PUST ^T^he spotlight of the world will shine on A- Cleveland this summer when we host the 2004 International Children’s Games. Cleveland will dem-°nstrate to the world that it is an international, cosmopoli-^n city on America’s North Coast. When all the positive features of Cleveland are considered, it is clear to see Jnat Cleveland is a natural bridge across the Atlantic to In® rest of the world. One of jne best attributes of Cleve-and is its cultural diversity. Cleveland’s greatness is largely due to the immigrants ^ho settled here and called Icveland their home. Some of the most persecuted groups in Europe, such as survivors of the Holocaust and victims of other ethnic cleansings, found peace and prosperity in Cleveland. This city benefited greatly from this influx of immigrants, many of whom are now Cleveland’s leaders and benefactors. The organizations built by these immigrants grew from humble neighborhood institutions into multimillion dollar enterprises. Small local banks, credit unions, fraternal insurance associations, and tool shops grew into thriving industries. Entrepreneurial initiatives developed into large businesses. Immigrants have impacted every public and private sector. Today you can find immigrant names on new university buildings, community centers, and renovated cultural palaces. Neighborhood activists became mayors, governors, congressmen, and senators. Priests from small parishes advanced to the top of the diocese. Entertainers from the basements of Collinwood halls went on to the Polka Hall of Fame and Grammy Music Awards. Children of immigrant parents traveled to space as astronauts. Cleveland immigrants have also played an important role in preserving ethnic culture. We have maintained within America’s heritage some unique traditions lost in Europe. America is stronger because of this richness. Cleveland knows that its success is due to its diversity, and it keeps its door open for other immigrants. These new immigrants will be the new bridge builders between our community and the rest of the world. Cleveland is known worldwide for its multicultural and religious diversity and educational opportunities for a better life. As a student visiting from Slovenia, I encountered a wide range of excellent educational institutions. Also, like many others, I had a chance to experience global diversity at its best. It was through Cleveland’s ethnic neighborhoods that I discovered the world. At cultural festivals, church events, .picnics, and ON™™ PROFESSOR METOD KLEMENC ON JULY 29. 2004. (Photo by PHIL HRVATIN) banquets, I met many new friends. Most importantly, I met my wife, Gloria, who is also from Slovenia. It was in Cleveland that I started my new life as many others did by joining a large and extended multicultural community. This community provided many wonderful experiences for me and my family. Our daughter Adriana had the chance to leam the Slovenian language and traditions at a Saturday parish school and was able to join other Slovenian youth in a dance group. These opportunities, and many others, such as singing societies, gymnastic clubs, scout groups, and camping sites, still exist for families today. Cleveland’s amateur cultural groups also continue to present operas, dramas, concerts, and other theatrical productions that equal any professional ensemble. Our nationality radio programs (which have been broadcast for over 40 years) continue to enrich our social life, and newspapers (some approaching a century of publication) inform us of issues and events. The Cleveland Cultural Gardens are not just a Cleveland monument; they are a tribute to the international origins from which so many Clevelanders spring. Clevelanders can be proud of our many accom- plishments. The city is known for its cultural diversity and has a reputation for welcoming visitors and newcomers with great hospitality. We must continue to build up Cleveland’s potential and strive to make our city into a true cosmopolitan destination. Currently we have several unique opportunities that can ensure Cleveland’s success as a partnership city to the rest of the world. We would benefit greatly from an updated version of a Cleveland ethnic directory, both printed and electronic, that includes present international contacts such as foreign consulates, international trade and business development panels, small businesses and chambers of commerce, import and export stores and distribution centers, investment groups, bankers, ethnographic museums, international visitor and student exchange groups, sister city programs, and overseas contacts in educational and medical centers. The last directory that included this information was published in 1990 and is now out of date. An updated directory will provide our business, political, social, and cultural leaders with international contacts. These stakeholders can use the directory for economic development, international trade, travel, and tourism. The Convention Center is another opportunity for Cleveland to make an international impact. Any future plans or campaigns for building a Cleveland Convention Center should include international components such as import and export gift shops, gourmet restaurants and food courts, and multicultural information centers for events and sites. It should be one comprehensive center under one roof. Such development is economically sound and politically smart. The people of Cleveland are great champions of universal human rights and the freedom of captive nations. We have fought for the liberation of Europe in both World Wars and many other conflicts. Many of our veterans’ halls and posts, including the Ohio Veterans’ Hall of Fame, can attest to this. We joyfully witnessed the downfall of communism in the Soviet Union and have enthusiastically supported new democracies around the globe. We are big supporters for continuing the expansion of NATO and for admitting our countries of origin to the European Union. The people of Europe, especially in the new democracies, are aware of our efforts. No. 29 July 29, 2004 * I MEFLEcnom §r mmv A Letter From Bill by RUDY FLIS Each week, as I put my thoughts on paper, I pray at least one reader derives a small benefit from my thoughts. This past week I received a letter from American Home subscriber William Majerle, of San Jose, CA. What had caught his eye was an article about the closing of Malensek’s Meat Market. William covered many interesting points in his letter. It was plain to see he enjoys reading the American Home newspaper and is interested in the quality of the paper and its articles. That is why he wrote me; whenever I write about that delicious morsel of soul food we call “klobasa” I neglect that it is singular, and there is a plural, klobase. I never knew this. Thanks William. I am one word wiser in my limited Slovenian vocabulary. I called my good friend Marie Dular to test her skills of the Slovenian language. She said “William was right,” and then told me klobasa and klobase were of the feminine gender. Thanks, Marie. William wrote me of the many pounds of klobase that graced the tables of Slavic people in California, klobase made by the Malenseks. Ken and Tom Malenšek told me this year that I was their number one customer, as I purchased their klobase every month of the year for my family and for my many customers who are hooked on the taste of the Slovenian klobase. William Majerle wrote me of an old saying about Malensek’s klobase, “You-can’t eat only one Malenšek klobasa; they are so good you are driven to eat more than one klobase.” To supply my customers with klobase, I patronize Radell’s on E. 152 St., or Maple Hts. Catering on Broadway in Maple Hts., Ohio. It seems my customers enjoy Slovenian klobase, no matter what store it is purchased from. It looks like it just has to be smoked in Cleveland to be delicious. Well, William how did I do on my lesson of, “May I have a klobasa sandwich,” and then “May I have a couple of pounds of klobase?” I enjoyed your letter and appreciate that you took the time to help me in correctly writing about the Slovenian sausage. At my baptism I am sure many ate a klobasa sandwich. During my life I have eaten many klobasa sandwiches. Perhaps one of my children will put a klobasa on a piece of rye bread, add horseradish, take a bite, pause, savor the flavor, and then say, “This one is for you, Dad.” (Continued from page 1) and presidents readily confirm this. We are linked by nature and affection to Europe. We must become advocates and build public and private community partnerships on a global level. Our next chance to affirm Cleveland as an international city will be this summer. The Cleveland 2004 International Children’s Games will be a beautiful way to highlight Cleveland’s international status. It will also be a wonderful opportunity to put our multilingual talents to the test as we leam how to say “Dobrodošli!” (Welcome) to Cleveland in a dozen different languages. * * * Recommended references: The Encyclopedia of Cleveland History by Indiana University Press - Case Western University, 1987, Continental magazine published by Continental Airlines, March 2000 issue. For 39, she stays in shape but then she spends her time in the pool. I’m not as brave as her for when I take a shower I still take a life preserver with me. Well, enough about my health and in researching back issues, the last time I wrote a real column I talked about my Aunt Ursula and Dr. Cortner and his chewing me out thinking that all the empty beer bottles on her sink were mine and said I had a drinking problem when it was actually Ursula who was doing the beer drinking. From that point on, I made sure that there were no more beer bottles on her sink for God only knows when Dr. Cortner would pop in again. In his last visit at her house when I was there I said, “Doc, we are going to have to get together so you and now you gotta list day by day when you seen her and what you did.” Okay, he says, now you tell me what day she was admitted. Holy cow; I can see already we are going to have fun making out this form. I said, “Don’t you have any notes that you made on her?” “God, who has time to make notes. I just see patients.” Lord, lord, are you listening, 1 need help with this “cool doctor.” can make out the necessary paper work for her stay in the hospital and we can get the money back that I paid you in Cold Cash.” “Okay,” he said, “Stop by my office on Thursday and we will work on it, after I see my last patient.” For some reason he felt I had to be there to help him with the paperwork. Perhaps he was the greatest doctor that West Park ever had, for he did make house calls, but when it came to paperwork, he didn’t know diddle from squat. So Ray takes a half day off from work and trots up to his office on W. 98th and Lorain and waited, and waited, and waited, until he was through with his last patient. Okay, he says, I am ready, and let’s get this over with in a hurry, I had a long day and want to get home to get something to eat. Tell me about it Doc, I been sitting here for well over an hour and a half. I said, “Well, Doc, I took the liberty of starting the Medicare paperwork, got her name typed in and all the basic information Let’s see, he said. Well for the first day put down I took her vital signs, blood pressure, temperature, etc. Okay, doc, now what about day two. Hmm, day two, put down I took a blood test. Okay, now we are up to day three, what did you do? Hmm, let me see, odd dam, how can 1 remember; that was a month ago. Come on doc, day three, we have eight more days to explain after this. Okay, put down urinalysis. Fine now day four. Odd dam, I knew I should have packed a lunch for it seemed that we would be there all night trying to figure out what he did each day. Finally, I said. Doc, I am tired of writing this stuff down, you do the writing from here on out. We are now on page two. Okay, he says, let me at it. Figure it out, eight dollars for each day I visited her at the hospital, plus 25 dollars for getting her admitted and another 25 dollar fee for getting her released and so all together that should come out to $114.00. That is what you paid me, at the hospital, right? Right, Doc. Well, go ahead and add it up to insure it comes to $114.00. Sorry doc, it adds up to $122.00. What do you mean $122.00; it can’t be. Did you take math in school? Yes Doc, and I got a “B” in math. Let me see those papers; you don’t know how to add, I’ll add them up. So he proceeds to add it up and says, “Hmm, you are right, it does add up to $122.00. How can that be, I only charged you $114.00. I said, Doc, let me look at the two pages again, something has got to be wrong. Yep there it was, when he started on page two of the forms, he repeated the same date that he left off with on page one. I said this is YOUR error, you repeated the day twice. I’ll be dam; you are right. I said, this looks like crap, let me take it home, retype it with only one set of dates and I’ll drop it off tomorrow after work. You sign it and I will get it in the mail so that we can get my money back that I originally paid you. Here I was in my 30s and already turning gray. When I finally got it all squared away, I said, “Doc, you are going to have to keep better records of your patients and what you do for them on each visit. We got the money back thru Medicare but that was not the end of Dr. Cortner, for in a visit later at the house he said she could not go up and down the stairs and would have to get a hospital bed. Okay, we got a rented hospital bed and the fun began with my aunt. Dealing with Dr. Cortner and trying to teach him math and keeping records, but trying to explain bed rental to my aunt was a different story. Well, we will have to continue with that saga in the next issue, but before I close I have to tell you some good sayings to prove to my readers that even though I had trouble teaching math to an old doctor, I still know some wise sayings. Are you ready? The best way to get even, is to forget. Feed your faith and your doubts will starve to death. God wants spiritual fruit, not religious nuts. Some folks wear their halos much too tight. Some marriages are made in heaven, but they all have ■to be maintained on earth. Unless you can create the whole universe in five days, then perhaps giving God advice isn’t a good idea. Remember, sorrow looks back, worry looks around, and faith looks up. Standing in the middle of the road is dangerous. You will get knocked down by traffic from both directions. Words are windows to the heart. Well, I have more but I am at the bottom of the page. In closing, may the Good Lord bless and watch over all of our readers and keep them in good health, the greatest asset we have. Euclid, OH 44132 216-731-9780 Fondly Remembering Friend Boleslav Povsic by Richard Krill 1) I first met my friend Boleslav at the annual meeting of the Ohio Classical Conference in October, 1968. Let me tell you why I remember that occasion so vividly. I was new to the faculty of the University of Toledo. Boleslav and Donald Poduska, a mentor of mine from John Carroll University, prevailed upon me to accept a position as one of the officers of this society. Before long, I found myself as president, not once, but twice. Boleslav reminded me that he, too, had served twice and that I should not worry about problems. 2) As fellow classicists from neighboring institutions, it was not long before Boleslav and I became good friends. We discovered that we had more in common than our classical interests. Both of our families were Catholic. Although you might say that we both found ourselves a bit on the conservative side of things, in the case of Slauko, I must admit that it was the good old-fashioned type of conservative Catholic. Pope John Paul comes to mind, and my dear father who recently celebrated his 101st birthday. No meat ever on Fridays for him. 3) Both Boleslav and I were fortunate to have married loving wives (Francka and Mary Louise) who sacrificed much for the education of our young children (Tom and Maria, and my own three daughters Gina, Michelle, and Mimi). 4) Throughout the 70s, 80s, and much of the 90s we shared many dinners and took many walks together both in Toledo at Wildwood and in Bowling Green, always sharing the latest stories about our children. Boasting? Yes and no. 5) On the professional side, Slauko encouraged me in 1972 to make application to participate in an international conference on classical studies which was to be held in Romania. This was nothing new for him as he attended many such conferences in Europe. On this occasion the Povsic family departed for Europe a few weeks before I knew I was accepted for participation. What a delightful surprise we had later when we met on a flight from Paris to Bucharest when our plane stopped in Belgrade to take on a few new passengers. Because we were not permitted to deplane in Yugoslavia, you can imagine how delighted we Boleslav Povsic were to see the familiar faces of Slauko, Francka and Tom get on board. 6) The protracted illness of Francka in the 90s and her eventual death just a fe"' years ago was a severe blow to the family. Despite his many trips to North Carolina to see Tom and weekly or at times daily visits to Bowling Green by Maria, Slauko found himself quite lonely' The emptiness of the house soon drove him to re' establish ties with the Slovenian community in greater Cleveland, and this is where Draga came into the picture. Over the period during which their relationship grew, Slauko had many conversations with Mary and me. Was it right to marry ^ they discovered that they truly loved one another? My response was that it was in' deed if this would lead them to their ultimate goal - to an eternity in heaven. What 3 wonderful thing - the power of love. Since their marriage* I have been fortunate enough to visit them in Twinsburg on a few occasions an drove from Toledo to Akron to see my aging father. Moreover, Jesus has declared that He is the good Shepherd that He knows his sheep and His sheep know His voice (John 10) When we prayed, she recognized His voice. As one person said to me before I entered the hospital 13 years ago: “You are in a win-win situation. If you are healed, you win; if you die, you are with the Lord, and you win.” Circumstances are that I am here, and Bemie is with the Lord. We are both winners; albeit she now holds the grand prize, and her race is over. To better understand Bemie, let’s look back a few years. The best time of Bemie’s life was her four years at John Carroll University. As a young adult, she lived the college life to the hilt: academically and socially. But I got to know her in the magical time of life when Sveti Miklavž, that is St. Nicholas was real, and children obeyed their parents, and boys were, well, yukkk. It was at Camp Pristava. Camp Pristava is a one-week summer camp for children of the Slovenian language schools. Founded in 1965 and revived in 1976, I was asked to lead it which I did for three years, and it continued thereafter for several years. As counselors, we were pseudo-surrogate parents. It was a magical time because everyone was young and full of life. The 10 mile hike wore out . everyone, however, except for the likes of Bemie and her cousin, Martha, who were like sisters. My brother Frank was Bemie’s counselor. He noted how she was strong-willed but vulnerable. Bemie made her mark by being selected “Best Camper.” Another counselor Tom Štepec related his recollection; , “Perpi?. scepieU /itPn stand out from the rest of the campers. I can’t pinpoint exactly why today, but perhaps the combination of her vocal personality, high energy, a touch of stubbornness, a relentless desire to kid me, and her cute page boy haircut had something to do with it. I suppose what attracted me most about Bemie was her zest for life and her spunky ‘can do’ attitude. “From that point forward, whenever we had a chance, we would engage in frequent conversations. The subjects covered all sorts of topics that a 19-year-old can safely cover with a 10-year-old. With Bemie, the questions would fly a mile a minute. I found at times that I straggled to keep up with her. She was a challenge, but a challenge that I enjoyed.” Tom continues, “One of my fondest memories of Bemie took place during a late-night group campfire. It was a typical day for Bemie, running at 100 miles an hour. I recall how she made it a point to sit near me during the campfire and engage in one of our typical conversations. After a hurried conversation and frequent inquiries over which female counselors I was attracted to (she was relentless), I paused for what seemed to be a few minutes to engage in another conversation. As I turned back to Bemie to continue our talk, I discovered that she had curled up on the blanket we were all sitting on and was fast asleep. I couldn’t help but be amazed over how quickly it seemed that she transformed from an apparent high state of alertness to a deep sleep. As I watched her sleep for a moment, I recall thinking what a great child she was and began to wonder what the future held for her. With her argumentative skills and extroverted personality, I had imagined she would one day make a fine attorney. Upon conclusion of the campfire, I gently picked her up and carried her to her bunk and whispered, ‘Good night, Bemie. Tomorrow is another day. God willing, I hope I have the energy to handle you.’” When Bemie was 15 years old, she graduated from camper to junior counselor. Since she had many years oi-camping experience, she was teamed with counselor Ed Hren who had never been to Camp Pristava. As Ed relates it, whenever the campers had a question, he directed them to Bemie since she knew what to do. He may have trusted her too rpuch, bpwevqr, Rurppr has . i it-thaf • Bemie," -tortlr * 'Ed'r ‘'' permission, borrowed his car to drive from the parking lot to the camp site in the woods. It was accessible by a country lane that twisted, dipped, and rose like a rollercoaster. Nevertheless, Bemie confidently drove Ed’s car into a tree. Needless to say, there were profuse apologies, great hand-wringing, and concern about the damage. Bemie’s strengths that were already evident at camp were evidence of her strong will to live. She survived longer than expected because of her indomitable spirit; one of her nurses at the ICU described Bemie as “Our miracle.” She lives on in our hearts and with the Lord God. The irony of today is that some of you are here in this church for two occasions that are seemingly worlds apart. At this time we are here to say good-bye to Bemie, and then, in a couple of hours, to turn around, emotionally speaking, 180 degrees, and say hello to Michelle and Matt as they exchange vows to begin their new life together. What a difference in moods and feelings: now we are here with somber faces and heavy hearts; later there will be smiles and laughter. Ultimately, it is about relationships. And in our broken humanity, that is how we experience it. St. Paul [Romans 5] says that affliction makes for endurance, endurance for tested virtue, and tested virtue for hope. This hope is fulfilled with the love of God poured out in us through the Holy Spirit. Our experience of death and life today is not as opposite as it seems. Rather, just as Matt and Michelle will enter the bridal chamber § tonight, Bemie, who had never wed, has now entered, as a bride, the bridal chamber with her groom her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in eternal ecstasy and glory forever. We miss you Bemie. Thank you for the opportunity your last illness gave to us to spend a few moments with you and with each other so that we can renew our bonds of love, and glorify God. Your suffering has not been in vain. We are looking forward to being with you in that Camp Pristava in the sky where I will have hair on my head and we will do 10 mile hikes back-to-tyack. “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your might, and with all your mind.” Mk 12:30. SNYDER It is not every day that one encounters a real gentleman and a good guy. I had received two CDs from a friend, Dick Rini, because he knew that I was a Slovenian and thought I would enjoy listening to some of Joe Pet-^s fine piano playing in aories of Days Gone Bvl No.’s 1 and 2. songs range from aebody Else” to “New New York” to lous Heart” to “Return to land on CD No. 2 songs ‘The Band Played On,” pie Blossom Time,” Oh, Beautiful Doll” and many others. When I finally met Joe at Recher Hall a few months ago at the dance after the outstanding performance of “A Big Fat Slovenian Wedding” put on by Zarja, I asked him about sending me a copy of the words to the songs. Most were handwritten by Joe and copied for my use. This is well beyond the call of duty. I thank him wholeheartedly and I wanted the world to know of such kindness. Wjhen one writes about the oldeti days, e.g., pre-1960, it is difficult to recall all of the idiosyncrasies of individuals without being touchy. Some people say that they enjoy my articles and others remain silent and even might seethe inwardly. Some say that I have been somewhat adept at writing obituaries. How about the not-too-famous? Individuals remembered were what are considered “characters” who were part of our neighborhood. Often, a mere mention of their names sparks a grin or other reaction. This was evident when the article on nicknames was published. Legends and exaggerations are part of the milieu, so here goes. Tony Blatnik: Tony (Meeshie) passed away a few years ago and is remembered as a diminutive cheerful guy with limited worldly talents but a heart of gold. He sat near the front of St. Lawrence and sang loudly to the enjoyment or dismay of the worshippers. He spent his career at Cleveland City Hospital, now Metro, as a gardener and general handyman. He supported his mother and kept his yard in tiptop shape. Muscles: Always seen on election days passing out last minute campaign propaganda for his favorite candidate. He helped make grocery deliveries in his little red wagon around the neighborhood. Bobby Grden: His exploits amongst the neighbors is legendary. His impish nature was a facade for a good-natured boy who had the makings of a solid citizen. Whisper: A friend of the Turk family who enjoyed song and laughter. His conversational tone was spoken indistinguishably from silence. Tony Cabooch: The neighborhood strong man that nearly matched the exploits of Peter Zebich, that famous Croatian from Pennsylvania who ventured into the neighborhood infrequently to demonstrate his prowess of strength. Just the mention of their names brings about a smile and an individual story that is probably not appropriate for publication in consideration of their families. Some other names come to mind, only to mention a few: Gooch, Springey, Skipper, Rooster, Gumps, Jonda, Jocko, Wimpey, Yankers, Boisey, Spinach, Shinkey, Oscar, Nondy, Laddie. As the saying goes, “If you cannot say something good about a person, say nothing at all.” Propriety demands the imagination to prevail. Incidentally, when one praises one person or a business, one often offends those who were omitted. Some feedback is very instructive inasmuch as oversights are a basic part of a limited mind. When writing about unsung heroes, we failed to mention a couple of florists who serviced the St. Lawrence community. Arko’s Florist on E. 78Ih and Welling Florist on E. 93rd. Tom Welling was always gracious to back some of our ball players when they needed uniforms and equipment. He would have his right hand man Richie Blatnik take flowers to St. Lawrence on Saturday afternoons to decorate the altars. His generosity was usually taken for granted or just overlooked. Richie took over his business when Tom retired and continued to service the St. Lawrence community. Beanie Resnik was an unassuming grocer who kept the tradition of Slovenian sausage making in the neighborhood well into the early 1990s. He catered to the old-timers who no longer tould venture into the streets for their shopping. As a trusting soul, he overlooked some hard-pressed families as their debts mounted. He still volunteers at the Slovenian National Home as his health is not up to 100%. No matter how we now enjoy the material blessings that engulf our nation, we still look back at the old days and recall the St. Lawrence neighborhood and proudly announce to the world that we grew up with the best environment which was conductive to enjoying the times. The day began with a noon Mass celebrated by Father Joseph P. Boznar, pastor, St. Vitus parish. Fr. Boznar’s homily centered on the theme of hospitality and how Sacred Scripture directs us to act and behave toward one another with an open mind and heart. Immediately following the Mass, a well-prepared dinner was provided under the direction of Linda Plečnik and the dedicated volunteers from the parish. The 315 dinners were quickly served with the main portion of the dinner consisting of breaded chicken/roast beef. Side dishes included Slovenian home-style potatoes, salad plate, selection of fruit as well as various summer vegetables, bread/butter, choice of beverage, and home-made pastry. The afternoon consisted of children’s games, a newly installed putt-putt course, an animal petting and horse riding farm, and the wonderful listening and dancing sounds of the Joey Tomsick Orchestra. As a special treat, a young group of men from the parish, known as the “Figa 5” performed to the delight of one and all. Despite the cloudy and announced rain showers, no rain visited Pristava. The sun broke through in the afternoon providing for a normal lazy summer July day. For those seeking to cool off from the heat, the junior sized Olympic pool was a welcome relief. The kitchen provided more than ample servings of food during the remainder of the afternoon under the direction of Helena Percic and another wonderful group of parish volunteers and friends. A food specialty known as čevapčiče (rolled lamb, veal, pork, etc., with a number of spices and cooked on an open barbecue grill) was provided under able direction of Anci Mihelič and Kristjan Sedmak. Every person in attendance commented on how pleasant the volunteers were as well as the wide variety of food to choose. A side Chinese and special raffles were held. The Main Raffle was held around 7 p.m., with an assortment of prizes. The parish displayed two sets of photos to provide a visual presentation of the progress on the current church roof and maintenance project. Nearly 80 pictures were viewed. The main purpose of the annual summer parish picnic is to promote fellowship, cooperation, and friendship between parishioners and friends of the parish as well as a time to socialize and meet old/new friends. The secondary purpose is to raise funds for specific parish projects. This year’s net proceeds are to be used for the current church roof and maintenance project estimated to cost nearly $900,000. Based on the most current information, nearly $146,000 has been raised toward the parish goal of $350,000, or 42% of the goal total. The remaining $550,000 cost of the project will be provided from the parish endowment trust fund (over a four-year period), parish summer picnics (next three years), the net proceeds from bingo from the past 12 months (estimated at $55-to-$65,000), and one anonymous parish donation of $50,000. Three generous donations were made at the picnic. The Frances and Jane S. Lausche Foundation presented a $10,000 grant. Another $1,000 came from Fantony Construction Inc. (owned by Mr. Frank Bogatay), and $500 from Frank and Neda Bogatay. A note of thanks to the American Home/Ameriska Domovina, KSKJ Voice, Our Voice (AMLA), Tony Petkovšek Jr., Edi Mejac and Friends of Slovenian Program, Tony Ovsenik (Slovenian Hour), Plain Dealer, News Herald, Catholic Universe Bulletin, and all other media outlets for announcing this event to the general public. An accounting report should be available within the next 30-to-45 days. A note of congratulations to Frank Zitko, chairperson, summer picnic committee, and committee members for planning a pleasant summer event. —Stane Kuhar St. Mary’s Summer Picnic St. Mary’s (Collinwood) Summer Picnic will be held on their patronal Feast Day, (Sunday) Aug. 15th at Slovenska Pristava. A Saucy Festival That Celebrates The Tomato (NAPS)—Each September, a few thousand rabid tomato devotees— many of whom are also wine fans— descend on California’s Sonoma County Wine Country, for a day of tomato love and appreciation. Some 200 varieties of heirloom tomatoes grown in the Kendall-Jackson gardens are available for tasting, along with wine pairing seminars and a celebrity chef cook-off. In celebration of the approaching tomato season, the winery offers these fun facts: • The tomato is a member of the nightshade family, making it a cousin of the eggplant, the red pepper, the potato, the ground cherry, the tomatillo, and the highly toxic belladonna, also known as deadly nightshade. • All tomatoes belong to the genus lycopersicon, meaning "wolf peach.” • Wild cherry tomatoes are /indigenous, to tropical South Ameriba, Although they were first domesticated in Mexico. • The tomato is viewed by most people as a vegetable, but, by the botanical definition, the tomato is technically a fruit, “the ripened ovary of a seed plant and its contents.” In 1893, the United States Supreme Court ruled that, legally speaking, the tomato is a vegetable. The rationale was that fruits are generally served as dessert, while tomatoes are usually served during the main course of the meal. • As a rule, ripe tomatoes are best kept out of the refrigerator. Cold temperatures are the kiss of death to their flavor. • Tomatoes may be a significant tool in the fight against cancer, according to a recent report in the Journal of the National The tomato Is a cousin of tha eggplant, the red pepper, the potato and the highly toxic belladonna plants._________. Cancer Institute.” The report says a review of 72 studies indicated that eating tomatoes and tomato-based products reduced the risk of cancer, perhaps because of the antioxidant lycopene, a pigment predominantly found in this fruit. The strongest evidence was for protection against cancer of the prostate, lung and stomach, though there was evidence of benefit for the pancreas, colon, rectum, esophagus, oral cavity, breast and cervix. • Tomatoes are not only a good source of lycopene, but also contain beneficial amounts of vitamins A and C, folic acid and potassium. • Forty percent of Americans who raise their own tomatoes do it for taste, not health. On a small, sandy plot at a far edge of his 450-acre marsh lies a thin layer of scrubby vegetation that stands to bring star status to an unsung fruit. Mr. Hatch’s land is home to a “superberry” of sorts -the first new cranberry variety in decades. It not only will generate exceptionally dark, red berries, but also mature as much as three weeks earlier than traditional types, according to its creators at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Those characteristics have become the subject of juicy gossip in this state, which produces more than half of North America’s cranberries. Snowflakes and ice threaten to ruin crops nearly every year. Because cranberries get most of their color just before harvest, growers must decide whether to pick them early, before harsh weather sets in, or take a chance holding out for redder berries, which fetch premium prices. Don’t cry because it is over, smile because it happened. --St. Mary’s Alumni All men by nature desire to know. -John Mercina Funeral Homes Two Convenient Locations 28890 Chardon Rd. Tamare Griesser Pečar in dr. “Ta srednji, ta mladi in ta najmlajši” so poskrbeli za precej veselih uric pod šotori. Ko vsako leto, smo imeli tudi letos Triglavsko “olimpiado” - triathlon. Za vse to poskrbi naš športni referent Franci Mejač. Zlato Je dobil Thomas Mejač, srebrno Matthew Mejač in bronato Brian Segedin. Pokal so odnesli Ivan Bambič, Maryann Cimerman-čič, Thomas Mejač in Brian Segedin. Ko so marca 1944 šolo zaprli, so ga mobilizirali domobranci. Opravljali so najslabše delo. Ko so jih peljali proti Splitu, so v Liki i ves dan stali zaradi snežnega meteža. Če bi ostali v živinskih vagonih, bi zmrznili. V Splitu so jih vkrcali • na .ladjo, in prepeljali v Makar sko. Tam do dokončali hotel Tučepi in neko cesto. Tam so ga izpustili. Na poti so jih ustavili trije graničarji, Šip-tarji, in ubili nekega Hrvata. S posegi retuširanja in rekonstrukcijo so oživili prvotne freske obokanega prostora s tremi okenskimi nišami, poslikanimi z motivi zdravilstva. Slavnostna otvoritev prenovljene lekarne je bila 25. junija. Tl. Poleg 1163 vodenih ogledov, ki so jih pripravili sodelavci Nuka, sta strokovni vodja projekta Mihael Glavan in Igor Grdina opravila še osem polurnih specialnih ekspertnih vodstev. . US$ 435 tisoč). Od ministrstva za kulturo, sponzorjev in donatorjev je že prišlo 16 milijonov, od vstopnine in publikacij 27, in če bodo od ministrstva dobili še malo manj kot 17 milijonov, bodo z razporeditvijo sredstev za investicijsko vzdrževanje projekt pokrili. Milan Vogel Delo, 24. jun. 2004 70. obletnica Maribor, Kamnik - S krajšo slovesnostjo so v ponedeljek v Mariboru proslavili sedemdeseto o-bletnico smrti Rudolfa Maistra. Na trgu, poimenovanem po tem slovenskem pesniku in generalu, je zbranil nagovoril župan Boris Sovič in poudaril velik pomen dejanja Maistra in njegovih borcev, s katerim so v Mariboru in na celotnem območju današnje slovenske Štajerske vzpostavili slovensko oblast.
