Towerjeva komisija zelo kritična do Reagana in njegovih najožjih svetovalcev glede iransko-contra zadeve — Regan kmalu odide
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Včeraj je posebna komisija, ki jo je bil imenoval predsednik Reagan in ji dal nalogo, razčistiti iransko-contra zadevo in pripraviti poročilo o svojem.delu, to poročilo izročila Reaganu. Poročilo, ki je na razpolago javnosti, je zelo kritično do samega Reagana, njegovih najožjih svetovalcev, in drugih vladnih uslužbencev. Komisiji je načeloval bivši republikanski senator John Tower, konservativec, ki je sicer Reaganu politično zelo naklonjen, druga člana pa sta bila bivši demokratski senator Edmund Muskie, ki je služil nekaj časa kot državni tajnik ZDA, in upokojeni gen. Brent Scowcrof't, ki je bil Svetovalec za nacionalno varnost v Gerald Fordovi administraciji.
Reagan je izrazil svojo hvaležnost komisiji in rekel, da o vsebini poročila ne bo komentiral, dokler ga ne temeljito prebere, kar bo storil v naslednjih dneh. Prihodnji teden bo predsednik govoril ameriški javnosti po televiziji o svojem reagiranju na poročilo in na nasvete, ki jih je komisija podala v poročilu.
Komisija je ugotovila med drugim, da je predsednik Reagan zelo malo vedel o podrobnostih v zvezi z iransko pobudo, v sestankih z izvrševalci te pplitike pa se ni zanimal za podrobnosti. Reaganovi svetovalci, predvsem tu Donald Regan, ki vodi predsednikov štab v Beli hiši, in adm. John Poindexter, takratni svetovalec za nacionalno varnost, niso hoteli Reagana motiti s takimi podrobnostmi. Gre tu za skupno odgovornost, trdi Towerjeva komisija, vendar pripominja, da so bili Reaganovi svetovalci dolžni pomagati predsedniku k popolnejšemu razumevanju iranske pobude, tega pa niso storili.
Dokaj neodgovorno je bilo tudi ravnanje državnega tajnika Georgea Shultza in obrambnega tajnika Caspera Weinbergerja. Ta dva sta sicer izrazila nasprotovanje iranski pobudi, a sta se potem v glavnem umaknila in ne igrala nobene vloge več. To je bila napaka, pravi komisija.
Komisija je zaključila, da je iranska pobuda temeljila predvsem na to, da bi bili izpuščeni ameriški talci v Libanonu. Morda je res bilo zanimanja za obsežnejše odpiranje poti k novim odnosom z Iranom, vendar dejansko je šlo za izpustitev talcev. Ta politika je bila zgrešena in celo protiučinkovita, ker je vodila do novih ugrabitev talcev. Reagan je v svojih javnih izjavah od novembra lani, ko je postala zadeva znana, trdil, da je bila cilj iranske pobude navezovanje stikov z »zmernejšimi« elementi v iranskem vodstvu. Komisija je v celoti zavrnila to verzijo.
Jasno je, da bodo politične posledice za Reaganovo administracijo obsežne in v glavnem tudi negativne. Nihče ne dvomi več, da bo moral podati ostavko v naslednjih dneh Donald Regan, ki je videti zadnje dni zelo potrt. Vendar ima Bela hiša težave z imenovanjem njegovega naslednika. Vsaj eden od možnih kandidatov, bivši senator Paul Laxalt, je imenovanje že odklonil. Laxalt pravi, da razmišlja o možni predsedniški kandidaturi prihodnje leto.
V težavah je podpredsednik Bush, ki sicer ni neposredno močno kritiziran v komi-sijevem poročilu, a je tesno povezan z Reaganom in njegovo politiko. Komisija je priznala, da ni mogla odkriti dosti podatkov o uporabi denarja, pridobljenega od prodaje js/j'X
orožja Iranu, za financiranje nikaragveških contra gverilcev. Bush je osebno zelo povezan s podpiranjem gverilcev na različne načine, tudi pol- oz. neuradne. Politični analitiki v Washingtonu poudarjajo, da je bila preiskava Towerjeve komisije dejansko najbolj prijateljska oz. nepristranska od vseh, ki so še v teku ali se pripravljajo. Preiskave, ki jih bodo izvedli kongresni odbori, kjer bodo igrali glavno vlogo Reaganu in republikancem nenaklonjeni demokrati, utegnejo biti še bolj škodljive za predsednika in tiste, ki so mu blizu, kot je npr. Bush.
Veliko je odvisno od tega, pravijo analitiki kot tudi ugledni demokrati in republikanci, kako bo Reagan reagiral na poročilo Towerjeve komisije. Ako predsednik ne bo mogel vzeti v roke iniciativo, bosta zadnji dve leti njegovega predsednikovanja paralizirani. Reaganovi zagovorniki pa poudarjajo, da je bil predsednik v težavah že večkrat v njegovi politični karieri in je vedno »okreval« in pozneje dosegel še večje uspehe. Znakov, da mu bo to zopet uspelo, še ni, soglašajo opazovalci političnih razmer.

Bejrut, Libanon — Poveljnik sirijskih
enot, ki so zasedle zahodni del Bejruta, je dejal, da se Sirija ne bo zanimala za možno reševanje tujcev, ki so v rokah muslimanskih skrajnežev. Gen. Ghazi Kenaao je rekel, da talci niso vojaška, ampak politična zadeva. Sirija želi, da bi bili talci izpuščeni, je nadaljeval Kenaan, a ne preko vojaškega posega. Gen. Kenaan je rekel, da so njegovi vojaki že zaprli 70 »pisarn« oboroženih muslimanskih borcev, ubili 23 šiitskih borcev in 15 drugih oboroženih oseb, ter priprli 20 oseb. Namen sirijske zasedbe je napraviti konec nekontroliranemu vojskovanju različnih muslimanskih skupin mestu v okolici. Ta cilj dosežemo, je odločno povedal gen. Kenaan.
Moskva, ZSSR — Včeraj je ZSSR izvedla podzemeljski jedrski poskus, prvi v zadnjih 19 mesecih. Predstavnik obrambnega ministrstva je dejal, da je bila ZSSR prisiljena k temu poskusu, ker je Reaganova administracija odklonila sodelovanje v moratoriju o podzemeljskih jedrskih poskusov, ki ga je bila proglasila Sovjetska zveza. Sovjeti še vedno trdijo, da so pripravljeni na obnovitev moratorija, ako se jim želijo pridružili ZDA.
Arlington, Va. — Umrl je 72 let stari
George S. Musulin, ki je vodil 3-člansko ekipo pripadnikov ameriškega OSS, ki se je s padali spustila na od Nemcev zasedeno Jugoslavijo 2. avgusta 1944 in s pomočjo srbskih četnikov gen. Draže Mihajloviča pripravila zasilno letalsko stezo, ki sojo uporabila ameriška transportna letala za reševanje 240 letalcev, katerih letala so bila sestreljena nad okupirano Jugoslavijo.
Islamabad, Pak. — Afganska letala so
bombardirala dve pakistanski vasi. V napadu je bilo ubitih 35 vaščanov, 200 pa ranjenih. Med žrtvami je bilo tudi nekaj afgan-skih beguncev.
London, V. Br. — Lov na vojne zločince iz 2. svetovne vojne je začela tudi v tej deželi. Angleška vlada je odkrila šest lakih oseb, ki sedaj živijo v Angliji. Ni še ugotovljeno, ako jih bo mogoče postaviti pred sodišče.
Washington, D.C. — Državni tajnik
George Shultz bo na obisku v Pekingu prihodnji teden. Med drugim, bo prosil Kitajce, naj prenehajo s prodajo orožja Iranu.

V torek, 24. februarja, je v Euclid General bolnišnici nenadno umrla 83 let stara Frances Jamnik, rojena Kochevar, vdova po Franku, mati Franka E. in Arnolda W. (pok.), 4-krat stara mati, 7-krat prastara mati, pred svojo upokojitvijo zaposlena kot kuharica pri Fanny’s Restaurant v Clevelandu, članica društva sv. Ane št. 4 ADZ in podr. št. 41 Slovenske ženske zveze. Pogreb je bil v četrtek, 26. februarja, iz Grdinovega pogrebnega zavoda na Lake Shore Blvd. v cerkev Marije Vnebov-zete dop. ob 9., od tam na pokopališče Vernih duš.

Med sinovi je č.g. Joseph Lekan S.M., med hčerkami pa č.s. Miriam Joseph O.P. Ga. Lekan je teta novega beograjskega nadškofa dr. Franca Perka. Je reforma komunizma mogoča?
Oči sveta so v naših dneh obrnjene v oba komunistična kolosa. Sovjetsko zvezo in Kitajsko. V obeh se namreč dogajajo čudne, izredne stvari, o katerih se ugiblje, kaj bi utegnile pomeniti. Pa se resnično samo ugiblje, kajti nihče v svobodnem svetu ne ve, kaj imata za bregom sovjetski »reformator« Mihail Gorbačov in kitajski »kapitalist« Deng Xiaoping. Vendar se po časopisnih ocenah in poročilih zdi, da človeštvo od enega in drugega kar precej pričakuje. Da bi le ne bilo razočarano in presenečeno, kot je bilo za časa Nikite Hruščova, ki je Stalina javno obsodil in njegovo truplo dal vreči iz Leninovega mavzoleja, potem pa dokaj hrupno delal na resničnih ali le navideznih reformah sovjetske oblasti, dokler ga ni klika Leonida Brežnjeva vrgla s prestola in je osamljen, zapuščen in zaničevan umrl.
Sedanji naslednik v vodstvu partije in diktature nad ogromnim imperijem mu je nekoliko podoben. Ali mu bo do konca? Kdo ve! Huda gospodarska in socialna kriza v Sovjetski zvezi z neznosno težo sili Gorbačova, da se je z vso mladostno vnemo lotil gotovih sprememb na tistih območjih javnega življenja, ki netijo največ ognja doma in v svobodnem svetu. Vidni simbol te spremembe je izpust slavnega fizika Andreja Saharova iz notranjega izgnanstva in njegov povratek v normalno življenje (po sovjetski verziji seveda) v Moskvi. Izpušča tudi druge disidente, dovoljuje več kritike režima, modificira nekatere zakonite določbe o aretaciji, mučenju oporečnikov, kar mu prinaša zahvalo in priznanje. A to ni nobena sprememba sistema, je samo popravek nekaterih vrst nasilja nad človeškimi pravicami. Če se bori zoper alkoholizem, zoper zabušavanje in lenobo pri delu ter podobne posledice komunistične prakse, to ni nobena reforma.
Toda narodi v Rusiji vedo, da o vsem odloča samoizvo-Ijena partija in ničesar ljudstvo, vedo, da se zrahljana vrv okrog vratu lahko spet zategne, ko bi vladajoči kliki popuščanje utegnilo postati nevarno, in da s preveliko vnemo iztegnjeni vrat proti svobodi vedno lahko povzroči skrajšanje telesa za eno glavo. Kako daleč bo Gorbačov uspel, in kako daleč sploh gredo njegovi reformistični načrti, bomo šele videli, ko bo z njimi zadel ob staro gardo visokih, užmi-kanih aparatčikov. Le ne prehitre pohvale, preveč navdušenja in prevelikih upov! Kajti resnična reforma komunističnega sistema, vredna tega imena, bi nesporno pomenila njegov konec. To dobro vedo komunisti prav tako kot vemo mi.
Lep zgled v potrdilo te naše premise nam očitno nudi razvoj partijskih in vladnih dogodkov v minulih dneh pri drugem komunističnem kolosu na Kitajskem. Svet se je divil modremu in pogumnemu ukrepu kitajskega diktatorja Denga, ki je ekonomijo dežele osvobodil marksističnega jopiča z močnim premikom, zlasti prehranjevalnega sektorja, v smer svobodnega tekmovanja na trgu ter zasebne iniciative. Stvar se je obnesla, toda... Svobodnejše uveljavljanje te iniciative na enem področju ljudske dejavnosti je pljusknilo na drugo — politično — področje in tam zanetilo
IZ NEWYORSKE PROSVETE...
Slovenski pregovor pravi: Kdor se veliko smeje, dolgo živi! Če je tako, poiem smo v nedeljo, 15. feb., newyorski Slovenci vsaj za eno leio podaljšali življenje, tako smo se smejali originalnim šalam Simona Kregarja, Nejčeta Zupana in Brooklynskega Jožeta ter izbranim slovenskim in angleškim šalam. Po uri (prosvetni, seveda) mi je rekel dr. Lango, da ga od smeha trebuh boli, in Ludvik Burgar, da se ni nikoli na nobeni uri v vseh letih toliko smejal kakor tokrat.
Zunaj je bil mraz, 6 stopinj v mestu, pod ničlo v predmestjih. Če dodamo še veter, smo bili povsod globoko pod ničlo. Šolski pouk je odpadel, ker je bila učiteljica Milena Puc bolna, pomožna učiteljica Alenka Pfeifer pa v Washingtonu, kamor je šla obiskal bolno mamo. Kljub temu sta se cerkev in po maši dvorana kar lepo napolnili. Kakor pismonoše tudi naših prosvetarjev ne zadržijo »ne dež, ne sneg...« Težko je najti bolj požrtvovalno slovensko skupino!
Spored je začel naš pianist Ives Lango. Na klavirju je dovršeno igral skladbo »Pink panther«. Nato je njegova mama zapela pesmi »Moj očka ima konjička dva« in »Polževa snubitev« v priredbi Danila Švare. Njeno petje nas vedno prevzame, ker ima dr. Dominika izšolan glas in poje z vsem ognjem svojega bistva.
Helka Puc Clement je nato povedala nekaj izbranih ameriških smešnic. Njene in vse druge sem prilagal temu dopisu in bodo objavjlene v naslednjih izdajah A.D.
Nadaljeval je Simon Kregar z zgodbami svojega priljubljenega junaka Mariina Krpana. Opisal nam je, kaj je Martinu pisal župnik od Sv. Trojice in kaj mu je Martin odgovoril. To je bilo za naše ljudi še bolj privlačno, in zabavno, ker se je likalo naše družbe. Prosvetarji so se veselili, smejali in ploskali, da je odmevalo po dvorani. Simon ima mnogo skritih talentov. Enega od teh — avtorstvo humorističnih zgodb —
so odkrile naše ure. Svojčas je veljal Milčinski za najboljšega slovenskega humorista. Smelo trdim, da ga je naš Simon v mnogih ozirih prekosil.
Zaključile so prvi del tri Vodlanove sestrice. Božica in Vesna sta pod maminim vodstvom zapeli pesem »Tri lisičke«, Breda pa je zaigrala na klavirju »Gor čez Izaro«.

V odmoru smo počastili jubilanta Toneta in Tončko Babnik, ki sta praznovala, obdana od svojih potomcev, 40-letnico uspešnega zakonskega življenja. Na svoje uspehe sla lahko ponosna! Vzgojila sta osem otrok, štiri fante in štiri dekleta. Imata lep dom v Astoriji in udobno hišo z velikim vrtom ob jezeru kakih 60 milj severno od mesta. Razen dveh so vsi otroci že poročeni z lastnimi domovi in dobrimi položaji. Tudi neporočena sta že v dobrih službah.
Vsa leta sta bila Babnikova zvesta farana in z družino najbolj trden steber naše prosvete. Že vsa leta pripravlja Babnikova družina dvorano, kuha in deli kosilo, po odhodu prosvetarjev pa še očisti dvorano. Babnik je bil med tistimi, ki so modernizirali cerkveno dvorano in ustvarili Baragovo okno. Podpisali smo zanju karto in ji priložili sliko tistega para iz Pcnnsylvanije, ki je obhajal pred kratkim 80-leinico poroke, in jima želeli, da bi tudi ona imela tako srečo.
Izrazili smo željo, da bi se čimprej vrnila med nas Vinko Burgar st. in Ivan Ravnikar, ki sla prestala težko operacijo, in da bi čimprej ozdraveli naši dragi gospe Milena Puc, voditeljica Slovenske šole, in Marinka Zupančič, naša priljubljena solistka.

Drugi del sporeda je dvorila pianistka Vanesa Šolar, ki je igrala Čajkovskijevo »Waltz«. Je vedno bolj sigurna, čeprav ima vsakikrat težji komad.
Andrej in Inge Zupančič sta nato recitirala zabavno pesem »Vesele maske«. Andrej je za
nameček povedal smešnico o menihu, ki je po 30 letih zapustil samostan, ker se je preveč pritoževal. V resnici je pa vsakih deset let smel povedati samo dve besedi. Zadnji dve sta bili »1 quit!«
Nato nam je Tone Jenko povedal nekaj slovenskih smešnic, Nejče Zupan pa smešnice, ki jih je sam doživel ali pa napisal po pripovedovanju drugih. Žel je splošno odobravanje.
Za konec sem moral jaz povedali smešnice, ki jih je sestavil in meni poslal nekaj dni pred uro BrooklynSki Jože. Bilo je prepozno, da bi jih komu poslal in še dvomil sem, da jih bo naprošcni hotel recitirati, ker se tičejo slovenskih Newyorčanov.
Tako ali tako poslušalci so jih razumeli in se prisrčno smejali. Tako je ura dosegla svoj cilj — farani so se zabavali in bili veseli.

Na proslavi 70-letnice naše fare je prijatelj vprašal Simona Kregarja: »Kje imaš pa ženo?« Simon je odgovoril kakor ponavadi: »Kdor ima ženo rad, ' jo pusti doma!« »A tako!« je odgovoril prijatelj. »Potem jo imam jaz še rajši kot ti, ker sem jo poslal za štiri mesece v Evropo na dopust.«
Tisti zamorski asistent, ki je lani skuhal odličen golaž Iz človeškega bedra, je zdaj povabil dr. Langa, da pride za njim v Afriko, kjer mu bo (dalje na str. 4)

FOWLER, Kansas - Karmeličanke v Sori na Gorenjskem se prav prisrčno zahvaljujejo vsem dobrotnikom, ki se jih še vedno spominjajo s svojimi darovi. Kako so Bogu hvaležne za poklice, saj je samostan poln. Na sv. Jožefa dan bo zopet ena naredila večne obljube. Marta ji je ime. Prosi nas vse, da bi zanjo malo pomolili, da bi vedno ostala zvesta svojemu poklicu in svojemu ženinu Kristusu.
Za vse dobrotnike se vsak mesec opravi sv. maša in seveda vsak dan smo v njihovih molitvah. Če imate kakšne posebne želje, samo sporočile mi, pa bom sestram pisal.

mogočne študentovske demonstracije, zahtevajoče politično svobodo v demokraciji, tudi v političnem življenju. Dengu so se zamajala tla pod nogami. Zaenkrat se je rešil situacijo s pametnim ravnanjem z demonstranti, a moral je žrtvovati Hu Jaobanga, šefa partije in svojega predvidenega naslednika pri vodstvu narodne in državne politike. Velika tihota vlada zadnje čase o razmerah na Kitajskem, kar vzbuja sum, da razmere tamkaj vrejo naprej in je vprašanje, kaj se bo skuhalo. V Moskvi vzgojeni mladi funkcionarji se oklepajo sovjetskega vzora. Modri Dengov ukrep je bila res prava reforma, a posledice? Zahteve po svobodi na vseh poljih javnega življenja, si komunistična oligarhija ne sme in ne more privoščiti, je pa voda na mlin moskovitov.
Zgled tovarišev Hruščova in Denga je dovolj zgovoren opomin tovarišu Gorbačovu, da še daleč nima prostih rok. Pa če bi trenutno pod gotovimi okoliščinami tudi dobil proste roke, je povsem neverjetno, da bi iz vrhovnega in svetovnega voditelja komunističnega sistema hotel postati njegov grobar.
Obrnimo sedaj svoj pogled še na našo ljubo domovino! Na vse načine se režim v Beogradu trudi, da bi državo izmotal iz globoke gospodarske, socialne in politične krize. Iz-gledi so slabi, razen ko bi osrednja vlada bila voljna in zmožna izvesti temeljito reformo s tem, da bi ekonomijo osvobodila partijskega političnega oklepa. Slovensko javnost v Clevelandu čaka lep kulturni večer
PEPPER PIKE, O. - Clevelandska državna univerza bo nudila slovenski in širši slovenski publiki izreden kulturni večer prihodnji torek, 3. marca. V »Main Classroom Building« (E. 22 St. in Chester Ave.) bo ob 7.30 zv. nastopil svetovno znani violinist-virtuoz Miha Pogačnik, katerega smo nekateri imeli priliko poslušati že lani. Na klavirju ga bo spremljala ga. Deidre Irons, sama priznana pianistka, Novoze-landčanka.
Miha Pogačnik se je rodil v Sloveniji, a je sedaj ameriški državljan. Leta 1980 je organiziral kulturni festival v sloviti katedrali v Chartresu, Francija. Festivala se je udeležilo več kot 2000 oseb iz 30 držav. Od takrat posveča Pogačnik veliko svojega časa in tudi gmotnih sredstev zamisli, da se različne kulture lahko zbližujejo preko skupnega uživanja umetnosti. Tako je Pogačnik 1. 1983 ustanovil v Ženevi, Švica organizacija IDRIART, katere namen je pospeševati organiziranje umetniških festivalov v različnih deželah, na katerih se srečujejo in spoznavajo ter medsebojno spoštujejo ljudi iz vseh koncev sveta. Sicer o tej zamisli je najbolj podrobno spregovoril Pogačnik sam v intervjuju v reviji Sodobnost; odlomki iz tega intervjuja sledijo mojemu spisu.
Pravkar je Pogačnik končal uspešno dvomesečno gostovanje v številnih evropskih deželah, že v marcu pa bo koncertiral v številnih ameriških mestih, od New Yorka do Kalifornije, od Teksasa do države Washingtona in kanadskega pacifiškega mesta Vancouvra. Kot direktor IDRIART-a bo pa vodil festivale letos v Dublinu (Irska), Sao Paulu (Brazilija), Cuzco-Machu Pic-chu (Peru), Bled (Slovenija), Quindao (Kitajska), Praga (Češkoslovaška), in Trondheim (Norveška).
Miha Pogačnik ob koncertnem nastopu
Dohodki iz številnih koncertov, namenja Pogačnik v največjem obsegu organiziranju teh festivalov. Gre torej v tem primeru za izrednega umetnika, ki svoje velike talente daruje idealu miru na svetu preko zbliževanja navadnih, a srčno kulturnih ljudi. Kot Amerikanci slovenskega rodu smo lahko ponosne na Pogačnikove velike dosežke in na njegovo predanost zamisli, ki je v dobrobit vseh narodov in kultur.
Koncert v torek, 3. marca, je brez vsake vstopnine, čeprav bodo s hvaležnostjo sprejeti prostovoljni darovi za IDRIART organizacijo. Stroški za koncert torej krijejo Gund Foundation, Glasbena fakulteta pri C.S.U., C.S.U program za mednarodne študije, in C.S.U. oddelek za etnične študije.
Pridite na ta koncert. Gotovo bodo navzoči vsi, ki smo uživali ob prvem Pogačnikovem nastopu lani.

Miha Pogačnik o svojem poslanstvu
(V eni zadnjih Številk revije Sodobnosti je bil Miha Pogačnik da! intervju Manci Košir. Intervju je sicer dolg in ga ne bom objavit v celoti. Odlomki, ki sledijo, bodo pa gotovo dati bralcem jasnejši vpogled v njegovo mišljenje. Sodeč po Pogačnikovem prvem nastopu v našem mestu, bo navzočim na koncertu tudi govoril o svoji zamisli. Urednik
Koširjeva: Vaše svojstveno umevanje umetnosti vključuje najbrž tudi premislek o njeni funkciji v današnjem svetu. Kaj je naloga sodobnega u-metnika, Miha Pogačnik?
Pogačnik: Prisluhnimo ekologiji! Z njeno pomočjo so se začele osveščati množice ljudi po celem svetu. Začeli smo čistiti naravo: zrak, vodo... Ker je umetnost tudi narava, le da na višji stopnji, moramo tudi z njo ravnati v skladu z ekološko zavestjo. V umetnosti, ki je vedno bolj komplicirana, da je že pozabila na svoje osnovne elemente (barve, tone, in
tervale), je treba te elemente ponovno razstaviti, jih premisliti, očistiti. Storiti ta korak nazaj — kaj je igra sama na sebi.
V Goethejevem znamenitem delu Pravljica o čudežni liliji in zeleni kači je prizor, ko pride kača v podzemski tempelj. V njem so štirje kipi: zlat, srebrn, bronast in mešan kralj. Ta kralj iz vseh metalov je podoba današnjega človeka. Drugi trije pa so podobe čistih elementov: mišljenja, čutenja, volje. Mi se rodimo z mešanimi elementi. Umetnikova naloga jc, da elemente razstavi,
jih loči, da so čisti, in potem, ko jih obvlada, iz njih zgradi sebe in svojo umetnost na novo.
A to ni dovolj za današnjega človeka. Odpreti se moramo svetu in prisluhniti, kaj se dogaja v njem. Ekološka zavest, o kateri sem govoril, je naredila, da se ljudje počasi zavedajo enotnosti, celosti življenja in bivanja. Katastrofa v Černobilu, denimo, je osvestila ljudi — da smo odvisni drug od drugega, ne glede na to, kje živimo. Naučila nas je, da je absurdno premišljevati o človeštvu v okviru državnih in drugih meja. Kaj pomeni za ljudi dejstvo, da vsebujejo trident podmornice osemkrat več eksploziva, kot ga je bilo aktiviranega v celi drugi svetovni vojni? Ena takih atomskih podmornic (ruska, op. ur. AD) se je potopila. Danes o tem ne piše noben časopis več. In ne vemo, kaj se dogaja pod morjem; mogoče že seva...
Prebujena zavest, da je življenje enotno, je veliko. Morda pa bi se dalo to novo zavest dvigniti še stopnjo više? Pogledati v človekovo notranjost. In tu ima glasba izreden pomen. Glasba je neposredno okno, so vrata v človeško notranjost. In je energija, ki presega nacionalne meje.
Narode imajo tak pomen, kot ga imajo na primer organi v telesu. Tudi organi so omejeni, pa so kljub temu povezani med seboj in kri se pretaka med njimi in po celem telesu... Povezati organe, združevati ljudi, ustvarjati te edine pomembne vezi — človeške bližine. To je potrebno! In glasba ima takšno moč, da bi... In smo pri IDRIARTU.

GOSPE IVANKI VELIKONJA
BOWLING GREEN. O. -»Vrlo ženo, kdo jo najde? Visoko presega bisere njena cena. Moč in milina sta njen okras. Svoja usta odpira modro, in na njenem jeziku so ljubk besede.« Ti verzi Knjige pregovorov mi prihajajo pred oči, kadarkoli se osebno ali v mislih srečam z gospo Ivanko Velikonja.
Pred dvema mesecema, ob priliki njene devetdesetletnice, je njen sin Jože napisal za Ameriško Domovino lep članek v njeno čast. Takoj, ko smo se v začetku januarja vrnili iz Clevelanda, kjer smo praznovali njen visoki jubilej, sem tudi jaz mislila napisati nekaj misli o njej, pa sem to delo tako dolgo odložila — ne toliko zaradi časa, ampak predvsem zato, ker smo gospo Velikonja v naši družini vedno tako visoko cenili in jo tako radi imeli, da je v besedah, pa če bi bile še tako izbrane, težko izraziti to, kar do nje čutiš.
Z gospo Velikonja sva se prvič srečali pred petindvajsetimi leti, ko je prišla živet k svoji hčerki Zini v Clevelandu. Z Zino sva si bili dolga leta v dobrem prijateljstvu. Petinšestdeset let je bila ga. Ivanka stara takrat. Za seboj je imela polno življenje. Naj navedem nekaj drobcev, ki sem jih pobrala iz nagovora, ki ga je sama napisala in podali v angleščini v cerkvi sv. Frančiška ob priliki duhovne obnove leta 1981:
Oče ji je umrl, ko je bila stara devet let. Ivanka je bila najstarejša od šestih otrok. Ob izgubi družinskega očeta je v njenem srcu toliko bolj zaživela podoba nebeškega Očeta. Kakor pravi sama, Njegovo dobrohotno varstvo je vedno čutila ob svoji strani. V vsaki potrebi in v vsaki stiski, ki ji je življenje prineslo, je čutila Njegovo pričujočnost.
Kmalu po prvi svetovni vojni se je poročila s pisateljem Nartejem Velikonja. Po dvanajstih letih ji je mož težko zbolel. Dva tedna je bil v nezavesti. Takrat sta imela Ivanka in Narte Velikonja devet o-trok, katerih najmlajši je bil star tri mesece. Z gorečo molitvijo, zaupanjem, z ljubeznijo in močno voljo obeh, se je zopet spravil na noge, tako, daje po dveh letih lahko začel z delno službo. Takoj po vojni, da po njuni srebrni poroki, so ga zaprli in obsodili. Ne njej, ne duhovniku ni bilo dovoljeno, da bi ga obiskala. Niti za zadnje slovo. Potem so zaprli tudi njo.
Ga. Ivanka Velikonja ni imela lahke poti. Njeno življenje je bilo trše kakor kogarkoli izmed nas. Vendar, če govorite z njo o njeni preteklosti, vidite, da ima polno lepih in bogatih spominov. V njenem srcu n. prosto:a za obžalovanje in
zagrenjenost, še manj pa za sovraštvo in obračunavanje. Iz nje izžareva sveža mladostna vedrost. S kakšnim veseljem je vedno skrbela in še goji rože v lončkih in rože na vrtu. Svet, dasi poln nevšečnosti in bridkosti, je po njenem, tudi poln lepote, ki si ji ne more načudili in je tudi ne nagledati.
V novem svetu, pri letih, ko smo navadni ljudje pripravljeni za v pokoj, se je ga. Velikonja s poživljeno energijo oklenila življenja. Vodila je kuharske tečaje. Za cerkev sv. Frančiška je šivala in Stikala oltarne prte, jih prala in likala. Po vseh starih predpisih. Seveda je imela izkušnjo s tem delom. To je že delala v domači cerkvi v Ljubljani.
Koliko ročnega dela je šlo v tem času skozi njene roke! Najino poroko in prva obhajila najinih otrok je počastila z umetniško izdelanimi tortami. Pred nekaj leti smo dobili od nje božično kartico z vezenim voščilom. S posebno pobožnostjo jo pred vsakim božičem postavimo na omaro. Na vrata pa obesimo vezenino iz jute, ki jo je tudi ona tako spretno izdelala. Gotovo je to, da ima ga. Velikonja toliko ustvarjalne sile, da vse, za kar se zavzame in naredi, pride iz njenih rok prava umetnina.
Predvsem pa se je ob prihodu v Ameriko z vso vnemo začela učiti novega jezika. Kmalu je brala clevelandski list The Plain Dealer, od vremenskih poročil in vsakdanjih novic, do člankov o politiki, ekonomiji, literaturi in vseh ostalih odtenkih življenja. Seveda se ni ustavila pri Plain Dealerju. Literatura, tudi angleška, je bila njena posebna ljubezen. Pred nekaj leti je celo napisala in v cerkvi sv. Frančiška podala vrsto predavanj o svojem odnosu do spiritualnega življenja, do svetega pisma in do Evharistija. Iz njenih besed veje ne samo njeno obvladanje pisane angleščine, ampak predvsem njena neizmerna ljubezen do Boga, živa vera v Kristusa, v sv. Evharistiji, otroška vdanost, zaupanje v božje varstvo, in globoka, mirna sreča ob zavesti, da živi dan za dnem, trenutek za trenutkom v božji pričujočnosti.
Stara zgodba pripoveduje o prebivalcih odljudene naselbine, ki so izklesali iz kamna v gori veličasten portret. »To je obraz našega boga,« so pravili sebi in svojim otrokom. »Ob svojem času bo prišel med nas in bo živel z nami.« Rod za rodom je čakal, da se bo obljuba prednikov izpolnila. Končno se je pojavil otrok, ki je tako vzljubil kameniti portret, da je preživel vso mladost na gori strmeč v mirni, skrivnostni obraz. S takim občudovanjem in hrepenenjem ga je gledal, da je sčasoma njegov . Tdo'>: na str. 5)
Misijonska srečanja in pomenki
715. Lazarist Ivan Štanta
se 7. januarja oglaša z Madagaskarja, kjer deluje že leta v škofiji italijanskih sobratov iz province v Turinu. Prilaga podpisano potrdilo za tisočak v ZD valuti, ki ga je prejel od MZA: 500 dol. kot nevezan dar in $500 za sv. maše po namenu darovalcev iz vrst MZA sodelujočih:
»Dragi sobrat!
Prav lepo se Ti zahvaljujem za pomoč, ki ste mi jo poslali od MZA. Bog naj Vam obilno povrne! Sv. maše bom opravil v prvi polovici tega leta.
Božične praznike in Novo leto sem praznoval še kar lepo. Maševal sem na podeželju in v ječi. Zdravje in zadovoljstvo me spremljata. Vaša pomoč mi prihaja v pravem času. Že dve leti smo imeli veliko sušo in sedaj čutimo posledice.
Kakor morda že veste, imamo v Zazafotsy, 35 km severno od Ihosy, veliko naselje za prizadete. Tu sem začel tudi s kosilom za otroke najbolj revnih. V Ihosy in Analambazi, osem km vzhodno od Ihosy, obiskujem dva zapora s približno 600 zaporniki. Poučujem jih v veri in jim pomagam z rižem in z zdravili.
Prvo moje delo
ni karitativna akcija, ampak oznanjevanje Evangelija na podeželju Bara. Imam 19 krščanskih občestev na področju 6000 kv km. Prebivalcev je malo, morda niti eden na kv km. Katoličanov je okoli 1900 in protestantov okoli 1400. Dela je dosti. Posebno zato, ker se nekoliko bavim z medicino. Od jutra do večera mi ne dajo miru.
Kakor vam je morda znano, jaz ne delujem na slovenskem misijonu, ampak skupno z italijanskimi misijonarji v Juški škofiji. Kot lazaristi Slovenci, Italijani, Francozi in Poljaki, vsi spadamo pod malgaško provinco lazaristov, a delujemo v treh različnih škofijah. Slovenci delujejo v Farafan-ganski škofiji, Italijani v Juški in Poljaki v Fort-Dauphinski škofiji. Španski lazaristi ne spadajo v malgaško provinco
lazaristov.
Skoraj vedno sem na podeželju. Vsako nedeljo popoldne in vsak ponedeljek zjutraj sem v Ihosy, da se odpočijem in odpišem na pisma. Drugače sem v Zazafotsy, ki je center mojega misijonskega delokroga, ali pa na misijonskih poteh, kjer sem potreben. Četudi se kmalu utrudim, lahko rečem, da me zdravje, hvala Bogu, še kar spremlja. Letos bo 25-letnica mojega delovanja na Madagaskarju. Imam pravico do malo daljših počitnic in bom od junija do oktobra na dopustu v Sloveniji. Tako, dragi sobrat, sem Ti dal nekaj novic o sebi in o mojem delovanju na Rdečem otoku. Prisrčen pozdrav Tebi in vsem MZA dobrotnikom.

Usmiljenka Anka Burger
se je oglasila 26. januarja. Ne iz Burundija, kamor ji je MZA pomoč $500 poslala. Takole piše: »Iskrena hvala za božična voščila in za poslani dar. Zelo sem bila vesela Vaše pozornosti. Zahvalim se Vam tudi v imenu ubogih, ki bodo deležni Vašega daru. Čeprav malo pozno, tudi jaz želim srečno novo leto vsem dobrotnikom. Obilo blagoslova vsem pri Vašem sodelovanju.
Mislim, da sem se Vam o-glasila pred dvema letoma iz Burundija. Zdaj sem že eno leto in pol v Rwandi, kot toliko drugih, ki so morali, kot jaz sama, oditi od tam. Hvala Bogu, da tudi tukaj ne manjka ubogih.
Naš misijon tu je zelo oddaljen in cesta do nas je zelo slaba, ker smo v hribih. Prav zaradi tega je revščina velika, ker zemlja ni rodovitna in ljudje so odvisni samo od tega, kar na tej zemlji pridelajo.
V skupnosti smo 4 sestre: dve sta domačinki, ena je Španka, in jaz. Samo dve sva medicinski sestri, zato nama ne manjka dela z bolniki. Imamo dispanzer, bolnico in poro-dišnico, pa še center za otroke, kjer se matere učijo pravilne prehrane za dojenčke. Veliko
bolnikov pride vsak dan po pomoč. Skušamo jim pomagati, kolikor moremo in je v naših močeh. Skratka, skušamo jih poučevati, kako z istimi sredstvi, ki so jim na razpolago, bolje živeti. Saj je veliko bede prav zaradi nevednosti.
Tudi delo na župniji rojeva lepe sadove. Župnija namreč obstaja šele 15 let, a je vseeno v njej že veliko kristjanov. Lani je bilo krščenih za Veliko noč 120 odraslih in v avgustu ponovno 250. Bogu hvala za vse to. Dela res ne manjka na vseh področjih. Veseli smo, da tem ubogim ljudem lahko pomagamo.
Še enkrat Bog plačaj za dar MZA. Obljubim vsem spomin v molitvi in Vas vse lepo pozdravljam.

se zahvaljuje za MZA dar $500 po misijonarju Jožefu Šomenu iz Iboko, Zaire, 22. januarja. G Šomen je bil na-prošen, da se v njegovem imenu zahvali in takole modruje:
»Tukaj na misijonu v Iboko je tudi brat Marcel Kerševan, ki je dobil prav tako po Vas od MZA ček za $500 in me je prosil, naj se Vam v njegovem imenu prisrčno zahvalim! Potrdili naju obeh Vam podpisani vračam.
V pismu, ki ste ga poslali bratu Marcelu, ga vzpodbujate, da se Vam kaj več oglasi in opiše svoje delo. On sam pa pravi, da roka postaja nekoliko okorna za pisanje in sam vidim, da je to tudi res. Človek lahko tudi razume tako stanje, saj je brat Marcel v zvestem misijonskem delu že 53 let in to v tej vlažni tropski vročini. Osebno ga poznam od leta 1978, ko je bil na dopustu v domovini in je obiskal bogoslovje, kjer sem jaz bil gojenec in študent. Takrat je naredil name vtis skromnega in požrtvovalnega delavca.
Od leta 1985 pa sem skupaj z njim tukaj v Iboko in sem se prepričal o resničnosti prvih vtisov. On sam ne govori veliko o svojem delu v Zairu, drugi pa mi pripovedujejo, da je v času, ko je bil poln moči, veliko gradil na raznih postojankah v naši škofiji. Naj omenim le veliko župnijsko cerkev v Lukoleli, kjer že osem let deluje naš rojak, g. Tone Pačnik.
Drugo, prav tako dobro uspelo delo so misijonska poslopja na postaji Irebu. Seveda je še več omembe vrednih reči, in upam, da bodo zabeležene na primernem mestu.
Sedaj se brat Marcel posveča v glavnem brušenju orodij in popravljanju raznih reči, ki jih ljudje prinesejo od blizu in daleč. Ko je bil lani na dopustu, so me tukaj ljudje nestrpno spraševali, kdaj se bo br. Marcel vrnil in to spraševanje je bilo polno zavesti, da jim je delo tega misijonskega delavca velika pomoč. »Različni so darovi,« pravi apostol Pavel, in v skladu z njimi tudi različne obveznosti.
Brat Marcel je priložil fotografijo; jaz pa bom storil to drugič.«
Brat Marcel je bil rojen na praznik Sv. Treh Kraljev, 6. januarja 1907. Njegov brat Karel, ki je leta deloval z njim v Belgijskem Kongu, sedanjem Zairu, je bil rojen 12. dec. 1902 in je že več let na Mirni pri Gorici v pokoju. Oba sta vstopila istočasno k lazaristom 9. novembra 1929 in napravila zaobljube za brata 9. decembra 1931. Bratu Marcelu želimo ob 80-letnici življenja vse dobro. Naj ga Bog ohranja močnega do konca v delokrogu, ki si ga je sam zbral in mu zvesto vse življenje služil. Pismo g. Šomena bo objavljeno, kolikor njega zadeva, drugič.
V Torontu je bil operiran lazarist g. Franc Sodja, ki mu želi tudi MZA skorajšnje okrevanje za delo, ki ga z veliko ljubeznijo do neumrjočih duš vrši že toliko let s tako zvestobo.

Koroški študentje
FOWLER, Kansas - Zvezna gimnazija za Slovence v Celovcu je objavila poseben odlok, da se morajo študentje, ki bodo v prihodnjem šolskem letu (1987-1988) obiskovali Slovensko gimnazijo, vpisati že letos, februarja meseca namreč, in narediti sprejemni izpit.
Ta odlok je vsem prijateljem in dobrotnikom koroških študentov v opomin, da jim moramo takoj priskočiti na pomoč, da bodo imeli možnost obiskovati Slovensko gimnazijo.
Mislim, da mi ni več potrebno na dolgo in široko razlagati ozadje in potrebe teh revnih študentov, ki bi radi ostali zavedni Slovenci, zvesti svojemu narodu, in se vzgajali v slovenskem duhu, na Slovenski gimnaziji, in tako postali nekoč voditelji našega naroda na Koroškem, zibelke slovenstva.
V Celovcu imajo Modestov Dom in Slomškov Dom za fante in dekleta, toda treba je tam plačati oskrbovalnino (room and board), in njihovi starši ne zmorejo vseh stroškov pokriti. Preteklo šolsko leto smo pomagali 23 študentom. Nekatere sem preteklo leto obiskal in težko je povedati, kako so nam hvaležni. Zato upam, da jih tudi letos ne bomo pustili na cedilu. Če darujemo $500, plačamo približno polovico njihove oskrbo-valnine v domovih. Ostalo morajo plačati starši. Vendar vsak dar je sprejet z največjo hvaležnostjo. Kdor plača celotno šolnino, ima »svojega študenta«, ki se Vam bo osebno zahvalil.
Nikar ne dopustimo, da bi naša kri pod Karavankami izumrla. Res smo lahko ponosni, da je bil v jeseni izvoljen v avstrijski parlament poslanec Karel Smolle, študent Slovenske gimnazije in tudi moj učenec v Škocjanski ljudski šoli.

zelo dobrohotnih) zunanjih upnikov tudi poskuša, a si ne upa daleč dovolj s popuščanjem, da bi ji ne ušle vajeti iz rok. Oblast je pri vseh komunistih, tudi slovenskih, visoko nad odgovornostjo za blaginjo vladanih.
V republiki Sloveniji, ki gospodarsko še nekako najbolje vozi, opažamo že nekaj časa nemir in vretje med mladino, ki pod vodstvom mladih komunistov kar drzno zahteva reforme v politične, socialnem in kulturnem življenju naroda. Režim zelo grdo gleda skozi prste in dovoljuje, da se mladci razpisujejo o svobodi in neki demokraciji, a skrbno pazi, da opozicijsko gibanje ne udari čez mejo, ki je tabu. Tedaj nastopi oblast, in dejavnosti opozicije je konec. Kdor bi na takšne proteste stavil kakršno koli upanje na korenito reformo, bi bil v veliki zmoti. Z evolucijo torej ni nič. Preostane revolucija, ki bi v komunistično vladani več-narodni državi pomenila skoraj samomor.
Vsaka temeljitejša reforma komunizma nosi v sebi kal propada. To vedo komunisti bolje kot mi. Dokler ne pride v Meki komunizma, v Moskvi, do velike, usodne napake, ali pa režim doživi katastrofalen udarec, ki bo zrušil marksistično oblast v matuški, ni pričakovati ne bistvene reforme, ne propada diktatorskih režimov drugod po svetu.

Ko je Tone Osovnik zopet štel, koliko ljudi je v cerkvi, je stopil k njemu prof. Remec in mu rekel: »Tone, da se ne boš zmotil. Jaz in Minič štejeva oba vsak za dva!«
Svetovno znani pianist Vladimir Horowitz je imel koncert v Avery Fisher Hall, ki se ga je udeležil tudi slovenski pianist Ives Lango. Po koncertu se je Ive predstavil in čestital Horowitzu. Ta ga je vprašal: »Sem že slišal o Tebi. Kje pa igraš?« »V Carnegie Hall in v slavni dvorani Sv. Cirila!« je odgovoril Ives. »A tam,« je rekel Horowitz, »sem slišal, da je dvorana zelo akustična in publika razvajena. Hoče samo najboljše!« »Tako je,« je rekel Ives, »in jaz se trudim, da jim dam samo najboljše.«
Vinko Burgar je vprašal Zdravkota Feiferja: »Kako to, da si prišel na svet februarja, ko je tak mraz! Ali nisi mogel počakati, da bi bilo toplo?« »Ne, nisem mogel,« je odgovoril Zdravko, »sem bil tako lačen, da sem kar naprej trkal na vrata, dokler me niso pustili ven v svet. razvijanje medkulturalnih odnosov z umetnostjo.)
Pogačnik: Potem moram spregovoriti o svoji tako imenovani karieri. No... Vedno sem bil »no sayer«. Rekli so mi, če hočeš biti violinist, moraš storiti to in to, jaz pa sem odgovoril — ne, ne bom. Ko sem končal študij (naprej pri Igorju Ozimu v Koinu, potem sem dobil Fulbrightovo štipen-djio za izpopolnjevanje na znameniti glasbeni šoli v Bloo-mingtonu v Indiani), nisem iskal službe, ker sem vedel, da bi bilo potem z menoj konec. In sem začel-čisto od spodaj kot vsi emigranti. Čez dan sem čistil hotel, zvečer sem vadil.
Še ko sem bil v Nemčiji, sem bil na šoli, ki je temeljila na waldorfski pedagogiki. Nisem vedel, za kaj gre, a intuitivno sem čutil, da gre tu za celostne zadeve, da obravnavajo vsakega otroka kot posameznika in da je celosten šolski proces prepojen z umetnostjo. Igral sem za otroke in vzgojitelje na tej šoli.
Zvedel sem, da obstajajo podobne ustanove za duševno prizadete otroke, in se odločil, da bom poskusil še tam. Oj, to je prava šola za umetnika! Tu fasada nič ne šteje — ne pomaga, če vržeš lase s čela in globoko vzdihneš... Teh otrok se dotakne, kar je pristno. Včasih sem pokleknil na kolena in jim igral na uho...
V teh ustanovah sem si izostril občutek za resnično. Vedel sem: to sem, to pa nisem. Kadar grem na koncert, dobro vem, kdo gradi fasado, kdo pa igra zares. Gledam za, slišim od zadaj.
Danes je vse zgrajeno na fasadi — če umetnik nima imidža, že misli, da ne sodi v to stoletje. A v glasbi je vse, kar resnično velja, poštenost, preprostost, iskrenost. Te sem se naučil pri otrocih. Od takrat naprej si vedno rečem, kadar

stopim na oder: ne pritiskaj, ne hiti in ne domišljaj si, da si najboljši.
V	določenem času sem igral za tisoče otrok. Ti so zdaj stari dvajset, trideset let in še se me spominjajo. Oni so občinstvo IDR1ARTA. Govorim jim — pojdite z menoj na Madžarsko, na Češko. Družite se s sovrstniki iz vsega sveta. Nobena sila ni močnejša od te — poznati se med seboj kot ljudje, družiti se kot posamezniki. Ni filozofije, ni mirovne konference, ki bi lahko storila za človeštvo več kot na neposredna prijateljska vez med ljudmi.

Po mnogih peripetijah je bil organiziran Bachov ciklus v katedrali Chartres. Živo se spominjam, kako sem stopil v katedralo, napihnjen, močan, včeraj sem igral v Hamburgu, jutri bom v Rimu... Vzel sem violino, potegnil z lokom... Katedrala me je zreducirala na nič. Počutil sem se kot smet. Ukazala mi je: »Ven! Vstopi še enkrat, kot se stopi v katedralo!« Vrnil sem se, uničen. Prej sem bil napihnjen balon, zdaj pa me je katedrala prebodla z iglo in sesedel sem se.
V	tej katedrali ne igraš na violino, marveč na katedralo! V njej moraš igrati tako, da se prilagodiš njenim dimenzijam. Katedrala je zgrajena po glasbenih principih. Arhitektura je okamenela glasba in obratno. Če si sposoben katedralo slišati, slišati, kako zvenijo njeni proporci, lahko igraš v njej. Ko vzameš violinski lok, je ta dolg dvajset, trideset metrov in z njim ne vlečeš po strunah, marveč po listih njenih stebrih! Kar ti uspe, je povečano v neskončnost in lepoto; kar ti ne uspe, je uničeno do neskončnosti.

Tega leta, 1983, sem pogledal po katedrali in videl Angleže, Amerikance, Nemce, Holandce, Avstralce... Kje so pa Slovani? Kje so Kitajci? Kje Madžari? sem se vprašal. Seveda, ti ne morejo priti v Chartres. Pa pojdimo mi k njim! Takrat seje rodil IDRI-ART. Prijatelji iz Ženeve so svetovali, da tam ustanovimo institucijo. Aha, sem pomislil: Ženeva — Rdeči križ, mirovna pogajanja, nevtralnost... Da, Ženeva po pravi kraj. Kako se bomo pa imenovali? Premišljevali smo, kombinirali in na koncu smo našli IDR1ART. Kratica me spominja na Slovenijo, na Idrijo, živo srebro — merkurij, ki je ravnotežje... Ko sem se 1983 poslavjlal od občinstva v Chartresu, sem jim zaklical: »Drugo leto se vidimo v Sloveniji!«
Temeljni princip 1DR1ART je, da se seli občinstvo in ne le umetniki. Da se tudi publika napreza, se odpira svetu in
drugim in drugačnim ljudem. Ko smo po izkušnjah v Chartresu prestopili mejo na Ljubelju, so bili ljudje presenečeni. Začutili so, da je tu nov svet, ki diha svojo posebnost, začutili so slovensko dušo, s katero je Bled prepojen tisočletja.
Če greš v Cleveland, kjer živi osem tisoč Slovencev (! -ur. AD), ne moreš doživeti tega občutka slovenskega prostora. Si v Clevelandu, Ohio. To je tisto, kar sem rekel na začetku — v Sloveniji sneg diši drugače. Ko je občinstvo doživelo Bled, sta se srečali dve kulturi, mnogotero pogledov. V glasbi je najmanj dvanajst možnosti ogleda — kakor če greš okoli drevesa, z vsake točke ga vidiš drugače. Ne moremo govoriti o levi in desni, o gor in dol. Zato, če se na festivalu 1DRIART v Budimpešti srečala Vzhodni Nemec in Američan, ne bo prvi tarnal, ker nima mercedesa, in drugi se ne bo hvalisal, da je poln dolarjev. Te zadeve v trenutku niso več pomembne. Pomembno je človeško srečanje, ta možnost, da se drug drugemu odpreta kot človeka.
Urednik A.D. — V kolikor moreni doumeti, je zadnji Pogačnikov stavek bistvo lega, kar skuša doseči s svojimi aktivnostmi. Priznavam, da sem skeptičen do uresničljivosti njegove zamisli, tudi v omejenem obsegu. Veliko manj optimistično gledam na ljudi, na človeštvo, kot gledajo Pogačnik in njegovi sodelavci. Kljub temu se mi zdi, da je njegov pogled obrnjen v pravo smer. Tisti, ki bi radi kaj več o tem zvedeti, lahko pridejo na koncert. Mogoče bo prilika za oseben pomenek s Pogačnikom ali čas za vprašanja — o tem nisem ob tem pisanju nič obveščen. Vsekakor pa lahko zagotovim, da boste ljubitelji violina uživali ob njegovem igranju na koncertu.
Euclidski upokojenci poročajo
EUCLID, O. - Zelo živahna je bila februarska seja Kluba eu-clidskih upokojencev. Obiskalo jo je kar 352 članov in članic.
Kol gost se nam je predstavil s svojim zanimivim govorom znani in priljubljeni podiatrist dr. Palermo s Clevelandskega kolegija za pediatrijo. S svojim odličnim govorom nas je seznanil o danes zelo razširjeni bolezni nog in ožilja ter problemov cirkulacije, ki prizadene posebno starejše ljudi.
Njegovo razlago so spremljale zgovorne skioptične slike (slides), s katerimi je prikazal bolezen pred in po operacijskem posegu. On zastopa stališče, da naj bolnik, predno se odloči za operacijo, upošteva mnenje treh različnih zdravnikov.
Sledila je živahna razprava ter mnoga vprašanja, na katera je dr. Palermo rad odgovarjal. Tej bolezni je res treba posvetiti vso pozornost. Takih in podobnih govorov si naši člani še želijo.
Blagajnik Ray Bradač je poročal, da si je »bela žena« vzela v januarju počitnice. Zato pa so naši zastopniki v pogrebnih zavodih v februarju imeli spel več dela. Zastopniki so John Gorjance in žena ter Eli Gozdanovic in žena.
Članica Marie Selan je za sončni količek poročala o naših bolnikih v januarju. Ti so: Christine Kovach, Dorothy Repar, Frank Truden, Mary Cesnik, Frank Sabec, Mary Kobal, Molly Plul, Marie Powell in Frank Vovko.
Povedala je tudi, da se Mary Kobal ter Molly in Frank Plut nahajajo sedaj v Slovenskem domu za ostarele na Neff Rd. Ne pozabile obiskali ta naš Dom, stanovalci v njem bodo veseli vašega obiska in nekaj toplih besed v spodbudo.
Aktivnosti po seji so bile polne vedrine in radosti. Naše marljive žene v kuhinji so pripravile nad 200 okusnih sendvičev. Kar hitro smo jih pospravili.
Z lepimi slovenskimi melodijami sta nas razveseljevala naša imenitna godbenika Lou Trebar in Tony Vadnal. Takoj se je zbral okoli njiju velik krog ljubiteljev domačih viž.
Nato je razgibani Lou Trebar zaigral še več nam tako priljubljenih starih ameriških pesmic, ki obujajo spomine na nekdanje dni. Pridružila se mu je skupina dobrih pevcev in pevk, kar je izzvenelo še posebno lepo.
Vedno nasmejani Lou res zasluži naše veliko priznanje, ko nas od časa do časa rade-volje razveseli in obenem skrbi za našo dieto. Hvala ti, Lou, za tvojo pozornost!

Kdor pogleda gospe Ivanki Velikonja v oči, lahko ugotovi, da se je že v tem življenju srečala z Bogom; ne samo srečala, ampak z Njim živi, iz leta v leto, iz dneva v dan. Slovenia After the Year 2,000

Much has been written about the future of the Slovenian Nation and the possibilities of some kind of a peaceful resolution where Slovenians finally would have the right to determine their own future, and decide for themselves what they want to do — when they want to do it, without oppressive interference from Belgrade.
In the past dozen years many articles have been published in Europe-North as well as South America, with different views presented as to the directions and different options Slovenians might have as a nation in the future.
Unfortunately we learn from history all the way from about the eighth century — we as a nation really did not learn much from history. Whereas in the 20th century opportunity knocked twice on the Slovenian door and both times Slovenians missed the train. Lack of confidence and total absence of knowledge about international games played with small nations derailed hopes of some visionaries for Slovenian independence. Confidence in themselves as a nation is a serious problem. It existed throughout the centuries and unfortunately, “second class citizen syndrome” still exists today in Slovenia as well as across the borders in Austria and Italy.
Subordination was seen as a way of life for Slovenian people for almost a thousand years. As we know from history Slovenians never cared much for royalty. Democracy was instinctively their natural choice. This year marks the 200th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution and it can be seen in Slovenian history that, “We the people,” theory was adopted from the way the Slovenians at Carinthia chose the Dukes to rule according to the people’s wishes.
The course of history was not kind to our forefathers, yet they endured Medieval oppres-
sion of artistocratic masters (mostly foreign nationals) and barbaric massacres of the Muslim Turks who in the name of their god Alah, were for over 500 years killing, burning, looting, raping, and abducting boys and girls into slavery.
In the 20th century Slovenian nation suffered primarily because of narrowmindedness and lack of political sophistication of its leaders. Secondly because of Slovenians’ by and large interest in earning their daily bread instead of their total independence. Nothing wrong with that except you pay for the bread with the price of liberty.
Strange winds blow from southeasterly direction in Yugoslavia and those winds have for centuries blown in tragedy and suffering to Slovenian people. Nothing promising ever came in from south-southeast, so what is a recourse for the future? Historically Slovenes had little or nothing in common with their neighbors to the south, so why did they get roped in with the group of nations whose culture and way of life is world apart from Slovenians?
The evolution of European “Super-state” is inevitable. The invisible jetsteam is bringing in changes to the European continent with very little notice by the media and much less by the public at large. Unfortunately on this continent we are totally oblivious to this phenomenon which is to materialize within the foreseeable future. How this European Super-state will be fully implemented at this time is anybody’s guess. One thing is certain, there is a distinct sense of European nationality.
The Europanization process will not be cheered equally by all members of the European Economic Community (EEC), some members will resist losing their “national identity”. Not too enthusiastic about such possibilities are Great
Britain and Greece, two countries of north and south Europe as different as Yugoslavians north and south.
So, what could a united Europe offer to Slovenians? Since Slovenian intellectuals bungled two opportunites to achieve independence, one certainly hopes that the new generation will remove the blindfolds and recognize the opportunity looming on the horizon. Undoubtedly, the task is of enormous proportions — to create a union of different nationalities, ethnic and language groups. Slovenians as full members of United Europe stand much better chance (social, ethnic,
economic, politically than they have in the past and they do now in the federated arrangement of Yugoslavia.
It could be foreseeable that Croatia, as well as Bosnia and Hercegovina may eventually join such a union, whereas Serbia and Macedonia may feel much closer to the culture of Greece and Bulgaria. Where Montenegro will wind up is hard to predict. Slovenians and the better part of Croatians do not live on the Balkan peninsula. Their culture is not that of the Middle East.
Are Slovenians faced with the dilemma? Not at all. On the contrary, an opportunity will soon be knocking on their door. Slovenians all over the world should pay attention to this quiet but irreversible movement in Europe.
Close observations of moves by Mr. Gorbachev in the Soviet Union, a nagging suspicion might wake up some American political ostriches that a United Europe is really what keeps Mr. Gorbachev awake at night, and not M. X. Missiles.
Can one imagine a backward (third world economy) Soviet Union with its starving for freedom satellite countries? That is not just a nightmare for Gorbachev; it is a possibility. Between the U.S. SDI pro-

In Europe the religious factor will definitely play a major roll in shaping of a super-state. Western culture which is synonymous with Christianity, may be the major player in br-inging Eastern Europe together as a “Super State.” It is absolutely natural to see Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary recognize where their future lies, and a fact of a United Europe by the year 2,000 may force the Soviets to reduce arms and divisions, like it or not.
The future of the church is in the east, admits Cardinal Koenig of Vienna. The east is not the east where Pope John Paul II is from. In Poland 75% of the young people participate regularly in religious events. The majority believes in miracles. In Yugoslaiva polls indicate better than 55% of the young people admit to being religious. The majority of readers should be aware of the Miracles in Medjugorje, which is one of the most unusual contemporary religious events taking place daily in the so called communist country. I wish it was Socialist, like for instance Sweden.
Let me quote philosopher George Santayana, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” As of this date in Yugoslavia too many still suffer from amnesia regarding the nation’s recent history. CORNISH HENS A LA BOURBON
8 Cornish Hens 1 1/2 C. melted butter Salt & pepper to season 1/2 C. bourbon 8 Tbsp. currant jelly Wash hens thoroughly, and dry with a paper towel. Fill breast with stuffing and fasten neck skin on underside with toothpicks or skewers. Stuff cavity. Place hens on a baking sheet breast side up. Mix salt and pepper with 1/2 C melted butter and pour over them. Place in 425° oven. Roast 20 minute basting 3 times with bourbon and 1 cup melted butter.
Reduce heat to 350 and roast 30 minutes more. Continuing to baste every 15 minutes. Turn breast side down and cook for 15 minutes. If drippings evaporate, add a bouillon cube dissolved in 1 C. water and be sure to baste so the fowl is juicy. Pour melted currant jelly over the hens the last half hour for a higher glaze.

KIDNEY STEW INGREDIENTS 3 lbs. pork kidneys 3 medium-sized onions (chopped)
2 Tbsp. shortening or fat 2 Tbsp. white flour 2 Tbsp. catsup 2 Tbsp. chili sauce or tomato sauce
2 Tbsp. sweet red paprika l pot hot water Remove skins from kidneys and cover with cold water in pot. Bring water to boil. Drain. Cut kidneys into bite-size pieces.
Heat shortening or fat in skillet and add chopped onions. Brown onions. Add kidneys and sprinkle flour and brown for 15 minutes, stirring as it cooks.
Add hot water to cover kidneys and simmer for 30 minutes, adding, meanwhile, ketchup, chili sauce, sweet paprika.
Optional: garlic powder and salt to your taste.

12 ounces chicken livers, trimmed and cut in halves 1 /4 cup all-purpose flour 4 tablespoons butter or margarine
11/2 cups thinly sliced onions
1 teaspoon paprika 1/2 teaspoon salt Pepper to taste 1 cup plain low-fat yogurt Coat livers with flour..Heat 3 tablespoons butter in a large skillet until foamy. Add livers and stir over high heat until browned. Remove with slotted spoon to bowl, melt remaining tablespoon butter in skillet. Add onions; reduce heat to
medium and, stirring occasionally, cook until tender.
Return livers to skillet; add paprika, salt and pepper; stir to mix. Cover and cook over medium-low heat about 10 minutes until livers are barely pink inside.
Add yogurt and stir just until heated through (do not let mixture boil).
Makes 4 servings. Per serving: 323 calories.
CHERRY CHEESE PIE (Makes one 9-inch pie)
/ (9-inch) graham cracker crumb crust
1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened I (14-ounce) can Sweetened condensed milk (NOT evaporated milk)
1/3 cup lemon juice from concentrate
1 teaspoon vanilla extract Canned cherry pie filling, chided
In large mixer bowl, beat cheese until fluffy. Beat in milk until smooth. Stir in lemon juice and vanilla. Pour into crust. Chill 3 hours or until set. Top with desired amount of pie filling before serving. Refrigerate leftovers.

My children are fussy about eating breakfast before going off to school. Are the lunches they cat at school nutritional? What do you suggest?
Good nutrition is crucial for proper growth. In addition, researchers have found that young minds perform better when fueled by nutritious food. But convincing children to eat a good breakfast and supplying them with a healthful lunch is not always easy.
Some experts suggest that breakfast should be a family affair as a way to encourage good morning eating habits among younger children. However, you may have to experiment to find the foods your children will want to eat in the morning. Ideally, there should be a source of protein, a bread or cereal, a fruit or vegetable, and a small amount of fat. Such a combination of food items ensures an immediate source of energy as well as calories that can be burned more slowly throughout the morning.
Lunches served in school cafeterias usually contain foods from the four basic groups. But peer pressure may cause children to throw away or swap parts of their lunches, or the food may simply not appeal to them. Ask them how
they like the food served at school. If you decide to make their lunches at home, serve foods they like, but limit the amount of “junk” food.
Homemade lunches usually include a sandwich of some kind. But there are alternatives. Leftovers from dinner may be heated and sent along in a wide-mouth thermos. For a change of pace, prepare a lunch consisting of beef-vegetable stew, bread or crackers, an apple and milk.
An important note for parents to remember: To get the proper amount of calcium, children must consume three to four cups of milk a day or the equivalent in dairy products such as cheese, yogurt, ice cream, sherbert or ice milk.
Limiting the amount of “junk” food can be done in many cases, especially when it comes to breakfast. Whole grain cereals should be substituted for those high in sugar.

Help or Hinderance?
The Warning Signs of Frostbite <

Current newspaper, radio, and television stories and commentaries have been addressing the never ending question, “Should English be taught to a child or should a child be exposed to a bilingual approach when English is not the primary/native language used in the household?”
Secretary of Education William Bennett has recently requested Congress to “relax the requirement that non-English speaking youngsters be taught most subjects in their own language in bilingual classes until their English becomes fluent.”
Secretary Bennett is, however, arguing that such children should be moved more quickly with greater con-centraton toward English; and at the same time allow local school (districts) to determine how to achieve this goal.
To those persons who did not grow up in a bicultural household this proposition seems a bit redundant: children should be moved at a careful and slower pace from one culture to another.
This is however, a myth. According to the late and noted neurologist, Dr. Wilder Pen-field, the “brain of a young child has special abilities to learn language that gradually diminishes as he/she grows up. If exposed to two or three languages in the same, low-key and direct “mother’s method” of learning the native language (i.e., Slovenian, Croatian,
Polish, etc.) he/she will learn it/them as easily and well.
“By the time the child becomes a teenager this neurological ability to absorb language easily is virtually gone. The teenager must now learn by a more difficult and less efficient “translation” process.
“Since the teenager will use these language units already programmed in his/her brain he/she will usually speak with an accent common to his/her native language.”
It seems, therefore, that a quick and concentrated effort to have a child learn English makes more sense rather than trying to move slowly in learning English in a school system.
Does this mean that a second/third language should not be learned in early childhood? No. Quite the contrary is true. A second/third language should be learned at an early age. Or a special program outside of normal school time (late afternoon/even-ings/Saturday/etc.) should be encouraged and established.
A prime example of this approach is the St. Vitus Slovenian Language School.
This school has been in existence since approximately 1953. Every Saturday morning from late August/September until late May/early June for approximately three hours. Children at this school learn not only the Slovenian language but also its culture, history, poetry, singing, and

Ohio Attorney General Anthony J. Celebrezze, Jr. has entered into a consent judgment with National Church Publications located in Mansfield requiring the company to pay $3,500 for civil penalties and costs. National Church Publications are also being asked to make restitution to 11 churches for violations of members.
According to Celebrezze’s 1985 suit National Church, located at 1140 Lexington Ave., would approach a congregation offering to produce a “free” pictoral church directory. The company claimed the copies would be furnished to individual families and to the church if members would permit themselves to be photographed. However, the suit charged that once the photographs were taken, families were solicited to purchase copies of the photographs, with the actual cost of the so-called “free” directory being built into the price of the photographs.
In the consent judgment filed with the Richland County Common Pleas Court, the Bush’s, who also operated under the name of Design-A-Directory, are permanently enjoined from:

. Continuously running a free offer when the price of the free goods has been included in the price of other goods being sold;

. Failing to notify consumers of their three day right to cancel a sales agreement resulting from a home solicitaton saile.

But only with the encouragement of both parents and teachers do the children learn about their past; and also about a different part of the world. Therefore, a child is exposed to two cultures: English (during the week), and Slovenian (on weekends).
It is under this type of structure that government and parental support should be given.
We do not live in a world where only one form of culture exists in a country. This and other reasons explain why so many American students have a difficult time understanding another country or language.
If we are able to have the opportunity to experience this exposure we are truly blessed with a life-long experience. Second, third, fourth, and fifth generations should attempt to make an effort to have this exposure. Without it we begin to deny our heritage and eventually see things from a more narrow perspective.

Frostbite happens when the fluid between the cells freezes and the cells themselves become dehydrated. It doesn’t take long for body tissues to freeze. In temperatures below zero degrees F., particularly when a cold wind cuts through the layer of warm air normally maintained around the body, frostbite can literally occur in a minute.
People who have been sweating or are wet from snow are more likely to experience frostbite because tissues freeze more easily when the body is wet. Touching bare hands to cold metal can cause immediate severe frostbite.
The warning signs of frostbite are a feeling of extreme cold in the affected part, followed by a burning sensation. At first, the skin turns red as the blood vessels dilate. Then it turns pale as the blood vessels constrict, and the affected part loses sensation. Sometimes the skin turns white, yellowish-white, or bluish-white. Severe frostbite can result in blistering, swelling, infection, and gangrene.
If you or your child should become frostbitten, gently warm the affected part by submerging it in warm water or covering it with a warm cloth. A child may be wrapped in warm blankets. Do not put the frostbitten part near a fire, hot stove, or under hot water, as these may cause severe burns. Do not rub the skin; this may cause tissue damage and infection.
Handle the area gingerly. Rewarming a frostbitten part of the body can be very painful, and may require a painkiller.
If you begin to experience frostbite when you cannot come indoors, tuck the cold part of your body into a warm part, like under the arm or between the thighs.
Frostbite is usually not serious. Human tissue survives injury from cold temperatures remarkably well. Color and sensation return within minutes. Marija Pomagaj Information Need
Archbishop Sustar of Ljubljana and the Franciscans of Brezje, Slovenia, are asking for photos and information about devotion to Marija Pomagaj, Our Lady of Brezje, wherever this may be found throughout the world.
The church of Brezje, Slovenia, contains the famous shrine of Marija Pomagaj, Our Lady of Brezje. The archbishop of Ljubljana and the Franciscans, guardians of this shrine, have petitioned the Holy Father to raise this church to the rank of a Minor Basilica. This year, on the first Sunday of September, the 80th anniversary of the crowning of the picture of Marija Pomagaj will take place. They hope to get the ‘honor’ of minor basilica by that time.
However, the church authorities in Rome have asked for documentation that devotion to Marija Pomagaj, Our Lady of Brezje, is well-spread throughout the world, not only in Slovenia. Archbishop Sustar and the Franciscans have asked for our help, since they need these photos and information by May.
What informaton and documentation is needed? Color photos (6 x 8 or 5 x 7) of the churches, altars and pictures of Marija Pomagaj, wherever such shrines are
located, when and how veneration began in that place, when the shrine was erected or when the church window was made, in other words, a short history of erection and veneraton.
Many people may have pictures of Marija Pomagaj hanging in their homes or have private shrines in the house or in the garden. They are asked to take a photo, write where the “Marija Pomagaj” is located, when it was set up, and send these materials to Brezje.
Fr. Mirko, local superior in Brezje, writes that they have to get all this material to Rome before the month of May in order to get the ‘honor’ by the first Sunday of September. Speed is necessary and essential.

1987 marks the anniversaries of three significant occasions in the life of his eminence G. Emmett Cardinal Carter, Archbishop of Toronto.
February 2nd was the 25th anniversary of his ordination as bishop. March 1st is his 75th birthday, and May 22nd will be the 50th anniversary of the Cardinal’s ordinaton to the priesthood.

Frank Rožnik, 94, died Friday morning, Feb. 20 at the Slovene Home for the Aged.
He was the husband of Julia (nee Rozman) formerly Doberdruk; father of the late Henry; step-father of Frank and Alfred Doberdruk; grandfather of six; greatgrandfather of seven; and the son of John and Josephine (nee Gospodaric) Rožnik (both dec.).
He was a member of the South Slovenian Catholic Union of America No. 173, and the Waterloo Pensioners. Prior to his retirement he had been employed as a chemical worker at Gilron Products.
The funeral Mass was Monday, Feb. 23 at St. Jerome Church. Interment at All Souls Cemetery. Grdina Funeral Home, 17010 Lake Shore Blvd. handled the funeral arrangements.
St. Vitus Christian Mothers’ Club monthly meeting will be held Wednesday, March 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium. The speaker will be Roselyn Sheer-McLeod, who’s topic will be Self-Esteem.

Tushars Celebrate 60th Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. John Tushar of Wickliffe celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Jan. 24 with a Mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Wickliffe, where they renewed their wedding vows and a reception at Wickliffe Civic Center, hosted by their family.
The couple were married Jan. 26, 1927 in McKees Rocks, Pa.
Tushar was employed by Ohio Gear, later Towmotor and Caterpillar, for 27 1/2 years until his retirement in 1970. His wife was employed by the former H&R Manufacturing Co. in Euclid for 27 years and retired in 1970.
Their family includes daughters, Elizabeth Pinney of Kansas City, Mo., and Marylyn Valentine of Kalamazoo, Mich., and son, Raymond John of North Olmsted. There are 10 grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren.

Joseph Boznar also glowingly about the
Man of the Year honoree. He stated that his many years of volunteer service reach to the era when Boy Scout Troop 250 was very active in the parish and the St. Clair neighborhood. He has worked with the St. Vitus Dads Club, St. Vitus Ushers Club, has been a counter Monday evenings for years, as well as a Summer and Fall Festival worker, and just simply a man “who sees work, and goes and does it.”
Father Boznar went on to say of the male honoree, “If he had dreams of taking it easy after his retirement, he is not talking about it, because his days are filled with work on behalf of people in our parish, and in the neighborhood. And if I tell you that he is an avid fisherman, you know that this year’s Man of the year is Frank Siewiorek.”
We congratulate Mary Turk and Frank Siewiorek on being chosen Woman and Man for 1987 and hope that God will grant them health to continue the good they have done for St. Vitus Parish.

In response to my recent article about nicknames, in which I asked readers if they knew the names of persons which I couldn’t recall, a number of persons wrote letters or called me on the phone.
Gwendolyn (Slapnik) Washington remembered that Rigor Mortis was Richard Mordus. Yak Cercek and Bob Kozan called me about Seven-eighths (7/8). He was Frankie Strah. Also received a lengthy letter from Beanie (Albina) Zimmerman about how she enjoyed reading about the old nicknames.
1 might mention that ninety percent of the names that were submitted by John Launch and myself were from the Saranac and Holmes avenues area. Of the 114 names combined from both writers, a total of 38 are still with us.
In retrospect, Saranac Rd. in the 1920s was known as Raisinjack Boulevard. When you rode a streetcar, the conductor would announce loud and clear, “Saranac Rd. -Raisinjack Boulevard.” This usually brought a smile from those who rode beyond.
Many young ladies were em-barassed to alight at Saranac Rd. No doubt due to the unsavory reputation of the area. They would get off at Aspin-wall Ave. and would prefer to walk two or three blocks to their destination.
Now on Saranac and Holmes the short space of about a half mile from E. 152 St. to E. 162 St. there are about 39 businesses in the Collinwood area.
It was a bustling community in the 1920s and it was also the time of prohibition. Many a “kotliček” (still) was perking in that neighborhood. You

could get a drink of “Spaga” for 25 cents most anywhere in the neighborhood. That is probably why Saranac Rd. got the moniker “Raisinjack Blvd.”
I know that many old timers will be delighted to see the names of the business places that lined both sides of the two streets.

Slovenian Violinist Performs
A memorable cultural evening is planned by Cleveland State University for March 3rd.
One of the outstanding violinist-virtuosos Mr. Miha Pogačnik will perform on Tuesday, March 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the C.S.U. Main .Classroom Auditorium (East 22nd Street and Chester). Accompanying Mr. Pogačnik will be a concert pianist, Mrs. Deidre Irons, herself a highly acclaimed artist from New Zealand.

Advistory Finance Board Formed at St. Vitus
Since the beginning of the New Year church law requires that dioceses and parishes, bishops and pastors establish Finance Boards to help them in the administration of temporal goods under their care.
Previously this kind of work was done by the parish coun-cilmen and diocesan con-sultors. The Diocesan guidelines state,' “This Finance Board is a consultative board of the Catholic people, knowledgeable and adept in financial administration. While this board does not administer (day-to-day) temporalities of the parish they assist the pastor who represents the parish in its temporal matters and juridic affairs.”
Accordingly such a consultative Finance Board was recently established at St. Vitus Parish. Members are the pastor and five lay parishioners with experience in accounting and finance: Mrs. Josephine Ambrosic, Mr. Joseph Hočevar, Mr. Frank Sega, Mr. Stane Kuhar and Mr. Joseph S. Baškovič.
Some duties of the Finance Board will consist of: the preparation and presentation of the annual parish budget, and continuing study of parish revenue, reviewing all contracts over $5,000 between the parish and outside parties, reviewing proposed major expenditures for the parish, and so forth.
At the meeting on Monday, Feb. 16, the Finance Board considered the following proposals and questions: feasibility study for additional washrooms and storage space in the auditorium, a permanent wheel chair access ramp to the church, and painting of St. Mary and St. Joseph shrines in the church, and raising the Sunday offerings.
Slovenia, Yugoslavia. In 1980, he organized a cultural festival in the Cathedral of Chartres (France) attended by over 2,000 representatives from 30 countries.
IDRIART (Institute for the Development of Intercultural Relations through Arts), directed by Mr. Pogačnik, was founded in Geneva, Switzerland in 1983 for the purpose of facilitating the organization of such festivals throughout the world. The organization is now represented in 25 countries and has sponsored festivals in the U.S., Australia, China, Europe, South America, attracting large audiences not of art specialists but of people who seek to know themselves through the best and most universal language - the Arts.
Mr. Pogačnik has just completed a highly successful two month concert tour of European countries. In March he is scheduled to perform in many U.S. cities, from Texas to California, New York to the State of Washington and Vancouver (Canada). In addition,
as director of IDRIART, ' will head the 1987 Festivals Dublin (Ireland), Sao Pa11 (Brazil), Cusco-Machupicd (Peru), Bled (Yugoslavia Quindao (China), Prag1 (Czechoslovakia), Trondhd (Norway).

Abraham D. Slaght and Slovenian Flomi

The land on which stands the Slovenian National Home at E. 65th and St. Clair has a rich historical past.
On these pages, we have already written about the Diemers who occupied the old mansion from 1873 to 1918.
Since then, while foraging through very old documents, we have unearthed information that pre-dates the Diemers, a time when there was a large farm of 70 acres on the SNH site. The acreage extended from E. 55th to E. 65th - north of St. Clair to the Lake Erie old shore line.
The former owner of this vast farmland was an Abraham D. Slaght, who in 1817 left his Morristown, N.J. birthplace with his family and other emigrants.
They journeyed with heavily-laden Conestoga wagons drawn by ox-teams, a rather slow and wearisome trek. The 31 year-old Slaght finally arrived in Euclid Village where he made his first family home.
In 1832, Abraham Slaght purchased the tract of pristine forestland at E. 65 and St. Clair, on what now stands the Slovenian National Home. He devoted his energies to clearing off the timber, some of which he used to bunu a ».um-
fortable home. The trees ^ mostly maple, sycamore ^ chestnut.
He cultivated the rich bl3£ soil and was very successful1 his farming. His 'v'^ Taphenis (nee DickersO11 whom he married in 1^' bore him 10 children, f0' sons and six daughters.
The road on East 65th to1 lake was called Slaght Stfe from 1830 to 1860s, but ^ changed after that Madison, Garland, Madison, and finally t° present name, Addison. .
After more than 1^ decades of agricultural lab0' Mr. Slaght retired. By 18?* had sold the property as i* ^ increased greatly in value- , spent the rest of his life married daughter since , wife had passed away in 1^ > He died at the age of 8'
