Habat Season’s Greetings It is ten years since our father died. We would like to share the following in remembrance. William Joseph Kennick was born in Cleveland on July 28, 1896, and was raised on E. 63rd Street. He was an extraordinarily honest boy, and also a very intelligent, inquisitive person. He studied hard, and after graduating from St. Vitus, he was the first from the neighborhood to find his way to East High School. He then went on to the University of Michigan, Harvard University, and Ohio State, earning his B.A., M.A., and LL.B. degrees. It appears he was the first from the neighborhood to earn a law degree, although soon after, several of his friends did the same. He felt that the recent 1890s immigrant status of the Slovenians put them at a disadvantage in the broader society, and he couldn’t bear to see anyone from the neighborhood hoodwinked or taken advantage of in any way. One of his goals in going to law school was to be in a position to better “protect the interests of the Slovenians.” Always mindful of the Slovenians as a group, he worked to have the nationality groups of Cleveland fairly represented as school teachers in their own ethnic districts, as well as across other school districts. He worked toward the achievement of fair disclosure and open record laws in employment practice, so that a job applicant would have access to what was written in his records. Now a century after the Slovenian immigration to the United States, we are very proud and strengthened by the legacy of our father. William Kennick was an intelligent, honest, forthright, persevering, not easily deterred individual who knew right from wrong and lived accordingly. He loved his Slovenian heritage, and on this the 10th anniversary of his death, we share our father’s admiration for this heritage. For years millions of Americans are supplementing their diets with vitamins, minerals and herbs. Many have improved their health without danger of side effects or toxic effects. If on December 15, 1995 the ruling of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) goes into effect, .a number of supplements will no longer be available to the consumer and most will be severely restricted. Manufacturers will no longer be able to publish any information about benefits that supplements can provide. This ruling will take away the sources of information about simple ways to stay healthy or improve one’s health. The FDA ruling will take away yet another right, and that is, to stay healthy for those who choose to do so. It may also hit your wallet in a big way. Between th prescription and the price o the product, a bottle o vitamin supplements may en< costing you up to a $100 if yoi need to have it. Congressman Richardsot and Senator Hatch have sponsored bills that will protec. your right to purchase dietan supplements. Write to your Congressman and Senator and encourage them to join and co-sponsor House Bili H.R. 1709 and Senators to sponsor S.784, the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Acts of 1993. Because the more a travel agent knows about a destination, the better he or she can sell a destination... travel agents are hustled to as many hotels, cruise ships, restaurants, and attractions as possible in the shortest period of time. Both travel agents and travelers benefit from fam trips because there is no substitute for first-hand experience in the business of travel. Today, we’re on our way to Rio de Janeiro with Mary from Euclid travel. Mary embarked upon her trip with some trepidation. After all, she had never been out of the country, nor on such a long flight alone. Varig Brazilian Airlines allayed her apprehension. Mary flew from JFK in New York to Rio non-stop amid luxury that is commonplace aboard international flights. Varig has been flying the skies of Brazil since 1927; their stan-dars of excellence is acknowledged world-wide and they are the premier airline serving Central and South America. The Epicurean menu and impeccable service alone help the in-flight time pass quickly. Upon arrival in Rio, customs moved very quickly, and transportation to the Hotel Inter-Continental was efficiently handled. A modern hotel, with tasteful decor, the Inter-Continental boasts five restaurants — featuring native and international cuisine — a large outdoor swimming pool with swim-up bar disco complete with lasar light system and the “hottest” music, and an exercise room. Rio is an internationaPcity — both sophisticated and beautiful, with a colorful culture, extravagant beauty, and a host of natural attractions. One of Rio’s highlights is Corcovado,- offering a panoramic view of the sea and mountain and crowned by a lighted statue of Christ the Redeemer. Rio is linked to the rest of the world by two major airports, with Rio De Janeiro International Airport being the most technically advanced in the world. Her people are friendly, her colors vibrant, her heritage strong and omnipresent. Bio, boasting the largest urban forest in the world is nestled between the mountains and the ocean. Tropical forest preserves, waterfalls, beaches, tropical birds, sea and other sports beckon visitors to Rio. Founded in 1 565, Rio preserves its unique and beautiful Portuguese colonial architecture. Rio boasts 44 museums and 283 libraries, cinemas and galleries to tempt all manner of exploration. And, of course, there is the world famous Rio carnival — four days and nights each year where thousands of people congregate in the streeets to celebrate samba. Rio’s night life is abundant and varied. And, as one of the main financial capitals in South America, Rio has her serious side. Her well-structured network of hotels and convention centers attract thousands to the city; and Rio has the second largest industrial park in the nation. One of the world’s largest ship-building industries is located in Rio, as well as a variety of leaders in computer manufacturing, fishing, fashion, and gemstone^ — most every gemstone om diamonds to rubies to pals are mined in Brazil. Holiday Fitness Crunch-Time When the holiday time-crunch its, it’s possible to take a mini-vacation from your usual workouts without compromising your fitness gains. The trick is to cut back on the frequency or length of your workouts, but not cut them out completely. On the days when you can squeeze in a session, be sure to maintain your usual level of intensity. For example, if you routinely walk one hour five days a week, it’s okay to cut back to two shorter sessions per week for a few weeks — as long as you maintain your usual speed. But remember: while these abbreviated workouts may keep you fit, they won’t burn as many calories. So watch what you eat, or you could get a Christmas gift you really don’t want: extra pounds. He removed from the coat a small cross and candle, took °ut a medium sized prayer hook with frayed pages, showing its usage and age, and put over his shoulders a purple stoJe. ': ,, With a sign of the cross and 'n a humble but reverend manner he began with ‘V imeno Očeta, in Sina, in Svetega Duha...” And in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit the end and beginning for Stara Mama had come full circle with only the blessings °f this parish priest, her grandson, and a silent room. The right markers were there f°r Stara Mama and the faithfully departed. ~~ End of Chapter III — Chapter IV (< THE old timers Reseda materinja, f v sonce gleda vrh gora... i moja draga domačija, otroških sanj si melodija...” The words of my mother ttand) like the sun piercing the nountaintops. My lovely Homeland to me, like a child’s ream you are a melody to me... The elevator had an air of silence. John and Father Gralc both stared into the vacant space with only the intruding •ght to act as a comforting guide. They walked out to the main lobby of the St. Mary’s Hospital. John,” said Father Gralc as e reached into his coat Pocket, ‘‘how about if you a^N * meet ^°r a ^ew minutes Maria’s restaurant off East st Street. You still know ere the place is, don’t you?" tha?^n’s face had the smirk, small deceptive smile that ^ ^ber Gralc his answer. r Sure.” said John, “I still cou)ember the P|ace- How pi d 1 forget it. It’s the first Ce 1 got a job. And no less thanks to you and Stara Mama for pestering old man Vendic about a part-time job for me. ‘‘Talk about a smooth talker. I never knew Vendic was so gullible about all that nonsense you gave him. Telling him that at least he could control me by working inside rather than just hanging out in front of his place.” ‘‘Well, then it’s settled. We’ll meet in 10 minutes.” John waited by the front lobby desk as Father Gralc left through the sliding doors toward the parking lot. John saw that the volunteer was nowhere to be found. All he could see over his right shoulder was the hospital security. The guard was still reading the paper. Boy, John thought to himself, Stara Mama was right: they are stupid. But at least they can read. The sarcasm ran through John’s brain. “Zbadljivost,” as they say in Slovenian. John pulled his beige collar to his neck, took out his car keys and headed through the sliding doors and into the hospital parking lot. The ’88 four-door Pontiac had been a faithful companion for John, allowing him to travel about and around the 50 states over the past 15 years. It was like the surrounding area: showing its age but refusing to die. John started the car and slowly it made its way down East 23rd Street. The distance of East 23rd Street running south to north was approximately three miles but within these three miles would be little worlds that clung unto themselves without any thought to time and change. From East 23rd Street until East 36th Street would be the section of town referred to as “Little Chinatown.” The population was mainly Asiatic but not large in the sense of other cities like New York or San Francisco. The Chinese immigrants were both of yesteryear and today. A mixture of the old and the new. Some settled and others were newer immigrants. But the desire was the same. Land of opportunity. Purchase land and a house. Work many hours and in honor of the family. But like other immigrants, their children sought life in the suburbs and not to constantly live like their forefathers. A bit further ahead and just past East 36th Street was the old Polish section of town referred to as “Cabbage Town” due to the amount of cabbage and rolled cabbage leaves stuffed with ground meat that these early Polish immigrants ate as a stable food product on many a night. But the section had changed over the past few decades and was mainly a center for the recently arriving or settled Puerto Ricans. The church services were mixed with a smattering of Polish, Spanish, and English. (To be continued) Over 300 attend St. Vitus St. Nicholas program While many inner city Catholic parishes have been struggling to remain viable and afloat across the United States, there is reason to rejoice when a parish such as St. Vitus remains committed to its original mission and at the same time accommodate the overall needs of the larger community in northeast Ohio. Over the past weekend no less than five events were held on the parish grounds of this first and oldest American Slovenian Catholic parish in the state of Ohio and the diocese of Cleveland. During the past weekend the following events occurred: bingo Friday; Catholic Order of Foresters 250 Club event (Saturday); Altar and Rosary Society Meeting and Christmas Party (Sunday); Christ The King Lodge (KSKJ) Annual Christmas Party (Sunday); and the annual “Miklavževanje’’ (St. Nicholas) play performed and sponsored by the St. Vitus Slovenian Language School. Of all the events held over the past weekend it is the annual St. Nicholas performance that clearly states the values em- bodied in the Slovenian culture and transplanted to the USA where religion, dramatic arts, love of language, and strong family ties are intertwined and publicly displayed for the general community-at-large. It is a compliment to the parish staff, teachers, students, parents, and friends of the St. Vitus Slovenian Language School that enables such a performance to occur on an annual basis. The scenery, costumes, rehearsals, choreography, printing of booklets, food preparation, and so many other details that needed attention were not lost on the primary purpose of “sv. Miklavž.” That is, to give children the opportunity to use drama to express themselves in a positive manner with the guidance and support of adults. Well over 300 persons attended the event and they were not disappointed. The performance started with the “Izgubljene Zvezdice” (The Lost Stars). These three stars became lost from the heavens only to meet with “Veter” (The Wind), the “Smreke” (Pine Trees) and “Snežinke” (Snowflakes). After this encounter angels appeared to provide direction for the lost stars. Lucifer and the devils sought to distract the angels from their work only to encounter and engage in a battle with the Archangels. The Archangels were victorious in battle. St. Nicholas was greeted with warm applause. His words to pray, remain obedient and remain faithful to the church and their culture were well noted by the children. The St. Vitus Slovenian Language School takes this opportunity to thank the many parents, friends, and supporters who in one manner or another provided their time and/or talents to make this play a reality. The school is also thankful for the $500 donation by the American Slovenian Catholic Union (KSKJ) for the purposes of continuing to update and upgrade the school’s curriculum. We wish all a blessed, peaceful and happy Christmas and Happy New Year. (S.K.) By that I mean the Slovenian National Home on St. Clair held its 4th annual “Jam Session’ on Wednesday, November 24th. Everyone attending had a great time singing and dancing to the various Button Box players such as the Lake Erie Button Box Club, Rudy Bukovec’s “Homesteaders” and others. Our own Ed Kenik stepped up to the bandstand and sang a few songs with everybody joining in. We were pleasantly surprised to see America’s Polka King Frankie Yankovic and Canada’s Polka King Walter Ostanek. People came in from different states such as Illinois, Indiana, Wyoming, Missouri, Minnesota, Califor- nia, Arizona plus an Ostanek bus load from Canada and upstate New York. A lot of people came in from many parts of Ohio as well. The Board of Directors of the Slovenian National Home would like to thank everyone who participated in making this an enjoyable night to remember. —Sylvia Plymesser Holy Name Family Day The St. Vitus Holy Name Society will sponsor its annual Family Day which will be held on Sunday, December 12. It will begin with corporate Mass and Communion at the 8 a.m. Mass. Following Mass, coffee and doughnuts will be served in the auditorium. Mr. Greg Payne, public information officer for the County Engineer, will then narrate a slide presentation titled, “The First One Hundred Years of Engineering and Architecture in Cuyahoga County, 1836-1936.” “We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.” —Franklin D. Here, are some interesting facts, a few “sweet feet” tips: • Feet have more sweat glands than any other part of the body — about 250,000, or 2,600 per square inch! • Feet produce more than a half-pint of perspiration per day. When perspiration mixes with bacteria, foot odor occurs. • Avoid synthetic-material shoes, which don’t let feet breathe, increasing moisture buildup. • Let shoes dry out between wearings. • Try deodorizing foot powders, sprays, and insoles like Odor Attackers Insoles (they make walking more comfortable, too). Ok, 1 HAPPY NEW YEAR Ben Kusmin, a Johns Hopkins undergraduate student, spent six weeks last summer in paid engineering and research positions in Austria and Slovenia through an internship exchange program launched last year by the Whiting School of Engineering. The program’s goal, says coordinator Jack Fisher, is to expose Hopkins students to engineering practices in an international setting. Participants set out armed with three weeks of intensive German or Slovenian language study. Kusman was assigned to .work at Styria’s Water Power and Electricity, Inc., in the Austrian village of Pernegg. He says he was amazed by the fact each employee was well-versed in every facet of plant operation. In Slovenia, Jennifer Synowczynski witnessed a country in transition from a socialist to a market economy. The researchers she worked with at Slovenia’s University of Maribor and at Ljubljana’s Institute for Metals and Technology had just begun to seek private funding through grants, since they could no longer rely solely on the government. “I was most impressed by their level of technology,” says the materials science major. “I had always thought of Slovenia as a Third World nation.” This fall, as part of the program’s reciprocal agreement, Johns Hopkins hosted its first group of Austrian and Slovenian engineering students. (( Then these national leaders” have the audacity to tell us that they’re doing their Very best to fight deficits. The Clinton Administration expects a nearly $300 billion shortfall this year, but it likely Jill be closer to $400 billion. ret our “leaders” still give avvay money. he latest measure calls for billion in new appropria-d10ns and $1.6 billion to be rawn frorn unuseci defense udgets. Of the entire PacEage, $2.6 billion will go to 0ris Yeltsin’s government in «nssia. We used to Send money to Moscow to buy friendship with communists; now we’re sending money to buy friendship with ex-communists — even though we don’t have the money to send. The national debt itself is $4.5 trillion; the interest payment alone to service that debt is $300 billion per year. That means every taxpayer owes close to $2,400 a year just for interest on the accumulated debt. This massive debt, brought on in large measure by 50 years of foreign aid, is partly to blame for America’s economic slowdown. If we didn’t have to service the debt or pay for foreign aid itself, government could cut taxes, and we could create jobs and industries in America with our money. Instead, our high taxes are wasted on governments — here and abroad. Foreign aid is unconstitutional, and that alone is sufficient reason to end it. But even if it were permitted, right now we don’t have the money to give away. Therefore, let’s urge Congress to end all foreign aid. Joseph M. Postopek še teče, vendar je jasno, da večina poslancev kaže naklonjenost odpravljanju dvojnega državljanstva. Iz poročila v Slovencu L decembra naslednji citati: »Nasprotovali so mu (predlog zakona, op. ur.) predvsem poslanci ZLSD (bivši komunisti, op. ur.) in LDS. H P° sprejetju omenjenega zakona bo Sloveni-'ja povprašala svoje~hoVe državljane, ah sO se pripravljeni odpovedati svoji prejšnji domlT" vini in ostati izključno slovenski državljani. V šestih mesecih bodo ti morali sporočiti, kateri domovini bodo ostali zvesti, sicer.jih bo Slovenija obravnavala kot tuje državljane. To ne more biti nikakršno zapostavljanje. ... Kje in kako je bil rojen Kristus, vemo. Lukov evangelij nam poroča o tem: porodila je sina prvorojenca, ga povila v plenice in položila v jasli, ker zanju ni bilo prostora v hiši. V Ljubljani je živel skozi otroška leta, skozi prvo in nato še drugo svetovno vojno, slednjo z namečkom komunistične revolucije. Zavednemu in delavnemu Slovencu v Ameriki, Lojzetu Galiču, prijateljsko čestitamo k njegovemu 85. rojstnemu prazniku in želimo, da mu Bog nakloni še mnogo let zdravega življenja in veselih uric v veselje njegove dobre žene Frances, sorodnikov in prijateljev. Prijatelji K tem prisrčnim čestitkam se pridružujem urednik A.D. teh zadnjih štirinajst let in še nekaj mesecev, kakor številni bralci g. Petra v središču Skokieja, ob 11. uri dop., a njegovo truplo bo prepeljano v Science Center, Loyola University. 16) V BLAG SPOMIN PRVE OBLETNICE SMRTI NAŠE MAME, STARE MAME, PRASTARE MAME, TAŠČE, SESTRE in TETE Ne en dih! Anton Z., Slava Pust, Olga Petek, Roži Selan sin in hčerke z družinami in ostalo sorodstvo v Ameriki, Kanadi in Sloveniji. Cleveland, Ohio, 9. decembra 1993. Tako nam odhajajo... NEW YORK, NY - Iz zadnjih nekaj mojih kroniških zapisov sv. In ta mož, zelo dober krojač, je bil v svojem zakonu oče dvanajstih otrok. Deset je bilo hčera in dva sinova. Sinova nista dočakala očetove starosti preko devetdesetih let, dočim večina hčera jih je. Iz Domžal so ljudje kaj kmalu, še pred prvo svetovno vojno, šli po svetu. Posebno v Ameriko. Cirila in sploh vse njujorške slovenske srenje. 16) Ob 30. obletnici smrti|nsgr. Kranjčani so ga poimenovali »Škerbčev most«. Vzorno je vzdrževal in prenavljal svetišča in cerkveno premoženje. 15) in vendar še vedno isti: krek, krek, krek. Rev. Jože Vogrin Tako nam odhajajo (nadaljevanje s str. Zasedli so vse pomembne stavbe. Zahtevali so izpraznitev konvikta in še nekatere druge prostore. Franci Vrhunc, papeški prelat in nadškofijski kancler, in tamkajšnja duhovščina. G. dr. V spomin in poklon vsem žrtvam so spregovorili navzočim ing. Davorin Žitnik, dr. Ljubo Sire, ga. S. Pestotnik in pisec teh vrstic. člen evropske konvencije o človekovih pravicah in 14. člen pakta o človekovih pravicah in temeljnih svoboščinah. 18) Anton M. Dr. in Mrs. MAX RAK ŽELITA SVOJIM PA CIENTOM IN PRIJA TELJEM VESEL BOŽIČ IN SREČNO NOVO LETO! Misijonarju Jožetu Šomenu v Zaire smo poslali $720 preko prokuratorja lazaristov v Belgiji, kot on vedno sam želi. Od MZA za vse $500, od Štefana Novaka v Scarboroughju $200, in K.K. v Clevelandu $20. G. Novaka v molitev priporočamo v njegovi bolezni.
