Bodo torej previdni in imajo prav. Vzemimo stvari kar po vrsti! Pri pogajanjih naj imajo besedo štiri delegacije, ameriška, saigonska, vietnamska in OF. Njegova politika do pariških razgovorov bo očitno kratkoročna. Seveda ne bo hotel nikoli škodovati našim narodnim interesom, toda tvegal bo zanje le toliko, kolikor bo to treba do 20. januarja. V našem slučaju Johnsona in Nixona. Novi predsednik se tega zaveda in bo temu primerno usmerjal svoje korake v domači in v mednarodni politiki. Najprej bo moral posvetiti svojo pozornost vojni v Vietnamu. Z vso skušnjo in priznano spretnostjo ne bo mogel rešiti vseh zadovoljivo in v skladu z željami in pričakovanji prebivalstva dežele. V prvem odboru so bili poleg drugih še g. Lojze šef in g. Ivan Novak. Prireditve Štajerskega kluba so postajale vedno bolj priljubljene. Sleherni Slovenec bodi varuh svojega brata! Za svojo požrtvovalno delo bodo v soboto prejeli diamantno predsedniško značko sledeči: Jože Špindler, Franček Toplak, dr. Stane Šušteršič, Tone Meglič, Karl Gumzej, Jože Zelenik in Miodrag Savernik, ki vodi klub in prišia je Martinova nedelja! že od leta 1964. Zlato značko bodo za svojo požrtvovalnost prej e 1 i sledeči: Silva Savernik, Franček Kolarič, Tončka Špindler, Berta Lobe, Jože Resman, Jože Melaher, inž. Franček Gorenšek, Lojze Šef, Ivan Novak, Vinko Rožman, Franc Rantaša, Toni Hozjan, Karl Fajs, Mrs. K. Fajs, Rudi Kristavčnik, Alojz Frlinc, Franc Ljubeč, Rudi Pinter, Mirko Ant-loga, Stanko Kodrin, August Še-petavec, Ludvik Bausi, Milan Godler, Janez Winkler, Karl Kovač, Štefan Režonja, Lojze Kodrič ml., Franc Sinček, Rozika Jaklič, Franc Fujs, Milan Goršek, Matija Kavaš, Angela Ka-vaš, Lojze Grajzl, Stanko Skrbiš, Lojzka Feguš, Julka Frkul, dr. V omenjenem času so nas zapustili: 18. nov. 1967 br. . Glavni gostje za mizo so bili: John Blatnik, član Kongresa ZDA, Lud Andolšek, komisar civilne službe v Washingtonu in naš domači župnik Rev. Father Hayden. J. Blatnika. Po obedu je sledil bogat program. Glavni govornik je bil Lud Andolšek. Zatem je imel kratek govor naš kong. J. Blatnik. Sledili so pevci. “Angelovo češčenje” sta zapela v slovenščini Margaret Gornik, žena prej imenovanega, in naš rojak Joseph Rose. Ona ni slovenskega rodu in vendar sta bila njeno petje in izgovorjava pravilna. O-ba sta cerkvena pevca in vodite Ija petja. Seje klubov in društev so slabo obiskane. Videl sem Tabor-ko cerkev, farno cerkev in Gobovce. Lepo Vas pozdravlja Janez Rovanšek, Sudbury, Canada. * Dragi Janez! Vem, vsak berač svojo malho hvali, toda Podbrezje so Podbrezje. Moje srce gleda take kakor so bile takrat, ko sem jih bos premerjal. Take bom v srcu odnesel na drug svet. S Tvojo staro materjo sva blizu istih let. Demokratje so sicer zgubili nekaj mandatov v senatu in domu, toda ohranili so številčno večino. Ljudje so bili nekam žalostni in osramočeni. Največji pristaši “medplanetne komunikacije” so zdaj utihnili. Brž sem končal svoje Pelo in stopil v drugi sobo, kjer me je, kakor sem opazil, nestrp- no pričakoval. SHORTS on OLYMPIC STORY Mexico City, — If it is true that -all Olympic Games are supposed to have everything, then the 15-day drama which unfolded here between October 15 and 27 cannot be described with mere adjectives. For the combination of fantastic performances and thrilling victories set against a backdrop of intrigue, romance, controversy and melodrama made the Games of the XIX Olympiad the greatest of all. For the first time since 1952, the first year that Russia participated in the Olympics, the United States walked off with the “unofficial” team title, taking 107 gold, silver, and bronze medals to a total of 91 for the Soviets. The most stunning figure from the Americans’ standpoint was 23 gold medals in swimming alone, compared with a total gold haul of 29 for the archrival Russians. New Attack on Grid Injuries St. Louis, Mo. — At long last, a total look at “the entire football contact environment” has been arranged in' an effort to cut down on the rising incidence of injuries in professional, college and high school football. At the request of representatives of organized football and the medical profession, the American Society for Testing and Materials has called a conference at which coaches, trainers, team physicians, orthopedic surgeons, materials and design engineers and athletic equipment manufacturers will discuss the causes of football injuries, explore ways to prevent them and project plans for future research. The conference will be held in Philadelphia November 18-19. At Long Last, Moreno Gets Slice of Series Dough St. Louis, Mo. — Julio Moreno, who never collected a cent of World Series money as an active major leaguer, found the end of the rainbow this year as a batting practice pitcher. The 47-year-old Cuban, was hired in that capacity by the Tigers last spring. And when the Bengals won the pennant and World Series, the grateful players voted the righthander a full share, $10,936.66, for tossing the gopher balls during pregame practice. Moreno, who began his pro career in 1945 with the Mexican League, was with the old Washington Senators in 1950-51-52-53. The Nats failed to make the first division in any of those seasons and, as a result, didn’t share in the Series loot. Five other batting practice pitchers were cut in on the money—Marino Pieretti of the Giants ($300), Spud Murray and Vito Valentir.etti of the Yankees ($40.59 each) and Taylor Phillips and Bob Uecker of the Braves ($228.51 each). ------o------- Death fioilees Bonchak, Metro (Mike) — Father of Ann Sotka, Marie Grigonis, Katherine Spik, Joyce Kovac, Joseph, Edward, Helen Ivansek, Julie Lat-kovic, Walter, Michael, Jean Kuzu-pas. Resi-| dence at 1429 E. 43 St. Qlothiiig CoHecliGit in Thanksgiving Week The Very Rev. Msgr. Casimir S. Ciolek, Diocesan Director of Catholic Charities, has been re-named Director of the 20th Annual Thanksgiving Clothing Collection by the Most Rev. Clarence G. Issenmann, Bishop of Cleveland. Msgr. Ciolek said the drive for usable clothing will be held during Thanksgiving week November 25th through December 1st, in the eight-counties (Ashland, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Summit and Wayne) of the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland. Msgr. Ciolek said “serviceable men’s clothing and shoes, children’s and infant’s wear, blankets and bedding are the most urgent items needed.” Women’s clothing of a practical and serviceable nature are also much in demand.” More than 240 parishes will participate in the effort to collect and send usable clothing to the needy overseas. Last year Catholics in the Diocese of Cleveland contributed over 214 tons (429,467 lbs.) of the more than 10,000 tons (20 million lbs.) collected throughout the United States. Clothing collected in the Diocese is shipped to New York City for world-wide distribution by the Catholic Relief Services — USCC which operates relief and self-help programs in 80 countries throughout the world. A major share of the clothing contributed by generous Americans is distributed to the people in war devastated South Vietnam where the dislocation of families and individuals has caused an acute shortage of clothing and other bare necessities of life. Catholic Relief Services has also played a leading part in meeting the needs of the starving people of Biafra/Nigeria by distributing food clothing and medicine valued at over $3,000,000 ($3,331,702) since May of 1967. Central and South America, the Near and Far East and Africa are also benefited through the efforts of Catholic Relief Services. In addition to meeting needs of clothing on a long term basis, Catholic Relief Services “stock piles” a certain percentage of the clothing for disaster relief. All clothing is distributed to needy families and individuals without regard for race, color or religion. Fosl Office Seeks Bferks and Barriers Francis J. VETERANS DAY 1968 The commitment of the United States to battle in Viet Nam did not come because of direct attack against the territory or the armed forces of this nation. Our immediate survival is not the reason young men are called upon to fight as they were, for example, on the day of Pearl Harbor. Then the threat could be easily seen; there was nothing abstract about it. And, World War I was “the war to end wars.” The young men were called, and the nation stood behind them. Now, in the jungles of Asia, they fight again, and this time perhaps for the most urgent cause of all — to gain time in which the governments of the two great nuclear powers can recognize the realities of this age which they have created and learn new ways to settle their differences. Veterans Day is observed on November 11, for the purpose of honoring those veterans living and dead who have served in the U.S. armed forces in time of war. Special honor should be accorded to the veterans of Viet Nam — the men who still fight there and those who have yet to go. They do more than defend their country’s honor and ideals which in itself would be enough. They are buying time for the survival of civilization itself. wmwrm si vnos hols namer Sf, ¥iiiis Hoff ftfame News COMMUNION SUNDAY The second Sunday of the month is almost here, and it is time for all Holy Name members to receive Communion at our monthly Mass. PRIORITIES SHOULD BE ESTABLISHED. Time will be the best judge of the legislative work of the 90th Congress, during the past two years. One of my major complaints of the Administration’s spending programs was the absolute lack of setting priorities. It was a “something ror everybody” approach which created massive fiscal problems for our country and diluted and truly weakened vital programs. In the 91st Congress, I would hope that tax reform, including a new approach on revenue sharing with the states, would top the legislative agenda. Other urgent legislative needs to be considered should be Electoral College Reform, Draft Law Reform, a new approach to foreign aid, tax credits for educational expense, tax credits for manpower training to benefit the hardcore unemployed, and creation, of a new Hoover-type Commission to combat waste and duplication in a bulging administrative bureaucracy. These are just a few of the items. We must set priorities based on need and our ability to finance programs. The previous formula of one month of benefits for each month of service is revised to provide one and one half months of benefits per month of service. Thus a two year draftee now becomes eligible for 36 months of benefits, enough for four nine month academic years, instead of 24 months. There also is a special provision that if a veteran is released before his two years are up, he is entitled still to the maximum of 36 months at $130 a month, if he has completed at least 18 months of service. For the first time widows of veterans who die as a result of service are provided educational benefits. A widow is entitled to the amount of benefits her husband’s service allowed. Also, the wife of a veteran totally disabled as a result of service has the same eligibility. Benefits for’ widows are the same as for children of veterans who died or became totally disabled as a result of service — up to 36 months at $130 a month. The overall maximum remains at 36 months of benefits for veterans, and children and widows of veterans, but there are two exceptions: a veteran who is the child of a veteran who died or became disabled as a result of service, and has used up the 36 months of eligibility on the basis of that relationship, can get 12 months’ additional benefits on his own service. A veteran of the Korean War who became entitled to 36 months of benefits can qualify for 12 additional months on the basis of post-Korean service. A BETTER EXAMPLE NEEDED. Washington, D.C. is a Federal City ■— the Capital of the United States. It should be a showcase not only for its beautiful buildings, museums and memorials, but for its leadership in demonstrating a standard of conduct and an adherence to the American ideal of justice under law. V/ashington is the only jurisdiction in the U.S. where the Federal Government is wholly responsible for law enforcement and crime control. While crime has risen in. the nation by 88% since 1960, the latest complete comprehensive report indicates that serious felonies in the District of Columbia have jumped by 175% since, 1960. On the other hand, convictions have decreased by 37%. In 1967, for every 45 felonies committed in the Nation’s capital only one felony conviction resulted. It is an invitation for more crime in this city and an unfortunate example for the nation. The new Administration and Congress must be dedicated to reversing this trend. MAIL TO VIETNAM.
