Kostanjevica in Nova Gorica At the very mouth of the Vipava valley, where the wide Friuli plain narrows and the mountain range with Caven and Nanos and beyond them the karst plateau can be felt, the Church of the Annunciation and the Franciscan monastery attached to it rise from a 450 foot high hill. In the midst of the city bustle, just above the Slovene-Italian border on Kostanjevica hill, or “Kapela,” as they call it here, is an ancient pilgrimage sanctuary with a colorful history and rich treasures of the past. For the citizens of Nova Gorica and of Gorizia across the border in Italy, it is an oasis of green, peace, and spirituality. A visit to Kostanjevica today offers a many-sided encounter, as it combines at least three kinds of cultural and spiritual experiences: a monument of sacred art and a spiritual center (the church and the monastery), a historical monument (the tomb of the Bourbons), and a cultural monument (the monastery library). The Franciscan fathers have been caring for all three for 180 years. The Church Along with the legends about the origin of the church is the historical fact that in 1623 Count Matija Thurn had a small church built on his property where he placed a painting of Mary, before which people gathered to pray. Along with the church he established a small monastery. Among the first caretakers of the church and the monastery were the Carmelites, who over 134 years enlarged and embellished both buildings. In the midst of Kostanjevica’s rich flourishing came the decree of Austrian Emperor Joseph II in 1781 that banished the Carmelites from Kostanjevica. They left practically nothing behind them. For nine years the church and the monastery were closed. Later, in 1811, Kostanjevica was handed over to the Slovene Franciscans, who still manage it today. Destroyed during World War I, the church was renovated between 1924 and 1929 and its previous beauty revived with rich stucco works. The central place in the marble altar is taken by the painting of Mary with Jesus in a gold frame with sun beams. The fresco of Mary the Comforter, called the “Kostanjevica Mary” was painted by Leo- nardo Rigo. The Coronation of Mary painted on the nave ceiling is a work by Giovanni Moro from Friulia in northeastern Italy. The many tombstones that reflect the attachment of the faithful to this site, in particular the aristocracy of Gorizia, are a special feature of the Kostanjevica church. Tomb of the Bourbons A visitor to Kostanjevica must not forget to visit the tomb where the last descendants of the royal French Bourbon family are buried. The July Revolution of 1830 banished them from France, and they found refuge in Gorizia with Count Coronini. Their wish was to be buried in Kostanjevica, and thus today this site is famous worldwide as the “Little St. Denis.” Six members of the Bourbon family rest in the crypt under the church: Charles X (1757—1836). Crowned in 1821, he was an arbitrary ruler and in many ways hastened the July Revolution in 1830. After abdicating the throne, he wandered all over Europe; at first he took refuge in Edinburgh, from there he went to Prague, and finally he came to the “Austrian Nice.” Here he was welcomed by Count Coronini but died from cholera seventeen days later. Louis XIX, Duke of Angou-leme (1775—1844), the oldest son of Charles X, died in Gorizia in the palace of the Counts of Strassoldo. His wife Maria Theresa Charlotte, Duchess of Angou-leme (1778—1851), daughter of Louis XVI and Marie An- • • • toinette, the daughter of the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa. Henry V, Count of Cham-bord (1820—1883), son of Charles Ferdinand and grandson of Charles X, was the last member of the French Bourbons. Louise Maria Theresa, Duchess of Parma (1819— 1864). After the violent death of her husband Charles III, Duke of Parma, she ruled as regent in place of her minor son. Marie Theresa Beatrice Gae-tana, Archduchess of Austria-Este (1817—1886), wife of Henry V. It is largely to her credit that the members of the Bourbon family are gathered in one place. In a niche in front of the tomb of the Bourbons is buried Louis Jean Casimir, Duke of Blacas, Marquis d’Aulps (1771—1839), a court minister , under Charles X who followed him into exile. In Gorizia, he acquired estates in Št. Maver in Italy and Kanal in Slovenia. (Continued on page 2) Upper Photo: The tombs of the French Bourbons in the1 monastery at Kostanjevica. All Invited to Ohio KSKJ Day No. 25 June 24, 2004 Ken, left, and Tom, the Malenšek brothers Will Miss Malensek’s by RUDY FLIS Well, it is with great sadness that I eliminate Bonna and Norwood Avenues from my itinerary. Klobase, želodec, rice and blood sausage flowed liberally from that location, formally known as Malensek’s Meat Market. My car carried hundreds of pounds of smoked klobase to such places as Butler, PA, Lancaster, Heath, Columbus, Akron, Warren, Barberton, and Norton, Ohio. Upland, Calif., home of my brother Tony is another location I carried goodies from Malensek’s. Most are customers of mine who just loved the taste of a Slovenian smoked klobasa and always appreciated my special delivery to them. I’ll miss Ken and Tom Malenšek, the ones who each day blended meat and spices and in their old-fashioned smokehouse gave me and my family, plus friends and customers the tasty morsel we call “klobasa.” Thanks Ken and Tom. In a perfect world, you two would always be there for me, to en joy what you two do so well. As you leave, know that Malensek’s smoked Slovenian Klobasa was enjoyed to the last. Pictured are the two masters of Slovenian klobasa. Ken and Tom Malenšek. They are wearing nice smiles, just hours before they close the door to their store. I was there that last day to pick up their tasty klobasa just one last time, and to have the two brothers autograph their pictures shown in an article about their retirement, which appeared in the Cleveland Plain Dealer on Saturday, June 19 in the Metro section. So that Ken and Tom know the last day of their work was appreciated, I have a picture of my sons Mike and Marty doing what they like doing best, eating that tasty smoked klobasa from Malensek’s. Their cousin Steve looks kind of happy to me, as he partakes in the consumption of the last of that tasty morsel from Malensek’s Meat Market. Good luck Ken and Tom. Don’t let the smoke get in your eyes. The 53rd annual Ohio KSKJ Day Picnic will be held on Sunday, June 27, from 12 noon to 8 p.m., at Slovenska Pristava Slovenian Recreation Center in Harpersfield, Ohio. Admission and parking are free. DIRECTIONS: From Cleveland, take Route 1-90 East to the Geneva Exit, State Route 534. Take Route 534 South for approximately 2 miles to South River Road. Proceed on South River Road for approximately 1 mile to Brandt Road. Brandt Road is the first street you will see while traveling on South River Road. It is easy to miss the street if you are not paying attention. Turn right on Brandt Road and proceed to Slovenska Pristava. The picnic area is a little over a half-mile down Brandt Road. You will have to make a right turn from Brandt to enter the picnic area. --Joseph V. Hočevar Ohio Federation President vica monastery. About 5 inches of snow fell last night. At 8 a.m., I went to Mass. At 2 p.m., we had a special New Year’s dinner: soup, potatoes, pork, cider and a little red wine. I know it is not doing the garden any good unless you have a rice paddy in which case it should be in full harvest. Seems like whenever there is a letup, we are all out there cutting the grass. At this time I guess we can all use either a couple of cows in the backyard or lambs to keep the grass mowed. Fortunately, due to health, I have the grass cut. But I still have to get out there to pull the weeds and at times I think someone comes at night and plants a new crop. Well, let’s get back to the Reserve Center and it so happened that in the 1970s most unfortunately, both of my sisters went into the hospital and my Aunt Ursula, all at the same time. My oldest sister was at a hospital in Warrensville Heights and my younger sister was at Parma in traction and most unfortunately, my Aunt Ursula was in Lutheran Hospital on Franklin. I felt it was no more than right that after work I went to each hospital, first to Warrensville Hts. to visit my oldest sister, and then shoot over to Franklin Avenue to see Ursula. What can I say about Ursula. She had Dr. Cortner as her doctor and those of us from the west side who recall Doctor Cortner knew that once he had a patient, he would not turn them loose, but all in all he was a good doctor and one of the few that made house calls. When I first went to see Ursula, the first thing she made me aware of was that “They cannot cook here.” She was not on a restricted diet but she always felt that unless something was fried in butter, it was no good. In any case, she said, “Tomorrow when you come to visit me, be sure to bring me a cold beer.” What? “You heard me, a cold beer. Dr. Cortner says I can have anything I want.” I was startled and figured that maybe the doctor felt that in her condition, don’t deny her anything. From visiting her, I would shoot out to Parma Hospital to visit my younger sister who had a bad time in traction which is no fun either. It was generally after 7 p.m., by time' I got home and Ma would be holding supper for me. For better than a week when I went to see Ursula, I took her the cold can of beer. Unfortunately, the one night the nurse came into the room but, but,” Aunt Ursula stammers. No buts, I said your beer drinking days are over. Beer is bad for anybody and above all bad for you in your age bracket. The doctor says, “Pack up the beer and take it home and don’t buy her any more.” Before he left he said he will be back next week. I packed up the beer, but Ursula had a mind of her own for it seems as sure as God made green apples, the following week when I went to visit her, the sink counter was full of empty beer bottles again. Hey, Ursula, where did you get the beer? I knew you could not bring it, so I got the neighbor to get it for me. Again, I packed up the beer, took it home and made a point of seeing the neighbors on each side and told them that under no circumstances will they bring her any more beer. She always tried to stay a few steps ahead of me and although I did not see any beer bottles around. But, she told the neighbors to take the bottles back to their house when she was finished. However, I noticed the beer caps in the waste basket. I'knew I was fighting a losing battle, but then at her age, why should I nag her about it. I really had my hands full with her for she had a mind of her own and Ray could not tell her what to do. Maybe she felt her time was coming to an end for she said she wanted to see my sisters and me next week and wanted to talk about the future. Well, she wanted to appoint my sister as her executor to her estate. But unfortunately, neither one of my sisters felt they wanted that responsibility, and so Ray got stuck again. Although my aunt and I got along, it seemed that she fought me every inch of the way. Well, space is running out and I will have to continue in the next issue with Ursula, but before I close, time for jokes. At this stage, I need a joke to keep my sanity. I know that now and then the various priests like to tell a good joke in his homily and so I am going to help them out. Are you ready, Fathers? Notice in church bulletin: “Ladies Bible Study will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. All ladies will then be invited to the “Fellowship Hall after the BS is done.” and seen me pouring the cold beer for Ursula, she said, “Pray tell, just what are you doing?” “Bringing her the beer each night for she said the doctor told her she can now have anything that she desires.” “Oh my gosh,” she says, “I am sorry I asked. I didn’t think your aunt was falling that fast.” After a little better than a week there one night I ran into Doctor Cortner and he says, “Are you the nephew looking after your aunt?” Yep I said, that’s me. “Well, I plan to release her tomorrow to go home; she is too old for an operation. I will meet you here tomorrow and I expect to get paid in cold cash before I release her. I said, Wait, she has Medicare; they will pay you.” Oh, no. I ain’t waiting for Medicare, you pay me and then you can come to my office weeks later and we will make out the papers so you can get your money back. I didn’t like the idea, but who am I to argue with Dr. Cortner. The next day, I took emergency leave from my work, went to the bank and got his so-called cold cash and took my aunt home. He said he would be out every week to insure she is all right. Unfortunately, when I got Ursula home, the first instruction from her was to get her a full case of beer and make room in the ice box for her beer. What can I say, “Dr. Cortner says she can have anything she wants.” Like a dummy I got her the beer and it was just my luck that the following week I happened to be there when the doctor arrived to check up on her. As I let him in, he says, “I have to wash my hands.” I said the bathroom is upstairs. No he said. I’ll use the sink in the kitchen. Okay, be my guest. He comes out of the kitchen and in the living room where my aunt and I were waiting for him and he looks at me and says, “Son you have a drinking problem.” “What?” I said. He said there are eight empty bottles of beer sitting on your kitchen couflfcr. Hey wait a minute, Doc, those aren’t mine, they are my aunt's. What? Why are you giving her beer? V/ait a minute, I have been bringing her beer ever since she was in the hospital. She said you told her she can have anything she wants. He looked at Ursula and says, No more. Your beer drinking days are over. “But, Letter to St. Vitus Parishioners, Friends Dear Parishioners, Friends, and Benefactors of St. Vitus Parish: On April 25, 2004 a presentation was made to parishioners, friends and benefactors regarding the complete repair of the parish church and rectory roofs and other maintenance work that needs to be completed. You are able to examine the details of this work in the enclosed brochure. On behalf of both parish pastoral and finance advisory councils I am asking for your support for this major parish project. Both church and rectory roofs are the original roofs and nearly 73 vears-old. The ongoing maintenance performed on these roofs has been exhausted. Both roofs need to be completely repaired. The projected cost for this work is $865,000. The church roof portion cost is estimated at $665,000. The remaining $200,000 is for other maintenance work. This includes replacement of old exterior window covers, masonry and brick work, paint work on exterior wooden frames and cleaning of exterior church structure. As I stated at the presentation, nearly 60% of this cost will be paid by interest monies from the parish endowment trust, this year’s net proceeds of bingo, and a lead gift from the estate of a parishioner. I am asking you to provide support for only the remaining 40% of the project cost. You have responded well to past major parish projects. I believe you will respond to this request. The parish is fortunate to be allowed to use interest monies from the parish endowment trust. A bequeath from late Mr. Edward L. Mihevic Sr. provided the major resource so that we may now be able to approach this major parish project. To date, 1 am pleased to inform you that $80,000 has already been raised for this purpose. A “giving form” is enclosed to assist you in this personal decision on how to best support this project. I ask you to pray daily for all the workers involved in this complex and difficult work-God has been good to us: there have not been any accidents to date! I wish to close this letter by personally thanking you for taking the time to read and support this request. The roof and maintenance project is scheduled to be completed in 2005. God bless! Not just a measly narrow stripe around the sidewall, but a white sidewall from tread to head. But, just a little scrape against the curb, and the whitewall was never the same. Nasty curbs. Some bright person invented ‘curb feelers,’ a stiff spring protruding from a bracket clipped to the bottom edge of the fender. Designed to touch (feel) the curb before the tire did, it vibrated a warning noise amplified through the sheet metal of the car. If you were parking carefully and slowly, the noise reached your ears before the tire rubbed the curb. “Back off dummy,” it was saying, and if you listened and reacted quickly, they forked, that is, unless some kids hadn’t kicked this ‘sissy’ gadget out of position the last time you parked. I believe it was Ovaltine that offered, either free or as a low-cost premium, a man-ual ‘milk shake machine.’ It Was a light metal container, shaped like those used at soda fountains on an electric mixer, and had a device with a metal plunger that looked bke the bell on an old door buzzer. You dropped this into the Ovaltine and milk, and worked it up and down. The foamy drink almost tasted like a chocolate shake... Almost. Why anyone thought it Was useful to have a Permanent’ matchstick, I don't know, but we had one and used it, at least occasionally. A metal can, about twice as tall as a can of tuna, bad a tiny knob protruding from a hole in its top. A 9uick pull on the knob and Vou had a steel ‘match’ that looked like the key for a big Can of sardines. Striking it °n a gray metal strip on the side of the can, the magic ^ctal match flamed at its tip. kolike wooden kitchen batches, the flame didn’t £reep toward your fingers, °ut burned only at the tip. that was good, but the flame °nly lasted a few seconds. ^ant more? Stick it back in *be hole and repeat the proems- I’m not sure how it forked because the can was sealed, but from the volatile Srncll emitting from the hole ln the top, I’ll venture a ^oss. The fuzzy bit on the llP of the match was asbes-0^> and the can was packed jib cotton gauze saturated flammable liquid. The asbestos tip absorbed enough Moisture to ignite from the Tark made by striking it on JiL llc metal strip. The knob on the match sealed the can and prevented evaporation of the fumes. What do you think? Do you remember the electric com poppers that were so popular in the late 1970s? The diet craze. No oil, no butter, no salt - yuck. Styrofoam popcorn. We had one in the 1930s - it wasn’t as simple to use, but the popcorn tasted just as bad. Picture a very large fly swatter and instead of a little square of screening to whack the flies, there’s a wire framed box covered with metal screening. The box is shaped like a large breadbaking pan with a sliding lid. The popcorn goes inside, with a firm grip on the handle, the box is shaken and waved over the open flames of a gas burner on the stove. The modem version was better because it worked with moist heat and popped most of the kernels, unlike the old version that burned half and popped half. Neither of them made good popcorn. Same principle, but even smaller than a fly swatter, was our Soap Saver. You know those slivers of soap that remain when a bar has been used down to its last gasp? A thing of the past. As soon as the bar becomes awkward to hold, the remaining oval share goes right into the trash and a new bar is unboxed. But when we had the S.S., the slivers were collected and used until they disappeared. Made from heavy galvanized mesh, a hinged box about three inches square and an inch or so deep, was on the end of a short firm handle. All soap slivers went inside and every last molecule was used. Gripping and dipping the S.S. in a basin or laundry tub of hot water, a vigorous shaking and swishing action produced nice soapy water. Frugal, frugal. Our final gadget contradicts our title. A jar opener was useful 50 years ago, and in an improved reincarnation, it still is. The intervening decades of ‘progress’ gave birth to a bevy of ‘new and improved’ designs, most of them using the same tired principle of a slip-proof grip on the lid and/or the use of both hands to turn the jar. These appear in catalogs that clutter our mailboxes, but for many of us, they require more strength than we have. Unscrewing the lid from a vacuum-packed jar of pickles or jam, etc., was a major challenge until I saw a tool of elegant simplicity being used in someone’s kitchen. We were visiting back in Cleveland and staying at my sister-in-law’s house. I saw a flat metal gadget blackened with age and small enough to disappear when clasped in her hand. She touched it to the top of a new jar of pickles and made a slight twist of her wrist. I heard “pfsst” and “pook,” and then she unscrewed the lid with her hand and without effort. “Where’d you get that thing?” I asked. “I’m not sure, but it’s been around ever since I can remember. I think Gerber used to give them away with their baby food jars.” She showed me how it worked by sticking a little tab into the space between the kid and the thick ridge of glass that circles the jar. “A twist releases the vacuum and pops the center of the lid - then it’s easy.” For a long time, my wife and I asked for this item whenever we were in a store that might have kitchen gadgets, only to be met by blank looks and showed other devices that opened jars. Everything from a simple rubber disc that gives your hand a better grip on the lid, to something that screwed to the underside of a cupboard, to a recent electrical appliance - insert the jar and flick a switch. C’mon, do we need another appliance taking up space on the counter just to open jars? And, it’s much bigger than an electric can-opener, an essential for arthritic hands. Then one day, along with a birthday gift from my daughter in Chicago, there was an added little bonus molded of some sturdy hi-tech plastic. At first glance it looked like a ‘new age’ beer bottle opener. Then I noticed the words ‘JarKey’ and ‘Made in Denmark’ molded in the plastic and hard to read. A bar coded sticker had a trademarked name, ‘JarPop.’ This was a modem version of the Gerber jar popper, and made of plastic, much safer to use on a glass jar. I tested it on a jar at once, and it worked like a charm. If, God forbid, the house ever catches fire, it will be one of the first things I grab on the way out. My wife, Pat, says she’s seen them recently in upscale kitchen supply stores for about five bucks - a bargain, and a perfect example of “build a better house-trap.” (p.s. - I used to be more useful, too). Vavpetič, Jr., at the Funeral Mass of Blaž Vavpetič at Saint Patrick’s Church in Thompson, Ohio on Tuesday, June 8, 2004. Hallo! (There is no other way to begin a speech about Grandpa than by using this one word. It’s the one thing he said to everyone of us upon every meeting.) Today, we mourn and celebrate the first passing of a Vavpetič on American soil. That’s an amazing statistic considering we’ve been here since 1950. I’d like to paint a picture of a man, or rather, a patriarch, based on the stories I’ve heard from many of you and from my own experiences with Blaž Vavpetič. Blaz was a modem day renaissance man, fitting so much into his 89 years with us. But what made Blaz such a great man? What made his life such a good one? Everyone here has their own stories and experiences that defined their views of him, but ultimately there was no one defining characteristic, no one big moment, and no major undertaking that neatly classified him. All in all, it was the sum of “leetle beets” - the day-to-day actions - that made Blaz the unique “sonamagun” we will always remember so lovingly. Knowledge of nature, agricultural prowess, love of music, inventiveness, competitiveness, jack of all trades, productivity, social skills, economics, religion, morality, physical aptitude; all of these traits combined with an amazing array of diverse occupations and experiences are what made Blaz a renaissance man. Something he used to say quite often was “I know” no matter what you said about any given subject, but considering the breadth of experience he had in his life, he probably DID know. Physically, Blaz was almost a perfect specimen. In today’s lingo, you could say he was ripped - hard, muscular, and lean - albeit a “leetle” on the short side... but anybody who messed with him quickly learned that size didn’t matter. He remained this way until his early 80s when most of us these days can barely keep the fat off much past our early 30s. Bom in the middle of WWI, he had dazzling blue eyes with a playful twinkle and a full head of red hair. He was left handed, with hands like bear paws. He loved to wear baseball caps slightly crooked, and had a peculiar habit of hitching up his pants with the palms of his hands. And his hands were never still... even when sitting at the kitchen table (in HIS chair, of course), he was always lining up his placement or precisely positioning a glass or ashtray on the table. He could never sit still... except of course when watching TV - MacGyver, Hunter, and Wheel of Fortune were some of his all time classic favorites. And God help anyone who changed the channel on him. Actually, TV was about the only thing that could distract him from his extremely active social life. If you happened to pay him a visit while MacGyver was on, he would continue to watch it all the way from the kitchen while continuing to talk with you. Blaz was, to use another of his sayings, “strong like bull, smart like chicken.” Although he only had the equivalent of a fourth grade education, he learned so many things from others and taught himself the rest. He was a woodsman, a chimney sweep (employed by Grandma’s father), a cooper (someone who could make barrels, for wine or beer) at Union Brewery in Slovenia, an elite mountain trooper in the Slovenian army, a pretty good ski jumper, loved to play soccer (in later life some of us experienced his infamous drop kick in the behind when we did something wrong - which could lift you clear off the ground and deposit you a few yards away), taught himself to play the accordion (even though he couldn’t read a note of music), a singer (who could make tears come to anyone’s eyes because he put so much emotion into his songs), a great dancer (although he twirled the wrong way because he was left handed), a farmer, carpenter, machinist, bee-keeper, butcher, mechanic, vintner, salesman (selling eggs, vegetables, fruit, and various “beverages” which shall go unnamed), and an avid gamesman (bocce, pinochle, rummy, chess, and of course lottery tickets). And he always kept himself informed about the world around him by reading the newspaper religiously. He would read the paper at night, out loud, one word at a time, in English - his second language. Speaking of languages, Blaz also had at least a working knowledge of six other languages besides Slovenian and English... not bad for a country boy from Kamnik. Afraid of nothing, he let fate take him and generally went with the flow. Blaz was not afraid to express his emotions, whether it be laughing or crying... and he did a lot of both. He always wore his youthful heart on his sleeve. In fact, the only thing he truly feared was leaving Grandma alone. Blaz saved everything - a virtue of the “waste not, want not” mentality bom out of the hard times in the old country. Everything went to good use - even the run-off from pigpens and chicken manure, which the boys had to spread on the fields. The only thing that could prevent him from saving something was if it threatened one of his family... like the time Kristy fell into the liquid manure container behind the barn one year. After many baths to get rid of the stench, Grandma ordered the container to be filled in. Blaz was very competitive - and didn’t like to lose. Here are some of his favorite games: Bocce ball (balince) and bringing out the belts to measure. Chess and breaking a board and throwing it into the fire, Playing rummy with his grandchildren and never letting them cheat, Pinochle and the thrill he had getting the best hand possible (a double run AND double pinochle - 180 points for those who know the game). BUT, he wasn’t a gambler. He couldn’t hide his excitement when he had a good hand (his hands would shake). He had no poker face, could never lie - he had no guile. And while this sometimes angered his partner (especially Stric Tony and Uncle Nick), it served him well in life. He was an . honest man. BUT, that’s not to say he couldn’t be a “leetle beet” sneaky when he wanted to be. Aunt Kathy relayed the story of how Grandpa kept his slivovitz in the cupboard with a squeaky door. He would often try to sneak a “leetle beet” during breaks from work. When someone in another part of the house heard the cabinet door squeak, they knew what he was up to. He also had a serious sweet tooth and liked to sneak chocolate from the drawer at night. And with his grandchildren, he was playfully sneaky. Little Tina remembered how she would sit on Grandpa’s lap. Grandma would tell Ata not to give her any of the wine he was drinking, but as soon as Grandma tupied her back, Grandpa gave her a “leetle beet.” Grandpa was probably the source of many of our first drinks. He was also a very clever man. The story of how he schemed to meet Grandma illustrates this. Convincing his boss (who was her father) to allow him to give Grandma accordion lessons, which gave him the opportunity to woo her. Grandpa was relentless when he wanted something and had a drive that just wouldn’t quit. He could do anything he set his mind to. Whether it was work or play, Blaz had unbelievable stamina. And boy, did he like celebrations. Anything could be turned into a celebration, really. All it took was a “leetle beet.” Here are some examples of the many events connected with Blaz: Sundays were always an event. He would play the accordion and people would even dance. There were always people at the house on Sundays - they came in waves. Grandpa, Stric Tony, Philip Oreh, Frank Ferkulj -they were more like brothers than simply friends. They would talk about the war and their lost youth. The Domobranci was such a source of pride for them - representing their youth, prime, and closest friendships. Butchering pigs was an event. Picking grapes, pressing them, and tasting the fresh juice was an event. Going down into the cellar to try the latest batch of wine was an event, more like a rite, as was drinking out of the darkly stained glass that had probably never been washed. It was a real science experiment. But a little bit of dirt never hurt anydne - talk about becoming one with nature. But drinking out of that glass made you feel a bit more like Grandpa... you weren’t scared of anything. Picking up day-old bread was an event, especially for the grandkids who gorged themselves on donuts and pies until they were sick. His infamous day-long trips to Cleveland to visit friends and sell the family’s produce were collections of mini-events in and of themselves. Grandma would worry (i.e., get angry at him) when he would get home late from these trips. He told her he just had one drink... But we all knew it was one drink at EACH stop along the way. Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, Birthday parties, Baptisms, Communions, Confirmations, and of course, weddings were major celebrations. And the button box was always out. In fact, the featured event of all of our weddings was Grandpa playing his accordion. And he played at every one until last week. Even taking the kids around in the Blaz-Mobile was an event. Hopefully it is something they will always remember. Family, religion, and celebrations all went hand in hand. Blaz loved God, his family, and his friends so much... and he always made attempts to teach Slovenian culture to his family - he wanted you to know where vou came from. Interplay of religion and nature was a constant in Blaz’s life. He had sayings, most memorable to me was at the time of my wedding when he told Kate and me that “Marriage is like a cross with honey on it... Don’t lick off the honey too quickly or you’ll just be left with the cross. I know, sonamagun.” (And of course, Grandma gave him a punch on the shoulder.) If one part of family life was celebration, another equal part was hard work and strict discipline. That •cross had no honey on it-Blaz expected you to work hard, and if you didn’t (or if you argued with him), he didn’t spare the rod by any stretch of the imagination, but kept it ready at hand and well polished through vigorous use. Saying he was a very stem disciplinarian with his own children is probably a bit of an understatement. But he had high standards for his kids and dealt punishments quickly and decisively. While I’m sure the experiences of those who met Grandpa’s justice firsthand were pretty scary at the time, they sure do make for good stories with the passage of time. Here are three more stories among many that illustrate Grandpa’s discipl*' nary philosophy: • Aunt Mary, Uncle Joe. Rudy, and Uncle Nick anC* the cigarette butts. Grandp3 and Stric Tony got very creative with this punishment. When they found the evidence of cigarette butts that the four kids ha smoked in the basement. Blaz made Mary, Joe, an Rudy eat the pile of disgus* ing old butts. For Nick5 punishment, they gave him long cigar and told him tha whatever he didn’t smoke, he had to eat. While Joe, and Rudy turned Sr^e eating the butts, smoked contentedly on cigar until just a nub W3 left, he popped it in 1 mouth and went away laughing. (Continued on page 7) I I i i I ! I ( Eulogy for Mr. Blaž Vavpetic (Continued from page 6) • Uncle Nick and the brick. Here’s how Uncle Nick remembers it: “The «ost vivid memories of my father are all looking over Ny shoulder or in the rear-v'ew mirror. 1 knew what his bot bottoms were, but didn’t toow when to quit pushing them. Of the many instances, °ne of the most memorable 18 the time when Dad and I "'ere building a shed. A httle luck and lots of training flowed me to avoid the “rick. Unfortunately, it anded on the hood of Dad’s brand new Chevrolet. Once aSain, it was time to seek refuge at the Miller sanctuary where many a storm was "’oathered. For this and arany moments like it, it was "ever a question of whether °r not I could return home, °nly how long my Dad’s poling period would last ased on the work yet to be done.” , * Uncle Tony and the cow b,es in the front yard. Here’s °'v Uncle Tony relays the story; “Da(i was stem, but air- One Sunday afternoon aat comes to mind, my rothers and I were playing 0°tball in the front yard \nich had quite a few cow ps on it), and one of my r°thers (you know which . e you are) pushed me jj°'vn into a cow pie. While thi always required to be done his way, w0ethpr l H , ier we knew it was the °r Wrong» he knew who pe real boss was... and AtuT ^es'tated to say so. that was Grandma. tle randpa won some bat-HTUt Grandma ALWAYS ship Wars- ^heir relation-'Ofi u feW -------, & io be marveled at and ip a . thino na marriage is some- playful and flirtatious - even if they always bickered. In Chad’s words, “Often Ata would joke with “mama” (the boss as he called her) about their many years together. Their love and affection for one another was unmistakable. Still, his attempts to get a kiss were always met by the crossed forearms of her half-hearted resistance. It was also funny when he pretended he couldn’t hear what Grandma said to him, and he’d ask, “Kaj mama?” which constantly drove her nuts. While he didn’t always listen as well as he could have, he never complained or spoke badly of anybody -except directly to him or her. He never complained about ANYTHING Grandma ever cooked. Always eating whatever she put on the table... and always in the aluminum plates made from the scrap metal of crashed German aircraft that they used in the displaced persons camp called “Lagar” in Austria. BUT, while generally easygoing, kind, fair, and good-natured, Blaz also had a great need for order, for things to be done his way. He always stood up for what he thought was right, and he had a clear vision of how things should be done. He had his chair at the kitchen table and in the living room. And nobody was allowed to sit in them except him (a practice inherited by some of his sons). When he left his beloved Slovenia in 1945, he left with 3 boxes, and one of them was his accordion. God knows how he ever convinced Grandma to allow him to take it, but it was coming with him, come hell or high water. The importance of music to him and to his family was unbelievable. Nobody will ever forget the look on his face whenever he played, a look of concentration and peace and remembrance of his homeland and family and friends. He was in a different place when he played, a place probably not unlike heaven. He played that accordion until his very last days. John Valant translated a Slovenian song for me that seems to capture the essence of this aspect of Grandpa’s life. Here is how the refrain goes: “Mi Smo Muzikantje,” by Bratov Poljanšek (We Are Musicians” by Brothers Poljanšek). English translation: We are musicians From Kamnik, our home From far and from near Everyone already knows us Happily we play We sing in between Always we are with you We play for your dance. That about sums up the nature of Blaz Vavpetič. God looked after this man and his family for 89 years, and there is no reason to believe that the same won’t continue far into the future if we all just remember what he showed us over a lifetime: 0 Family is important. 0 Our Slovenian heritage is important. 0 Loving your spouse like you did on your wedding day is important. 0 Standing up - even fighting - for what you believe is important. 0 Helping those in need is important. 0 Realizing how lucky we are is important. 0 Making industrious use of our short time is important. 0 Celebrating the good in our lives and in the world is important. 0 Having a youthful heart is important. 0 Being passionate about life is important. So, today, Blaz, Ata, Grandpa, we say “Lahko noč,” one last time - sleep well in God’s hands. But remember that at least a “leetle beet” of your Slovenian soul and your Vavpetič vitality will remain in all of our hearts. You were a real sonamagun. Uncle Nick, as our new patriarch, you have big shoes to fill. Photographer Arne Hodalic’s Book Receives Applause “Photographer Arne Hodalič presents in his new book 12 years of his journalistic and artistic work in a lavishly produced monograph. “The photographer has traveled extensively while shooting for European magazines, and he treats readers to color images that range from Venice, Italy to the “remote mountains of South America.” “Open the book to any page, and it becomes clear that Hodalič relies heavily on juxtaposition for impact. The portraits and intimate landscapes are paired in ways that are sometimes clever, and other times heavy-handed. First-person diary excerpts translated from Slovenian by Erica John De- beljak punctuate the photographs. “Hodalic’s work is always memorable and often moving, and it effectively calls into question traditional lines of perception between photojournalism and art...” Review from the November 15, 2003 edition of The Library Journal of “Voyage into the Illusory Mirror; Photography 1988-2000” by Arne Hodalič. Cleveland, were saddened by the passing of “Billy” Turk the very next day. Billy Turk was an unpretentious, good Slovenian who came from a rather famous large family in the St. Lawrence Parish. Alois “Billy” was the third son of John and Mary (nee Shuster), and beloved brother of Johnny, Joseph (Mooney), Ralph (Ralphie), Lawrence (Jimbo, Tushey or Doc, now Fr. Damien), and Richard (Dickey or Porter) and sisters Betty (Thomas), Mary Catherine (Krako-wiak), and Josie (Bowditch). Surviving are Fr. Damien and his sisters; the other men are deceased. He was an uncle, great uncle, and great-great uncle of many. He finished South High School in 1940 and was the Sandlot Star of the Week for Newburgh Furniture. Later he entered the U.S. Coast Guard. He was an amateur boxer during his enlistment and was discharged after one year of service due to a punctured ear drum. He immediately took up his principle avocation as a ballplayer. He entered Ohio University where he starred as their shortstop. After two years he went on the road to pursue his dream. He played semi-pro ball in the White Sox minor league chain in Canada, Louisiana and Texas. He came home to lead local Class A hardball teams in batting and to many championships. He practiced fundamentals of the game exhaustively. Billy was my hero as I grew up in the neighborhood. One of the highlights of my life was when he took his cousin Timmy Shuster and me on a bus trip to a baseball tournament in Springfield, Ohio around 1950. He was playing for Rosenblum’s, a top notch , Class A team, in an era where fastball hardball was the tops. Even Bob Feller once pitched for Rosenblum’s back in 1936. Billy once won the Most Valuable Player Award in a Regional Tournament in the late 1940s. Billy was their shortstop, captain, and star of the team. He later managed the first Laurentians teams. He was more than a mere manager. Always a teacher, he stressed fundamentals ot any sport. His advice to outfielders was to hustle on all occasions, anticipate the next play, hit your cut-off man, and back up your infielders for any possible errant throws. Alois “Billy” Turk He was a mentor to any prospective athletes who sought his counsel. He encouraged John Turk (no relative), one of his prodigies from East 82nd, an Ohio U. Hall-of-Famer, who starred as a catcher and also a football linebacker, then in the Minors until illness struck him. Billy became an outstanding handball player at Broadway YMCA, then Broadway Recreation, where he competed with such stalwarts as Eddie Zabak, Frank Rajar, Steve Relic, Bob Brown, Dale Krusoe, plus many other very good players that he competed against in local tournaments. He was also attracted to the ponies. He and his brothers “Mooney,” “Porter,” and sometimes “Doc,” along with “Beanie” Resnik, “Skipper,” “Springie,” and other railbirds could be seen at the pay window at Thistledown. He became a near scratch golfer with the Laurentians then Broadway Golf Association. He enjoyed playing against Red Marinčič, Bob Krusoe, Frank Mahnič, Frank Rajar, and many others on the links. He won one of our Senior Open Heart Opens at Boston Hills. He usually was among the leaders for high average in bowling and he was the best of the horseshoe pitchers at the Laurentian picnics. Billy was my Confirmation sponsor, who taught me an abundant amount about sports and life in general. His life was one of simplicity, an innate goodness, and a deep consideration for others. He will be remembered by most from the neighborhood as long as we can think good things about the old days. Alois “Bill” Turk had a fatal heart attack on his birthday, June 2, 2004 when he reached the age of 81. Services were held on Thursday, the 10,h at the Fortuna Funeral Home, then at St. Lawrence Church. As you know “restoration” of the Doan Brook is being carried out as part of a larger project intended to compensate for the loss of Abram Creek that occurred during the Hopkins Airport expansion. The Federation has been largely opposed to this project because restoration, in this case, is to return the streambed to its natural state while sacrificing many historic features of the Park and Gardens and significantly changing its character. The key features of the proposal that raise the most concern are as follows: • Complete removal of over 50% of the masonry retaining walls and replacement with graded embankments. Of the walls that will be left standing, 50% are categorized as being in poor condition. These walls will not be repaired as part of this project. • Re-routing and extensive widening of the river channel. • Regrading of 10.6 acres of formal mowed lawn area into low-lying flood plain for expansion of the brook during high water, with a total of 14.72 acres of lawn space, being replaced with wetland plants, native shrubs, dead tree shafts and root snags. In 2003, the Federation commissioned Hydrosphere Engineering to evaluate this proposal from an engineering standpoint, without regard to the impact on the historic elements in the Park and Gardens. Several major concerns were identified as summarized below: • The proposed restoration methods of this project have been used primarily in non-urbanized watersheds. In urbanized watersheds there is very little long-term data, but the application of these methods has resulted in missed outcomes with some failing only a few years after construction. • The plan appears to give priority to the protection of roadways and bridges by the placement of retaining walls, but does not provide the same protection for many of the historic areas. • Removal of retaining walls may increase bank erosion. In the areas of the Cultural Gardens, the result could be the loss of lawn surface area and the destabi- YOU’RE INVITED to our annual OPEN HOUSE at ST. Hardlines Design, a cultural resource management company that studied this renovation proposal as part of the Section 106 process, identified nine major, direct adverse effects to Rockefeller Park and the Gardens that will result from this project. Direct adverse impacts are defined as physical ^ impacts that result in the alteration of a character defining feature creating a loss: of integrity. In addition to citing the obvious negative aesthetic effects created by removal of more than half of the masonry retaining walls, the report stated that “...portions of the park would cease to resemble the manicure picturesque landscape design originally envisioned for the park, and would take on a more rough appearance reminiscent of a nature preserve.” In a recent letter to the Army Corps of Engineers, the Cultural Garden Federation stated that the current renovation plan is not acceptable because the proposed changes to the Doan Brook in Rockefeller Park will irreparably damage many historic features, permanently alter the character of the Park, diminish its use as a public park and jeopardize the future of this national landmark to world peace and the richness of our cultural diversity. The Federation will continue to fight to protect this potential national landmark and very important community asset. As a result, I suggest to our Board of Directors that we do not sign the Doan Brook Memorandum of Agreement which the Board unanimously approved on Tuesday, May 11. But for those with joint pain, summertime can be especially difficult because of the negative effects that heat, humidity and increased activity can have on joints already stressed or diseased from conditions like osteoarthritis. According to the Arthritis Foundation, osteoarthritis, one of the most common joint ailments and the most prevalent form of arthritis, affects an estimated 20.7 million Americans, mostly after age 45. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disease in which the cartilage that covers the ends of bones in the joint deteriorates, causing pain and loss of movement as bone begins to rub against bone. The Foundation notes that 80 percent of those with OA report some form of limitation in movement or activities, which can be particularly frustrating during a season when many people are out gardening, on . the golf course, walking or running in the park, playing softball or one of many favorite summer pursuits. Given the pain and physical limitations, many people with joint pain give up their favorite warm weather activities and become more and more sedentary. Currently, there is no cure for osteoarthritis. Instead, doctors focus on alleviating joint pain with over-the-counter and prescription anti-inflammatory drugs, many of which can have negative side effects. As an alternative, researchers have been looking at nutritional interventions with foods and supplements. During the growth period from childhood to early adulthood, vitamins and minerals —particularly vitamin C, calcium and vitamin D—promote the growth of cartilage and bone tissue and the development of healthy joints. The stronger the joint, is, the theory goes, the less vulnerable it is to damage. New treatments for osteoarthritis may help people enjoy a pain-free season. Promising new research also indicates that collagen hydrolysate (CH), a special type of gelatine, may be able to strengthen joint cartilage and reduce joint pain. Collagen hydrolysate has the same amino acid composition as the collagen that is found in joint cartilage. Collagen provides the joint with its tensile strength and stiffness. Two studies have suggested that consumption of 10 grams of CH each day reduces pain and improves physical function in patients with OA when taken for a minimum of 60 days. Another study demonstrated that CH not only reduced pain but also the need for pain-relievers in patients with OA. Collagen hydrolysate is currently available in several nutritional supplements. Previously, researchers had thought that cartilage was a “dead” tissue, unable to regenerate once damaged or deteriorated. What makes CH particularly interesting is that laboratory studies have found that it can actually stimulate the production of collagen and, in turn, stimulate the regeneration of cartilage in the joint. So summertime living can be easy, as well as pain free. Dr. Zenon A. JUNE 24, 2004 io Why the American Flag is Folded 13 Times Have you ever wondered why the flag of the United States of America is folded 3 times when it is lowered or when it is folded and handed to the widow at the burial of a veteran? Here is the meaning of each of those folds and what it means to you. The ‘first fold’ of our flag is a symbol of life. The ‘second fold’ is a symbol of our belief in eternal life. The ‘third fold’ is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing our ranks who gave a portion of their lives for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world. The ‘fourth fold’ represents our weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in time of war for His divine guidance. The ‘fifth fold’ is a tribute to our country, for the words of Stephen Decatur, “Our Country, in dealing with other countries may she always be right; but it is still our country, right or wrong.” The ‘sixth fold’ is for where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all. The ‘seventh fold’ is a tribute to our Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that We protect our country and our flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic. The ‘eighth fold’ is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day, and to honor mother, for whom it flies on Mother’s Day. The ‘ninth fold’ is a tribute to womanhood; for it has been through their faith, their love, loyalty, and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great has been molded. The ‘tenth fold’ is a tribute to the father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since they were first bom. The ‘eleventh fold,’ in the eyes of a Hebrew citizen, represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon, and glorifies in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The ‘twelfth fold’ in the eyes of a Christian citizen, represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in their eyes, God the Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit. When the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost reminding us of our nation’s motto, “In God We Trust.” After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington, and the sailors and marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for us the rights, privileges, and freedoms we enjoy today. The next time you see a flag ceremony honoring someone who has served our country, either in the Armed Forces or in our civilian services such as the Police Force or Fire Department, keep in mind all the important reasons behind each and every movement. They have paid the ultimate sacrifice for all of us by honoring our flag and our Country. We honor our country and flag on this great holiday of July 4th. —St. Vitus Catholic War Veterans News Bulletin Old Golfers Joke... “How was your game, dear?” asked Jack’s wife Tracy. “Well, 1 was hitting pretty well, but my eyesight’s gotten so bad I couldn’t see where the ball went,” he answered. “But you’re 75-years-old Jack.” admonished his wife, “Why don’t you take my brother Scott along?” “But he’s 85 and doesn’t play golf anymore,” protested Jack. “But he’s got perfect eyesight. He would watch the ball for you,” Tracy pointed out. The next day Jack teed off with Scott looking on. Jack swung and the ball disappeared down the middle of the fairway. “Did you see it?” asked jack. “Yup,” Scott answered. “Well, where is it?” yelled Jack, peering off into the distance. “I forgot.” This chuckle was from Philip Hrvatin. Vsi zaporniki so preživeli več tednov grobih zasliševanj v gestapovskih zaporih v palači Slavij a. Organizacija ni nikdar dosegla nekega večjega obsega in v določenih krogih so se ji celo posmehovali zaradi maloštevilčnosti, neučinkovitosti, in kdo ve česa še. Primum vivere! V osrednjem delu besedila avtor podaja še stališča v zvezi z vlogo in položajem Slovenije po vstopu v Evropsko unijo, predvsem z vidika slovenskih nacionalnih interesov. V zbirki Dober večer, Tokio in vseh nadaljnjih zbirkah, denimo Ljubezen in smrt. To bo kratek sestanek. “Smo leta 2004, to ni več enostrankarski sistem! A: Prav res. Peter Zimmermann s prispevkom Pot do spomenika. Že vrsto let si bavar-sko-slovensko društvo v Miinchnu prizadeva zaznamovati njegovo vlogo in ga vsaditi v zavest strokovne in širše javnosti. . Priporočajte nas L,
