The Blessing of Children
TRIESTE, ITALY - It was a very happy occasion for the parish of Barkoljc, on Sunday, January 26lh at the 11 a.m. Mass when some 50 children from the F. S. Finžgar primary school and other toddlers were brought to church by their parents. Tite special occasion was the blessing of children.
This feast was inaugurated last year by our more recently appointed Slovenian priest, Fr. Rafko Ropret (Fr. Ralph Roberts formerly from St. Christine’s parish in Euclid, Ohio). During the celebration of the Mass each child approaches the altar while the priest prays: “May the Lord Jesus bless
and watch over you.” At the same time he makes the sign of the cross on the forehead and then presents the child with a little gift. This year it was a small chocolate bar with a holy picture attached. Last year it was a lollipop with a medal.
We are grateful to Fr. Rafko for the patience he shows to our children especially when they are restless at Mass. He just gives them a pleasant smile to calm them down. After all, Jesus said: “Let the children come to me and do not stop them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” (Lk. 18:16). --Catholic Monthly Slovenian newspaper

2003 Easter Message

While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you. ” Lk. 24:36
“Peace be with you.” This Easter, unlike anytime in recent memory, we long to hear the voice of our Risen Savior assuring us of the gift of His peace. Like the first disciples in the upper room, we may have been hovering this Lent amidst the violence of war, the threat of terrorism, the sputtering economy, and an incurable disease.
Our anxious minds are locked behind doors of fear. Our weary souls peer out from the darkness of doubt searching for the Light of Christ. Our sin-sick hearts yearn for the healing balm of forgiveness, and our daily insecurities scan the horizon for new life and true peace. Jesus says to us again, “Peace be with you.”
While this peace we seek and pray for this Easter is clearly a gift, it is also a work. Something is indeed demanded of those who seek peace. And we know that peace abandons those who do not ensure its welcome. You will recall Pope Paul VTs often-quoted injunction, “If you want peace, work for justice.” The work required of those who hope to possess the gift of Christ’s peace is 'doing justice' txnd 'living in self-sacrificing love' as Jesus did. This work involves the cross of Christ that we hailed this holy week as the tree of life.
Many of you know this work that leads to peace; the loss and the sacrifice of Christ’s selfless cross. Many have suffered for the love of others, sacrificed for the sake of those you love and those who have loved you. And certainly those obediently serve and defend their country and their families are intensely experiencing this call to Christ-like self-donation at this time. Whether it is doing the right thing for your children, caring responsibly for your aging parents, ministering in your parish churches, working for a better society, forgiving those who offend you - in all these ways the Spirit molds human hearts into dwelling places for Christ’s gift of peace.
In the same way, violence, hatred, and selfishness make hardened hearts that reject the gift of peace. We cannot be at war within ourselves, judgmental and exclusive in our family affairs, prejudice and suspicious in our neighborhoods and politics, deceitful and manipulative in the marketplace and all the while claim to be for peace, to be at peace, or to be peace-loving. We may recognize the absence of peace and long for it, even pray for it, but until and unless we permit the Spirit to conform our lives to God’s love and justice -peace will evade us.
Through the intercession of Mary, the Queen of Peace, may we make a way for peace by bringing an end to violence, war, hatred and conflict in our own hearts and homes and extending to the ends of the earth. May Christ’s Easter gift of peace reign in all of us. Blessed and peace-filled Easter to All!

From Tomsic, a startling range

BOSTON, MA - “This woman is a miracle,” exclaimed a distinguished musician at the close of Do-bravka Tomsic’s recital Sunday afternoon, (April 6) at Symphony Hall.
One can only agree, though there is nothing miraculous about the decades of unremitting hard work that lie behind Tomsic’s “effortless” playing.
In her sixth recital for the FleetBoston Celebrity Series, Tomsic opened with two works new to her repertoire, Haydn’s Sonata No. 60 in C Major and Beethoven’s Sonata, Op. 109. She played Haydn with the precise and sparkling finger work one would expect, and a startlingly wide emotional range. We know that Tomsic is a great Beethoven pianist, from recordings, recitals, and performances of two concertos with the Boston Symphony (she opens the BBO’s next season with Beethoven). Op. 109 didn’t sound as fully inhabited as pieces she has been playing for decades -but one rarely hears this
piece accurately played, and her performance was full of freshly observed detail.
After intermission, Tomsic was on home ground with Chopin. She offered a majestic yet personal performance of the F-Minor Fantasy, a luminous “Berceuse,” and eight Etudes delivered on a transcendental, golden-age level.
A tumultuous ovation followed, and Tomsic offered five encores - including a Bach-Siloti prelude that gave us a glimpse of something eternal.

She will be back this summer, at Tanglewood, our summer concert site, in the Berk-shires in the western part of MA.

Don’t look now, but Ray is back and so I’ll open with a joke first before 1 lose my readers. Seen a sign recently that read: “Whenever 1 see a church, I stop in for a visit so that when they carry me in God won’t say, “Who is it?”
Maybe you heard this one but then maybe it is worthwhile repeating. A woman died and went to heaven. Three years later her husband died. When he arrived in heaven, his wife couldn’t wait to show him around, pointing out what a beautiful place it is. “Yes, it certainly is,” said her husband, “And if it hadn’t been for that blasted fiber diet of yours, I could have been enjoying this years ago.”
Well, let’s get back to Fort Dix. From my last column, you know that my buddies are anxiously waiting to find that Italian restaurant on the highway to Atlantic City. Well, came Saturday when roll call was over and the head den mother inspected our barracks to insure all uniforms were hung “dress right, dress” we skipped eating at the mess hall for let’s face it, they could not make a spaghetti dinner if they stayed up all night. The only dish they were good at was making “S.O.S.” which is known in the American language as creamed chipped beef over day-old toast, which is among Rudy Flis’ favorites.
Sfc. Piglowski or “Ski” as we called him for those Polish names were hard to pronounce at times, along with Joe Andrews and myself and down the highway we went. It was a good 45 minute ride and there in the middle of nowhere at the crossroads, setting off in a distance was “Red Lion Inn,” in the town called Vincetown which I doubt if it had over two dozen folks living there. It was farm country and this place was one of those old, old farm houses turned into a restaurant.
We knew they had Italian spaghetti for they had a big sign out by the highway saying they served the best Italian food in New Jersey. We found out they were telling the gospel truth. When you walk in the front door of the farm house, you enter the so-called what was once the living room of the house and it was a bar room with full bar privileges.
Fortunately, we were all over 21 but none of us were what you would call boozers for we settled for a cold beer now and then at the barrack’s snack bar. I glanced into the next room which was a huge dining room or I
should say perhaps huge dining tables and the place was spotless and every table was taken except the comer table. Yippie, guys we are in luck for they may have expected us.
Well we parked our butts and could hardly wait to order and dig in. We waited and waited and still the one good looking Italian girl never came to our table. Finally Joe yells over, “Hey, we are here; we have bed check at 10 p.m., can you take care of us?” She came over and said I am sorry but ,we are short of help, for my sister who also helps waiting on tables is out and having her baby. Why don’t you soldiers go into the bar room for a drink and perhaps in a little while things will slow down in the dining room.
Okay. That sounds like a good idea although I don’t like to drink on an empty tummie, and drank my draft beer slowly but then maybe I should have asked for a straw. People were leaving but by the same token new ones were coming in and fortunately our only waitress put a sign on the comer table saying reserved (for us). Finally, we go back into the dining room and I said to her, “One thing you can use is more help.” Right, she says and where can I get it? I Suggested to Ski and Joe that maybe if we had any hopes of eating, we should help her. Yeah, said Joe; it looks like that is the only way we may get to eat before the moon comes up.
Well, we went to the washroom, took off our Class A khaki shirts and ties and fortunately, we all had clean white tee shirts on and so we did not appear like we just walked in from an episode of “MASH.” We started clearing tables as soon as one emptied and in going into the kitchen we soon got to meet the rest of the family. It seemed that grandma
and grandpa were doing the cooking, and the waitresses’ parents were filling the or-, ders and putting them on the take-out table for the waitresses to pick up and take out to the dining room. Neither of us ever did that kind of work, but we fell right into it. The young Italian girl smiled and said, “Jesus, Mary and Joseph, he must have heard my prayers and sent me help.” We were clearing tables, taking food out after she explained to us how the tables were numbered to determine what orders went to what tables. For awhile it seems like there was no let up and Andrews, the wise cracker said, “Well if nothing else, this is working up an appetite.” After
about an hour-and-a-half things let up a little bit and she says, “Fellas, why don’t you sit down and let me serve you now.” Those were the words we were waiting for, the Long Awaited Supper was about to be served.
She did not ask what we wanted or even give us the menu but she brought out three dishes and they had a little bit of everything on them. You name it, if it was an Italian dish, it was on the plate. I thought I had died and that this was to be my last supper.
She even went into the bar room and got us more beers but I declined and said I had to drive and take these bozos back to camp. So 1 said, “Vivian, how much is the damage; how much do we owe you?” She said you gotta be kidding. How much do I owe you guys for handling the dining room with me for God only knows 1 was making no headway by myself. She insisted, “N° Money”, but before we left I felt we had no right to ftee meals so we each left five bucks on the table.
As we went out, she says I hope and pray you guys can come back next Friday or Saturday for those are our two biggest nights. “Have no fear,” Joe said, “If the sergeant don’t give us weekend details, we will be back pr0' viding Mlakar don’t get stuck with guard duty °r change of quarters for he is the guy with the car.”
What can I say, except to say that over the months that followed, at least three weeks out of four we were at the Red Lion Inn taking care of the dining room and then eating like there was no tomorrow. Perhaps my greatest wish would have been that Frank Serratore could have been alive to join us so he could see what real Italia11 spaghetti and meatball5 looks and tastes like without liver and onions on the side-It goes without saying that any of us could have had a full time job there anyti1116 we wanted. In fact some' times when we would be late in getting there, Vivia11 would say, “The customer5 have been asking, ‘Whej-6 are the solders who general y handle the dining rooim They always give us ta service.’” Since the mea s were always on them, an^ tips we got and there ^ere quite a few, we al^3^ turned over to Vivian.

Wednesday, Oct. 23, 1946
1 slept maybe 3 hours. We got up at 7 a.m. At 8 a.m., we helped Joze Rupert, Silva and Milan get a ride to Celovec in a vehicle provided by UNRRA. The trains are not running because there is no coal.
We reviewed our wedding presents: 2 meters of silk and a 60-watt light bulb from Franc Demšar, 100 Shillings from the Hoja’s and 100 Shillings from Rupert.
We hoped our wedding pictures would be ready, but the photographer wasn’t able to develop and print them because there was no electricity.
Friday, Oct. 25, 1946
1 have resumed my unpaid duties arranging for employment for our refugees. Our workers at Schmelz (a military artillery range) are continuing to have Problems. We never know when the Schmelz truck will arrive to take them there. Sometimes it comes at 9 a-rn., sometimes 10 or noon, °r it doesn’t come at all. And the workers say that, when they work there, they don’t get enough food.
Our workers at Schmelz complain that I haven’t tried hard enough to get them extra ration cards. I visited the Austrian work office to get

extra rations for our men, but the work office showed me a report from a Schmelz foreman stating that our workers are unreliable and do not deserve extra rations. I talked to our men and some of them admitted that they don’t work hard and they only care about the bundle of firewood which they are allowed to bring back to the camp for their own use or for sale. But it’s not their fault if their transportation is late and unreliable.
The temperature dropped to 20°F last night. We will need firewood to stay warm.
Saturday, Oct. 26, 1946
We heard a rumor that the refugee camp at Lienz was closed and that the people were forced to leave. Will they close our camp, too? Where will we get food and housing? (Later we learned that the rumor was false.)
Sunday, Oct. 27, 1946
This morning 1 wrote 6 letters, including letters to my mother and my brother Vlado to tell them about the wedding.
Mire is in a bad mood. He doesn’t like anything cooked by my sister Mici. For the wedding, he gave us about 250 Shillings worth of meat and didn’t ask for payment. But he also owed Cilka about 250 Shillings, and Cilka hasn’t asked him to repay that. Mici complained to me that Mire is always bothering her. He overheard

Even though we are now down to about 11 people in our room (we started with 22), it’s difficult having so many people living in one room for so long under these conditions. (Our room is about 18 feet on each side.) Tuesday, Oct. 29, 1946 I attended a meeting at UNRRA from 2:30 to 6 p.m. regarding the new labor office. Some of our refugees from Ljubljana (Slovenia’s capitol city) have split into two groups competing for control of the camp. I think they’re all corrupt and immoral. I want to quit my unpaid duties on the camp board and go work as a logger. At least there I will get some pay - and some peace.

Cilka took her wedding ring back to the watchmaker to exchange for a smaller one.
Wednesday, Oct. 30,1946 Mire is angry and arguing with everyone. He doesn’t want to eat with the rest of us.
Thursday, Oct. 30,1946 I walked to Fohnsdorf (about 3 miles away) and sold 66 Shillings worth of lace we had made. On the way back, a wet snow made me soaking wet and cold.

The April 2nd meeting ol the Slovenian Pensioners Club of Euclid, Ohio was a colorful prelude to the coming of spring and the Easter holiday. Some of the ladies really outdid themselves, wearing a complete spring outfit from head to toe, including high heels, fur wraps, and even a parasol. An Easter Parade followed the meeting with a procession through the hall and on stage, to the delight of the members.
With the weather warming up and daylight savings time, we will be looking for some getaways, and tour director Mimi Stibil has several fun trips planned. A bus trip on May 12th to Greek-town cost $25.00, with a $20.00 bonus and $5.00 food voucher: net cost - $0.00. There is also a trip to the Riverside Theater near Erie, Pennsylvania on July 22nd, with dinner and show entitled, “Over the River and Through the Woods” - a takeoff on the “Everybody Loves Raymond” show. This trip costs $50.00 and includes a stop at the Blair Outlet Store. Lastly, there is a trip to Seneca, New York on August 18th, which is on the “states” side of Niagara Falls. Make your plans now and enjoy some summer fun.
Remember to support the Ladies Auxiliary of Recher Slovenian Home who are hosting one of their delicious pork chop dinners on Monday, April 28‘h from 4 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $8.00 which includes two breaded pork
chops with all the trimmings.
The following members were on the sick list in March: Mary Stefančič, Ann
Otoničar, Jean Zupančič, Barbara Tiskur, Tom Telis-man, Louis Hosta, Ann Kozelevar, Kay Kochevar and Ann Parker. We hope they are feeling better and back in the swing of things. We are sorry to report that Josephine J. Cerjan passed away on March 21s'. Our sincere condolences.
April showers bring May flowers, and we are looking forward to honoring our mothers at the May 7th meeting.
It is certainly a pleasure to listen to polkas and waltzes after the meeting, and we hope our accordion musicians will continue to entertain us.

The April, May and June meetings of the Newburgh -Maple Heights Pensioners Club will be held at the Slovenian National Home, 3563 East 80th off Union Avenue. They all begin at 12 noon.

You made me so proud that you sided with the Germans and the French who will gleefully spend their shekels, earned from sales of prohibited war materiel to Saddam, at your vacation spots and “gostilnas*. Does this action show how you would support the U.S. if you were to join NATO, and the U.S. was attacked? Have you forgotten that the U.S. was attacked on 911? Perhaps there will be revelations about illegal sales made by companies from Slovenia, while you were part of Yugoslavia, to ,r«q? But I, for one, would forgive you because at that time you *«re still just one of the republics of Yugoslavia and you were not free. Now YOU ARE FREE! Do you not wish to see other people Gain THEIR FREEDOM? Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, The Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Uzbekistan - they were all thankful for their newly gained freedoms. They stood up and were counted among the WILLING! They made gg proud. YOU missed the boat!

Spring Means Time for Zarja Concert
Spring is not far away as is the . Spring Concert to be presented by the Zarja Slovenian Singing Society. Zarja members have been practicing for the upcoming “Spring Frolic” that will be held on Saturday, April 26 at the Slovenian Society Home, 20713 Recher Avenue in Euclid, Ohio;
Music is an art form and it contains many things: images, suggestions, feelings and is part of our daily lives. It doesn’t save lives, but it makes life a little bit better. Without it our lives would be very different. Zarja members present Slovenian songs that provide a bridge from our forefathers to the audience, whether it be serious or comical. How many of us have had a twist of fate, that “Fickle finger of fate,” that changed our lives. This year’s skit, created by Ed Ozanich, is titled, “Oh, That Fickle Finger of Fate.” This story is about Nace, the village’s richest man who owns and operates the local gostilna. He loves to gamble, especially the game called poker. He has a daughter, Kara, of whom he is very overprotective. He has a lot of good luck winning from the men of the village until a stranger, a Dr. Victor Zauba arrives. Then things begin to
change. The skit is interspersed with specialty and chorus musical numbers, directed by Doug Elersich, accompanied by Jim Markel on the piano.

confusing. There were at one time five Frank Bartols living in Traunik, which made it a little rough on the postal department. On one occasion this repetitious pattern proved profitable. A young couple went to get their marriage license, and when the clerk learned that they were named Frank and Josephine, the bride’s parents were also Frank and Josephine, as were the groom’s, and that furthermore the groom had a sister who had married a man named Frank, he decided to let them have their license for free.
It was only natural that this boom would generate desire for a community more substantial and permanent than the lumber camps most of these families had started out in. Along the Soo Line Railroad tracks between Eban Junction and Trenary there were several lumber camps run mostly by Slovenians, and it was these logged-over lands along the railroad line that they began to buy up as the urge to settle down became really strong. One followed the other, and before long there was a definable community along the road from north to south and east to west. Wherever there was land for sale, houses sprang up, as well as bams, and other buildings; and at the crossroads a store was built by William Kehoe (who, incidentally, was not Slovenian). As a matter of
fact, the first settlers of the land that was later to become the main Slovenian community in Alger County were Dutch homesteaders named Nickel, part of a contingent that had settled in the Limestone area in the late 1880’s. Mr. Kehoe’s ownership of the store was short-lived, however, because John Knaus purchased it from him in the early 1920’s, and in 1925 Louis Mikulich moved with his family from Vail Spur, where he had run a similar store at Camp A and purchased the Traunik store from Knaus.
By 1927 there were enough permanent residents in the area to warrant a post office, and Mr. Mikulich applied for post office status for the community, submitting three possible names for it: Nickel, after the first family to live there; Buckeye, after the lumber company which had logged heavily in the area and built a huge farm there; and Traunik, the name of the village in Loski Potok, Slovenia, where Mr. Mikulich and many other area residents had been bom. Post office status was granted, and Traunik was the name selected by the postal department, much to the delight of the people, who now felt that they had almost literally transplanted part of the old country to the new.

Broccoli Bake	!
Sylvia Pisorn provides this recipe. It is an easy, layered , casserole that you can adjust ingredients and it still comes | out good. It’s one of those that they’ll ask, “Did anybody ! bring the broccoli casserole?” The kids really like it, and \ even non-broccoli eaters like it. And Sylvia would like it in \ the cookbook, because she has a hard time finding the ! original handwritten steno sheet she received 20 years ago.
Ingredients:
3 packages 16 oz. frozen broccoli	|
1 lb. shredded Cheddar cheese
1 C Hellmann’s mayonnaise
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1	medium onion, chopped
2	eggs
salt and pepper, to taste
'A lb. butter
1 package (small) Pepperidge Farm Herb Stuffing Directions:
Boil broccoli for 3 minutes per package directions. ! Spread over bottom of large, ungreased casserole dish. Grate , Cheddar cheese and spread over broccoli. In a medium sized , bowl, mix together mayonnaise, mushroom soup, eggs,! onion, salt and pepper. Pour carefully over broccoli and, cheese so as not to upset cheese. In a large pan, melt the i butter and mix with the stuffing mix. Sprinkle over the top of, the casserole. Bake for 30 minutes at 350°, uncovered.
Tips: We have also tried fresh broccoli, various left-over , cheeses, Miracle Whip (not everyone is a Heilman’s mayo, person), and even lightly browned the stuffing mix in the, pan before sprinkling on top. Since this makes a large recipe,,

Prehistoric Road Found in Dolenjsko
Slovenian archaeologists have been very busy over the past few years, working side by side with construction workers building highways across the country. They have come upon many finds, the major of these being a road built between the 7'h and 6th century, BC, which has parallels in the Etruscan roads of Central Italy.
The road at the Pozamice site in the Dolenjsko region dates back to the Early Iron Age and is situated between the villages of Dolenje Krenovo and Družinska vas. According to archaeologist Gojko Tica, head of excavation works at the site, this is the oldest built road so far discovered in Central Europe. Considering the way it was built, the only real parallel can be drawn with the roads built by the Etruscans in central Italy, Tica says.
The road, which has had 38 meters excavated, is three meters wide. It is built of stones of various shapes and sizes found locally by the builders. The sides are edged off by large stones set into the ground; they are up to one meter in diameter and are raised 20 centimeters above the level of the road. The area in between is filled with smaller stones 10 to 20 centimeters in diameter. Some large stones are partially worked, while the small ones, mainly gravel-stones, are simply laid together.
The road is intersected at three points by large stones placed perpendicularly. Just as the road’s edge, they are raised 20 centimeters above the level of the rest of the road. These features were probably built to prevent carts from sliding off the road, Gojko Tica believes. He says another interesting thing about the site is that iron ore has been found on a part of the road.
The prehistoric road runs in the direction of an Early Iron Age settlement and the accompanying burial ground of Vinji Vrh, so Tica believes that it has been used for ritual purposes and was related to a cult of the dead. He has found parallels for his hypothesis in Etruscan roads, which were related with a cult of the dead as well, and the renowned Vaše situla, a bronze vessel from the 6th century BC decorated with a procession of carts in its upper part found in the Village of Vaše, central Slovenia.
“There is a procession depicted on the Vaša situla, and then there is Pozamice road, which could have been used by the nobility of the time to follow a funeral procession of an aristocrat on a cart,” Tica says. He draws attention to the fact that the art of making situlas (from the Latin ‘bucket’ referring to an ancient decorated metal or pottery vessel shaped like a deep bucket, urn, or vase)
was taken over from the Etruscans as well and, that it is possible that the technique of road construction came to Slovenia along with it.
Archaeologists working on the Pozamice site have also come upon fragments of prehistoric ceramics and axes from the Late Stone Age. These findings have led them to believe that some prehistoric activities took place on the rise above the road. The pieces of ceramics and stone axes, probably ended up on the road through erosion, Tica believes.
During the latest excavation works, archaeologists have discovered six antique buildings dating from the period between the second half of the 2nd century and the 4lh century. The largest of them was built of stone, while the rest were probably made of wood and had only the foundation built of stone. The buildings were part of a Roman country estate, i.e. villa mstica. These antique remains also include a road, which, however, runs in a completely different direction than that of the prehistoric road.
The prehistoric road, which is partially destroyed today, had been damaged by ancient inhabitants who used the large stones as building material.____________________

Jerome Brentar Honored for Lifetime Aid to Immigrants
Over 200 guests honored Jerome A. Brentar with a banquet held on Sunday, b£b. 23, at the Croatian Lodge, Cardinal A. Stepinac, in Eastlake, Ohio. The guests consisted of Croatians and other nationalities.
This banquet marked 50-some years since over 1,000 refugees sponsored by Mr. Brentar arrived in the United States. Twenty-two of the attendees were once the small children without fathers whom he had helped. Mnrk G. Spiranovich, the spokesperson for the banquet, was one of them.
Jerome Brentar served the United States in World War B in the European theater. The then 24-year-old Ameri-can soldier was appalled '''hen he learned of the Bleiburg Tragedy and the death marches that destroyed a whole generation of young
Croatians.
The refugee camps in post War Europe were filled with tens of thousands of destitute Croatian refugees who fled communist Yugoslavia. They lived in constant fear deportation to certain death at the hands of brutal Jugoslav communists.
Mr. Brentar majored in s°cial service at Michigan State University but com-Pieted his last semester of studies at the Western Reserve University in Cleve-*and in order to assist in the ^settlement of the arriving . r°atians. During his stud-1®S> he became active in buritable organizations, Electing food, clothing, m°ney, etc., for the Euro-Pean refugees.

Jerome met his wife, Dora, in the refugee camp in Linz, Austria in 1949. They were married in Cleveland in 1952.
from communist tyranny. This is what motivated Jerome to assist Croatia’s Minister Andrija Artukovic; Ukrainian Ivan Damjanjuk; Polish Frank Walus; German scientist Arthur Rudolf; etc., against false communist charges.
The Ukrainian people never fulfilled their promise to reimburse Jerome for the million dollars in expenses he incurred while proving Damjanjuk’s innocence. Damjanjuk would not be with his family today if it wasn’t for Jerome. He would not doubt have been unjustly executed.
Mr. Brentar mortgaged his home, his business, and everything he owned to help Damjanjuk. He eventually lost his home and his beloved travel agency.
To this he remarked, “This has made me prouder of our Croatians. They do not forget.”
Mr. Brentar’s strong Croatian upbringing and his deeply religious beliefs made him what he is , a man with a heart of gold. He has worked closely with the Catholic Church his entire life.

voice to four choirs and the “Klapa Prijatelji” octet. He joined St. Paul Croatian Church Choir at the age of 8 and today is its oldest member.
Mark Spiranovich concluded the view of Jerome’s humanitarian accomplishments by quoting the well-known Croatian patriot Tomislav. Mesič, who wrote in the early 1950’s: “We have a man in America, by the name of Jerome, who has done miracles in helping the Croatian people and Croatia. If we had only five more like him, 1 believe that Croatia would soon be free of the Yugo-communists and would be reborn in true Christian fundamentals.

How Did We Survive Childhood?
Jerome, his parents, and four brothers at times, lived together in their home with a dozen or more refugees who slept in their beds or on army cots. The refugees ate with them until adequate housing was found.
Mr. Brentar found jobs and housing for all the newcomers and none ever became public charges.
At times he rode streetcars with his new friends or drove them to work until they were able to do so themselves. Frequently, Jerome worked with his newcomers until they learned their job. For some, this was the condition for being hired. The immigrants did not speak or understand English very well.
Jerome also helped many Germans, Hungarians, and others to reach their new homeland.
He was the volunteer social worker at St. Paul’s Croatian Parish on E. 40lh and St. Clair in Cleveland.
Mr. Brentar booked flights with the airlines or with steamship liners for
those who traveled to Cleveland on commercial carriers. This is how he got into the travel business. The then Lufthansa Airline district sales manager suggested that Jerome open his own travel agency as he was doing more business than most travel agents in Cleveland.
He opened Europa Travel in 1958 along with his children.
In 1970, Mr. Brentar built a Swiss chalet style building on E. 185th St., that has become a landmark in Cleveland. This building now houses the travel agency.
Jerome stands up for what he believes is right and just, especially when it comes to defending the down trodden
According to today’s regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids in the 1940s, 50s, 60s, 70s, or even the early 80s, probably should not have survived. Our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paint. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets. When we rode our bikes, we had no helmets. As children we rode in cars with no seat belts or air bags. Riding in the back of a pickup truck on a warm day was always a special treat.
We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle. We ate cupcakes, bread and butter, and drank soda pop with sugar in it, but we were never overweight because we were always outside playing. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle, and no one actually died from this.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then rode down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem. We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the street lights came on.
No one was able to reach us all day. No cell phones.
We did not have Playstations, Nintendo 64, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, video tape movies, surround sound, computers, or Internet chat rooms. We had friends. We went outside and found them.
We played dodge ball, and sometimes, the ball would really hurt. We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones and teeth, and there were no lawsuits from these accidents. They were
accidents. No one was to blame but us.
We had fights and punched each other and got black and blue and learned to get over it.
We rode bikes or walked to a friend’s home and knocked on the door, or rang the bell and talked to them.
Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn’t had to learn to deal with disappointment. Some students weren’t as smart as others, so they failed a grade and were held back to repeat the same grade. Tests were not adjusted for any reason.
Our actions were our own. Consequences were expected. The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law. Imagine that.

VALERIE M. BAZNIK
Valerie M. Baznik (nee Per), 74, a 49 year resident of Euclid, Ohio, passed away on Monday, April 14 at Euclid Hospital.
Valerie was bom July 8, 1928 in Cleveland.
She belonged to Court of Mary (Holy Cross), St. Clair Pensioners, Jolly Travelers, Waterloo	Pensioners,
Chrisseniors, KSKJ St. Vitus Lodge No. 25, St. Vitus Altar Society, and served as a volunteer at St. Joseph Christian Life Center. Valerie helped lead many trips to the yearly Bishop Baraga weekends, and to various educational and social places for the St. Clair Pensioners.
Valerie is survived by her husband, Anthony J.; daughters Margaret M. (Kurt) Hetz of Girard, PA, Barbara A. (George) Stevenson, and Elizabeth J. (Michael) Smith; grandchildren Brian, Timothy, Andrew, Emily, and Katherine; a sister - Sr. Margaret Mary Per S.N.D.; and a nephew Anthony Baznik.
A sister Jean Brodnik, and brother Stanley Per are deceased.
Valerie was employed for 25 years in the Advertising Department of the Plain Dealer. She retired in 1993.
Friends will be received on Monday, April 21 at Brickman & Sons Funeral Home, 21900 Euclid Avenue in Euclid, Ohio from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m.

I went to Camp Rucker in Alabama for basic training. We had a “PX” (post exchange) where we bought civilian stuff, like toothpaste, soap, shaving supplies; it was like a drug store.
We had a movie theater -all movies were first run, before the RKO Palace had them. We had a service club, where you could play ping-pong, enjoy music or just write letters home. All buildings were painted wood, stark plain, just as our barracks were. The infirmary was the same.
Every Sunday I went to Mass. Sometimes I served. Our chapel was also stark plain. At first it seemed like anything but a house of God. No statue of Jesus, Mary or the saints, to remind one of that heavenly club I wish to be a part of when I breathe my last. But the miracle of Mass gave me peace and tranquillity. I was almost home during Mass, just as I would be someday.
I forgot my chaplain’s name, but I remember our head chaplain was Cardinal Spellman of New York, boss of all priests in the Armed Forces. He told all -service men they could eat meat on Friday, but we must abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and the day before Christmas, unless in combat. Cardinal Spell-
man was a respected cleric and well liked.
Fr. Mefcavic and Fr. Malloy, my chaplains while stationed in Germany, kept reminding us, wearing a uniform did not excuse us from the laws of God. They were there for those who needed help of any sort.
It was Father Malloy who arranged my audience with Pope Pius XII, by giving me a letter to take to his superior in Rome. I’ve told you about that audience.
Our chaplains were in uniform, had rank instead of a Roman collar, but were always called “Father” and always were priests.
Fr. Mefcavic, my first chaplain in Germany, was replaced by Fr. Malloy before our 28th Inf. Div. rotated home to Pennsylvania, in May, 1954. I knew both chaplains, as I served Mass every Sunday.
I would love to hear and to see how they would tell their troops the job we trained for was immoral, was wrong.
My beloved Catholic Church is in a difficult position with at least one of its members. The Apostles Creed hasn’t changed, has it?
On this most holy day of all holy days may God bless you and may God bless. America.

State Representative (D-OH) Ed Jerse and his wife Shannon are happy to announce the birth of their son William Henry Jerse, who was bom on March 4, 2003 at Hillcrest Hospital.
William joins brother Teddy and sisters Mairin and Elizabeth. He is the grandson of Mary Jerse of Euclid, Ohio and Maureen Fogarty of Youngstown and the nephew of Father Bill Jerse. To date, William has displayed a healthy appetite and reasonable sleeping habits.

St. Mary’s (Collinwood) Fish Fries will be served in the school cafeteria also on Good Friday, April 18'\ but one half hour earlier from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Ocean perch dinners, including home fries and coleslaw are $7.00. Shrimp dinners or fish and shrimp combo dinners are $7.50. Children’s dinners and macaroni and cheese dinners are $3.50. Take-outs are also available.
St. Mary’s Easter Sunday Changes
St. Mary’s (Collinwood) Slovenian Mass on Easter Sunday will be at 7 a.m. English Masses will be at 9 a.m. and 12 noon. The Easter Vigil Mass on Holy Saturday will be celebrated at 8:30 p.m., since on this Holy Night, Mass must be celebrated after sunset.
Baraga's Corner
L’Anse and Assinins were the center of Baraga’s work for 10 years. Assinins was the name of an Indian chief baptized by Fr. Baraga and L’Anse was the home base of the priest’s labors from 1843 to 1853.
A church, school and homes were built on this site by Baraga, while writing his exhaustive grammar and dictionary of the Ojibwa language.

Crab Bisque
This is Ted Bryan’s recipe for crab bisque.
Ingredients:
Vi C onion, chopped fine 1 t salt 2 T butter	Vi t sugar
2 T flour	1 T parsley, chopped fine
1 can (14.5 oz) whole tomatoes	|
‘A C tomato puree	1 small bay leaf
1 can (6 l/2oz) crab meat (or fish)
1 clove garlic, peeled	1 t thyme, crushed
Water as needed	Vi t Hungarian paprika
1/8 t ground pepper	Parsley for garnish
Directions:
Saute onion in butter until golden. Add flour and stk until smooth. Cut tomatoes into small pieces, and add, with the liquid and tomato puree, to the flour mixture. Drain crab; (reserving liquid), and add water to liquid to make IVi eupS' Set crab meat aside. Spear garlic on a toothpick, and ^ with remaining ingredients (except crab meat) to saucepa11-; Simmer 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add flaked crab; meat and simmer 5 minutes longer. Remove garlic and bay leaf and serve. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley. Serves 4] Variation: add 1 cup of heavy cream af the end and heat to serving temperature (do not boil).

Slovenian Brewery May Buy Newspaper
LJUBLJANA
Pivovarna Laško brewery intends to acquire over 20% stake in Delo publisher, Slovenia’s leading newspaper house, having already received the Ministry of Culture’s permission for the purchase of a stake exceeding 20%.
Currently, the largest shareholder of Delo is Zvon 1 investment company, and it agreed to sell its stake to Lasko. The other shareholders of the publisher are internal ones: 14% the Slovenian Restitution Fund - 11.7%; investment company Maksima - 11%; and Infond Investment Company - 6.8%.

Slovenija včeraj v Atenah podpisala pristopno pogodbo o članstvu v EU
v posebni slovesnosti, ki je potekala včeraj v prestolnici Grčije, zgodovinsko pomembnih Atenah, je bila Slovenija ena od desetih kandidatk za polnopravno članstvo v Evropski uniji, ki je podpisala pristopno Pogodbo, ki bo predvidoma tekom enega leta vodila do tega članstva. V Atenah so se poleg slovesnosti vrstile tudi demonstracije, v prvi vrsti proti Veliki Britaniji in paniji, to zaradi močne podpore teh dveh držav pri od ZDA vodenem napadu na Irak.
Za Slovenijo so pristopno pogodbo podpisali predsednik države Janez Drnovšek, ki Je tudi bil eden od govornikov, ter premier Anton Rop in zunanji minister Dimitrij Ru-Pel. Slovesnost v Atenah je potekalo na znameniti Agori, prisotnih je bilo vsega skupaj 220 predstavnikov iz 28 držav, med Pjimi nekateri, katerih države so še vedno kandidtke (npr. Turčija). Evropski parlament (626 poslancev) v trasbourgu je s prepričljivo večino (522 za, 22 proti) dal svoje soglasje k vstopu Slove-nije v EU (poročevalec italijanski socialism poslanec slovenskega rodu Demetrij v°lčič). Ločeno je dal soglasje tudi za de-Vet drugih kandidatk (enako število glasov la dobili Madžarska in Latvija, druge manj, "ajmanj Češka - 489).
Slovenija je kot del nekdanje Jugoslav!-^ želela iti po lastni poti in po padcu ko-munizma se je obrnila proti EU. Izid refe-
renduma, ko je za EU glasovalo 90 odstotkov volivcev, je dokaz, kako privlačna je povezava za mlade države,” je dejal komisar za širitev Gunter Verheugen.
Slovenski učenci bolj na repu
Po mednarodni raziskavi bralne (ne)pi-smenosti (iz Slovenije 1972 tretješolcev, starih 9 ali 10 let, s 152 šol) je Slovenija 25. med 35 državami oziroma za razvitimi državami ter zaostaja za kandidatkami za EU (Latvija na primer 5., Madžarska 8., Slovaška 21.), ni pa poseben- dosežek biti pred Makedonijo, Turčijo, Iranom, Marokom ali Belizejem.
Mladi Slovenci (v povprečju so zbrali 502 točki, Švedi kot najboljši po 561 točk, Belizejci kot najslabši 327 točk) so v 12 letih od zadnje raziskave napredovali predvsem v razumevanju grafičnih prikazov (zemljevidi, grafi, sheme). V vseh državah so deklice dosegle boljše rezultate' kot dečki. Naslednja1 raziskava bo leta 2006.

Pekingu zaradi nevarnosti bolezni, sars
Zaradi izbruha atipične pljučnice na Kitajskem je Slovenija evakuirala družinske člane uslužbencev veleposlaništva na Kitajskem, poleg tega pa je na diplomatskem predstavništvu v Pekingu prenehala izdajati vizume. Zunanje ministrstvo je na spletni strani že izdalo opozorilo slovenskem državljanom glede akutnega sindroma oteženega dihanja (sars)1 v Jugovzhodni Aziji. MZZ svetuje vsem, ki nameravajo potovati na Filipine, Tajsko, v južno Kitajsko, Vietnam, Hongkong, Indonezijo in Singapur, naj zaradi nevarne pljučnice potovanje odložijo, če to ni nujno. Slovenski državljani, ki so že v navedenih državah, pa naj spremljajo obvestila in upoštevajo navodila pristojnih organov.

Dne 14. aprila je v Euclid bolnišnici umrla 74 let stara Valerie M. Baznik iz Euclida, rojena Per 8. julija 1928 v Clevelandu, žena Anthonyja, mati Margaret Hetz, Barbare Stevenson in Elizabeth Smith, 5-krat stara mati, sestra č.s. Margaret Mary Per S.N.D in že pok. Jean Brodnik, članica Oltarnega društvo pri sv. Vidu, Marijinega dvora pri Sv. Križu, KS KI št. 25, Kluba upokojencev na St. Clairju in na Waterloo Rd., zaposlena 25 let v oglaševalnem oddelku Plain Dealerja, vse do svoje upokojitve 1. 1993. Pogreb bo v torek, 22. aprila, v oskrbi Brickmanovega zavoda na 21900 Euclid Ave. s sv. mašo dop. ob 10. uri v cerkvi Sv. Križa in pokopom na Kalvarije pokopališču. VELIKA NOČ BOŽJE LJUBEZNI
Vse na tem svetu je zaznamovano z minljivostjo in s krhkostjo. Čeprav obhajamo veliko noč spomladi, ko se življenje zopet prebuja v vsem svojem zaletu, je ta praznik veliko več kot samo praznik pomladi. Vsaka pomlad mine in se prevesi v poletje, jesen in zimo. Življenje tega sveta ne more ubežati minljivosti. Mladenič iz Naima, Jairova hči in Lazar iz Betanije, ki jih je Jezus obudil nazaj v življenje, so tudi morali umreti. Njihova vrnitev v življenje je bila le za nekaj časa.
Celo naša moralna odločenost in pripadnost Gospodu je izpostavljena nevarnosti, da bo omahnila in ne bo zdržala do konca. Dar vere, upanja in ljubezni nosimo v prstenih posodah, pravi apostol Pavel in hoče s tem opozoriti, naj se nikoli ne čutimo preveč varne, predvsem pa naj ne zaupamo le vase. Tisti, ki stoji, naj gleda, da ne pade. Tudi zgled apostolov ob Jezusovem prijetju nas opozarja, da se ne moremo zanašati nase, ampak moramo moliti, prositi za pomoč in moč z višave.
Jezusovo vstajenje od mrtvih pa je dokončna zmaga življenja nad smrtjo in ljubezni nad sovraštvom. V igri namreč ni človek, ampak Bog. Bog pa je zvest. On se je že Judom razodel kot tisti, ki je: “Jaz sem, ki sem” (2 Mz 3,14). Kakor trdno stoji v sebi sam, tako drži tudi njegova beseda. Celo umor Božjega Sina Boga ne more omajati v njegovi zavezi in ljubezni do nas. Zato Bog spremeni naš zločin v naš blagoslov. Taka je njegova zvestoba. Velika noč je njeno najvišje razodetje in potrditev, zato pa tudi najmočnejša podlaga za naše upanje in poziv k naši vztrajnosti in zvestobi.
Naše življenje ne bo večno poskušanje in neomejena veriga popravnih izpitov kot v kakšni reinkarnaciji. Bog se je tako zavzel za nas, da nas je prestavil v dokončno kraljestvo svojega Sina, ker je njegova ljubezen dokončna in njegova zvestoba neomajna. Dokončnost božje ljubezni je torej edina razlaga odrešenja, ki ga oznanja velika noč: "...Kristus, potem ko je vstal od mrtvih, več ne umrje, smrt nad njim nima več oblasti” (Rim 6, 9).
Menjave in življenjsko usihanje začnemo prej ali slej čutiti vsi. Še bolj nas prizadevajo najrazličnejši drugi porazi in neuspehi v našem prizadevanju. Posebno močno nas boli, če imamo občutek, da je krivica na pohodu, da laž zmaguje in da sebičnost prevladuje. Boli nas, ko je zasramovanju izpostavljeno božje kraljestvo ter naše narodne in krščanske svetinje. V ta mrk naše pobitosti in razočaranj, v katerih smo včasih tudi mi podobni zbeganim in razočaranim učencem, v našo noč naveličanosti in utrujenosti posije luč velikonočne sveče kot obljuba dokončnega odrešenja, dokončne zmage božje ljubezni.
Vsem vam, bratje in sestre v Gospodu, vsem ljudem, ki ste nam blizu v plemenitem prizadevanju za zmago resnice in pravičnosti, predvsem pa vsem tistim, ki ste z boleznijo in nesrečo posebej pridruženi Gospodu na križu, voščim v imenu slovenskih škofov blagoslovljenega velikonočnjega upanja za srečne in vesele praznike Vstajenja.

Izpod zvona sv. Marije Vnebovzete
CLEVELAND, O. - Pretekli teden smo čistili našo cerkev in se zares pozna, da je vse umito, vse se sveti, pripravljena je za velik praznik.
V	pripravi na bližnji praznik je bilo delanje krofov in prodaja prinesenega peciva našega Oltarnega društva. Vse je šlo v kupčijo in hvala vsem za vse prinešeno, pokupljeno ter tudi vsem delavkam za ves njihov trud. Bog vam vsem povrni!
V	tej dobi je tudi delanje butar za cvetno nedeljo, ki je bilo par večerov na šolskem hodniku. In na cvetni nedelji Je bilo veliko mladine z
butarami v roki, ko so se udeležili blagoslova zelenja in butar pred župniščem. Veliko je bilo narodnih noš, da se je vse spreminjalo v lepo pesem, kot v Jeruzalemu, ko je Jezus jezdil na osliču v tempelj.
Otroci Slovenske šole so brali Pasijon. Hvala vam, otroci, lepo ste sodelovali in nas popeljali v tiste temne dni. K še lepšemu prazniku Je pripomoglo tudi sonce, ki nas je razveseljevalo, saj je kljub hladu bil občutek pomladi.
Tridnevje je pred nami, udeležujmo se in sodelujmo s svojo prisotnostjo.
To soboto popoldne ob eni in tretji uri bo blagoslov jedil v naši cerkvi. Prinesimo jedila, da bodo blagoslovljena in se obenem zahvalimo ljubemu Bogu za vse dobrote, ki jih prejemamo vsak dan. Naj bo to naša iskrena zahvala!
Na Velikonočno Jutro bo Vstajenje že ob sedmi uri. Zopet so naprošene narodne noše, naj se s ponosom in veseljem udeleže te veličastnosti. Prezgodnja bo ura za otro-čad, a kar Je mladine, naj se z veseljem udeleži v narodni noši Vstajenja. Veselimo se, Kristus je vstal, odprl nam je nebesa, kamor nas vodi naša POT V VEČNOST!
Na belo nedeljo, prvo po Veliki noči, torej 27. aprila, smo povabljene članice Oltarnega društva, da se udeležimo molitev in sestanka Zveze oltarnih društev, ki bo pri Sv. Vidu ob drugi uri popoldne. Pridite, da se pomenimo o našem delu, poslušamo poročila o delu v preteklem letu, mislimo na romanje v Le-mont, pa se poveselimo med znankami in dobimo nova poznanja. Pridite!

O skupni evropski obrambni politiki ...

Ljubljana (Delo fax, 11. aprila) - Odbor za zuna-nJo politiko državnega zbora je 10. aprila govo-ril o pismu poslanca Aurelia Jurija. Na premiera Antona Ropa je naslovil Poziv in v njem predlaga, naJ Slovenija pristopi k Pobudi štirih članic Evropske unije Belgije, Nem-čiJe, Francije in Luksem-^rga za krepitev skupne evropske obrambne polivke oziroma jo vsaj pod-Pre. Člani odbora so se s pobudo samo seznanili. Oprave skoraj ni bilo.
Aurelio Juri (op. ur.: ^an Združene liste in nasprotnik vstopa Slovenije v NATO) je podaril, da je predsednik evropske komisije Roma-n° Prodi nedavno pozval k krepitvi skupne obram-*5tle politike in zlasti popravil pobudo četverice, ki je za 26. april v Bru-SlJu sklicala mini vrh na to tem°- Modro in koristno
načelno za
bi bilo, pravi Juri, če bi se Slovenija na pragu EU temu pridružila oziroma če bi na napovedanem sestanku sodelovala vsaj kot opazovalka.
Slovenija idejo o skupni evropski obrambni in varnostni politiki vsekakor podpira in v njej tudi ne vidi protislovja z vlogo NATA, je rekel zunanji minister Dimitrij Rupel. Toda o njej ni bila formalno obveščena, povabljena ni bila in s sklepnim dokumentom, ki je v pripravi, ni bila seznanjena. Belgijsko zunanje ministrstvo jo je le obvestilo, da je pobuda odprta za vse zainteresirane države.
Opredeljevanje bo mogoče šele na podlagi sklepov in Slovenija bo o tem lahko razmišljala šele po podpisu pogodbe z Evropsko unijo 16. aprila v Atenah, je dejal vodja diplomacije. Dodal

je, da se mu zamisel zdi koristno, a samo, če je odprta za vse. Kakor je dodal, je grško predsedstvo že sporočilo, da ni smiselno, da bi se pristopnice opredeljevale do pobude.
O Jurijevi pobudi sta govorila predsednik odbora Jelko Kacin (LDS) in Janez Janša (SDS). Prvi je rekel, da se mu zdi nadvse “zanimivo”, kdo so pobudnike ideje o krepitvi skupne evropske obrambne politike: tisti, ki so nedavno nasprotovali premestitvi oboroženih sistemov NATA na ozemlje Turčije, in tisti, ki v svoji državi najmanj namenjajo za o-brambo.
Janša je rekel, da pobuda Belgije, Nemčije, Francije in Luksemburga nikakor ni mirovniška, pomeni povečanje stroškov in podvajanje z NATOM. “Ni dobro, da bi v teh pobudah videli alternative, ki jih ni.”
Odbor je sprejel tudi poročilo o delu Mednarodnega sklada za razminiranje in pomoč žrtvam min (ITF) v letu 2002: predstavil ga je njegov direktor Jernej Cimper-šek. Skladu ITF, ki deluje pet let in velja z paradnega konja slovenske zunanje politike, so poslanci izrekli priznanje in sprejeli poročilo.
Med vprašanji in pobudami je parlamentarce zanimala povojna humanitarna pomoč Iraku. Minister Rupel je povedal, da je vlada prejšnji dan (10. aprila) obravnavala pomoč v okviru Mreže za človekovo varnost in v okviru Združenih narodov; gre za pomoč trav-matiziranim otrokom. Vlada je odobrila tudi pomoč Unicefu v višini 15 milijonov tolarjev. V poznejši etapi pa bi se lahko vključil v pomoč povojnemu Iraku tudi Mednarodni sklad za razminiranje.

Ali se Cerkev v Sloveniji stara in manjša?
Kew, Avstralija (Misli, april 2003) - Takšno vprašanje so zapisali na prvi strani katoliškega tednika Družina nad sliko brezjanske bazilike v osmi številki, 23. februarja 2003 in dodali: Potrebujemo duhovnikov.
V slovenskih škofijah vsako leto pripravijo statistiko. Iz leta v leto je opazno rahlo upadanje duhovniških poklicev in višanje povprečne starosti duhovnikov. Očitno se tudi na tem področju že kažejo spremembe v demografski sliki, ki za Slovenijo že nekaj let ni obetavna. Tako je konec lanskega leta na enega duhovnika prišlo približno 1676 državljanov Republike Slovenije (katoličanov je seveda manj). Ob tem podatku je treba spomniti, da nekaj deset slovenskih duhovnikov deluje v tujini, nekaj jih je upokojenih. Tako pride na enega duhovnika še večje število.
Vseh duhovnikov (škofijskih in redovnikov) je bilo konec lanskega leta 1181. Za primerjavo: v Sloveniji je konec leta 2001 delovalo 4526 zdravnikov, kar je skoro štirikrat več kot duhovnikov. Zanimiv je tudi podatek o podeljeni birmi. Zakrament birme je prejelo 12.426 birmancev. Če bi birmovali le aktivni škofje (brez upokojenih), bi vsak izmed osmih škofov moral birmati 1553 birmancev ali vsako nedeljo v letu približno 30. Nekaj podatkov po posameznih škofijah. Podatki v oklepaju veljajo za konec leta 2001:
V	koprski škofiji je bilo inkardiniranih 163 (163) duhovnikov. Povprečna starost duhovnikov je bila 56 let, 6 mesecev in 12 dni (55 let, 10 mesecev in 27 dni). Lani je bil posvečen le en škofijski duhovnik, predlani samo en redovni. V škofiji deluje 31 (32) redovnikov in 85 (77) redovnic. V bogoslovju je enako število bogoslovcev 11 (11). Umrl je en (5) duhovnik. Kanonično poslanstvo je prejelo 14 katehistinj, birmanih je bilo 1333 (1596) birmancev.
V	ljubljanski nadškofiji se je število duhovnikov zmanjšalo na 422 (424), na račun manjšega števila redovnikov 164 (175) in enega duhovnika več umrlega 8 (11), kot je bilo posvečenih 7 (6). Manj je bilo tudi posvečenih redovnikov 1 (6). Obetajoča podatka sta povečano število bogoslovcev 45 (42) in manjša povprečna starost duhovnikov približno 56 (59) let. V lanskem letu je bila zasedena ena župnija več, birmanih pa je bilo 3358 birmancev.
V	mariborski škofiji je lani delovalo pet redovnih duhovnikov manj 74 (79), kar je približno izenačilo število umrlih 5 (6) in posvečenih duhovnikov 3 (2). Vseh škofijskih duhovnikov je bilo 327 (332). Birmanih je bilo 7735 birmancev (7013).

Celovec (Delo fax, 11. aprila) - V slovenski tiskarni Drava v Celovcu so 10. aprila natisnili prvo številko novega skupnega slovenskega tednika Novice. Novi časopis je danes (11. aprila) dobilo približno 3500 gospodinjstev na južnem Koroškem in v Celovcu. Izdajatelja Novic sta krovni politični organizaciji slovenske manjšine na avstrijskem Koroškem, Narodni svet koroških Slovencev (NSKS) in Zveza slovenskih organizacij (ZSO), založnik pa je nova slovenska medijska družba Slomedia. Glavni urednik tednika je Peter Wie-ser. Novice naj bi nadomestile politična tednika Slovenski vestnik (ZSO) in Naš tednik (NSKS), ki sta ju organizaciji konec maja uradno ukinili. Toda zaradi nesoglasij v NSKS glede priprav in politične usmeritve Novicše naprej izhaja tudi Naš tednik.	I. L.

Pater Tone je pod tem naslovom v junijskih Mislih leta 1996 zapisal:
“Med 27. julijem in 6. avgustom vas bodo obiskali popisovalci in vam dali formularje, ki jih boste morali izpolniti. Po zadnjem štetju leta 1991 nas je uradno le okoli 6.400. Predzadnje štetje je imelo precej večje številko: nekaj nad 16.800.
pe hočemo kot sloven-~sko skupnost v Avstraliji tudi praktično obstati, se moramo letos bolj potruditi, da bi se vsi s slovenskimi koreninami predstavili kot Slovenci.
Zakaj je to pomembno? Samo če dokažemo, da nas je nekaj, lahko pred državo opravičimo potrebo po učenju slovenskega jezika v državnih šolah, ure slovenskih programov na različnih radijskih postajah in televiziji, tudi potrebo po slovenskih duhovnikih (napisati moramo tudi, da smo katoličani) in podobno.”

Gospod Florjan Avser je letos januarja zapisal na drugi strani Glasa Slovenije-.
“Uradni podatki pravijo, da nas je pol milijona, ki živimo žunaj Slovenije. Neuradni podatki pravijo, da nas je v Avstraliji vsaj dvajset tisoč, pa se človek, ko obiskuje naše klube in cerkve sprašuje, ja, kje pa so vsi ti Slovenci, saj nas je kaj več kot sto skoraj nikoli ne obišče kakšne od slovenskih zabav ali slovenske maše. Največ se nas zbere na pogrebih, otroški jok novorojenčkov pa je v slovenskih družinah, tako tukaj kot doma, že prava .•edkost...”
V knjigi Brede Čebulj-S?jko z naslovom Med srečo in svobodo, Ljubljana 1992, beremo na s Tani 77:	“Leta	1973,
2iio leto po tem, kc je delegacija Slovenske izse-jenske matice prvič obi-;kala avstralske Sloven-
ce, je bilo v Rodni grudi objavljeno, da na avstralski celini v večjih mestih živi 17.355 Slovencev.
Avtorica članka pa dodaja, da je tej številki potrebno prišteti še '4.645 naših ljudi, ki živijo v drugih krajih Avstralije’. Tako naj bi bilo po približnih ocenah tamkaj prebivalo od 20 do
22.000	Slovencev.
Podobne ugotovitve se
nahajajo tudi v Slovenskem koledarju, kjer je omenjeno, da glede Slovencev v Avstraliji "točnega števila ne vemo ... O-cene ljudi, ki imajo največ vpogleda v to, se gibljejo od 15 do 30 tisoč. Po naši oceni bo število
20.000	še najbližje resnici...”
Glede na to, da se je izseljevanje Slovencev v Avstralijo zaključilo okoli leta 1975, so nekateri mnenja, da je realnejše govoriti o številki 25.000. Vanjo naj bi bili zajeti izseljenci prve generacije. Tako Breda Čebulj-Sajko pred enajstimi leti.
Pater Bazilij je 9. aprila 1991 napisal dokument v angleščini:	To

“Tukaj potrjujem, da vsebuje datoteka Slovenskega verskega in kulturnega središča v Kew okoli 1500 naslovov slovenskih družin, ki živijo v Viktoriji, največ izmed njih v Melbournu. To število pomeni najmanj 5000 do 6000 Slovencev.
Po mojem štetju bi moralo biti vsaj še 600 več naslovov slovenskih družin v Viktoriji, ki niso registrirane v našem središču niti ne pri kakšnem viktorijskem klubu. Takšne zasledim od časa do časa, posebno ko rabijo kakšno obliko pomoči. Imam tudi okoli 200 tako imenovanih "mrtvih naslovov” družin, ki so se preselile in niso sporočile spremembe naslova. Skoraj vsak teden dodam temu seznamu en ali dva naslova teh “izgubljenih družin”.
Seznam porok slovenske cerkve (bistveni del našega središča v Kew) vsebuje 1395 porok in v Krstno knjigo je vpisanih 2644 imen krščencev -slovenskih otrok.
Veliko več otrok iz slovenskih družin je bilo krščenih v avstralskih župnijah in veliko porok Slovencev je bilo sklenjenih v avstralskih cerkvah ali na poročnih uradih (Registry Office).
Po moji najboljši presoji bi bilo število Slovencev v Viktoriji nekje med 10.000 in 12.000. Na žalost so podatki Slovencev v Avstraliji neznani, kajti sem smo imigri-rali kot jugoslovanski, ita-lijanski ali avstrijski državljani. Vendar smo različna narodna skupina, s svojim lastnim jezikom in kulturo, staro nad deset stoletij.”
Prešteli so nas!
In koliko Slovencev so našteli leta 1996? Na internetni strani avstralskega statističnega urada najdemo vse podatke.
Od tam povzamemo: Štetje prebivalstva v letu 1996 je zabeležilo 6.640 v Avstraliji živečih oseb, ki so bile rojene v Sloveniji. V Viktoriji jih živi 2.829, v New South Wales 2.233, v Južni Avstraliji 502 in v Queens-landu 484.
Povprečna starost v Sloveniji rojenih ljudi v
Avstraliji je bila	leta
1996 59.0 let - v primerjavi 34.0 let je bila povprečna starost Avstralcev.
V Sloveniji rojenih Avstralcev je bilo 3.567 moških (53,7%) in 3.073 žensk (46,3%). V popisu leta 1996 se je večina izjavila za katoličane (5,822), luteranov je bilo 53 in jehovcev 49.
4,2% sta se izjavila za neverne, kar je precej manj, kot jih je od celote avstralskega prebivalstva - 16,6%.
Druga generacija - O-troci v Sloveniji rojenih staršev:	5.834, kar je
806 manj, kot v Sloveniji rojenih.
Če vse to seštejemo, dobimo približno število slovenske skupnosti v Avstraliji - in to je 12.474 oseb.
Opomba:	Pred letom
1996 popis prebivalstva ni razlikoval različnih držav nekdanje SFRJ. Popis leta 1996 je prvič zaobsegel sedaj nove neodvisne države: Hrvaško, Slovenijo, Bosno in Hercegovino, nekdanjo jugoslovansko republiko Makedonijo ter nekdanjo jugoslovansko republiko Srbijo in Črno goro.
Zaradi bližine teh dogodkov je še vedno 32% ljudi zapisalo le, da so rojeni v nekdanji Jugoslaviji. Zato so končni podatki pomanjkljivi.
Tako poroča o popisu iz leta 1996 za The Slo-venia-born Community Department of Immigration ' and Multicultural Affairs na svoji spletni strani.
Iz slovenskega veleposlaništva v Canberri so mi 23. marca 2003 poslali podatek, ki so ga dobili na ministrstvu za imigracijo, da je bilo po zadnjem popisu leta 2001 skupaj 15.934 oseb (rojenih v Sloveniji plus o-sebe s slovenskimi predniki). To je za 3.460 oseb več, kot je to pokazal popis leta 1996.
Torej, koliko nas je?
Po podatkih zadnjega popisa leta 2001 nas Je skoraj 16.000.
Misli imajo v Avstraliji 1600 naročnikov. Naslovov rojakov v Viktoriji pa imamo sedaj v našem središču 1202. In še vedno doživljamo usodo pokojnega p. Bazilija, ko piše o "mrtvih naslovih”.
Rafael v Sydneyju ima 1456 naslovov rojakov iz NSW, ACT, QLD in WA (ur. AD: To so kratice za avstralske države).
Glas Slovenije ima nad 400 naročnikov. Na internetu ga prebere 150 ljudi iz 45 držav - isto velja za internetno branje Misli.

nadski slovenski kongres (KSK) je imel v nedeljo, aprila, letni občni zbor Z(lružen s pomembno kulturno prireditvijo z uaslovom “Slovenska Istra

Kljub izrednim vreme-skim neprilikam - 3 dni namreč padel leden ki je praktično onemogočil vsakršen promet

Poročal je tudi o skupnih slovenskih nastopih. Podrobno pa se je zadržal pri dveh glavnih dejavnostih, pri organizaciji gostovanja slovenskih rojakov iz Slovenske Istre in o organizaciji podpore slovenskim rojakom v Argentini.
Povabil je prisotne slovenske izobražence v Kanadi, naj se letos udeleže srečanja slovenskih znanstvenikov in poslovnikov na Bledu.
Poleg fizično prisotnih članov KSK so bili prisotni po pooblastilih tudi člani iz Vancouvra, Wi-nnipega ter Ottawe in Windsorja.
Prof. Jerry Ponikvar je obširno analiziral sedanji kongresni program in hkrati tudi predstavil potrebo po posodobitvi tega programa, to še posebej v luči dejstva, da bo na-

Dr. France Habjan je poročal o poteku nabirke za vračajoče rojake iz ArgenUne. Začetek je razveseljiv.
Stane Kranjc, kot voditelj projekta, je poročal o izidu kanadskega cenzusa leta 2001. Tokrat se je izreklo za slovensko pripadnost skoraj 30 tisoč rojakov.
Dr. Janez Vintar je poročal, da je dokončal zgodovinsko študijo, ki bo izšla kot knjiga, o naseljevanju prvih slovenskih rojakov v severnem Ontariu, v bližnji prihodnosti.
V nov odbor sta bila izvoljena Milan Štefanec iz Hamiltona ter ing. Tone Seljak iz Toronta.
Letošnji občni zbor je dokazal, da bo kongresna organizacija tudi v bodoče odločno naravnana in prizadevna v korist slovenske skupnosti v Kanadi.

Po končanem občnem zboru je pričela v veliki dvorani kulturna prireditev, posvečena Slovenski Istri. Tokrat moremo reči, da smo slovenski rojaki v Torontu prvikrat resnično doživljali podobo dežele ob slovenskem morju. Do nedavnega je bilo to območje na obrobju slovenskega dogajanja, danes pa sodi med najbolj gospodarsko razvite kraje Slovenije.
Člani Slovenskega radijskega kluba so recitirali poezijo največjega pesnika in domoljuba Slovenske Istre, župnika Alojzija Kocjančiča (1913-1991), doma iz Kubeta.

Geografska predstavitev
Slovenska Istra je ozemlje, ki se razteza od tržaškega predmestja naprej, med kraškim robom in Slavnikovim pogorjem na eni strani in Tržaškim zalivom na drugi, in sega uradno nekje do reke Dragonje.
V preteklosti so bili poseljeni s Slovenci tudi še bližnji kraji onstran Dragonje (Kaštel, Savudrija idr.), vendar je bilo po drugi svetovni vojni to slovensko obrobje priključeno k Republiki Hrvaški in se je slovensko prebivalstvo počasi asimiliralo s tamkaj živečimi Hrvati.
Ozemlje Slovenske Istre je administrativno razdeljeno na tri priobalne občine in sicer Koper, Izola in Piran. Na njem živi okrog 78.000 prebivalcev, od tega skoraj dve tretjini (48.300) v občini Koper, ki so strnjeno naseljeni predvsem v obalnem pasu, medtem ko je zaledje zaradi povojnega eksodusa in preseljevanja v obalna mesta demografsko ogroženo.
Po narodnostnem sestavu je prebivalstvo pretežno slovensko, z okrog 3000 Italijani in 15.000 priseljenci iz nekdanjih jugoslovanskih republik.
Med slovenskimi prebivalci je polovica avtohtonih Istranov, ostalo pa so povojni priseljenci iz ostalih predelov Slovenije, predvsem Primorske.
Do druge svetovne vojne je bila Slovenska Istra gospodarsko nerazvito področje, z nekaj ribje industrije v mestih in gosto poseljenim agrarnim zaledjem, ki se je s svojo razdrobljeno posestvo komaj preživljalo.
S priključitvijo k Jugoslaviji pa je doživela hiter gospodarski razvoj ter sodi danes med razvita področja Slovenije, predv-se, po zaslugi blagovnega prometa, turizma, industrije, pomorskih in sto-

ritvenih dejavnosti ter drobnega gospodarstva.
Pri tem izstopa Luka Koper, ki je v nekaj desetletjih obstoja, s sedanjimi 10 milijoni ton prometa prehitele Reko in že dosegla Trst, če odmislimo tekoče tovore (nafto, plin).
Naravno regionalno središče Slovenske Istre je Koper, tako po svoji zgodovinski vlogi in gospodarski moči, kot tudi po koncentraciji kulturnih, raziskovalnih, visokošolskih in drugih ustanov (gledališče, arhiv, muzej, univerza. Koprska škofija idr.).
Kratek zgodovinski oris
Istra nosi ime po His-trih, to je veji Ilirov, ki so ta prostor naseljevali že v predrimskem času. Kot prostor na prepihu je pogosto menjavala gospodarje (Rimljani, Zahodno in Vzhodno rimsko cesarstvo, Goti, Langobardi, Franki, Oglejski patriarhat, stoletja Beneške republike), dokler ni 1815. leta pripadla Avstro-Ogrs-ki.
Po prvi svetovni vojni je bila 1920. leta z Rapalsko pogodbo priključena Kraljevini Italiji. S to spremembo je bilo o-krog 570.000 Slovencev in Hrvatov nekdanje Julijske krajine odtrganih od svoje matice in v dveh desetletjih fašističnega terorja izpostavljenih silovitemu raznarodovanju.
Po drugi svetovni vojni je bil s pariško Mirovno pogodbo (1947) večji del Istre priključen k Jugoslaviji, manjši del, vključno s Koprom, Izolo in Piranom, pa je bil vključen v tamponsko državico, imenovano Svobodno tržaško ozemlje, ki pa ni nikoli resnično zaživela ter je bila z Londonskim sporazumom (1954) razdeljena in priključena deloma k Italiji (Trst z o-kolico), deloma k Jugo-

ne vem, če Imajo vsi skupaj tisoč članov. Ob nedeljah se zbere v Kew pri mašah v povprečju okoli dvesto ljudi.
2. postna nedelja, 16. marca 2003:
V	Kew je bilo pri obeh mašah 239 ljudi (gostoval je zbor Plamen iz Kanade, bila je tretja nedelja - družinsko kosilo; na te nedelje je največji obisk). Ob 8. uri: 4 moški, 8 žensk, 2 dekleti. Ob 10. uri: 16 o-trok, 130 žensk - od tega 17 mladih, 78 moških - od tega 14 mladih. Pri maši v klubu Jadran ob 12. uri je bilo 77 ljudi. Pri molitvi v Geelon-gu za +Ano Jager se je zvečer zbralo okoli 100 ljudi.
V	Merrylandsu je bilo pri sobotni maši 25 ljudi in v nedeljo ob 9.30 je bilo 8 otrok, 82 moških - od tega 5 mladih, 119 žensk - od tega 11 mladih. Skupaj vseh je bilo 25+209 = 234.

V	Canberri je bilo tisto nedeljo zvečer pri slovenski maši 16 moških (3 mladi), 17 žensk (od teh 5 mladih). Skupaj vseh 33.
3. postna nedelja, 23. marca 2003:
V	Kew je bilo pri obeh mašah 175 ljudi. Pri maši ob 8. uri: 10 žensk,
5	moških. Ob 10. uri; 86 žensk, 57 moških, 11 mladih,, 6 otrok. (V soboto popoldne, 2. marca 2003, je bilo v Kew na praznovanje 25-letnice slovenskega jezika v državnih šolah Viktorije skupaj z gosti in nastopajočimi od 220-240 ljudi.)
V	Merrylandsu je bilo
v soboto zvečer 26 ljudi. V nedeljo ob 9.30: 10 o-trok, 81 žensk +	26
mladih žensk, 56 moških + 10 mladeničev = 183. Sobota + nedelja skupaj = 209 ljudi.
V	Figtree je bilo ob 5. popoldne pri slovenski maši 42 ljudi: 25 žensk, 17 moških.
V	Adelaidi je bilo pri maši 98 ljudi: 11 otrok,
6	mladih, 81 odraslih.
Tako govorijo številke. Ne povedo vsega, povedo pa, koliko lahko še skupaj stopimo in kaj lahko še skupaj zmoremo. Še vedno velja tudi ugotovitev patra Bazilija, da se “neznani" prikažejo, ko potrebujejo kakšno pomoč. Kar nekajkrat so me našli, ker je bilo potrebno “nekaj podpisat”. Nemčija je nekaj dala, Italija je nekaj dala, denacionalizacija ... Vsi pa zahtevajo neke podpise.
In se srečamo rojaki.
Da je umrl pater Bazi-lij, ne boste verjeli, to je lahko še vedno novica tudi med Slovenci v Melbournu. To se mi je zgodilo že vsaj trikrat. Na mednarodnem letališču pred odhodom Laudinega letala 1. marca letos sem slučajno srečal Slovenca, ki živi že 50 let v Melbournu, pa ni vedel ne za kluba ne za cerkev ne za slovenske radijske oddaje.
Milo se je stožilo njegovemu bratu, ki ga je
skupaj s svojo ženo obiskal, ko je slišal za vse to. On pa nič... Pa kaj, naj zdaj jokamo za izgubljenimi? Po svetopisemsko se moramo veseliti nas najdenih!
In morda še primerjava, koliko ljudi pride na enega slovenskega duhovnika v Avstraliji. V Sloveniji pride na enega duhovnika 1676 ljudi, v Avstraliji pa 4000 in tisoči kilometrov!
Je pa res, da jih duhovnik v Sloveniji lahko sreča dva tisoč, na Brezjah pa tudi štiri tisoč pri eni maši, v Avstraliji pa se že težko zbere štiristo Slovencev na enem kraju.	p. Ciril

Ljenko Urbančič, ŠE NEKAJ IVERJA, Sydney 2003. To je naslov že pete knjige izpod peresa Ljenka Urbančiča. Knjigo je predstavil 16. februarja 2003 v dvorani Verskega in kulturnega središča v Merrylandsu g. Franc Pukšič, predsednik Komisije Državnega zbora RS za Slovence v zamejstvu in po svetu.
Častni generalni konzul g. Alfred Brežnik RS za New South Wales je podal nekaj podatkov o piscu. Navzoč je bil tudi častni generalni konzul RS za Novo Zelandijo g. Dušan Lajovic s soprogo Sašo.
Knjiga ima 242 strani in vsebuje tudi 13 razgovorov s slovenskimi kulturniki leta 1944, ki so bili objavljeni v ljubljanskem Jutru. Knjigo je o-blikoval Danilo Kalin. Barbara Suša piše o Urbančiču kot literatu, obdarjenem z literarno žilico, ko se lahko izkaže kot pravi mojster črtice in anekdote, saj zna spretno ubesediti dogodek in pričarati razpoloženje trenutka.

Bogata kronika (136 strani) velikega dela poučevanja slovenskega jezika v Viktoriji z mnogimi informacijami in bogato slikovno opremo.
Knjiga je bogat pričevalec časa srebrnega jubileja, v katerem je obiskovalo slovensko šolo 500 učencev in 78 jih je naredilo maturo iz slovenskega jezika.
Knjigo je predstavil na slovesnosti 25-letnice poučevanja slovenskega jezika v državnih šolah Viktorije 22. marca 2003 g. Bojan Bertoncelj.

Dr. Tone Kačinik je žlahtno predstavil pesnika, v katerem je našel najvišjo mero predanosti duhovnika svojim ljudem. Zaključil je: "Morda bo kdaj izmed sadov teh brazd / utrujen potnik brašna si nabral. / Takrat in zdaj zahvaljen Bog za slast, / da bratom vračam, kar si meni dal."
Pet Kocjančičevih pesmi sta recitirala dr. Kačinik in ga. Mimi Radovan, z glasbenimi vložki ju je spremljal kitarist Alek Hočevar, na besedilo in napev župnika Dominika Pegana “Strunjanska romarska”.
Zgodovinsko in družbeno podobo Istre je podal publicist Milan Gregorič iz Tinjana, ki se kot povabljeni govornik zaradi zdravja ni mogel podati na dolgo pot v Toronto. Njegov govor je prebrala ga. Irena Urbič, kulturna delavka in članica kluba “Istra” v Kopru.
Gregorčev pregleden text (objavljen v AD začenši danes, v nadaljevanjih, op. ur. AD) je nazorno pred-
stavil zgodovinsko, družbeno in kulturno stanje v Slovenski Istri. Dotaknil se je tudi kulturne prebuje, ki se je začela ob koncu 80h let s ponovnim odkritjem in ovrednotenjem istrskega Čedermaca, duhovnika in pesnika Alojzija Kocjančiča. Okoli njega se je začelo zbirati staro in mlado. Razveseljivo je prebujal: “Pridi brat, da odkrijem svoj zaklad, da ti povem, kako sem mlad, ka-ko razkošno sem bogat.”
Piransko vprašartje je Gregorič prikazal zelo pregledno z upanjem, da bo to vprašanje dobilo svojo rešitev v novem mednarodnem sklopu, v EU.
Kar je z besedo povedal, je etnologinja in zgodovinarka Rozana Koštial v sliki in s pesmijo prikazala živo sliko Slovenske Iskre in njeno na novo odkrito bogastvo. Stare istrske pesmi je pela temperamentno in z razkošnim humorjem, in tako takoj osvojila pozornost navzočih.
V istrski narodni noši, z obilnim svežnjem ojč-nih vejic ter s skrajnim občutjem je umetniško predstavila kulturno dediščino Slovenske Istre skozi čas. Med drugim je dejala: Že iz družinske vzgoje sem čutila potrebo po ovrednotenju narečja v istrskem prostoru.”
Kulturni program Je sklenila folklorna skupina Nagelj pod vodstvom Cirila Sorška. Letošnja prireditev sploh je bila ena najkvalitetnejših, kar smo jih doživeli v slovenskih dvoranah. Istrski večer je bil pravi umetniški užitek. Ga. Koštial je na koncu razdeljevala istrske oljčne vejice pri' šotnim, kot nalašč v velikonočno razpoloženje.
Prireditev je obiskal predsednik Državnega sveta Slovenije, g. Janez Sušnik, v spremstvu veleposlanice Veronike Stabej. G. Sušnik je imel srečanje s predstavnik1 obeh zbornic kanadskega parlamenta in tudi 8 premierom kanadske vlade, g. Jeanom Chretie-nom. G. Sušnik in veleposlanica Stabej sta pozdravila in nagovorila občinstvo in se pomudila več časa v razgovorih z gosti. Po programu so bili vsi povabljeni na okusno zakusko. ^
Misijonska srečanja in pomenki
1473. VELIKA NOČ!
Še nekaj dni in zopet bomo doživeli v vsej polnosti velikonočne praznike. Po cerkvah bodo praznično zadoneli zvonovi: Kristus je vstal! Aleluja! Vse bo tako praznično in zmagoslavno. Velikonočna voščila in stiski rok, polni novega upanja, ter iskrenih želja.
V imenu MZA moje iskrene čestitke k velikonočnemu prazniku prav vsem, ki bodo brali to velikonočno številko AD.
Tudi nekaj misijonarjev se je oglasilo za te velikonočne praznike z zahvalami dobrotnikom za redno pomoč. Tako piše sr. Andreja Šubelj iz Čileja: Vesele velikonočne praznike! Želim vsem in vsakemu posebej milost doživetja našega odrešenja. Kako dober in čudovit je Bog!
Tokrat moja iskrena zahvala za vso pomoč, ki so jo P« dobroti MZA deležni naši ubogi otroci v Domu sirot. Misijonski pozdrav po Mariji, hvaležna sr. M. Andreja.” Misijonar iz Tokia g. Vladimir Kos se oglaša s sledečimi vrsticami:
VELIKA NOČ ZA MZA
Letos 13. maja bo 47 let mojega življenja na Japonskem. Še zmeraj me obdajajo šintoistični bogovi, o katerih so Japonci prepričani, da bivajo v hramih, v gorah in gozdovih in v rekah ter v morju. Če vprašate Japonce, koliko Je tehbogov, vam bodo po vsej verjetnosti odgovorili: Ogromno število. Verni šintoisti se imajo s temi bogovi v sorodstvu. Toda niti eden teh bogov se do danes ni za nas ljudi žrtvoval, tako kot se je Kristus.
Isto velja rimske in grške bogove, isto za bogove kateregakoli naroda na zemlji: sami sebe ne žrtvujejo za nas, nebožanske ljudi. Buda, početnik budizma, je svoje Indijce jrčil marsikaj dobrega, a svojega življenja ni daroval za nobenega izmed nas; umrl je in je pokopan, čeprav z velikimi častmi, kakor vsak človek. Isto velja za početnike Isla-ma: Muhamed je storil veliko dobrega za svoja arabska Plemena, toda svojega življenja ni daroval za nobenega iz-^ed nas. Isto velja o početnikih novih, modernih religij, vstevši “New Age” sektov: v kolikor so še živi, jim še na •nisei ne pride, da bi se žrtvovali, če že ne za vse ljudi, VSaj za svoje vernike.
Kako čisto drugačna je postava našega Gospoda Jezusa Kristusa! Da moreza nas trpeti - in nam odpreti ne nara-^na> ampak božja Nebesa -, postane človek. Nikoli ne ne-(L ~ nC more neliat‘ - bit* Božji Sin, in zato lahko trpi se odloči za trpljenje) - za vsakega človeka, tudi zate, m zame. V Bogu je prisotna cela zgodovina, od prvega 0 zadnjega človeka. Koliko življenj je naš Gospod nekoč v šestini ozdravil! Koliko življenj vrnil naravi brez vme-avanja zlih duhov! In kolikokrat je to dosegel z eno sa-mo besedo, z enim samim stavkom! Ni mu bilo treba pa-^ v roke sovražnikov, ki so v svoji surovi, nizki naravi ~^vali trpinčenje nedolžnega so-človeka. Toda nabral je tr-Pjenje tja do umiranje na križu. Ne le da nam odpre ne-asluiena Nebesa, ampak tudi zakladnico neizčrpljivih milo-’ Se pravi resničnih božjih darov.
Naš Gospod je umrl za vsakogar izmed nas; za vsako-liuH ^ed nas ie hotel trpeti, ker je vsakogar izmed nas ist ~ resničn° ljubil. In takšna je božja ljubezen, da je Počasno najgloblja modrost. Božji Sin lahko kot človek tr-* m umre in - vstane od mrtvih! Vstajenje od mrtvih je onem očiten dokaz, da naš Gospod ni le človek, ampak Se *	- človek, ki je le človek, nima moči, da bi
Po svoji smrti s svojo močjo vrnil v življenje; te moči °stavno nima. In zato je Jezusovo vstajenje od mrtvih ^Sodovinski temelj krščanstva kot vere božjega izvora. Ni vere na svetu, ki bi se lahko v tej točki merila s krš-stvom! In z njegovim veselim oznanilom!

Vsi, ki jim je pri srcu MZA, se trudijo, da bi to Veselo Oznanilo zajelo kar se da široke predele, človeštva. Vsi, ki jim je pri srcu delovanje MZA, so za to delo poklicani od samega Božjega Misijonarja. Od mrtvih Vstali je pred očmi apostolov odšel v Nebesa, kjer živi in vlada svet. In odkoder vabi sodelavce — na tisti skrivnosten način, ki je ne le Njegova milost ali moč vabila, ampak tudi naš človeški odgovor ali odziv.
S svojim misijonskim sodelovanjem na poseben način uresničujemo človekovo poslanstvo na zemlji - uresničujemo ga v večjo božjo čast. Posebno v misijonskem sodelovanju, ki je posebno očitna oblika ljubezni do bližnjega. Velika noč je za MZA vsakoletno potrdilo njene božje poklicanosti. Kako bi si upala oznanjevati srečo, pravo srečo človeku - brez žarkov Jezusovega vstajenja od mrtvih? Kako bi ne mogla nadejati božje pomoči pri svojem mnogovrstnem delu -, če bi ne imela svojih oči uprtih v Jezusa v Nebesih? In še bliže kot so Nebesa - v Jezusa, ki je sveta mašna Hostija!
Prvo Petrovo pismo je bilo napisano tudi za MZA, posebno naslednji odlomek: “Slavljen Bog in Oče našega Gospoda Jezusa Kristusa! V Svojem velikem usmiljenju nas je po vstajenju Jezusa Kristusa od mrtvih prerodil za živo upanje, za nepropadljivo, neomadeževano in nevenečo dediščino, ki je v Nebesih shranjena za vas, katere božja moč po veri varuje, da boste dosegli odrešitev... Bodite tega veseli!” (IPet I,l:3-6) Bodimo tega zares veseli - sam Kristus nas po Božji Besedi vabi v veselju, posebno na Veliko noč, na Veliko noč za MZA.

Slovenska Istra in izzivi časa

slavlji (Koper, Izola, Piran in del hrvaške Istre).
Tedaj se je tudi dokončno izoblikovala sedanja slovenska zahodna meja, ki je bila sankcionirana z mednarodnimi sporazumi. Z razpadom Jugoslavije pa je bila v Istri izvršena nova razmejitev in sicer med Slovenijo in Hrvaško, ki pa še ni zaključena zaradi spora okrog meje na morju.
Medvojne travme Slovenske Istre in hiter povojni razvoj
Kot prostor na prepihu in stičišče romanskega in slovanskega sveta je Slovenska Istra tudi ob drugi svetovni vojni doživela velike travme.
V desetletjih fašističnega terorja se je okrog
120.000	Slovencev iz tedanje Julijske krajine, vključno z Istrani, zateklo v tujino (v Jugoslavijo, evropske države in Argentino). Po 2. vojni pa so se s priključitvijo k Jugoslaviji iz nje izselili Italijani in so se tako o-balna mesta, v katerih so živeli, skoraj povsem izpraznila.
Zaradi gospodarske stiske ter nedemokratičnosti povojnega komunističnega
režima je Slovensko Istro tedaj zapustilo tudi okrog 5000 Slovencev, ki so se izselili v Italijo in prekomorske države. To je bil za naš prostor pravi potres, ki je pustil za seboj demografsko opustošene kraje, sesuto gospodarstvo ter razbite in zagrenjene družine.
Nove oblasti so se tega zavedale in sredi 50. let je stekel hiter proces ponovne poselitve in gospodarske rasti, z Luko Koper kot lokomotivo tega vzpona. Razvoj je bil tako hiter, da je presenetil celo njegove načrtovalce.
Sledila je krajša kriza ob razpadu Jugoslavije, vendar je ravno to obalno področje med prvimi začelo dajati znake ponovne oživitve z doseganjem nadpovprečne stopnje rasti. Med razlogi so prav gotovo tudi obmejna lega, vitalnost prebivalstva, večja količina denarja, ki se preliva čez mejo v obliki italijanskih pokojnin kot tudi zaslužki več tisoč ljudi, ki dnevno odhajajo na tako ali drugačno delo v Italijo. Seveda ne gre zanemariti tudi dohodkov, ki jih ob meji pušča stalen pritok italijanskih turistov.
Ne nazadnje je delovala sproščujoče in mobilizacijsko tudi ustanovitev slovenske države, preobrazba družbene lastnine. -prehod na tržno gospodarstvo, odpravo nedemokratičnega sistema in . -sprejetje evropskih norm demokracije in spoštovanje človekovih pravic. Tako je danes Slovenska Istra s svojo gospodarsko močjo in številom prebivalcev tretji največji urbani konglomerat Slovenije, za Ljubljano in Mariborom.
Zato ni nič nenavadnega, da se na tem prost&r ru ustanavlja tretja ^ univerza. s čemer se uresničuje veliki sen naših prednikov o slovenski -univerzi ob morju. Vanjo se že sedaj, ob njenem ustanavljanju, stekajo tudi naši rojaki iz Italije. S tem se bo Primorska na nek način tudi oddolžila Trstu in Gorici za vse. kar je od njiju prejela v-preteklosti.
In ob skorajšnjem padcu meja ter ponovni reintegraciji obeh mest z naravnim zaledjem, je moč upati, da si bo njuno, od preteklih travm oslabljeno slovenstvo spet opomogla.

Dne 2. aprila je na domu svoje hčerke v Deer Parku, Texas, umrl 88 .-let stari Joseph J. Lavrich mi. (Shine), vdovec po 1. 1984	-
umrli Regini, roj. Bacdde-wicz, oče Richarda, WiHia-. .< -ma in Susan Blansett, .-6-krat stari oče, 4-krat prastari oče, brat Josephine Stu-pak, dve sestri sta že pok.,, ko je živel v Clevelandu je za 24 last lastoval in vodih ' Wildwood Park Boat Livery in bil prvi lastnik Shines Live Bait, vnet ribič. Podrobnosti o pogrebu niso ' bile posredovane.
