Thanks to Dorothy Dybzinski Announcement Concerning Slovenian Property Restitution American Consul Paul Cantrell in Ljubljana, Slovenia, is taking an interest in the property restitution Problems American citizens have with Slovenian authorities. He advised that he will in the near future take the matter up with some Slovenian government officials. The consul wrote that it would help him if he had lnformation on how were specific cases resolved, how many claims were denied, what obstacles claimants are encountering, what settlements, if any, were offered to them, and if any of such settlements are considered fair by the claimants. We wrote that Consul Cantrell is taking considera-b,y more interest in this problem than his predecessor and we greatly appreciate his activities. Family Link Found via E-Mail Recently I received an e-mail from a young lady in Slovenia who had seen my computer request for any information concerning my maternal grandparents surname Grošelj from the village of Šmartno v Tuhnju near Kamnik in Slovenia. She told me she was married to a Grošelj and was also researching that name, from the same village. I was so thrilled to get that e-mail that I answered her immediately. We continued to write back and forth every day and compare documented facts that we each had. Our conclusion was that our Grošelj s and her Grošelj s were definitely related many generations back. She offered to visit the Archives in Ljubljana for me and get me certificates that I needed for my research and records. We ^also shared other pictures and documents that we had regarding our family. Our friendship grew stronger as we continued to send e-mail letters and pictures back and forth more frequently. At one point I asked her if she had ever visited the United States. She said she and her husband have been thinking about it. I told her we would love to have them visit us, so we would have the opportunity to meet and also to share more pictures and facts about our families. Shortly after that she told me she was checking out airfares, and she asked my opinion on the best time to visit Cleveland. I suggested the end of August and the month of September. I also told her we didn’t have the room to have them stay with us but we would help them find a motel that was close, and we would be thrilled to show them Cleveland and surrounding areas if they came here. To make - a long story short, we picked them up at Cleveland Hopkins Airport on Sept. 17th. We knew the time they were due in, but didn’t have a flight number. It wasn’t important because we spotted each other immediately. You can’t imagine what a thrill it was to welcome my Slovenian e-mail friend Urska, her husband, Igor, and their 4-year-old son Vasja to Cleveland. We gave Vasja a flag of Ohio and also our beautiful US Stars and Stripes which he so proudly waved. Both Urska and Igor spoke excellent English but Vasja spoke only Slovenian. With my “Po-pa-half Slovenian” and a typical grandmother’s love, Vasja and I had no problems communicating. During their stay we toured all of Cleveland, the Flats, the Lakefront, Cleveland Clinic, University Circle, etc. They visited several museums, I-Max Theater, Burton’s Sugar House, and Bisson Farm, Amish Country, Cleveland Zoo, Six Flags, and even drove to Pittsburgh to meet another Grošelj family. The last weekend they were here they drove to Canada and visited Niagara Falls and drove all around Lake Erie to return back to Cleveland. They were amazed at the beauty of our country, and the well maintained parks and flower plantings. The time went so fast. There was so much to see, but not enough time. We all feel like we have known each other for years. Our friendship is so strong and warm and it got richer each day we shared together. They have invited us to Slovenia, however, I doubt that we will ever be able to make it again. If only we could turn back the clock and be 10 years younger. But we will always be together in shared e-mails, pictures, and our shared genealogy research. Igor told me he never dreamed he would be here in the United States, and he will be back. Saying good-bye to our newly found e-mail friends and relatives was a sad one for all of us. But we have many wonderful memories and another link in our Grošelj family genealogy. After much shared research it turns out that Igor is my fourth cousin once removed. -Virginia (Marinko) Pinkava Mayfield Hts., OH AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA, OCTOBER 16, 2003 2 AMERICAN HOME AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA 6117 St. Clair Ave., Cleveland, OH 44103-1692 Telephone: 216/431-0628 - Fax: 216/361-4088 AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA (USPS 024100) James V. No. 41 October 16, 2003 MEFiecreom BVMmr Colorful Fall Season by RUDY FLIS I I spent this past week on our beautiful highways, or I should say I saw beauty and color through the windshield of my car as it traveled our highways. Bright colors and colors like a whisper, they were so soft looking, reflected into my eyes. What a blessing the sight was. I was not the only one in my family enjoying the burst of fall colors. My oldest daughter, Mary, drives many miles each day, and this past Tuesday she called her mother, Therese, to let her know her odometer had just hit 22,000 miles. Mary got the same lecture I did at 100,000 miles, “Keep your eyes on the road.” -That’s my wife, Therese, the sensible one. Twice this week I drove 1-71 to Ashland, Ohio, and Mansfield, Ohio. What beauty! Also, it was twice I drove Rt. 422 to Warren and Youngstown, Ohio. Heading east is an experience. My eyes dare not blink, as they feed my soul the beauty that is fall. It lasts and lasts, ending only when replaced by the buildings of man, great to live in, but lacking nature’s beauty. Once in Warren, there’s some colorful trees, but mostly street signs, asphalt streets, and billboards and marquees with advertising. One such marquee had some words of wisdom for all to read, “Stretching the truth doesn’t make it last longer.” I parked my car and took a break from driving. As I sat, I reflected on my two rides on Rt. 422 this past week and the colorful foliage. I am a blessed man as you know, but how blessed I am I must tell you now. At the end of each trip I was able to say, “Thank you” to the waitress at the “Hot Dog Place,” where each day I consumed two chili dogs with onions and a chocolate shake to wash it down. Aren’t I lucky. Even more lucky, I am going to Warren on Monday, testing some new product, made in Slovenia, and I will again eat two chili dogs with onions and a chocolate milk shake. The 3 day event at the Marriott Hotel at Key Center has been going on in the downtown area of Cleveland for 14 years, but really started 40 years ago in 1963. For polka fans it’s as traditional as the Thanksgiving turkey dinner. Polka musicians and fans individually and by bus hail from such states as Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Tennessee plus Canada to name a few, but also from all of Ohio and Greater Cleveland. Twenty organized polka bands perform with a spotlight, too, on the tarn-buritza (Slavic string instrument), a “touch of Italy,” and the diatonic button box accordion. In addition tq regular dance sessions and dance contests in the hotel ballroom, regular jam sessions take place in the side Erie-Superior room. On Saturday, Nov. 30 at 2 p.m., the focus is on the National Cleveland Style Polka Hall of Fame at the Euclid, Ohio High School Auditorium on East 222nd Street for the spectacular Awards Show XVI. At one time, Simončič Bakery on E. 68 and St.Clair Ave in Cleveland had the best bread. Unfortunately, Simon&c went out of business. Nosan’s Bakery at E.64th and St.Clair also had good bread BUT it was just not the “domači kruh” from my childhood. What to do? Try the Internet! First location on the Internet was www.dobartek.hr. a Croatian site. Their recipe called for flour, yeast., salt, water and oil. Another Croatian site, www.fenilkenonurija.hr had the same ingredients and also added sugar. A Slovenian site, www. kulinarika, net, contained the same recipe, as did www.inteiblod.com/cveka1nica. which added milk as an ingredient. A recipe on a web site from “Kuhinja Gospe Božic” at www.alesb.siol.net specified olive oil. Another Croatian site at www.klukas.hr recommended that water be brushed on the crust after the baking is completed. The last Slovenian site, www, panex.sif added caraway, coriander and anise. . A, It’s tune to try some of the recipes. The problem is that yours truly has only tried to bake one other time, baking a cake with frosting on before it was placed in the hot oven. ■V Do you have a recipe of your own for “domači kruh”? Life in the Refugee Gamps by ANTON ŽAKELJ translated and edited by JOHN ŽAKELJ Monday, Aug. 4, 1947 I went to see Dr. Janez regarding pains under my ribs. He said I probably have ulcers and I need to go for an X-ray at the hospital. Tuesday, Aug. 5,1947 I was at the hospital from 9-12 a.m. The X-rays confirmed that I have ulcers. Dr. Janez promised to try to arrange some better food for me. Wednesday, Aug. 6,1947 Our friends Tomaz and Dora arrived for a 2-day visit from Feldkirchen. Saturday, Aug. 9, 1947 Franc brought some bark which we used to cover our leaking roof. We accompanied Tomaz and Dora to the train station. We used the station’s scale to weigh ourselves: Tomaz and Dora weigh 121 pounds each. Cilka is 132, and I am 143 (down from 150 two years ago). Back at the camp, we listened to a representative of the Yugoslav Repatriation Commission, who explained some new incentives for people to return to Slovenia. It looks like about 6 - 10 of my lacemakers will accept the offer. Sunday, Aug. 10,1947 We went to Mass at 8 a.m. in the camp chapel, and then 10:30 in Judenburg. A number of people from °ur camp played in a chess tournament against people from the Murdorf camp. The score was 15:1 for our camp. - Mire was the only one from our camp who lost a game. Monday, Aug. 11,1947 Seven of my lacemakers are preparing to return to Slovenia. I calculated how much I owed them for their work and paid them. They seemed very satisfied. But I heard that someone wrote an anonymous letter to the IRO director, complaining that I don’t pay my lacemakers well, that I don’t treat them well, etc. Tuesday, Aug. 12,1947 I asked Mr. Buohsel, in the camp work office, to conduct an investigation of my lacemaking business, to address the complaints. He assigned Mr. Kien to talk with each of the lacemakers. Wednesday, Aug. 13, J947 I drew some special lace designs for the lacemakers whp will be returning to Slovenia. Thursday, Aug. 14,1947 At 7:30 a.m., 39 people left the camp to return to Slovenia, including the following families: Gaser, Jensterle, Kejžar, Thaler, and Weber. Since this includes 7 excellent lacemakers, it may mean the end of my lacemaking business. I feel almost as bad as when my sister Mioi and my brother Joze left earlier this year. Friday, Aug. 15,1947 Today is the holy day of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the afternoon, Cilka and I walked to the church at Maria Buch for litanies. On the way back, we stopped at an inn to drink beer and cider. Saturday, Aug. 16,1947 I waited in stores and butcher shops almost all day to buy food for our room. Prices have risen 25 - 50% this month, and there are still shortages. Sunday, Aug. 17,1947 Today was the second chess tournament between our camp .and Murdorf. This time, they won 15:8. Wednesday, Aug. 20,1947 Miss Vercic invited me to visit her lacemaking class. I agreed to pay her to teach the girls in our camp the art of bobbin lace. I received approval from the camp administration to receive a fourth of a liter of milk each day, based on the doctor’s recommendation regarding my ulcers. I will also buy some milk from a farmer in Murdorf. Monday, Aug. 25,1947 I went back to the dentist regarding my false teeth. Thursday, Aug. 28,1947 Cilka is sewing the leather uppers for 30 pairs of shoes. I am helping her. Friday, Aug. 29,1947 Another trip to the dentist. I received a letter from my brother Joze in Slovenia. He says our brother Ciril had a bad accident, in which he broke part of his backbone. (To Be Continued) IP "TTie' 8 arid' Keepy on/ PlayCn#'!" Hey, time for a joke and I just got this one from an old military officer I served with who is now retired in Mexico. Maybe the joke is meant for those over 85. Here goes: Maxine was standing at the railing of the cruise ship holding on to her hat tightly so that it would not blow off into the wind. A gentleman approached her and said,. “Pardon me, madam. I do not intend to be forward, but did you know that your dress is blowing up in this high wind?” “Yes I know,” said the lady. “I need both hands to hold onto this hat.” “But madam, you must know that your private parts are exposed,” said the gentleman in earnest. The woman looked down then back up at the man and replied, “Sir, anything you see down there is 85 years old. I just bought this hat yesterday.” Okay, here is a joke for the young ones. A father was approached by his small son, who told him proudly, “I know what the bible means.” The father smiled and said, “What does the bible mean?” The son said, “It stands for Basic Information Before Leaving Earth.” Well, let’s get back to the old homestead and back to the middle 1950s which perhaps was the beginning of things going downhill. Unfortunately, we had five lots including the lot that the house was built on and even then when dad was not making a fortune working for the railroad, paying property taxes was a burden, and then word got out that they were going to pave Bennington Avenue. “Holy smoke,” time for dad to do something, for if he thought the taxes were bad before paving, God forbid what they would be after paving, and he lost no time in selling three of the lots “dirt cheap,” selling the lots for S200 each. When we look at things today, even in that neighborhood, the lots are getting $10,000. Maybe it was a blessing in some way, for in selling the lots, we had to give up the garden which mom hated to part with, for now there would be no more "home-grown tomatoes, beans, lettuce, and potatoes. Maybe things fell in place, for it was just about then that my younger sister got married, and as it was with all daughters, the parents have to pay the wedding bills. Dad was as proud as a peacock when he walked Irene down the isle of Annunciation church. With bookings of the J.D.N. Hall being full, the wedding reception had to be held at the VFW in the Puritas area but it was a nice wedding. Holy smoke, now we had the big house with only mom, pop, and I, and with no sisterly help, 1 had that much more to do around the house, but then I had nothing else to take up my time. I tried to get dad to fix up the home more, but he kept saying it was good enough for his dad, good enough for him, and it should be good enough for me. With such logic, how can one fight city hall? In the late 1950s I had purchased a beautiful outdoor redwood picnic set, huge round table that was over eight feet in diameter with four curved benches. It was nice and I hated to see it just sit in the back yard on the lawn, and suggested that we build a round concrete patio under the huge cherry tree. The idea appealed to dad, so now it was a matter of digging out the dirt, perfectly round, bigger in circumference than the table and bench set. No problem, even got some light stones to act as a foundation for the concrete, and that was when the trouble began. There was a huge concrete outfit up on West 130th, near Stop Twelve. However, when dad tried to place the order, he soon found he was out of luck. They could not deliver any concrete to any home owner for any reason, for all the concrete within the county had to be diverted to the building of the Ohio Turnpike; they had top priority. Here we were with a beautiful picnic table set, redwood at that, and no foundation to put it on. Well, I guess one had to know my dad, for he was a wheeler and dealer and when he made up his mind that this patio was to become a reality, nothing could stop him. Dad went out and bought a bottle of Canadian Club whiskey and followed one of the cement trucks down West 130th. It was headed for the new turnpike, due south. Dad tooted his car horn and signaled the driver to pull over. Dad approached him and said he was aware of the fact that all the concrete had to be delivered to the turn- pike, but showed the bottle of Canadian Club to the driver and said, "Just maybe you can see to it that a couple of yards of concrete is left in your truck when you return to be refilled.” “No trouble,” said the driver with a grin and within an hour, the concrete truck pulled into our drive. Once again, Dad was as proud as a peacock, for now he had the concrete delivered to our home. It was poured, just enough to complete the job. The brother-in-law who was a mason, was able to level it off and it looked great, and in a couple of days we would be able to place the redwood table set on the new patio. But, low and behold, someone left the back door of the house open and out came the dog, the cocker spaniel “Jersey,” and as sure as God made little green apples, he trotted right into the newly finished cement. Pa called that dog every name under the sun and I kept telling Pa that the dog’s name was “Jersey.” “Pa, don’t yell; the dog doesn’t know any better. He doesn’t know it is wet concrete.” “What the hell do you want me to do,” dad said, “Put up a sign saying WET CEMENT, DOGS STAY OFF.” Dad was fit to be tied, but first we had to tie up “Jersey,” and fortunately it had not hardened completely, and with wetting it down, we were able to trowel out the dogs prints. Our Father who art in heaven, please keep Jersey off the newly poured concrete patio. Well, in a couple of days it was dry. Jersey was able to have his freedom again and we enjoyed many a meal eating on the new concrete patio, and it only cost a bottle of Canadian Club and a few words that were not Christian aimed at the dog. It goes without saying that perhaps we were the envy of the neighborhood with a round concrete patio for the picnic table set, for in those days, people did not even have concrete drives. As the years passed by, I kept after dad that we should sell, get out of the neighborhood and move into the suburbs, get a brick house where there would be no scraping and painting to do. Guess he got tired of my nagging and finally said, “Okay, we will try to sell.” What can l say? I know I had to do a lot of praying for someone to btiy that house for it was well, over 50 years old, and not a closet throughout the entire house. To my readers, all I can say is have faith, pray God does hear our prayers, but I am afraid you will have to wait for the next column to hear the House Selling Sage. Yet now with hind sight, if I knew what was in store for us, I would never have pressured the idea of selling, for that had been dad’s inherited home for well over 50 years and anyone who has lived in a home for over 50 years knows that you don’t just pack up and move. Success is failure turned inside out, The silver tint of the clouds of doubt, And you can never tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems so far, So stick to the fight when you 're hardest hit, It's when things seem worst, That you must not quit. Groundbreaking ceremony for St. Mary of the Assumption (Collinwood) parish community center took place on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003, after the 10 a.m. Mass concelebrated by Bishop Roger Gries and pastor Rev. John M. Kumse. After the liturgy, a large number of parishioners and friends walked in procession to the north end of the school for the groundbreaking activity. After blessing the grounds by Bishop Gries, Cleveland Councilman Michael Polenšek gave a short talk on the merits of continuing to improve the parish and thereby strengthen the neighborhood. Pictured above turning over a ceremonial golden shovel full of dirt are, left to right, Madeline D. and James V. Debevec of The Frances and Jane S. (Photo by PHIL HRVATIN) The Collinwood Cars Connection by JOE GLINŠEK Aside from the fact that I’ve always been interested in cars, they also have a Collinwood connection. From 1897 through 1932, there were 82 ‘marques’ made in Cleveland. Some lasted several decades, while others survived for less than a year. Both the Chandler and Cleveland were made in a plant on Euclid Avenue near London Road. Also, Fisher Body had a major stamping plant at Coit and East 140th and employed many before they closed shop in 1982. From their early roots as ‘coach builders’ for various auto makers, they went on to become a Division of GMC in 1926. Neither Dad nor Grandpa could drive. Uncle Mike owned the first car in our family. His 1941 Pontiac Custom Torpedo four-door sedan purred with the unmistakably smooth sound of a ‘straight eight.’ IPs no wonder that this car was still in stock at the end of the model year, late in the summer of 1941. Dark blue with a dove-gray top and every available option, it cost $1,300 - big bucks in 1941, and no bargain. A Cadillac, three steps up the GM price chain, could be had for about $1,500. However, the Pontiac proved to be a most fortunate purchase. New cars were soon to be gone “for the duration” - three little words often heard in the war years ahead. It had a push-button radio with power antenna, a rear window wiper, and an umbrella in a case fitted under the dash. These were unusual options in 1941. Pontiac did not yet offer a Hydra-Matic transmission, but a custom interior, turn signals, oil fib ter, heater, defroster and whitewall tires were also included, so there was little else to add - this car was “loaded!” I was almost 12, and fooling around with the new car while Uncle Mike was at work. Grandpa, who was retired and always at home, was very restrictive about certain things and remarkably permissive about others. He didn’t mind at all that I was starting the car in the garage and moving it back and forth a couple of feet to get the feel of the clutch. One day the steering wheel turned a bit, and I was stuck with the rear fender just rubbing the swing-out garage door. Moving in or out was going to be bad news. Too close to the wall to exit the car on my side, I slid out the passenger side to survey my dilemma, then pulled back inside while turning the wheel slightly left. The fender wasn’t dented, but it had rubbed the edge of the door and left a streak of gray paint across the length of the dark blue fender. In a sweat, I removed the streak with rubbing compound and just to cover my tracks, I Simonized the entire car by working like a demon before my uncle got home from work. He was pleased and surprised with my thoughtful gesture. The car was gleaming, and never the wiser, he gave me a buck. Grandpa kept my secret and never squealed on me. My first car was a 1928 Jordan, the same as our neighborhood “bootlegger” used to drive, but there the resemblance ended. For one short summer I was a very minor partner/owner of this shabby and much used car that ran quite reliably. Stan, a slightly older friend who lived nearby, found this treasure at a bargain price but was short $15. I cleaned out my ‘off-shore account’ hidden in a Half & Half tobacco tin in the garage and ‘we’ owned a car. The proceeds from my part-time job at Fishers, lawn-mowing jobs on Holmes Avenue, and proceeds from selling scrap to the ‘peparegz' were all in that tin. (I saw one of those telescoping tobacco tins at an antique show a while back, and the empty can was worth more than mine full of money!) My cash had to be hidden. If Mom saw more than a bit of pocket change, she’d whisk me off to Cleveland Trust to put it in a savings account. We were very lucky. Neither of us had a driver’s license, and we borrowed tags from Stan’s older brother, but we were never stopped by police. Stan kept the car at his house and we had some nice afternoons driving around Metropolitan Park when we could scrounge up the gas money. A flat tire on the split-rim required the services of a garage, so our fun didn’t last long. Stan sold the Jordan at a small profit before gas rationing started in December, 1942, and paid me back with a couple of bucks to spare. (To Be Continued) AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA, OCTOBER 16, 2003 AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA, OCTOBER 16, 2003 Gene March helped build this retaining wall in Gates Mills during the Depression. Gene March and Gates Mills Stone Walls Coming Events | by CECILIA DOLGAN Accomplishments are sometimes etched in stone, so that is one reason why Mayfield Heights resident Eugene March enjoys driving along River Road in Gates Mills, Ohio. Sixty-five years ago he helped build four retaining walls in the village of Gates Mills as part of a Works Progress Administration (WPA) crew. March is proud of the fact that three of the walls are still standing in the picturesque community. The United States was still in an economic depression, and March had been laid-off from his job at Chicago Pneumatic Tool. When he heard WPA was hiring, he headed for the sign-up site and stood in a mile-long line. He was lucky to get the job, although it was for three days a week and paid $60 a month. “The guy hiring said, ‘Report to Gates Mills, top of the hill at County Line Road,’” recalled March, now a spry 86. “We were given wheelbarrows and shovels to repair the berm.” That was in April of 1938. Within a week, the foreman asked if anyone had experience as a bricklayer. March’s father was a bricklayer who worked for the Collinwood Shale and Brick Co., in the Collinwood neighborhood of Cleveland. Eugene said he could do the job and was promoted to mixing cement for the boulders that were set in place to hold back the land along the road. The new job paid $71.50 a month. At age 21 he was the youngest person of the 10 men building the wall, and he says probably the only one still living. “You like to go back and see what you have accomplished,” said March, on a recent visit to the sites. The wall March is especially proud of runs 150 feet in length, and is from two to five feet high, located on River Road, about 200 yards south of Brigham Road. Another shorter wall is on Riverview Road, and a third wall was near a polo field. March said, “I can point to some evergreens we planted along the road that are still there, but they’re big now. We planted more trees at SOM Center Road and Cedar Road.” There were 40 to 60 men recruited to work in Gates Mills through the WPA project, said former Mayor Dan Collister. Collister, who served from 1987 to 1995, is a lifelong resident of Gates Mills, and has studied the minutes of village meetings dating back to 1923. “I am aware of a lot of the good project works,” said Collister, 75, who is president of the Gates Mills Land Conservancy. “The workers did a lot besides building retaining walls. They cleaned up and cleared the boulders and debris from the old dam. You can still see some of the boulders at the present dam near the center of the village. “I studied the period in the 1930s, and people suffered great hardship and poverty in the village, too.” The WPA program was created in 1935 by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and provided jobs for about 814 million unemployed people, mainly in building highways, streets, bridges, parks and other projects intended to have long-range value. March said he worked with WPA until the Fall when he was called back to his job at Chicago Pneumatic. In 1942 he was drafted in the U.S. Army and served in World War II for three years. His wife, Marie, of 61 years, died in April. “Life is great when you look back,” said March, who works part-time at Nook Industries in Cuyahoga Heights. “I worked most of my life as a gear generator. I don’t know where the thousands of gears have gone. But the wall is still there, and I’m proud of that.” Help Wanted Good help to keep a clean house clean. 440-333-1933 Stimbur^fs Accounting Accounting & Income Tax Services 496 E. 200th St.. . The ability of BENECOL to lower cholesterol has been supported by more than 25 studies, and the Food and Drug Administration has recognized that plant stanol esters in BENECOL may lower the risk of heart disease when part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol. Here are some healthy recipes that can make lowering cholesterol enjoyable: Chicken with Ginger Plum Sauce 6 servings 2 tsp. finely chopped fresh ginger 3 large cloves of chopped garlic 2 tbsp. hoisin sauce 2 tbsp. plum sauce 1 tsp. sesame oil 1 tbsp. rice vinegar V* tsp. crushed red pepper flakes 6 tbsp. BENECOL (regular) Spread 6 chicken breasts, (I'A lbs.), boned and skinned % tsp. salt and freshly ground black pepper, mixed together 3 cups hot cooked couscous 1. Combine ginger, garlic, hoisin sauce, plum sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar and red pepper flakes. Whisk until well blended. What you spread on your bread can lower cholesterol. Pour into ovenproof baking dish. 2. Preheat oven to 400'F. Sprinkle chicken with salt and pepper. 3. Melt 6 tbsp. BENECOL Spread in large nonstick skillet over high heat. Add seasoned breasts to skillet and cook until golden, about 3 minutes. Turn chicken over, cook 3 minutes longer. Place chicken in marinade in baking dish. 4. Noticed Rudy Flis and Ray Mlakar writing about seeing the movie, “Secondhand Lions.” Well, earlier ''s year I saw some lions •Jrsthand. They were at the mGM Grand in Las Vegas talking around in a glass enclosure. MGM uses lions as a trademark at the opening 0 their movies so they car-ned that theme to their Las e§as casino. Part of the 'nick glass was on the lion en roof where people could Str°ll through the passageway with a lion sleeping 1 Ve them. Neat-o. There a ways were big crowds gathered to watch lions do absolutely nothing. I read this week that some dentists are putting mon-eys to work using their /ajns. Miguel Nicolelis, Ph.D., put tiny im- plants in the monkeys brains and thereby trained them to move a robot arm with their THOUGHTS. Researchers hope one day to allow paralyzed people to perform similar tasks. All right! And last year I read a “bird brain” story about a New Caledonian crow which used its intelligence to solve a problem to get food. The bird, “Betty” by name, was given the job of snagging a piece of meat from a tube using either a hooked wire or straight wire. Thinking it over, she always picked the hooked wire and snagged the morsel. Amazingly, one day the New Zealand crow’s male partner threw the hooked wire away. Undaunted, Betty took the straight wire and BENT it so she could grab the food. She did this much to the astonishment of the scientists. I personally can attest to the cleverness of crows as I i discovered when as a youth at Debevc’s farm in Madison, Ohio. John Turek and I would be in a cottage next to a com field with a flock of crows sitting in the trees nearby, watching us very carefully. We’d open the door and walk put w ith a broom, pretending- it was a rifle. We’d even aim if at the birds, and they just sat in the trees or in the com field pecking away at the com-on-the-cob (without butter, of course, as they seemed to be watching their calories). We did this to get the crows used to us aiming something at them. They just chuckled and kept on eating. Eventually we’d go back into the cottage and emerge hiding a real rifle at our side. “Caw, caw," they’d scream and go flying away. How' they knew the difference betw-een a broom and a rifle," to this very day, we’ll never know. Yet, they did it every time! To get back to the movies from which we digressed, Madeline and 1, and mother, Dorothy Urbancich, saw “Under the Tuscan Sun” starring Diane Lane a few weeks ago. We all thought it was an excellent film and could sympathize with the heroine while she was overcoming her various plights. The mission of the HELP Foundation, Inc. is to insure children and adults with mental retardation and developmental disabilities have the homes, environments and opportunities to be valued members of the Northeast Ohio community. From what I remember about Bobby Grden was that he was a friendly soul who was somewhat mischievous. Aside from appearing to be impish to the youth of the neighborhood, he was cordial and gentle toward housewives as he traversed the neighborhood in search of adventure. He was a visitor at unexpected times and at unexpected places. His main trips outside the neighborhood were with his father who chauffeured him, his brother Ray and some of us friends to Edgewater Park for a summer dip into Lake Erie. His older brother Ray would protect him within reasonable grounds. However, Ray was in school, had a paper route and was a terrific athlete, which kept him quite busy. Bobby’s nature was one of being a childish, jolly fellow who would charm the ladies to gain favors of goodies and other delicacies. His girth was slightly larger than most and he had the ability to become a bit ornery at times. His reputation preceded him as many youngsters avoided him out of apprehension. He had a certain swagger that was rather noticeable when he walked up and down the aisle during Mass.' The peddlers and the grocers anticipated possible prankishness when he was in the romantic comedy that poked fun at lawyers and gold-diggers. But we went through a situation that probably neither Rudy Flis nor Ray Mlakar experienced. - We were wanded (just like at the airport) and the ladies’ purses were searched. It happened because we went to sneak previews and the movie personnel kept emphasizing that no cameras were allowed. They were looking for hidden tape recorders. All this goes to show, the animals and birds are getting smarter, while humans are getting scarier. He was not much of an athlete as the coordination skills were just not there. He went to what was considered a “Special Education” school, and upon reaching adolescence he more or less kept at home without many outside social activities. He remained with his sister after his mother’s death and worked in a sheltered workshop. In 1988 he moved to Six Chimneys under the care of the Help Foundation. It is instructive to recall that many of us had proverbial nicknames. He was always referred to as “Bobby Grden,” either affectionately, nostalgically, or out of respect. He also always called others by their first and last names. He came from a large family of Louis and Mary, as the last of a line of brothers and sisters, including: Mae, Ann, Louis, Bernice, Bill, Dorothy, Ray, then Bobby. God bless him and may Our Lord have mercy on his soul. —Joseph T. Kids Need Enough Sleep To Do Well In School (NAPS)—Most young children need at least nine hours of sleep each night. That’s an important message to keep in mind. Getting enough sleep each night, like eating right and being active, is essential for our minds and bodies to function at their best. In fact, according to the National Center on Sleep Disorders Research (NCSDR) at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, sleep appears to be required for survival. Studies have shown that total lack of sleep for just two to three weeks can result in death. When we get less sleep than we need each night—(even one hour less)—we develop a “sleep debt.” If the sleep debt grows too big, it can lead to problem sleepiness— sleepiness that interferes with our ability to carry out our daily activities. Even if children do not feel sleepy, the sleep debt still has a powerful negative effect on their daytime performance, thinking, and mood and can result in their falling asleep at inappropriate and even dangerous times. Problem sleepiness has serious consequences—it increases the chances of accidents and injuries. And it can interfere with children’s performance in school, on the playground, in extracurricular activities, and even in relationships. A child who does not get enough sleep each night is more likely to have symptoms of physical and/or mental problems. The child may have difficulty concentrating or even fall asleep in school. Sleepy children can exhibit learning and behavioral problems. They may become agitated, rather than lethargic, and may be incorrectly thought to be hyperactive. Not getting enough sleep is one cause of problem sleepiness. Undiagnosed/untreated sleep disorders can also cause problem sleepiness. The NCSDR recommends that you talk to your pediatrician if your child has any of the following: loud and frequent snoring, breathing pauses during sleep, problems with falling asleep or staying asleep at night or staying awake during the day, or unexplained problems with daytime performance. For more information, you and your child can visit the NCSDR’s Garfield Star Sleeper Web site at http://starsleep.nhlbi.nih.gov. i AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA, OCTOBER 16, 2003 ŠKA DOMOVINA, OCTOBER 16, 2003 Roster of Organizations — Imenik društev — ST. News From Slovenia Stock Management Under Fire The Securities Market Agency (ATVP) has launched a procedure against the management of the Ljubljana Stock Exchange (LJSE) in an attempt to strip members of the LJSE board of their licenses. The securities watchdog suspects that a total of 566 fictitious deals were concluded (all but nine stock-brokerage firms were involved) over which the LJSE management failed to properly carry out supervision. Also named among the suspects are several legal entities that are no longer members of the stock market, LJSE director Draško Veselinovič told the press. The LJSE management, which believes there are no reasons for such a measure by the STVP, said it would respond to the allegations within 30 days. Zdenko Podlesnik, the head of the LJSE supervisory board, meanwhile stressed that the ATVP procedure could affect investor confidence and jeopardize the capital market. ATVP head Neven Borak said the agency has firm evidence and stressed only individuals have been targeted, not banks and stock brokerage firms as the bourse management has claimed. « Round-the-clock Radio in Carinthia Representatives of the Slovenian minority in the Austrian province of Carinthia and the Austrian state broadcaster ORE reached an agreement on a round-the-clock radio program in Slovenian. M. A. Delo fax, 14. okt. Sicer pa mora vladna komisija v zvezi z omenjeno konkretno lokacijo posredovati še podatke o geografski širini in dolžini mesta postavitve enotnega spominskega znamenja in podatke o številu žrtev. AD). Anton Trstenjak, uspe kak slovenski rojak. Če se tak rojak ob svojih večjih uspehih živo zaveda tudi svoje večje odgovornosti do bližnjega in še posebej do slovenske skupnosti in pri vseh do-. sežkih ostane povsem naš, domač in prijazen, potem je njegov osebni uspeh tudi resničen dosežek vse slovenske skupnosti. Eden takšnih slovenskih uspešnikov je naš rojak Pavle Košir, ustanovitelj in predsednik uglednega podjetja PAKO, Inc., ki letos praznuje 30-letnico uspešnega poslovanja in napredka. Pot, ki sta jo prehodila prijazni in vedno povsem domači Pavle in njegova tvrdka tovarna PAKO, Inc., nas upravičeno navdaja z veseljem, spoštovanjem in ponosom. Le mesec dni pred graduacijo so ga devetnajstletnega s vpoklicem v vojsko oropali zaslužene diplome. Lep del potrebnih strojev za, ducate v katalogih navedenih procesov so Pavle in v tovarni zaposleni mojstri izumili in izdelali kar sami. Vsi prostori so svetli, arhitektsko privlačni, izredno čisti in prijazni, prav nič podobni temačnim tovarnam, kjer smo si včasih služili vsakdanji kruh. Oba, Pavle in njegova žena Cilka, • sta vedno povsem domača in prijazna do vseh in vsakogar. V letu 2000 so podjetje PAKO počastili z nagradama “Quality Performance Supplier” in "Supplier Excellence Award”. Velepodjetje General Electric je leta 1991 s .posebnim priznanjem počastilo PAKO za dvajset let uspešnega sodelovanja “on the occasion of the 5000th CFM56 engine built”, in spet s priznanji za leti 1992 in 1995. za leto 2002-2003 pa s “Supplier Excellence Award”. Z umno integracijo uprave, inženirije in proi-vodnje PAKO ves čas svojega delovanja dosega in mnogokrat presega zahtevna ameriška in svetovna merila za proizvajalce letalskih in kopnih sistemov turbin. Isto gotovo velja 2a posodobitev prostorov in popravljanje in zamenjavo strojev Ameriške domovine, kjer so Pavleta vpisali v “Permanent Scroll °f Distinguished Persons”. Hvaležni in ponosni rojaki! Cleveland, Ohio Tel. 216-641-0046 Moderni pogrebni zavod. Ranjence smo poslali 2 delom 71. Opoldne sem referat prekinil in nadaljeval popoldne. 18. 11. 1944: Dopoldne sem referiral še predsedniku Ljubljanske pokrajine generalu Rupniku. Manjše akcije 23. do 27. 11. 1944: Te dni ni bilo nobenih večjih pokretov. 28. 11; 1944: S 16. in 28. 29. 11. do 2. 12. 1944 šo bile manjše akcije v okolici Stične. Zdravstveni pregledi so zelo važni. Lep in hvaležen pozdrav!” Papež je rekel: “Rožni venec me je spremljal v trenutkih veselja in preizkušenj. Mnogo skrbi sem položil v to molitev in v njem vedno prejel okrepčilo in tolažbo.”
