Nova stranka predstavlja progresivni amerikanizem. Robert J. Bulkley, United States Senate,-Washington, D. C. in Hon. Vic Donahey, United States Senate, Washington, D. C. Pišite takoj, da ne bo prepozno. Storili boste do'bro delo stotinam vaših lastnih rojakov, ki danes po krivici trpijo radi stare brutalne postave. Mi smo storili svojo dolžnost napram tem rojakom. i........................... BESEDA IZ NARODA ■--•---•-•—•-» ' ■ « «-»-* ■■«-« «-• * --« * » m ---- -»-„ Rev. M. Jager: Za matere! In zabava, kakor vam jo daje oder v šoli sv. Vida, je res lepa in plemenita. 71 »■ « « » <—>—...... ............... I j Kaj pravite! Imena imelo skupno sv. obhajilo. Prošeni so vsi člani, da se gotovo udeleže. Ob treh popoldne bo blagoslovitev trakov s posebnimi obredi v cerkvi. Nastopili bodo vsi trije naši cerkveni pevski zbori. Suhoparnih govorov ne bo. Glavni govornik pa bo g. kanonik Oman. Po iz-črpanem. programu bo ustanovna seja Zveze društev Najsv. Imena iz vseh štirih slovenskih župnij v Clevelandu. Zvtečer bo g. Grdina kazal slike, katere bodo zelo zanimive in ki vzbujajo tako zanimanje ob vsaki priliki. Glavni namen naše nedeljske proslave je ustanovitev Zveze slovenskih društev Najsv. Imena. To so jih gledali Amerikanci, posebno ko so se ti fantje in dekleta postavili v gručo in zapeli lepo slovensko pesem. Vidu in enkrat v New-burgu. Rev. The location was wisely chosen as there is no place more conducive to meditation. Retreat began with Mass at 10:30 a. m. in the auditorium which was followed by lunch at 11:30. At 12:30 the first conference was given by the Retreat Master, Msgr. McDon-ough of Our Lady of the Lake Seminary. A second conference followed at about 1:30. Though the conferences were rather lengthy they were also interesting. The first- conference dealt with the reasons for the creation of our Universe and the second with the importance of living. An unexpected surprise took place when the Rev. Bishop Schrembs arrived to officiate in ceremonials during the Holy Hour at the close of which he bestowed the papal blessing upon the participants of the Re treat. VISIT TO ST. May devotions will be held every evening during May at 7:15 p. m., except on Sundays when the devotions start at 7 p. m. SI. Mary's Spectator and Commentator THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK "Seek the Things that are Above" The month of May brings thoughts of our Heavenly Mother—the Blessed Virgin and tomorrow in many Catholic churches and chapels the children cf Mary shall meet to crown her "Queen of the May." Indeed as children of this earth, we can look to Mary for inspiration. What is an ideal life? An ideal life would be so to live as to be "an inspiration, strength and blessing to those whose lives are touched by ours." Such was our dear Lady's life task. To lead others onward, upward, heavenward, was her earnest joy and endeavor. Such should be also the noble aim of her children. How can we accomplish this superhuman task? By living for the things abeve. If we endeavor to see God's hand in all that happens and to live as "pilgrims and strangers," that seek a country, then our lives, though exteriorly simple and commonplace, will be as beacon lights guiding souls to that blessed region called "Home," where with all we love on earth and in heaven, we hope to pass our eternity. For each of us, soon "time shall be no. longer" so for our short stay let us beseech our Mother—the Blessed Virgin to help us lead good lives and direct others to do likewise. Devotions to Mary are especially appropriate during this month of May. —Lexicus. FRIDAY NITE PARTY The Friday Nite Party clicked with everyone who was present, and complete results, plus odds and ends shall be presented in these columns next week. BASEBALL BULLETIN The Holy Name Juniors Baseball nine had a nice workout last Saturday on the home grounds. The boys have sent out the report that they shall play independent ball and are willing to meet the nearby parishes in home and home scheduled games. Let's hear from you, St. Vitus, St. Christine's, St. Lawrence, etc. "Do you have a daddy and mother?" "Yes, I have a mother!" "Where is your mother?" "She's working, Miss Smith!" "What- does your mother do, Rose-maiy?" (Supplemented by our prexy.) "She irons, sews, and cooks, Miss Smith.' (Aside to us): "Incidentally she has no parents, but someone has befriended her and so given her mother love." So said Miss Smith. Another bit of conversation chanced upon in a corridor: "How long have you been here?' (To a neat little lass of about 8.) "I don't remember, but an awfully long time!" Inquiry and answer gleaned from another, she is actually in two years, but it's a VERY long time! Honestly, hearts were touched, and we learned many new things, just seeing, makes it easier to bear up under our petty trials; I doubt if we can ever erase these pictures from our minds. We walked out at 5:30, a sober group of Scdalists, leaving behind many happy girls, who just hunger for a little bit of kindness, meagerly meted out to them! Many have parents, either one or both, but they themselves, are NOT WANTED! Truly this was a wonderful afternoon! May God have mercy on them and grant them happiness! Secretary. STATION YLS The Young Ladies' Sodality held their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 26. The main topic under discussion was our Reception and Crowning this Sunday, May 1st. CHIMES OF LIRA This time I'll start with the announcement of another member and this it Mrs. Victoria Fidelic, a soprano, and a good one, too. Welcome, Mrs. Fidelic, the Lira-ites greet you sincerely. At the same time we are greeting Bob and Sambo and the entire gang of European boys and girls who arrived yesterday from the Old Country. They landed in New York Thursday, spent the day there and Friday evening took two twelve-passenger triple fnotor planes. It truly was something special to meet this colorful group at the airport. There were plenty of reporters to meet them at the landing port, too. That's the reason why I was pushed back and had to be satisfied by taking only a few snapshots of the landing planes. All the passengers seemed to take the ride upon the sky heights without ill effects, except Sambo and Jurij. These two were somewhat dizzy once they set their feet upon solid ground; but I assure you that by now both are feeling all right Bob is quite busy showing the city's high • spots to boys and girls from Europe; but most of his attention seems to be focused upon two charming ladies. I believe they are Miss Stefi and Miss Zofka. These are the two ladies I spoke of last Saturday I guess that Bob is in for wedding bells, but which one of the two girls will it be? I think I'll find out Sunday, the first of May, when Bob will come to the St. Vitus school auditorium to be present at Lira's musical comedy "MARI." There I'll be able to observe them better and see how things stand. I think that all the boys and girls from abroad will be down at the school also. How about some of you parishioners coming down to the school tomorrow at 7:30 p. m. I guarantee yu a swell time and you'll have a chance to meet Bob, and Stefi and Zofka and all the rest of the group. I'm sure you'll find Sambo and Jurij quite entertaining, not to mention Jurij's girl friend, Pepina, who also came with the young group. Come to Lira's musical performance and you will enjoy two things, namely, you will see a good comedy presented by the Lira-ites, and you will personally meet the people I am speaking of Come, you young boys and girls of DRAMATIC GUILD MEETING This coming Friday the Dramatic Guild shall have its regular monthly meeting in the Study Club Rooms. All members are requested to b present. The summer program shall be discussed. ST. MARY'S SODALITY NEWS REVEALING PICTURE Yes, verily that may be the title under which just such an experience would be captioned. Our Sodalists under the sponsorship of the D.S.U. marched to the gates of St. Joseph's Orphanage on Woodland last Sunday. Laden with packages, oblivious of appearance, and quietly determined to show a wee bit of interest in a little bit of forgotten humanity. Such they are. those poor little souls, eager for love, responsive to the least show of kindness. The sight is so touching that —but" let me clarify all this for our readers—my pen is just propelled at a terrific speed in tune to my emotions! ! VISION: Approaching the gates— a review of pensive yet eager faces pressed to countless windowpanes on the third floor of a dark, stalwart building—vigorous waving of arms in welcome! Our swarming of Big Sisters' engulfing little tots of 5 to 10 years of age. Seating ourselves cn their teeny little stools, and listening to their tales. Some reserved, others lively, all courteous. Eagerly they showed us their accomplishments. They tangled us all up in "Did you ever see a Lassis?" The Committee in charge arranged a peanut hunt for the tots and the holder cf the most peanuts walked off with the prise. Other games were played and prizes awarded. The Grand March was a touching scene, each child walked to our D. S. U. Moderator, Rev. Father Bork, and received a gift—these were plen-, tiful enough to last out to three apiece! It was comical the tinier the tot the larger the package! After their treat of ice cream and cake, we dressed them in our Easter outfits, and held a style show—did they strut in this finery! Now they showed us their dormitories, school rooms, work and play rooms, infirmary and well—just everything! Very impressive—six-year olds make their own beds, and these are rather high—personally I think they need stepladders to get on them! The following conversation was for our benefit—it is not just word for word, but I onlv desire that you should get the drift of it! Here's the picture: A three-foot bit of girl, dressed in simple blue polka dot, shod as every other inmate. A blue ribbon adorning shiny blonde hair! (Conversation): "Tell these young ladies your name!" "Rosemary Wanca, Miss Smith!" "How old are you?" "I am six years old!" Newburg Hews CYO RETREAT Last Sunday two representatives from our parish attended a one-day retreat held at the new John Carroll University under the sponsorship of the Catholic Youth Organization of the Cleveland Diocese. The day of prayer and recollection was interspersed with interesting and timely conferences given by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. James McDonough L.L.D., rector of the Lady of the Lake Seminal y and we hear that all of the five hundred young men and women who attended were delighted with the whole experience. It is hoped that next year's retreat will find at least twenty of the St. Lawrence younger set in attendance. MARY'S MONTH It is idle and unnecessary to inquire whether devotion to Mary is practised more in our day than it was in the past. The devotion has never varied in degree but only in its phases; for love is ingenious and inventive and is ever seeking to express itself in different ways. One of these phases is the daily May Devotion customary in Slovenian parishes and held in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title Queen of May. This beautiful and tender custom originated in the hearts of cur Catholic people themselves. Like so many other local festivals and customs of our "Newburg," daily May devotions prove how the lives of our God-fearing people are influenced by thoughts and ideas of the supernatural. While we do not wish to brag, devotion to Mary finds its greatest expression right here in our community. In proof of this we need merely mention the plans' for a new shrine to our Blessed Mother to be erected in our church and a probable novena devotion in Her honor. SCOUTING Mr. Hughes, new field executive in cur district, has paid a pleasant visit to Troop No. 216 last Tuesday evening. He spoke to the Boy Scouts and encouraged them to take an active part in that annual scout affair "The Scout Circus" to be held in the Arena within the next two weeks. So if a scout visits ycu in the near future, "please be kind" and purchase a ticket to the circus if you can at all afford to do so. THE SERENADERS The Minstrel Show players and the audience (and a large one indeed) both enjoyed last Sunday's show The Serenaders did a gQod job and this columnist joins his thanks with those cf many others for an evening filled with fun and laughter. We hope to see and hear more of you. All Around Town ATTENTION COLLINWOOD! On Sunday, May 1, (tomorrow), Branch No. 10, S2Z is presenting a drama called "Črnošolec" (The Seminarian) in five acts. The play will be given in the Slovene language at the Slovene Home on Holmes Ave. There will be variety entertainment between the acts. The play will begin promptly at 6:30 p. m. After the play there will be dancing to the music of Frankie Yankovic and his orchestra. Dancing will begin promptly at 9:30 p. m. and the admission will be only 25c for dancing alone; for dance and play it will be 50c. You can't afford to miss this gala entertainment, so be sure to be there and I'll be seeing you all. FRANCES «A. SUSEL, Reporter. Don't forget your mother on Mother's Day, Sunday May 8. PRINCIPLE A Catholic lawyer was invited by some non-Catholics of prominence to dine with them on a Friday evening. He went to the dinner, ate the fish that was served as one of the courses and abstained from all the meat dishes. The next day the son of his hostess said to him: "Mr. W., I am very glad that you touched no meat last night. My mother was watching you and if you had eaten meat, she would have lost all respect for you." Weak-kneed Catholic men sometimes think they can win favor by concealing their religion. Even the world respects the man who is faithful to principle. E'en as the Catacomb Conquered Imperial Rome; Even as Henry Came to Canossa; And 'neath Venetian sky To Alexander nigh Knelt in submission The great Barbarossa; Even as Bismarck fell Naught can be surer Than thy surrendering, Fatuous Fuehrer. —Rev. M. C. Burke. America, come to the school hall tomorrow and see these people who are to be representing EUropan Slovenes who are of the same flesh and blood that we are. Feel the close tie between Bob, an American born Slovene, and the boVs and girls born in Europe. It might bring your hearts closer to the real Slovene spirit and closer to the hearts of the Slovene youth in Europe. Come and see Bob, see Sambo, the chauffeur, see Stefi, see Zofka, see Tone and don't forget, too, Lira's "Mari," tomorrow night at 7:30 at the auditorium of the St. Vitus school. You'll laugh to your heart's content. I must not forget the dance. There will be dancing after the play. The music will be furnished by Jackie Zorc. Get your tickets from the Lira-ites See you tomorrow at the school. —The Ringer of Chimes. It's a honey of a play. Everyone who will be lucky enough to see it will certainly enjoy it. There are no fine symphonic passages produced by the magic of an orchestra leader, but there is a great deal of comedy, romance and twelve good tunes to whistle and hum as you go home. These many assets are topped by a good story, splendid acting by the cast and the fine direction of Frank Kuret, who has a special way of getting the cast to perform to the best of their ability, all of which makes this hit of hits one of the outstanding entertainments of the past few years in the history of the Slovene Catholic Singing Society "Lira." The play moves quickly, stopping only long enough now and then for a musical number. SCSS "Lira" has spared nothing to make "Mari*' a notable play. However, there is enough good, clean fun in Lira's new presentation and .plenty of bang-up slapstick to place it in the list of successful comedies. A splendid cast moves humorously and swiftly through the paces set by the Director. Josephine Hrastar will certainly do her part to prove that she is a top-notch comedienne and she certainly plays her role like a pro. Anthony Vidmar, as the chauffeur for the rich American Slovene, will be excellent throughout the play. Misses Frances Vidmar and Frances Brar.-celj, two jealous sisters, might be successful if their plan works but what about their younger sister Marica? Messrs. John Cerar, Frank Doles, Stanley Bizjak and John Za-laznik, and others players, add their sharp to the eeneral hilaritv. MY TRIP TO THE MEDITERRANEAN by DORIS MARIE BIRTIC (Continuation.) The following day found us walking among the glorious ruins of ancient Greece! Our steamer docked at Pireaus and waiting automobiles hurried us over to "violet-crowned'' Athens. This so-called "Eye of Greece" is composed of ancient and modern sections. Driving through the modern par:., I was sorely disappointed. I had always imagined the Greeks as bsins tall and handsome in gay peasant garb. — They were tall, handsome, dark and fair, but they dressed iust as we do. The only sign of a national costume was on the numerous dolls they had for sale as souvenirs; the only person that looked any bit odd was a sponge seller who had a load of these handy, many-purpose skeletons for sale, and he might have been just a peddler in our streets for all that matter. My disappointment, however, disappeared like a flash when I saw the far-famed Acropolis. I had iead abcut it in stories, and in history bcoks, but never had I imagined it to be such an impressive sight. The precise white marble columns rising gracefully amid fallen blocks of stone overwhelmed me. The air seemed to be filled with a reverential silence which speech itself seemed to dese- "we climbed up to the Panthenon, which is near the center of this temple district. When I looked at its exquisitely proportioned pillars which have stood the test of centuries, it seemed to me that our efforts to reproduce the columns of the Greek architect are indeed rather futile. Among other ruins we saw the Porch of the Maidens; the Propyaea, great entrance hall, the Odeum of Herod Atticus, Temple of the Winds, and the Theater of Dionysus at the base. In the latter we got a thrill sitting in the same stone chairs in which the ancient Greeks of renown had sat. The names were all carved on the bottom panel so that no errors in seating could be made. We visited the Museum before we left and saw some cf the most perfect creations in sculpture the world has ever known. No wonder Athens is known as the Mother City of Art. The statues were so beautifully carved that they seemed to possess a supernatural element—something human and something divine. My only regret was that I hadn't had enough education in art to really appreciate their true beauty. An interesting experience which was peculiar to Greece alone was the ability with which a group of professional photographers took pictures of us When first we had stopped by the base of the Acropolis, we were greeted by a host of camera men who quickly snapped pictures of us. It was such a novelty, that when they appeared five minutes later with the developments, they sold readily at ten cents apiece. We seemed to be good prospects so thy followed us from temple to temple, taking shots at random of our party just as though we were celebrities. ' After awhile it became tiresome, but still, we shall always remember the Grecian photographers for they made us feel important. (To be continued.) -0- WHAT IS A BOY? A boy is a man minus pride, pretense, greed and about 110 lbs. When he grows up, he will trade romance, energy, bashfulness, warts and a snag-proof stomach for the other possessions. But, then the boy is usually getting the worst of it in some trade or another. The world is so full of boys that it is impossible to touch a. fire-cracker, strike up a band or pitch a Dasc-ball game without collecting about a thousand of them. Boys are not ornamental, but they are useful. If it were not for the boys, the newspapers of this country would go undelivered and unread and a thousand circus elephants die of thirst. Beys are not popular except with their parents, but they have many fine points. One of them is their trustworthiness. You can absolutely rely on a boy, if you know what to rely on. Trust him tc get into some kind of mischief every day and he will not fail you, for instance: Boys are abstemious, eating only when awake. They are also very durable. A boy, if not washed too often and kept in a cool place for a while after each accident, will survive broken bones, hornets, swimming holes, massacres and nine helpin's of pies at one sitting.—H. M.
