To me, jasno, strašno razburja. Ti neuspehi so zahtevali temeljito proučitev celotnega načrta. . . .” Blag spomin na Tebe, dragi, bo živel v nas do konca dni, Ko bomo v nebesih skupaj prišli, veseli bomo zopet vsi.. ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■"■■■■■■■■“■■■■■■■■■■J Importiramo in razpošiljamo v vse kraje Amerike in Kanade S bučno olje, slovenske gramofonske plašče, : nofe in knjige. Sundermeier Acting Postmaster FRIEND OR ENEMY I One of the great problems of law enforcement, as any peace officer will tell you, is found in the common failude of citizens and organizations to fully support and cooperate with the authorities. By the same token, when that kind of support and cooperation are given, criminals find that their chosen calling becomes much less rewarding, and infinitely more risky. Acme Markets, a chain system with headquarters in Philadelphia, offers a fine example. During the past 14 years the stores have suffered 97 armed holdups in that city, during which two store managers and two police officers were killed. Acme has cooperated aggressively with the police in ferreting out those xesponsible. Result: out of the 97 attacks have come 95 convictions, including 10 life sentences. There have been no acquittals, probations or appeals. At present, Acme is offering $10,000 rewards for information wihich will lead to the apprehension and conviction of criminals who held up six of its stores in other communities. It is publicizing a method whereby the necessary information can be provided without the identity of the provider being disclosed. If past precedent is any guide, excellent fruits may be expected from this. An indifferent public is the criminal’s best friend. On the other hand — as Acme is proving — an alert and angry public, eager to assist the hard-pressed police and other law agencies, can be the criminal’s most effective enemy. si vitos uois name SJMk 'Revkw 5==^-.___ __________ Everybody ?$ Gaming \ i» BRUNO SAMMART1NO The most attractive- and expensive - wrestling show ever offered hereabout will usher in the Fall and Winter season at the Arena on Friday, November 1st. QALE OF WHEAT TO RUSSIA. ^-5 The Administration’s decision to sell wheat to the Communist countries was defended by the President on the grounds that to do otherwise might lead to a renewal of cold war activity. On the other hand, if the record of American generosity and good will towards the Soviet Union beginning with the Hoover relief in 1922, and followed by $11 billion lend-lease in 1940 could not alter Communist aims, hov/ can a one shot wheat sale affect Soviet cold war strategy? The President denied that the wheat would be subsidized, yet the price will be lower than that paid by U. S. taxpayers when the Government bought the wheat. Whether it is called a “price differential”, a "world market price” or any other fancy slogan, the fact is that the U. S. taxpayer is subsidizing the Moscow housewife at the rate of 56 cents a bushel. That is, unless Nikita Krushchev decides to keep the profit himself! The American people will be paying from $168 to $224 million for the “privilege” of providing wheat to the man who is dedicated to the burial of our Nation, our Government, and our families. The fact that the sale was agreed to without even any effort to extract political concessions is a major diplomatic blunder. Consider these facts: (1) We were the last remaining source for wheat purchases according to a report by the Department of Agriculture. Canada has sold all that port and delivery facilities can handle. Western Europe's harvest is estimated to be 300 million bushels below last year’s. (2) Congressmen and Senators of both parties are convinced that the sale is not to relieve hunger in the USSR but to enable the Communists to meet export commitments to East Germany and Cuba. The President agrees that we have no way to regulate the distribution of wheat once it enters Communist ports. (3) Only if we make a basic decision that the USSR is no longer our enemy can we conceivably justify this sale without concessions, and it is still true that an army travels on its stomach. (4) Because of the strategic cold war policy implications underlying such a transaction the President at least should have called for a serious Congressional/ Executive review of the proposal. I was among a group of Members of Congress called to the White House just before the President made the announcement, but our advice was not sought. We were simply told that the decision had been made. The whole meeting was an ex post facto operation. (5) In 1961 the Congress wrote stipulations into the foreign aid law forbidding aid to 19 designated Communist countries unless the President found such aid “vital to the security of the United States”. Furthermore, Congress went on record in the 1961 farm bill as being opposed to the exportation of subsidized products to any but “friendly nations”. Thus, the clear intent of Congress has been ignored by the Executive Branch. (6) Finally, the sale without driving a hard bargain graphically demonstrates the inability or unwillingness of our leaders to exploit cold war opportunities. Soviet Russia is known to have good land and other resources ample to feed its people. It is primarily the grandiose ambitions of the Communist Government for world conquest which prevents the diversion of these resources from sput-nicks, missiles and capital goods to agriculture, the relaxation of the Kolkhoz system, and the assurance of decent standards of living. With the President’s announcement we have greatly weakened cur position of moral leadership! How can we hope to stiffen free world resistance to Communism when we are subsidizing them ourselves? How can we expect other countries to cooperate in our embargo of Cuba? The President is performing a great disservice to the American people if he tries to convince us that this sale will greatly improve relations and pave the way for peace, for it will change nothing in the basic Communist intent to destroy us. It certainly appears that the American people have good reason to feel they have been let down! SSiidenJs AS SL Joseph High School Save Oppoftarnty To Bsvefop Mura! Interests Students at St. Joseph High School, 18491 Lake Shore Blvd., Cleveland 19, Ohio, have an excellent opportunity to develop culural interests by attendance at dramatic and musical productions offered at the Hanna and Play House Theatres, and promoted by the department of English at the school. “The growing interest in the theatre which many of our students, now display has been.a major factor in the obvious increase in interest in literature here, as well as an. important infiuence in motivating students to read more,” according to Brother Stanley G. Mathews, S. M., Principal of St. Joseph High School. Students are allowed to attend one play a semester on school time. They are encouraged to attend others on free days, weekends, or it the evening occasionally. Last year three Shakespearean productions were well received, especially by juniors and seniors: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, A Winter’s Tale, and Twelfth Night. The appearance ol director Jack Landau and actor j Will Geer at St. Joseph assemblies helped to stir up interest in Shakespearean performances among students who were reading and discussing the plays in class. Both faculty and students enjoyed the famous musicals which came to Cleveland last year. Many attended Fiorello, My Fair Lady, and the Sound of Music at special student rates, and in each case members of the cast spoke to various English classes. The arrival of Ca-melot for two weeks, found many from St. Joseph at the Hanna, and already the tunes from this show are familiar in. the schools as students spend time before and after school listening to the records of the musical. One memorable assembly last year featured Douglas Turner and Frances Foster, stars of A Raisin in --------------O- the Jim, who discussed the Negro in the American Theater before a fascinated group of sophomores, juniors and seniors. The first productio:. attended by students was The Miracle Worker at the Hanna, which spotlights the courageous life of Helen Keller in a play written by William Gibson. Arrangements for Hanna plays arc made by Miss Laura Tait of the theatre, Mr. Robert J. Jasany, chairman ot the English Department, and Mr. Robert Bennet, Public Rc-latiors. Two members of the cast of The Miracle Worker, Donna Zimmerman and Frank Shaw Stevens, visited English classes at St. Joseph High. There is also much interest in the play Advice and Consent, a Broadway hit by Luring Mandel, based on the Pulitzer Prize novel by Allen Drury. The subject matter of this play has drawn the interest of social studies students and teachers, as well as the English department. “It is encouraging to walk in the halls,” said Brother Mathews, and hear students discussing the merits of such performances as Doctor Faustus and A Raisin in the .Sun. I recall two juniors explaining to another one how Marlowe’s work reminded them of T. S. Eliot’s Murder in the Cathedral, which they had read the previous summer. And one senior remarked atter seeing A Raisin in the Sun, “I don’t think I’ll ever enjoy a movie again after experiencing the real thing on the stage.” “As enrichment for the English program, student attendance at high-class theatre productions can be stimulating spiritual and cultural experience.” Students at St. Joseph High School will see “A Man For All Seasons” at the Hanna Theater, V/ednesday ruatir.ee, December 4. SAFETY COUNCIL REPORT Negliance of parents is a major cause in the deaths of children by fire. A survey by the Council in the Cleveland area has revealed that most of the 31 home fire deaths in Cuyahoga County during 1963 recorded by the Coroner’s office as of September 27th, resulted from careless smoking and children playing with matches or left albne. Federal Judge Connell, President of the Safety Council, stressed the urgent need for careful, constant supervision of children by parents and baby sitters. I HERE ARE SOME POINTERS FOR PARENTS AND BABY SITTERS 1. Post fire department ’phone number in a prominent spot on. the ’phone or beside it. 2. Never leave children alone in a house, even for a minute. 3. Keep matches and lighters out of reach of children. 4. Never use a match or lighter tv hunt for something in a closet or dark room. 5. Flammable liquids such as gasoline, naptha, cleaning fluids and thinners should not be used indoors. 6. Check to see that all stove burners are shut off after use. 7. Don’t empty an ashtray in a wastebasket; use a closed metal container or toilet. 8. Keep children away from fireplaces, stoves, space heaters, bon-iires and rubbish fires. I IN CASE OF FIRE 1. If you smell smoke or see flames, get everybody out of the house immediately. 2. Check to make sure everyone has left the house — designate a meeting place in advance. 3. NEVER return to a burning house to get a valuable possession or pet. 4. Call the fire department or use nearest fire alarm box. Give full address and details when ’phoning. 5. If you must go through smoke, crawl on hands and knees to avoid heavy smoke and gases. 6. If a door is hot, don’t open it. Fumes and heat or. the other side will rush in and overcome you. 7. Before leaving a burning house, shut all doors and windows if you i have time. i I 8. Smother a grease fire on cook-j ing stove by covering the pan with J a lid or by throwing baking powder ' on it — never use flour or water. j 9. Never JUMP from an upper | story window of a burring build-ing. If that is your only exit slide | stomach down, feet first out the ! window and DROP to safety. 1 Judge Connell also suggests that children tour their neigborhood and find out where the schools, the ’ churches, the fire stations and fire alarm boxes and hydrants are lo- i cated. Shannon adds that Salmon is an aggressive hitter tv 116 dbesn’t strike out often, can go back fast on fly bails, has excellent speed and a good arm. Salmon has been among the top hitters of his league in each of his four seasons. Bayh, and Congressman Winfield K. Dentor of Evansville, Indiana, have announced that the 5 cent Christinas stamp will be first placed on sale at .canta Claus, In-cianu, according to Mr. Nelson E. -.undermeier, Postmaster, Cleveland, Ohio. ■'t The Indiara Senators and Con-gressmaii said that Postmaster General John A. Gronouski had informed them that the seasonally iarrtous Indiana Post Office had eeen selected for the ceremony on November 1, during which the special stamp featuring the National Cnristinas Tree on me Ellipse near tne White Hpuse in Washington will be first sold to the public. “Since nearly 2 million ppople a yoj.tr, and over 3 million Cnristmas carets pass through tnis unique In o.ana community oi only bo residents, it is particularly suitable for me Pose Oii.ce Department to issue the seasonal stamp here,” Senator riartke said. According to Congressman Den. ton, the Banta Claus post office normally employs only two clerks ut must add seven more employees during the Christmas season merely to satisfy the national demand tor me popular Santa Claus, Indiana postmark. The Post Office Department issued a Christmas stamp for the first time in history in. 1962, and stocks sociation tells us at east 200 of were exhausted in many parts of these hunters will not return under their own power. They’ll be brought back dead — the victims of hunting accidents involving guns. The rules of gun safety are fairly voluminous — but they’re also simple, founded on the hard rock of dowr.-to earth common sense. Here are some of the basics: Know v/hat you’re firing at before you pull the trigger — which means be certain that rustle in the brush was made by a deer, and not another hunter. Never climb through or over a fence without first unloading the gun. Never shoot at a flat, hard surface — ricochets can wound and kill. Never look down the barrel of a gur. to see if it’s loaded. And keep the safety on until you’re ready to shoot. Keep guns and ammunition away from children. Be absolutely sure guns carried into camp or home are unloaded. Keep them cased until your hunting area is reached. Remember that alcohol and guns can be a lethal mixture. In sum, treat a gur. with the re- the country despite a crash program to print a billion stamps. “The Post Office Department has assured us that their printing plans, begun in the spring of this year, will provide enough stamps for all Christmas cards, with an order of nearly 2 billion already in progress”, Serator Bayh said. The November 1 date for the Christmas stamp dedication at Santa Claus was selected by the overwhelming majority of postmasters as a result of their experience with Christmas mail handling and stamp sales a year ago. Following the initial sale in Santa Claus on November 1, the Christmas stamp will go on sale the next day at post offices throughout the country. Collectors desiring first-day cancellations may send addressed envelopes, together with a remittance to cover the cost of the stamps to be affixed, to the Postmaster, Santa Claus, Indiana 47579. A close-fitting enclosure of postal card thickness should be placed in each envelope and the flap either turned in or sealed. The envelope to the Postmaster should be addressed “First-day Covers Christmas Stamp”. Do not include requests for spect it deserves. Work on the uncanceled stamps. Cover requests principle that it’s always loaded1 must be postmarked no later than and ready to fire, even though you know it isn’t. Then all the armies of hunters — yourself included — will come home under their own power. Birth November 1, 1963. John B. Clark Chief Administrative Services Gard Party ft’afiona!
