were announced accorting to their disguise and spotlighted. They then mingled with the crowd until the unmasking at 11 p.m. t'here were dozens of get-ups, each hand made. The first-place winner, Stan Krulc Was disguised as a man and Woman dancing. In order to create the perfect effect, he spent the evening walking on his hands and feet. Second place was earned by Mark Zakrajšek who, be- 1 lieve it or not, was an old man carried by an old woman. Dorothy Tome gave the effect of being Richard Nixon riding piggy-back on a woman. Also in attendance were Pac-Man, The Wolf Man with Radio, Beach Bums, and an assortment of other characters. Being there was one of the most delightful experiences of my life. The Duke Marsic band, Happy Slovenians, provided the superb music. During band intermissions, captivating magician Mike Kosir, with assistant Joe Gaser, entertained all with amazing feats of prestigita-tion. The skillful work and soaring imagination that went into making the costumes leaves one with a feeling of pride in being Slovenian, and warmth in knowing that we indeed have some of the best and imaginative minds on earth geared to carrying out the most intelligent endeavors to successful conclusions. By JIM DEBEVEC The Swiss Haus restaurant on Route 307 (2 miles from the 1-90 Madison exit) will be serving meals Sunday, March 7 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. to benefit the Madison Schools athletic department. Joe and Maria Lah, Olga Mauser, and Bill and Barbara Holtrey say the entire gross sales from this event will be donated to the athletic fund. All personnel at the restaurant will also be donating their time Sunday. “We want to help the youngsters have a chance to participate in the sports programs,” Josef Lah said. As of now, the Madison school district is in desperate need of money, and there will be no school athletics this year. However, if $16,000 is raised by the middle of March, they will open the sports program which include boys baseball, girls softball, tennis, and boys and girls track. Maria Lah says, “We’re located in Madison, and we want to help the community in the best way possible.” The personable Bill Holtrey, who grew up as part of an Amish family in the Her-shey,' Pa. rural area, and is in charge of the kitchen with 18 years experience in that capacity, and his efficient and gracious wife, Barbara, have children in the school system and are determined to help the athletic program endure. Cross country skiing is still continuing at the four-story building with complete rental facilities available. Also, there is a new bar and fireplace in the lower level and a game room to occupy customers waiting for tables. During weekends, musical entertainment will be provided there as well as in the second floor restaurant with dance floor. This Friday and Saturday evening the Alpine Sextet will entertain. The Swiss Haus owners ask all \heir friends and fellow Slovenians to please come to their place on Sunday, March 7 and help them to help others. Joseph Lah, Sr. celebrated his 80th birthday on Sunday, Feb. 28 with a grand dinner party at the Swiss Haus restaurant in Madison, Ohio. The festivity was attended by over 50 friends and relatives who enjoyed a superb full course meal compliments of the three children: Josef Jr., Irene Rus, and Lenka Chauby and their families. Members of the singing group Fantje na Vasi provided vocal harmony entertainment. A 20-minute speech was given by Josef about the life of his father. The birthday celebrant at one time owned the castle in Mala Vas parish of Dobrnič, Slovenia where Bishop Baraga was born and years later, Josef Jr. was born in the same room. Eckart (D-Ohio). A House Public Works Subcommittee heard sponsor testimony Wednesday from Congressman ' Harold E. Ford (D-Tennessee) on the measure, which also extends the life of the interstate substitution program for five years until 1988. “If enacted, the proposal would free $55 million that is presently limited to use on capital assistance and construction projects for operation of RTA,” Eckart said. “Cleveland stands to benefit greatly from this legislation, which vests local officials with more options on how to use federal resources to meet their individual needs.” Transfer funds would be available in Northern Ohio as a result of a decision made by officials there not to build a freeway link on 1-490 between Broadway Avenue and 55th Street to Broadview Heights, Eckart explained. -----o------ Meeting Slov. A number of clubs and committees were formed headed by Dr. Miha Krek, Msgr. John J. Oman of St. Lawrence, Anton Grdina and Matt Intihar. But all their efforts wouldn’t have gotten anywhere if it weren’t for the Slovenian Catholic Daily “Ameriška Domovina”, which went all out to help the refugees. The owner and editor of this newspaper was Jack Debevec, whose 30th anniversary of his death will be March 6th. Communistic propaganda turned many people against the refugees, claiming they were traitors, but today after 35 years, the world knows that what Ameriška Domovina wrote about Tito was the truth. For this firm anti-Communistic stand, credit goes to the late Jack Debevec. Although the enemy tried with their propaganda to ruin the newspaper, Jack Debevec didn’t stop, because he knew eternal justice was on his side. Ameriška Domovina finally won the fight and today is proud of its stand. With this, the paper and its late editor and owner Jack Debevec, earned an honored position among all the Slovenian newspapers. Today, at the 30th anniversary of his death, the American anti-Communistic group remembers with thanks and pride. Glory to Jack Debevec and may Ameriška Domovina live long. Short biography of Jack Debevec Born July 25, 1887, he would have been 95 years old this year. His oldest brother, Rev. (Prof.) Joseph Debevec, was known especially for his translation of “Dante’s Inferno.” Jack was the youngest and loved by all his brothers and sisters, especially because his mother died when he was three years old. At that time, relatives took him into their home, but when his brother, Joseph, became a professor and had a position in Ljubljana, he took Jack to live with him and he sent him to school. When he was transferred to Kranj, he took Jack with him, sent him-to high school and then Jack completed Business School courses. His first position was at a Savings Bank and until, he went into military service, he worked at a Catholic publishing newspaper office. Returning home from military service, he returned to his old position for a while, until the old call of the outside world overpowered his heart. In Canada he did heavy work in a quarry, but left soon for a jpb as a painter at the Ford plant in Detroit. Jack Debevec didn’t stay long as a laborer. Being talented and bright and always studying, he started sending articles to Slovenian newspapers, among them, the Ameriška Domovina, where he came into contact with the late editor Louis Pirc. When he made enough to carry him for a while, he moved to Cleveland and started his own newspaper, but later left it to join the Ameriška Domovina as co-owner. When Mr. Pirc died, he paid off all his heirs and became owner and editor of Ameriška Domovina. It Was at this time his real life’s existence came into being. He burned with enthusiasm for his newspaper, giving it all his knowledge and capability. Its contents were lifted to a high level and the circulation of the paper spread over the whole country. To the last day of his life, he wrote spirited editorials and gathered all the news himself. As an unusually clever writer, he amused his readers, and as a patriot he always reminded them of their duty to their nationality, as well as their duty to their new country. He raised a most beautiful monument to his home in his column, “Če verjamite al’ pa ne” (Believe it or not). As a newspaper man, Jack Debevec proved he should be counted not only among the best of American Slovenians, but altogether or any Slovenian newspaperman. Most of all, he always saw to it that Ameriška Domovina was written in the Catholic spirit, while th^ majority of the American Slovenian newspapers tuimed to international socialism, and during the last war even wrote in a Communistic spirit. He was married twice. In 1947 he married Mary Andol-sek, whom he immortalized in his column, “Naša Micka ma tud besedo” (Our Mary also has a word”. In his spare time, he loved to go hunting and fishing. In his last years he complained many times about his heart and said he will have to rest more. But his love for his newspaper wouldn’t let him. rest and stay home as the doctor ordered. He died on March 6, 1952 at 9:30 a.m. in St. Vincent Charity Hospital. Ghio ftedistrlcting Goes Before Gommilfee The Ohio House of Representatives refused this week to concur qn the Senate amendments of the congressional redistricting legislation, H.B. 20. ' The political battle over how to redraw the boundaries of Ohio’s- congressional districts has now moved to a six-member conference committee. Conferees who have been appointed are Rep. Terry Tranter, D-Cincinnati; Barney Quilter, D-Toledo; and Michael Fox, R-Hamilton; and Senators Thomas Van Meter, R-Ashland; Paul Matia, R-West-lake; and Charles Butts, D-Cleveland. The committee has been handed two very different redistricting plans, one approved by the Ohio Senate and one approved by the Ohio House. Since the bill orginated in the House, the conference committee will begin work on the Plouse version of the bill. Ohio’s congressional districts will decrease from 23 to 21 because the population in Ohio did not grow as much as other parts of the country in the last decade. If the conference committee does not come to an agreement on a plan acceptable to both the House and Senate, the boundaries of the 21 districts Ohio will have for the next 10 years to be drawn by a federal court. Leaders of both Houses hope an agreement can be made so that the issue does not have to go to federal court. Meetings will begin by the committee again next week in an attempt to work out a compromise on the issue. The new redistricting law must be completed by the March 25, 1982, filing deadline for the Congressional candidates. Ronald J. Šuster D-18 Representative At the Slovenian Women’s Union National Convention in May of 1967 a resolution was adopted pledging moral support to the errection of a Slovenian Chapel in the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. Soon after, committees were formed and the nation-wide collection of funds began. Four years later, this dream became reality with the dedication of the Chapel on August 15, 1971. This event was one of the largest public gatherings of Slovenians in our American History. Through the interest, efforts and generosity of many, a lasting memorial of heritage and faith is preserved. The Slovenian Chapel serves several purposes: It is a visible sign of faith of the Slovenian people, and most importantly, a human expres-. sion of glory and praise to Almighty God. Visitors to the Shrine can see the gratitude of the Slovenian people for the many gifts they have received, namely; faith, a rich culture, and the opportunity to live and work in the land of freedom and endless opportunities. We had a dream and we made it reality. We did it once, LET’S DO IT AGAIN. In 1979 we had another dream and we’re making it reality. This time we plan to errect a memorial to the Slovenian Miner and Laborer. A local committee on the Iron Range and a Steering Committee' have been formed. As we look back to our early immigrants, there were not too many that did not find their livelihood in the mines, the factories or the mills spread across this country. How many of your grand-parents, parents, uncles, brothers, neighbors or friends did not work long and hard hours with their hands, for the well being of many? For some it was literally sweat, blood and tears. This proposed memorial will be errected at the Iron Range Interpretative Center in Chisholm, Minnesota, the area where many of our Slovenian people spent many hours working in the mines, and where some still do to the present day. The Artist working on this Project is the renown Lillian Brule of Jolje^. Illinois. She has already begun to collect her ideas and thoughts concerning the art pieces to be created. So this will be more than just a memorial, it will be a piece of art, expressing our culture and heritage; it will be a tribute to our forerunners in American Labor, and the pride of all those who still work in a productive manner. This will be everyones memorial, so everyone is asked to take part in its errection. For the Slovenian Chapel, we collected over $70,000.00 in a four year period. For the Slovenian Miners and Laborers memorial our goal is $10,000.00, which we hope to reach by the end of this year. We realize that for many these are days of economic hardship, but yet progress should never be hindered by temporary difficulties, rather history tells us some of the greatest achievements were realized when things were hard and challenging toward the human spirit. If we have the will, we can succeed. To date we have over $3,-000.00 collected. Our goal is not yet achieved so we still need the help, and cooperation of all our fraternal organizations, clubs and individual donors. We know that with the Slovenian Chapel not all our organizations and individuals participated, because it was of a religious nature and not all our people are of the Catholic Faith. This should not be the case with the Slovenian Miners and Laborer Memorial. Regardless of what you believe or practice, or because of any ill feelings from the past, we are uniting as Americans and Slovenians, who have worked and realize the creative potential in our development that creative work produces. We also challenge our youth who will some day hopefully continue to build this land as a place of peace and freedom, with justice and opportunity for all. We did it once, LET’S DO IT AGAIN! Whatever your contributions, all will be gratefully accepted. Let’s show our solidarity. Our oneness. Our pride. Maybe for the first time we can unite and work together for a common goal while expressing our pride and good will. Most people remain unaware that there were two versions of a tax bill: THE HOUSE WAYS AND MEANS BILL AND THE ADMINIS-STRATION’S BILL. As I’m sure you are aware, the Administration had the opportunity to make a passionate appeal for their bill on national television. Perhaps, had Ways and Means Committee been granted equal time, the American people would have been presented the total picture. They njight have even opted for the House version. I supported the House Ways and Means bill for numerous reasons, many of which I would like to share with you. My choice was relatively simple. INDIVIDUAL INCOME TAX — I am concerned about the majority of Americans who earn between $15,000 and $50,-000 per year; therefore, I supported the Ways and Means tax bill. In contrast, under the Administration’s tax bill passed on Wednesday, 35.1% of the individual tax cuts in 1982 will go to 5.6% of the population — those making $50,000 or more a year. Also, the share going to the top .2% of taxpayers who earn $200,000 or more is computed at 10.4%. In my mind, there is no question that the moderate and middle-income family should have reaped the greatest benefits. That’s precisely why I supported the House Ways and Means version which directly targeted those workers and families who are the bulwark of strength of our Nation. BUSINESS INCENTIVES — I am also concerned that bqsiqess in our great country must be given a booster shot. It seems to me, however, that the greatest tax incentive should be directed toward spiall business. In contrast, the Administration’s bill gives © the lion’s share of tax relief fi to the corporate giants. It con- l| tains four times less for small Q businesses. The proposal for depreciation clearly favors large capital intensive industries. If my memory serves me correctly, these provisions along with the lack of equitable targeting of the individual tax breaks appear to fly in the face of campaign promises less than a year old! REVITALIZATION CONCERNS — As we each know, revitalization and reindustrializaticn plans for our older urban areas are critical for their survival. Huge oil and energy rebate provisions in the Administration’s bill, totaling $16 billion over the next five years, hardly address the needs of tool and die manufacturing and metal fastners industry, to name but two of the industries crucial to our greater Cleveland areas economic health. FINAL ANALYSIS — Ultimately, legislative procedure precluded a vote on the House Ways and Means Tax Bill. Initially, the Administration’s bill was considered an amendment to the Ways and Means proposal. While I personally opposed the amendment, in fact it was adopted by the full House. It then became the only tax bill to be voted on. At that point only did I cast a vote in the affirmative. Had I had the opportunity, I would have supported the Ways and Means proposal. I sincerely believe that the House bill would have been faithful to its commitment to those who bear the heaviest tax burdens: middle and moderate income families, working men and women, small businesses and older cities. SOCICAL SCEURITY — MINIMUM BENEFIT On another note of equal import, the House of Representatives voted to approve the version of the budget agreed upon by the House and Senate. The provisions in the bill were mainly proposed by the Administration. It is, indeed, tragic that this bill incorporates the Administration’s recommendation to eli- minate the $122 minimum benefit for social security recipients. Cv~r 3 million of our elderly citLcns now receive benefits. Their benefits will be drastically reduced or eliminated due to a recalculation of these benefits to reflect their actual earnings histories. ANTON M.
