Kongresniki pa gledajo predvsem na soseščine — Reagan in zvezni kongres sprta prihajajoče volitve, ki bodo novembra pri-glede politike do Južne Afrike hodnjega leta. PRETORIA, J. Af. — V zadnjih dveh dneh so bile tudi soseščine, v katerih živijo Južnoafriški belci, tarča črnskih izgrednikov. D°slej so bili izgredi skoraj izključno v črnskih mestih in naselbinah, ali pa v krajih, kjer živijo tako imenovani mešanci, ki so posebna rasna kategorija v sistemu apartheida. Politična kriza v Južni Afriki je v zad-ujern času tudi močno prizadela gospodarstvo v deželi. Mnoge zahodne države so napovedale razne finančne in gospodarske nkrepe zoper Južno Afriki, da bi izrazile svoje nezadovoljstvo nad sistemom aparthei-a, zahodne banke pa so zahtevale takojšnjo Poravnavo zapadlih južnoafriških finančnih Ooveznosti. Ta zadnji pritisk je prisilil Južnoafriško vlado, da je s posebnimi ukrepi ^ejila vsoto denarja, ki lahko zapušča eželo. Vrednost južnoafriškega randa do olarja je padla v zadnjih 4 letih od $1.25 na 40 centov. V Washingtonu Reaganova administra-*Ja zopet pretehta svojo politiko do Južne ^ rike. Vzrok temu nasvetu je rastoča prisotnost virusa v krvi, ki povzroča bolezen AIDS. Ta bolezen je povsem neozdravljiva in tako so tisti, ki jo dobijo, pripisani smrti. AIDS kratica pomeni v slovenščini »sindrom pridobljenega pomanjkanja imunološke obrambe«. Gre torej za stanje, v katerem človeški organizem izgubi prirojeno imunost, sposobnost, da se sam bojuje proti bakterijam in virusom. Zaradi AIDS se v organizmu nekaj spremeni in imunološki mehanizem nenadoma ni več kos infekcijam. Tako navadno po nekajletnem bolehanju z AIDS umre žrtev zaradi za normalnega oziroma zdravega človeka nenevarne infekcije, celo prehlada. Imunologi, ki raziskujejo AIDS, menijo, da bo tekom desetletja ta virus prišel v krvi večine ljudi, kar pa ne pomeni, da bodo vsi zboleli za AIDS. Kot kaže, dobi bolezen kakih 10 odstotkov tistih, ki so okuženi z AIDS virusom, ostali pa lahko dajejo virus drugim osebam. Bolezen se razširja, domnevajo imunologi, le preko spolnih odnosov, ali pa s transfuzijami krvi. Doslej so bili predvsem prizadeti zaradi AIDS moški homoseksualci, v zadnjem letu pa zabeležu-jejo več primerov te bolezni med ženskami in v redkih primerih med ljudmi, ki so prejeli transfuzije krvi od darovalcev, ki so imeli AIDS. Žalosten primer tega je mladi hemofilik v državi Indiani, ki niti ne sme obiskovati več osnovne šole, ker šolski odbor izraža mnenje, da bi to lahko bilo nevarno sošolcem. Trditev imunologov, da to ni res, šolski odbor ne upošteva. Zdravniki kljub vsemu poudarjajo, da so transfuzije krvi skoro stoodstotno varne, ker lahko vnaprej ugotovijo, ali je določena količina krvi, darovana za transfuzijo, okužena z virusom AIDS ali pa ni. Ka-planoval je v frančiškanskih župnijah v Chicagu, New Yorku in Johnstownu, Pa. Leta 1957 je vstopil v ameriško vojsko kot kurat in je služboval v vojaški bolnišnici Fitzsimmons v Ft. Slocum, New York; v Denverju, Colo., v Fort Sillu; na Koreji, v Vietnamu, in v Livornu, Italija. Nato je šel v rezervo, študiral nekaj časa v Rimu in odšel v Avstralijo kot prostovoljec, da bi deloval med rojaki, katerim je pastiroval kot župnik pet let. Leta 1980. se je v vrnil v ameriško armado, ki ga je poslala v Illesheim in Ansbach, Nemčijo, odkoder je po polnih 4 letih službovanja bil poslan v Pusan, Korejo, odkoder so ga takoj poslali na zdravljenje v Brooke Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, blizu San Antonia, Texas. Letos bi moral oditi za eno leto v Panamo. Božji načrti za o. Philipa so bili drugačni. Ob 35-letnici mašniškega posvečenja se je boril že skoraj celo leto za življenje, po dveh težkih operacijah in radiaciji, ki ga je silno izčrpala. Težko je dihal in dolgo skoraj nič ni mogel jesti. V pogrebnem oznanilu so v bolnišnici zapisali: »Nekaj nad enim letom se je boril z rakom na heroični način. Njegova izredna potrpežljivost v trpljenju je bila v bolnišnici vsem čudovit vzor. Pogrešali ga bomo in spominjali se ga bomo. Veselimo se, daje odšel domov k Očetu nas vseh. Da bi le mi živeli po vzgledu, ki nam ga je dal!« Vstajenjska maša v bolnišnici je bila koncelebrirana 14. avgusta zjutraj ob 9. uri. Dvanajst jih je somaševalo, deloma so bili vojni kurati, deloma oo. frančiškani iz dveh fara v San Antoniu. Popoldan so truplo prepeljali z letalom v Lemont, Illinois. Glavni kurat bolnišnice je šel s sestro rajnega gdč. Sonjo Ferjan za spremstvo. Zaradi praznika Marijinega Vnebovzetja je bil pogreb v soboto, 17. avgusta. Innocenta spominjajo iz obiska med nami v poletju 1983. Za sv. maše so poslali tudi Tusharjevi iz Gilberta. Rajni o. Innocent je odšel domov k Očetu. Ni dočakal 59 let. Pa leta pri Bogu niso važna. Na podobici je bila natisnjena molitev sv. Frančiška: »Make me an instrument of peace.« Kjer je deloval je mir razširjal. Od Evrope, preko Amerike in Azije je v Avstralijo pohitel. Za seboj je puščal sledi pionirskega u-stvarjanja. Ko je že komaj hodil, je od bolnika do bolnika v obsežni sobi hodil, posameznike tolažil in blagoslavljal. Če-sto je sestro Sonjo, ki mu je stala zvesto ob strani več kot tri mesece ob bolniški postelji, prosil, naj z njim moli ali sama moli, da bo on lahko molitev poslušal. Zadnje jutro je šomaševal s kuratom. Do zadnjega je želel še delati in upal, da ga bo Bog ozdravil. Tik pred smrtjo je šepnil prisotnemu: »Pokličite mojo sestro.« Bila je za nekaj časa izven sobe, po zadnji noči, prečuti ob njem. Škof Roque je v govoru zahvalil Boga za krasen zgled duhovniškega življenja, ki ga je o. Innocent vsem dajal. Srečala sta se v Nemčiji, ko je bil Fr. Roque na obisku, in sta preživela nekaj ur skupaj. Poudaril je, da ga bo pogrešala vojska, ki tako rabi dobrih kuratov, kot tudi oo. frančiškani, ki jim manjka poklicev. Prosil je Boga, da bi rajni o. Philip izprosil za oboje novih poklicev, takih, kot je bil on sam. Vsem je bilo znano, da o. Innocent ni nikdar tožil. Dne 26. avgusta zvečer ob 7.30 je bila opravljena za rajnega Vstajenjska maša v fari Brezmadežnega Srca Marijinega v Scarborough. Ta sv. maša (dalje na str. 4) NA ZNA NIL O Sorodnikom, prijateljem in znancem sporočamo žalostno vest, daje po dolgi bolezni Bog poklical k sebi našo drago mamo in staro mamo AMALIJO KREK Rojena je bila 31. avgusta 1899, umrla 27. avgusta 1985 v Nursing Home v Mississauga, Ontario, Kanada. Pogreb je bil v petek, 30. avgusta, iz Skinner & Middle-brook pogrebnega zavoda v cerkev Naše Gospe s čudodelno svetinjo, kjer je bila za pokoj njene duše darovala sv. maša zadušnica. Žalujoči: sin Aleš z ženo Francko in otroci: Kathy, Miha, Peter in Andrej. Mississauga, Ontario Slovenski dan v Chicagu (Nadaljevanje s str. 2) nekaj novega: živahnost gibov in izvirnost korakov, večja discipliniranost je bila takoj opa '.a. Z njih obrazov je žarelo veselje in nekak ponos nad tem, kar so se nanovo naučili. V Chicagu je bil namreč na zdravniški praksi tri mesece dr. Bojan Rok, ki seje Slovencem predstavil kot direktor folklorne skupine Emone v Ljubljani. Potom mladih slovenskih izobražencev je zvedel za plesalno skupino in kot velik ljubitelj slovenskih plesov se je ponudil mladim za učitelja — da bodo spoznali stare, pristne slovenske plese vs£h slovenskih pokrajin. Učil je in razlagal o njih razvoju in pomenu. Plesalci so se hitro privadili drugačnim gibom in izvedli prekmurske, belokranjske, gorenjske, štajerske in pustne plese. Noše plesalcev so odgovarjale času in kraju, kjer so bili plesi izvajani. Učitelj plesov iz Ljubljane je bil zelo vesel, da ga je naša mladina vse po slovensko razumela in se z njim pogovarjala. Povedal je, da je našel v Ameriki disciplinirano mladino, voljno učenja in tudi slovensko zavedno. Plesi naše mladine so zelo pritegnili občinstvo. Zelo so bile prikupne Belokranjice v svoji belini in v izvajanju belokranjskega kola. Gledalci smo obžalovali le eno pomanjkljivost: premalo smo videli plesalce, ker so morali zaradi tapeciranega odra nastopiti spodaj v ospredju dvorane. Želimo, da te plesalce čimprej vidimo na domačem odru pri;. Sv. Štefanu! ,, Da bi bila proslava 3 5-letnice slovenskih radio oddaj čim , bolj slovesna, je odbor kluba sklenil, naj Lojze Slak ansam- ■ bel, ki je ravno gostoval po slovenskih naselbinah v Ameriki in Kanadi, ta dan priredi koncert v Chicagu. Ansambel sestavljajo trije godci in pet pevcev. V Chicagu so bili stari znanci, kajti nastopili so pred 15 leti; marsikdo se jih tudi spominja kakor jaz. Pevci so nekdanji »Fantje iz Praprotnega«. Praprotno je mala vas, malokatermu znana, nad Škofjo Loko v začetku Selške doline. Ker je podpisani ta kraj in razmere v njem dobro znano, sem tedaj vprašala enega med njimi, sicer daljnega sorodnika: »Le kje ste se naučili tega petja, saj glasbenih šol nimate?« »Sami dobro veste, da je za podeželske fante bila nekdaj edina šola cerkveni kor, pozneje pa samoizobraževanje.« Kmalu nato so izgubili v avtomobilski nesreči najboljšega pevca Šifrerja, novega so težko dobili šele po enem letu. Ansambel je izvajal zabavno glasbo in pel narodno znane pesmi. Nastopa sigurno in občuteno. Pozna se mu velika privajenost — v 20 letih je imel nad 2000 koncertov. Pozornost poslušalcev je na koncu zaradi dolgosti padala. Slovenci iz Chicaga so člane ansambla odpeljali v Willard, Wis., da so tam nastopili, in zopet nazaj, kjer so 20. avgusta v centru velikega Chicaga na Daley Plaza ob 1. uri pop. imeli svoj koncert in doživeli velik aplavz. Drugi dan je či-kaški dnevnik Sun-Times prinesel njih sliko in jih predstavil: Slovenci v zahodnem delu Jugoslavije. Kdor v Chicagu in okolici še ni član Slovensko-ameriškega radio kluba, naj se priključi vrsti rojakov, katerih skrb je obdržati slovensko besedo in pesem na radijskih valovih! - Ana Gaber Misijonska srečanja in pomenki... Innocent preživel en mesec svojih zadnjih počitnic, ko je bil še zdrav in predno se je vrnil na naš kontinent v New Jersey. Marsikdo se ga od takrat spominja in vrsta sv. maš se že opravlja za pokoj njegove duše, če bi še kaj potreboval, iz darov tukajšnjih faranov. Njegova sestra Sonja se je vrnila med nas za svoj zvesti apostolat v fari in MZA. Slovenski misijonarji so izgubili z o. Innocentom velikega prijatelja. MZA ga je štela vsa leta med svoje velike dobrotnike. Osebno sem ga štel med svoje zveste prijatelje. Ljubil je znamke za misijone. Molimo zanj! Naj počiva v miru! Rev. Koroški Slovenci umreti nočejo (Nadaljevanje s str. 2) Avstrijska državna pogodba je položaj koroških Slovencev bistveno spremenila. Kot po ljudskem glasovanju 10. oktobra 1920 tako so avstrijski Nemci po podpisu avstrijske državne pogodbe leta 1959 naglo pozabili na svoje obveznosti in obljube ter začeli sicer previdno, toda vendar načrtno pritiskati na slovensko narodno manjšino. Naloga ponemčevanja je zopet v prvi vrsti pripadla šoli. Kjerkoli Slovenci dvojezične šole naravnost ne zahtevajo in se za njo ne prijavi dovolj učencev je ta zamenjana s čisto nemško šolo. Od števila dvojezičnih šol v času angleške zasedbe Koroške jih je doslej ostala le peščica. Slovenska narodna zavest na Koroškem nikdar ni bila trdna in razse-žna, v narodno mešanih krajih, pa komaj opazna. Nemški šovinizem na Koroškem ta položaj spretno izkorišča, da bi čimpreje zaprl še one dvojezične šole, ki pričajo, da Spodnja Koroška le ni še čisto nemška dežela. Ponemčevanje slovenske narodne manjšine podpirajo tudi državne in deželne oblasti, nemške gospodarske, kulturne in politične ustanove ter organizacije, to svoje delovanje pa seveda skušajo previdno prikriti, da ne bi dajale vzroka podpisnicam državne pogodbe za povpraševanja o izpolnjevanju določb te pogodbe o zaščiti slovenske narodne manjšine. Koroški Slovenci so svetovnonazorno razdeljeni v katoliški in socialistično napredni tabor. To jih v zadnjih letih ne moti, da ne bi nastopali v obrambo svojih narodnih pravic skupno tako na Koroškem kot pri zvezni vladi na Dunaju, pa tudi pri iskanju podpore v Ljubljani in Beogradu. Njihovi vodniki trdijo, da je to stvarno edino možno, podpora Ljubljane je za nje bistvena, brez nje bi se njihov položaj oslabil in poslabšal. Iskanje pomoči v Ljubljani veže katoliškemu delu koroških Slovencev roke pri presojanju razmer v Sloveniji, pa tudi v načelnem in praktičnem boju proti komunizmu in proti komunistični propagandi, ki je na slovenskem Koroškem obsežna in močna. To vprašanje je za Slovence v Ameriki, posebno za one, ki so zaradi svojega boja proti komunizmu, zapustili svoje domove v Sloveniji, važno in zasluži posebno obravnavo. When a child gets chicken pox, the rash goes away but the virus does not. The virus leaves the skin and goes through the nerves to the spinal cord, where it lies dormant. Everyone who has had chicken pox has the virus. Although doctors do not know what activates the virus, they do know that it does become reactivated in some people. When that happens, the virus in one of the spinal segments crawls down that nerve to the skin. This time, however, the rash does not appear all over the body; it just appears on the area of the skin fed by the particular nerve that is involved. The rash has the appearance of little blisters on a red base. Usually, it is just on one side of the body, on a line where the affected nerve runs. In fact, the word “shingles” is derived from the Latin word for girdle for the rash often comes around onto the abdomen and chest like a band. It also may appear on the lower spinal segment, along a line from the leg to the foot. Shingles is a very common disease. Of those who reach age 85, half will be affected. About 80 percent of cases are in people over age 50. Doctors suspect that is because as people get older the body’s immune system declines. Yet, fewer than 5 percent of those who have shingles experience more than one episode. The skin rash for shingles, like chicken pox, usually lasts from ten days to two weeks. Usually, the patient has pain, caused by the inflammation of the nerve root, but it is possible to have shingles with no pain and no itching. Most people get a very mild case of herpes zoster. Unfortunately, some suffer severely during an acute episode. In a small percentage of cases--perhaps because the nerve gets badly inflamed—the virus causes post-herpetic neuralgia--persistent pain. Doctors define persistent pain as that which lasts more than two months after the rash has healed. There is no cure or specific treatment for shingles. Creams and ointments do not help. Among the treatments often recommended to relieve the pain are medications ranging from aspirin to narcotics. When pain is confined to a s specific nerve area, an anesthesiologist may perform a spinal block, an injection of novacaine, or other medication, that will relieve the pain or destroy the nerve. If all else fails, the anesthesiologist may suggest cutting the nerve that produces the pain. This replaces the pain with a numb sensation. Some doctors attempt to prevent the development of postherpetic neuralgia by prescribing steriods for those shingles patients over the age of 50 who have the highest risk of having persistent pain. Unlike chicken pox, which is very contagious, herpes zoster is spread only by direct contact with the sores or with a hand that has touched them. This contact can cause chicken pox in an individual who has not had the disease before, although a shingles patient cannot give someone else shingles. The only people the shingles patient should be isolated from are those with leukemia or other cancer. This is because those patients often develop a very severe type of chicken pox. Metod Ilc arrived safely in Euclid, Ohio Wednesday evening after completing a 661 mile bicycle ride from Charlotte, North Carolina. He spent five days on the back roads and said the mountains of Virginia were a definite challenge. He said the trek was, “an experience and a half.” Some of the roadways were lined with trucks throwing a driving wind which just about threw him from the pavement. “It was a dangerous situation,” he said. Križman has been appointed Chairperson for the Committee on Administrator-In-Training and Preceptor Programs by the Ohio Chapter of the American College of Health Care Administrators. While at St. Augustine Manor, he trained 38 Administrators through clinical training, a requirement for licensure. He takes pride in the fact he trained the former and current Administrator at the Slovene Home for the Aged. For instance some healthy adults sleep three or four hours every night without any apparent ill effects. Others may need 10 to 12 hours, of they’ll feel tired the next day. A person has insomnia if his inability to sleep interferes chronically with his efficient daytime functions, regardless of how many hours he sleeps each night. Surveys have shown that as much as 30 percent of Americans suffer from insomnia to some degree. Insomnia is not that difficult to cure--------it only gets worse the more that you worry about it. You can help yourself fall asleep each night and wake up refreshed the next morning by following a few simple steps: First, rid yourself of stress before bedtime. Don’t dwell on the day’s unsolved problems. Don’t say “I should have done that.”. Instead, think*‘I could have done that, and will soon.” Regular daily exercise, such as jogging, swimming, tennis or brisk walking, will help you sleep better at night. But occasional, one shot exercise does not directly influence sleep that night. Some quiet exercises before bedtime can help you fall asleep more easily. To help yourself relax, lie down on the floor or sofa and relax your body, one part at a time. Breathe from your abdomen, and as you inhale, feel the breath seeping into all parts of your body, gently messaging all the places that are tired and sore. Now, keep breathing this way and concentrate of the rhythm of your inhales and exhales. You will find yourself slowly relaxing, getting ready for a good night’s sleep. Establish a definite bedtime routine for yourself, and use your bedroom for sleeping. Don’t use it for working, studying or watching television. You should think of your bedroom as a quiet, restful place for sleep. Do Not take naps during the day. Plan to go to bed at the same time every night, and get up at the same time evert morning. This is all part of a healthy bedtime ,routine. Don’t sleep more than you need to feel refreshed, because excessively long periods in bed seem to relate to fragmented and shallow, sleep. So instead of worrying, turn on the light and read. And relax: Worry will only keep you awake. If insomnia continues to be a persistent problem after you have tried all of the above suggestions, it may mean that something more than the current situation is disturbing your sleep. American Home •Ameriška Domovina SLOVENIAN MORNING NEWSPAPER AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA, SEPTEMBER 6, 1985 Avsenik Ensemble concert Sept. 14 Frank Sterle’s Slovenian Country House restaurant (in celebration of its 25th year) will sponsor the Slavko Avsenik Ensemble from Slovenia for a one night performance at the Cleveland Music Hall, E. 6th St. and St. Clair Ave. After the concert a celebration will take place at Sterle’s restaurant on E. 55th and Bonna Ave. Some tickets are still available at Sterle’s restaurant and at Tony’s Polka Village, 971 E. 185 St. and all Ticketron locations. The Avsenik Ensemble, under the watchful eye of Slavko Avsenik are now in their 32nd year of entertaining with the music they originated, the Oberkrainer sound. Their music has shown its popularity with immense record sales and the high attendance at their many concerts. The origins of the ensemble date back to 1953, when Slavko Avsenik, with encouragement from his older brother, Vilko (who was at the time a member of the Radio Ljubljana Orchestra), went to the station for an audition, which incidently, he passed with ‘flying colors. Shortly after, Slavko formed an instrumental trio, which evolved into the “Gorenjski Kvartet”. The following year the dynamic duet of vocalists Franc Koren and Danica Filipčič joined the group. A new era of Slovenian folk music had begun. Throughout the past 32 years the Avsenik Ensemble received numerous awards of distinction. Among these are 30 gold records, a diamond record and a platinum record. They have traveled millions of kilometers on their road^o success and have performed to sold out halls in Europe, Canada and the United States. The Avseniks have written almost 600 original songs and performed them for dignitaries ranging from heads of state to athletes throughout their career. Slavko Avsenik besides being an excellent accordion player and band leader had been a ski jumper, qualifying for the Yugoslav ski jumping team. He explains his success, “We are always playing for people!” Slavko Avsenik is also known as the “Johann Strauss of the 20th Century,” and to many as the “Worlds Polka and Waltz King.” He is a musician who is rarely away from his piano accordion. He is constantly involved in the writing of either a new polka that moves your heart, a romantic waltz, or just a humorous tune that will bring much laughter. He has written close to 600 original melodies and will surely not stop there. Members of the group are: Franc Kosir known as the “happy go lucky” entertainer, with his trumpet and zany stage antics that will bring a smile to everyone. He is very much a sportsman, being an avid cross country skier. Mik Soss, the baritone and bass player maintains the foundation of the rhythm in the Jpand with his swinging patterns. He is an avid water skier and enjoys all water sports. He is also responsible for the organizational and financial matters within the band. Albin Rudan, the quietest member of the group is known by the nickname “Paganini of the clarinet” because of his smooth technique and velvetlike sound.
