The Slovenian World Congress was established to foster the discussion and possible future cooperation in development of technology between scientists and academicians of Slovenian descent who work abroad. In addition to the above activity, Mr. Anzic was also invited to present a lecture on space communication satellite technology to the students and faculty of the Electrical Engineering Department of the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, on September 27. This invitation was in conjunction with a visit of a group of University of Ljubljana students who visited the Communications Technology division’s facilities last year, where Mr. Anzic presented a short lecture on the Advanced Communications Technology Satellite in their native Slovenian tongue. This work is supported by the Cross Enterprise Technology Development. The Advanced Communications Satellite (ACTS) was launched in 1993 by NASA as an experimental platform to pave the way for the next generation of communication satellites. The spacecraft was used by the US government (NASA) and industry as a national research facility to test and demonstrate the advanced communications technologies developed. The spacecraft was the first “switchboard in the sky” which employed frequency reuse and hopping spot beams. Miro’s presentation at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, traced the history of development, operation, experiments and retirement of the extremely successful all digital spacecraft. The initial two year mission was extended (four year design life) and the spacecraft is now in the seventh year of operation. Miro Anzic is a graduate of John Carroll University, Cleveland, 011 (BS Physics). After college Mr. Anzic spent two years with the US Army in Korea serving as a battalion communications officer. At NASA-GIenn, he is presently serving as a senior electronics engineer in the Applied RF Technology Branch of the Communications Technology Division. His present responsibilities include the development of space and terrestrial microwave communications components and systems. His past responsibilities included significant development work in areas of man-made RF noise measurement, monolithic micro-wave integrated circuits (MMIC’s), Ku band satellite ground terminals and in-orbit characterization and testing of the world’s first high power, Ku band communications satellite. He has been employed at NASA-GIenn for 37 years, eight of which were spent in technical management (Branch Chief)- Mr. Anzic’s hobbies include skiing and amateur radio. He has been a licensed amateur radio operator in the US for 45 years (K8BVI, Extra Class) and in Slovenia for 3 years (S57BA, Class 1, Radioklub Vevče). The Foundation is extremely pleased that Professor Timothy Pogačar, Ph.D. will discuss the life and work of Slovenia’s greatest poet, France Prešeren. The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. in the Lower Hall of the Slovenian Society Home, 20713 Re-cher Avenue in Euclid, Ohio. A coffee and strudel social will follow the lecture. In Slovenia this year has been dedicated as “Prešeren Year” in commemoration of the 200^ Anniversary of his birth. France Prešeren, the most important Slovene poet of the Romantic Movement, perhaps best expresses the national consciousness of the Slovene people. His poem Zdravljica (A Toast) has been adopted as the Republic of Slovenia’s national anthem. Timothy Pogačar, Ph.D. has been Chair of the Department of . German, Russian & East Asian Languages at Bowling Green State University since 1998. He held the prior positions of Assistant Professor, 1985- 1990, Director of the International Studies Department, 1989-1993 and Associate Professor of Russian since 1991. Professor Pogačar received his Ph.D. in Slavic Languages & Literatures from the University of Kansas in 1985, a M.A. in Russian Language & Literature from the University of Kansas in 1981 and a B.S. in Russian, Spanish & Linguistics from Georgetown University in 1979. He served as president of the Xi of Ohio Phi Beta Kappa chapter and since 1996 has been the editor of Slavic Studies: Journal of the Society for Slovene Studies. Professor Pogačar’s research interests include Twentieth-century Russian literature and Slovenian literature. The supreme quality for leadership is unquestionably integrity. At May Co. i bought a “White” electric sewing machine for $200, on the condition that I could return it if my wife doesn't like it. Cilka felt the sewing machine was much too expensive, so I took it back. Friday, Nov. 12, 1954 A salesman came to our home and showed us sewing machines for $58 and $190. The first one was no good, the second too expensive. Saturday, Nov. 13, 1954 We went to the St. Vincent de Paul store on Superior and E. 53r<^. I bought an old suit and Cilka found a sewing machine for $7. It uses a foot pedal for power and works fine. Sunday, Nov. 14, 1954 This afternoon Karl Erznožnik drove us to the west side, 4730 Broadview, where Ruth Jesenko will have her Wedding. On the way back. we stopped and visited Mary Kolenc on W. 22. She showed us some turniture that we could have. Wednesday, Nov. 17,1954 Both Cilka and I are often having dreams about our next child, always with bad signs: dirty water, fish, meat, priests and dead people. Last night l also dreamed about my mother, the first time since she died two months ago. In the evening, Fortuna and 1 stripped the paint off the sewing machine, so I can refinish it. Thursday, Nov. 18, 1954 Bill Risher (the shop owner) finally asked who wants a turkey for Thanksgiving and who wants ham. 1 want turkey! There is also talk about 5 layoffs. In the afternoon, a friend drove his truck twice to Kolenc’s on West 22 to pick up a tall wardrobe, two chests of drawers, a chair, two beds and other things for us. I gave him $8 for both trips. Saturday, Nov. 20, 1954 I received books from my brother Vlado in Slovenia: a grammar book for Prof. Ovsenik, a cookbook for Cilka and an English-Sloven ian dictionary for me. America Sunday, Nov. 21, 1954 I wrote a letter to my father, then filled out citizenship forms for Mrs. Cerar. Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1954 The shop gave me a 23 pound turkey for Thanksgiving. Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1954 Today’s check did not include a deduction for Social Security, which means Eve earned more than the maximum taxable for Social Security, which is $3,600. Friday, Nov. 26, 1954 I worked all day on refinishing the furniture we got earlier this week. Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1954 The shop received a new shipment of steel pieces to work on. Now some of us will need to work 10 hours a day. In the evening I went shopping for presents for St. Nicholas. Mrs. Ovsenek helped pay for the presents. Sunday, Dec. 5, 1954 Last night, while the children slept, St. Nicholas brought lots of presents: a toy car for each boy, new slippers and many other things. The children were happy and played all day. J E ►> i ‘Thank you’ plaques to be displayed at Lemont Center In Lemont, Illinois, at the Slovenian Cultural Center, when the building was completed and dedicated five years ago, a fund-raising effort was begun for financial help. Our beautiful building is worth more than a million dollars, and it is even more valuable in its wonderful service to us. We gather there with joy in our hearts and always have an uplifting visit. The major fundraiser that was begun in 1995 is now finally coming to a close. The Slovenska Lipa Tree memorial wall decoration will be installed and viewed for the first time at our fifth anniversary. The Blessing of the Slovenska Lipa will be a part of the fifth anniversary celebration and take place right after Holy Mass at the Dom. The Lipa Tree is composed of almost 400 golden, silver and bronze lipa leaves that form the tree. Underneath there are about 60 stones of various sizes, all with in-, scriptions. Some of our leaves are memorials to past loved ones and families, and some are just a statement of loyalty and love. Many individuals are named, as well as families. Our Slovenian organizations have been most generous and many businesses are represented. In addition to the Lipa Tree, we will dedicate a wall plaque stating the names of the many skilled builders who volunteered their time and expertise in the actual building of the place. Most of all the work it took to build our Slovenski Dom was done by these masters of all forms of construction, bricklayers, carpenters, plasterers laborers and finishers, painters and carpet/tile layers. The work was immense and a challenge to all. But, we have been enjoying the result of their work now for five years, and it is time to recognize them. We have 72 names on the Builders’ Honor Roll, and each one of them gave us their generous spirit and skill. We know that to them all the thanks they need is the successful continuation of the activities and affection every one has shown here in whatever they are doing. Next time* anyone visits the Slovenski Dom they will find a beautiful and artistic indoor Lipa Tree, to match those living ones outdoors that were planted five years ago and are now growing big and strong. He was one of the league’s most respected side judges, but now, Bryan is on the sidelines. He retired as a Big Ten official after last season. “There’s a little withdrawal,’’ said Bryan, who is the athletic director at Hawken School in Pepper Pike. Ohio. “On Saturdays, you turn on the television set and see guys you know. More than anything else, I miss the friendships. I’ve stayed in telephone contact with some of the guys.” The Big Ten Football Officials Association is an exclusive club. Each season, 49 officials form the group that works Big Ten games. From 1985 through 1999, Bryan was one of the 49. “I was about to turn 60, and that’s sort of a magic number,” said Bryan, who continues to work as an Arena Football League official. “The Big Ten looks at milestones like 10, 15, 20 years. I knew I’d reach 15, but I didn’t know if I’d reach 20. I was able to go out at peace with myself and on my own terms, and during my last year, I was happy to hear some nice things said about me from people around the league.” Bryan began officiating junior high school games in 1964, then advanced to high school, Ohio Conference, Ohio Valley Conference and Mid-American Conference games during the next 20 years. In 1970, Bryan became the Hawken athletic director, a position he expects to retire from in the next eight months. The Hawks have won numerous state championships in boys and girls swimming and girls track during Bryan’s tenure as athletic director, and have become a state power in boys and girls soccer. Bryan was vacationing in Florida during spring 985 when the supervisor of Big Ten officials, Gene Calhoun, called to offer him an official’s job. The second game Bryan worked was Michigan State at Notre Dame in a nationally televised night match-up. “In the first quarter, you’re still in a dream world; you’re sort of numb,” Bryan said. “Any pressure never bothered me, though. I think the first time you walk out of the tunnel with 105,000 people in the stands at Michigan, you can’t help but notice. But once the game starts, you have to concentrate on your responsibilities so much, and that’s what keeps your attention.” Big-time college coaches look for any advantage. It’s no surprise that they try to influence the seven man officiating crews. “Once, I walked into a locker room several hours before game-time, and I saw pictures of all seven of us on a bulletin board, with the names of our wives and children and what our regular jobs were,” said Bryan, who lives in Richmond Heights with his wife, Dorothy. Their sons, Brad, 35, a lawyer, and Ted, 33, a sales representative, were three-sport athletes at Hawken. I always thought, “they can’t quote silence.” So I would just say, “Good afternoon, coach,’ and not say anything else.” Beginning every March, Big Ten officials take monthly rule-book tests. In August, they attend an intense three-day rules clinic at the league offices in Chicago. The night before the game, and on the morning of the game, the men study films of their work and of the teams about to play. After the game, they review game films and document all calls. The officials are graded by four people: both coaches, a referee observer in the press box and the Big Ten supervisor of officials after he meets with technical advisers and reviews films. It’s serious business, because much is at stake during many of the games. Bryan officiated three Ohio State-Michigan games and three major bowl games. He worked the 1990 Sugar Bowl, when the University of Miami defeated Alabama, 33-25, and won the national championship. The shelves along two walls in Bryan’s small office at Hawken are filled with books on various subjects. In the midst of them are three framed photographs of Bryan in action. Westbrook had just caught the 64-yard “Hail Mary” pass from Kordell Stewart, giving Colorado its dramatic 27-26 win at Ann Arbor, Mich. “The place was very, very noisy,” Bryan said, recalling the memorable 1994 game. “After that play, you could hear a pin drop, it was so quiet.” When Ohio State’s David Boston caught a long touchdown pass over Michigan’s Charles Woodson, who had slipped, it was Bryan who flagged the Buckeyes receiver for taunting his opponent. Michigan won the i997 game, 20-14 in Ann Arbor. As much as an official concentrates on rules and mechanics, he can’t help but notice great players. Bryan said he was impressed by how Michigan's Desmond Howard “could catch the ball along the sideline, with a foot one inch in bounds” or how Purdue’s Drew Brees has an “amazing way of putting the ball right on the receiver’s fingertips without their breaking stride” or how he was surprised that, when Wisconsin’s Ron Dayne “turned the corner, I actually saw defensive backs fall down on purpose so they wouldn’t have to hit him.” —Mike Peticca The Plain Dealer Tom Bryan is the son-in-law of Alice (Kastelic) Opalich of Richmond fleights, Ohio. Military Burial at Sea. 100 WORDS MORE OR LESS By John Mercina ALL SAINTS & ALL SOULS Information that follows was taken from a Slovenian book entitled, “Pod Vernim Krovom**, detailing old Slovenian customs surrounding the holy days throughout the Church year. “Our ancestors gave a lot more thought than we do today to the eternity and their soul. Because of that fact, the November 1 and 2 dates had a much bigger meaning to the faithful. The church stressed that the souls in purgatory needed the prayers of the faithful that were alive, for them to be able to get out of purgatory and get to heaven. Fasting and abstinence were the norm in the days before All Saints Day. In Bela Krajina, no food or drink of any kind was allowed until darkness. Children were told that it is better for all of us to be fasting here on earth as a group, than to suffer by ourselves in purgatory. Many faithful visited the cemeteries in the days before All Saints Day to perform annual upkeep of the gravesite. The ladies of the house busied themselves with baking of small breads, similar to a “zemlja”. In the Primorsko and the Notranjsko regions, these small breads were called “vabtiČi**. They were given to poor kids and adults who came in large groups to the outside of individual homes and hollored that they came to get “God’s hlebček kruha” ( bread baked the size of a large dinner role). Near Ajdov&ina and Idrija, these small breads were called “presce”. The normal thank you for being given this bread were the words “God have pity on the souls in purgatory” or “Bog lonaj”. In the hills around Idrija, the rule was that the recipient of the bread had to pray as many Our Fathers as there were the number of blades of grass in an area that would be covered by the small bread, were it placed on the ground. The recipient had to pray either for the giver or for giver’s deceased relatives. A typical home baked as many as 200 to 300 of these small breads every year to pass out to the poor people that came to individual homes, begging for food. Other items that were given to the poor were apples, pears and potatoes. In other parts of Slovenia, similar small breads were called “sirkuec” in Koroško, “’’krapce” in StJakob and “hejdovca” in Rož. Some of these breads were also passed out at the cemetery. Many poor people collected whole wagons full of bread. “ What do you plan on doing for the poor this All Saints and All Souls days? Filtch Thieves in the 16R1 century used a rod and line with a hook on it to steal goods from vendors’ stalls. This device, called a filtch, gave rise to our word for “to steal in a furtive manner,” to snatch. Under the Clinton-Gore Administration our relationship with Slovenia has blossomed. Numerous gas bubbles hissed and burst from the tumultuous water. The villagers were amazed and frightened by this natural wonder and believed it to be a “bublja” where the witches were cooking hail with which to destroy their fields and vineyards. They feared that the day after the “bublja” erupted, a terrible thunderstorm would break over the land and ruin the crops on the hills of Kapela, Murščak and Janežev vrh. BUSH ON CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE SUPPORTING DEMOCRACY, PEACE AND FREEDOM I am proud that America's commitment to freedom and democracy was rewarded in 1989 with the emergence of a Europe whole and free. In the new era that resulted, some of America's strongest friends and allies have been the democracies of Central and Eastern Europe. These countries are making progress toward developing market economies and democratic political systems that are the best way to ensure their long-term stability and security. In their recent histories, these nations have shown their commitment to the values shared by members of the transatlantic community. Many have already made a real contribution to the defense of these values in Bosnia and Kosovo. The basic principles of freedom and dignity are universal. People should be able to say what they think, worship as they wish, and elect those who govern them. These ideals have proven their power on every continent. Through their historic struggle against Communism and their ultimate triumph, the people of Central and Eastern Europe inspired the world. All Americans recognize and applaud the tremendous achievements of the people of Central and Eastern Europe in reclaiming their freedom and rejoining the transatlantic community of democracies. America has one national creed, but many accents. If I am elected President, I will actively support the democracies of Central and Eastern Europe by promoting economic development and regional peace, and strengthening ties between these nations and the United States of America. www.GeorgeWBush.com Paid tor by Bush/Cbeney 2000, Inc. Pretekli torek Zvezna republika Jugoslavije postala nova članica Združenih držav — Članstvo podprla tudi Slovenija V torek je Varnostni svet OZN v New Yorku soglasno podprl, naj postane ZRJ nova članica Združenih narodov. VS je namreč brez ugovora in glasovanja sprejel resolucijo, v kateri priporoča generalni skupščini sprejem v OZN “nove” države ZRJ. Za sprejem po-Miloševičeve ZRJ so vse štiri države, naslednice nekdanje Jugoslavije. Tako bodo v OZN končno z droga spustili zastavo nekdanje SFRJ z redečo zvezdo -ta pred palačo OZN še visi - in izobesili zastavo ZRJ. A. M. Slomšek: V nebesih sem doma, / to o-znanjujeta / mi zemlja in nebo / in vsaka stvar lepo. Pecivo so še darovale: Mici Jeretina, Ida Babič, Ema Purkargt, Joži Horvat, Julka Kaluža, Micka Mavec, Pepca Bunšek, Sofija Rašeta, Marija Glavač, Ivanka Žerdin, Marija Rigler, Marinka Rozman, Minka Grašič in Lilijana Čepon. Kuhinjo sta imeli na skrbi Frances in Ed Fritz, pomagali so Vladimir in Nancy Grah, Joe Kular, Valerie Guvo, Meta Hanzlik in Magajnovi Mojca, Mil*) Mark in Miha. Vstopnice so prodajale: Mihaela Sini' rayh, Ivanka Markun in Rudi Crnekovič. Zahvala vsem, ki ste kakorkoli pripomogli k lepemu uspehu “Medenega piknika 2000.” Bog plačaj in blagoslavljaj Vas in Vaše družine! To jim ni uspelo. PRVA SEJA... (nadaljevanje s str. Frank Gormek: Poročilo Razgovor bo vodil dr. Peter Klopčič. VSI VLJUDNO VABUENI! Slovensko-kanadski svet TORONTO, Ont. - Od 25. septembra do 3. oktobra je skupina štirideset članov župnij Marije Pomagaj in Brezmadežne obiskovala zgodovinska italijanska mesta Rim, Assisi, Perugio, Arezzo, Firenze, Padovo, Benetke in Akvilejo. Skozi Sveta vrata smo vstopili v baziliko sv. Petra in panorame Rima. S študentko cerkvene zgodovine in umetnosti smo ta dan obiskali še bazilike sv. Pavla, Marije Snežne (Santa Maria Maggiore) in sv. Janeza v Lateranu. Maksimilijanom Jezernikom, rektorjem zavoda Slovenik, kjer študirajo slovenski duhovniki cerkvene vede. V četrtek, 28. septembra, po sestanku z dr. Bonutti-jem na slovenskem' veleposlaništvu v Vatikanu smo nadaljevali pot v Assisi k baziliki sv. Frančiška, kjer smo v starodavni kapelici pod cerkvici prisostvovali sv. maši (g. župnik Valentin Batič) in obiskali še cerkev sv. Klare. V zadnjem potresu leta 1996 sta bili obe cerkvi močno poškodovani, kakor tudi mesto Assisi. Zvečer smo dospeli v Firenze in počivali v modernem hotelu Starhotel Vespucci. S pomočjo vzornega vodiča smo drugi dan spo- znavali lepote srednjeveške renesanse. V cerkvi sv. Križa (Santa Croce) smo stali pred nagrobnimi spomeniki Michelangela, Galileja, Danteja Alighierija in drugih slavnih italijanskih mož renesančne dobe. Sedaj nismo turisti, čeprav so oči polne lepote cerkva in nove dežele. Deževje in morska plima sta preplavila trg sv. Marka. Odtod so oglejski patriarhi pošiljali misijonarje na vzhod k Slovanom (sv. Mohor in Fortunat). Tam so kanadske romarje pričakovali ožji in daljni sorodniki in prijatelji našega voditelja g. Misijonska srečanja in pomenki 1352. Bog naj Vas vse varuje in sveta Terezika! Ernest Saksida, misijonar.” P. Opeka $100, Rev. L. Letonja $100, Rev. T. Mavrič $100) $620; N. Tomc (za s. M. Pavlišič) $100; v spomin +Frank Smole (družina in prijatelji) $200; H.T. Ribič $50; N.N. $100; A.H. Gorše (za bog.) $350; N.N. (za Rev. A. Podgrajšek) $20; N.N.
