- PREGLED NAJVAŽNEJŠIH DOGODKOV -
Potapljači našli računalnike iz Challengerja ter več posmrtnih ostankov astronavtov
CAPE CANAVERAL, FLa. — Kot kaže, so potapljači, ki iščejo razbitine vesoljskega plovila Challenger ter njegovih raket, našli računalnike, ki so kontrolirali polet. Pri NASA upajo, da bodo v računalnikih in nekaterih drugih najdenih napravah še vedno ohranjeni podatki o zadnjih trenutkih Poleta. Te naprave namreč zabeležujejo podatke vsako tisočinko sekunde. Izvedenci ne vedo, ako so podatki ohranjeni, ker so bili računalniki in druga oprema v vodi več kot šest tednov.
NASA noče komentirati glede posmrtnih ostankov astronavtov. Po nekaterih nepotrjenih vesteh, so pripeljali posmrtne ostanke nazaj v Cape Canaveral, kjer jih skušajo identificirati medicinski izvedenci. Potrjeno je bilo, da so potapljači našli več Predmetov, ki so bili osebna last astronavtov.
Preiskava o nesreči Challengerja se nadaljuje. Sodeč po že objavljenih izjavah in Poročilih, je prišlo do nenavadno nestrokovnega ravnanja v NASA glede nekaterih tehničnih problemov v zvezi z raketo na trdo gorivo. NASA je ugotovila namreč, da je le gola sreča preprečila katastrofo na eni prejšnjih poletov vesoljskega plovila.
Sovjetska kozmonavta uspešno izstreljena v vesolje — Izstrelitev televizirana
MOSKVA, ZSSR — Včeraj so sovjetski Vesoljski strokovnjaki uspešno izstrelili v vesolje dva kozmonavta, ki bosta živela in delala na velikem vesoljskem laboratoriju, ki obkrožuje zemeljsko oblo. Kozmonavta Leonid Kizim in inženir Vladimir Solovjev sta izkušena vesoljca, saj sta pred dvema 'etoma bivala v vesoljski postaji Saljut 7 kar 237 dni, torej svetovni rekord. Vse kaže, da b° njihov polet tudi tokrat trajal več mese-Cev, najbrž se jim bodo v prostorni postaji, k' jo Sovjeti imenujejo Mir, pridružili drugi kozmonavti.
Sovjeti so presenetili s tem, da so že Vnaprej napovedali izstrelitev kozmonavtov ter da so izstrelitev sproti televizirali. To je 5*°kaz, menijo zahodni opazovalci, da imajo Sovjeti precej zaupanja v zanesljivost njiho-v'h raket. Po prihodu na oblast Mihaila S. Gorbačova kažejo Sovjeti sploh več samo-2avesti.
Predstavniški dom bo glasoval o pomoči »contras« prihodnji četrtek — Reaganova Pobuda v težavah celo v zveznem senatu
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Ostra debata v zveznem kongresu glede predloga predsednika Reagana o odobritvi 100 milijonov °'arjev pomoči nikaragveškim »contras« se nadaljuje. Nič ne kaže, pravijo opazovalci ^zmer na kapitolskem hribu, da dobiva eagan več podpore med še neopredeljenimi °ngresniki. Kar največ otežuje Reagana je sPl°šno prepričanje kongresnikov in tudi ^ogih drugih opazovalcev, da »contras« sPloh niso resnično gverilsko gibanje in da !majo nobene možnosti strmoglaviti sandi-n^tični režim v Nikaragvi. Tudi 100 milijo-T0V dolarjev ne bi jim torej kaj pomagalo. ega mnenja so celo nekateri, ki sicer sogla-J0 z Reaganom glede nevarnosti sandini-stlčnega režima.
V naslednjih dneh bo Srednjo Ameriko Šal ala ^c*egac'ja kongresnikov, ki bo sku-v a s svojimi ugotovitvami prepričati kolege sPodnjem domu, naj podpirajo Reaganov
predlog. Obisk organizira Bela hiša, prijavilo se je doslej 9 kongresnikov, takih, ki že podpirajo Reagana.
Včeraj je Reagan obiskal State Department in si ogledal razstavo orožja, ki so ga gverilcem v El Salvadorju posredovali sandi-nisti. Razstava je na ogled v javnih prostorih State Departmenta.
Ferdinand Marcos menda ima 800 milijonov dolarjev vloženih v neki švicarski banki — Komunistični gverilci zadržani do Aquinove
MANILA, Fil. — Vladni preiskovalci, ki iščejo podatke o denarju, ki ga je bivši predsednik Ferdinand Marcos na razne načine ukradel in nato spravil v tujino, so ugotovili, da ima Marcos spravljenih samo v eni od švicarskih bank 800 milijonov dolarjev. Posebna preiskovalna komisije, ki raziskuje zadevo, menda tudi ve za nekatere druge bančne vloge Marcosa in njegove žene Imel-de. Preiskovalci priznavajo, da bo veliko težji najti načine, po katerih bo lahko filipinska vlada dobila nazaj ukraden denar.
V teku glede Marcosovega finančnega poslovanja so tudi preiskave v ZDA. Kot kaže, je bilo ugotovljeno, da si je Marcos preko nekaj sodelavcev prisvojil več milijonov dolarjev uradne ameriške gospodarske pomoči Filipinom. Marcos, njegova družina in razni sodelavci še vedno živijo na ameriškem letalskem oporišču na Havajih.
Švedske oblasti aretirale 35-letnega
moškega, osumljenega sodelovanja v atentatu na predsednika vlade Palmeja
STOCKHOLM, Šve. — Včeraj so švedske oblasti aretirale nekega 35-letnega Šveda, o katerem menijo, da je povezan z atentatom zoper predsednika vlade Olofa Palmeja. Neznani atentator je namreč ustrelil 59-letnega Palmeja 28. februarja zvečer. Osumljenec menda pripada neki skrajno desničarski, protikomunistični skupini. Preiskava je ugotovila, da se je osumljenec nahajal v bližini kraja atentata, ni pa mogel zasliševalcem pojasniti, zakaj je bil tam. Osumljenčev odvetnik priznava, da je le-ta podoben risbi, ki gaje o osumljenem atentatorju narisala neka umetnica, ki ga je takoj po atentatu videla na cesti nedaleč od kraja, kjer je bil Palme ustreljen.

Bogota, Kol. — Kolumbijske oblasti
sporočajo, da so ubile voditelja gverilskega gibanja M-19. Ta skupina je v zadnjih letih izvedla več napadov in atentatov.
Darmstadt, ZRN — Včeraj se je približeval Halleyevem kometu zahodnoevropski sond Giotto. Sond je poslal nekaj zanimivih slik, nato pa je bila sondova kamera poškodovana od praha v bližini kometa. Druge naprave na sondu so pa še pošiljali za znanstvenike koristne podatke o kometu.
Washington, D.C. — Predsednik Reagan je imenoval bivšega republikanskega kongresnika iz New Yorka, 63-letnega Barbera Conable-a, za novega predsednika Svetovne banke. Včlanjenih v tej banki je kar 149 držav iz vsega sveta.
Moskva, ZSSR — Sovjetski voditelj Mihail S. Gorbačov je izjavil, da bo ZSSR nadaljevala s svojim enostranskim moratorijem glede podzemeljskih jedrskih poskusov vse dokler ne bodo ZDA izvedle takega poskusa. ZDA niso pripravljene sodelovati v takšnem moratoriju.

V	četrtek, 13. marca, zjutraj je na svojem domu v Clevelandu umrl 67 let stari Ivan Vidmar, rojen v Plešivici, Slovenija, v ZDA je prišel 1. 1949, mož Frances, roj. Rus, oče Frances Strojin, Johna, Jeanette O’Donnell, Antho-nya, Franka, Marie in Josepha, 12-krat stari oče, brat Jerneja (Kanada) in Marije Kutin (Jug.), tast Anne, Colette, Mojce, in Vanesse, sin Elizabete, roj. Šeškar, in Franca Vidmarja (oba že pok.), zaposlen kot mizar pri F.H. Hill Co. in nato pri King Music Co. do svoje upokojitve 1. 1981. Pogreb bo iz Grdinove-ga pogrebnega zavoda na Lake Shore Blvd. jutri, v soboto, v cerkev sv. Vida dop. ob 9.30 in od tam na pokopališče Vernih duš. Na mrtvaškem odru bo dane od 2. do 9. zvečer.

V	nedeljo, 9. marca, prav na svojem 72. rojstnem dnevu, je na svojem domu v Fairview Parku umrl Michael J. Birtič, pred leti živeč na E. 62. St., mož Marie, roj. Bergles, oče Michaela in Nancy West, 4-krat stari oče, brat Frances Albu (pok.), Sophie Vidmar in Regine Birtič (pok.), zaposlen pri Bethandale Co. do svoje upokojitve 1. 1979, član ADZ. Pogrebna sv. maša je bila v cerkvi sv. Angele, pokopan je bil na Kalvarija pokopališču.

Kje je izhod iz krize
Vedno več gospodarstvenikov v Jugoslaviji je prepričanih, da je sedanje tamkajšnje gospodarske krize kriv predvsem sistem. S tem samb potrjujejo uvid mednarodnih strokovnjakov za marksizem, da ta ni sposoben rešiti gospodarsko vprašanje.
Današnjo družbeno ureditev v Jugoslaviji imenujejo tamkajšnji nosilci oblasti »socialistično demokracijo« ali »ljudsko demokracijo«. Kaj izraza pomenita?
•	Socialistična demokracija »temelji na družbeni lastnini proizvajalnih sredstev in samoupravljanju občanov« (Slovar slovenskega knjižnega jezika). Oba ta temelja sta kaj vprašljiva. Če so lastniki tovarn in strojev vsi občani, potem ni dejansko lastnik nihče in za gospodarske katastrofe tudi nihče odgovoren. Samoupravljanje bi bilo lahko dobra stvar, ko bi imeli v vseh važnejših družbenih vprašanjih občani res kakšno besedo; v resnici nimajo nobene — namesto njih odloča partija.
•	Ljudska demokracija je tista, ki ima v njej »oblast delavski razred in druge napredne sile« (Pravopis slovenskega knjižnega jezika). Torej so od izvrševanja oblasti vse druge skupine občanov izključene. V imenu česa in s kakšno pravico? Ig kdo sploh odloča o tem, kdo je napreden in kdo ne?
•	Resnična demokracija daje vsem občanom enake možnosti, da od'očajo o družbeni ureditvi sami in določajo svoje zastopnike na vseh stopnjah oblasti. Samo takšno ravnanje je pravično do članov družbe. To pojmovanje sloni na spoznanju, da smo vsi ljudje v bistvu enaki, to je, da imamo vsi enake pravice in enake dolžnosti.
Vsi občani morajo torej imeti enake možnosti, da volijo in da so voljeni. Nihče ne sme biti že vnaprej od kakšnega mesta v družbi izključen. Vsakdo mora imeti ob enakih pogojih pravico, da postane direktor podjetja, vseučiliški profesor, poslanec, minister, ministrski predsednik. Pogoj za to ne sme biti, da je član partije, kot tudi ne sme biti ovira za to to, da je veren.
Resnična demokracija se takč pokaže za najnaprednejšo obliko družbene ureditve in za edino, vredno človeka 20. stoletja. Izkaže se pa tudi za edino, ki je zmožna uspešno reševati gospodarsko vprašanje. Če primerjamo samb stopnjo inflacije v neki državi z enopartijsko družbeno ureditvijo in v drugi z zahodno demokracijo, se nam to razkrije. (V Zahodni Nemčiji znaša npr. inflacija trenutno manj kot 2%, v Jugoslaviji pa več kot 80%).
Rešitev jugoslovanskega gospodarstva bi bila potemtakem v zamenjavi sistema. Vse drugo se zdi le krpanje nezakrpljivega. A spremembe morajo priti od znotraj, od občanov. In predvsem od oblastnikov.

Cvetna nedelja Slovenske šole pri Mariji Vnebovzeti
CLEVELAND, O. — Že čutimo prihod pomladi. Ptički so se vrnili in prepevajo po drevju. Zvončki oznanjajo prvo pomladno cvetje. Vse se veseli, vse se raduje, saj smo v pričakovanju vsalo-letnega praznika Velike noči.
Otroci Slovenske šole pri Mariji Vnebovzeti že par let berejo Pasijon na Cvetno nedeljo. Tudi letos se pripravljajo, da bodo brali v nedeljo, 23. marca, pri pol enajsti sv. maši.
Da bo bolj slovesno in domače, bodo delali tudi butare s pomočjo staršev, kar se tudi Vi, ki to berete, lahko pridružite. Že v petek zvečer in v soboto dopoldne se lahko ustavite v dvorani stare cerkve. Kdor ima narodno nošo, je še posebej povabljen k tej sv. maši. Blagoslov butar bo že ob 10. uri dopoldne v nedeljo, 23. marca, v dvorani stare cerkve, nato pa bo odšla procesija v cerkev.
Pridite, da skupno počastimo Jezusov slovesni vhod v Jeruzalem, saj za tem dnem bomo premišljevali naporno in težko pot na Kalvarijo.
Za dan Zveličarjevega Vstajenja pa želimo vsem obilo velikonočne sreče in veselja!

Ljudska umetnost: Pirhi na Slovenskem
Pirhi spadajo gotovo v eno izmed najbolj pestrih slovenskih ljudskih običajev in obrti, eno izmed najlepšili področij naše ljudske umetnosti, ki je še — čeprav vedno redkeje — pri življenju. Ta običaj je poznan iz časa naših starodavnih prednikov, pirhe omenja Valvazor, in so sestavni del velikonočnega žegna, katerega nosijo k blagoslovu po celi Sloveniji. Slovenski velikonočni pirhi se uvrščajo med najlepše okrasne primerke v Evropi. Vse značilnosti, po katerih se ločijo naše različne slovenske pokrajine, odsevajo tudi na ornamentiki velikonočnih pirhov, kijih imenujemo tudi pisanice, pisanke, remenke ali remenjice.
Jajce je indoevropski simbol zbujajočega se novega življenja v zgodnji pomladi. Bela lupina je pomenila zimsko snežno odejo v naravi. Kakor kokoš, ki vali piščance, s svojo toploto zbuja izpod bele jajčne lupine mlado življenje, tako naj tudi toplota pomladnega sonca čimprej razmakne belo snežno odejo, ki pokriva zemljo, ter naj pričara izpod nje v vigredi novo življenje.
Prvotno so bili pirhi rdeče in rumene barve, kot simbol sonca. Simbolizirali so željo, da bi pomladno sonce čimprej raztopilo sneg in izpod njega zbudilo v naravi novo življenje. Rdeča barva pa je tudi pomenila izraz sreče in lepote.
Pirhe so poznali že stari Kitajci, Egipčani in Perzijci, saj so praznik pomladi imenovali praznik rdečega jajca. Perzijci so dali ob začetku pomladi pirhe svojim sorodnikom, prijateljem in znancem v veri, da jim s tem darom prinesejo sreče in zdravja. Rimljani, kakor tudi stari Slovani, pa so dajali poslikana jajca v grob
svojim rajnim kot simbol novega življenja.
V krščanstvu je poslikano jajce postalo simbol Kristusovega vstajenja in ga srečujemo med velikonočimi jedili vseh narodov s krščanskim izročilom.
Barvanje pirhov
Folklorna umetnost barvanja pirhov v Sloveniji se je razlikovala od kraja do kraja po ornamentih in motivih, pa tudi po načinu, katerega so uporabljali pri barvanju in risanju.
Čudovito so lepe belokranjske pisanice in pa tudi prekmurske remenke. Za te so značilni stilizirani in geometrijski ornamenti. Na belokranjskih pisanicah srečujemo ravne, cikcakaste, valovite in zobčaste črte, prav tako Spirale, trikotnike in kroge, srca, pike in sonce, kateri je narisan kot krog, obdan z žarki ali pikicami. Ti okraski so ravno taki, kakršne najdemo na keramičnih in bronastih izdelkih, izkopanih
ZDA. Prav včeraj smo namreč končali z dobrodelno akcijo, v kateri so nekateri naši bratci prispevali hrano za revnejše občane našega mesta, po uradnih podatkih naj bi bilo vsaj 7 odstotkov Amerikancev brez zaposlitve, veliko je kriminalitete itd. Ko smo torej kritični do razmer v Sloveniji in SFRJ, moramo razumeti, da tudi glede naše družbe ni vse čisto, pristno. Demokratična družbena ureditev nikjer ne zagotavlja, da bodo gospodarski in socialni, tudi nepolitični problemi enostavno in za vedno odpravljeni. Nedemokratičen političen sistem pa zagotavlja, da bodo taki problemi vedno silno pereči, poleg tega tudi, da bodo osnovne človečanske pravice slehernega člana politično nedemokratične družbe zanemarjene, zavržene. Tak sistem še imajo v Sloveniji in SFRJ. Nesprejemljiv bi mora! biti za vsakega zavednega Slovenca, kjerkoli ta živi, v domovini, zamejstvu ali tujini.

Na pisanice rišejo tudi stelji-co ali sladko koreninico, katera je rastlina Bele krajine. Krščanskega izvora so: razpelo, lestvica, žeblji, trnjeva krona in drugi predmeti križanja Jezusa. Prav pogosto najdemo morištranco, 1HS, srce Jezuosovo in Marijino, pa tudi osmerorobni metliški križ. Prav podobno ornamentiko uporabljajo tudi na prekmurskih remenkah.
Na gorenjskih in notranjskih pirhih najdemo smrečico in nabožne motive. Modernejšega izvora so napisi, nabožni in poljudni.
Po vsej Sloveniji so pirhi polni, le na Gorenjskem so surova jajca najprej izpihali, potem pa šele okrasili. Luknjice so zalepili z barvanimi iz p3' pirja izrezanimi cvetkami, p° navadi rdečimi. V Škofji Loki so z vodenimi barvami in barvnimi tintami okrasili belo jajčno lupino z vejicami h1 cvetlicami, jagnjetom in ban-dercem, srčki in golobčki.
Belokranjske pisanice so pi' šali s pisalko in voskom, oc tod pisanice. Pisali so navadno na surova jajca z voskom, nato so jih skuhali in ji pobarvali. Prvotno so jih barvali z rastlinskimi barvami Nabrane rastline sO vreli v vodi, dokler ni dobila zaželjc ne barve, vanj so prilili maj hno količino kisa, da seje bar va usedla. Tako so dobili tem norjavo barvo iz čebulneg3 listja, rumeno iz žefrana, črn° iz hrastovega lubja, in rdečo i pražiljke.
V ljubljanski okolici, na Gorenjskem, pa tudi na Sta

jerskem v Halozah, so P1 , pirhe z navadnim peresom 1 oljem. OD PRVE FEBRUARSKE DO PRVE MARČEVE
NEW YORK, N.Y. - Čeprav 50 že minila tista leta še pestrega in bogatega skupnostnega narodnega življenja pri slovenskem sv. Cirilu na Osmi v New Yorku, še zmerom menim, da Sem kroničar življenja tako farnega v ožjem kot tudi srenj-skega v širšem. Seveda tedensko poročanje z ozirom na Preobrazbo tega našega skup-nostnega življenja sem opustil z enostavnega vzroka, da se ne da pisati o nečem, česar ni.
Vendar na prvo marčevo nedeljo nam je župnik oče Robert po drugem obisku frančiškanskega provinciala p. Vovka iz Ljubljane dejal na

saj nam je bila zima močno naklonjena za obiskovanje sv. Cirila. Seveda, če jaz štejem naše ovce, nikdar ne štejem tiste, ki ne pridejo, ampak le tiste, ki pridejo, ker vsi ti so mi zgledi osebnega žrtvovanja. Kot kroničarju pa mi je tudi ta dolžnost naložena, ali je všeč Miklavžu ali Martinu Krpanu, ki občasno ob svojih dnevih obiskujeta naše narodno občestvo. Če v mojih naporih ne vidita nič drugega, potem moram reči, da sta prizadeta po delni oslepitvi.
Zakaj sem si tokrat izbral takšno naglavje tega mojega kroniškega napisa? Ker sta bili prva februarska in prva mar-čeva nedelja nekam izjemni glede obiska sv. Cirila. Za prve nedelje smo v zadnjih letih padli v navado, da nas je nekaj prišlo, člani Društva Najsvetejšega Imena, k osmi maši, pri deseti pa je bilo v cerkvi običajno kar puščobno. Letos smo to slabo navado opustili, in je bila še pri deseti maši udeležba kar čedna. In kdo se ne bi tega veselil, ki mu je pri srcu čimdaljša ohranitev slovenskega sv. Cirila v nju-jorški narodni srenji, ki se številčno krči iz leta v leto!
Vendar letno cerkveno poročilo nam v zadnjih treh letih dopoveduje, da imamo v farni blagajni vsako leto več in več. Torej: naši slovenski ljudje so postali bolj darežljivi, dobili pa smo za župnika očeta Roberta, ki je bolj štedljiv. Vendar to je samo materialna plat, ki nikakor ni najpomembnejša. Premnogokrati je v življenju tako, da ima zelo revna družina bogatejše intimno notranjo izživljanje, bogatejše in razkošnejše v duhovnem pogledu, kot pa marsikatera materialno bogata družina.
Poglejmo letošnje cerkveno poročilo malce še iz druge plati. V poglavju »Duhovno poročilo« najdem (joj, zopet štejem!): krsti: 1, obhajila: 5200, pogrebi: 3. Ko sem to prebral, sem se resno zamislil. Krst eden, pogrebi trije, čeprav jih ima moje preštevanje osem, poroka pa nobena. Tudi te številke so podoba našega življenja.
Že pa vem, da bo v prihodnjem poročilu zapisano: krsta: 2, porka: 1. Na drugo februarsko soboto namreč, dan po Valentinovem, smo v naši cerkvici doživeli spet nekaj lepega. Slovensko dekle, hčerka Ivana Blejca, ki nam je pred tremi leti napravil našo cerkveno lepo, čisto novo, se je odločilo (hvala Bogu!), doživeti ta za vsakogar najodločilnejši življenjski trenutek v domači narodni slovenski cerkvici.
Čeprav ni mogočna, vsi smo pripadniki malega naroda, na tujem pa male skupnosti. Taje bila na ta dan mogočna v čutenju in ponosu ob zavesti veličastja narodnega ponosa, ko je nevesta Veronika izpričala svojo zavednost. In vprav zato sem tudi ob tem trenutku pohitel k slovenskemu sv. Cirilu.
V naši cerkvici nismo doživeli takšnega trenutka vse od
maja 1979, ko sta se poročila Zdenka in Ernest Pavšič, ki je kar reden obiskovalec naše slovenske cerkvice. Veronika Blejec si je izbrala za moža fanta Štefana, ki je poljskega rodu, torej slovanska vzajemnost, ki se na tak način najbolj utrjuje. Sedaj poznamo Veroniko pod imenom Veronika Winiarski.
Na ta sobotni popoldan ob treh je bila naša cerkvica spet skorajda čisto zasedena, čeprav smo bili Slovenci v manjšini med slovansko-poljsko večino. Kot narodnjak, iskreno naklonjen slovanskemu bratstvu, sem bil srečen ob veličastni podobi našega slovenskega sv. Cirila, in ob zavesti, da še imamo tiha, skromna dekleta, ki svečano izpričajo ob najpomembnejšem življenjskem trenutku, da so pripadnice številčno malega slovenskega naroda, česar se ni treba sramovati.
Draga Veronika, hvala Ti za to Tvojo odločitev in izpriče-vanje!
V	obdobju od maja 1979 do februarja 1986 pa smo imeli v naši cerkvici še en poročni obred. Poročila se je vdova Anna Pirnat s pripadnikom češkega rodu Štefanom Cha-balikom. Oba sta že v visokih srednjih letih, Anna pa je sestra naše delovne faranke in srenjčanke Frances Correl. Menim, da je tudi to primeren prispevek k razlaganju, kje se lahko tudi dd ohranjati našo narodno njujorško slovensko srenjo ter življenje njene fare sv. Cirila. Prav je imel oče Robert, ko je dejal na prvo marčevo nedeljo: od vas samih je to ohranjevanje najbolj odvisno, čeprav nam je ljubljansko cerkveno vodstvo dokaj naklonjeno!
V	tem času smo iz predpustne dobe prešli v postno in kaj kmalu se bodo zvrstile: tiha, cvetna in vstajenjska nedelja. Seveda včasih smo bili ob takšnem cerkvenem obdobju v polnem življenju obhajilnih nedelj društev. Zdaj imamo samo eno Jednotino obhajilno in še ta bo po Vstajenjski.
Moja kronika bi bila nepopolna, ko bi ne omenil naše pustne zabave, maškarade. Z ozirom na maske smo bili letos dokaj na boljšem po zaslugi Ernesta Pavšiča, ki je organiziral dve omizji in skupino mask. V našo dvorano in v maske je zvabil svoje prijatelje, Hrvate, jaz pa brate Srbe, in ti dvoji so nas rešili iz moralne in gmotne zagate.
Čeprav ni bilo skoraj nič dobička, je župnik Robert v naslednjem cerkvenem oznanilu zapisal: Ta naša zabava je bila lepa, prijetna in živahna! Pa nekateri naši mislijo, če župnik vabi na cerkveno zabavo, ki ima namen sproščene medsebojne povezave, kar nam predvsem manjka, da ni njihova dolžnost se temu povabilu odzvati.
Naslednje moje kroniško bo veselejše, ker bo velikonočno s Cvetno nedeljo. Da bo ta lepa, sem gotov, ker za to bodo pre-

Srce mi pravi, naj napišem nekaj besed v spomin starosti slovenskih sodobnih skladateljev in gotovo vrhunskemu glasbenemu umetniku komaj minule generacije, Matiju Tomcu, ki je nedavno umrl v Sloveniji priznan in spoštovan od vseh umetniških krogov. Ker so bili njegovi življenjski podatki, kakor tudi njegov skladateljski opus že navedeni v tem listu, hkrati z oznanilom njegove smrti, se bom omejil le na svoje osebne spomine nanj in njegovo umetnost, ki so več kot priložnostni.
Je značilno, da se je najino glasbeno delo ponovno med seboj prepletalo, s čimer so se množili tudi dovolj topli osebni stiki. Že kot gimnazijska študenta v Jegličevih zavodih v Št. Vidu je naju družilo prepevanje v istem zboru nikdar pozabljenega glasbenega učitelja prof. Vojteha Hybaška, čeravno je bil Tomc tri leta mlajši od mene.
Potem sva se spet znašla oba v ljubljanskem semenišču tik po končani prvi vojni. Ko sem jaz resno zbolel in moral izstopiti, je za menoj prevzel Matija vodstvo slavnega lemenatar-skega zbora. Nato sva se za več let razšla, jaz sem živel dalj časa v Novem mestu (kot vzgojitelj in profesor kmečkih fantov na Grmu), Tomc pa je po dovršitvi konservatorija na Dunaju prevzel profesuro glasbe na škofijskem zavodu v Št. Vidu.
Po daljšem premoru naju je muzika (cerkvena, ki je bila Tomcu glavno torišče dela) spet združila v službi glasbene umetnosti, ko sem 1. 1932 prišel v Ljubljano in tamkaj kot dodatno zaposlitev prevzel vodstvo kora na novo ustanovljeni fari sv. Cirila in Metoda pri sv. Krištofu za Bežigradom, ki jo je zelo spretno vodil »Amerikanec« p. Kazimir Zakrajšek.
Tam sem izvežbal, ne velik a odličen pevski zbor, s katerim sem nastopil v ljubljanski frančiškanski cerkvi s koncertom starih božičnih pesmi, Tomca pa sem naprosil za orgelsko spremljavo, ki jo je rad prevzel in sijajno izvršil. In spet mi je priskočil na pomč pri igranju orgel, ko smo z obširnim koncertom blagoslavljali nove orgle pri Sv. Krištofu (1935).
To Tomčevo sodelovanje z menoj prikazuje le v majhni obliki njegovo reproduktivno glasbeno ustvarjalnost, o kateri se malo piše, pa je velikega pomena in važnosti. Svet pozna Tomca kot slavnega komponista cerkvene in svetne glasbe, kjer se je res razvil v
skrbeli Babnik-Zupanovi z narodnimi butaricami in nošami. Kaj bomo mi drugi dodali k tem njihovim naporom?!
Vstajenjska bo lepa, s pirhi, čeprav ne več s takšnimi, ki jih je znal napraviti le prejšnji župnik oče Richard, ki je imel pravi lepotni in umetniški prijem pri izdelavi velikonočnih pisanic. Te so bile izvirne in domiselne, zato tudi svojevrstna povezava tradicije in modernosti. Tu so naši umetniki odpovedali skorajda čisto, in torej takšne Vstajenjske ni več, odkar je odšel oče Richard.
Tone Osovnik
vodilnega skladatelja med Slovenci. Na tem področju sla njegovo ime in njegova slava neizbrisna.
Pri komponiranju zlasti nabožne glasbe se je oziral po starih mojstrih iz dobe Gallu-sa-Petelina in njihove izrazne sile požlahtil z moderno, sodobno skladateljsko tehniko. Ustvaril je značilen svoj slog, katerega je Marko Bajuk na široko odkril Slovencem na velikem koncertu na prostem v Ljubljani Pevske zveze z nad 2000 pevci ob priliki Evharističnega kongresa 1935. Tamkaj so izvajali obširno Tomčevo kantato a capella, napisano za to priliko.
Od drugih večjih Tomčevih nabožnih skladb naj še omenim njegov Križev pot, ki sem ga med vojno vihro poslušal v ljubljanski stolnici in me je s svojo močjo globoko prevzel. Je moderna muzika z uporabo sodobnih izraznih sredstev. Spremljavo za orgle, ki jo je očividno celo mojster Stanko Premrl komaj zmagoval, je baje Tomc tudi orkestriral. Z orkestrom bi bil učinek še mnogo večji, pa je bil tudi z orglami (stolnimi!) dovolj mogočen.
Najbolj pa briljira Tomc s svojimi priredbami ljudskih (narodnih) pesmi, kjer se lahko mirno reče, da je naš največji mojster. Srečno naključje je pripomoglo, da je znani raziskovalec naše narodne popevke in folklore France Marolt s svojim Akademskim pevskim zborom študiral in pripravljal velik koncert narodne pesmi. Za koncertno priredbo le-teh se je obrnil na Tomca, da bi mu s sodobnimi muzikalnimi sredstvi harmoni-ziral zlasti koroške in belo-krajinske ljudske melodije. Tomc je nalogo izpolnil z ne-prekosljivo umetniško močjo, ustvaril je bisere moderne obdelave preprostega napeva za moški zbor, katere je Akademski zbor potem ponesel v širni svet. Meni še danes brnijo v ušesih nekatere njegovih koroških mojstrovin.
Prisrčno ljubke viže belo-krajinskih svatovskih pesmi pa je za vse čase ovekovečil na ploščah znani prvi slovenski oktet, pri katerem so sodelovali taki pevci kot je bil tenorist Lipušček in oba brata Petrovčiča. Jaz mislim, da si je ravno s temi priredbami popevk iz svoje ožje domovine Bele Krajine skladatelj postavil neminljiv spomenik intimne notranje povezanosti velikega umetnika s preprostim čustvovanjem ljudstva v njegovi rodni grudi.
V dokaj poznejših letih sva z rajnkim Matijem prišla nav-skriž glede vprašanja, ali je bil

peklenščka. Okovan naj bi bil samo tako dolgo, dokler bodo ljudje barvali velikonočne pirhe in jih poklanjali svojim dragim, prijateljem in znancem, ker sicer se peklenšček utegne rešiti okovov in povzročiti gorje po svetu.
Zelo zanimiv je primer, katerega mi je povedala Ana Hrovatič iz Mokronoga. Štirinajst dni pred Veliko nočjo so nesli pobarvana jajca na mravljišče. Če je bilo dovolj toplo, so mravlje zgrizle barvo tako, da so ustvarile vzorce labirintov, kot bi jih človeška roka nikoli ne ustvarila.
Težko smo ribniški otroci čakali Velikega ponedeljka, saj takrat smo se ves dan igrali razne igre s pirhi. Starejši so jih sekali. Igralec pri tem vrže novec v pirh tako, da se vanj zasadi in v njem obtiči ali pa gre celo skozi pirh. Komur se to posreči, dobi pirh. Ce pirha ne zadene ali pa novec ne obtiči, potem je kovanec last tistega, ki je pirh daroval za sekanje.
Ali pa po na panj naslonjeni deščici valjajo, trkljajo, taka-jo, trkolikajo jajca. Čigar pirh zadene spodaj ležečega, tistega sta oba pirha. Pirhe trkajo ali turčajo na Notranjskem, tilča-jo, štrucajo na Gorenjskem, štercljajo v Beli krajini. To je

Ignacij Hladnik, skladatelj »Marija skoz’ življenje« na svoj stari dan berač ali ne. Bil sem že v Ameriki, ko je Tomc objavil v ljubljanskem Cerkvenem glasbeniku trditev, da je Hladnik po Novem mestu beračil in izgledal reven kot berač.
Tista zadnja leta Hladnikovega življenja sem živel v Novem mestu in Hladnik je bil moj redni gost ob kapljici dobrega vina na grmski Kmetijski šoli. Poznal sem njegove osebne zadeve. Nace je živel v svoji hiši, kjer je zanj skrbela njegova žena, kolikor je mogla ob človeku, ki je preveč cenil pijačo in se pri obleki trmasto zanemarjal. Kadar je bil suh in žejen, je poprosil kakega Novomeščana za »dinarček«, da si je ugasil žejo. A v položaju resničnega berača nikoli ni bil. Jaz sem to svoje stališče tačas objavil v Ameriški Domovini, vendar problema s tem nisva rešila.
Če Bog da, ga bomo rešili Hladnik, Tomc in jaz na onem svetu. Malija pa naj med lem mirno počiva.

Gornji opis pirhov je namenjen slovenski mladini in družinam. Naj bi jih barvanje pirhov združilo okrog iste mize ob velikonočnem času z velikim veseljem in slovenskim domačim vzdušjem!
Ljudska umetnost pirhov v Clevelandu
Da bi se ta čudovito lepi velikonočni običaj barvanja pirhov ohranil, upeljal in zaživel tudi med nami v Clevelandu, in še posebej med našo mladino, bo Slovenski folklorni inštitut prvič letos organiziral barvanje in pisanje pirhov v torek, 18. marca, in zopet v torek, 25. marca, ob pol sedmih zvečer v Slomškovi dvorani pri fari Marije Vnebovzete v Collinwoodu. Za ta namen sem že več let zbirala potrebni material in primere pokrajinskih originalnih pirhov.
Vabimo vse družine, starše in otroke Slovenskega folklornega inštituta, prav tako pa tudi vso slovensko javnost, posebno družine z otroci. Tisti, katetji imate vsaj nekaj poznanja pri barvanju pirhov, pa ste še posebej vabljeni za vaš nasvet in pomoč. Priporočamo tudi, da kake potrebne pripomočke prinesete po možnosti s seboj, posebno kuhana ali barvana jajca.
Na Cvetno nedeljo bo v Slomškovi dvorani po blagoslovu butar Slovenski folklorni inštitut razstavljal slovenske velikonočne običaje in ljudske umetnine, kakor tudi v torek, 25. marca, zvečer. Naj bi za letošnjo Veliko noč vsak dobil pirh za darilo, na katerem bodo narisani slovenski motivi. Gotovo bo to najprisrčnej-še darilo, izraz medsebojne ljubezni, izraz patriotizma in narodnega ponosa. Torej vsi, prav vsi ste prisrčno vabljeni, če ne barvati, pa sekati pirhe, ali pa vsaj malo po slovensko pokramljati!

Lansko turistično leto v Sloveniji rekordno
LJUBLJANA — Lani so v Sloveniji našteli 8,82 milijona turističnih prenočitev, kar je za 9 odstotkov več, kot jih je bilo v prejšnjem, prav tako rekordnem letu 1984. K novemu rekordu je veliko prispeval rekordno visok obisk tujih gostov. V Sloveniji so zabeležili 3,73 milijona prenočitev tujih gostov, kar je celo za 15 odstotkov več kot lani.
Zanimiv je seznam dežel, iz katerih pridejo turisti v Slovenijo. Daleč prednjači Zahodna Nemčija, katerih državljani so prenočili lani v Sloveniji kar 1,06 milijona noči. Na drugem mestu je Velika Britanija (548.000 prenočitev), tretja Avstrija (398.000), četrta Italija (391.000), peta Nizozemska (363.000), Danska (167.900), Francija (82.200), Češkoslovaška (79.800).
Osma dežela na seznamu so ZDA (79.000 prenočitev), iz Kanade pa so našteli sorazmerno malo prenočitev in sicer 9895. Celo iz Izraela, države, s katero SFRJ nima niti diplomatskih odnosov, je bilo 8644 prenočitev, iz Avstralije pa 6954.
V to naštevanje najbrž niso nič vključene tiste prenočitve, ki jih ameriški, kanadski in avstralskimi Slovenci »zabele-žujejo« pri svojcih in ne v raznih hotelih, motelih in kampih v Sloveniji.

John is married to Alice I Artel, whom he met while at a [Zarja picnic. He is the father of Carla Neimes and Kathy [Giannou, and the proud [grandfather of Ivan Giannou.
[All of John’s family are [members of Lipa. While his children were growing up,
John was active in Mladinski Pevski Zbor (now called SNPJ Circle 3), as were they. He was president several times along with being Master of Ceremonies at their annual cir-|cuses.
The Slovene Home for the | Aged has always played an im-Jportant role in John’s life. He rhas been on the Board of Trustees since it’s inception,
[and held the position of Presi-[dent twice in its history. He [has always been active in in-[suring its well being.
John’s other current [memberships include the [Waterloo Pensioneers Club,
[the Cultural Exchange Club,
Sloveske Čitalnice and the Primorski Klub. He is President of Klub Društev at the Slovenian National Home. In the past he has served on the [Board of the Slovenian [Workman’s Home and the Slovenian Co-operative Food

We need to apply wisdom to maintain and support these “Homes Away From Home.’ So far we have had moderate success.
Supporting and making use of the Slovenian Workmen’s Home are several valued organizations. The Waterloo Pensioners Club meets monthly and promotes an annual Dinner-Dance. Crusaders No. 45, AMLA, presents its annual Dinner-Dance. SNPJ lodges, Spartans and Comrades hold regular meetigs. The USS Band schedules regular rehearsals each Thursday. Northeast Little League is an occupant.
Others on the list are Balinca Club, SNPJ Lodge V Boj No. 53 and Strugglers No. 614, Ward 11 Democratic Club, Waterloo Beach Association, Slovene Women’s Union No. 41, Liedertafel Singing Society, PSWA Circles No. 1 and No. 7 and the National Board, PSWA.
The Jadran Singing Society celebrated its 65th anniversary with one of its most successful concerts here.
We extend cordial recognition to our “Slovene Man of the Year” John Cech.

12 Al Stražar E. 80th Man of Year
Newburgs’ East 80th Slovenian National Home has selected Albin (known to all as “Al”) Stražar, of the well known Slovenian Stražar family of East 81st Street, for its 1986 Man of the Year.
AFs father, the late Frank Stražar, Sr. and Mother, Angela (nee Hren), with their family of four sons and one daughter, have resided at the Stražar Family Home on East 81st in the heart of Newburgh for 62 years, to date. Together they instilled in Al, and his brothers, the late Frank, Jr., Tony and Ray and his sister, Mrs. Angela Lemut, interest and pride in the neighborhood, church, the Slovenian community and the East 80th Slovenian National Home, which is only a stone’s throw from the Stražar residence.
Although Al, with his wife, Mary, resides in Warrensville
Heights, he has really never left Newburgh. He has, through the years of his adult life (especially the last 15 years), remained loyally involved with the Newburgh Slovenian National Home. He, with his wife, Mary, and other family members, is at home at Mother Strazar’s (his childhood home) on East 81st, very frequently, - unselfishly spending time with Mrs. Stražar, who is now 88.
The name of Stražar is familiar to every Slovenian family in the Slovenian National Home circle, for not only Al, but the entire family, has been active and has participated in National Home activities through the years of its existence. Mr. Frank Stražar, Sr., Al’s father, only recently deceased, was the East 80th Slovenian National Home Man of the Year in 1969.
Al’s life in the Newburgh
community is evidence of his loyalty to and love of his Slovenian heritage. In his youth he was always active in parish and neighborhood groups, among them, the Slovene Singing Group Črički under Ivan Zorman, the St. Lawrence Dramatic Guild, the CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) of his teens, St. Lawrence Band, and the parish Holy Name Society.
Al is a life-long member of St. Lawrence Lodge No. 63, KSKJ and of Lodge Mir. No. 10, AMLA (where his late father Frank and late brother Frank Jr. were active officers). He is a member of St. Henry Parish and is an employee of Cleveland Pneumatic Tool.
When writing about Al, one cannot overlook his wife Mary (of the well known Yartz family of the St. Vitus and St. Clair area). When Al was President of the Slovenian National
Newburg Heritage Alive in ’85
During the year 1985, the Board of Directors of the Slovenian National Home in Newburgh, has been kept busy with minor repairs to the Home and with the various social functions held throughout the year.
There are six 50-50 Split Raffles held during the year. Starting with the month of February and then every other month. The donation is $10.00 per couple. This includes admission, sandwiches, snacks, refreshments and music for dancing, plus of course a chance to “get rich.” These events are an excellent source of revenue.
In the month of June, Ann Kapela Day was held in Newburgh. This was an event that will be remembered for a long time to come. Ann was the Newburgh Lady of the Year for 1985. This year, also in June, the Home will honor the Newburgh Man of the Year for 1986, Albin Stražar, former president and director.
The month of October finds everyone busy with the Annual Clambake. The bake is catered by Maple Heights Catering and music by the John Vadnal Orchestra. October is also the month for the 50-50 Split Raf-fle.
New Years Eve is another social event that is very elegant. This is the one event that the directors are on their own and have a good time with their many friends.
The East 80th Lanes of which we are the proprietors, is going strong. There is bowling six nights a week. Anyone interested in bowling or arranging for a moonlight bowling fun night, can call 883-2963 for more information. In the year 1986 the East 80th Lanes will be Host to the Annual AMLA Handicap Bowling Tournament. This will be held May 1 through the 4th. Spectators as well as bowlers are welcome to the Slovenian East 80th Lanes.
The summer months are lean months and in the year 1985 a letter of appeal was sent out to all the certificate holders. The letter explained the dilemma that happens every summer. Although we are small in number, we, OUR CERTIFICATE HOLDERS, are the greatest. The response was excellent and needless to say, we made it. Just a thought, even though our members have moved from the Newburgh area, into the suburbs and out of state, the heritage instilled by our
parents in still there and the memory of the Narodni Dom lingers on as is evidenced by the 1985 Appeal. Thank you one and all.
As the year drew to a close, our memories begin. Memories of the ladies working hard in the kitchen, selling tickets, serving the people and whatever else came about. Always with happiness and kind thought for one another. A special thank you to Alice Arko who takes care of our deliveries, since the home is closed at the time of deliveries. Of course, we cannot forget the men who are outnumbered, but always there. Thanks to one and all for without you, the Slovenian National Home would not be as good as it is.
Sadness also happened to the Narodni Dom. One of our founders, Mr. Frank Stražar passed away. Mr. Stražar was a former Man of the Year for the Home and also a member of the Board. Sadness followed again in January of 1986, another founder and past president, Sylvester Paulin, passed away.
The Board of Directors would like to take this opportunity to thank our customers, members, lodges and anyone else who helped us in any way in the year 1985.
Congratulations to Bill Janša, the Federation Man of the Year and Congratulations to June Price the Federation Woman of the Year.
Our own Honoree, Al Stražar, and all the other honorees from the other halls also get our applause.
Congratulations also to the Federation of Slovenian National Homes on the 25th Anniversary of its existance. May you continue to grow and prosper in fraternalism. We the Slovenian National Home in Newburgh, are proud to be a member of such an an excellent organization as the Federation.

Home on East 80th St. (1975-1976) and throughout his work for the National Home, Mary was and is always at his side, willing to help and participate in National Home work, activities and events.
Al and Mary are the parents of a son, Tom, whom many of us have met, along with his wife, Jacqueline, at countless Slovenian National Home events through the years. They are also the proud grandparents of Tom’s and Jackie’s three children, Kimberley, Patricia and Jennifer. Al is that kind of loyal Slovene and father, instilling in his son, as his father before him, interest in the National Home’s progress.
When Al’s tenure as President of the East 80th Home was completed, he continued his interest in the Slovenian National Home in many respects. He was an active member of the Home’s Maintenance Committee. He was also an active member of the SLS (St. Lawrence School) Reunion committee for six years (1974 through 1979).
This five-member committee held SLS Reunions, sponsored 1 by the Board of the Slovenian National Home, annually and drew hundreds of persons from outside the neighborhood BACK to the Slovenian National Home on 80th (which is near to St. Lawrence’s in Newburgh).
This SLS special get-together added to the Home’s other special events such as the Annual SNH New Year’s Eve Dinner-Dance, and now, the current raffle and dance held the first Wednesday of every other month at our Hall, alternating with our neighboring Slovenian National Home in Maple Heights, Ohio.
Truly — Al Stražar is not only a “Man of the Year”, but a man, proud to be a Slovenian, and a man who is always there to give a helping hand, always saying “Yes” to requests for promoting the Slovenian National Home on East 80th Street in his and our much loved community- Newburgh.

George Kitko is West Park’s Man
We chose George Kitko as our Man of the year for several reasons. He has not been a member of our board for very long but he has accomplished a great deal for West Park Home in that short time. We can honestly tell everyone he is our pride as a salesman. As a young middle-aged man he is energetic and extremely enthusiastic. We don’t dare become dejected or negative about the future of the Home. He always manages to have strong feelings about our culture and bring about new ideas to encourage us. George has no reservations to travel the city soliciting and reminding people that we are viable here on West 130th Street. He solicits east and west if it will promote a cause
for the Home.
George was born to mother Agnes, nee Lunder and Joe (Gerk) Kitko on East 82nd street, St. Lawrence parish. Brothers are Louis, Frank, and Joe. As a child he attended Standard elementary school and Parmadale, later Wilson Jr. High and Wm. D. Howells. In peacetime service of the Army George served during the Berlin and Lebanese crisis in the 815th Battalion overseas and the 40th Transport Corp. hauling petrol; later in El Paso and Yuarz out of Fort Bliss, Texas.
He recalls E. 55th St. and Bonna Ave. as familiar territory in the late fifties and sixties where Sterle’s Restaurant and Sachsenheim were
popular places. His father, Joe is remembered as a popular , entertainer in the local taverns, well known at Tomsk’s and Strrtisba’s, also the former Prince Avenue Home. His aunt Anne Christofic was a manager of the Home at its demise.
Edie Gerk, his grandfather, a foundryman, resided on Way Ave. with his grandmother
Anna. John and Mary Lunder, maternal grandparents, came from Colorado many years ago to settle in West Park on Carrington Avenue.
George Kitko is our man for West Park. We all wish him many successes and good health. CONGRATULATIONS!!!
All about the West Park, Button Box Club

The West Park Button Box Club was organized January 1980 at the West Park Slovenian National Home.
Rehearsals are held, every week. At present we have numerous songs in our reper-toir. Recently we obtained new uniforms.
We take part in performing for Senior Citizens groups, lodges, Slovenian Homes, ethnic festivals at the shopping malls, for button box groups holding annual jam sessions, and for nursing homes, etc.
It is very gratifying to witness the patients at the nursing homes in wheelchairs moving their hands and feet to the tempo of the polka music. This really raises their spirits.
This March our group chartered a bus to attend the three “Florida Slovenian Days” held by Lodge 603 of SNPJ at their Slovenian Home in Samsula, Florida and other points of interest. We will be rubbing elbows with many fine musicians from all over the country at this affair.
We are happy and proud to uphold the tradition of Slovenian Button Box music.

There isn’t much to write about West Park Slovene Home that hasn’t been written at some previous time. However, we strongly support our manager of the year, Richard Frantz who has been a proprietor of note in the area before he came to us. He has many friends in the business and a great following. He promotes repeat business and in return we of the Club return the favor by patronizing often and enjoy the cameraderie.
Richard encourages Slovenian entertainment, plans activities to encourage participation. We all relate very well with all flavors of ethnicity. The young-vibrant, aged-slow, strongly-ethnic and boldly-
vocal. It’s truly a pleasant atmosphere.
We, the members of the board, the few of us, Rudy Jaksa, pres.; Rudy Pivik, Fin. sec.; Joe Pultz, Vice-pres.; Helen Konkoy, Corres. Sec’y.; Geo. Kitko, prom, ch.; M. Pivik, Stefie Pultz, Joe Peresutti, Anne Zaletel, Bea Capek, John Mcguth, Leo Gross, and Sophie Jurca, maintenance, are supportive of each other and concerned for the welfare of the Home.
Age has taken its toll of our building and we plan to take care of the most demanding repairs; the roof and parking lot. Meantime more cosmetic work will be done to the
ballroom. The event for spring is the BOOSTERS DANCE Sunday, April 13 with Johnny VadnaPs orchestra.
The Boosters is a new club of just that, persons who were solicited by George Kitko to assist us in specific functions in order to boost or back-up our efforts to promote successful dances, concerts or dinners. This is our first such activity. We are grateful to some 200 members and promise an enjoyable late Sunday afternoon dance. The public is welcome. A 50-50 Raffle is to follow on Friday, April 25.

Mrs. Lucia Jerin, 249 Lehigh Ave., Roselle Park, New Jersey died on February 28. She was the widow of Joseph Jerin who died in 1944.
Born in Domžale, Slovenia in 1893, she was the daughter of Janez and Anna Habjan Skrabar. She resided in Vandl->ng, Pennsylvania for 57 years before moving to Roselle Park three years ago.
She was a member of St. Joseph Church, Forest City, Pa., its Altar and Rosary Society, and Branch 7 of Slovenian Womens Union. She was also an Honorary member of the American Slovenian Heritage Club of forest City, Pa.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Josephine Terchek with whom she lived, two sons, Louis of Belleville, N.J., and Joseph of Mayfield, Pa., seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was held on March 3 with a Mass of Christian burial in St. Joseph Church, Forest City, Pa. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
ANNA ZAIC
Anna Zaic, 90, of 926 Fervid St., a resident since 1960, died Feb. 16 in Daytona Beach, Florida.
She was born in Slovenia. She Was a former resident of Cleveland where she was active in various Slovene lodges artd clubs. She was a member and past president of PSWA N°- 1, Lodge Washington No. 32, Lodge Betsy Ross, AFU, and SNPJ No. 603 in Samsula, Fla., and the American Slovene Retired Club in Sam-sula and Euclid.

ANTON WAPOTICH
Anton Wapotich, 88, a former resident of Parkside Dr., in South Euclid, passed away at the Slovene Home for the Aged on Wednesday, March 5th.
Mr. Wapotich was born in Jesenicah na Gorenjskem, Yugoslaiva. He was employed at Willard Storage Battery until his retirment. He was a former member and secretary of SSPZ No. 24 and continued as the secretary from 1925 when they merged and became No. 28 Lunder Adamic until 1983 when he became head auditor. He was one of the original organizers with Mr. Stockal and Mr. Candon when they started the SNPJ Spartans No. 576 in 1927. He was a former member of SNPJ No. 5, former Director and head Auditor of Klub Društev, former Director and a stockholder in the Slovenian National Home. He was the Man of the Year for the Slovenian National Home for 1982. He was former representative for the Cleveland Federation of SNPJ Lodges and former representative for Slovenian Library and former representative to the Slovene Home for the Aged, and a member of Euclid Pensioners.
A memorial service was held Saturday, March 8 at Zele Funeral Home, 452 E. 152 St.
He was the husband of Mary (nee Krajec), father of William (dec.), grandfather of James and Lorene and the brother of Charles Wick Sr. (dec.).

Many factors help book become entity
Democracy in action is when a small group of Slovenians can band together to apply for and receive public funding to research, collect, document and preserve Slovenian Folk Art. Such was the case when the Slovenian American National Art Guild embarked on what turned out to be a three year project on the origin of the “Splasher Cloths.” Unable to find any documentation on the subject, it was decided to make it a project for the Guild. It was felt that the project was worthy enough to pursue requesting a grant from the Ohio Arts Council and the Ohio H"tnanities Council, which we did. Being neophytes in grant application, we went through many revisions before receiving approval of a grant, with the following commitments:
1.	To initiate a collection of existing “Splashers.” Through the interest and generosity of many individuals, over 60 splashers have been collected. The names of the individuals who shared their splashers with us are recorded as well as a picture of each cloth;
2.	To organize and present an exhibit of the splasher in connection with a'Symposium depicting the background of Slovenian History, Slovenian Immigrant Woman, Influences in Slovenian Folk Art, and Sources for Ethnic History. The exhibit was held March 10-29, 1985 at the Clara Fritzsche Library, Notre Dame College, So. Euclid, Ohio. The Symposium and Reception took place on March 10th in the Gold Room of the College, attended by an

Blizzard Blinds St. Clair Senior Scribe
As I prepare to write my report on this bitterly cold day of March, I look out of the window at the new cover of snow, and wonder ^hat the rest of the month holds for us. Last night, while returning from a funeral home in Maple Heights, without warning, we were engulfed in a blinding snow storm. Had we been on a city street, we could have pulled over to the curb and waited, but on the freeway... do you dare stop? Visibility was zero.
In fact, the following day, the news reported it as a “white-out”. Really scary. The car was plastered with the wind driven snow, obliterating the road and surrounding terrain. Ahead and all around, nothing but snow.
Fortunately, our driver, with the aid and advise of the other helpless occupants of the car, and with the trust and guidance of someone’s guardian angel, we literally felt our way along at a slow crawl.
At one point, our driver stopped the car and got out to explore and assure himself that the car was still on the road. Eventually, the snow storm eased up and thanks to our driver, we arrived safely home. In our anxiety, no one took notice of the time, nevertheless I can assure you that it took us at least an hour to cover the normal 15 to 20 minute trip.
Ah, yes, the frisky month of March plays games with the weather, and at random, throws the full course at us; from snow to rain to sunshine and everything in between. April should bring us calmer weather, we hope. April will also bring us the Annual Dinner sponsored by the St. Clair Pensioners Club. The date is Sunday, April 20. Serving will be from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Our well known and capable cook, Lojska Fegus, has planned a menu of soup, chicken and pork, salad, vegetables, dessert and coffee.
Other refreshments will also be available. For your social entertainment we will have music, door prizes, and other drawings. We invite our friends and readers to join us in the Lower Hall of the St. Clair National Home on that afternoon. Get your tickets from members or call 391-9761 for ticket reservations.
Our start for the year 1986 has been good news mostly. Mid-March already and thankfully no deaths to report. Nor have we had reports of any major illness since our last meeting. There were several reported cases of more severe cold related ailments. Affected were Frances Novak (E. 66 St.) who is now back in circulation, and Betty Kukec, who for over a month’s span, has been feeding poorly, but now slowly If, on the way to recovery. Hope you will be joining us again very soon.
Our February meeting was well attended. At this meeting the membership approved, by vote, that petitions be sent to
our State Senator and Representative, asking they support and work for the passage of Senate Bill 88 and House Bill 418. Letters were also sent to Senator Suhadolnik and Representative Ron Šuster, sponsors of the Bills.
The Bills are aimed at the auto thief. Did you know that at the present time, Cleveland is number one in auto thefts? The Bills, if passed, will be a major strike against organized auto theft rings. To assure passage, it is vital that clubs, groups and individuals pressure their Ohio Senators and Representatives to vote for passage of the Bills. The
Bills are due for hearing early in April. Time is short. Has your group responded to the call? Have you? Act now.
Our Club can boast that it has two of its members servng with the Ethnic Find, in the Cleveland Department of Human Resources, whose purpose is to give service and assistance to Senior Citizens. Ann Zaucha has been serving in this capacity since 1983, and works at the Kovacic Recreation Center. More recently, Angela Bolha, has been added to the staff, also to serve our area. Angela is also qualified to help senior citizens in filling out their income tax papers. Unfortunately, no location for
this tax aid service has been set up in our St. Clair area. She is currently located in the Euclid Mall, where the service is available on Wednesdays. If you need this service, contact Angela. Both ladies are assigned to our area to help its senior citizens.
The date of our next meeting is Thursday, March 20 at 1:30 p.m. in the Annex of the St. Clair National Home. Help with the final plans for our Annual Dinner. Also, let’s hear your interests for the, summer season.

25 Bands to mark Tony’s radio
In Cleveland known as the polka capital with 50 different polka bands, the Tony Petkovšek radio show promoted many out of town and Canadian artists as well and introduced the Avseniks, Slaks, and 15 or 20 other groups from Slovenia. The impact of the First Lojze Slak Ensemble appearances in 1970 helped to create a new United Slovenian Society from a standing committee and certainly was a main contribution to a new button box revolution which saw the rise of established players like Frank Novak (now 80) and young 20 year olds like Joey Tomsick become extremely active in teaching and heading up newly formed button box clubs which are now established throughout the country.
As with everything else, the ethnic radio stations were not without changes. In early 1977 WXEN decided to go to rock and the Tony Petkovšek shows were switched to WZAK-FM 93 daily and for a time Saturdays on the former Board of Education station WBOE. Tony joined the Zapises, Bauers and the late Polish Baron A. W. Zebrowski on WZAK until the demise of Cleveland’s second full time ethnic voice took place suddenly in 1981.
An always friendly situation with the Bucar broadcasters and the then manager Leo D’Arcy brought the show for the first time, without interruption, to the AM side of the radio dial, 1330-WELW based in Willoughby. The new phase of cable broadcasting also simulcasted the radio shows over NBN (Nationality Broadcasting Network) onto cable TV systems in greater Cleveland as an ethnic audio service. Featured regularly on the programs are Alice Kuhar and Joey Tomsick.
In the Fall of 1984, Tony Petkovšek was approached by the newly formed Cleveland Public Radio organization to conduct a one hour Slovenian Program every Sunday from 1 till 2 p.m. on the 50,000 watt stereo station, WCPN - 90.3 FM, which is part of an all ethnic line-up of programs on the Sunday schedule on the otherwise News and Jazz
channel.
Without a doubt the saddest occasion took place in 1975 with the passing of Johnny Pecon, a true mainstay for so many years on the polka scene.
Happiest occurences for 25 consecutive years have been the Thanksgiving Polka Parties conducted by the volunteer Cleveland Slovenian Radio Club, John Pestotnik, chairman. This event on the actual anniversary date of the radio program ran for 20 years on St. Clair Avenue at the Slovenian Home and moved to St. Joseph High Auditorium (Tony Petkovsek’s alma mater on Old World Plaza) in 1981 where this year it will be part of a whole weekend of special events in November. Twenty-five Cleveland bands will play at the traditional and 25th Anniversary holiday event
followed on the next day by a dinner-dance for old times sake at the St. Clair Slovenian Home and on the Sunday after, November 30, a multicultural Slovenian show in Euclid staged in co-operation with the United Slovenian Society for the benefit of the Slovene Home for the Aged, a beneficiary of the Tony Petkovšek Radio Club “Radiothons” in the past to the tune of a quarter of a million dollars.
This then is the brief background and update on the longest running daily ethnic and polka radio show anywhere - conducted by Tony Petkovšek for the past 25 years.
Tony Petkovšek was the youngest Slovenian “Man of the Year” ever honored back in 1967 at age 26.

CAULIFLOWER-HAM AU GRATIN
Heat oven to 400°.
4 cups partially cooked fresh cauliflower or 2 pkg. (10 oz. each) frozen cauliflower, thawed and well drained
1	1/4 cups chopped fully cooked smoked ham
1	can (11 oz.) condensed Cheddar cheese soup
1/4 cup milk
2/3 cup Bisquick baking mix
2	tbsp. firm margarine or butter
2 tbsp. shredded Cheddar cheese
1V2 tsp. ground nutmeg
Arrange cauliflower in ungreased rectangular baking dish, 11x7x1 1/2”; sprinkle with ham.
Beat soup and milk with hand beater until smooth; pour over ham. Mix remaining ingredients until crumbly; sprinkle over soup mixture. Sprinkle with paprika if desired.
Bake until topping is golden brown, 20 to 25 minutes.
Eight servings. Takes 10 minutes to prepare.
SANTA FE TACO CHILI BAKE
Heat oven to 400°.
1 can (15 oz.) chili with beans 11/2 cups Bisquick baking mix 1/2 cup milk 3/4 cup shredded Cheddar cheese paprika
shredded lettuce chopped tomato shredded Cheddar cheese
Heat chili, stirring occasionally, until hot. Mix Bisquick and milk until dough forms; beat 30 sec.
Spread half the dough in ungreased square baking dish. 8x8x2”. Top with chili; sprinkle with 3/4 cup cheese. Drop remaining dough by 6 spoonfuls onto top; sprinkle with paprika.
Bake until light brown, about 25 minutes. Top with lettuce, tomato and cheese. 6 servings-Takes 10 minutes to prepare-

John Telich presented a $500 check to Tony Petkovšek for the U.S.S. Band at its recent concert in behalf of his parents, Mike and Irma Telich, our great Slovenian philanthropists and members of the Permanent Scroll of Honorees listed every day in the Ameriška Domovina.
Jonn reported to me that his parents were touched after reading Charlie Tercek’s emotional appeal for support of the U.S.S. Band which ■ he wrote in the Ameriška Domovina. The couple decided to help the band by the monetary donation. Thanks-Mike and Irma Telich. Music is a viable cultural asset which the Slovenians have been blessed to both appreciate and perform with admirable distinction throughout their painful	history.

The next meeting of the Slovenian Natonal Art Guild will be on Monday, March 17 at 7:30 p.m. at Slovenian Society Home, Euclid. Featured demonstrator will be Frances “Tanny” Babic.
She will explain the designs of the Slavic people as she uses colored dyes and the beeswax and lighted candle.
It is not generally known that Slovenians, too, have their special designs which are used
for the “pisanice.”
A member of the Art Guild, Tanny is interested in folk art, is a teacher, lecturer and consultant, and currently is Director of the Lifelong Learning Center at Notre Dame College. She also worked on the editorial staff for the Splasher Cloths publication.
The decorated Easter eggs “pisanke” are not only meant to be shared with others as gifts, but they tell a story or portray a message handed down through folklore from the country whch created the designs hundreds of years ago.

Political Situation in Yugoslavia Discussed at Cleveland State Lecture
Last Sunday afternoon about 75 persons gathered at University Hall on the Cleveland State University campus to hear a lecture by Dr. Rastko Močnik, a Professor of Sociology at Ljubljana University, who is spending the current academic year as a Fulbright Exchange scholar at the University of California, lierkeley.
Prof. Močnik described the current political situation in Yugoslavia in some detail. He discussed the dispute between those who advocate a more centralized system, with more power in the hands of the central government in Belgrade, and those who support the idea of having the individual republics, such as Slovenia, having more autonomy in political and economic questions.
Prof. Močnik was clearly on the side of those advocating more of a role for the republics as opposed to the centralistic concept, and for a continuation of the process of political democratization which has been under way over the last several years and which is clearly reflected in the popular press, if not in such periodicals as Rodna gruda and the annual Slovenski koledar, publications issued by the government-sponsored Slovene Emigrants’ Society.
At the same time, Prof. Močnik was not in favor of the idea of allowing more than one political party to be active in the country. Yugoslavia is still a one-party state and any independent political parties other than the Communist party are illegal. Močnik’s view was that additional parties would not be Yugoslav in nature, but would divide along republic or ethnic lines, which would have catastrophic
Happy and productive are adjectives which best describe the first year of the Fairport Ensemble. Under the capable direction of Ray Krajc, the ensemble produced its first album “Fairport Fantasy” currently in its second pressing it continues to sell well.
July saw the ensemble leading an enthusiastic tour through Slovenia, Austria, Germany and Switzerland with the highlight being the ensembles performance before 26,000 receptive Slovenians at Škofja Loka.

results for the country as a whole. His preference, he said, was for a no-party system, which is not, however, a practicable solution.
In response to a question from the audience, Močnik welcomed the current debate in Slovenia concerning the mass murder of political opponents of the Communists, which occurred after the war in Europe was actually over. At least some of the facts are now becoming known to the Slovene public there. He conceded there has as yet been no objective account based on documentary evidence, the kind of account a professional historian could provide.
It was in brief a very interesting afternoon, a welcome change from the usual format of a Slovene gathering. Prof. Močnik’s appearance was sponsored by CSU and the Slovenian American Heritage Foundation. Credit goes also to Dr. Vladimir J. Rus for serving as moderator, to Dr. Karl B. Bonutti of CSU for spearheading the organizing effort and for putting challenging questions to Prof. Močnik; finally also to those from the SAHF who were in charge of the refreshments following the lecture and discussion. Also helpful was Ivo Vajgl, Yugoslav Consul in Cleveland; he and Močnik were students together at Ljubljana University in the 1960’s.
It is to be hoped — from this corner at least — that more such occasions can be organized in the future. The only unfortunate aspect of the afternoon was the absence of many in the Slovene community who, given their professed interest in Slovene affairs, should have been there.

Malečkar will conduct last concert
Spring is just around the corner and the Glasbena Matica singers are preparing to welcome it in a big way. They are planning to greet it with a grand celebration consisting of a banquet, a concert and dance.
This will take place on Saturday, March 22 at the Slovenian National Home, 6417 St. Clair Avenue.
Under the direction of Vladimir Malečkar, an entertaining program entitled “Spring Again” has been arranged and the singers are prepared for a lively evening. Reginald Resnik will be the piano accompanist, and the Ray Polantz Orchestra will accompany a few of the numbers and also furnish the dance music following the program.
This will be. a good opportunity for everyone to join in welcoming the most beautiful season of the year.
Doors will open at 6 p.m. for cocktails, and the dinner will be served at 7 p.m.

Special Note: As a matter of information, Mr. Malečkar is retiring after a very successful musical career. This performance will be his last as director of Glasbena Matica. All members will miss him very much and wish him the best of health and happiness in his retirement.
