SLOVENSKA ŽUPNIJA SV. GREGORIJA VELIKEGA | ST. GREGORY THE GREAT SLOVENIAN CHURCH 13/59 Številka - Number / Leto - Year 26.3. 2023 5. POSTNA (TIHA) NEDELJA 5TH SUNDAY OF LENT Fr. Drago Gačnik, SDB ŽUPNIK - PASTOR NASLOV - ADDRESS 125 Centennial Pkwy N. Jezusova velikonočna skrivnost je namreč skrivnost smrti in vstajenja od mrtvih. Povabljeni smo, da vstopimo vanjo z upanjem zmage. Sprejeti ga moramo z velikodušnostjo, z zaupanjem in hvaležnostjo Bogu. - (Prim.: Oznanjevalec 2, 2008) 122 | VESTNIK 2023 5TH SUNDAY OF LENT Response: With the Lord there is steadfast love and great power to redeem. First Reading Ezekiel 37:12-14 Through the prophet, the Lord speaks to the community in exile: “I shall put my spirit in you, and you will live.” Second Reading Romans 8:8-11 Paul focuses on how God’s Spirit lives in us. Gospel John 11:1-45 The extraordinary account of the final sign that Jesus gave – the raising of Lazarus from death itself. “He cried in a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, here! Come out!’” Illustration “There was a man named Lazarus” is what we’re told in the opening sentence of today’s Gospel. The way Lazarus is introduced suggests that he was well known to many people in the community for which the Fourth Gospel, the one attributed to John, was written. Lazarus has two sisters and this just about tells us all there is to know about Lazarus. Today’s Gospel story is told from the perspective of Jesus and his disciples making their way to Jerusalem, presumably for Passover. There is also the suggestion of this being the lead-up to Jesus’ own passion and death. They are approaching the town of Bethany. This was what we might call the “bed and breakfast” district for those who were travelling to Jerusalem, especially at the time of Passover. There is a cloud hanging over the gathering as Jesus receives important information: “Lord, the man you love is ill.” This message had been sent by Lazarus’ two sisters, Martha and Mary. There’s a strange piece of editing going on here, because the evangelist tells us that Mary was the sister of the sick man Lazarus, and it was Mary who anointed Jesus’ head and wiped his feet with her hair. The problem is that, in John’s account, we have still to hear that story. The raising of Lazarus will be the final “sign” in the Gospel of John – there are no “miracles” here, the writer of this Gospel calls them “signs”. Jesus says to the disciples, “Let us go to Judaea”, where Bethany was located. The disciples are not happy about this because, as they say, “the Jews wanted to stone you; are you going back again?” The short answer is that they do go back to Judaea. Gospel Teaching When Jesus and his disciples reach Bethany – a place that was used for overnight accommodation by pilgrims travelling to Jerusalem for major feasts like Passover – they are met by Martha, one of the sisters of Lazarus. Martha appears in two Gospels: this one, obviously, and in Luke where Jesus visits the sisters. Martha has a lot to say for herself in both cases. Here, she tells Jesus that her brother would not have died had he, Jesus, arrived earlier. She does concede that even now God will hear Jesus’ prayers. Jesus reassures her that Lazarus will live, and Martha replies that she knows he will rise again at the resurrection on the last day. Jesus tells her that he himself is “the resurrection and the life”. Whoever believes in him will never die. Martha’s responses to Jesus have been very impressive, and now she tops them all: “I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come into this world.” That statement sounds very impressive – no one has referred to Jesus in these terms before. Unfortunately Martha’s profession of faith is not quite good enough. Jesus gives instructions to the people at the tomb to take away the stone covering the opening, and Martha is horrified: “Lord, by now he will smell; this is the fourth day.” So much for Martha’s protestation that she knew that God would do whatever Jesus asked. Clearly she did not think for a moment that this could involve her brother truly coming back to life. In fairness, how could she understand what Jesus was about to do? We’ve already gathered that the faith of the two sisters was quite remarkable for its time, but Jesus’ intended action has no precedents. Martha has said that she believes God will do anything Jesus asks. The statement suggests that she hasn’t fully taken on board Jesus’ full identity and relationship with his Father. Application It would be very unfair of us to think badly of Martha and Mary. They probably would have agreed with what the evangelist tells us that people were saying: “He opened the eyes of the blind man [we heard the story in last Sunday’s Gospel reading], could he not have prevented this man’s death?” When we think of the consequences of what Jesus has done, we can conclude that without Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead, it would be impossible for people to comprehend that Jesus could be raised from death himself, and leave behind his own grave cloths as evidence, in the empty tomb that Jesus himself would vacate on Easter Sunday morning. VESTNIK 2023 | 123 124 | VESTNIK 2023 VESTNIK 2023 | 125 J UDGING By Fr. Steve Ryan, SDB Many young people perceive the Church to be full of judgmental people. This is a major reason the “Nones” give for abandoning churchgoing and any affiliation with the institutional church. A large percentage of teens and young adults believe that the Church is fundamentally judgmental. I know firsthand from my Grade 12 Theology Class that when I teach the moral teachings of the Church regarding life, love, sex and commitment, more than a few of the students judge me to be ignorant and oldfashioned. For many young people the thought is this: • The Church’s biblical view is way too traditional and has had its day. • Now society has moved away from the notions of monogamy, marriage, commitment and even children. Just look at all the television shows and movies. • Church teachings are so far behind the times that to promote them is offensive to many who live differently. • Stop teaching them – you are judging and hating when you do so! I find it kind of ironic that those who label the. Church as a bunch of “judgers” and “haters” for being bold and clear regarding morals in our post-modern culture are themselves pretty vocal in judging and hating. It seems that in today’s world Christians and church leaders are intimidated. We are shy about telling another that they are falling short of the mark regarding morality. To do so, a person would have to have the faith to actually believe that God is the all-knowing Almighty, who has revealed Truths to us, who has given humanity commandments and guidelines to follow for our happiness and holiness – and the courage to state that yes we must obey them. We have too little faith! We don’t teach and preach the revealed Word of God strongly. To do so would 126 | VESTNIK 2023 run us the risk of being labelled “judgmental”. The reason most people in this era are fundamentally repelled by the seeming arrogance of one person or group sitting in judgment of another person or group is because it proclaims a hierarchy of virtue. So what? There is such a hierarchy! All is not lost! There actually is a deep hunger in our young people for living unselfishly and in God’s Light. May they have the humility to see the logic of biblical and traditional morality, and in a spirit of humility may they surrender to God’s Love. The “thirsty” Nones all around us aren’t actually longing for a “no standards” version of church. They are just restless in a cultural malaise. We who are called to preach and teach and witness – let’s be brave and do it. Don’t be intimidated. May the pendulum swing! Heart to Heart - Most Rev. Douglas Crosby THIS SUNDAY IS “SOLIDARITY SUNDAY”, when we make our Lenten offerings to the Canadian Catholic Organization of Development and Peace (CCODP) to benefit programs and projects in the global south. Established by the Canadian Bishops in 1967, many good works have been supported over the years by CCODP. More recently, the organization has accepted the responsibility as Caritas Canada to assist those suffering through natural disasters, when financial assistance is so urgently needed. Parishioners are reminded that $1.00 per day for the 40 days of Lent ($40.00) is a generous Lenten offering. Please do what you can. Ordained a Bishop on September 12, 2022, he served as Auxiliary Bishop in Montreal until his appointment to Toronto. We wish the Archbishop long and happy service as Chief Shepherd of the Archdiocese and head of the Metropolitan Province of Toronto, which includes the Dioceses of Hamilton, St. Catharines, London, and Thunder Bay. VESTNIK 2023 | 127 Predsednik društva sv. Jožefa, Peter Novak, je ob začetku kosila pozdravil vse navzoče z besedami: Good afternoon! Dober dan! Gospod Fr. Drago, dragi gostje, dragi prijatelji, dear friends, ladies and gentlemen. V imenu Slovenskega Društva Svetega Jožefa – dobrodošli na naš letni banket. On behalf of the Slovenian Society of St. Joseph – welcome to our annual St. Joseph Day Banquet. From this point on, I will speak English to try and not mix things up with my broken Slovenian. We last gathered here to celebrate St. Joseph’s Feast Day three years ago, just before we were locked down and the world around us changed. But as I look around the hall today, we are so excited to be back together and continue the traditions here at St. Gregory the Great. At this, our annual banquet we celebrate St. Joseph’s Feast day. This year is very special, as we are all together again, and celebrating St. Joseph on the actual Feast Day which is on March 19. Celebrating St. Joseph’s Feast Day has been a long standing tradition in Slovenia and in Canada, as he is the patron saint of our society. As we celebrate this special day, we extend a happy name day to all the Josephs and Josephines, Jožetom Joškotom in Jožicam (Pepcam). Our gathering today will include a nice meal, being together with family and friends to enjoy this Sunday afternoon. When dessert is being served, we will have some door prizes, and give everyone a chance to take home the flowers that are on the table. All profits from this banquet will go back to our Parish, St. Gregory the Great. 128 | VESTNIK 2023 We will have some very nice ladies coming around after they eat, to sell some 50/50 tickets (1 for $5 or 3 for $10). Again, the money raised from the 50/50 will go back to St. Gregory the Great. Father Drago has prepared a nice slide show to enjoy during lunch which will include some pictures of our St. Joseph activities since the last time we were together in March 2020. At this time, I would like to call upon Father Drago to lead us in prayer. As we pray, let us remember our deceased members, who we know are with us in spirit. Po kosilu je Peter dodal naslednje: I would to first thank our cook Nancy, her staff and serving crew for providing us a nice traditional lunch. I would to also thank the Parish Council including Tony Horvat for looking after the bar not just today, but for so many years in the past. And of course thank you to our bartenders Tom Miklavčič and Franci Škerl who made sure nobody was thirsty. Thank you Fr. Drago for taking the time to prepare the slide show for us to enjoy and all your dedicated work to help with our banquet, and all the support that you provide to our parish, groups and other clubs that surround St. Gregory the Great. I would like to thank the Ferenčak family for helping us set up the hall. I would like to thank the St. Joseph Society board which include Dan Demšar, Frank Novak and Milan Ferletič. We will try and do our best to keep our traditions going as long as our members and community support us. We will now do our draw for the door prizes, 50/50 raffle and chance to take home the flowers. As we conclude our banquet, I would ask for those who can, please stack the chairs at your table if you can, and if you can’t no problem. Thank you all for coming, enjoy the rest of your day and we hope to see everyone again next year.
