Your attendance at one or both services stated your feelings for Frank J. Lausche, and the ideals he expressed and lived by for 94 years. It was our pleasure to coordinate this event and provide another avenue for the parish community of St. Vitus and broader community to come together to worship and enjoy each other’s friendship, and companionship. Debevec Bishop Edward Pevec at the unique 11 a.m. Mass in St. Vitus Church last Sunday, began his homily by saying, “On Nov. 14, 1895 Frank J. Lausche was born and the world was never the same.” During his half-hour remembrance of Frank J. Lausche, Ohio Governor George V. Voinovich repeatedly told the 320 persons at the lunch in St. Vitus auditorium, that the now deceased Slovenian statesman was “The pathfinder.” He told how Lausche paved the way not only for Slovenians, and other ethnics, but he was the first Catholic to hold many prestigious public offices in Ohio. The subject of all of these tributes was Frank J. Lausche, former U.S. Senator, Ohio Governor, Cleveland Mayor, and Judge. People from all over the state came to reflect upon the merits of the famed politician. Judges August Pryatel, Ron Šuster, Ralph Locher, former mayor Ralph Perk were there, as well as Ed Jerse, newly-appointed State Representative, former Councilman Bob Novak, and many other outstanding dignitaries. The President of KSKJ, Gene Kogovšek, and President of AMLA Stan Ziherl, were there, along with a host of other organizations and distinguished individuals. But the day was also a |I was very lucky to have knjown Senator Frank J. Lausche. He helped me many times when I needed his help to get my family to this country. He was so proud to be Slqvenian. He wanted to help tribute to everyone at the banquet, and all those who filled the church at Mass. That Sunday morning, a sudden storm had come in from the west dumping sleet and hail on the roads. Whiteouts were everywhere. The highways were littered with dozens of smashed cars, facing every which way. But, undaunted the people came. Gene Kogovšek asked me, “If the Senator were here this afternoon, what would he have said?” The answer is, he would have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love, and tears would have formed in his eyes and run down his cheeks. He would have been amazed that so many people had risked their health, their cars, and driven through real treacherous weather conditions to be at the 100th commemoration of his birth. Every one of the people who came to one or both of the remembrances last Sunday are life’s unsung heroes. This Thanksgiving weekend, we are deeply thankful to every worker who contributed in some way to the overwhelming success of the Lausche salute. To each and every one who came, we will not forget your true thoughtfulness, and appreciate your coming and sharing your recollections of our wonderful Slovenian hero: Frank J. Lausche. his fellow Slovenians. He asked for nothing in return: A simple “Thank You” made him happy. 1 will never forget what a great person he was. By Clifford Anthony Sun Scoop Journal A decrepit wall on Lake Shore Boulevard that some residents called “crummy” and “dirty” has become the focus of admiration, thanks to the voluntary services of a Collinwood student who painted a mural on it. Robert Mills, a Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School senior, spent the entire summer transforming the 20-by-20-foot eyesore into a work of art. Robert, 17, said that it took him about four months to finish the mural which reflects the theme of the neighboring store. Sonny Shores, which provided him with the oil paint. In fact, the Brazil Road resident said it was the store owners, aware of his love of painting, who asked him whether he would be interested in refurbishing the wall located next to the store at 17700 Lake Shore Blvd. “They said they will buy the oil paint,” Robert said. “I thought it is better to paint a mural.” Three sketches were made so that the store owners would have a choice. They picked the sketch that depicted its activities aesthetically, Robert said. The mural depicts a bright sun, which symbolized the store name “Sonny,” two boats with fishes on a hook, reflecting the fishing items sold; and a cash box with “Lottery” written on it, deftly indicating the availability of lottery tickets at the store. “It took four months to draw the mural,” Robert said. “The wall was dirty and you couldn’t tell what was painted on it. I had to scrape everything.” With a borrowed ladder, he started painting the background and slowly added other details. “I didn’t have scaffolding and I used a regular ladder,” he said. “I didn’t fall and I was OK.” Robert, who has been painting landscapes since he was 9, said he volunteered to paint. “This is my first mural. It was challenging but I liked it.” After graduation, Robert said, he plans to join the Cleveland Institute of Art to pursue a career in painting. Amy Trenton, co-owner of the store, said she was surprised that Robert came forward to paint the mural free of charge. “The wall,” she said, “was crummy and the paint was chipping out. I don’t know what was painted, but it looked something like the Euclid Beach. Definitely it was an eyesore.” Trenton said she asked Robert “to do something about it (the wall). He came up with the mural idea. It looks nice and it brightens the area. Robert is the grandson of Robert and Marcie Mills, stalwart, active leaders in the St. Clair-St. Vitus community. At a height of 15.75 inches it measures 28.35 inches around. It is estimated the vine is 240 years old. It may have produced as much as 265 quarts of mošt. It is on Korošak family’s property in Gornja Radgona. In observance of 100 years of movies, the Slovenian Cinematography is presenting 15 works of Rainer Werner Fassbinder between Nov. 2 and 17. Dr. Lojze Berce died the day before his 97th birthday. He was well known as a Slovenian reporter. Fifteen-year old Maša Pregare was awarded the Linhart golden badge for her acting. She has appeared on stage and radio. We congratulate the budding Slovenian actress from Dolina and wish her success in her ensuing career. University Professor Dr. Milan Komar received the Jose Manuel Estrada award for his work in Philosophy. The honor was conferred on him by Archbishop Cardinal Antonio Quar-racino of Buenos Aires at a formal ceremony. Smith Eddie Simms stood amid the chaos in Johnny Tocco’s downtown gym (in Las Vegas) and breathed in the glorious, sweaty scene. Grinning in his element, alert and bobbing, he wore a sports coat redder than any noseblood. Eddie was as friendly as a small-town mayor and as talkative as an auctioneer. He pulled me aside, squeezed my hand and reminded me of the time he fought the great Joe Louis. And suddenly we were there. It was in Cleveland, you know. In ’36. Eddie went the better part of one round against the Brown Bomber. Got hit with a lucky shot on the temple, he said. Louis delivered a lot of lucky shots in those days. Went blind for more than one hour, Eddie said. Told the referee he wanted “to go take a walk on the roof.” The fight was stopped, but Eddie recovered. Tough Eddie Simms always recovered. Through 205 professional fights, 97 recordings as an impresario of the accordion, bit parts in movies and long years spent as a union plumber, he was nothing if not resilient. As many times as I heard the Louis story, and a dozen other chapters in his oral history, I never got over the awe of how this tough old guy loved life. Some people dine elegantly on expreience. Their palate is so refined that they would not deign to eat with their fingers. Others pick at life’s plate. Their tastes are bland and are reflected in certain pallor of the psyche. Eddie Simms was a gourmand. Born in 1908, he lived every minute of 87 years. He died of heart failure a week ago. His family suspected that the true cause of his demise was a broken heart after losing his wife of 42 years. But it will go down as natural causes. Eddie was born and raised in Cleveland, where he was undoubtedly the best accordionsqueezing boxer of all time. Eddie fought Louis, Max Baer and scores of lesser men. He was known as a game slugger who could take two, return one and outlast most opponents. That was in his prime, but every fight fan knows that prime never lasts. By the time I met him, he wore the history of the fight racket on his face. His visage was a topographical map of every bucket of blood saloon and smoky auditorium that became the birthplaces of the best brawlers of boxing’s golden era. Eddie’s eyelids were heavy, his eyes fogged with cataracts, his nose almost too flat for glasses. Some of his teeth had been displaced since the FDR administration. Then there were the hands. Eddie’s mitts were as broad as bricks with knuckles that had dented 200 faces. Those fists remained formidable well into his 80s. As proof that he wasn’t washed up, Eddie put on weekly shows at senior citizen centers. “I like playing for the old people,” Eddie said. He was past 80 at the time. “They used to say about me, ‘He rocks them to sleep both musically and pugilistically,” he said. They used to call Eddie a lot back when he was a quality journeyman heavyweight with a ferocious reputation for toughness. The sports writers loved Eddie with his boxing gloves and jumping accordion. They called him plenty when he was cutting scads of polka tunes for RCA Victor, Columbia and Brunswick. Gifted with a face that launched a thousand hooks, they called him from Hollywood when they needed a guy with a felonious profile. Eddie liked the movies and the records, but the offers didn’t last. He lived quietly in Las Vegas off and on for more than 30 years, only occasionally appearing in newsprint. When he wasn’t playing accordion, he liked to drop in on fight trainer Johnny Tocco and reminisce. Don’t misunderstand; Eddie Simms wasn’t punchy. Far from it. His battle decorated face and husky voice masked a mind capable of instant recall of the slightest details from fights long forgotten. “In all my fights, I was never knocked down with a punch on the chin,” he said with a pride of ownership of one of the toughest jaws on the planet. No matter how tough life got, he always had a smile, a light step and a sunny remark for people in his life. “It’s nice and quiet,” Eddie would say. “There’s no pain and no strain.” Perhaps because a boxing comeback was improbable at his age, Eddie used his hands to squeeze out jumping tunes from his youth. “I play a thousand songs, all by ear,” Eddie would say, grinning. Simms, a 30-year Las Vegas resident who fought more than 200 professional fights, appeared in more than two dozen classic films and recorded about 100 accordion favorites, did not keep that 1 p.m. doctor’s appointment. Sitting at his kitchen table overlooking the courtyard from his second-story, two-bedroom apartment on St. Louis Avenue where he had lived for 20 years, Eddie Louis Simms died of heart failure late that Tuesday morning. He was 87. “He and my mother (Maria) loved gambling and enjoyed the night life in Las Vegas,” Medd said. “When my mother died a year ago, he started to lose interest in things. Eddie just went downhill after that.” Simms, the last survivor of six children born to Slovenian immigrants, lived a life that wavered between the nearobscurity in which he died and the outer fringes of celebrity in which he reveled. As a boy growing up in Cleveland, Simms, whose family shortened its name from Simončič, played in a polka band that featured his siblings. (The Hoyer Trio). Brother a fighter Simms’ older brother, Frank “Iron Jaw” Simms, also was a heavyweight boxer whose career spanned 17 years. Their sister, Jean Simms Pierman, a softball star, was enshrined in the Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame in 1976. Eddie Simms, who boasted that he remained at his fighting weight of 210 pounds throughout his adult life, made his mark in the pro ring by fighting four men who held or would hold world titles. In addition to the hometown loss to Louis, Simms fought one-time heavyweight champion Max Baer in an exhibition bout also in Cleveland on April 23, 1935. He also lost a pair of close 10-round decisions to ex-light heavyweight champions Tommy Loughran (July 29, 1935, in Toronto) and John Henry Lewis (March 6, 1936, in St. Louis). Simms, who often posed for publicity photos in trunks and gloves while holding his accordion, also fought tough but relatively unknown contenders like Jack “Buddy” Walker and Lem Franklin. musician, Eddie Simms dies in Vegas EDDIE SIMMS Remembering young Eddie Simms The referee for the Walker-Simms fight, billed as the heavyweight championship of Ohio, was ex-heavyweight champ Jack Dempsey. The Franklin bout drew 10,000 — about 400 of which was paid — and netted Simms a $71 purse. Simms, who was noted for his stiff right jab and crushing left hook, once won 18 straight bouts by knockout. He also once knocked out an opponent in 70 seconds. Louis fight turning point Simms, who regarded Louis as the greatest fighter of all time, became close friends with the Brown Bomber in the 1970s, and often visted Louis at his Las Vegas home until his death in 1981. “The Louis loss was a major turning point for Eddie,” Medd said. “Joe went on to win the world title the next year, and Eddie realized he would have to start looking toward other avenues for his future.” Five years after the Louis fight, Simms retired from the sport and went to Hollywood, where his rugged features, including a fist-flattened proboscis, earned him supporting roles as gangsters and boxers. His films included “Hot Spot” with Lana Turner, “The Sunday Punch” with Dan Daly, “Sailor Beware” with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, “Designing Woman” with Lauren Bacall and “Right Cross” with Dick Powell. Simms often took his accordion on the set of his movies and entertained the cast and crew with polkas and standards. He would make 97 recordings. In later years, Simms would perform Tuesdays and Fridays at the Economic Opportunity Board’s Hollyhock Senior Care Center on North Maryland Parkway. His last appearance was a week before his death. “He brought the people here many hours of happiness with his accordion playing and stories about his careers in boxing and the movies,” said Delia Gonzalez, a coordinator at the senior home. “We’ll miss him a lot.” Tips to young fighters Simms also would go to Johnny Tocco’s Ringside Gym in downtown Las Vegas and regale the up-and-comers with yarns about his days in the squared circle. “He was a gentleman inside and outside the ring,” said Tocco, a veteran trainer of champions who saw Simms fight late in his career. “He fought all the tough guys of his time. “Eddie would come here three or four days a week and make himself at home. He was always willing to show a fighter a thing or two to help him out.” In addition to Medd, Simms is survived by four grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren. The news of the passing of ex-fighter Eddie Simms (Simončič) brought back personal memories of him. When he was knocked out by Joe Louis in 1936 in Cleveland, I hoped that he had not been seriously hurt. The next morning after the bout, I was walking down Bonna Avenue (south of St. Clair, in the Slovenian neighborhood), when I heard somebody call out, “Hey sonny, I want to talk with you.” I was relieved to see it was Eddie. He did not appear the worst for wear after his fight the night before. Eddie then asked me to get him the morning Plain Dealer at the delicatessen around the corner on Norwood Rd. (Happy’s). He gave me some change so I rushed to get the paper and upon returning to his home, he told me to keep the change. It was a good tip for those depression years and I made many a visit to Happy’s with the tip money. I didn’t know it at that time, but Simms with his brothers Frankie and Matt were the Hoyer Trio that was so very popular throughout the U.S. The band recorded almost a lOO Slovenian songs. After the fight in 1936, he soon moved to California where he appeared in movies. SRNOVRSNIK (SRNICK) by Dell M. Mosley Plain Dealer MENTOR — Peter L. Smovrsnik was a well known musician and composer. He was also a machinist with White Motors for 25 years, retiring in 1975. Mr. Srnovrsnik died Saturday, Nov. 4 at LakeWest Hospital in Willoughby. He was 80. He grew up in a musical family: His father played the organ at St. Vitus Catholic Church for 30 years and his mother played the piano. At age 14, he bought an accordion with money he had earned selling newspapers. His mother had helped him save. He took lessons for two years and at age 16, he began playing at parties, weddings and picnics at Pinter’s Farm. At 18, he formed his own band, the Gay Knights, which lasted for a year. He then started the Pete Srnicks Band. As the band grew in popularity, it played at a number of spots, including Twilight Gardens, Green Derby, Slovenian Halls and the White City Bar. After more than 60 years of performing, he still played a little for family, and he enjoyed listening to young musicians play polka music. His three children carry on the musical tradition and all play instruments. He was a member of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Willowick and Musicians Union Local 4. He was a member of the Interna-tional Association of Machinists and Masonic Lodge 17. He was born in Chicago and was a former resident of Willowick. Ryavec of Santa Monica, CA “from a CIA directory.” Despite its ostensibly credible source, the directory is not without flaws, both minor and major. As to the minor ones (which one could possibly readily forgive): the names of Sergij Pelhan and Pavle Gantar are misspelled, and all C’s, š’s, and ž’s in the officials’ names are given as plain c’s, s’s, and z’s. Hardly forgivable, however, is the misinformation as to the actual holders, as of June 1995, of several listed offices. By that time, for instance, Lojze Peterle, listed as deputy prime minister, was no longer in the government. Jelko Kacin is listed twice; as minister of national defense as well as of information. He did hold the latter position in the first Slovenian government, but that ministry was one of the eight abolished in the beginning of 1993 and its functions were entrusted to the Government Public Relations and Media Office, headed by Borut Suklje. After that, Kacin held no position in the government until he was appointed minister of national defense following the dismissal of Janez Janša from that office. Recipe GARDEN FRESH TURKEY STIR-FRY Slice turkey and vegetables ahead of time for fast preparation. Serve over boiled rice. 1/2 tsp. EACH salt, pepper, garlic powder and paprika 3 tbsp. vegetable oil 1 lb. turkey breast cut in 1/2-in. strips I EACH yellow and green peppers, thinly sliced 1 cup snow peas 1 /2 tsp. Italian seasoning 8-10 cherry tomatoes In a plastic bag combine salt, pepper, garlic powder and paprika; mix well. Add turkey strips and coat with seasonings. In a skillet or wok, heat 2 tbsp oil; stir-fry turkey 3 to 4 minutes or until no longer pink inside. Remove from skillet, keep warm. Add remaining oil, yellow peppers, green peppers and snow peas. Stir-fry 1 minute. Sprinkle with Italian seasoning; reduce heat and cook 2 minutes until vegetables are tender crisp. Add turkey and tomatoes. Heat 2 minutes longer until warmed through. Translated by Stane Kuhar, it is herewith provided for the readership of American Home for a better understanding of the Slovenian population living in Carin thia, Austria). The Slovenians in the province of Carinthia are the oldest ethnic group in that part of Austria. They settled mainly south of the river Drau (i.e., Drava) in the valleys of Gailtal, Rosental, Jauntal (Zilja, Rož, Podjuna). According to the census of 1991 there are 14,500 persons who colloquially speak Slovenian. Unofficial estimates by representatives of the ethnic group have shown that approximately 50,000 persons use Slovenian as a colloquial language. The Slovenes of Carinthia are politically represented by two organizations: The Council of Carinthian Slovenes (Narodni svet koroških Slovencev-NSKS), and the Central Union of Slovene Organizations (Zveza slovenskih organizacij-ZSO). NSKS was elected to participate in the Assembly of Ethnic Groups (an authoritative body consisting of 60 representatives of ethnic groups). NSKS aims at establishing a joint representation on the basis of democratic elections. The first chairman of the new NSKS is Nanti Olip. Mr. Olip teaches religion at a school in Zell-Pfarre. (Note: NSKS is understood to have ideological and philosophical ties with the Catholic church and right-to-center views on the political spectrum.) (On the other hand) ZSO is undergoing restructuring. ZSO is oriented toward acquainting members of the majority (i.e., 7 million Austrians of German descent) with the idea of a multicultural society. (Note: Slovenians comprise less than one percent of the total population in Austria. The leader of ZSO is Dr. Marjan Strum, a historian. Dr. Sturm is chairman of the Advisory Board of Ethnic Groups at the office of the Federal Chancellor. (Note: ZSO is also understood to have had ties to the Slovenian Partisans in Carinthia during World War II). The Advisory Board is composed of representatives of the two central organizations and representatives of the Catholic church and the political bodies. An independent Slovenian party, the United Panel (i.e., List Ednota lista) runs for elections at local and provincial elections. EL members hold approximately 50 seats in municipal councils. In regards to culture, there are two cultural associations: Christian Cultural Association (Krščanska kulturna zvez-KKZ) and Slovene Cultural Association (Slovenska prosveta zveza-SPZ). Both KKZ and SPZ represent about 60 local cultural “clubs,” most being choirs and theater groups (amateur and puppet). Instrumental music is taught at the private Slovene music school which has approximately 300 students. There are three Slovene publishers in Carinthia: (Society of St.) Hemagoras (društva sv. Mohorjeva), Drava, and Weiser. Relative to educational opportunities there are currently five nursery (i.e., pre-school) schools operated by the Slovenes. Recently a few bilingual community nurseries have been opened. There are also 82 primary schools in southern Carinthia that teach two languages; and 20% of the pupils have inscribed. Bilingual lessons in primary schools are available in non-bilingual areas if there are sufficient students interested. As with all other minority nationalities in Europe, the media is extremely important for the Slovenes in Carinthia. There are three Slovene weekly newspapers plus outlet to TV and radio programs. Since 1989 a 30-minute TV program in Slovene (Dober Dan Koroška) — (Good Day Carinthia) is broadcast once a week. About 50 minutes of Slovene radio programs are broadcast every day (via the state electronic media, ORF). NSKS publishes a weekly newspaper: “Naš tednik’’ (Our Weekly), while ZSO publishes a weekly entitled “Slovenski Vestnik” (Slovenian Messenger), as well as the church which publishes a weekly “Nedelja” (Sunday). Other Slovene periodicals are: “Družina in dom” (Family and Home), a monthly in a magazine format; “Mladi Rod” (Young Generation), a school magazine; “Celovški zvon” (a cultural gazette with more scholarly inclined articles that are written by Slovenes from around the world; and “Punt,” a magazine for students. The Catholic Church has established several Slovenian institutions: The Slovene department of religious welfare in the diocese of Gurk-Klagenfurt (current bishop is Bishop dr. Egon Kapelli, who does speak in the Slovene), Catholic Action (Katoliška akcija) with its children, youth, women, and family groups, and Catholic Education organization (Katoliška prosveta). Under the Synodical Law of 1972 an Austro-Slovene coordination committee was established which deals with all conflicts concerning bilingual questions and helps overcome national problems. The Slovenes of Carinthia have had successful! cooperatives for 120 years. The first Slovene credit (i.e., finance purposes) was founded in St. Jakob v Rožu in 1872. Today the Association of Slovene Cooperatives (Zveza slovenskih zadrug) is a mixed association operating on the finance and commerce sector (Note: There are 18 bank branches in eight areas and seven retail outlets in five areas in southern Carinthia under the respective names of “Posojilnica-Bank” and “Zadruga-Market.” Savings deposits were at $65.5 million U.S. dollars as of 12/31/94. The Association of Slovene Cooperatives in Celovec is a member of the Oster-reichischer Rasiffeisenverband in Vienna and holds shares in several import and export companies. The Slovene cooperatives employ about 250 people. Other facts about the Slovenes of Carinthia include the Slovenes Athletic Club (called SAK), and the “Sport-no društvo Zahomec (SDZ) Slovene Ski Association. Many famous ski-jumpers started in SDZ including Olympic champion Karl Schnabl, plus Hans Waller, Hans Millonig, and Franc Weigele. Researchers at Washington State University and Memorial University of Newfoundland recently came up with an answer: herb teas. They tested 14 varieties, from peppermint to chamomile and found that oxalate levels were seven to 32 times lower in herbal tea than in black tea. Pariškega kluba skoraj pol milijardo dolarjev oziroma najmanj 489,2 milijona dolarjev. Gre za dvostranske sporazume, po katerih je Slovenija pripravljena prevzeti del obveznosti do najetih posojil v nekdanji Jugoslaviji. Posojila naj bi se delila na del, ki je bil porabljen v Sloveniji, to je alocirani dolg, in na del, ki je bil porabljen za potrebe nekdanje SFRJ in za financiranje takrat skupne jugoslovanske armade. Od 30. novembra lani do 31. marca letos je Slovenija odplačala Nemčiji 323.200 marka dolga, Švedski 581.500 kron, ZDA pa 1,296,200 dolarjev. Še vedno po zadnjih podatkih ostane najmanj 489,2 milijona dolarjev dolga. V zvezi z dolgom so še vedno številne nejasnosti, vendar naj bi bil alociran dolg skupaj 237,4 milijona dolarjev. Največje na tem seznamu držav Slovenija dolžna Združenim državam in sicer 91,2 milijona dolarjev, sledijo (v US dolarjih) Francija (38,6), Nemčija (35,9), Avstrija (23,4), Nizozemska (17,5), Švica (12,4), Italija (7,3), Belgija (3,9). Manjše vsote od Slovenije pričakujejo Švedska (300 tisoč dolarjev), Kanada (50 tisoč) in Velika Britanija (le 30 tisoč). Tkim. nealočirani dolg oz. dolg do držav, katerih porabniki posojil niso znani, je malce večji, kajti znaša skupaj 251,8 milijona dolarjev. Daleč največ je v tej kategoriji Slovenija dolžna Nemčiji in sicer kar 149 milijonov dolarjev. Sledijo Kuvejt (95), Japonska (6,9) in Norveška (milijon dolarjev). Priprave na obisk papeža uspešno potekajo Pretekli teden so se o obisku papeža Janeza Pavla II. v Sloveniji, do katerega bo prišli sredi maja prihodnjega leta, pogovarjali predsednik Slovenije Milan Kučan, škof Alojz Uran, predsednik pripravljalnega odbora pri nadškofijskem ordinariatu, in minister za notranje zadeve Andrej Šter, predsednik vladnega odbora za pripravljanje pape- ževega obiska. Soglasno je bilo ugotovljeno, da priprave za obisk potekajo uspešno. Pri tem so dodali, da bo prihod v Slovenijo novega apostolskega nuncija, to je mons. Edmond Farhat, gotovo pripomoglo, da bodo priprave tudi v prihodnje potekale uspešno. — Krajše vesti — • Nizka rodnost — Pretekli teden je bila na obisku v Sloveniji delegacija madžarskega ministrstva za zdravstvo. Na tiskovni konferenci je slovenski minister za zdravstvo dr. Božidar Voljč povedal, da je Slovenija šele lani ugotovila, da je umrlo več njenih prebivalcev, kot se jih je rodilo. Na Madžarskem je ta pojav navzoč že žadnjih pet let. Državi sta si podobni tudi pri zelo visoki stopnji samomorilnosti. • Stabilnost tolarja — Za ameriški dolar se dobi okrog 120 tolarjev, za kanadski dolar pa okrog 89 tolarjev. Tečaj US dolar-SIT je dokaj stabilen že več mesecev. • Malo volkov v Sloveniji — V zadnjih 50 letih se je število volkov v slovenskih gozdovih zelo zmanjšalo in jih je danes še živih v Sloveniji največ 20 do 30. Zato je obstoj volkov na Slovenskem ogrožen, kajti menijo strokovnjaki, da je za ohranitev živalske vrste potrebnih od 600 do 1000 živali. V Kočevskem narodnem parku in v hrvaškem Gorskem kolarju ter Liki pa jih ni več kot 20 do 30. Volk je v Sloveniji uradno oz. zakonsko zavarovan šele od leta 1993. • Vrnitev cerkve sv. Jožefa — Pretekli teden je bila formalno vrnjena cerkev sv. Jožefa v Ljubljani Rimskokatoliški cerkvi. Vendar bodo prostori cerkve in bližnjega jezuitskega samostana izpraznjeni šele 5. aprila 1996. Minister za kulturo Sergij Pelhan je dejal, da bo njegovo ministrstvo porabilo 500 milijonov SIT za pridobitev nadomestnih prostorov za filmski studio Viba film, ki zdaj še zaseda cerkvene prostore. • Proti zaprtju — Društva jedrskih strokovnjakov Slovenije se je izreklo proti zaprtju jedrske elektrarne Krško. Med drugim, pravijo, bi bila elektrika, ki bi nadomestila jedrsko, za več kot trikrat dražja. Delovanje elektrarne je, menijo, varno. w m0§ Pretekli četrtek je bila v Zavodu svetega Stanislava v Šentvidu pri Ljubljani slovesna akademija ob devetdesetletnici te ustanove. Na prvi pogled se zdi, da je samo malo hudobna domislica, vendar ni čisto tako. Resnična je z več vidikov. Najprej s tega, da tudi po »koncu komunizma« še naprej obstajajo isti centri moči, ki v veliki meri obvladujejo gospodarsko življenje in javna glasila in se v tej vlogi utrjujejo, kar ima za posledico, da ostajajo vse druge, alternativne politične in idejne sile še naprej drugorazredne, čeprav so po ustavi vse enakopravne. Vendar je še druga plat gornje resnice, ki je bolj zaskrbljujoča in ki nas zadeva vse. Mislim na tistega notranjega pripadnika totalitarnega režima, ki ga nosi vsak v sebi in čigar navzočnosti se niti ne zaveda. To je tista naša moralna otopelost, nerazumevanje vrednosti prave svobode, spoštovanje drugega človeka, ki je drugačen od mene in ki tudi misli drugače kakor jaz, nerazumevanje za svobodno delovanje Cerkve, nerazumevanje vloge staršev pri vzgoji njihovih otrok, nerazumevanje spoštovanja lastnine drugega in pravične delitve dobrin, nerazumevanje neenakosti pred zakonom, enakopravnosti in velikega pomena pravne države. Zdi se, da razen peščice kulturnikov in njim podobnih večina naših ljudi sploh ni zavrgla komunistične državne ureditve in se odločila za demokracijo iz moralnih razlogov. Kaže, da ni zavrgla totalitarizma, ker le-ta ni spoštoval človekovih pravic, ker ni priznaval celovite svobode verovanja in verskih skupnosti, ker ni priznaval staršem, da imajo prvenstveno pravico, da odločajo o vzgoji svojih otrok, ker ni spoštoval lastnine državljanov, ker ni priznaval tistim, ki drugače mislijo in so drugega nazora, državljanske enakopravnosti in enakovrednosti. Bojim se, daje večina mojih sonarodnjakov in sodržavljanov zavrgla komunizem zaradi povsem drugih razlogov. Ne zaradi moralnih razlogov, ampak iz dobičkarske preračunljivosti. Videli so namreč, da se v zahodnih demokratičnih državah bolje živi. Samo po sebi ni nič slabega, če si kdo želi dobro živeti in uživati dokajšnjo blaginjo. Država je celo dolžna skrbeti za gmotno blaginjo in vsako drugo. Zaskrbljujoče postane tedaj, če je to edino merilo, s katerim merimo pravš-njost ali pa neprimernost kake ureditve. Bati se je, da se je tudi večina slovenskih državljanov odločila, da bo spremenila družbeno ureditev samo zato, ker si ji je zdelo, da bo v — vsaj navideznem — demokratičnem ozračju tržnega gospodarstva bolje živela. Za moralne vidike in moralne vrednote, ki jih demokracija zahteva in predpostavlja, pa ni tiste zaskrbljenosti in tiste dovzetnosti, ki bi jo le zaslužile. Minuli totalitarni režim nas je najprej pokvaril v tem smislu, da smo postali nedopustno popustljivi do nekaterih izrazitih oblik nespoštovanja človekovih pravic. Navadil nas je na nespoštovanje človekovih pravic in človekovega dostojanstva. Mladič, ki je prispel na svet v živalskem vrtu, bo poznal samo tisto svobodo, ki obstaja znotraj njegove ograje. Sploh ne vidi, da je z njim nekaj narobe, in da bi moralo biti drugače. Tako tudi danes. Žal, večina Slovencev misli, da je bilo tisto stanje Cerkve, ko je bila zaprta v zakristije in ni smela nastopati v javnosti, normalno stanje. Zato se čudi, da Cerkev ni zadovoljna s tem stanjem, in naseda krilatici, da »Cerkev dviga glavo« in zahteva preveč. V resnici pa vodstvo naše Cerkve ne zahteva ničesar drugega kakor tisto, kar Cer- Fantje na vasi vabimo na svoj celovečerni koncert to soboto, 18. novembra, v Slovenskem narodnem domu na St. Clair Avenue v Clevelandu Pričetek koncerta ob 7. uri zvečer Po koncertu igra ALPSKI SEKSTET Na koncertu bo prva predstavitev naše kompaktne plošče (compact disk) in kaseta: IZ SRCA. Pismo je datirano 7. julija letos, kar je razvidno iz teksta. Sodražica 11.7. 1995 Spoštovani naši rojaki iz so-draške župnijel! Življenje nas popelje in razkropi po različnih krajih naše domovine in širom sveta. Toda vsakdo se rad vrača v svoj rodni kraj k svojim domačim in znancem. Tudi do domače župnije kristjan ohrani določeno vez, čeprav v svojem kraju pripada novi župnijski skupnosti. Zlasti kadar se dogaja kaj novega ali se kaj gradi, to z zanimanjem ali tudi dejavno vključitvijo radi spremljate tudi tisti, ki ste prvi del svojega življenja preživeli v tej župniji in se sem radi vračate. Zato se tudi na vas obračam s tem pismom, v katerem vam najprej tudi želim, da bi se med nami vedno lepo počutili. Že nekaj časa s sodelovanjem župnijskega sveta pripravljamo na gradnjo novih župnijskih prostorov na mestu starega gospodarskega poslopja, v katerih bodo različni prostori za župnijsko delo (veroučna učilnica, kapela za zimske delavniške maše, prostor za razna srečanja in tudi župnijska dvorana). Najprej pa so nas k tej odločitvi priganjali neprimerni veroučni prostori v župnišču. Priprava je prišla do te stopnje, da bomo prihodnji mesec (avgust) začeli z gradbenimi deli, kar boste torej lahko kmalu videli ob svojem morebitnem obisku. Letos bi želeli postaviti stavbo pod streho. (Ur. — Ga. Mira Kosem, ki nam je pismo posredovala in je bila na obisku v Sodražici, njenem domačem kraju, koncem oktobra, pove, da je gradnja že v teku in da je koncem oktobra stavbi manjkala samo streha. Sedaj nadaljujemo s tekstom pisma.) Kratek opis in namen V pritličju bo urejena zimska kapela, veroučna učilnica in prostor za razna srečanja. Ti trije prostori bodo predeljeni le s premičnimi stenami (harmonika) in z njihovim odprtjem nastane en sam prostor: župnijska dvorana. V podstrešju bo mogoče kasneje urediti prostor za srečevanje mladine, Karitas... Posebno mladini je potrebno ponuditi bolj zdrave načine druženja, kot so tiste, ki se ponujajo vsepovsod, saj se razni lokali in disko klubi kar množijo, posledice pa so lahko strašljive. Za duhovno bolj zdravo prihodnost je potrebno mladim ponuditi tudi drugačne možnosti, ki jih ne bodo vodile v omamo in uživaštvo, ampak bi se znali veseliti življenja v vsej polnosti. Tudi primeren prostor za razne kulturne prireditve, razstave in podobno bi bil v kraju nadvse koristen. To delo je za nas gotovo velik zalogaj, saj je v naši družbi kev v Evropi uživa že vsa povojna leta in bi tudi pri nas, če ne bilo komunističnega totalitarizma. Tako smo se že navadili na tisto, kar smo doživljali v letih totalitarnega režima, da preprosto ne vidimo, kaj vse je bilo tedaj narobe. Zato smo tudi tako popustljivi in polni razumevanja, da je v državi veliko primerov nepoštenega ravnanja in kraje tako imenovanega družbenega premoženja, da sodna oblast ne ukrene ničesar, da bi popravila vnebovpijoče krivice in kaznovala zločine, ki so se zgodili v času revolucije in takoj po njej, da so delavci v podjetjih postali povsem brezpravna raja, s katero lahko vodilni kadri počnejo, kar se jim zljubi, da so ob tem eni sindikati nemočni, drugi pa brezbrižni. Mogoče pa je, da ne gre samo za moralno otopelost in brezbrižnost, ki smo ju nasledili od minulega režima. Mogoče je še nekaj hujšega: da smo namreč še vedno prestrašeni. Da nam še vedno zadrhti glas in je potrebno zbrati kar dosti poguma, da kakšno rečemo v obrambo pravice, da se še vedno bojimo posledic svojega morebitnega nestrinjanja s kako potezo tistih, ki imajo oblast, bodisi v podjetju bodisi v državi sami, da še vedno čakamo, da se bodo drugi zganili namesto nas. Toda ravno to je tisto ravnanje, ki je skregano z demokracijo. Kajti demokracija pomeni najprej, da lahko svobodno in neustrašeno nastopamo in izražamo svoje mnenje in svoje zahteve ter se zavedamo, da v demokraciji velja vsak glas enako, posebno pa še, če je utemeljen in če izhaja iz zahteve po pravičnosti. Družina, 12.11.I99S pri cerkvenih objektih treba računati v največji meri na prostovoljne darove faranov. Nekateri bi se mu zato raje izognili. Toda razlogi potrebnosti so bili močnejši, da je župnijski svet sprejel sklep, da se ne odlaša z začetkom. Da bo stavba pod streho, kar bi želeli uresničiti letos, bo po predračunih investicija vredna 17,6 milijonov SIT (211 tisoč DEM), brez stroškov načrtov in druge dokumentacije. Gotovo bi bil tudi kdo od naših rojakov pripravljen sodelovati s svojim darom. Posebno tisti v tujini ste že večkrat tudi na ta način pokazali povezanost s svojo rodno župnijo. Za vsak dar se vam že vnaprej zahvaljujem in naj vam vse dobro Bog povrne s svojimi darovi. Med nami ste vedno dobrodošli, posebno tudi pri skupnem obhajanju bogoslužja. Tudi nova stavba, ko jo bomo mogli uporabljati, naj vas povabi pod svojo streho. Prisrčno vas pozdravljam! Prvič v slovenski medicini Slovenec daroval kostni mozeg Američanu Ljubljana — V sredo, desetega oktobra, je z brniškega letališča z letom številka 1616 odpotovala prek Frankfurta v Ameriko pooblaščena kurirka nacionalnega medicinskega centra City of Hope, Kalifornija, z dvema transfuzijskima vrečkama, polnima kostnega mozga. Slovenski dajalec, petintridesetletni Dušan Bilban spod Šmarne gore, je daroval 1200 mililitrov svojega kostnega mozga bolniku ID 929-312-8. Tipizacija tkiv je namreč pokazala, da je kurjač plinskih kotlov v medvoškem Colorju edini možni dajalec lastnega mozga za nekega moškega na drugem koncu sveta. V nekaterih podedovanih lastnostih sta si namreč enaka, kot bi bila dvojčka. Redek naravni pojav, ki dokazuje, da je tudi v kopici sena mogoče najti iglo, je pravi dragulj v kroni petdesetletnice organizirane transfuzijske službe v Sloveniji. Igra naključja? Niti ne. Če ne bi leta 1991 ustanovili Slovenija donorja z registrom potencialnih darovalcev kostnega mozga, v katerem je doslej vpisanih dvesto ljudi, njihove podatke pa premlevajo računalniki mednarodnega registra, ne bi nikoli odkrili podrobnosti. Kdove kakšna bi bila potem usoda bolnika ID 929-312-8? Prim. dr. Jože Pretnar s Hematološke klinike Kliničnega centra v Ljubljani je komaj nekaj ur po odvzemu kostnega mozga povedal: »Kostni mozeg smo odvzeli danes v zgodnjih jutranjih urah. Deset ur pozneje naj bi ga že presadili bolniku v Kaliforniji. Celice kostnega mozga namreč preživijo pri sobni temperaturi le en dan, zato je bilo treba operacijo časovno uskladiti z letalskim voznim redom. V operacijski dvorani smo se zbrali ob pol štirih zjutraj in čez pol ure je anestezist dal darovalcu splošno anestezijo. Ob pol petih smo začeli odvzemati kostni mozeg iz kosti črevnice v predelu medenice, in sicer na obeh straneh. Postopek je precej dolgotrajen in poteka tako, da z brizgalkami potegnemo kostni mozeg iz kosti, pri čemer lahko naenkrat odvzamemo komaj 5 mililitrov kostnega mozga, pomešanega s krvjo. Da smo dobili več kot liter kostnega mozga, kolikor je bilo potrebno, smo punktirali po dvestokrat na vsaki strani; sicer vedno skozi isto odprtinico, a vsakič na drugem mestu kosti. Zaradi izgube veliko krvi smo opravili avtotransfuzijo, kar pomeni, da je darovalca takoj po operaciji čakala njegova lastna kri, ki so mu jo bili odvzeli pred časom.« JANA št. 42, 17. okt. 1995 Na isti strani je bil tudi ta članek o dajalcu kostnega mozga: Sinu ni mogel pomagati Četrtega oktobra 1991 je Dušan Bilban iz Zavrha pod Šmarno goro privolil v odvzem krvnega vzorca za test skladnosti krvnega mozga. Bil je eden prvih Slovencev, ki so ga vpisali v register možnih darovalcev kostnega mozga tisto leto ustanovljenega registra Slovenija donor. Štiri leta so bili njegovi podatki shranjeni v arhivu Majde Cernčič, glavne sestre Zavoda R Slovenije za transfuzijo krvi, kjer vodijo register darovalcev kostnega mozga. Dati vzorec je eno, darovati več kot liter čudežne snovi, iz katere globoko v kosteh nastaja kri, pa je nekaj povsem drugega. Čakali smo — tudi mi na Jani, kajti obvestili so nas, da obstaja fantastična sorodnost med Američanom in Slovencem. Ali bo pristal? Da ali ne? Dušan Bilban, oče šestmesečne hčerkice Maruše, šestin-dvajsetkratni darovalec krvi, ni okleval. Potem ko so opravili še ničkoliko testov in je podpisal celo vrsto formularjev, je 10. oktobra 1995 postal prvi slovenski nesorodni darovalec kostnega mozga. »Veste,« je dejal, ko smo ga obiskali v bolniški sobi šestega nadstropja Kliničnega centra v Ljubljani, kjer je moral po odvzemu dva dni počivati, »sin mi je pred štirimi leti umrl zaradi redke bolezni, ko je bil star trinajst mesecev. Takrat sem na otroškem oddelku videl, kako trpijo otroci... Življenje je treba gledati realno, in če lahko pomagaš vsaj enemu, zakaj ne bi storil tega.« Plemenitost in skromnost gresta skupaj in šele ko ga je bolnik na sosednji postelji spomnil, naj vendar pokaže svoj zlati znak krvodajalca, je segel na polico ponj.« Ur. — Naj lepša hvala g. Ko bomo ta teden poromali v Lemont, bomo pa še na ameriških Brezjah naročili sv. mašo zanj. Z nabirko bomo uradno končali, a potrebe so še velike in bomo vsak dar za obnovo mariborske stolnice, za obnovo Slomškove domačije in za novo bogoslovje v Mariboru z veseljem sprejeli. Škofu dr. Krambergerju smo že poslali $15.000. Takoj, ko bo potrdil prejem zadnjih $5.000, mu bomo poslali še ostalo. V zadnjem pismu se gospod škof iskreno zahvaljuje vsem dobrotnikom in pošilja vsem svoj apostolski blagoslov. Piše tudi, da te dni pričakujejo delegacijo iz Vatikana, s katero se bodo točno pogovorili o obisku sv. očeta v Sloveniji. O beatifikaciji škofa Slomška še niso bile izrečene zadnje besede, vendar so vsi prepričani, da bo do nje prišlo. Vse so pač izročili v božje roke in v Slomškovo priprošnjo. Otroški praznik, god sv. Miklavža, ima za ameriško slovensko skupnost še prav posebno važnost in pomen, kajti sv. Miklavž nas že v adventu spominja, koliko dobrote je zmožen človek, ki je dobro vzgojen in pravilno usmerjen. Slovenska šola pri sv. Vidu obstoja že nad 40 let. Ves čas se posveča dobri vzgoji v smislu misli našega pesnika in pisatelja Karla Mauserja, ki je pisal, da »ne premoremo večjega bogastva, kot so naši otroci. Več kot 40 let torej je bila svetovidska slovenska šola slovenski zaklad in dragocenost, saj je zbujala v naši mladini narodno zavest in ljubezen do slovenskega jezika, kulture in dediščine. To je tisti dragoceni dar, ki ga bodo otroci ohranili vse življenje. LAVRISHA Attorney-at-Law (Odvetnik) 18975 Villaview Road at Neff 692-1172 Complete Legal Services O problematikah stranke in slovenske narodne skupnosti v Italiji Programska konferenca Slovenske skupnosti GORICA, It. - Tematik, ki so bile obravnavane na programski konferenci Slovenske skupnosti v soboto, 28. oktobra, v Vižovljah, je bilo res veliko število. Na konferenci pod geslom Kako naprej? so referenti in udeleženci vzeli v pretres najrazličnejša področja življenja slovenske manjšine, ki pridejo v poštev pri delovanju stranke. Kot je povedal tajnik Martin Brecelj, mislijo vse posege strniti v programski dokument, ki bo predstavljen ob proslavi 20-letnice deželne organiziranosti SSk, ki bo predvidoma 3. decembra v Kulturnem domu v Gorici. Brecelj je tudi podal uvodni poseg, ki je obravnaval potrebe in zahteve Slovencev v Italiji v novih zgodovinskih razmerah. Dotaknil se je problema rabe jezika, šolstva, kulturnih in športnih organizacij, teritorija, pritiskov in udarcev na račun gospodarskih dejavnosti, zastopanosti v izvoljenih telesih (tu je Brecelj ponovno poudaril zahtevo po zajamčenem zastopstvu, pri čemer se je navezal na pot, ki so jo ubrali koroški Slovenci) in televizijskih oddaj v slovenščini. Štefan Bukovec je spregovoril o dejavnosti stranke v italijanskem političnem prostoru, ki ga, kot je rekel, pretresa huda kriza. V novih razmerah, do katerih je prišlo v Italiji, se mora SSk nujno povezovati z ostalimi manjšinskimi strankami in formacijami v Italiji, pa tudi s Slovencem naklonjenimi italijanskimi političnimi skupinami. Dalje je potrebno vztrajati pri zaščitnem zakonu, saj so Slovenci prešibki, da V BLAG SPOMIN OB TRINAJSTI OBLETNICI 1906 — 1982 STANISLAV MRVA Umrl dne 19. novembra 1982. Si svet Ti zapustil in šel si od nas; pri Bogu pa prosi tam vedno za nas! Zapustil solzno si dolino, se preselil v boljšo domovino, kjer ni žalosti ne skrbi, kjer vse se večno veseli. Žalujoči: Stane in Tone Mrva z družinama Marinka Tominc z družino ter ostalo sorodstvo tu, v Belgiji in Sloveniji. Cleveland, O., 16. novembra 1995. bi lahko svoje probleme reševali postopoma. Zahtevi po zajamčenem zastopstvu v izvoljenih telesih, je še dodal Bukovec, se ne smemo odpovedati. Kar se tiče krajevne samouprave pa je poudaril pomen znanja slovenščine s strani občinskih tajnikov, ki bodo po novem deželni funkcionarji. Poudaril je tudi potrebo po širših programskih smernicah, ki morajo segati na področja sociale, šolstva, urbanistike, zlasti pa gospodarstva. O odnosih s Slovenijo je govoril Ivo Jevnikar. Ugotovil je marginalizacijo zamejskih Slovencev v matici na vseh področjih. V Sloveniji, je dejal Jevnikar, nimajo pojma o naši stvarnosti. Iz tega izhaja nujnost ustanovitve organa - tako pri parlamentu kot pri vladi -, v katerem bi sedeli predstavniki slovenskih manjšin ter predstavniki parlamenta in vlade. Jevnikar je omenil tudi obstoj zakona o enakih pravicah Slovencev brez slovenskega državljanstva, ki pa ga oblasti ne izvajajo. Problem manjšin je treba v Sloveniji senzibilizirati. Matica naj manjšini ne vsiljuje vpisa v določene stranke, po drugi strani pa mora imeti tudi možnost neke kontrole nad tem, kar se v manjšini dogaja. Neka pravila igre morajo obstajati. SSk naj se razgovarja z vsemi slovenskimi strankami; vsekakor pa je lažje sodelovanje s tistimi strankami, ki so pozorne na probleme manjšine, in s tistimi, ki niso podpirale starih sil v Sloveniji. Andrej Bratuž je spregovoril o delovanju na mednarodnem prizorišču. Dejal je, da Evropska unija kaže neko večje politično, kulturno in gospodarsko idealno področje, za katero se moramo zanimati tudi Slovenci v Italiji. Opozoril je na listino o pravicah manjšin, ki sta ju izglasovala Evropski parlament in Svet Evrope. Dokumenta sta, čeprav ne obvezujoča, pozitivna, saj predstavljata dobro politično platformo za reševanje problemov manjšin. Omenil je delovanje Federalistične unije evropskih narodnostnih skupnosti (FUENS) in dejal, da je treba poiskati širše povezave tako v Italiji kot v širših evropskih organizacijah. Kot manjšina imamo pri tem omejeno, a kljub temu pomembno vlogo, vsekakor pa moramo biti realisti. Aleš Figelj se je dotaknil delovanja SSK v okviru slovenske manjšine v Italiji. Pri tem je naštel vrsto točk, od »začasnega« skupnega zastopstva, ki je po njegovem farsa, do primera t.i. Gombačeve »tretje krovne organizacije«, ki jemlje SSk strateški prostor. Glede Narodnega sveta Slovencev v Italiji, ki ga je svojčas predlagala SSk, mora to zadevo stranka zopet vzeti v svoje roke ter sprožiti nova srečanja in akcijo v medijih. Kar se po- litike levičarskih strank tiče, je dejal Figelj, se ta dela - vsaj glede Goriške - krogih Slovenske kulturno-gosopdarske zveze; zato je treba najprej razčistiti pojme s to organizacijo. Cilj SSk mora biti nadalje tudi pluralizacija Primorskega dnevnika, saj tednih ali dvote-dnik ne more odtehtati dnevnika. Figelj je opozoril na težko gospodarsko situacijo v videmski pokrajini, kjer so -tako kot v drugih krajih v zamejstvu - v krizi tiste strukture, ki so živele s podporo mati- ce. Vsekakor je treba ohraniti dvojezični šolski center v Špe-tru. SSk mora imeti dobre stike z naklonjenimi strankami, a naj ne podpisuje bianko menic. Peter Močnik je v svojem posegu o tem, kakšno stranko rabimo, opozoril na oddaljevanje ljudi od politike. Dejal je, da je veliko navdušencev, ki bi bili močan adut za stranko, ki pa jih je težko privabiti v stranko. Bistvenega pomena je ohraniti človeški kapital, ki se je ustvaril po zadnjih volitvah, in povezati stranko z okoljem, v katerem se nahaja. Zavzel se je za uvedbo članstva, politične šole za kadre in dvomesečnega časopisa, mor- da v režiji krožkov Virgil Šček in Anton Gregoričič, ki bi podpiral stališča SSk. Močnik je tudi nakazal potrebo po ustanovitvi konference izvoljenih predstavnikov SSk, kar bi utrdilo povezanost v stranki. Erika Jazbar je spregovorila o SSk in mladih. Opozorila je na neobremenjenost mladine glede ideologij in strankarstva. Po njenem mnenju je potrebna resna konfrontacija, ki vodi v enotnost. Konfrontacija pa ni mogoča brez politične izobrazbe, saj moramo vedeti, kaj hočemo. Nepripravljenost v konfrontaciji vodi v pasivnost in asimilacijo. Poudarila je pomen oblike (dalje na str. 18) V SPOMIN IN ZAHVALO Z žalostnim srcem, a vdani v voljo Stvarnika, naznanjamo vsem prijateljem in znancem, da je duhovno pripravljen, po težki bolezni odšel k Bogu po večno plačilo naš dragi mož in oče, stari oče, brat in stric 1932 1995 JANEZ KOŠIR Pokojni je bil rojen 16. oktobra 1932 v Stranski vasi, župnija Dobrova pri Ljubljani. V Ameriko je prišel leta 1967. Zaposlil seje pri Built Rite Construction Company, in delal do lela 1980, ko je zbolel in bil bolniško upokojen. Bil je član društva Najsvetejšega Imena Jezusovega pri sv. Vidu, društva Slovenskih Protikomunističnih Borcev, Kluba upokojencev Slovenske pristave, in član Pristave, Baragovega doma, KSKJ št. 25 in Slomškovega krožka. Pogreb je bil iz Zakrajškovega pogrebnega zavoda na St. Clair Avenue v cerkev sv. Vida, in nato na pokopališče Vernih duš, Chardon, Ohio. Za njegovo usmeritev je značilen izrazit antiklerikalizem, za liberalno stranko in njeno vodstvo pa tudi jugoslovanski unitarizem, kar je Slovencem nesporno škodovalo v boju proti Beogradu in težnjah po narodni avtonomiji. V prvih letih po proglasitvi kraljeve diktature je bila bivša liberalna (Samostojna demokratska) stranka pasivna. Šele, ko je septembra 1931, po uvedbi oktroirane ustave, kralj na novo organiziral vlado, so liberalci dočakali svoj politični trenutek. Namesto SLS so podprli režim in vstopili v vlado, pri čemer so se jim pridružili tudi nekateri voditelji bivše avtonomistične Slovenske kmetske stranke (Ivan Pucelj, dr. Drago Marušič). Eni in drugi so svojo prisotnost v vladi izkoriščali za obračun z nasprotniki, bivšo katoliško Slovensko ljudsko stranko in levičarskimi političnimi skupinami, obenem pa brezkompromisno podpirali idejo jugoslovanskega unitarizma. Iz protesta do takšne politike so se v drugi polovici leta 1932 s stranko razšli nekateri, sicer pretežno liberalno usmerjeni slovenski izobraženci, ki so do tedaj sodelovali pri reviji Ljubljanski zvon. Neposreden povod za razcep v Ljubljanskem zvonu in med liberalno inteligenco je bil članek Otona Župančiča ob obisku slovenskega ameriškega pisatelja Louisa Adamiča; v njem je Župančič relativiziral pomen jezika za narodni razvoj in razvoj narodne kulture, kar je v razmerah diktature povzročilo vehementne proteste med slovenskimi kulturnimi ustvarjalci. Spor se je še zaostril z napadi liberalne politike na Josipa Vidmarja in njegovo knjižico »Kulturni problem slovenstva«, ki je posebej izpostavljala vlogo kulture in umetno- sti v narodnem razvoju, zavračala »protislovensko« politiko slovenskih liberalcev in ugotavljala, da »narodnost je in bo ostala osnova vsake bodoče preuredbe sveta«. Skupina izobražencev, ki je zapustila Ljubljanski zvon in leta 1933 ustanovila novo revijo Sodobnost, je svoja stališča pojasnila v posebni izjavi, v kateri se je opredelila za »aktivno ohranjanje slovenstva, za intelektualno in duhovno svobodo in pravičnejšo, socialno harmoničnejšo ureditev družbe in sveta«. »Sodobnost« je v tridesetih letih dejansko postala ena osrednjih slovenskih, svobodomiselno in narodno usmerjenih revij in je v drugi polovici desetletja svoja vrata odprla tudi levičarskim in komunističnim izobražencem. Liberalna stranka je tudi po izgubi pomembnega dela izo-braženskega zaledja vztrajala pri političnem pragmatizmu in frazah o enotnem jugoslovanskem narodu. Zavračala je vsako misel na federalistično preureditev države in punkta-cije SLS zaradi njihove federalistične usmeritve proglašala za separatistične. Pri tem je delovala v okviru režimske Jugoslovanske nacionalne stranke in podpirala gibanja in časopise na Slovenskem, npr. časnika Pohod in Borba, ki so propagirali jugoslovanski nacionalizem in občasno celo izražali simpatije do razvoja dogodkov v Italiji in Nemčiji. Ko je na volitvah leta 1935 Jugoslovanska nacionalna stranka doživela neuspeh in je Korošec vstopil v vlado Jugoslovanske radikalne zajednice, se je politična moč liberalne stranke v Sloveniji zvečine sesula. Liberalci so, potisnjeni v opozicijo, še naprej ohranjali v rokah nekatere pomembne gospodarske organizacije (npr. Ljubljansko kreditno banko in Zvezo slovenskih zadrug), del tiska ter prosvetno organizacijo Zvezo kulturnih društev, v svoji politični orientaciji pa vztrajali v podpori centralističnemu jugoslovanstvu. Toda hkrati so v drugi polovici tridesetih let podpirali napredne kulturne tokove, odločno zavračali nacionalsocializem in se postavljali v bran španske republike. To pa ni preprečilo novih cepitev in delitev. Proti koncu desetletja so liberalno stranko zapuščale skupine mlajših izobražencev in politikov (leva SDS, mlada JNS), njeno vodstvo pa je bilo tudi v ostrem sporu z narodno-zavednim, demokratičnim krilom narodnoprosvetne organizacije Sokol in z Zvezo kmečkih fantov in deklet. Na decembrskih parlamentarnih volitev leta 1938 se je liberalna stranka povezala s slovensko socialno demokracijo, v prvi vrsti na protikatoli-ški (protiklerikalni) in unitaristični podlagi, nato pa se pridružila Mačkovi vsedržavni opozicijski listi. Toda skupaj s socialnimi demokrati ji je uspelo zbrati le 14% glasov in je prehitela samo levičarsko Ljudsko fronto (7,4% glasov), vpadljivo pa zaostala za SLS, ki je dobila kar 78,6% glasov. Tako politično in socialno oslabljena je dočakala okupacijo. Socialistični in komuni-nistični tabor Socialisti so bili v tridesetih letih prav tako razcepljeni kot v dvajsetih. Pri tem je glavnina zlasti kvalificiranega delavstva pripadala Socialistični stranki Jugoslavije, ki je bila leta 1929 razpuščena podobno kot druge stranke. Socialisti so v tridesetih letih ohranjali svoje sindikate (Uje-dinjeni radnički sindikalni sa-vez Jugoslavije - URSSJ). V Sloveniji so ti obvladovali slabi dve tretjini sindikalno organiziranega članstva. V svojih rokah so držali Delavsko zbornico Slovenije in Borzo dela. S tem so imeli precejšen vpliv na socialno politiko in deloma tudi na socialni položaj delavstva. V glavnem so socialisti vodili mezdna gibanja, stavke in sklepali kolektivne pogodbe s podjetji. Imeli so precej občinskih odbornikov v mestih in industrijskih krajih (Maribor, Celje, Trbovlje, Jesenice, Kamnik itd.). Izdajali so časopis Delavska politika in sindikalno glasilo Delavec. Imeli so tudi dobro organizirano in kvalitetno prosvetno organizacijo Svoboda. Socialisti so zastopali reformistične nazore in pri tem zavračali komunizem, klerikalizem in večinoma tudi cerkev kot institucijo. Kritizirali so tudi profitniški liberalizem in njegovo nesocialno obnašanje. Zavzemali so se za moderno delavsko zaščitno zakonodajo, za politično demokracijo, za sekularizacijo in laizacijo družbe, za moderni šolski sistem s čim daljšo skupno enotno šolo. (dalje na str. 18) 1. Redne možnosti za sodelovanje slovenskih državljanov na volitvah — Socialdemokratska stranka Slovenije (SDSS) je pretekli teden vložila predlog zakona o spremembah in dopolnitvah zakona o volitvah. Doslej veljavni zakon je namreč neprecizen in povezan z različnimi formalizmi ter roki, ki praktično onemogočajo glasovanje slovenskim državljanom v tujini. S predlaganimi spremembami in dopolnitvami bi omogočili uresničevanje z ustavo zajamčene volilne pravice tudi tistim državljanom, ki so na dan volitev v tujini, kjer stalno ali začasno bivajo. SDSS tako predlaga, da se rok, v katerem se kot veljavne upoštevajo glasovnice, ki prispejo iz tujine po pošti, podaljša na četrti dan po volitvah do 12. ure. Predlagane spremembe naj bi omogočile tudi praktično izvedbo določila o volitvah na diplomatsko-konzu-larnih predstavništvih (DKP). Volilne komisije DKP-jev bi po predlogu imenovala državna volilna komisija, člane volilnih organov pa naj bi imeli možnost predlagati tudi društva in organizacije, ki združujejo Slovence po svetu. Predlagani zakon določa tudi volilni prag v višini petih odstotkov. 2. Za razrešitev sindikalnega monopola — Po razpustitvi Zveze sindikatov Slovenije (april 1990) se je Zveza svobo-dnih sindikatov Slovenije (ZSSS) proglasila za edinega pravnega naslednika in prevzela tudi vso lastnino nekdanjega monopolnega sindikata. S to prisvojitvijo lastnine si je ZSSS v primerjavi z novonastalimi sindikati ustvarila privilegiran položaj. Gre za premoženje, ki so ga 50 let ustvarjali vsi državljani Slovenije, zato je nesprejemljivo, da si ga danes lasti le en sindikat. Ker kljub številnim poskusom ZSSS ni bila pripravljena na noben dogovor so poslanci SDSS v proceduro vložili predlog zakona o skupnem upravljanju lastnine nekdanje Zveze sindikatov. Omenjeni predlog zakona bi uredil upravljanje lastnine na ta način, da bi vsi reprezentativni sindikati na državni ravni v roku enega leta ustanovili kapitalski sklad, na katerega bi se preneslo celotno premoženje Zveze sindikatov Slovenije od 7. aprila 1990. 3. Sledi vodijo k ruski in jugoslovanski mafiji — Značilnost sedanjega gospodarskega trenutka v Sloveniji je predvsem izredno težaven gospodarski položaj velikih podjetij, ki jih je nekdanji režim spodbujal in kljub slabim poslovnim rezultatom ohranjal pri življenju. Posledice takšne gospodarske politike danes z vso silovitostjo prihajajo na dan in mnoga podjetja gredo v stečaj ali pa njihova sanacija bremeni proračun. Slovensko javnost je prejšnji teden hudo vznemirila TV oddaja o sanaciji mariborskega podjetja TAM, za katerega je bil sprejet sanacijski program v višini 8 milijard tolarjev (65 milijonov US dolarjev). Ogorčenje je povzročil sum, da so bila proračunska sredstva namesto za izvedbo sanacijskega programa uporabljena za poplačilo spornih pogodb in provizij posredniku iz ZRJ v enem izmed poslov omenjenega podjetja in ruski mafiji. Zaradi kršitve zakona o sanaciji gospodarskega položaja TAM-a in njegovih odvisnih družb, zlorabe položaja ministra in osebne odgovornosti za oškodovanje TAM-a zaradi podpisa garancijske pogodbe in odobritve spornih plačil (provizij) je SDSS vložila interpelacijo o delu in odgovornosti ministra za gospodarske dejavnosti dr. Maksa Tajnikarja (član ZL - nekdanji komunist). 4. Janez Janša v Veliki Britaniji — Janez Janša se je pretekli teden mudil na večdnevnem obisku v Veliki Britaniji, kjer se je srečal tudi z britanskim zunanjim ministrom Malcolmom Rifkindom. Med številnimi srečanji se je Janša po nedavnem srečanju s predsednikom britanskih laburistov g. Tonyem Blairom sestal še s člani vodstva stranke, med drugim tudi z g. Douglasom Hoylom, predsednikom poslanske skupine Laburistične stranke. V okviru obiska se je udeležil tudi konference Atlantskega sveta Velike Britanije in kot edini govornik izven NATA udeležencem spregovoril o vlogi Partnerstva za mir pri iskanju odgovorov na varnostna vprašanja v Evropi. V drugem delu se je srečal s številnimi rojaki, ki živijo v Veliki Britaniji, obiskal slovensko dopolnilno šolo in Slovensko katoliško misijo, kjer sta mu ga.
