Milin-******** Second Class postage paid at Cleveland, Ohio No. 231 Friday Nov. 30, 1962 Izdajanje slovenskega lista v tujini je težavna naloga Ob koncu druge svetovne vojne smo imeli Slovenci v Združenih državah štiri slovenske dnevnike, več kot naši rojaki v sami domovini. Zanimanje starejšega rodu je obrnjeno v ameriške razmere, v osebne vesti o starih znancih, v spomine in delno v razmere v starem kraju. Pišite več o Ameriki in slovenskih ljudeh tu! Važen del lista so povesili. V tem pogledu so resne težave. Zato porabimo to priliko in pojdimo poslušat božjo besedo. Deset minhut pred deveto boste odkazale prostore staršem in otrokom, otrokom sestra Paskala, staršem sestra Hedviga ...” “In bomo šolo takoj zapustile?” “Vam bom že še povedala.” “Po kateri cesti? Bomo ostale skupaj? Vprašanja so potihnila. Stopile so v krog. Ostale tri so še počakale. In zdaj, oh, in zdaj...” Zvonec je poklica!k zadnjemu počitku. This weapon now has reached the point where it can be turned out in, mass quantities. Tests have proved it highly effective against tanks, concrete bunkers, and sandbagged trenches. It weighs little more than a few loaves of bread. A soldier can carry it slung over his shoulder and not be burdened. A notable feature is that it is so safe that a soldier without protective clothing can fire it with confidence. It is the M72, nicknamed “Law” by soldiers. Cost of production has been cult down so that the price is about only that of a good transistor radio. The “pocket rocket” soon will be ready to be issued to troops everywhere. It is expected especially to increase greatly the efficacy of infantry units in the face of tark attacks. Gilchrist as good as Brown? Is Cookie Gilcrist in a class with Cleveland’s Jimmy Brown? Buffalo Coach Lou Saban gives a quick and unequivocal answer. ‘Cookie in some respects is a better all-round player than Brown,” said Saban. “He’s a superior blocker, both on pass protection and running blocks. An(f I'd have to say that he’s just as strong a runner. What Brown has is greater moves in the open.” President to Remain Neutral at Armv-Navy Tilt John F. Kennedy broke Presidential football precedent at ithe Army-Navy game last year and announced he’ll do the same this time. Rather than walk across the green but sometimes marshy soil of Philadelphia Stadium between halves in order to demonstrate his strict im partiality, the war-time PT-boat skipper viewed the entire game from a midlefield box on the west or home-team side of the field. He plans to do likewise on Saturday, December 1. This will maintain the Comman-der-in-Chief’s neutral status all right. Army was the home team last year; he’ll sit with Navy this time. Students of the occult will watch for other developments. From the Army side in 1961, President Kennedy saw Navy win, 13 to 7, while the man he beat in the national election, Richard N. Nixon, viewed proceedings from the relative obscurity of a 40th-row seat on the winning side. If Army should win this time despite the President’s presence among the Middies, could the old wheeze about love and cards be paraphrased to read lucky in election, unlucky in football? GB Coach Grades Blockers After Game: Bill Austin, line fcoach of the Packers, grades each blocker on his performance and posts the results for all to see each week. Each position hs,», itc standards, both on runs and (pass blocking, and players who exceed the percentage are duly nipted as those winning blocking awards. Sometimes a player may disagree with the coach’s verdict and go through the film himself, checking his performance on each play. Then he checks his score against the coach’s. This, however, doe« not reverse the official decision!. It merely shows how much a good perform arce means. No VP Votes for Maris Roger Maris, the A m er i c a n League’s Most Valuable Player in 1960 in ’61, did not receive a vote this year. He was not named on any of the ballots. A year ago, he beat out Mickey Mantle by four points for the honor after hitting 61 home runs. Norm Cach of Detroit, a strong contender for the horor a year ago, was named on one ballot for a total of three points, or 231 fewer points than Mantle received. THE MAINSPRING The vital role that profit plays in keeping this country going has been summed up in one memorable phrase; “No profits equals no capital equals no tools equals no jobs.” It costs something like $20,000 to provide the “tools” which are needed for just one job in American industry. In some industries the figure goes as high as $50,000. The investments are made because the investors have a hope of profit. And a very large part of the profits earned by representative industry are not distributed to the owners, but are ploughed back into the business for purposes of expansion and improvement. In recent years, profits have lagged far behind all the other economic yardsticks—behind costs, wages, output. In 1961 total profits were only slightly higher than in 1950—whereas, by way of comparison, payroll costs had risen 96 per cent. And this, beyond question, is a prime cause of the unemployment problem, and of tlhe economic lethargy which has been causing so much concern the country over. To sum up, profit is the mainspring that drives the economy. The spring needs rewinding. John A. Fakult, Councilman of Ward 32, has been appointed Commissioner of Light and Power, by Mayor Ralph S. Locher. He succeeds Vincent M. DeMelto, who is the new director of utilities. Fakult, who was the first councilman. to back Locher for mayor, will remain in City Council till about January 1st. At every annual meeting we must elect a board according to KSKJ by-laws to perform their duties for the coming year 1963. They will work for the benefit of our society and the future of KSKJ. At this meeting the reports of the 25th General Convention of KSKJ will be given. At the September 1962 meeting I was prepared to give all our members the report on what had happened and was passed at our Convention, but I could net because there was no attendance. At our Convention there were two new classes added to our Operation and Disability funds. As soon as I receive the report on amounts for same from the Supreme Secretary of KSKJ, every member will be notified to change over if he or she so wishes. In the last few months I have received calls concerning the members’ Operation Claims which were rejected by our Supreme Medical Examiner. It is not the fault of KSKJ. It is your fault because you did not transfer to other classes as you were given a free choice to do so. On Sunday, Dec. 16, 1962, our society will sponsor a Christmas Party for the Juvenile members of our society. At this time I wish to ask all members who are in arrears with their monthly assessments to pay up by Dec. 22, 1962 so that I can complete our annual report for 1962. Hanson Blatz, director of the department’s Office of Radiation Control, said young boys especially should not carry pocket watches. He said some of the watches examined by the Board of Health give off 75 units of radiation a year. This is 150 times greater than the one-half unit of radiation per year .■which is considered a permissible and safe amount. Important Notice To At! Lodges and Clubs Many local and out of town clubs and lodges run a regular monthly ad in our newspaper containing all such information as: Names of officers, time and place of meetings, etc. This lodge roster is published once or twice a month. The price is $12 per year, which is low considering the service it renders your group. Lodges which run such ads usually get free publicity announcing their meetings and other similar short notices. Yearly meetings are usually held during December. We suggest that all lodges and dubs vote for this monthly ad. Macek J QURVEY OF ACTIVITIES, COM-•o MITTEE ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS. As I have told you many times, the Committee system is the key to our method of enacting laws. After introduction of a bill the Speaker of the House refers it to the Committee which has jurisdiction over the subject matter. It is then up to the Committee Chairman to decide which of the bills will be brought up for consideration. In a vast majority of cases the Congress votes as the responsible Committees recommend. Since every member of the House and Senate is assigned to some Committee, he knows that only by long and careful consideration of a bill can one know its worth. The Congress does on occasions over-ride the recommendations of its Committees and this action receives much public attention. But such cases are rare indeed. My assignment since January 16, 1941, has been on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. Bills and resolutions referred to this Committee during the 87th Congress cover a wide range of critical world problems and many aspects of U. S. foreign relations. Included among the subjects receiving consideration by the Committee were: Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 and 1962, Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act of 1961, Peace Corps Act, Arms Control and Disarmament Act, Establishment of the Caribbean Organization, Continuing the authority of the President to utilize surplus agricultural commodities to assist needy peoples and to promote economic development in underdeveloped areas of the world, Planning U. S. participation in the New York World’s Fair, Payment of the balance of awards under the Philippine Rehabilitation Act, Amending the Foreign Service Buildings Act to authorize additional appropriations, and Expressing the sense of Congress on Cuba and Berlin. All-in-all 694 bills and resolutions were referred to us. We favorably reported 29 and 27 of these were acted on by the House. In the course of our consideration of these bills and resolutions we had 209 meetings, sitting for a total of 263 hours. This was in addition to the work on the various subcommittees, many of which are very active. There are 9 standing subcommittees: Far East and the Pacific, National Security and Scientific Developments Affecting Foreign Policy, Europe, State Department Organization and Foreign Operations, Inter-American Affairs, Foreign Economic Policy, Africa, Near East, and International Organizations and Movements. In addition, there is a Special Subcommittee for Review of the Mutual Security Programs. (As you know, my subcommittees have been Africa and State Department Organization and Foreign Operations. In the next Congress, as the ranking Minority member, I will be an ex officio member of all standing subcommittees.) The Committee heard 491 witnesses and their testimony, together with questions and discussions of Committee members, filled 6,057 printed pages. Our reports on bills, investigations, etc., filled an additional 1,615 pages. Besides the various bills introduced by members of Congress, some 67 messages from the President and other executive communications were referred to the Committee for consideration. In connection with hearings, witnesses usually present oral statements without interruption, questioning by Committee members tak-ing place afterward, each member being called in turn by the Chairman. Back in the 80th Congress we inaugurated the 5-mlnute rule for questioning witnesses. The rule provides that each Committee member alternating from majority to minority side, may interrogate a witness for a 5-minute interval. The witness' reply is included in the 5-minute period. After all Committee members have interrogated, the round begins again, if members have further questions. The purpose of the rule is to insure equal division of time for interrogation of witnesses by all members. The figures I have given you concerning the work of my own Committee are by no means unique. Many Committees could quote higher numbers for any category. But I have always felt that a certain unity of purpose has distinguished the Foreign Affairs Committee. Each of us has an opinion on how our foreign policy legislation should be written and many of us have a good deal of experience to support these opinions. Yet we find among us far more areas of agreement than disagreement—because fundamentally 'every member is devoted to the -best interests of this great land of ours. “Top For Tots” The 1962 “Toys for Tots” campaign of the Cleveland Marine Corps Reservists, the Community' Christmas Committee of the Welfare Federation; the Volunteers of America; the Kiwanis Clubs of Greater Cleveland and the Shell Oil Company began on Monday, November 26th and continue thru December 13th. It was announced by Lt. Col. Robert F. De Meter, Commanding Officer of the 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines, USMCR. The purpose of the annual campaign, the 11th conducted by Marine Reservists here, is to make sure Christmas gifts of toys will bs provided 35,000 less fortunate children in the Cleveland area, whose parents are on relief. Lt. Col. De Meter said donations of new toys or toys in good condition are urgently needed. He said contributions of toys could be made by taking the toys to the nearest Shell Service Station, in Cuyahoga County, and depositing them in cardboard barells provided for that purpose. He pointed out that Retail and Wholesale stores wishing to donate large amounts of toys could arrange for a store pick-up by calling the Marine Corps Reserve Training Center, 781-5541. Lt. Col. De Meter urged all school, church and civic groups to organize toy drives among their memberships, adding that the Marines would be glad to pick up these donations at any time. “All toys collected in the Cleveland Area will be distributed here”, Lt. Col. De Meter said. “Although Toys for Tots is a nationwide Christmas project of the Marine Corps Reserve, each campaign is purely a local project”. He said that the Kiwanis Clubs of Cleveland will collect toys at meetings, help provide publicity, and place posters ip. downtown business windows, plus aiding in the distribution of toys. Distribution of toys will be made through the Community Christmas Committee of the Welfare Federation and the Volunteers of America. The Welfare Federation and the Volunteers of America will issue certificates to the needy families. Distribution of toys in return for the certificates, will be made at the May Company, Taylor Building Arcade at 631 Prospect Avenue by the Marines, Kiwanis and the Shell Oil Company on December 15 th. The Shell Oil Company will make their Service Stations available as collection centers of donated toys from November 20th through December 13th. Cleveland’s 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines, USMCR, will pick up toys at Shell Oil Stations, paint, repair, and ready the toys for distribution. “Toys for Tots” was started by the Marine Corps Reserve Units on the west coast in 1947”, Lt. Col. Kick-Off Nov. 26th De Meter explained. Since that time, he said, the idea has spread throughout the country; now, millions of toys are distributed each year to children who might otherwise fail to receive Christmas gifts. This Ypar. U.S. Marine Corps Re-seryi-vlfrfits in over 200 cities in. 46 of the 50 states, including Hawaii, will be conducting “Toys for Tots” campaigns. ■ " -O ■ " - io# Scoi'f Good Turn Bay Thousands of Boy Scouts this weekend will launch the first phase of their annual Good Turn For Goodwill. They’ll visit Greater Cleveland homes to pave the way for the big day—Good Turn Day— Saturday, December 1st. Their mission this weekend is to explain to householders why they are seeking help for Goodwill Industries, workshop for the handicapped. The boys will ask for donations of clothing and toys which they will pick up on. Good Turn Day. When the boys return on their rounds, one week from now, they’ll bring large brown paper Good Turn bags, which they hope to fill to the brim. It takes two full bags to provide one hour’s work and wages for a handicapped man or woman at the Goodwill workshop. This weekend the boys will canvass all homes in. their neighborhoods. On Good Turn Day, the boys will stop only at those homes where a scarf is tied to a doorknob. In terms of the total Scout and community effort, this 30th annual Good Turn For Goodwill will be a massive undertaking, one that gives major assistance to Goodwill Industries. Last year over 5,000 Scouts collected a grand total of more than 100 tons of clothing and toys. Clothing and toys collected are taken to the Goodwill workshop to be renovated and prepared for sale by the agency’s physically and mentally handicapped workers. The items are sold in the seven Goodwill stores to produce the income which pays workers wages. Chalmer F. Lutz, Goodwill president, calls Good Turn Day the most important boost his agency has received over the years. “There have been many years When the Scouts have literally kept the wolf from our door,” he says. “During the winter, Goodwill truck calls drop off because of the cold.” Nofw, Mr. Lutz points out, Good Turn Day is more important than ever. Goodwill cannot stand still— it must serve more clients. In 1961, Goodwill served 421 clients, paying a total of $225,029 in opportunity wages to clients. Although such a record is impressive, the need is great. A recent study of the Cleveland area shows that Goodwill should be serving twice the number of clients currently receiving work and train- ing services. Goodwill will do this—if it can obtain enough donations of clothing ,toys, and other household goods that are its mainstay. -------o------ Applicants Sought For Coast Guard Officer Candidate School WASHINGTON, D. The basic cereal and rnilk breakfast pattern includes the basic foods—fruit, cereal, milk, bread, and butter. A breakfast of V* cup orange juice; 1 ounce of cereal, dry weight, and Vi cup whole milk with 1 teaspoon sugar; 2 slices enriched bread with 1 teaspoon butter or margarine, and 1 cup whole milk to drink, is a well-balanced adequate breakfast. This means it provides about 14 the daily caloric requirement and protein allowance for most people. For those whose energy needs are higher, this modern breakfast may be supplemented with other foods. For those who require less calories, in a weight reduction diet, 1 cup of nonfat milk can be substituted for the whole milk. 2. Nation-wide surveys as well as interviews with nutrition and educational leaders indicate that one of the main reasons why so many children and workers fail to have breakfast is because they do not have lime for it. Give yourself time. 15 minutes. Get up fifteen minutes earlier than usual and you will have plenty of time to eat the cereal and milk breakfast. 3.
