| 11 | GEODETSKI VESTNIK | 64/1 | UVODNIK | EDITORIAL Blaž Mozetič predsednik Zveze geodetov Slovenije | president of the Association of Surveyors of Slovenia SAMOZAŠČITA NI SAMOIZOl ACIJA SElF-PROTECTION IS NOT SElF-ISOl ATION Tako dolgo sem odlašal s pisanjem uvodnika za Geodetski vestnik, da me je prehitela epidemija koro- navirusa in z njo povezano krizno dogajanje. V tem času sta postali zelo priljubljeni besedi samozaščita in samoizolacija, ki sta dodobra napolnili naš vsakdan in razburkali prostor okrog nas. Drugi poskus. Ostanite zdravi in srečno! | 12 | GEODETSKI VESTNIK | 64/1 | UVODNIK | EDITORIAL I have postponed my writing of the editorial for Geodetski vestnik for so long that coronavirus epidemic, with all the resulting emergency measures, caught up with me. Only time will tell if that was good or bad for the editorial itself. To be fair, extreme circumstances create excellent opportunities and sources for the content of an editorial, of course, taking into consideration all the guidance and instruction of the authorities aimed to prevent the spread of infections. Expressions self-protection and self-isolation appear to be gaining in popularity. They have become omnipresent in our lives and caused considerable commotion in our environments. Some people are coping with the problem of working from home, while others are faced with a much more serious dilemma: how to find work in the first place. According to the authorities, the situation is severe and has to be confronted with great responsibility towards oneself and others. And in these times, when the ‘fever’ of working lives has subsided in some fields, the mind of the thinking surveyor cannot rest still. Organisers of the 2020 Land Surveying Day have cancelled the event and plan to have it when the situ- ation is expected cool down. The decision was self-protective, while not self-isolative, because it is not good for a profession to go into self-isolation – the same being true for its fellow travellers and followers. I understand that the Land Surveying Day treats its field with a great deal of sensitivity and love and would like to, I hope as an act of goodwill, to protect is from irrational intrusions from other professions. Emotionally, self-protection makes sense, but it can also lead to self-isolation, which is arguably lethal for a profession in the long term. That is why other approaches, like self-promotion and self-initiative, might be only appropriate. Land surveying has been an inseparable part of society and its development for a long time. Both are adapting, changing, developing, both are creating hand in hand; they also react to different “viruses” that attack their health. A healthy society and a healthy land-surveying profession, both including individual land surveyors, make it possible for the expectations to be fulfilled, they both make sustainable growth and development – one could say existence – to be possible for everybody. See you at the 2020 Land Surveying Day on 17 th September 2020. The second attempt. Stay healthy and good luck!
