CAMPAIGN ON FOR A SLOVENIAN CHAPEL IN THE NATIONAL SHRINE IN WASHINGTON, D. C.
GENERAL INFORMATION ON THE SHRINE
The Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is the largest Catholic Church in the United States; the second largest church in the United States; and one of the seven largest churches in the world. It was constructed for the specific purpose of serving as the National Shrine of the Catholic Church in this nation.
Within the scope of this purpose, special chapels have been set aside as memorials to contributions that various ethnic groups and religious orders have made to the development of the Catholic Church and culture in the United States.
Of the chapels donated by ethnic groups (Polish, Lithuanian, Slovak, Mexican-American, Croatian) all except one (Slovenian) have either been built or are being built.
More than one million people from all over the world tour or visit the Shrine each year. Close to 15,000 attend Mass there each Sunday.
Church dignitaries from all the world make the Shrine a focal point of their visit to Washington. Many, including Archbishop Pogačnik, offer Mass in its many chapels or in the upper church for special occasions.
The location of the Shrine is most fitting—on the campus of Ihe Catholic University of America.
SPECIFIC INFORMATION REGARDING THE SLOVENIAN CHAPEL
The chapel will be approximately 300 square 1’eet in size.
It will serve as a permanent place of recognition and honor in the Nation’s Capital for the Slovenian Americans all over the United States.
Located on the south side of Memorial Hall from whence all tours of the Shrine originate, the chapel would not only be seen by the greatest number of visitors but will also help to make the Slovenian people and culture better known and recognized.
The Shrine is not a parish; therefore chapels in the Shrine are memorial chapels and not national parishes. Slovenian priests visiting in Washington will be welcome to offer Mass there privately or for any visiting group.
FINANCIAL AND CONTRACTUAL DETAILS:
The donation for the proposed area is a one-time contribution of $70,000. Payment can be made in 2 or 3 installments, but any balance must be paid before the completion of the chapel. This offering includes everything—from the architect’s first drawing to the candles on I lie altar, including permanent maintenance of the chapel.

Usually two years elapse from the signing of the con tract to the completion of the chapel. This will give us time to plan for the dedication ceremonies which it is hoped many of you will be able to attend—to see the fruits of your efforts.
Maginnis, Walsh, and Kennedy, Shrine Architects, will have the final right of approval. They will be in consultation with us so that our major wishes can be incorporated in the design. The chapel will reflect the highlights of the religious history of the Slovenian people both in Slovenia and the United States arranged around the central figure of Our Lady of Brezje to whom the chapel will be dedicated.

REPORT OF FIRST CHAPEL COMMITTEE
Special meeting was called in Cleveland October 13, 1967 at St. Vitus auditorium in regards to the campaign for the Slovenian Chapel in the National Shrine in the Immaculate Conception Church in Washington, D. C.
Represented were officers and members of various organizations and invidiuals.
Three guests were present, Father Blatnik from Patterson, N. J., Miss Florence Gregorič and Bogomir Cholcel of Washington, D. C. All three spoke and gave all details pertaining to the Shrine.
Miss Gregorič also showed slides of the different chapels that are already completed. There is only one more space left and this one has been reserved two years for the Slovenians of America. Now if we do not act immediately on this project we will lose it as another party in Philadelphia is waiting for it and has the money already to pay for it.
All present were in favor we go ahead with this drive as it will be a memorial to all the Slovenians in America and we should be represented.
This goal will not be hard to achieve if we all help and cooperate!
Proposed and decided that Cleveland, Ohio which has the largest Sloveian settlement in America will be the headquarters, all donations to be sent to the Secretary:

QUEST FOR HAPPINESS
To be happy here — and hereafter — to live a well-balanced life — put God uppermost in your life. Listen to Christ’s formula: ‘‘Love the Lord your God with your whole heart, your whole mind, your whole soul, and all your strength; and love your neighbor as you yourself.” Christ’s formula. None better. He should know.
Balanced living is being in love — in love with God and with others out of love for God. The answer to all living is love. But what we love makes 'a difference. If we love evil, we will be damned. If we love what God loves, the souls of men will be saved. So the answer is to direct our love into the right channel.
Someone once said, “men divide themselves into four classes: 1. Those who never do what they are told — always less; 2. those who will do what they are told — but no more; 3. those who will do things without being told; and 4. those who will inspire others and make them do things. It is up to you.” I think everyone can be a man
or woman of the fourth class. You can inspire others and make them do things. How? You can inspire them with the love for others you show in your life. They can’t but recognize the selflessness about your life. And being selfless, you will radiate happiness, and this will make others want to do things as you are doing. No other secret than this: love others out of love for Christ. And why? Because everyone we meet is Christ. He identifies with them. He says: “Whatever you do to anyone, even to the least of my people, you did to me.”
Certainly Christ wouldn’t give a formula for happiness that would be impossible for anyone to achieve. So he made it possible for you and for me and for everyone to follow the example He showed us on earth — His universal and individual love. Love all and love each. Forget, the face, the race, the color, the creed. Love everyone. Christ wants us to realize that the measure of our love for Him is calculated by the love we have for others. Find Him in every person you meet, love Him in every person you meet, and you will be the happiest person alive. This is the cinch formula for happiness.
ACTIVITIES
NOV. 9th PENNY SOCIAL
No. 2, Chicago, III. Our branch will meet for a wonderful social and games party on Nov. 9th at the Lower Hall of St. Stephen’s. All members and friends are cordially invited to attend. Bring along a neighbor, relative of someone you think will enjoy the fun. The more the merrier, you know! Refreshments will be served and all the proceeds are for our juvenile Christmas Party December 37th at 2 30 p.m. at St. Stephen Hall, West 22nd Place and Wolcott.
The morning of Dec. 17th we will have our annual Commemorative Mass for living and deceased members of Br. 2 at St. Stephen church at 8 a.m. Please try to attend. We will sit together at the front of the church.
So, keep in mind the Nov. 9th party and Dec. 17 mass and Christmas party for juniors. Best wishes for a very happy holiday to all.

No. 12, Milwaukee, Wis. — The
first meeting held at our new place, the Lily Club, brought several more in attendance. Let’s keep it up!
The main topic of discussion was our Forty-Year Anniversary Celebration of October 29, 19C7. The letter from our State President dated September 14, 1967 was read and because of our former plans having to be changed at such a late date, there was a lot of opposition voiced especially since it was known last spring of our plans; but Mrs. Plesko finally succeeded in talking the membership into going along with it and hold our State Convention instead of the card party.
The card party which was originally scheduled on that day, will be postponed to Sunday, November 19, 19G7, and will be held at the Lily Club.
The meeting was closed, and fol-
lowed with cake and coffee, and the membership sang “Happy Birthday” to me, and I was very pleased. Thank you!
Let’s not forget the card party to be held on November 19, 1967 at the Lily Club on South 2nd and W. National Ave., and let’s bring in some new members, too. Welcome to new member, Jenny Young!
Mary Dezman
No. 13, San Francisco, Cal. — Our
September meeting night and Social was a huge success due to the effort on the part of the tremendous committee, Rose Bianco, Ruth Zwys-sig, Doris Lovrin, and Katie Plut, and of course I had a hand too. We had Povatica, Turkey, Ham, Potato Salad, Jello Salad (donated by Ruth Zwyssig) and all the trimmings. Did you miss it? Now you see we have a wonderful time and good food was served; so, be sure to attend the various functions of your branch and become an active part of all the social functions. Mrs. Donat and her very nice husband attended and they come from the San Jose area! How about you folks close to home?
November month will be our annual breakfast with Mass at the Church of the Nativity with breakfast to follow at the Jack Tar Hotel. This will make it easy for those who do not drive to come as all you have to do is get on the 47 Bus after church and ride about 8 blocks toward Geary and the hotel is right on Van Ness St. See you there, I hope. —• Virginia Sustarich is Chairlady of the day. Lots of exciting things are planned for our Breakfast Zveza Day.
It was quite an honor for me when one of the largest papers on the West Coast, “The Examiner,” had a full page article on my cooking, with pictures and all. Helen Civelli Brown the food consultant and Editor for the Household Column came to my home with her photographer land took pictures while I made Pe-
roshki, I baked Povatica and then served lunch.
Needless to say, the Povatica was a real hit I was delighted with the wonderful article written by Helen Civelli Brown; it was quite a tribute to me. I always felt the only time my name would be in the paper would be when I died, so it is quite a nice thing to have such an honor. The recipes were in the paper along with the article and I received numerous congratulations from many people who were proud to see our native dish receive such acclaim.
Poldi Ranh, a former member of Zveza, passed away. She will be missed by her many friends and family. Since the death of her lovely daughter Josephine Damonte, Poldi simply lost the zest for life and one night she just went to sleep and God took her HOME to be with Josie.
Ladies, remember attend the various functions of your branch and in this way your Society will hold much more interest or you.

A wonderful report was given by Margiaret Fager and Rose Scoff on their return from the Convention. They ask your support to make San Francisco a bigger and better branch by enrolling at least one member per person during the coming year.

No. 14, Euclid, O. — Well, here we are into the fall season already and Christmas will be here before we know it. Our October meeting was very well attended. We discussed final preparations for our card party, and after other order of business, we adjourned to our social hour, which I’m sure all the ladies enjoyed. It was gratifying to see so many members of our branch attend the Ohio State Convention at Barberton, Sept.
Congratulations, Congressman Blatnik!
Sept. 16th was the day set aside by the friends and colleagues of U-nited States Congressman, John A. Blatnik of Minnesota, to celebrate his Silver Anniversary in public office. The gala Testimonial Banquet held at the Arena-Auditorium in Duluth brought out the many facets of the life and career of this exceptional statesman and representative of the 8th Congressional District of Minnesota in which district live the Slovenian people of the Mesabi Iron Range communities.
Congressman Blatnik has always been a “favorite son” of our people in Minnesota because they have watched him grow and reach a stature of high and meaningful accomplishment. He has dedicated himself to them and over 4,000 people came to pay their personal tribute to the man they love and respect. It was especially interesting to read of the large group attending the banquet from the Chisholm area, who rode the first passenger train in 20 years to depart from Chisholm. This train was filled with the “old-timers” and youngsters of succeeding generations who had to be present in Duluth — to share the pride they felt with other Blatnik-ites!
As a figure of national prominence, Congressman Blatnik has never slighted his own heritage but has dignified the simple, hard-working people of his ancestry by his own words and deeds. In and out of Minnesota he is a man of honor and distinction. We salute him and offer our sincere congratulations and wishes for a future greater than the past!	Editor
24th, and so many more attended the dinner the ladies of Br. 6 in Barberton prepared for us which was very delicious. Congratulations to Br. 6 on their 40th anniversary. A short program followed the dinner which was very entertaining. I must say we had a few jolly people on the bus which made the trip quite enjoyable.
We are sorry to hear that Antonia Tanko is confined to Charity Hospital after a fall in which she hurt herself quite seriously. We wish her a speedy recovery and to all other ill members. Thanks a million to the following ladies who donated to our treasury, goodtime and sunshine clubs: Rose Rupert, Mary Kirchner, Frances Plevnik and Frances Globokar.
Our condolences go to the family of Mary Gerl who passed away Sept. 18th at the age of 81. Mary Gerl was one of our pioneer members. May she rest in peace.

Supreme President’s Message
NEW ERA CAMPAIGN
With cold weather here and all activities resuming again, we are scouting around for new members. I have a suggestion for eacli one of you members. It would be nice of you to present your branch a new member at your December meeting and Christmas Party. How about it? At least, try!
Elections of branch officers are held in December. Many branches have difficulty in getting members to take office and much time is lost. At the last convention it was decided that the president of every respective branch shall appoint a nominating committee of three members in the month of November. This nominating committee will have ready a slate of officers for election at the December meeting.
Congratulations to Br. 15, Newburgh, Ohio who will be celebrating their 40th Anniversary on November 7, 1907. This branch was organized on Nov. 7, 1927 by M. Planinšek and P. Supan.
OHIO AND MICHIGAN STATE CONVENTION
It was held on September 24th at Barberton, Ohio by Branch 6 in conjuction with their 40th anniversary.
The meeting had a late start due to the fact that we all got lost, including the Cleveland bus. Barberton is a city close to Akron, “The Rubber City” but very hard to find because there are not enough Barberton signs. Cleveland passengers did not mind one bit as they had a hilarious time on the bus singing and enjoying the accordian of Mr. Vogrin who kept on playing to Barberton and all the way back home.
State president, Mary Bostian, opened the meeting at 2:30 p. m. with prayer. All branches gave their reports which were all very good and interesting and especially the one from Branch 10. Sophie Magjana reported in her usual happy smiling way the following: “Pri naših sejah je pa tako, če so sklede in glazki polne je vse fein, ampak če pa nas zebe in so mize prazne, pa gremo kar hitro domov.” Every one roared.
I was very impressed to see such a large representation and especially happy to see three newcomers, namely, Br. 51 of Kenmore, Ohio, Br. 49, Noble, Ohio and 5 members from Br. 105 all the way from Detroit, Mich, which was the furtherest distance of any branch.
State Conventions certainly are growing. It is very important that they be held every year and especially after the National Convention. Here officers and members who are not delegates at a National Convention can take home all new issues and ideas which have been approved at the convention and relate them to their respective Branch. Meeting was adjourned at 4 p. m. and salutations to State President Mary Bostian fo a job well done.
The Banquet was held at 4:30 p. m. with Father Praznik saying grace. The meal was delicious and served to over 300 people. After the banquet, a short program was held. Our newly-organized Cleveland Choral group rendered two songs under the direction of Mr. Frank Gorensek. They sang beautifully considering they had only four pratice sessions. Great applause was given them by the audience and already they have an invitation form Father Praznik to go back to Barberton to perform on Slovenian night which will be held next year at his parish. After the program, all guests were eligible to win beautiful door prizes and about twenty five guests were lucky.
Salutations to President, Jeanette Killoran and her committee on a job very well done. To all who attended was a day that will long be remembered. Thank you, Barberton.
Reports that I have received on State Conventions held in Minnesota, Colorado and Pittsburgh have been also very good with large attendances and successful meetings. You all will be able to read of them in this month’s Zarja reported by the State Presidents.
Testimonial Dinner honoring Congressman John A. Blatnik of Minnesota
A testimonial dinner was held in Duluth, Minnesota honoring Congressman John Blatnik of Minnesota on September 16th in tribute to his 25 years of faithful service in national office. On behalf of all members of Slovenian Women’s Union, I sent him a congratulatory telegram. May he have continued success and a rewarding public life.
Thanksgiving Day will be observed on November 23rd. On this day we all give thanks to Almighty God for the health and abundance that we had cherished the past year. Have a nice Thanksgiving!
Happy Birthday to our Secretary, Albina Novak, and to all November members and speedy recovery to all who are on the sick list.

No. 20, Joliet, III. — The month of November is dedicated to the Poor Souls in Purgatory. Let us remember all our members who have passed a-way since last year, as many of them were with us not long ago; we attended the meetings together and other places of interest. Now they are gone. May they rest in peace! At this time I also remember my dear mother, Mary Setina, who died so suddenly on Oct. 25th, 30 years ago. She will never be forgotten in our hearts, for she too was very active for the branch and parish.
Our first meeting this fall season took place Sept. 17th. at which time our president called the names of our three members who have passed la-way in the meantime. They were, Mrs. Barbara Kobe, Mrs. Veronica Stimac, and Mrs. Jean Tezak. The members stood in silent prayer for their souls. Later the president spoke of their activities and good deeds during their life. May they all rest in peace.
It was also reported that our long time member, Mrs. Amalia Plese of 1800 N. Hickory is still confined in bed for many years. She is taken care of by her family. Also Mrs. Jennie Bambich from N. Hickory St. ill for several weeks is at home and Miss Katherine Butiala who has been confined for months at St. Joseph Hospital has been placed in the Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital at 1401 So. California ave., Chicago, 111. 60608. We wish all those who are ill the very quickest way to health, and members, if you find time send them a card with good wishes, that will help them to pass time during the days they are shut in This year is fast coming to a close. Members, you are urged to come to our meetings and take care of your dues. It is not a safe and proper way to be in arrears, as life is shorter then you think and if you are all paid up, you and your family have nothing to worry at a time when you too will be on this fatal list.

No. 20, S.W.U. Bowling News. —
After three weeks of bowling, we find Northwest Recreation Club and American Slovenian Home tied for first place with 7 wins and 2 losses. On Northwest Recreation Club we have Marilyn Nemanich, Lil Anderson, Mary Lou Bluth, Millie Ellena and Mitzi Mrozek, captain. On the American Slovenian Home team, are Ann Kobe, Bernice Suski, Virginia Guertin, Mary Rezick and captain Jo Mlakar.

Chicago S.W.U, bowling league ended its first month with a perennial underdog, Wagner’s Bakery, rising to the top of the standings. This must be their year!
During the month of September, they managed to compile a record of
11	wins and 4 losses. Close behind, with a 10-5 record, are three teams tied for second place: Reliance Federal, Zefran Funeral Home and St. Paul Federal.
Everybody seems to be setting their sights on that magical 200 game. Five bowlers managed to reach it in September: A. Hozzian, 231; G. Schiffler, 20 3; A. Scambiat-teria, 203; S. Melissa, 203; E. Statkus, 200.

ANNUAL STATE CONVENTION HELD AT PUEBLO, COLO.
The members ol' branches in Colorado met Sunday, Sept. 10, 1967 at Pueblo, Colo., for the annual State Convention. Honored guest was Supreme Secretary, Albina Novak. We were very happy with her presence.
High Mass was offered at 10:30 a. m. by Rev. Father Gnidica for the living and deceased members of the Slovenian Women’s Union. Members and delegates attended Mass in a body. Rev. Mihelich of Denver was also present for the day.
At 11:30 a. m., the meeting was called to order at the church hall, opened by president of Br. 3, Mary Guzzol. 'Hie meeting was then turned over to the State President, Anna Pachak. Roll Call of delegates was taken.
Frances Simonich represented Br. 3, Christine Konte, delegate of Br. 66, Canon City and Kathryn Starika was from Crested Butte.
Minutes from the 1966 State Convention were read and approved. On the recommendation made at the National Convention to hold yearly state meetings, this delegation approved yearly state meetings for Colorado-Kansas-Missouri and it was so recorded. The delegates then gave their reports, each emphasizing her branch’s interest in working toward progress for the organization.
State President, Mrs. Pachak, read letters of congratulations from Cecelia Adamic, Br. 66, Canon City, Antonia Kastelic, Br. 63, Denver, Mary Tomsic, State President of Pennsylvania, Mary Bostian, State President of Ohio-Michigan and Mary Lenich, secretary of Br. 19, Eveleth.
Greetings were also received from Mary Kolar of Kee-watin, Minn.
A motion was made and carried to hold the next state convention in 1968 in the city of Crested Butte.
Honored guest, Albina Novak, gave a brief talk and congratulated the members of all Colorado branches for their good work. She asked for our continued cooperation and suggested we all heed the motto:	In Unity
and Power we Stand; Without, We Fall.
After the meeting, our honored guest, Albina was invited to speak on the local Radio Program conducted by Mr. John Butkovich. She gave a very inspiring talk in Slovenian and English.
We proceeded to the Banquet held at the Minnequa Club that afternoon. Mr. Butkovich was the Toastmaster. Honored guests were introduced including our distinguished clergymen, city and county officials and officers and delegates of Colorado branches. Again, Aibina was called upon to speak and she told us of the important decisions made at the National Convention. She suggested we continue to encourage young women to join and work together. We all wished that her talk would reach our young people as we agreed that we must work with them to succeed in the future. Dancing was on the program following the banquet and convention such a success and especially, our gratitude goes to Albina Novak for her trip to Colorado and all she did to make it a prominent occasion. No. 24. LaSalle, III. On the day of
our October meeting we had beautiful weather, so there was a nice turn-out of members. It was decided to have a pot luck dinner on November 6th in the evening. We will also elect officers in November instead of in December as then it seems to be too cold and snowy for many members to come out. So, I extended a cordial invitation to all to come to the Nov. 6tli dinner and meeting. Bring along some sort of "dish’ for the table. The committee will take care of preparing the main meat course. You will hear more news later from the local newspaper. I hope you will all attend so we can have a successful meeting.
Hospitalized are Nežka Novlan, Mini Carter, Pali Ksiarzek (Šerman) is recuperating at home. Also in the hospital is our former treasurer, Mary Kastigar and Mary Savnik. We wish them all the best of health.
Mary Struna, a member, and her husband Frank Sr., observed their 57th wedding anniversary in October. Our very best wishes to them, many more years of health and happiness with their family.
Please look up your dues books, members and come to the meeting to straighten this matter — or send book to my home and I will return. Time flies and it will soon be the end of the year.

No. 33, Duluth, Minn. — The state of Minnesota is very beautiful at this time of the year. No artist in the world could paint a picture as the one Mother Nature does thruout our wooded areas in the most gorgeous colors.
A large attendance was present at. our October meeting. Now that summer is over, we shall settle down to winter activities.
At our Nov. 1st meeting nite, we shall have our annual dinner for all our members. These dinners are always a huge success at which time most all the members attend and really enjoy themselves. ROSE KRES-KY is the chairman assisted by her most capable group. We can rest assured it will be good.
Our trip by chartered bus to attend Minnesota Zveza Day at Tower-Soudan on Sept. 10th was very enjoyable, It’s wonderful to meet with our sister members and friends from all parts of the state. The meeting was well attended and the banquet was out of this world. We were honored to have our Editor, Corinne Leskovar representing the Supreme Office, on our bus. Everyone enjoyed her presence and pleasant personality
—	only wished she could of stayed on longer with us.
On Sunday, October 8th, our parish had a fanvell reception for Father James Golden whom we all loved. We shall surely miss him as he was a perfectionist in all ways. We wish him well in his new parish at Hib-bing, Minn. At the same time we will welcome our new pastor, Father Stanley Dolsina. With the co-
operation from the parishioners, we are confident, he, too, will do well and be happy here.
There are no members sick in the hospital at present, but a number of them confined to their homes. May God bless them all and restore their health to them real soon. Greetings to everyone far and near.

No. 34, Soudan, Minn. — The regular monthly meeting of Branch #34 was held in the Parish Hall of St. Martin’s church on Wednesday evening September 20th, with Mrs. John Pahula presiding. All committees reported on their work in connection with Minnesota Day—and all agreed it was a most wonderful day in every way. After all bills were taken care of a motion was made that we donate $200.00 to St. Martin’s church from our Branch and it met with u-nanimous approval.
After the business meeting a social hour was enjoyed and prizes in “500” went to Mrs. Mary Pahula, Mrs. John Zavodnick and Mrs. John Pahula.
“Cootie” winners were Mrs. Ernest Johnson and Mrs. John Bobence. Mrs. Ramon Berg was awarded the attendance prize donated by Mrs. John Zavodnick.
Lunch was served by Mrs. Joseph Gornick and Mrs. Joseph Skala to conclude another delightful meeting. Before adjournment Mrs. John Pahula expressed her thanks to all Branch #34 members for their cooperation and hard work in making Minnesota Day 1967 such a wonderful day!

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE OHIO-MICHIGAN STATE CONVENTIOH
Sept. 24th was a big day for the members of Ohio and Michigan as we held our State Convention in Barberton in conjuction with the 40th anniversary of Br 6. As State President, I am very grateful to the officers and members of Br. G for giving me this opportunity to conduct a most successful State Meeting.
I wish to thank each and every one of you who were present. It was the biggest thrill of all to have representatives of Br. 105, Detroit, Michigan present! This was especially so since they had far to travel. They seemed to enjoy it all, so we were happy too, to extend the hand of friendship to our sisters from Michigan. I am sorry that the visit was so short. Hope some day SOON, we can have a State Convention in Detroit.
I wish to thank the drill team of Br. 50, and the little girls from Barberton, dressed all in white. They looked like angels. They appeared in the tribute to the deceased members. A candle was lit for the deceased members of each branch plus our soldiers in Vietnam. Thanks to Marie Beck for her wonderful secretarial job during the meeting, reading	the	Minutes.
After the meeting,	we	attended	the	banquet held in
honor of the 40th anniversary. They served a wonderful dinner which was enjoyed by all. Our singing director, Mr. Gorensek was very happy that the glee club made such a good showing in spite of the short notice.
I think Jeanette Killoran, pres, of Br. 6, did a wonderful job with all the arrangements. It wasn’t easy, but Jeanette and her committee made it possible to have a wonderful turn out.	All	worked hard	to give their fullest cooperation. I am sure all of	you	are pleased with
the successful outcome.
Compliments to Mr. Lautar, the master of ceremonies for being so gracious, also to Father Praznik. I enjoyed having dinner with them. Our Supreme President, Antonia Turek gave a fine speech, speaking of the Chapel at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception Shrine in Washington.
Br, 6 had two nice members singing a duet, that were Marion Cahoryin and Frances Garadt. A sweet young girl played the piano, Susan Praznik. Michael Judy, a young altar boy at their church played the trumpet and did a wonderful job. I hope he and Susan keep up with their musical studies. Some of our ladies went to Barberton early enough to hear Mass which was in the Slovenian vernacular and with Slovenian singing. They said it couldn’t have been better. A charter bus of 55 members and 6 cars went to Barberton from Cleveland.
Ladies, next year reserve tht date Oct 13th for our big bazaar. It will be at St. Vitus Hall on Glass Ave., in Cleveland. Any branch in Ohio and Michigan has an opportunity to participate. I will be giving you more reports on this in the future. Keep reading. Bless you.

Report of the State President of Ohio-Michigan to the State Convention
Greetings to our Supreme President, Antonia Turek, Supreme Alternate Auditor, Theresa Skur and officers, members and friends. I am delighted to have this opportunity to be here in Barberton, Ohio to conduct the state convention and to help celebrate the 40th anniversary of Br G.
All our 55 bus passengers and others from Cleveland enjoyed our trip here. It is wonderful to see so many from other cities, too. My dear sisters, we have gathered here today for the benefit of our organization, to discuss any problems that are of mutual interest and perhaps, exchange good ideas. Ladies, we must prepare for the future, we must interest the youth. Get them to start visiting the meetings, especially the teen-agers. We must convince them to take office. If you get one started, she will then get her friends to follow. They
must be given the opportunity. As Father Okorn and the Supreme Officers stated at the convention, get young blood into» the organization. I agree with them completely. We must find a way if we want our Zveza to get ahead. I will try to the best of my ability.
The Cleveland combined branches have started with activities, and I hope to see much more progress in the future. We will have our youth bowling this winter on a weekly basis. Of course, you have all heard of our baton twirlers. They have many activities to keep the busy and hapyy such as parades, stage appearances, picnics and parties. The children all enjoy it. This juvenile program has brought in many members, adults as well as youths.
Besides being popular, the S.W.U. is getting to be well-known as many people who have never heard of the or ganizatidn before are shown what we are by the appearances of our juniors. This is a very important accomplishment. These ideas are given to you so that you will see how you can do the same to bring in more interest and public attention to the S.W.U. Therefore, you will assure success and progress for your branches.
Ladies, my dear sisters, let’s see what we can do in th coming year to make good progress and see a great improvement in the year to come. Thank you and best wishes.	Mary	Bostian
FIRST LADY’S LETTER
Our gracious First Lady of the U. S., Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson, sent a warm letter of appreciation to the S.W.U. in answer to the Resolution adopted at the Convention for America Beautiful. Since it is one of Mrs. Johnson’s favorite projects, the beautification of America should be of interest to every American lady, and of course, of special interest to Slovenian ladies who love their gardens and flowers most of all. Mrs. Johnson’s personally signed letter states her thanks for our efforts and constructive support of the work to “preserve nature’s corners of beauty and channel our growth in ways that enhance, and do not diminish, our natural surroundings.”

No. 40, Lorain, Ohio. — It’s been quite some time since 1 had an article in our Zarja, since as they say, everybody would rather read than write. In the first place, I would like to thank everyone who sent me flowers and all the other gifts, also for the get-well cards, that I received at the time of my illness in the hospital, and while I was convalescing at home. It is nice to know that one has so many, nice friends.
We wish to welcome our three new members; they are, Mary Zallar, Mary Ploszaj and Johanna Stiglih.
Dear members if you know of anyone who would like to join our branch No. 40 just set me know and I will be glad to write them up. Now they can join to the age of GO included. Let us all TRY and get one new member.
At our last meeting, we decided to have our Christmas gift exchange on December 13th, the value of the gift is one dollar. Lunch will be served at G p. m. so please be on time. On the same night, our regular meeting will be at 7 p. m. I am hoping for a large attendance. We will elect officers for the coming year and also Mother of the Year.
Mrs. Mary Plečnik celebrated her 87th birthday; she attends all of our meetings. Her two daughters, Ann liabroski and Rose Knezetic also had a birthday lately All three came to the meeting with a lot of goodies with which we were all treated and we thank them very much. We all wish them many more healthy birthdays.
A very happy birthday to our Supreme Secreteary, Albina Novak and to all our members who are having birthdays in November and December.
On the sick list we have our recording secretary, Louise Mahnic, we hope to see her at our next meeting so she will continue with her duty.
Also on the sick list are Antonia Kos, Frances Dougan, Antonia Škerjanc, Agnes Ivancic, Louise Maticic and Johanna Svete. We wish them all a speedy recovery.
This year we had four members who passed away. The last two are Mary LaVriha and Mary Baraga. — Surviving Mrs. LaVriha are her husband Jack, 2 sons Jack, Jr. and Anthony and a daughter, Mrs. Mary Plaszaj and also 6 grandchildren. Mrs. Baraga’s survivors include three sons Frank, Cyril and Joseph, a daughter Mrs. Mary Mudrock, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Our deepest sympathy to both families and to the departed, may they rest in peace.
Members of the auxiliary of the Slovenian National Home, held a house warming for our treasurer, Mrs. Mary Klinar. We bought her a lovely scenery picture for the living room wall and we also gave her a

No. 43, Milwaukee, Wis. Our first fall meeting was held at Vickie’s home. It was enjoyable to see old familiar faces which were missed for a couple of months. Our new member, Rose Mavko, was initiated and we extend a hearty welcome to her.
Card	Party and Rummage	Sale
were the main topics of discussion, but no final date was set, altho they will take place in the near future, so please hold your rummage items.
On Sunday, Sept. 24th, Archbishop Cousins dedicated the new St. John’s church	and blessed the hall	and
school.	An assembly of priests,	par-
ishioners and friends were at the dedication. Following the dedication, a Solemn	High Mass was offered by
Rev. Claude Okorn, the sermon was preached by Archbishop Cousins. The choir, under the supervision of Mr. E. Majhenich, was very touching and beautiful. After Mass, a delicious dinner was served in the new hall. A very memorable and unforgetl'ul event.
Toni Phillips was hospitalized and is now recuperating at home. Mamie Ambrosh also underwent surgery at Columbia Hospital. To all our sick and shut-ins, a speedy recovery.
Congratulations and best wishes to Mr. and Mrs. James Goggins, Sr., and Anna Mae, on the first grandchild and nephew. James, Jr. and his dear wife are the proud parents of a baby boy.

No. 50, Cleveland, O. Our September meeting was so grand that I really don’t know where to begin. The first thing I’d like to report is the return of our President, Frances Sietz. Welcome back Fran!!!! We also had the pleasure of entertaining Supreme President Toni Turek’s mother and sister-in-law, Mrs. Antonia Gornick, from Chisholm, Minn., and Mrs. Mary Gornick, from California. It was just too bad they couldn’t stay in our city visiting a little longer.
Three of our new members were initiated; Dorothy Husek, Jean Zagar, and Ann Evanetich. The meeting was a huge success due to Fran Sietz and Carole Traven, as they planned the whole meeting around three of our Charter members; Fran, Mitzi, and Jo Bencin. It was referred to as “The Bencin Sisters Night!” Carol conjured a little song up to the tunel of Three Little Words, and it goes like this:

We mean those three little girls, Our charter members, I’m sure you
all know,
And what we feel in our hearts,
We mean sincerely,

This was all done through the hearts of our members as these lovely ladies have never refused any little favor that was asked of them in the 3G years they have been with us, so ladies I’m sure that you all join in wishing these sisters all the good wishes.
Mr. and Mrs John Zagorc are celebrating their 20th Wedding anniversary and Mr. and Mrs. Matt Evanetich are celebrating their 25th. Good wishes go their way from our members.
Frances Glavin, our Sunshine girl, reports of the hospitalization of her son Ronnie, who is presently confined to Highland View Hospital with Multiple Sclerosis, and Mrs. Celia Žnidaršič, is ill at home and confined to a wheel chair. So, won’t you ladies graciously drop them a card to help cheer them?
Congratulations go to Ken Zagar and Mary Martin, who were joined in Holy Matrimony on Oct. 7th, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help church. (Now Jean Zagar can enroll as a member.)
Now I would like to report on the trip to Barberton, Ohio and the State Convention that was held at the same
time, on Sept. 24th. Branch No. 6, were the hostesses, and we must say they were just more than hospitable, to our group. They also celebrated their 40th Anniversary. The dinner was great and food plentiful, and the service to the tables was wonderful.
We chartered a bus for the occasion, and I can’t begin to tell you the fun that we had on the way. Of course we came about an hour late, as the bus driver got lost in the shuffle, but if it was not for “Rabbi” John Cesnik, it would have been kind of dull, as he was the life of the party. We also had two accordionists, Tony Zagar, and Steve Vogrin, who kept us singing all the time. Their wives had to entertain themselves, as the rest of us kept them hoppin’ with music.
Our Drill Team presented the candles for the deceased members with the help of some very young girls from Barberton. There was a short stage show from a few individual groups, including our newly formed Choral group, with the honors going to Mary Bostian, and our director, Frank Gorensek. He was very proud of our ladies, as they only had a month of practice. In fact, Rev. Father Praznik, invited the ladies to sing at Barberton’s “Night in Slovenia’” which is to take place the week after Easter Sunday. The decision will be up to Mr. Gorensek, as only he knows if we’ll be ready to perform. All in all, a grand time was had by everyone, and thank you Branch No. G for all your hospitality.
Mr. and Mrs. Max Želodec cancelled the trip at the last minute, due to son Max’s illness, but from what I hear now, he is on the road to recovery.
Ladies, I have been kind of ahead of myself in the last two issues regarding meeting night, so this time I will make up, as the next meeting is on Nov. 20th so please don’t miss, as the plans will be discussed for our Christmas party. Till meeting night,

We also discussed the trip to the Convention Sept. 10th at Tower-Soudan. A bus was chartered and all members were welcome to attend. Tickets were also sold for a quilt and bond.
To Patricia Hrovat who was a patient at the Hibbing General Hospital, we wish God’s speed to a rapid recovery and also to all our other sick members, too. After taking care of all business on hand sister Josephine Oswald led us in prayer, thus bringing our meeting to an end.

Queen Jean Primozich of Eveleth’s 75th Anniversary
Eveleth, Minnesota’s 75th anniversary celebration in July consisted of three days of parades, shows, and historical displays which showed how the years have passed in this city on the Iron Range.
Jubilee Queen, Jean Primozich, reigned over the proceedings and added beauty and graciousness to the scene. She is the daughter of John and Lillian Primozich, well-known businessman and his wife of Eveleth. Mr. Primozich is also active in Slovenian fraternals.
Jean is a member of Br. 19 as are other members of her family. Our best wishes — she’s a lovely girl and the pride of Eveleth!

On Sunday, Sept. 10th, a chartered bus arrived at our store and picked up 19 women for their jaunt to Tower-Soudan for Minnesota Day. There we were greeted by so many smiling faces that it was like “old home week." Greetings were all a-round us. Rev. Rudolph Faith gave us all his blessings, and sister Cor-inne Leskovar, Editor of Zarja, was our only speaker. She did a wonderful job, although we missed all the rest of the Supremo Officers whom
we have met at past Minnesota Days.
To Mrs. Anthony Yapel who was toastmistress and did such a wonderful job in making all the people welcome, hats off to her!
Sister Mary Gotchnik of Ely livened up the whole convention with her accordian selections and Mary Hutai led us in community singing. I could go on and on but as little space is allowed, I must keep my report short.
But we must say thanks to the Banquet Committee for doing such a nice job in serving and also preparing the meal. It was just delicious.
There was also the excitement of calling names for the Bond and Comforter which was given to sister Mrs. Skraba from Gheen and yours truly the comforter. There was also an apron and a plate from Slovenia which was donated by our Supreme Secretary for the door prize. Sisters from Aurora and Ely were awarded those items. We wish to thank each one of you in showing us a wonderful, pleasant and joyous Sunday afternoon. We will all be looking forward to seeing you all at the next convention which is going to be held next year at Nashwauk. I could go on and on about our doings but the lines are limited and if you all come next year you will see for yourself that you can really have a good time.

No. 54, Warren, O. — Our Branch celebrated its 35th Anniversary at the September meeting. We had a large group in attendance and charter members present were:	Rose
Racher, Mary Ponikvar, Anne Mlaker, Victoria Zuga and Jennie Golden.

Frances Banozich another charter member is a longtime resident of Arizona.
An enjoyable evening was spent reminiscing about the past 35 years. Hostesses for the evening were Pres. Rose Racher, Mary Waltko and Joanne Ponikvar. A beautiful cake especially decorated for the occasion was made by Millie Habich who came from her new place of residence in Pennsylvania to be among us. During the meeting, plans were made for the annual Christmas party to be held on Tuesday, December 19 at 6:30 p. m. It will be a covered dish dinner at the home of Betty Vadas, 2652 Brier St. S. E. where all our meetings are now held. You are asked to bring your own tableware and $1.00 gift exchange. Please try to attend and show some enthusiasm for your branch!

"WE'RE GRATEFUL AND HAPPY"
No. 34, Soudan, Minn. How does one go about expressing gratitude to all who came — to all who helped or donated to our Branch #34 for Minnesota Day — to all those who took part in our program and the day’s activities? There is no other way but to write to Dawn Magazine and express our thanks publicly to all! Those who were there know that it was a most wonderful day — from the time the first guests arrived (from Duluth) and followed by bus and car for the next 2 hours — enjoying friendship and reminiscenses with one another over “coffee and” until Mass time at 11:00 o’clock. How nice it was to see our church filled with SWU members with our pastor Father Rudolph Faith welcoming all — and our choir director Mrs. Frank Vesel directing us in “Češčena si Marija” when the Mass ended — it was truly beautiful. To her and the other members of the choir our thanks in joining us at Mass that day, and helping us celebrate the Spiritual part of our program so fittingly.
Our business meeting followed the Mass with Mrs. Barbara Rosandich presiding and welcoming all present,
—	we had 262 registered from 14 out of 15 Branches but, served over 200 at the Banquet. At the business meeting Mrs. Corinne Leskovar presented a gold medal with S.W.U. emblem to Mrs. Mary Pahula for her many years of faithful service to SWU. She has been a charter member of Branch #34 since it’s organization in 1929 and has held office continuously in one capacity or another — for the past 20 or more years as Sec’y.-Treas. Corinne also spoke on the “Slovenian Chapel” at the National Shrine in Washington DC (plans for which will be made in the near future by the Executive Board). She also called for cooperation by members with the officers of their various Branches — and to work hard at enrolling new juvenille members. Nashwauk was chosen as the site of the 196S Minnesota Day. Following the meeting Mrs. Leskovar took group pictures of the various Branches before they departed for the Soudan School gymnasium for the Banquet. I’m sure that the sight of the banquet tables loaded with delicious food and beautiful flowers provided a “welcome” to all the hungry appetites? The food was delicious! We were proud of our members who worked so hard in preparing the food, the tables and decorations and favors — and to our pretty young girls who served us.
After the banquet a program was presented with Mrs. Anthony Yapel as toastmistress. The invocation was given by Father Faith, followed by Mrs. John Pahula, president of Branch #34 who extended a welcome to all present and Mrs. Barbara Rosandich—Minn. State Pres, gave the response. Community singing (both English and our beloved Slovenian songs) was directed by Mary Hutar accompanied by Mrs. Charles Merhar both of Ely.
Miss Mary Beth Williams of Soudan accompanied by Mrs. Leo Helin of Tower sang “Sound of Music” and “Let There be Peace on Earth.” Mrs. Leskovar (managing e-ditor of Dawn Magazine) was our principal speaker and her kind words to the local Branch and inspiring words to all SWU members made us feel as one big family. Mrs. Ann Podgoršek (Duluth) pres, of the Supreme auditing board expressed her pride in the Minnesota Branches who year after year make Minnesota Day something each

The Benediction was given by Father Faith after he told the ladies how very much he enjoyed the entire day and was so pleased to be among such friendly and gracious ladies.
Before the program closed with God Bless America by all, messages were read from Mrs. Antonia Turelc (Supreme Pres.) and from Marie Floryan (Supreme Vice-Pres.) and Mary Bostian (director of youth activities) — all sent the r greetings and wishes for a wonderful Minn. Day — and urged all to work for a bigger and better SWU. A message was also received from Donald E. Micklech, mayor of Tower who had a a previous commitment out of town and was unable to be present to welcome the Minnesota Branches to Tower, which at the turn of the Century was the center of Slovenian culture and the site of the first Slovenian Newspaper to appear in print; the printshop was located in Tower.
Prizes were awarded to Mrs. John Skraba of Gheen, $50.00 US Government Bond; Mrs. Gertrude Kochevar, hand made quilt; Mrs. Antonia Vukelich, apron; and Mrs. Kathrine Hanka, barometer.
Again our sincere thanks to all who donated our prizes — Mrs. John Dragavon, the Bond, Mrs. Mary Pahula, the Quilt and Mrs. Albina Novak our Supreme Secretary, the apron and Zakonski Barometer.
To each and everyone who in any way helped to make Minnesota Day of 19G7 such a successful venture— and such a beautiful example of the Slovenian fraternal spirit, we again say Thank you—and may God bless you all!

A BOUQUET OF THANKS TO MINNESOTA
Many things will be written about the recent Minnesota Day celebration in Tower-Soudan, and all who were there will have pleasant memories for a long time. Mine will be the same, I assure you! The photos taken on that day which appear in this issue will tell the story to one and all — it was a most wonderful day.
Compliments to each and every one of you for the efforts made to bring out such a record attendance. To Tower from Duluth, on the bus I rode, there was the feeling of great expectations. On the way home, the members were elated that their expectations were fulfilled. This is one example but I feel certain that all the other groups felt the same. Everything was done to make the day wonderful and above all, the friendship and sisterly feeling between all of us, shone over us just as the sun.
To my sister officers, I thank you for your conscientious direction of the day’s activities. To all the members of Minnesota, my hat is off to you for your spirit and loyalty. To all my old friends and my new friends, God bless you and keep you well!	Corinne Leskovar
MINNESOTA GATHERS IN RECORD NUMBERS AT SOUDAN
The 10th annual Minnesota State Convention of S.W.U. was held at the parish hall of St. Martin Church in Tower, Minn., on Sept. 10th, 1967.
The meeting was opened with prayer by Mrs. Barbara Rosandich, State President. This was followed by words of greeting to all present.
The Minutes of the previous meeting held in Crosby in 1966 were read by Mrs. Anthony Yapel of Tower-Soudan, Br 34. She also read a letter of congratulations from the Youth Director, Mary Bostian, in which it was stated that all branches should plan activities for juvenile members to make S.W.U. more attractive to prospective members and to keep those juniors already enrolled familiar with our Slovenian traditions and culture, 235 members were present for the State Convention.
Mrs. Ann Podgoršek, Supreme Auditor of Duluth, was introduced. She congratulated Br. 34 for their efforts in getting such a large turnout of members for the meeting. She, too, urged members to work for a larger membership. She react a telegram from the Supreme President, Antonia Turek, with greetings and well wishes for a successful Minnesota Day.
Mrs. Rosandich then introduced the Editor of Zarja-the Dawn, who expressed her happiness seeing so many members present. She then awarded a medal with S.W.U. emblem to Mrs. Mary Pahula, for her many years of service to Br. 34 and the organization. Mrs. Pahula is a charter officer holding the office of Secretary-Treasurer all this time.
Mrs .Leskovar then told of plans for the Slovenian Chapel at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C. Further plans were to be made in the near future by the executive board.
She called for the cooperation of members with their officers and urged all present to enroll juvenile members.
A wire from Marie A. Floryan, Supreme Vice-President of West Allis, Wis., was read. She sent greetings to all present and wished everyone a happy day.
Mrs. Rosandich then announced that Nashwauk was chosen as the site for Minnesota Zveza Day in 1968 and Keewatin for 1969.
The meeting was adjourned with prayer. The members attended Mass that morning at St. Martin’s Church with Father Rudolph Faith as celebrant.
The banquet followed the meeting, held at the Soudan School gymnasium. The program afterward was well received as was the awarding of prizes which concluded the day’s activities. Prizes went to:	Mrs.	John Skrabec

POTICA FOR DIABETICS

Mrs. Jennie Zagorc of Cleveland, 0.; member of Branch 10 sent me a warm and interesting letter. She was kind enough to include a walnut potica recipe for diabetics and one for flancate. Of course, anyone can enjoy this potica recipe which I found quite tasty although suoaryl is used instead of sugar. With the holiday baking already in progress this recipe may be of special interest to some of you. As to the quantity of this potica that a diabetic might eat would depend on the advice of his doctor.
FLANCATE
8 egg yolks
S tablespoons wine
1 teaspoon lemon juice % teaspoon salt
2 tablespoon sugar
I	% cups flour
Slowly mix the ingredients until well-mixed and the consistency of soft noodle dough. Let rest for % hour. Roll the dough as thin as the blunt side of a knife blade. Cut into small squares 3x3 inches; within the square make two 2 inch slits. Have ready hot Crisco and fry until golden brown. (Have enough fat so that flancate float while frying.) Lift out and drain. While still hot, sprinkle with powdered sugar.
In V2 cup of lukewarm milk crumble one small yeast with 1 tablespoon sugar and let rise.
in a large bowl or pan place:
Vi pound oleo (let it melt)
2	cups milk >/2 cup sour cream
4	egg yolks 1 teaspoon vanilla.
Mix very good and heat to lukewarm. Add the raised yeast mixture. Add
1	tablespoon salt and 4 cups of flour (on doctor’s order, Mrs. Zagorc uses unbleached flour like Sapphire flour from Montana Flour Mills.) Add 1 cup glutten flour and 1 cup whole wheat flour. The dough is not kneaded with the hands, but mixed with a spoon for 15 minutes (dough will be more 011 the soft side.) Grease dough, cover and let it rise in lukewarm oven for one hour or until double in size.
Note: I wrote to the Montana Flour Mills Company about this Sapphire Flour. They replied: “This Sapphire Flour is enjoying wide acceptance, especially in the Ohio area. We have

DATE SQUARES
Date squares travel well as Holiday gifts. They are golden baked and tasty, certain to arrive as fresh and chewy as the moment you wrapped them.
Vi cup salad oil
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
2 eggs
V2 teaspoon vanilla % cup sifted all-purpose flour 14 teaspoon baking powder Vi, teaspoon salt
1	cup finely cut dates V2 cup coarsely chopped walnuts
Mix salad oil with brown sugar. Add eggs and vanilla and beat well. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt; blend into sugar-egg mixture. Stir in dates and nuts. Turn into greased 8x8x2 inch baking pan. Bake in 350 degree oven 30 to 35 minutes. Cut into squares. Roll in confectioner’s sugar when ready to serve. Yield 25 squares.
When mailing these squares or any perishable food gifts, follow post office recommendations for packaging them. Saran wrap is excellent for wrapping. To keep the squares undamaged during mailing, wrap each square separately. This is a good rule to follow for any mailed foods prepared in small or individual portions.
Wrap carefully and mail early for a happy holiday.

If the filling is too dry, add one more beaten egg white.	Roll out
dough V2 inch thick, 24 x 32! inches, on table covered with cloth sprinkled with flour. Spread filling on dough, roll up like for jelly roll and place in a greased large pan or several small ones. Cover and let rise until double in bulk. Brash top with melted oleo or beaten egg white. Bake 45 minutes at 350 degrees and then 325 degrees for 15 minutes. (If using pyrex pans bake the entire hour at, "25 degrees.) Remove from pans and cool on rack
With that left-over cooked turkey on hand, try Turkey-Green Bean Bake as planned by United State Department of Agriculture food specialists.
TURKEY-GREEN 15EAN RAKE
1% cups trimmed fresh or frozen green beans V/i cups boiling water 2Vz cups cooked, diced turkey 1% cups mushroom sauce or 1 can 10y2 condensed cream of mushroom soup Vi teaspoon salt
Va teaspoon black pepper or a dash of cayenne 1 cup packaged precooked rice 3% oz. can French fried onion rings G tomato slices
Cook fresh or frozen beans in boil ing water for 5 minutes. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Add turkey, sauce, and seasonings to green beans; simmer 2 minutes. Stir in the rice and half of the onion rings. Pour into a 2 quart casserole. Top witli remaining onion rings and tomato slices. Bake 20 to 25 minutes. Cal ories per serving 420.
Variation:	Omit the mushroom
sauce. Increase the water to 1% cups. Add five chicken bouillon cubes, Vi cup diced celery and Vi cup finely diced onion with the turkey and seasonings. Omit the French fried onion rings. Calories per serving: about 250.

JOIN US IN CELEBRATING THE “NEW ERA” OF SLOVENIAN WOMEN’S UNION!
No. 55, Girard, O. — Our September meeting was opened with a prayer led by Mrs. Barbara Umeck; it was very well attended. There has been no report of illness. Our deepest sympathy was sent to Mrs. Mary Kristen on the loss of her beloved husband, Jacob. At this time I am going to ask again for used sheets, white or pastel shirts or any white material that can be used for bandages. Mrs. Mary Bradish has donated her valuable time to make bandages and convert shirts into hospital gowns so we should gladly give our used articles as they are needed.
Mrs. Mary Bradish’s daughter, Kathy had a great honor bestowed upon her. She is a member of The Ohio State Youth Choir. The Ohio State Youth Choir made its appearance at The Ohio State Fair for one week. Kathy is also looking forward to a trip to Europe next summer. She has a beautiful voice and we all wish her great success in her singing.

No. 56, Hibbing, Minn. — With the fall season upon us and the National Convention and Minnesota Day behind us, we are in the swing for the coming months. The National Convention I am sure will be a never forgettable event for all who attended. “It was wonderful” is all I can say and thanks to the committees in charge for the preparations and details.
It was good to see all the ladies at Minnesota Day and our hats off to Tower-Soudan, Br. 34, for their wonderful preparations. Everything was great and it goes to show what a handful of ladies can do. See you at Nashwauk next year.
Our September meeting started off the season as we didn't have meet-
ings during the summer months. We had a nice attendance. Reports were given on the National Convention and Minnesota Day. The charter was draped for the late Anna Chrep and at this writing we have lost another member, Julia Huzak. To the bereaved relatives, our deepest sympathy and eternal rest to the deceased. We have also had several sick members during the past month — namely, Angela Genac, Anna Rapinac. Anna Brklich, Gladys Klaysmat, and Mary Satovich. A speedy recovery to all!
After our business meeting, cards were played and lunch served. The prize winners were Dorothy Oberstar, Amelia Domeen, Mary Massich, Margaret Slielko, Mary Meadows and Ann Reynar, a guest from North Hollywood, Calif. The hostesses for the meeting were Margaret Skorich, Antonia Rapinac, Manda Butarac, Liz Gaige, Anna Brklich and Anne Rapinac.
At our October meeting the hostesses were Dorothy Plese, Margaret Matasich, Frances Gardeski, Anna Chacich, Anna l’ulis. I will also announce our plans for our Christmas meeting next month.

No. 57, Niles, Ohio. — Vacations are almost over. It was nice to hear that our President, Prances Yerman and some friends got the chance to visit the Expo G7 in Canada. Virginia Zevkovich and family vacationed In Wyoming where her sister lives; they also were in Yellowstone National Park. Frances Stanec and husband toured thru Michigan and up to Canada.
Our deepest sympathy goes out to Jane Logar on the loss of her father and Mrs. Louis Racher on the loss of her mother.
We welcome our two new members who are Emma Gardner and Ann Hostinsky. We’re always glad to get new members, so let’s get busy, girls!
We will have our Christmas Banquet at Alberini’s. Hope we have a nice turnout as a good time is in store for all. There will be a Christmas gift exchange.

No. 66, Canon City, Colo. — A small group attended our August meeting called for the purpose of electing a delegate to the State Convention in Pueblo. Yours truly went as a delegate.
On Sept. 10th, the Pueblo Branch No. Z were celebrating their 40th Anniversary. So our State President, Anna Pachak also decided to have our State Convention at the same time. It was a gala affair and even the weatherman cooperated. We started the day with Mass and Holy Communion at St. Mary’s church with Father Daniel Gnidica, O.S.B., officiating. The participation in the Mass was beautiful. After the Mass we had a short business meeting in the church basement with our Supreme Secretary, Albina Novak, being with us. We were very pleased and happy to have her here. I was exceptionally proud to have her here in Colorado.
Finishing the meeting, she was rushed off to talk over the Pueblo radio station KCSJ. I didn’t get to hear her talk, but have heard a lot of nice compliments on her speech.
At 1:30 p. m. we sat down to a bountiful banquet at the Mlnnequa Club with a nice number of officers, members, and guests. Fr Mihelich of Denver, Father Kogosek and Father Daniel of Pueblo were among the guests.
There was a very interesting talk. Dancing followed the program. All too soon it was time to leave for our home. Our State President, Anna Pachak, and her committee did a very fine job.
Our sympathy to sisters Mildred and Cecile Adamic on the loss of their mother, Louise Legan, who died following a long illness. Cecile is our branch secretary. Also sympathy to
sister, Catherine Scavarda on the loss of her mother-in-law, Minnie Scavarda who passed away after a short illness.
Congratulations to the Javernick cousins who were recently married. Tony Javemick’s mother, Mary Javernick and his sisters belong to our branch and James Javemick’s mother, and his sisters also belong to our branch. Also, congratulations to Martha Adamic (sister, Mildred Pierce’s mother) who celebrated her 90th birthday this month.
Patricia Legan is recovering nicely from an emergency appendectomy.

No. 72, Pullman, III. — Our next meeting will be held on Sunday afternoon, November 12th at 2 p.m. at the home of Angela Bezlaj, 318 West 111th Place. This will be our last meeting of the year 1967, so it will also serve as our Christmas meeting. Please be sure to attend. After the meeting we will have a social hour. Please bring a grab bag gift worth a-bout a dollar. Do not bring any refreshments. These will be provided. We want YOU to come. But if you cannot do so, we’d like to ask for a donation from you or some “surprise” gift that we can sell or auction and so add a little to our treasury.

Our October meeting opened with a prayer and we prayed for all sick members. We welcomed Betty Simec and Jean Novotny, our former members back.

Our Christmas project, ladles, is to contribute as much as you wish to the Slovenian chapel, in the Immaculate Conception Shrine in Washington, D. C. Please give money to officers or bring it to the meeting.
Louise Epley reported that Rose Zbasnik, Ann Fike, Agnes Walters, and Frances Travnik went to the State Convention in Barberton. They all had a delicious dinner. Slovenian cooking can’t be beat.
We were all so proud to learn of Ann Predovic’s trip to Pensacola, Fla. to pin the wings on her son, Don J. Predovic on his graduation. Congratulations and God bless you in the air!

No. 85, DEPue, III. — We resumed our monthly meetings October 15th at the Slovenian Dom.
Sister Mary Stupar, our president for 30 years, would like the younger members to assume responsibility of the various offices, as soon as possible. As she stated, “thirty years is long enough for any office!”
Our Branch extends its deepest sympathy to Sister Anna Zoran and family on the death of her daughter, Ann Buchwald. May she rest in peace.
Best wishes to my niece, Sue Ann (Machek) Riggs and her husband Alex who were recently married at St. Mary’s church, De Pue, 111. Sue is the daughter of sister Mary Machek and Louis Machek. She was a very lovely bride!
Sister Anna Kerzan was a recent hospital patient, but is home now. May she and all who are ailing, return to good health soon.
Birthday greetings to the members who have birthdays in September and October. May you have many more!
Hoping that a good number of the members will come to the October meeting, as we will have to start making plans for the December meeting, for we will be celebrating our branch’s 30th Anniversary.

No. 86, Nashwauk, Minn. — It is
good to be holding our meetings a-gain after a wonderful summer filled with fruitful labor and a safe and healthful vacations. Your reporter spent a month in Dearborn, Mich, with a daughter and son-in-law and their four sons. On arriving home,
1 found another daughter and her family were there to greet me. They had come from California.
Our first meeting was well attended. It was my first experience in conducting a meeting as Vice-Pres. while our regular President, Mary Zakrajšek was away visiting her son in Denver, Colo.
On September 10th, a few of us attended the annual Minnesota Day meeting and banquet, held in Tower-Soudan. Those of us fortunate enough to be able to go, were Katie Stimac, Anna Bolf, Mary Zakrajšek, Marian Dergantz and Anne Mazar. We really enjoyed the whole day. Sister, Katie Stimac gave a good report of the Minnesota Day activities at our meeting. Our branch will hold the Minnesota Day meeting in our town next year.
Alter our business session was over, we enjoyed a social hour with guests. Hilda Denne and Mary Gram served a delicious lunch. One of our guests, Mabel Gustafson, took home the draw prize. The Canasta prize was awarded to Pauline Stish, and Petra Larson, the bridge prize.
I hope to see as many or more of our members at our next meeting.

No. 89, Oglesby, III. — Our fall
meeting is always spiced with our auction. Mrs. Frank Gorišek as our veteran auctioneer, with her natural humor can make the members loosen their purse strings. Thirty seven dollars was taken in for the many articles from apple strudel to potted plants. We wish more members would come to this most enjoyable evening. They would contribute to the treasury and go home with an article someone cast off or spent hours making.
The bowlers will again begin to sell candy. We hope everyone will help out, so that they can continue to represent Br 89 at the Mid-west Bowling Tournament.
A special recovery wish to Lillian Byrne who has spent considerable time in the hospital.

No. 95, So. Chicago, III. — It is
with the greatest regret that I announce the death of one of our pioneer members, Mrs. Johanna Malcich, 9854 Exchange Ave. Let us not forget that in the formative years of our branch, she had served our branch with distinction and honor and deserves to be remembered with special gratitude. However, let us also not forget that she gave fully of her time, energy and resources to extend the influence of her church and other organizations. I know her passing will not only be a personal loss to her family, her death represents a great loss to our branch which she served so effectively.
Johanna Malcich, now rests in peace, but her noble and resplendent spirit remains to comfort us. Our branch will always remember her in our hearts and in our prayers. We join in extending to the members of her bereaved family our heartfelt sympathy. I would like to extend a vote of special thanks to Amelia Cuzella and Evelyn Driscoll for minding the store, when I was attending our Convention in Washington, D. C.
Probably the most important event which signals the end of summer and the beginning of the fall and winter season was the opening of our first meeting in September. It’s always an exciting time for our members, with old friends, different ideas to study, and the resumption of all the busy activities that lie ahead of us. A report on our tremendously successful convention was read by our delegate, Ann Kompare, who always gives an articulate and concise report, and in spite of the many demands upon her time, the welfare of our branch has always been her prime concern. I am happy to report that Ann Kompare was chosen as a Supreme Auditor, I know her contribution to the organization has been great and I am sure that our branch has enhanced its own importance by her selection to na-
tional office. Congratulations Ann! We have every confidence that you will perform your duties of your office creditably. Good luck and best wishes for a successful administration.
After the meeting Amelia Cuzella, who always sets a beautiful table maintains an air of informality in the way she serves the refreshments donated by the following ladies: Anna Nagoda, Mary Perkovich (96th and Muskegon) and Emma Yergovuch.

No. 103, Washington, D. C. — Our
September meeting got off to a wonderful start. It was rewarding to see that the interest and enthusiasm of our ladies did not dwindle down during the summer months. They are eager in planning for the 1967-68, activities.
First on the agenda of activities will be a “Second Anniversary Dinner-Dance,” to be held on Nov. 11, the feast day of St. Martin. A Slovenian Supper is planned followed by dancing and partying. The possible menu was discussed but an actual decision will be reached at the October meeting. Does it seem possible that two years have passed during which time we have realized many successful activities? Keep up the teamwork ladies and we shall realize many more anniversaries!
Jana Bevec and Mara Chokel must be complimented on the extremely de licious and elaborate refreshments served immediately after the meeting. I cannot begin to rave enough about the excellent preparation and serving of baked ham with pineapple, relishes, salad, cake ala mode, and coffee. My special thanks to Mrs. Bevec and Mrs. Chokel, who have been extremely active members since they joined our branch. Both ladies are members of the Choral Group.
Our “lively” Junior members conducted their own meeting simultaneously in an adjoining room. Nothing seems to stop these girls—not even distance. They are enthusiastic a-bout their position as members of our organization and want to contribute their share in making Branch #103 active. Plans were formulated for the Christmas Program in which the Junior members will perform. — Fine work girls, keep it up!
Member Miss Valerie Pintar visited in Washington during the month of September, before her trip to Europe. Valerie will live with a French family for one month in conjunction with her studies at Michigan University. From France she will visit Yugo-slovia and then return to the U, S. by December. Hope her sojourn is a happy and memorable one.

ZBIRKA ZA SLOVENSKO KAPELO V NARODNEM SVETIŠČU V WASHINGTONU, D. C.
SPLOŠNI PODATKI O NARODNEM SVETIŠČU
Svetišče Brezmadežnega spočetja v Washingtonu je največja katoliška cerkev v Združenih državah in sedma največja cerkev na svetu. Zgrajena je bilo zato, da služi kot vsenarodno svetišče vsej Katoliški cerkvi v Združenih državah.
Posebne spominske kapele so bile zato oddeljene za razne narodnostne skupine in redove, ki so prispevali k razvoju katoliške cerkve in kulture v Združenih državah.
Kapele, ki so jih narodnostne skupine že darovale (Poljaki, Litvanci, Slovaki, ameriški Mehikanci in Hrvatje) so z izjemo ene (slovenske) bodisi že dokončane ali pa se še grade.
Več kot en milijon ljudi obišče Narodno svetišče vsako leto in okrog 15,000 ljudi prisostvuje nedelskim mašam.
Cerkveni dostojanstveniki iz vseh dežel svetia obiščejo Svetišče v Washingtonu tekom svojih obiskov in mnogi, kot nedavno tudi nadškof Pogačnik, darujejo naše v številnih kapelah Svetišča.
SPLOŠNI PODATKI O SLOVENSKI KAPELI
Površina kapele znaša približno 300 kvadratnih čevljev.
Namen kapele je da služi kot trajno in častno priznanje delu ameriških Slovencev.
Kapela se nahaja na južni strani Spominske dvorane. Tu pričenjajo vsi izletniški obiski Svetišča. Zato bo slovensko kapelo videlo največje število obiskovalcev in bo tako obenem tudi služila boljšemu poznavanju Slovencev in njih kulture.
Svetišče ni fara; kapele v svetišču so zatorej spominske kapele in ne farne podružnice. Slovenskim duhovnikom na obisku v Washingtonu bo kapela vedno na razpolago, da v njej lahko darujejo mašo zasebno ali pa za izletniške skupine.
DENARNE IN POGODBENE PODROBNOSTI
Prispevek za kapelo je enkratna vsota v znesku 70,000 dolarjev, plačljivih v dveh ali treh obrokih. Mora pa biti izplačana predno je kapela popolnoma dokončana. V gornjem prispevku je vključeno vse: od začetnih arhitektovih osnovnih načrtov pa do sveč na oltarju. Vklju-četno je tudi trajno vzdrževanje kapele.
Dve leti sta običajno potrebni za popolno dokončanje kapele. Ta doba daje dovolj časa za priprave na posvetitev kapele in upamo, da boste lahko prisostvovali temu zgodovinskemu dogodku in si tako sami ogledali sadove vaših naporov.
Maginnis, Walsh in Kennedy so uradni arhitekti Svetišča in kot taki odobre končni načrt kapele. Bodo pa z nami v stalnem stiku in upoštevali naše želje glede načrta in notranje ureditve kapele. Kapela bo poudarila osnovne točke slovenske verske zgodovine doma in v Združenih državah, a njena osrednja zamisel bo Brezjanska Mati Božja, kateri bo kapela posvečena.
V	petek 13. oktobra 1967 se je vršila v Clevelandu, Ohio prva seja ali sestanek društvenih zastopnikov in posameznikov z namenom, da pričnemo z zbiranjem denarnih prispevkov za Slovensko kapelo v veličastnem svetišču Brezmadežnega Spočetja v Washingtonu, D. C. -Med nami so bili trije zunanji gostje in sicer: Rev. Frank Blatnik iz Patterson, N. J., gdč. Florenc Gregorič in g. Bogomir Chokel iz Washingtona. Vsi trije so poudarili in nam podrobno razložili pomen in poudarjali, da je to zadnja prilika za Slovence, če hočemo med drugimi narodi tudi mi imeti svojo kapelo, ker to je zadnja kapela, ki je še na razpolago. Če jo ne vzamemo mi, je že pripravljena druga skupina iz Pliiladelphije, da plača za ta prostor.
Vsi navzoči na tem sestanku so bili mnenja, da mi takoj pričnemo s zbirko in ker bo ta kapela spomenik vseh Slovencev v Ameriki, zato naj pri tem sodelujejo in prispevajo vsi Slovenci širom Zdr. držav. Ker je Cleveland največja slovenska naselbina v Ameriki, zato naj bo tudi tukaj središče za to kampanjo in vsi denarni prispevki poslani na izvoljenega tajnika na naslov:

No. 105, Detroit, Mich. — It has
been some time since I have written an article for the “Zarja”. I am truly sorry about that. I have had quite a hectic summer, remodeling our kitchen and working. A person does
not have too much time for any other activities. There is still much to do, but I am going to try very hard to get a monthly article in from here on. On the sick list is Ann McGee. I was informed that she was in the hospital again. That woman is too active, so therefore, she had to pay the consequence. Now, I hope she will take heed an take it easy. We love you Ann, and we want you to get well real soon!
Several of our members were included with the tour to Europe that was made in June. They were as follows:	Pauline	and	John	Adamic,
Jeanny Boli, Ann Lindich, Catherine Mustek, Ann Karun, Audry Krulic. The countries they visited were Holland, Yugoslavia, Germany, Austria, Italy and Sweden. They took a number of movie pictures and they were shown at our Slovene Club one Saturday evening. Everyone was fascinated. For weeks there was just talk about that trip and what a wonderful time they had. Everybody talked about the wonderful hospitality. They ate and drank "vino”. It is something they will all remember for a long time.
We have a few new members, Betty Karas, (Zorka Moisei's daughter) and Angeline Yevtich. Welcome to our group ladies.
Our annual banquet was postponed due to the riot we had hore in Detroit. That will be discussed at our next meeting.

Ko iščeš si pravic, pokoncu glavno nosi!
Ponižnika ves svet tepta in še za norca ga ima!
Skromnost je dandanes redka čednost, ponižnosti pa sploh več ni. Saj je res, da prevelika ponižnost ovira napredek človeštva. Kdor je preskromen in preponižen ter z vsem zadovoljen, — v življenju ne pride daleč. Prehiteli ga bodo drugi podjetnejši, pogumnejši in brezobzirnejši. Gotova mera skromnosti pa je vseeno potrebna za trden temelj srečnega človeka. Lahko si želi človek marsikaj in prav, je	da	skuša z lastno	močjo
in pridnostjo doseči nekaj.	Toda	kljub mnogim	zahte-
vam, ki jih človek stavi na življenje, se mora vseeno zavedati, da je želja pač le želja, ki se sicer lahko uresniči, a ni, da bi se absolutno morala. Prav umestno je, da človek smatra vsako uresničeno željo za nekako izne-nadenje, kot pa če zahteva vse polno od življenja in je potem bridko razočaran in obupan, ko se mu želje ne izpolnijo.
MORAM je lepa beseda, polna globokega pomena, ki krepi voljo in odpira široko pot v življenje, ako jo u-porabljamo na pravem mestu in ob pravem času. ‘‘TO MORAM IMETI! TO MORAM DOSEČI! so krasne besede, ki človeku držijo glavo pokonci, toda življenje si ne da ukazovati in zahteve se vedno ne izpolnijo.
Dušeslovci pravijo:— “Zahtevajmo malo od drugih, a mnogo od sebe! Vadimo svojo voljo, da nam bo podložna. Občudovanja vreden je človek in srečen je, ki zna obvladati samega sebe	in	zna	brzdati svoje	želje,
da ne podleže razočaranjem	že	pri	prvem udarcu.”
Vsaka mati želi svojemu otroku boljše in lepše življenje kot ga sama ima. Toda v tem stremljenju bi mati ne smela iti predaleč, da otrok ne razvadi, temveč jih naj uči, naj malo zahtevajo, da ne bodo pozneje razočarani. Razvajen otrok, ki je navajen, da mora vse imeti, postane silno nesrečen, ko spozna, da ne more v življenju imeti vsega, kar bi rad. Otroci bi se naj naučili ceniti malega, da postanejo vredni velikega. Da se danes v družinah to ne izvaja, ko smejo otroci imeti vse, kar poželijo, je deloma posledica nemirov, nezadovoljnosti in nesloge v družinah in v javnosti sploh.
MISLI
Nesrečen človek občuti dobro in prijazno besedo v svoji razboleli duši kakor balzam ter dobro besedo veliko bolj ceni, kakor denar, ki mu ga ponuja brezbrižna roka.

Hočeš biti za trenutek zadovoljna? Potem se maščuj! Ako pa hočeš biti trajno zadovoljna — odpuščaj!

Nihče ni tako dober kot ga hvali ljubezen, nihče tako slab kot ga slika mržnja.

Hudoben je vsak, ki druge kritizira, sam svoje grehe pa sebi prikriva.

V	mladosti se učimo, v starosti razumemo.
Noben greh ni tako velik, da bi ga še večja ljubezen ne mogla premagati.
Da se resnico pokoplje, je treba mnogo lopat.

Slovenska pesem je izraz in dokaz lepote slovenske duše. Slovenski narod je popeval v dneh žalosti in veselja, v dneh zmage in stiske, doma in na polju, pri delu in počitku, v dneh vojne in miru, v stari in novi domovini. Naj slovenska pesem še dolgo živi!

Brez vodstva in brez vodilnih osebnosti, ne more vstra-jati nobeno podjetje, nobena organizacija in noben narod. Vodstvo je neobhoden pogoj bitnosti. Oseba, ki stoji na čelu kaki skupini, bodisi podjetje, organizacija ali narod, črpa svoje zmožnosti iz ljudi, ki so okoli njega ali nje. Istočasno, če je vodilna oseba dobra, poštena in iskrena, oplemeniti vse one, ki se zbirajo okrog nje, v nasprotnem slučaju pa jih tudi lahko zastruplja in jemlje veselje.

JAPONCI IN ČAJ
Za Japonce je čas to, kar je za nas kava. Japonci si kratkomalo ne morejo misliti, da bi živeli brez čaja, saj ga po nekaj skodelic na dan popijejo celo tisti, ki drugače ne marajo nobene tekočine.
Povprečni Japonec popije vsak dan veliko čaja. Skoro vsak ima tam, kjer je v službi, v svojem predalu skodelico za čaj, ki je po japonskem običaju brez roča. da lahko v vsakem kratkem odmoru pije čaj. Strankam, ki pridejo v pisarno, takoj postrežejo s čajem. Japonci pijejo čaj pri vsaki jedi. Restavracije imajo vedno pripravljen vroč čaj, ki ga gostje lahko popijejo kolikor hočejo. Čudno torej ni, da Japonci porabijo skoro ves čaj, ki ga sami pridelajo, to je 80,000 ton na leto. Samo meščani glavnega mesta Tokija ga porabijo do 12,000 ton na leto.
Japonski 6aj je zelen, ki se ga v Ameriki lahko dobi, ne pa v Evropi. Tam imajo prodajalne na razpolago večinoma “črni čaj”. Tako mu pravijo zato, ker dobijo čajni listi pri sušenju in predelavi črno barvo.
Japonci sušijo čajne liste drugače, tako da ohranijo zeleno barvo, zato pravimo japonskemu čaju “zeleni čaj”. Ta čaj daje pri kuhanju svetlo zeleno tekočino z rumenkastim pridihom.	Japonski	čaj	je	prozoren,	grenko-
sladkega okusa	in	prijetnega	vonja.	Japonci	pijejo	čaj
brez vsakega dodatka; brez sladkorja, limone, ruma, itd. Pravijo namreč, da vsak dodatek uniči okus naravnega čaja.

V	neki protestni paradi, ki jih je to poletje bilo nič koliko, so črnci v plastičnih vrečkah nosili grile in stenice z napisi, da morajo živeti v stanovanjih, ki so polna golazni. Župan velikega mesta jim je svetoval:— “Mi beli, si znamo v takih slučajih pomagati! Stanovanja očistimo! Napravite še Vi tako! Vzemite v roke krtače, milo in vodo ter počistite, pa ne bo ne mrčes in ne umazanosti.” — Gospod župan ne ve, da je za tak o-pravek treba pridnih rok!

Silno mi je ugajala slika na strani augustove ZARJE. Skupina 80 deklic članic Zveze! Zelo glasna in učinkovita reklama za Mladinski oddelek! In kako srčkane so v svojih oblecah z ljubkim nasmehom! Naše čestitke Caro-lini in Kathy Cooke, ki tako lepo vodita in učita mladino v Clevelandu in Euclidu. Razveselilo me je tudi poročilo aktivne državne predsednice Mary Bostian, da je organizirala pevski klub, ki šteje že 30 članic. Da, Cleveland se vedno postavi! Želimo jim mnogo zabave in složnega sodelovanja!

Božja Previdnost nam daje tolažbo s prejemom vaše številne skupine, dragi slovenski romarji, ki ste prišli v Itim proslavit 1200 letnico spreobrnenja vaših prednikov h Kristusu.
Ganjeni in veseli vas prejemamo. Vaš prihod dobiva poseben pomen kot dejanje vere. Velika slovanska a-postola Ciril in Metod sta prišla v Rim, da bi dosegla pri Petrovem sedežu potrdilo in spodbudo za svojo misijonsko dejavnost. Po tisoč sto letih ste vi, vedno zvesti in vzorni verniki, šli po njunih stopinjah, da se zahvalite Gospodu za dar poklicanosti k evangeliju; da tu na grobu prvaka apostolov in blizu še vedno zgovornih spominov obeh svetnikov poživite svojo odločenost za krščanske življenje in da najdete novih moči za miroljubno osvojitev Kristusovega kraljestva.
Kako se čutim nasproti vam dolžnike za spodbude, ki nam jo dajete. Čast vam verniki, ki ste ohranili živo versko vnemo in zavzetost. Iz vaše dežele ste prišli
sem v središče krščanstva, da poživite svojo vere. Z vašim romanjem se je prvikrat zgodilo, da neki slovanski narod v Rimu proslavlja jubilej spreobrnitve h krščanski veri. Želimo, da postanejo vaše župnije kovačnice prepričanih in velikodušnih apostolov; želimo, da vaše družine postanejo svetišča, kjer se vzgajajo dobri božji služabniki, zvesti otroci cerkve, pošteni in delavni državljani. Družina je od Boga prejela poslanstvo, da bodi prva in življenska celica družbe. To poslanstvo bo spolnila, če se bo v medsebojni ljubezni vseh članov in v skupni molitvi v Bogu razodevala kot domače svetišče Cerkve.

Št. 2, Chicago, III. DRUŽABNI VE-ČER. Vse članice in prijatelji Zveze so vljudno vabljeni na t. zv. Penny Social, združen z družabnostjo in priljubljenimi igrami, v četrtek dne 9. novembra ob 7:30 uri zvečer v spodnji dvorani pri Sv. Štefanu. Pripeljite svoje prijatelje, ker obeta biti res vesel večer. Postreženo bo tudi z o-krepčili. Ves dobiček ja namenjen Božičnici naše podr.

Št. 3, Pueblo, Colo. — Počitniška doba je v kraju; upam, da ste se članice vrnile zdrave in srečno na svoje domove. Nahajamo se v slikoviti jesenski sezoni in nekaj mesecev se lahko pričakuje udobno vreme, da bomo lahko prišle na seje in nadaljevale z našim društvenim delom.
Prvi in glavni namen naše konvencije v Washingtonu je bil, vliti novega duha v organizacijo potom pom-nožitve novih članic. V teku je važna kampanja in prosi se lepo vse članice, da bi izkazale svojo hvaležnost do tistih, ki se zvesto udejstvujejo za močno in ugledno S.Ž.Z. Naša podružnica dopolnjuje 40 letnico obstoja, kar naj bi vas vse zanimalo, da storite nekaj za napredek in edini način je, da vpišete vsaj eno novo članico. Gotovo ima vsaka sorodnico ali prijateljico, ki bi pristopila, če bi stopile do nje ter jo navdušile za pristop.
Imele smo čast pozdraviti glavno tajnico Mrs. Albino Novak v svoji sredi. Vesela je bila srečati se z znankami in članicami in vzela si je čas, da smo obiskale bolne ustanovne članice, ki so rade prihajale na seje in pomagale dokler jim je zdravje dopuščalo.
Drage sestre, 40 let je dolga doba; med tem časom nas je za vedno zapustilo precejšno število članic. Dne
3.	septembra je umrla moja zvesta prijateljica Johanna Skul. Ona je v življenju posvetila mnogo svojih moči za druge in zapustila nešteto dobrih del. Njeno krsto je krasilo mno go vencev in cvetja, izkazi ljubezni od hvaležnih oseb. Dne 14. septembra se je rešila dolge bolezni sestra Cecilija Steblaj. Njena življenjska pot je bila trnjeva. Bila je deset let slepa. Ostala je vdova s šestimi otroci, katere je vzorno vzgojila. Mož in sin sta izgubila svoje življenje v premogorovu. Njeno plemenito srce je bilo združeno z delom samo za družino. Bila je blaga mati..
Preminil je Joseph Pograjc, soprog naše sestre Mary, ki je bil dolgo let bolan in nosil križ bolezni v upanju, da bo ozdravel. Vsi ga bomo pogrešali, ker je šel v prerani grob. — Nagle smrti je šel v večnost naš prijatelj Rafael Francel. Tudi on nas je prerano zapustil. Z Bogom vsi pokojni; tolaži nas misel, da pridemo tudi mi drug za drugim za vami. Težko je slovo, toda vemo, da se vidimo v slavi večne luči, saj bomo vsi poklicani na poslednjo pot. Vsem prizadetim preostalim izrekamo naše globoko sožalje.
Vljudno vabim v imenu podružnice vse članice in prijatelje na pokrivanje številk v nedeljo 19. novembra ob pol osmih zvečer. Vrši se v cerkveni dvorani. Srečni bodo dobili purane in vsakovrtne lepe dobitke. Zahvaljujemo se že v naprej za obilo u-deležbo,
V decembru se vrši glavna seja. Mladinski člani bodo prejeli lepa darila. Vrši se tudi volitev odbora za prihodnje leto. Matere ste prošene, da pripeljete otroke, da dobijo darila.
V bolnišnici se še vedno nahajajo sestre Josephine Smrajc, Mary Zupančič, Mary Golob in Anna Slobodnik. Vsem bolnim želimo ljubo zdravje.
V nedeljo 24. septembra sem bila navzoča na GO letnici društva Orel SNP.T, kjer sem bila predstavljena
kot državna predsednica za Colorado, program je vodil Mr. Frank Henigs-man.
Slavljenkam rojstnih dni v teh mesecih pošiljam najlepše čestitke in želje, da bi jih dočakale še mnogo v zdravju in zadovoljstvu!

St. 6, Barberton, O. — Prav imenitno smo praznovali 40 letnico ustanovitve naše podružnice skupno z državno konvencijo. Že zjutraj smo sp članice v velikem številu udeležile sv. maše v naši domači cerkvi Srca Jezusovega in večinoma smo prejele sv. obhajilo. Takoj po maši smo se podale v šolsko dvorano, ki je precej oddaljena od cerkve. Tam smo pričakale naše goste, ki jih je bilo kar lepo število, posebno iz Clevelanda.
V	imenu nas vseh od podr. št. 6, se vsem, ki ste se odzvale najtopleje zahvaljujem za vašo podporo naše podr. Ob priliki pa Vam bomo pokazale, da nismo pozabile Vaše po žrtvovalnosti. Ker ob tako velikem število slcoro ne more biti vsem natančno postreženo, Vas vse posetnike prosimo, da nam oprostite, če je bila kakšna neljuba pomota v postrežbi.
Clevelandski Glee Club nam je zapel nekaj najlepših pesmi. Zapele sta nam tudi dve domače zauber članice, Francka in Malka Petrič par fletnili pesmi. Vsem najiskrenejša zahvala.
Naša državna predsednica, Mary Bostian in gl. predsednica Tončka Turek sta imele lepe nagovore, enako tudi naša preds. Kelloran in tajnica Ožbolt. Prečltan Je tudi bil telegram ustanoviteljice M. Prisland in pismo gl. tajnice Albine Novak. Navzoč je bil tudi naš duhovni svetovalec Rev. Praznik in za stoloravnatelja je bil Mr. Lautar, kateremu velja naš poklon, ki je vse tako lepo izpeljal, kakor zna le on. Iz kuhinje so prijadrala okusna jedila, katera so pripravile naše članice pod vodstvom ses. Blažič. Dvorana je bila najljubše in najpomembnejše okrašena v pravem

Podružnica št. 3, Pueblo, Colorado je praznično obhajala 40 letnico obstoja in letno državno konvencijo 10. septembra. Med nami je bila priljubljena glavna tajnica Albina Novak, kar je bilo vsem v veselje. Ustanoviteljic imamo živečih še pet, toda navzoča je bila le Mary Bozaich, druge je bolezen obdržala doma.
Državna konvencija se je vršila v cerkveni dvorani. Sklenjeno je bilo, da bomo imele konvencijo vsako leto in prihodnja bo 19G8 v Crested Butte, Colorado. Zastopane so bile podružnice iz Canon City in Crested Butte ter naša podružnica št. 3. Upati je, da bodo lepi načrti prinesli mnogo napredka vsem podružnicam v državi.
Popoldne smo se zbrali v Minequa dvorani, kjer je bil serviran banket. Program je vodil obče poznani rojak John D. Butkovich, ki ima mnogo zaslug v tem oziru med nami. Lepo je predstavil vse navoče goste in pripravljen je bil tudi kratek program v petju in godbi. Med nami je bil naš župnik Rev. Daniel Gnidica ter Rev. Frank Kogovšek in župnik Leopold Mihelich iz Denverja. Mesto Pueblo je lepo zastopal Mr. Barry v spremstvu svoje soproge. Glavna govornica je bila naša glavna tajnica Albina Novak. Vsi navzoči smo pazno poslušali njen prisrčen govor. Ona je zares izvrstna govornica. Brzojavne čestitke so poslale naša častna predsednica Mrs. Marie Prisland, glavna predsednica Mrs. Antonija Turek, glavna podpredsednica Marie A. Floryan. Pismene čestitke smo prejele od Mrs. Mary Bostian, državna predsednica, Ohio in Michigan; Mrs. Mary Tomsic, državna predsednica Pennsylvania, od Antonije Kastelic, Kansas City in Mary Kolar iz Minnesote. Najlepša hvala vsem skupaj.
Lepo ze zahvaljujemo Mary Theresa Kalinger za lepo petje ter Andrew Gregorich za igrane polke na harmonike. Poskočne polke in valčke so za nas igrali Johnie Paucek, Frank Habich in Ben Charulo. Po programu se je razvila zabava in navzoči so se z veseljem zavrteli in zabavali v prijetni družbi. Bog nam daj zdravje in živ-vljenje, da bi imeli še mnogo tako lepih In prisrčnih sestankov.
Hvala lepa sestri Christine Konte, ki je pripeljala lepo skupino članic iz Canon City, številčno 14 oseb.

PRISRČNA HVALA, PUEBLO, COLORADO!
Uspeh proslave 40 letnice podružnice št. 3 je bil odličen v vseh ozirih. Vreme je bilo kot po naročilu lepo in sončno ter vsakega spravilo1 v dobro voljo. Zame je bil program tega dne v veliko zadovoljnost. Slovesna sveta maša in pridiga č. g. župnika Daniela Gnidica nam je dala obilo dušne hrane. Po maši državna konvencija, kjer so navzoče z navzdušenjem poudarjale veliko važnost napredka v mladini. Takoj po konvencij me je prijazna predsednica Mary Guzzol s svojim Cadillac avtomobilom peljala do radijo postaje, kjer 17 let vodi g. John Butkovich slovenski program in mi je dal na razpolago neomejen čas, katerega sem se poslužila za 15 minut. Po radio programu sem se kar naenkrat znašla v krasni dvorani Minnequa kluba, kjer je še sedelo do 200 oseb pri mizah, ki so čakali, da pričnejo z banketom. Jedilni list je bil zelo dobro sestavljen in izpeljan. Vsi smo rekli, da boljše bi ne moglo biti ter s ponosom pohvalili dobro kuhinjo, ki je pod nadzorstvom Slovenk. Gospod Butkovich je mojster kar se tiče stoloravnateljev. Šlo je vse tako lepo po redu, da je bilo veselje. In za nameček smo se pa še prav pošteno zavrteli. Občudovala sem prijaznost navzočih, ker po navadi se vidi, da morajo ženske same plesati, tukaj pa ni bilo tako, ker so moški korajžni in tudi radi plešejo.
S	kratkoma rečeno: Bilo je imenitno in lepše zabave ter pristne domače zabave ne pomnim, ki bi prekašala lep program, ki smo ga uživali v nedeljo 10. septembra v Puebli.
Vsem skupaj prav prisrčna hvala in še posebej sestri Anna Pachak in soprogu Johnu, čigar gost sem bila v njunem krasnem domu. Prisrčna hvala za postrežbo z avtomobilom sestri Simonich in Guzzol ter vsem odbornicam za lep sestanek in večerjo pred odhodom. Spomin na čas med vami mi bo vedno ostal med najprijetnejšimi.

slovenskem stilu po mladih članicah, Straub in Prašnik. Škoda, da je šla Slovenska himna tako neopaženo mimo. Na klavir je igrala mlada Ujčič. Na trompeto nam je eno zaigral mladi Prašnik. V veselem razpoloženju so se vračali udeleženci na svoje domove.
Vse članice ste vljudno prošene, da se gotovo udeležite letne seje v decembru, da se izvoli odbor za prihodnje leto.

Št. 10, Cleveland, O.—V septembru je bila prva seja jesenske sezone, katere se je udeležilo 13 članic, kar je pičlo število za našo podružnico. Prosim, drage sestre, da bi prišle in videle kako se posluje. Vedno imamo domačo zabavo. Sestra Josefina Bru-sič je praznovala svoj rojstni dan in nam prinesla nekaj v testo zavito in sladko kapljico. Vesele smo bile, da je bila med nami sestra Lojzka Čebular, ki je bila odsotna vsled bolezni. Tajnica Mary Camloh se se boljše počuti odkar se je vrnila iz bolnišnice. Poročala je, da dolarski prispevki gredo kar dobro naprej. Ne pozabite vpisati novo članico.

Št. 14, Euclid, O. — Naša oktober-ska seja, je bila prav dobro obiskana in zopet smo dobile dve nove članice, ki so: Mrs. Mihela Jene in Alma Trček. Dobrodošle med nami!
V	zadnjem mesecu je umrla naša dobro poznana ses. Mary Grl iz 200 Str. Bog ji daj večni mir in večna luč naj ji sveti.
Mrs. Tanko se je pa pri padcu ponesrečila in se precej poškodovala. Je še vedno bolana in ji želimo, da bi ji ljubi Bog dal ljubo zdravjo.
Kakor smo slišale, se je Mrs. Plevnik precej pozdravila. Našemu društvu je poslala zahvalno kartico, ker so jo naše članice v času bolezni o-bisltale.
Predsednica nam je tudi poročala, da se pri skupnih podružnicah raz-govarjajo o pripravah za skupno romanje članic na Božjo pot k Mariji Pomagaj v Kanado, če bi bilo dovolj zanimanja med članicami. Šle bi tudi pogledat v Montreal, kjer je bila svetovna razstava, če bi katero zanimalo, naj se priglasi po Novem letu.
Naša glavna predsednica Antonia Turek tudi priporoča, da bi Slovenci postavili kapelico Matere Božje v Washingtonu, D. C., ki bi služila Slovencem. Imenovala bi se Slovenska kapela, kakor jih imajo že drugi narodi. Potrebno bi bilo zbrati 70 tisoč dolarjev. Najprej bi se vprašalo društva za pomoč, kakor tudi posameznike. Bilo bi lepo za vse Slovence v Ameriki.
Omenim še to, da smo se 24. sept. odpeljale v Barberton na banket. Bilo nas je polni bus in bila je prav

Gertrude Previc Sheffler 1885—1967
V	globoki žalosti in s potrtimi srci poročamo, da je dne 17. septembra, 19G7 v pitsburški bolnišnici po dolgi bolezni preminula, Mrs. GERTRUDE PREVIC SHEFFLER, 409 Short St., Plum Boro, Pittsburgh, Pa.
Blaga pokojnica je živela v naselbini Center-Plum Boro od leta 1905 ko je prišla v Ameriko iz Slovenije. Rojena je bila dne 17. mar-
prijetna vožnja. Celo harmonikarja smo imeli. Bilo je res mnogo lepega petja tja in nazaj. Na banketu v Barbertonu pa so nam tudi dobro postregli. Tudi me smo zapele na odru nekaj narodnih pesmi in tako počastile naše slavljenke od podr. št. G. Naučil nas je naš pevski voditelj, Frank Gorenšek.
V	društveno blagajno so darovale ta večer: Mrs. Rupret, Mrs. Kicher, Mrs. Plevnik. Bog vam povrni na vašem zdravju. Vsem lep pozdrav, Antonia Sustar
Št. 15, Cleveland, O. — Za nami so počitnice in gorko vreme. Danes je hladno in kar čutimo, da ni več daleč do zimskih časov. Srčna hvala za darilo v blagajno, sestri Mary Zabukovec.
Jennie Resnik je prestala težko o-peracijo. Sedaj je že doma. V bolnici se nahaja tudi Verona Škufca. — Njima in vsem bolnim članicam želimo, ljubega zdravja, ki je največje bogastvo na svetu.
Naša zapisnikarica Mary Filipovič, je bila napadena, ko se je vračala na dom iz banketa, podružnice št. G, ki so obhajali 40 letnico ustanovitve. Dva čmca sta jo hudo potolkla in jo oropala vsega kar je imela pri sebi. Želimo ji, da bi kmalu ozdravela.
Že sedaj vljudno vabim na decem-bersko sejo, ki bo glavna in bo treba razmotrivati glede delovanja prihodnjega leta. Imele bomo tudi Božičnico
ca 1885 v Podgori v Poljanski Dolini nad Škofjo Loka v Sloveniji. Njeni starši so že pokojni George in Urša Dolenc Previc iz Podgore. Pokojna je bila poročena z že pokojnim John Sheffler, ki je prišel v Ameriko iz Oselice v Jugoslaviji in je umrl dne 30. maja, 195G.
Slovesna sv. maša zadušnica je bila brana dne 20. septembra, 19G7 v cerkvi Sv. Janeza Baptista v Unity, Pa. Mašo je daroval domači župnik Rev. T. R. Bartley skupno z družinskim prijateljem in sorodnikom Rev. Leonard Bogolin iz Detroita. Pogreb je bil na pokopališču Pluni Creek.
Pokojna je bila članica podr št. 9G SŽZ v Universal, Pa. od leta 1939.
Prisrčna zahvala velja vsem številnim prijateljem, znancenin in sorodnikom za njihove izraze sožalja in vso izkazano prijaznost v teh bridkih dneh izgube naše ljube matere, stare in pra-stare matere.
Posebna zahvala podr. Slovenske Ženske Zveze iz Universal za molitev sv. rožnega venca v Roth pogrebnemu zavodu in za častno stražo in pogrebne obrede pri odprtem grobu.

Št. 19, Eveleth, Minn. — Seja v avgustu je bila dobro obiskana, lahko bi bila še več članic navzočih, ker vreme smo imeli toplo. Čeprav se vršijo seje popoldne, ima vsaka svoj izgovor. Sestra Sedaj je prinesla lep kejk in sladoled, sestra Zadkovich je pa prinesla prav okusne kifelce in jabolčne zavitke. Da je bila miza še bolj polna dobrot je pa sestra Pollack prinesla sirov štnidelj. Pripravile so dobro kavo, tako, da smo se imele prav izvrstno.
Sestra Erklautz, ki je zastopala podružnico na zadnji zvezini konvenciji, nam je lepo pojasnila sklepe. Prinesla je tudi slike, katere smo gledale z zanimanjem. Pohvalila je delo pri pripravah od Irene Planinšek in Corinne Leskovar. Meni je bilo težko, ker sem imela priliko biti navzoča, ampak mi zdravnik ni dovolil na pot vsled bolezni na nogah. Vsem, ki ste zdaj v glavnem uradu iskreno čestitamo in želimo mnogo uspeha pri delu za dobrobit Zveze.
V	nedeljo 10. septembra, smo se u-deležile Minnesota Zvezin dan, ki se je vršil v Soudan. Zbrale smo se skupno s članicami iz Virginia, Gilbert, Aurora in Biwabik ter potovale s busom. Več jih šlo v privatnih
karah. Ko smo prišle k cerkvi, nas je prisrčno pozdravila naša urednica, Corinne, z ljubkim smehljajem. Povabljene smo bile na kavo in pecivo, da smo se malo okrepčale pred sveto mašo, ki je bila darovana ob enajstih. Po maši smo šle v cerkveno dvonano, kjer se je vršila kratka seja katero je vodila državna predsednica Barbara Rosandich. Prebran in sprejet je bil zapisnik zadnje seje in nato smo slišale poročila glavnih odbornic Anne Podgoršek, Barbara Ro-sandich in Corinne. Razložile so nam konvenčne sklepe ter povedale, da se bo vršila konvencija v letu 1970 v Cleveland-Euclid, Ohio. Sklenjeno je bilo soglasno, da se vrši konvencija za državo Minnesoto v letu 1968 v Nashwauk. Po seji smo se podale v avditorij, kjer je bil serviran banket. Vsa čast in priznanje za prijazno in točno postrežbo in za okusno kosilo. Miza je bila bogato naložena z raznimi dobrotami. V imetnu vseh navzočih od št. 19 izrekam pohvalo vsem, ki so se trudili s pripravami in postrežbo. Program je odlično vodila sestra Yapel. Vse smo z navdušenjem in velikim zanimanjem poslušale našo ljubeznivo urednico Corinne Leskovar. Le škoda, dani ostala par dni v Minnesoti, da bi obiskala naselbine po železnem okrožju. Vesele in zadovoljne smo se poslovile in bus nas je odpeljal na domove. Ob slovesu smo si druga drugi voščile: na svidenje prihodnje leto!
Nabralo se je precej novic od zadnjega dopisa. Sprejele smo novo članico, Elizabeth Manty, hčerka pokojne sestre Elizabeth Rakovetz, ki je umrla 28. marca. Ko je videla naše lepe obrede ob času, ko smo spremile pokojno mater na zadnji poti, je bila globoko ginjena in to jo je navdušilo za pristop v našo sredo. Izrazila je iskreno zahvalo vsem članicam. Lepo so se zahvalile tudi hčerke pokojne sestre Cecilije Kapsh in isto hčerke pokojne Prances Habjan. Molitev pri krsti in potem na dan pogreba je napravil globok vtis na vse in zlasti preostale sorodnike
Nastopil je mesec November v katerem se spominjamo vernih duš. Z žalostjo v srcih bodo prižgane sveče na grobovih in kdor je izgubil mater, o-četa, sina, hčer, sestro, brata in ostale sorodnike, se bo gotovo spomnil pokojnih v molitvi.
Naše sožalje sestri Anni Bizlaj nad izgubo ljubega moža. Pred par leti sta šla na obisk rodne domovine in lo je bil zanj zadnji sloves od sorodnikov. Ob takih žalostnih dogodkih pride človeku v misel, kako važen je obisk svojcev v domovini, ker morda je to zadnjikrat, da se vidijo živi. V imenu vseh članic isrekam globoko sožalje preostalim. Pokojni je prestal vse zemeljsko trplejenje in bo užival mirno spanje, kamor mu bomo vsi sledeli.
Za poročati imam tudi veselo novico, da se je oženil John Primozicli, sin
Lillian in John Primozich. Mesec pred tem je pa doletela velika čast hčerko družine Primozich, ko je bila izbrana za “kraljico mesta Eveleth”, katero je praznovalo 75 letnico obstoja. Iskrene čestitke!
Dne 16. septembra smo se zbrali na srebnem jubileju javnega dela kongresnika John Blatnika. Bila je to ena najbolj oglaševanih slavnosti, kar jih pomnimo. Med gostji so bili vsi odlični zastopniki od najbolj važnih pozicij v državi Minnesota. Več o tem bo poročano v angleškem delu Zarje. Najsrčnejše čestitke!
V	Avgustu se je oglasila teta štorklja v družini hčerke Mihelich in sta s tem veselim dogodkom postala Mr. in Mrs. Mihelich zopet stara starša.
Več naših članic pohaja v višje šole.
V	Vila Scholastica višjo šolo v Duluth, je šla Reneta Gorichan. — Dne 16. septembra se je poročila Linda Jane LaDue, ženin je Joe Drobnich. Ona je vnukinja naše zapisnikarice Prances Sterle. Vsem želimo obilo sreče in zadovoljstva. Važno službo je prevzela Judith Mohar, katero bo gotovo odlično izvršila.
Vsem članicam, ki so na bolniški postelji in tistim, ki se nahajajo v bolnišnici želimo ljubo zdravje. Te so Mary Isaacson, Rose Jerome, Perovšek in Sherše. Lepo pozdravljamo vse sestre, ki so v Nursing domovih. Naj vsem podeli ljubi Jezus zdravje in olajša trpljenje.
Tem potom se prisrčno zahvaljujem vsem ki ste se spomnile mojega rojstnega dne in še posebej sestri Anni Pachak za pozdrave iz Pueblo.

Št. 20, Joliet, III. — V mesecu novembru, ki je posvečen Vernim dušam, se bomo spominjale tudi me, pri podružnici na naše pokojne članice, ki so nas zapustile v tem letu. Z njimi smo bile skupaj pri sejah ali drugih prireditvah, toda prišel je tako hitro čas, da so se poslovile od nas. Ne smemo jih pozabiti ter se večkrat vmolitvah spomnimo na njih in molimo za njihov večni mir in pokoj!
Dne 26. okt. je minulo 30 let odkar je nenadoma umrla moja ljuba mama, Mary Setina. Na njenem spomeniku je zapisano:
“Kadar te spominek tale, spomin name,
Prosim, zmoli ‘Oče naš’ vsaj enkrat zame.
Milo, kličem, iz črne jame,
Moli, o prijatelj zame.”
Naša prva seja v jesenski sezoni se je vršila 17. sept. Na seji je predsednica poročala, da smo med tem časom izgubile kar tri članice: Bar-
bara Kobe, Veronika Stimac in Jean M. Težak. Za pokoj njihovih duš smo članice stoje molile. Predsednica, Ema Planinšek je tudi povdarila njihove zasluge in dela v življenju. Naj vse v miru počivajo.
Dalje je bilo poročano na seji, da je naša dolgoletna članica, Amalia Plese iz 1800 N. Hickory St., že več let bolna, priklenjena na posteljo in je v enakem stanju še vedno. Na seji je predsednica priporočala, da se jo članice spomnijo z karticami, da se ji krajša čas.
Dalje je tudi že več tednov bolna Jennie Bambick iz N. Hickory St.
Dalje je bila premeščena Miss Katherine Butala iz St. Joseph bolnišnice v Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital, 1401 So. California ave., Chicago, 111. 60608. Vsem bolnim članicam želimo da čimprej okrevajo. Tudi onim za katere nam ni znano da so bolne, naj se čimprej vrnejo v naše vrste in pridejo na sejo. Leto se bliža k koncu, treba je, da imate plačene prispevke. Pridite na sejo 19. nov.

Št. 25, Cleveland, Ohio. — Zopet se je približala slikovita jesenska doba. Želim, da bi imeli mnogo toplih dni. ker v poletju ni bilo vročine.
Naša seja v septembru je bila lepo obiskana. Navzočih je bilo 28 članic, kar je lepo število. Praznovale smo rojstne dneve od sestre Josephine Golinski in Jennie Strnad. Med nami je bila tudi Vicki Faletič, katero je resna bolezen mučila več časa. Slavljenki sta prinesli okusno pecivo in tudi za poplahniti. Viki ima vedno kakšno dobro idejo v korist ročne blagajne. V soboto 30. septembra se je oženil njen sin. Nevesta je Mili Bukovšek. Poročno slavje je bilo v Slovenskem domu na St. Clairju. Mladima zakoncama želimo obilo sreče in božjega blagoslava.
Vabim ms vse na sejo v novembru in potem na glavno sejo v decembru. Tiste, ki ste zaostale pri plačevanju asesmenta ste prijazno prošene, da pridete gotovo poravnat preden bo leto zaključeno. Po vsaki seji imamo prijetno domačo zabavo in prigrizek. Vas vse lepo pozdravljam in na svidenje na seji!

Št. 24, La Salle, III. — Na dan naše oktoberske seje, je bilo res lepo vreme, zato bi se lahko' več članic udeležilo seje. Sklenjeno je bilo, da bomo v novembru imele t. zv. pot luck in sicer v pondeljek, dne 6. novembra zvečer. Tudi volitve bodo v novembru, mesto v decembru, ker je takrat vedno dosti snega in mrzlo, da ne morejo članice priti na dec. sejo.
Zato vljudno vabim, da pridete v velikem številu na to sejo in prinesite s seboj kak diš in za meso pa bo odbor preskrbel. Več o tem boste
IZLETI S.Ž.Z. V STARI KRAJ V LETU 1967
Prišel je že tisti čas, ko se lahko rezervira prostor za potovanje v stari kraj. Za prihodnje leto je na razpolago več datumov in ti so za različne dobe, namreč od treh tednov do štirih mesecev.
Cena za skupno potovanje bo zopet za par sto dolarjev nižja kot je za posamezne sezonske izletnike. Ako bo 50 ali več potnikov v eni odrasli grupi, potem bo cena iz New Yorka do Brnik (I,jublj'ana), samo $339.00 za odraslo osebo. K tej vsoti se doda samo osem dolarjev za pisarniške stroške. To poročamo sedaj, da ne bo kasneje nesporazum pri	računu.	K tej	svoti	se doda tudi in-
surance, ker sleherni želi vzeti osebno zavarovalnino od pet tisoč dolarjev naprej, kakor tudi za prtljago za časa potovanja. Zavarovalnina je priporočljiva, ker nihče ne ve svojo usodo,	zato je	dobro	imeti	zavarovalnino za
vsak slučaj.
Letos je večina skupin štela nad 50 potnikov, ne pa vse. Kadar jih ni 50, otroci so šteti samo za polovico, je po pravilih letalnih družb, svota $395.00 za osebo ali $56. več kot	za skupine 50	oseb.	To je še vseeno
par sto dolarjev	nižje kot	redna	sezonska cena. Za leto
1968 so vse skupine planirane za 50 in več oseb, ker je izredno veliko zanimanja za skupno potovanje po ceni $339.00.
Za prihodnje leto imamo zagotovilo, da bo letalska zveza na Brnik (Ljubljana) od maja do septembra definitivno redna in ne bo nobenih zamud s prihodi. Kolandrova potniška pisarna je naredila sigurno1 rezervacijo za odhode vseh skupin ob napovedanem času. V slučaju vremenskih neprilik, kar bi pomenilo zakasneli prihod v
New York, bo letalska družba poskrbela prenočišče v hotelu brezplačno in bo za. nadaljevanje vožje v USA urejeno za naslednji dan. Sorodnikom se bo telefonično sporočilo, kdaj naj pridejo čakat na letališče v svojem mestu. Skušalo se bo narediti vse za udobno potovanje in splošno zadovoljnost skupin.
Datumi za naše izletnike so sledeči v letu 1968:
Za	tri tedne: 6. junija do 27. junija;
Za	štiri tedne: 10. junija do 9. julija; ali 1.	julija	do
30. julija;
Za sedem tednov: 3. junija do 23. julija;
Za osem tednov: 17. junija do 13. avgusta;
Za 16 tednov (štiri mesece: 27. maja do 17. septembra.
Važno pojasnilo: Datumi odhoda in vrnitve morajo biti odločeni ob času rezervacije. Da bi se potovalo tja in potem vrnilo preje ali pozneje kot se vrne skupina, to ni mogoče razen, če se plača polna vsota za eno smer, ker znižana cena za skupinski vozni listek velja le za datum, kot je bil prvotno rezerviran. To je predpis letalskih	družb, katerega se ne more spremeniti.

V	bolnišnici se je nahajala Nežka Novlan. Mini Carter, Pali Ksiazek (Šerman), se zdravijo doma. V bolnišnici pa se še nahaja naša bivša blagajničarka Mary Kastigar in Mary Savnik. Vsem ljubega zdravja.
Naša članica Mary Struna in njen soprog Frank, St., sta slavila v oktobru 57 letnico zakonskega življenja. Želimo jima še mnogo v let v zdravju in sreči v krogu njune družine.
Vse tiste, ki ste zaostale z ases-mentom, prosim, da pridete na sejo ali pa na moj dom, ali pa pošljite po pošti, ker leto tako hitro teče in kmalu bo nastopilo novo leto.

Št. 26, Pittsburgh, Pa. — Jesen je zopet tu in z njo tudi mrzlo vreme, a s slabim vremenom so končane tudi naše zunanje prireditve. Naša prireditev Penna Zvezin Dan z banketom, se je dobro obnesla. Udeležilo se je večina podružnic. Naša sosednja podr. iz Johnstowna nas je kar iznenadila z 12 članicami in je prav mala, zato jim velja še posebna hvala. In tudi so spi-ejele, da bodo gostiteljice Državnega Dneva za prihodnje leto in tako jim bomo pa me vrnile njihov obisk.
Zdaj pa zopet vabimo naše članice na sejie, ki so sicer precej dobro o-biskane, pa naj bo poletni ali zimski
čas, pa jih nič ne moti. Upamo, da se bo udeležilo več ta mladih članic naših sej, ker jih potrebujemo za odbor, da ne bomo vedno ene in iste, iz enega leta v drugo zmeraj po starem. Jaz mislim odstopiti in bi bilo lepo, če bi bila ena od mlajših na mojem mestu, da bi podr. še bolj napredovala, ker sedaj je naša podr. v najlepšem redu.
Za našo cerkev v Dragatušu, se je toliko ljudi priglasilo in poslali so darila v manjših ali večjih zneskih. Veliko se jih je oglasilo na dopis v KSKJ Glasilu, katerega je objavil moj mož in tudi kar sem jaz napisala v naši SŽZ Zarji. Ko še kaj več naberemo, bomo vse skupaj poslali v stari kraj. Tudi bomo dali obvestilo v listih, da bo vsak natančno vedel, koliko je vsega skupaj nabranega.

Št. 32, Euclid, Ohio — Po dolgem času se zopet oglašam. Zaradi pluč-nice, ki me je napadla v maju, sem bila v bolnici, toda hvala Bogu, sem okrevala. Naj se tem potem iskreno zahvalim vsem za voščilne karte, darove in obiske. Naj vam Bog bogato poplača z ljubim zdravjem.
Po oktoberski seji smo imele lepo zabavo in obhajale smo naše obletnice. Škoda, da ni bilo večje udeležbo.

Klun in Mary Vodičar sta šle po United States.
Ena naših ustanoviteljic je 8. julija bila 80 let mlada, pa še fejst izgleda, kako pa se počuti seveda najbolje ve ona sama. Želimo ji ljubega zdravja še veliko let, ses. Frances Kerenčič.

Št. 42, Maple Hts., O. — Naša septemberska	seja zaradi slabega
vremena ni bila najboljše obiskana, smo pa me ostale bile boljše postrežene z okusnim jabolčnim štrudel-nom, s katerim so nam postregle Mrs. Simončič in Mili Lipnos, ki sta slavile svoje rojstne dneve. Angela Peško se ni mogla udeležiti seje in nas postreči s krofi, ker je zbolela
l ko to pišem je že dobra), toda sem prepričana, da	jih bomo deležne na
prihodnji seji.	Tudi njen rojstni dan
je v septembru, tako tudi Antonia Matas. Vsem, ki imate rojstne dneve te zadnje mesece v letu, želim vse najboljše in še mnogo rojstnih dni.

V SPOMIN BLAGI SESTRI
Frances Veseli
Št. 81, Keewatin, Minn. — Znancem, prijateljem in sorodnikom sporočam, (la je neizprosna smrt posegla v hišo moje sestre in ji pretrgala nit življenja. Dne 21. avgusta je v visoki starosti preminula Frances Veseli, dekliško ime Prijatelj (po domače Jer-načeva), doma iz Malih Lašč, fara Vel. Lašče. Dolgo let je bolehala na sladkorni bolezni in smrt jo je rešila trpljenja. Hči jo je peljala k zdravniku na pregled, pa je na poti lepo mirno za vedno zaspala v autu.
Pokojna je imela 10 otrok, 4 fante in 6 hčera in eno je še posvojila iz sirotišnice. En sin je izgubil življenje v zadnji vojski, ko je bil na tajnem poletu nekje v Evropi. Za njo žaluje 10 živečih otrok, ki so: sin Captain Frank G. Veseli v Washington, D. C., Charles, v Omaha, Neb., Henry v Rolling Meadows, III. ter hčere:	Mrs. William Nadeau, Mrs.
Emil Broberg, Hibbing, Minn., Mrs. Andrew liustik, Mrs. Joseph Padden, Chicago, 111., Mrs. Rose Coulter, Grand Rapids, 'Minn., Mrs. Don Michalsky,
gajničarka Cecilia Hočevar in Pauline Hribar. Zdravja je morala iskati v bolnici tudi Agnes Vrček, sedaj je doma in se počuti boljše. Bolj rahlega zdravja je tudi Ana Prhne, Mrs. Legan in Jennie Intihar, katero že dolgo mučijo noge, da težko hodi.
Daj Bog, da bi vse, ki ste bolane, se pozdravile in da bi še lahko pose-čale naše seje.
Dne 24. septembra je minulo 44 let odkar sta se poročila Angela Vidic in Frank Peško. Dolga so leta, ali Angelci se ne pozna, je še vedno ista, vedno vesela in nasmejana. Ker sem bila ravno njih družica, jima še osebno želim, veliko skupnih let in da bi bila vsaj tako pri zdravju, kot sta doslej. Daj Bog!
14 letnico zakona stil tudi obhajala
Floodwood, Minn., Mrs. Joe Bolf, Keewatin in mene sestro, Mary Kolar. Nečake in nečakinje ter več drugih sorodnikov tukaj in v Sloveniji. Članica SŽZ je bila od ustanovitve in nekaj let je bila zapisnikarica. Spadala je v cerkev Matere Božje. Bila je tudi Gold Star mother.
Pokopana je bila 24. avgusta ob veliki udeležbi sorodnikov, prijateljev in znancev. Sv. mašo zadušnico je daroval domači g. župnik Fr. Patrick McEnerey in k večnemu počitku je bila položena na Maple Hill pokopališče poleg moža, ki je umrl 1. 19G0.
Zvezine članice so se udeležile v polnem številu in jo pospremile na njeni zadnji poti, ji poklonile bele nageljne na njeno krsto. Sestra Ann General je prečitala zadnji pozdrav v imenu vseh članic. Naj blaga sestra počiva mirno v ameriški zemlji, saj je tu živela črez 60 let. Za vedno se je združila z možem. Tam ni več bolečin, vse je prestano in Bog jima daj večni mir in pokoj in naj jima sveti večna luč. Molita za nas, dokler se še mi ne združimo, saj sveti križ nam govori, da vidimo se nad zvezdami
Ker sem ravno pri pisanju, naj še malo poročam, kaltO' deluje naša podružnica. Seje so jako lepo obiskane, imamo precejšnje število novih mladih članic in se jako zanimajo. Upam, da bo tako ostalo za naprej. Ako bo sloga, pa se bo lahko vodilo naprej.
Prihodnja seja bo zadnji teden v novembru. Vse članice ste prošene, da se te seje udeležite, ker bo zadnja v tem letu in bomo imele precej važnih zadev za mzmotrivati.
Seje se vršijo pri članicah na domovih, zato je bolj veselo in kratkočasno, ker izgleda kakor ena velika družina.

hitro teče in približali so se že mrzli jesenski dnevi. Naš Penna državni dan, ki se je vršil 24. septembra pri podružnici št. 26 v Pittsburghu je prav lepo uspel. Bila je velika u-deležba. Lepa hvala vsem, ki ste se udeležile Zvezinega dneva in državne konvencije posebno še članicam št. 88 iz Johnstowna, Pa., ki so prišle od daleč. Imele smo čast, ko je bila med nami naša gl. tajnica Mrs. Albina Novak. Članice so jo veselo pozdravile, posebno še tiste, ki je niso prej osebno poznale.
Imela je lep govor, povedala je veliko zanimivega, posebno še o kapeli, Iti jo nameravamo postaviti Slovenci v Washingtonu, D. C. Najlepša hvala Mrs. Trontel in vašim članicam in Mr. Lokar za lepo vodeni program.
Prihodnje leto se bo vršila državna konvencija v Johnstown, Pa. Prevzele so članice št, S8. Lepa hvala za poslane čestitke, Mrs. Prisland, dalje drž. preds. Mary Bostian in drž. preds, Anna Pachak. Jove Lucas je tudi lepo igral.
Lepe čestitke k rojstnemu dnevu Mrs. Novak in želim še mnogo srečnih in zdravih obletnic.

Št. 96, Universal, Pa. — Z žalostnim srcem moram poročati, da smo izgubile eno naših dobrih članic; sestra Jerica Šiflarč je preminula 17. sept. 1967. Rojena je bila v vasi Podgora v Polanski Dolini, pošta Gorenja Vas nad Škofjo Loko, župnija Stara Ose-lica. K večnemu počitku smo jo spremile ob veliki udeležbi iz pogrebnega zavoda Harold Roth v cerkev Sv. Janeza Krstnika. Pokojna je bila članica tudi drugih društev: Marije Vne-bovzete št. 2'10, Amer. Bratrske Zveze št. 33 in SNPJ št. 141. Pogreb se je vršil 20. sept. na pokopališče New Texas, Pa. Tukaj zapušča Albino Kosmach, ki je tudi naša članica, dalje Mary, Julia, Florence, George in John ter več vnukov in vnukinj. Bila je vedno vesele narave. Ljubila je rože in vrt, kjer je vedno' pridelovala solato prav zgodaj v sezoni. Bila je dobra mati njene družine, ki je bodo pogrešali, kakor tudi me članice. Njen pogreb je bil veličasten ob veliki u-deležbi prijateljev. Naše članice so molile rožni venec skupno z društvom Marije Vnebovzete ob krsti in so bile tudi za častno stražo ob rakvi. Pogrebci so bili od društev KSKJ, ABZ in SNPJ. Ljuba Jerica, počivaj v miru v blagoslovljeni ameriški zemlji in lahka naj ti bo gruda te naše druge domovine.
Pozdravljam vse članice, posebno še urednico.

HI, BOYS AND GIULS!
All Saints Day is a universal Feast Day—a special day to invoke our Heavenly intercessors. Even the United States has its own patron saint, ’['he Immaculate Conception.
A newborn child is the occasion of bestowing a name. This decision may be made ’hurriedly, while at other times it is momentous and greatly deliberated.
A child perhaps is named after some relative and many times after their own parents. Or it is named after persons of great importance and in public life.
A child may be named after a saint on whose feast day it was born or in appreciation to a saint for a favor received. And possibly it is given a name whose saint represents a particluar vocation in life.
As a member of God’s earthly kingdom, why were you so named?
While on the subject of Saints, all have symbols. St. Peter’s is the Keys, showing that Our Lord gave him the Keys to Heaven. A dragon symbolizes St. George, who once killed a fierce dragon. St. Jerome is pictured with a lion since this very wise and holy man removed a thorn gently and without fear from the lion’s paw.
The Little Flower of Jesus promised to shower roses from Heaven. Thus you’ll find St. Therese holding a huge bouquet of roses. A musical instrument as the organ or harp is often pictured with St. Cecilia and St. Agnes is shown with a lamb, a sign of purity.
Certain vocations in life have special patron saints. St. Joseph was appointed to watch over workingmen of all kins; St. Albert guides the minds of scientists and mathematicians; St. Vincent is in charge of winegrowers; St. Thomas Aquinas oversees students; St. Andrew protects the fishermen; St. Stephen keeps a vigil on all bricklayers and stonesetters; St. Anne busies herself with housekeepers and housewives; St. Elizabeth of Hungary intercedes lor the bakers with St. Martha looking out for the cooks; youth may look to St. Agnes and St. Aloysius for special patronizing.
Our Lady of Lourdes is invoked against all bodily ills. But by long established devotion the following saints are invoked against: Cancer— St. Peregrine, Colic—St. Agapitus, Diseases of Eye—St. Lucy, Family Troubles—St. Eustachius, Food Diseases—St. Victor, Gout—St. Andrew; for perseverance in prayer—St. Monica; to obtain a good husband—St. Joseph and to obtain a good wife— St. Anne.

And then there’s St. David, known as the patron saint of poets. From the Psalms of the Old Testament King David’s number 22 is a favorite of my eldest daughter:
“The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want.
In verdant pastures he gives me repose;
Beside restful waters he leads me; he refreshes my soul.
He guides me in right paths for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk in the dark valley I fear no evil; for you are at my side;
With your rod and your staff that give me courage.
You spread the table before me in the sight of my foes;
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Only goodness and kindness follow me all the days of my life;
And I shall dwell in the house of the LORD for years to come.”
From a high school English notebook, poetry is the “communication of feeling and thought, through the careful arrangement of words for their sound, rhythm and connotation as well as meaning.”
Poetry is older than prose having existed before there was any recorded history.
A poem is written to combine feelings with ideas and to arouse the feelings and imagination of the reader. This was demonstrated many times by our young poetess Sharon Planinšek, whose poems have appeared on the Junior Page.
Poetry teaches important lessons of life and is intended also to give pleasure. As a class assignment a poem can be poetic labor, but then on the other hand a poem can be poetic fun.
Since our two sons celebrate their birth dates this month, I thought it fitting to include this poem written by our second daughter as a class assignment:
Brothers
Many girls have little brothers, Who are crabby and a bother.
Yet they are also cute and sweet, Though with them the house ne’er stays neat.
Today they are so very small,
But someday they’ll be great and tall. There wouldn’t be such pleasant fun Without that precious little one.
There is 1 know one thing better Than having a little brother—
And that’s an older one with pals. Who brings them to the house as well.
