Obisk bosta žirala japonski admiral Fu-i in ameriško poslaništvo. Almost avaryona knows what an affair like this is, but if you don't, now is your chance to find out. Besides having an enjoy, able evening, you will be doing your bit for Jugoslav Relief, as all proceeds from this affair will go toward this worthy cause. A "irgaiav" will ba a new experiment for most of the Circle membership, and all are looking forward to participating in thi» affair. We have diligently listened to all suggestions and ideas from those who know about and how to present a trgatev, and it is the intention of the Circle to follow this advice as closely as possible. Draasad In Slovene national costume, the children will try and portray one of the most colorful festival customs of the homeland, gaining an experience they, no doubt, will never forget. Tha ceremony of tha trgatev will be completely in the hands of the Circle members themselves, with Bill Kovacic as the "zupan" (mayor) and Edward Udovich, the "deputy." The older girls and boys of the Circle will perform the duty of policing the merrymakers. Wa, therefore, graciously ask all our parents and friends to come and participate, and cooperate with the Circle in this effort In doing so, you will also be helping to teach and instill the children with a tradition that should not be allowed to be forgotten Klobase, slruklji, and pottca, are just some of the tasty food t« be served, and for your dancing pleasure we have engaged the services of the Pucel-Fois godba. There you have the set-up, and we do hooe to see all of you at the TRGATEV Saturday night! ANN SANNEMANN, Mgr. Perfect Circle No. 26-SNP^ Slovenes Erase Fascist Traces in Trieste I By Theodore Andrica Theodore Andrica, staff correspondent of the Cleveland Pre», sent the following interesting on-the-spot report from Trieste where he is now stationed, studying the situation in the port city and its hinterland. Mr. Andrica is a well-known correspondent and is personally acquainted with many of our people in Cleveland. TRIESTE (By Moil): Men are hard at work demolishing the cement and stone pill boxes which the Germans and the fascists have erected in Trieste. The people of "Pri-morsko," as the Slovenes call this part of Europe, mentally and spiritually have not yet demolished. To fully appreciate this state of affairs one must recall the full story of Trieste and of "Primorsko" since the first world war. For the Slovenes of Trieste and of Primorsko World War II has been merely a brutal continuation of a period of 24 years of Italian oppression. The memory of these past 24 years is so vivid and bitter that the average Slovene here becomes somewhat panicky at the thought that the great powers will not unite Trieste and Primorsko with the Slovenian part of Jugoslavia. This fear and uncertainty is largely responsible for the tonsion that rules Trieste and Primorsko today. The British and Americans feel that the Tito government is rushing things much too fast and that the fate of Trieste and Primorsko must be settled in an orderly manner. The Slovenes feel, on the other hand, that the ethnical composition of Primorsko. together with the bitter and costly war the Slovenes waged against the Germans and the fascists during the past five years, entitle them to fulfill their dream, that of rejoining Jugoslavia now. That is why Trieste and Primorsko are tense today. Before World Wail U Mussolini's government virtually forbade outsiders to visit the countryside in Primorsko Mussolini disliked the idea of strangers seeing from close quarters how Slovenes were being Italianized. This was the reason for my inability to visit this province during my former trips to Europe the moonlight picnic, we're sorry for the unlntenti«med omission.— lastly, don't forket the Vinska Trgatev for Jugoslav War Relief The Jugoslavs, particularly the Slovenes, never ceased protests* against the inclusion of 600.000 Slovenes under Italian rule, a*JJ peace conference of 1918 dendrtL The Slovenes claimed that the lul-ians treated the "Primorsko" Slovenes brutally. The world appeared to bavt I»" 'little attention to the plight of W "Primorsko" Slovenes. "To the English wi' were just another Balkan tribe and America too far." a Trieste Slovene told mr After spending a week in Trw« and especially in the country«® around it there is no doubt in my mind that "Primorsko" is P"^ inantly Slovene. Moreover. Russian sources denied .hat its foreign commissar knew Invthing about the communique, St the report was «sued without 5„letev's knowledge. It would be logical that Russia would demand Trieste for Jugoslavia. The latest reports confirm Rush's claim that the Jugoslav-Italian problem has not yet been settled. AH of which shows that a great deal of propaganda is being circulated against Russia and Jugoslavia. Russia's demand for the control of Tripolitania and Eritrea is not fantastic at all. which is the way as it is being cabled. Russia must have an outl et through the Dardanelles into the Mediterranean. As a great power— the only great power in Europe now -she is entitled to this control. Why should the Mediterranean bccome an axclusive British sea? The Mediterranean is closer to Russia than to Britain. Personally I am against any foreign control of any country or territory. But since this is now seemingly "impossible" and since the arrangement of colonies is such, why jshould Britain have exclusive right to this control? Wc must remember that it was Russia that suffered the most in World War II. And it was Russia that really defeated the Axis powers in Europe with the help of America and Britain. Were it not for Russia's heroic armies and America's help, Britain would have n defeated.. Turning to the Trieste problem gain, our readers will no doubt be interested in reading a report by odore Andrifca of the Cleveland ress published elsewhere in this sue of Prosveta. Mr Andrica is writing from Trite where he talked with our peo-(there and v^ited many Slovene •ns and villages in Primorje 1 think that his report is the best ft to have come from Trieste and fcnorje after the war. In it he hows that he has very good knowl-dge of the situation and that he nows our people well. There have been other reports torn Trieste in the daily press be-■his, but most of theM, with the xception of Edd Jonson's of the Ihicago Sun last spring, were Brit-ih propaganda. It was this propa-nda against Jugoslavia and against ussia that caused so much trouble Trieste. I am still hopeful that Trieste and entire Slovene region to the iver Soia, including Triii, will be (eluded into Slovenia under Jugoslavia. That Is a lot of piople, evin If they are Japs That reminds me of an essay that I once read. • Schopenhauer, the pessimistic Herman philosopher, argued that sympathy in the human being depends on fear. He illustrated by saying that people would be immediately sympathetic towards the vt.'llns, if they heard that in the adjacent county three people were cold-blnodily murdered by a fiend. Yes, he argued, If the crime was committed in fur away Chins no one would pay heed. Sympathy, Schopenhauer said, Is thus amused becuuse the individual can readily place himself In the portion of his mighhor, whereas the victims In China are too far away to threaten his safety. This msv or not be true, Sympathy doesn't necessarily have to be based on fesr, but it has deeper roots In moral righteousness. Whither fear arouses sympathy or not, certainly the fear of total destruction in the next war should motivate mankind not only to abol-lrh the use of stomlc bombs, but to foi ever forsake war us an instvu-ii cnt of national policy. And that will only be possible by Inaugurating a just peace for all ptoplt, and by raising the economic well-being of sll people. ncreased Mail o Jugoslavia CHICAGO.—Effective at once, mail rvict to Jugoslavia is extended to umprise all classes of regular Postal Union) mails, that is to suy, tt'is, post cards, printed matter KVneral, printed matter for the •'nd, commercial papers, samples merchandise, and small packets, "utlnied in part II of the current Wici.-.l Postal Guide, with the fol- limitations: Printed matter (except printed Halt« i for the blind), commercial I"1 in pics of merchandise, and "toll packets are limited to 1 pound r package. The free-lance writer happened to have a firsthand know! edge of conditions in West Virginia and asked the press-agent what towns the operators wanted writ ten up. Whtn he got the list, the maga zine writer wan an used to note that the towns mentioned had, for years before the war, been known as "model towns." That is, there wa» running water and tie .Iricity, some sort of school facilities and play ground», etc. By no means were any of these towns typical of the run of West Virginia mine "patches." The freelancer, being a man of integrity, turned dow;i the assignment when he was w>t permitted to write up the usi,al condition«, as well as the unusual which only prevailed in a few pickcd show places. Story of Dr. Betty With the above, goes a story in The United Mine Workers Journal for August 1 last. It is the story of a young woman doctor named Elizabeth Hayes. "Doctor Hetty," us the coaldiggers ¿all her, was employee as company doctor by the Qhaw.i u Mining Company of St. Mary's, IV In 1042 to succeed her father w.u had been company doctor for thirty-nine years. As soon as she started on her new Job, she looked over the sanitary conditions in the little towns of Fore«, Byrnedale und Hollywood, Pa., where the company operated mines, und found them shocking. Force, which was typical, was built more than forty years a$°-Two rows of tumble-down, weather-beaten shacks which have not been improved or repaired since 1905, shelter the Shawmut diggers. "Toilet* are outdoors behind the houses. The wells that supply the town with water are at the foot of the hill on top of which the shacks are situated." Ludicrous Demands Indeed "Doctor Betty" went to the company officials with the demand that an adequate water and sewerage system be set up, that the shacks be fitted with indoor toilets and bath-tubs and that m w foundations be laid under the flimsy structures. The officials laughed at her demands. They told the doctor that no improvements could be undertaken because of the war emergency and that her idea that the water supply of the town was contaminated by the outdoor toilets was ludicrous. Then the Shawmut locals of the United Mine Workers of America went into action. They called in a firm of chemists to examine the area1» water supply. The chemists reported that five out of every seven welts in the thtcc towns were contaminated by outhouse drainage, The eomtmny refused to accent this report. The State Department of Health was called in, verified the report, and otdett d the company to clean up. When nothing happened, Dr. Haves rtaigmd to devote her whole tirrc to the Job of cleaning up the town, meanwhile treating her former patients in u private capacity. At a mass-mfrtin« of the miners of the throe towns held last month. ing, "We are not going back into thoge mines without a doctor." The diggers before the walk-out had agreed to pay more into the monthly, medical check-offs, ai«d to pay higher rents to offset the cost of improvements. But the company would not meet with the local officials or with Dr. Hayes. The case Is now before the War Labor Board and Dr. Hayes has consented to stay on, tf the company clears up the area. Of course the press-agent for the mine-owners would have steered the magazine writer mighty clear of iuch hell-holes as the Shawmut operations, had the latter consented to write about "improved conditions'* in the mining towns. All across the mining country today arc replicas of Force, Byrnedale Will Atomic Bomb Make Farce of "Victory7 To the extent peace depends upon force, the atomic bomb may make a farce out of VE and VJ days. The Board, on which Great Britain, the United States and Canada are represented, handles distribution of food to members of the United Nations and to the liberated' peoples of Europe. Our increased commitments, which have made the rcimposition of meat rationing necessary, are due to the needs of liberated countries and of the Pacific •war, the demands of troop movements and ship's stores, and a serious decline in Canadian livestock slaughtering in inspected plants. Low Consumption Agencies dealing with food distribution in liberated areas of Europe reveal sharply reduced world output of foodstuffs, especially meat, due to the disorganization caused by years of war, the manpower shQrtage on farms, lack of fertilizers in some areas, and drought in Australia and other food-producing areas. Dangerously low consumption in many parts of Europe is „the result. While 2,000 calories a day is considered an emergency ration, insufficient to maintain a working population, the ration in Belgium and Holland has now improved to only 1,700 or 1,800 a day. In Canada and the United States the average consumption last year was some 3,300 calories, in Britain, 2,293. People engaged in heavy work consume over 4,000 calories a day.
