Prav ti so postali nedolžne žrtve teroristov. RIM, It. Jasir Arafat zapustil Tripoli — Že obiskal Egipt — V Izraelu spor o politiki Šamirjeve vlade do odhoda Arafata in njegovih borcev KAIRO, Eg.; TEL AVI V, Izr. Že omenjena dela so se izvrševala predvsem v sami tiskarni, razen dela električne napeljave, vendar so bili aktivni drugi »prostovoljci« v pisarniških prostorih stavbe. Mizarji Louis Lončar, Stan Krulc, Viktor Tominc, Matt Tominc, Matt Grdadolnik, Viktor Kmetič, John Kozina, Tony Koželj in Valent Kavčič so medtem na novo razdelili in obnovili pisarniški prostor v štiri ločene pisarne in sicer tri v pritličju in eno na prvem nadstropju, kjer se sedaj nahaja urednik slovenskega dela Ameriške Domovine. Položili so nov pod, vdelali nova vrata. Tisti, ki so pomagali pri tem delu, so: Stan in Ronnie Rus, Steven in Tony Rus, Ivan in Ivan Rus ml., Tone Rus, Leo Omahen, John Hočevar, Albert Frank, Louis Bajc, Viktor Brožič, Andrew Kozjek ml., Tom Žnidaršič, Mike, Tom, Tony in Ben Košir, Mark Zakrajšek, Matt Lončar, Stan Zalar, Stan Krulc ml., Jože Gaser, Tom Kmetič in Jennie, Frank ml., David, Magda in Monika Kogovšek. Vsi ti so prostovoljno delali na tem projektu. Letošnji Koledar prinaša veliko zanimivih razprav, spisov, spominskih obletnic in pripovedni del. Med važnimi zapisi beležimo obletnice ob 20-letnici avtonomne dežele Furlanije Julijske krajine, ob 40-letnici padca fašizma in ob dvajsetletnici 2. vatikanskega cerkvenega koncila. Posebej zanimivi sta razpravi o lipi in nageljnu kot simbolih v slovenski zgodovini. Pomemben je članek o Trin-kovem simpoziju v Rimu, kjer so Slovenci pokazali vsemu svetu tega velikana duhovnosti V BLAG SPOMIN obletnice smrti naših dragih staršev 33. obletnice smrti našega dragega očeta, starega in prastarega očeta. Mirka Mazore. Franc Medved st. poslal g. Štefanu Maroltu, blagajniku MZA v Clevelandu, Ohio. Tile so darovali: Andrej Perčič st. za bogoslovsko vzdr-ževalnino $250 in $100 za vse misijonarje(-ke). Peter Perčič $100, Angela Perčič $50, Andrej Perčič ml. in Helena Perčič, vsak po $20 in Štefka Perčič $10. Albin Medved $100, Franc Medved st. $50, Marija Bernard $50, John Slavec $50 in Kristinca Zimmerman $50. Naj Bog povrne obilno velikodušnost in dobroto vsakemu posebej! NANOVO SO DAROVALI še: Misses Agnes in Grace Caspar iz Fairfielda, Conn. $20; družina William in Marija Oven-Dempsey, Santa Clara, Kalif. $100, in Marko Oven $500. G. Sankovič, director — Johann Georg Reissmuller Majhen narod se uveljavlja Slovenci v jugoslovanski državi Vodilni jugoslovanski komunisti pogosto obsojajo »nacionalizem« v svoji lastni državi. Sicer niso bili z vsem Zlovoljni, a so svoje pritožbe ,a asno odlagali. Ta politika ni uspela, so dejali nekateri. In addition to their volunteer work, the above mentioned donated $2500 worth of material. The electrical system was also revamped to meet the new needs for power and light; some with the able assistance of Mirko Kristanc who saw to it that it was done. The new press was then moved to its permanent place. The carpenters, Louis Lončar, Stan Krulc, Victor Tominc^Matt Tominc, Matt Grdadolnik, Victor Kmetic, John Kozina, Tony Koželj, and Valent Kavcic, partitioned the office area into four offices, three on the ground floor and one on the second floor. Air conditioners were installed as was linoleum flooring and ceiling and washrooms. The basement, too, needed a lot of work because the large and heavy rolls of printing paper are kept there. The work that remains to be completed includes the installation of some lights, painting the walls, and the remodeling of the front entrance — reception area. If anyone is prepared to donate money or time, or both, please call us. As is evidenced above, there has been a tremendous response from you, the Slovenian community. Your generosity and cooperation made the burden lighter. For that we are very grateful and extend our thanks to all those mentioned above and to all the unnamed and unknown who have contributed in any way. The remodeling of the physical plant has now been virtually completed, and our work is done. This does not mean, however, that there is nothing else to do. The Slovenian community and the American Home are interdependent: One cannot survive wjthout the other. As the lifeblood of the Slovenian community the American Home maintains social, business, and professional relations; it also promotes and preserves our heritage, culture, and language. The American Home shines as a beacon of freedom amongst the darkness for us. Its brilliant light led us or our forefathers out of the darkness. Bathed by its light for many years now, we take it for granted: It will be there tomorrow we think. Accustomed to its daily light we have not noticed that its brilliance is waning, that it no longer illuminates clearly a path amongst the darkness. The beacon of freedom requires eternal vigilance from each one of us: It is our duty and responsibility. You, as freedom loving Slovenians, have always taken such duties and responsibilities attendant to the maintenance of freedom seriously. Your sustaining subscription to the American Home attests to this. At this time, however, your help is needed, too. The American Home welcomes more subscribers — sign up your relatives, friends and neighbors. The American Home welcomes more adver- tising. The American Home invites you to submit articles and news items. Remember, let not the light of freedom be extinguished — Participate! The Committee (EDITOR’S NOTE: It must also be remembered that it was Paul Kosir who organized the entire American Home project from selection of new press to coordinating the volunteers. Memo From Madeline AMLA Performs A Christmas Miracle by Madeline Debevec On Monday morning of this week, Father Victor Tome, Pastor of St. Mary’s Church in Collinwood, was extremely concerned and pondered how could he ever find the necessary funds to feed the many needy of the parish. Shortly thereafter the doorbell rang and he welcomed in Louis Boldin, Supreme Secretary of AMLA and Mary Sinkovič, Supreme Treasurer. They presented Fr. Tome a check for $500 to purchase food for the needy of the parish. Needless to say, Father Vic was the happiest person in the world as this miracle took place and he delights in telling of this story with a happy ending. Meanwhile, in the St. Clair neighborhood, Marie Orazem, popular secretary of AMLA St. Anne’s No. 4, presented Fr. Joseph Boznar, pastor of St. Vitus Church, also a check for $500 for the needy of the parish. Marie reports that this is one of the most desperate years for the poor of St. Vitus Church. These kind and generous acts prove the leaders of American Mutual Life Association, AMLA (or SDZ) are following in the footsteps of their founding fathers by caring and sharing in the welfare of their fellow Slove- * * * On New Years Day the Ensemble Tone Zagar will perform in a concert at 5 p.m. at the Slovenian National Home, 6417 St. Clair Ave. Music at 8 p.m. will be provided by the Hank Haller Orchestra. He was recommended by many people.” Coyne said Paik will assume the deputy registrar duties as soon as final clearance is received from Columbus. Bernard Lavrisha and Kesty Kizevicius Show Exhibits in Jan. Two Cleveland artists will be featured in the January exhibit at Lake Erie College’s B. K. Smith Gallery. Kesty Kizevicius and Bernard Lavrisha, whose work will be on display, consider themselves, “First generation bicultural artists.” They explained they were raised in two different cultures. They first experienced the Eastern European culture and language of their parents as small children, and were then assimilated into the American culture as school children. This experience has made them acutely aware of different value systems and ways of seeing things. “Never Empty Lessons”, the title of their exhibit, implies that something is always learned, whatever the intent of the experience. Bernard Lavrisha’s works range from sculptural to painting. He describes them as symbolic, using sign and symbol to evoke a response. He explains they deal with harmony and movement, the movement being the spectator walking around the artwork. When asked about one of his pieces, “Everybody Wants a Piece of the Pie”, he explained that it is “simply observing how people function, and concreting it in a symbolic gesture.” He called it a “satirical metaphor”, using pie shapes and other forms in a formal structure to represent an individual’s drives for status and acknowledgement. The public is invited to meet the artists at the opening reception, Friday, Jan 6, from 7 to 10 P.m. The exhibit will be on display Jan. 6 - 28 in the B. K. Smith Gallery, Lake Erie College, Painesville. Gallery hours are 10-6 daily, 2-5 weekends. The B. K. Smith Gallery is located in the Fine Arts Building on the Lake Erie College Campus. Parking access is available from Gilette St. Two Slovenians in National Geographic Two prominent Slovenian American aviators are mentioned in the December issue of the National Geographic magazine (circulation almost 11 million). They are Max Stupar and Dr. August Raspet. “Stupar was a pioneer builder of improved Demoiselles, used in early American exhibition flights,” writes Prof. Edward Gobetz in “Readers Forum,” commenting on Louis Marden’s article, “The Bird Men,” that had been published in the August issue. On the second prominent Slovenian pioneer Dr. Gobetz writes, “Dr. Raspet was a foremost researcher and designer of sailplanes and lightweight motor-driven planes and inventor of the flying bicycle.” As so often in the past, the Slovenians have not been Enjoying Ann’s 50 year in the floral business Stanley Petkovšek, Anne Slapnik Petkovšek Christmas Party at her establishment, 6620 holding great-granddaughter Heather Nicole St. Clair are (left to right) Anne’s grand- Radesic, and polka disc jockey and musicial daughter Cindy Radesic, brother-in-law polka popper Kenny Bass. given the credit they so fully deserve, but the picture is certainly changing for the better. The Euclid Vets also participated in the ceremonies. Frank Jaksic of Brooklyn, New York has retired from United Press International after serving 26 years with the company. He played a major role in communications and purchasing. The UPI staff held a grand party in his honor at the headquarters. He received recognition from the Down-Holders Club during a reception at the Rockefeller Center. Walter Cronkite was among several of the big wigs present. Frank hopes to spend his retirement time enjoying the museums, theaters and cultural life of the city. Frank’s mother Anna Jaksic of St. Clair Ave. is delighted that he will be here in Cleveland during the holidays with his family. May your retirement years be fruitful. Other publications which have gone by the wayside were Polka World out of Nebraska and the Cleveland-Euclid based Polkarama. Thanksgiving Dance Welcomed 2500 Our Cleveland Slovenian Radio Club sponsored Thanksgiving anniversary dance at St. Joseph High School was another big sucess with some 2500 in attendance. A. — If you call the office we can send you a special form for this purpose. You send it t0 Social Security and they’ll send you a statement showing fhe earnings credited to your record since you started work-■ng under Social Security. Q- — I applied for retirement benefits at the Social Security °ffice near my home. Now I want to report a change in my work and earnings. Can I report this information to the pffice near where I’m working? A — Yes. The Social Securi-(y office is like your bank — each branch is a full service office designed to handle the full range of services. Q- — I plan to keep working as long as I can. Someone told me there is a rule that increases tt'y benefit if I delay retire-ment past 65. Is this true? A- — Yes. Delayed retire-ment credits of 3 percent a year are payable for each year after age 65 that you do not collect retirement benefits. Q. — What about back cnefits? I understand I can Set retirement benefits for Months before I apply under some circumstances. How “Oes this work? , ^— Up to 6 months of back ettefits may be paid under pertain circumstances, “enefits will not be paid for tfionths before the month you aPPly if they will result in per-Jhanently reduced benefits, he result is that back benefits te paid primarily to people 5 and over. Ask your Social ccurity office for more actails on this rule. , V— I heard that the law has een changed so that Social purity benefits won’t be ad-JUsted to make up for increases in the cost of living. Is this true? A. — n0> this isn’t true, owever, there may be some , hange in the way the increase figured. A new law provides' j, at if the assets of the Social ecurity system fall below a ertain amount, the benefit in- crease, now payable each January, will be used on the lower of the increase in wages or prices during the past year. Until recently, the increase in prices was considered a fair way to keep the “buying power” of Social Security benefits stable. But in the past several years, prices have gone up faster than wages, so people getting Social Security benefits and some other government benefits — got more protection against inflation than workers. The change in the law was made to correct this situation. The new law provides a “catch up” provision. When the amount of money in the Social Security trust funds rises to a certain level there will be an extra benefit increase to bring benefits up to the level they would have reached if all the increases had been based on prices. So, the new law is balanced to protect the workers who pay for Social Security, people who get benefits, and the Social Security program as a whole. Q. — Is is true that the Social Security earnings test has been changed so that I won’t lose $1 in benefits for each $2 I earn over a certain amount? A. — There has been a change in the law, but the change won’t take effect until 1990. Beginning with that year, Social Security beneficiaries age 65 or older who work and earn more than a certain amount will lose $1 of benefits for each $3 of “excess” earnings. Q — I am 64 years old and have been divorced for 15 years. I am unable to work and would like to get Social Security benefits based on my ex-husband’s earnings. But he is 67 and still working. Can I get Social Security benefits, even though he hasn’t applied for them yet? A. — Yes, starting in 1985. Q. — I’m single and will start getting about $700 a month in retirement checks when I’m 65 in January. The Social Security people said $500 monthly earnings from a part-time job won’t affect my payments. But will some of my benefits be taxable? A. —- No. Since your total 1984 countable income will be only about $10,200 ($4,200 for half your benefits plus $6,000 wages) — well below the $25,000 base for an individual, no benefits are taxable. Q. — I have a lot of outside income in 1983 in addition to Social Security benefits. Will I have to pay any tax on benefits when I file my return in early 1984? A. — No. The new provision is effective for taxable year 1984. If an extra tax is due, it should be reported on the return you file early in 1985. (If you are self-employed or retired, however, you may have to file estimated returns in 1984). Q. — My wife and I expect roughly the same income for 1984 as we have for 1983: about $40,000 adjusted gross income (mainly rentals); $2,000 nontaxable interest income; and $12,000 from Social Security. About how much extra taxable income can we expect for 1984 because of the new tax provision? Postal Card Honors Baraga A. — Your adjusted gross income plus nontaxable income plus one-half of the benefits totals $48,000, which is $16,000 over the $32,000 base amount (assuming you file taxes jointly). However, since one-half of your benefits ($6,000) is SMALLER than one-half of the excess over the base ($8,000), $6,000 is the amount of your additional taxable income for 1984. U.S. postal authorities plan to honor Bishop Frederic Baraga, the Roman Catholic missionary known in Michigan as the “Snowshoe Priest,” with a commemorative post card next year. While the Postal Service is not expected to make an official announcement of the special post card until mid-1984, the office of Rep. Robert W. Davis, revealed the plans recently. Postal Service acknowledgement of Baraga’s contributions has been sought for about 30 years by a group of Michigan residents, including, the Upper Peninsula-based Bishop Baraga Association, and officials in the Catholic Diocese of Marquette. Born in 1797 in Slovenia, Baraga was ordained in 1823 and spent several years as a priest in Europe before volunteering for missionary work among the Indians of the New World. He first worked at Harbor Springs, then established the first Indian mission at Grand Rapids in 1833. Two years later, he established a Chipewa mission near Lake Superior. Ordained bishop of Marquette in 1853, Baraga was responsible for the spiritual welfare of the entire Lake Superior region. Baraga reportedly gave sermons in several languages and wrote religious treatises in Indian dialect. Many of his congregation called him the Snowshoe Priest because he traveled extensively by canoe and snowshoes. The Baraga post card is expected to be one of only three or four to be issued in 1984, according to Davis’ aides. Florida Slovenes News The American Slovene Club of South Florida held its meeting on Dec. 4th with a fair crowd. We have as officers for 1984 the following: Erna Kotula, president; Frances Vraničar, vice-pres., Paula Beavers, treasurer and a good one I might add; Mamie Willis, recording sec’y. Trustees are Dick Flynn, Frank Kotula and Paul Tucker. Sgt-at-arms is Bill Zupank. Our sick list is extensive with Nancy Gasparič, Ned Girlan-do, Mary Nagode, Dorothy Glinšek, and Marge Slogar slowly but surely recovering. A good many are infirm and do not attend any more. We do miss them. It seems that is the norm for a good many clubs. Age takes its toll, and members somehow just do not come any more. We are having our Christmas dinner party at a restaurant for the first time. We have always in the past had our dinner party and gift exchange at the clubroom. We will, however, have a New Years dinner in January. We are pleased to report the SNPJ No. 2 group is coming in March. We are certainly looking forward to it. Just know it will be entertaining as they were at the testimonial for our Tončka Simčič. I, for one, can hardly wait. It was nice to see the Bohinc’s and the Glinseks return for the season. Many more are due next month. We wish you all a Merry Christmas. May your hearts be light and gay and the new year be wonderful as never before. High blood pressure is a leading killer because of its silent and slow assault on various organs. Untreated, high blood pressure (hypertension) leads to stroke, heart failure and/or kidney disease. Luckily, it can easily be detected in such screenings. The blood pressure test is a painless one. Most health professionals recommend having blood pressure checked at least yearly, if not more often. Nurse Marsha Kuhar and Registered Emergency Medical Techncian Tim Snyder will be conducting the tests for Sheliga Drug. Mrs. Kuhar is Director of Nursing at Salvation Army Booth Memorial Hospital in Cleveland. Mr. Snyder is currently pursuing graduate studies in psychology at Cleveland State University, and he is a part-time employee of Sheliga Drug. Mrs. Kuhar’s husband, Bogomir, is staff pharmacist at Sheliga Drug for the past two years. He and owner Joe Sheliga, organized and are supervising the blood pressure clinic. Also cooperating is the Ohio Department of Public Health. All participants will receive a recorded card of their personal reading as well as other educational materials related to health. Those with elevated readings will be referred to their own physicians for another blood pressure check and further evaluation. The clinic will not serve to diagnose high blood pressure, but only to screen those individuals who may possibly have elevated blood pressure.
