Built a 3-functional center; send Slovenia the bill by STANE KUHAR In the 8. March edition of “Nai Tednik” (Our Weekly) a newspaper published by and for the Slovenian minority in the southernmost federal province of Carinthia Austria, the lead story was the announcement of the groundbreaking of a new “cultural center” being built in the city of Pliberk. The targeted opening date is September, 1998. The estimated cost is (U.S.) $3 million. One of the commentaries was by a municipal council- man Jurij Mandl who says, “To think of a cultural center in Pliberk is an old story; for more than 20 years we have spoken about this idea, but without any concrete conclusion. This is why for some, this project was an illusion.” Of importance is that the cultural center for Pliberk is the vision to have the structure serve not only as a place whereby plays or concerts could be held, but also where sports and other activities could be featured. In this manner, many generations will be able to use the facility. In addition, other avenues will be used to have the center become self-sufficient. Translation: most likely a restaurant. The financing arrangement to fund the center is unique for a Slovenian community living outside the Republic of Slovenia. The municipality of Pliberk will be responsible for a minimum of one-third the cost. Another third will be funded by either the provincial or federal government and the remaining third by the Republic of Slovenia. That’s right. One million big bucks by Stric Jože, the American version of Uncle Sam. Approximately $1 million US dollars will be provided by the government of the Republic of Slovenia. The story did not indicate nor provide any factual material as to what, if any, conditions would exist in return for the financial support by Slovenia. This is the second reported funding, although much larger in amount and scope, than the previous funding by Stric Jože to another cultural center in Carinthia, that being the “k & k center in št. Janz by Rožu.” The amount and financial arrangement by the Slovenian government for other communities, is, however, and in particular the USA, virtually nil. Through the many visiting government or nongovernment Slovenian officials to the United States and elsewhere, we have repeatedly been told that financial support for the smallest of needs is not available. The decision by the Slovenian government to provide this type and amount of financial support should be an indication to us in the U.S. and elsewhere, that we are not very important and irrelevant in the long-term scheme of things by the Republic of Slovenia. In more blunt terms, the Republic of Slovenia is telling us to kiss off. One cannot fault the Slovenians living in Carinthia for lobbying the Slovenian government to either put-up or shut-up for their particular needs. Proximity of borders and historical ties of Carinthia to Slovenia for 1,250 years dictate why funding here makes sense. But we in the USA should not deceive ourselves that we are important to the Slovenian government. The lack of creative and realistic approaches plus a dismal ar- (Continued on page 4) Churches /#» & event a One of Slovenia’s special features is its 2,850 churches, thousands of wayside shrines and crucifixes. Debevec Attended the 70^ surprise birthday party of Hon-orary-Slovenian and American Home subscriber Ed______ Kirchner last Saturday evening at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Eastlake, Ohio. It was given by his daughter, Karen, and son, Ed Jr., of Atlanta, and attended by almost 100 friends. The “Oh-Ja” club was represented by Ed March and Ed Harbie and their beautiful wives along with Mr. and Mrs. John Copic owners of John’s Fun House on E. 185 St. The “Oh Ja” club members are well-known for their good-times and bringing extravagant good humor to their events. Well, Saturday was no exception as the two Ed’s dressed up in one of Copic’s two-humped camel costumes. They paraded around the dance floor to the tunes of “The Sheik of Arabia” much to the delight of Kirchner and his friends. Kirchner spent the Second World War in the Navy, and to this day, he has a love for the water-related sport of fishing. Congratulations! By the way, Ed March was one of the original members of the United Slovenian Society Brass Band, while Ed Harbie joined a short time later. They and other talented musicians spent 15 years of volunteer service with the band making beautiful music and raising funds. We all lamented the huge turnover of musical talent of the new concert band and its meager playing schedule. During its heyday, it was one of the best Slovenian bands in the country. * I was watching my favorite television program a few weeks ago, “Travels in Europe” with Rick Steves. It was during one of the public television’s commercial episodes seeking money for themselves. Anyhow, they showed four different Rick Steves travel adventures that Thursday night. In between times, Steves answered travel questions called in by viewers who gave a donation. To my astonishment, one of the questions was, “Do you plan to piade a travel episode about Slovenia?” Steves seemed to know something about Slovenia and talked about it a little and indicated he might be interested in going there some day. Now the question of the week is: “Who was the person who called in the question about Slovenia?” If one of our beautiful readers knows who called in the question, give me a ring. Then we’ll let our readers know who the caller is. * I’d like to have a serious talk with a few of the scientists who claim we’re in the midst of a “Global Warming.” Here in Cleveland we’ve been in the midst of a “Global Deep-Freeze” since Nov. 12 when I shook hands with Joe Baškovič and Gov. George Voinovich during the lOO1*1 birthday celebration for former Senator Frank Lausche in St. Vitus auditorium. Those of us who drive, had to go through <= rough icy-covered highways to get to St. Vitus. Tony Grdina, coming from the West Side spun around a couple of times coming off the inner-belt. Anyhow, it’s been nothing but ice and snow ever since. Not only here, but the people, in Florida have complained it’s been one of the worst winters in recent history. If there’s global warming, it must be on some other globe! * Heard Mario’s “International Program” last Saturday (12 noon to 1 p.m. on WATJ 1560 AM). It was wonderful to listen to some beautiful music for a change. You can dance along, or sing, or just enjoy the wonderful music he plays. He salutes the Irish, Italians, plays German marches, Viennese waltzes, Greek songs, etc., and he’ll even throw in some Slovenian music. Mario’s International Hour should be expanded. His expert knowledge about world-wide history comes through in his brief introduction to the various beautiful melodies he plays. DO YOU KNOW THE SMARTEST WAYS TO GIVE TO YOUR FAVORITE CHARITIES? Since 1894, when the U.S. Congress imposed the Federal Income Tax, thus enabling the government to have money for our “well- being”, this compulsory contribution of a portion of our “wealth” has been with us. Thus the saying, “tbs only sure things in life are death and taxes”. In 1895, the U.S. Supreme Court declared the Federal income tax unconstitutional followed by the 16th amendment which gave Congress the powe* to enact laws and collect taxes. The question is: Was any incoffl® tax paid between the time that the U.S. Supreme Court declared the unconstitutionality of the tax and the adoption of the 16tb Amendment? Also, what was the saying about death and taxes before 1894? Such acts of personal responsibility were later overblown by the communist regime trying to put the blame on the Domobranci as an institution. Most of such alleged acts, however, were committed by illegal groups with the excuse of the so-called national self-preservation. Hatred? For me, personally, it would be the same as against the Nazis. Because the people of my own kin suffered - and died - at the hands of Nazis and Partisans. One - on my father’ side, Stefan Breznik, perished in the infamous Gestapo prison Moabit in Berlin. Just for being a stout Slovenian in Carinthia. The other - on my mother’s side Alojz Košir, vanished while passing through Partisan territory. What I feel is not hatred. Never could a self-conscious Domobranec fall so low. What still remains in these days is In Utter Contempt? For both the Nazis and Slovenian Communist Partisans alike. And for their sycophants. I am anxiously awaiting the day when the Slovenian nation would dare to adopt “Just say no” to the at present institutionalized hatred which seeks the character assassination of the Domobranci. Closing Words I would like to finish this letter with the words of American Japanese Ayako Doi who in April, 1995 wrote to the Washington Post: “As this year opened, Japan’s foreign policy planners talked of using the 50th anniversary of the end of the World War as a time to face up to the country’s loathsome past and get behind it once and for all. This was supposed to be a future oriented year that would launch Japan into its coveted new world leadership roll...” But the former Japanese Prime Minister Nakasone was against any act of atonement... “Japan did nothing so atrocious as killing the Jews in the name of the nation,” the 77-year-old ex-Navy officer asserted. “In a war it is natural that soldiers die and people suffer.” Others argue even more darkly that the record of Japanese atrocities in China, the Philippines and elsewhere was fabricated by the Allies to put the Japanese down. But Ayako Doi knows that those atrocities did occur and says: How can I as Japanese walk out of my home with my head held up after the morning paper presents me with this blown-up photo of an Imperial soldier raising his samurai sword to behead a starving Allied prisoner. Well, I just wonder what is the mood of any Slovenian American in his home with the vision of a Slovenski Domobranec blue with bruises waiting for a shot in the neck by a Slovenian Partisan at a gaping - Slovenian sinkhole? For our own communities, be they in northeast Ohio, elsewhere in the United States, or in Canada, the article and event in Pliberk is a mirror for ourselves to have a realistic dialogue on how and what would be discussed and eventually implemented if our communities will exist in whatever form in the future. Or simply cease to exist. To date we really do not have a clear vision to address the changing demographics and structures that may have, however we wish to ignore reality, outlived their reason to exist or meet the changing needs in our respective communities. For example, we have many fine national homes in northeast Ohio that serve a wide and diverse population base. But albeit one that is aging and one that no longer serves a close and cohesive neighborhood population. The population base has shifted to the suburban circles in northeast Ohio. Besides the financial resources needed to main- tain these structures the human resources are limited and normally at a price paid by people who are already active in numerous other organizations. They are also by design in another generational time and setting limited to specific activities and not adaptable to more family oriented activities. Not one of the national halls is suitable on a continuous basis for young adults with children for a host of sports related activities. And these young adults and their children are by default the future. Losing this next generation would only exacerbate a process of decline. Or eventual demise if change does not occur. Despite the claim as the largest concentration of American Slovenians in the United States, it is inexcusable and intolerable that we lack even a rudimentary site or settling with decent archives or other related materials, including personal computers, to serve the general public to provide the transmission of Slovenian history and culture, as it is and was in Europe, as well as our own history that has reached more than 125 years as permanent communities in America. While our northeast Ohio communities are in a period of transition, the good news is that we have always been able to have the energy and creativity to 1996 MERCURY MYSTIQUE StL#1179 48 MONTHS _____________ZERO DOWN 48 mo cWJ rnd Wnt. Yet, the weather experts, some even gleefully told us that we would have a White Easter. Bad guess. Oh yes; it was cold but otherwise it was a glorious, sunny day. That is as it should be for Easter. Hope all of you enjoyed the Holy Day. In my 12 years as a member of the St. Clair Pensioners Club, we have never had to cancel a meeting due to bad weather. But then came Thursday, March 21. From the wee hours of the morning, the radio and TV news was full of announcements of school closings, meetings canceled, bad roads, ice, snow, road accidents, etc. What should we do? That was the question. A quick decision was made. In the interest and concern for the members, CANCEL THE MEETING decision was made. With a few volunteers manning the phones, the members were notified of the cancellation and rescheduled the meeting for the following week. It was a job well done. I am happy to report the attendance at the make-up meeting was very good. Due to the weather, the showing of the Great Lakes Expo slides was also canceled, and will be rescheduled for another time. March was not a good month for us in another way. After a long illness, we received the news of the death of our member Irene Rie-man on March 14. This was followed by the death of a long-time member Julia Kamber on March 22, just a month after she had celebrated her lOOth birthday. We extend our sympathies to their families. May both Irene and Julia rest in peace. A few of our members who no longer live in the Cleveland area, still continue their membership. We keep in touch, and occasionally I receive a letter or note from one of them. Recently member Frances Cerar now living in Danvers, Massachusetts with her daughter, writes, “New England, just like Cleveland, has had a very bitter, snowy winter. But we did survive.” Due to her grandson’s coming wedding, she will not be able to come to our dinner. She sends a “Happy Easter” to all and says stay healthy and enjoy the Spring and Summer. She states that she enjoys reading my column in the American Home newspaper saying, “Although I cannot participate, I love reading about the members and events that take place.” Frances, thank you for your comments. They are appreciated, and I would like to think that editor James Debevec welcomes such articles for publication for others to read. I do not know at this time how many have signed up for the tour to Windsor, Canada. If you are planning on going, be sure to call Frances Karnak, or see her at our coming meeting on Thursday, April 18. It is hoped that those who were reported on our sick list last month are making good progress in their recovery, and that they will soon be able to venture out. Added to that list is Anne Filipič, who had a slight heart problem. She was hospitalized, and hopefully is back home by now. You can send your cards to her home address. My first question, however, was, “How’s my dog, ‘Tasha?” “She’s happy and content with my cats,” states Mark. Got Mark settled in the motel then off again to visit with Aunt Wilma (Guzell). Wilma and Mark are very found of each other. Wilma made a huge pot of old-fashioned chili for supper, homemade wheat bread and fresh strawberries which was perfect. Land of sunshine and try to get a fruit salad in any restaurant! Florida is a beef cattle state and they tend to push steaks, which we rarely eat anymore. Long past dinner we talked about the Guzell and Resnik families from PA. Uncle Len, for the umpteenth time, told his WWII stories. Reg says Uncle Len must have been in every European campaign there was. We said our goodnights and promised we’d see them next baseball season, 1997; God willing. Tuesday, March 12 At last Winter Haven, FL and long-awaited sunshine - warm sunshine. The guys were elated. We quickly settled at our hotel near the Chain-of-Lake Indians’ stadium. Almost game time, too. Like two buddies, Reg and our son walked to their first game. I retired to the pool manned with pen, paper and a book of short stories. At last the sun was warm and inviting. We were set for a week of baseball and leisurely outings. Winter Haven’s claim to fame is baseball and a few great restaurants. For me, a non-baseball fan, my job is in seeing father and son enjoying each other’s company. These two, Reg and Mark, are a special piece of my family pie. Their happiness is like a hug and a kiss in the Florida sunshine. Addendum: — After the ball game on Wednesday, March 13, the phone rang in our room. Who could it be? Judge Norman Fuerst’s voice greeted me on the line and invited Reg and me to share drinks with him and his gracious wife, Mary, in the barroom. Okoli druge ure so prispeli v Willoughby Hills, kjer so prespali v motelu Fairfield Inn. Karl Bonutti in jim voščil dobrodošlico. Oblikovala sta seznam in ga poslala Igorju Bavčarju in dr. 14) KANADSKI SLOVENSKI KONGRES — Občni zbor — TORONTO, Ont. — Kanadski Slovenski Kongres (KSK) bo imel v soboto, 20. aprila, ob 2h popoldne, v Starostnem domu LIPA, 52 Neilson Drive, Etobicoke-Toronto, svoj sedmi (7.) redni občni zbor. Fojbe in pokoli v Istri, Dalmaciji in Trstu Zgodovina in resnica - le enosmerna? Pokoli so žal bili. Veliko ljudi je bilo usmrčenih. Nekateri izmed njih niso imeli nikake zveze z vojno in njenimi neusmiljenimi zakoni. Zdaj imamo v Ottawi veleposlaništvo Republike Slovenije, kjer nas vedno vljudno sprejme veleposlanikov svetnik Mitja Štrukelj. Včasih nas pozdravi prijazni nasmeh veleposlanika Marjana Majcna. To sta dr. S. Pregel in dr. A. Stukel. Dragoceno misijonsko so-delovanje. (O. V. Kos, SJ, Tokio) Nadaljujmo njegovo razmišljanje — on jih imenuje eseje —, delno že obljavljenim v MSIP 1074, 1085 in 1086. Dolga zgodovina Cerkve pozna življenja, ki EVEN THE NBA CAN'T GIVE YOU THIS MANY THRILLS FOR 4 QUARTERS All it takes to win Super Lotto is luck! V konkretnem svetu so namreč z misijonarji neločljivo povezani misijonski so-delavci in sodelavke.« (Bo še) Vsi, ki to razmišljate, ste poklicani postati misijonski pionirji zaledja.
