DUHA Evangelij današnje nedelje vsebuje obljube izredne domačnosti z Očetom, z Jezusom in s Svetim Duhom. V govoru po zadnji večerji Jezus naznani: »Če me kdo ljubi, se bo držal moje besede in moj Oče ga bo ljubil. Ljubezen do Jezusa nas sili, da spolnjujemo njegovo besedo; posledica tega je, da nas Oče ljubi in skupaj z Jezusom prihaja k nam in prebiva pri nas. Evharistično obhajilo izrazi to Božje bivanje v nas in ga okrepi. On pride v nas. To prinaša s seboj dolgo vajo. Jezus potem oznani: »Mir vam zapuščam, svoj mir vam dajem. 258 - V 2025 6TH SUNDAY OF EASTER FIRST READING: Acts 15.1-2,22-29 The early faith community is troubled by division and discord. They have no clear roadmap but must discern their way to the truth. The synodal way to which Pope Francis invites our Church today has its roots in the very origin of the followers of Jesus. RESPONSORIAL PSALM 67 Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.. SECOND READING: Rev. 21.10-14,22-23 The book of Revelation, written at a time of fierce persecution and division within the early Church, reassures us that whatever division and tensions there may be among the followers of Christ, his Spirit is aways with us. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: John 14.23 Alleluia - Whoever loves me will keep my word, * and my Father will love him, and we will come to him. - Alleluia. GOSPEL: John 14.23-29 At the Last Supper Jesus reassures his bewildered and sorrowing disciples. He will never abandon us. We will receive the Spirit of courage and understanding, however poor our faith may seem to us. Illustration In the business world there is an acronym called VUCA. It’s a shorthand way of describing contemporary life as Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous. The suggestion is that VUCA describes our moment in history, but each generation, including within the Church, tends to think that life was simpler and more straightforward in the past, but today’s readings show clearly that this is not the case. The disciples sitting around the table at the Last Supper may well have felt that they were challenge and the same sense of anxiety and bewilderment. This week sees the celebration of the World Day of Children. Childhood is meant to be a time of life free from worry and anxiety, but adults worry about the world that their children are going to inherit, and whether they will have the equipment to carry them through. We do our best to pass the faith on to them, but we know that at some point they will have to make a choice for or against faith – as we did ourselves. The disciples and the great saints of our history didn’t have a magic formula to tell them what to do or how to live out their faith in practice. Their strength lay in daily opening their minds and hearts to the Holy Spirit at work within themselves, within the community, and within the signs of the times. They believed in the promises of Christ and prayed Gospel teaching and lived as if they believed them. In some ways it’s reassuring to read John’s acIt may seem better to rely on business count of the Last Supper and to hear the bewildered forecasts, on expert advice or on political analysis, questions of Jesus’ disciples: where is he going, how and indeed all of this can be part of the Spirit’s can they follow him, why can he not make things work, feeding into our understanding of how we are clear? They are not so different from our own to live best according to the mind of Christ. But questions. Our questions can deepen our faith if we without a habit of prayer which reflects on how God can make space in our minds and hearts for the Spirit is present in our everyday reality, we are unlikely to to work within us. hear God’s still, small voice. We are asked to listen deeply to one another, to the voice of those on the peripheries of the Church and of society, to the signs of the times. This is where we will hear the voice of the Spirit, asking us to respond in faith, hope and love. living in a particularly VUCA moment. Jesus offered them reassurance in the promise of the Spirit, but how were they to understand this word? He told them not to be troubled but foretold his imminent death. The long-awaited kingdom was about to break through, but its leader washed the feet of his followers. The early Church was no less Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous. Its leaders had to work out the relationship between Judaism and Christianity and between Christianity and the Roman Empire. There was no blueprint or rule book, but they were confident enough of God’s guidance to claim, “it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us”. Can we trust that God’s Holy Spirit will guide us equally today? Application Each generation faces the challenge of having to make sense of faith in its contemporary context. PARENTING TIP OF THE MONTH #169 Loving guidance and care for our children is a foundational principle of our Catholic teachings on parenting. Teaching our children how to live as disciples of Jesus provides them with a firm faith foundation, but also the tools for success in life. So don’t be afraid to set boundaries, have solid expectations and provide correction when necessary. God has trusted us with his precious children to raise and the hard work of childhood will become a loving adult relationship when we parent with firm love and respect of our children.
