Na shod so zlasti povabljeni: South End Improvement liga, Trgovsko združenje na Broadwayu in 55. cesti, South End Civic Club, kanonik Rt. Rev. J. J. Roosevelt odgovoren Rim, 7. januarja. Rev. Hiše so jako moderne. F. J. Kern. F. J. Kern. Napravil bo krožnike, latvice in pi-skrce. Torej jih lepo obkolimo. At times we also take the opportunity of writing to some of our members, who by some excuse or other are losing interest in the Society and reminding them of their duties and obligations to the Society. Again at times we write and ask other young men to become acquainted with our Society. Now, you may ask, "Why are you so set on making every man a Holy Name member?" Why? Because it is a Society for every Catholic man. Don't take our word for it. Of course, we are Holy Name men, and it is only natural that we should say that you should be one also. • No, don't listen to us, but if you are a Catholic, and we know that you, are, then inquire find study our Society. On Sunday, January 9th, the Fifth Anniversary of the St. Vitus Holy Name Society, you will have a wonderful opportunity to observe and become acquainted with some of the principles of the Holy Name. Not from the sidelines, but shoulder to shoulder with the Holy Name. For we, the Holy Name Board, extend an invitation to every man of our parish, members and non-members, young and old, to join our ranks on Sunday morning, January 9th, and help in the celebration of our Fifth Anniversary. Remember, you need not be a member. We only ask that every Catholic man join us for this one day. Here is our program for the celebration: Saturday, January 8th: Confession, afternoon and evening. Sunday, January 9th: 1.—Meet in the school at 7:45 a. m. 2.—Leave school at 8:10 a. m. 3.—Blessing and dedication of banner at 8:15. 4.—Mass at 8:30.—Holy Communion in a body. 5.—Breakfast in the school. 0.—Amateur show at 7:30 p. m. May we add that movies will be taken of the proceedings if weather conditions will permit. We are sure that you will accept this invitation and be present to assist in this our celebration. HOLY NAME BOARD. OREL CLUB NEWS Orel monthly meeting is Thursday, Jan. 13, 1938. Every member should make an effort to be present. During 1937 our meetings were very well attended, so let us keep this up during 1938. Make it a habit to be at the Orel monthly meeting, and see all your friends, See you on Thursday, Jan. 13, 1938 at 8:30 p. m. "SPANGLES" Charlie Winters is on the committee to get the school hall in tiptop shape for the Amateur Show and the Dance which will follow. His assignment was to buy some Spangles for the floor to make it more slippery. He asked for spangles at a novelty store on St. Clair Ave. The owner asktd him what kind of a machine that was. Poor Charlie! JUNIOR JOURNAL This Sunday every Junior should be in the school hall promptly at 7:45 a. m. The Juniors are going to partake in the Holy Name's fifth anniversary, by participating in the procession and receiving Communion at the 8:30 Mass, after which the Juniors will receive a delicious breakfast with the Seniors. The most important meeting of the year will take place Sunday afternoon at 2; elections will be held and officers will be installed, so be present and do yourself and the society good by using your voting wisely. And by the way the ping-pong-tournament finals will be held. And from what I hear we will see a very good movie. —Juniors' Journalist. -O- NEW BANNER! One of the colorful features in the celebration of the fifth anniversary of the St. Vitus Holy Name Socicty will be the blessing of our new banner. Cost was of no importance in securing this work of art, which is the finest money could buy. The official emblem Is hand embroidered and set in a brilliant sunburst of gleaming gold on a background of deep blue. The reverse side is made of blue skinners satin with the inscription of our society in gold silk embroidery. It is indeed a fitting representative of what is fast developing into the largest spiritual organization in the history of our parish. Mr. Gregorač, one of our better known members, has been delegated to carry and care for the banner during the ceremonials. NEWLY ELECTED OFFICERS Last Sunday the Holy Name Society held its annual election. W. Tome was elected president succeeding A. Martincic. For vice president Joseph Brodnick received the nod: the office has been vacant the last six months. Frank Brodnick was elected secretary, replacing Stanley Frank. As assistant secretary Vic Tome was chosen. Charles Winters is again the treasurer. To the board were appointed Matt Mlinar, Andrew Sire, Victor Cimper-man, Louis Krajc, and Frank Dejak. Lou Krajc was on the board last year, the others being appointed for the first time. Old board members were Michael Kolar, Martin Svete, John Levstek and W. Tome. FIFTH ANNIVERSARY The greatest day since its organization will be celebrated tomorrow by our Holy .Name Society; for tomorrow will be the fifth anniversary since the Holy Name came into existence in our parish. And to observe this great occasion the society is blessing its banner. The whole day will be one of intense activity. At the 8:30 o'clock Mass our Rev. pastor will be celebrant and offer sacrifice for all the living members of the group. Members will Teceive Holy Communion and renew the pledge of the Holy Name. To this Mass have been invited all men who are members of the Holy Name in other Slovenian parishes. Father Duffy of St. Paul's ' Shrine (Euclid Ave. and 40th St.) and the board of the Cleveland Deanery of the Holy Name wijl also be present. And a special choir of our own members will sing the Gregorian chant during the services. A breakfast follows in the school hall. During this time the new officers who have been elected for the year 1938 will be installed. Not one member who was on the original board of the Holy Name will be found on this new executive board. But the organization is as active as ever and we can look to the future with even greater prospects of successes. In the evening the celebration will be climaxed by a gala amateur show which the organization has sponsored. Twenty dollars in cash prizes will be awarded to winners and competent judges have been selected so that everyone will have an equal chance to win. A special feature includes Judy Dell, popular songstress of the air from WGAR, and Mi'. John Grdina, famed magician. After the show there will be dancing for all with music supplied by Matt Mlinar's orchestra. A great day and a gala program arranged for everyone especially the men to participate in. Why not make a day of it and be present the whole day? You will be one who will help to make this affair go down in history as one of the outstanding events in our parish. Let's all be there! MOVIES OF THE PARADE As was mentioned several weeks ago, if the weather permits, motion pictures of tomorrow's celebration of the Holy Name Society will be taken. Stanley Frank will be the camera man. The pictures will become property of the Society and serve as an in-voluble memorial of this red letter day in th- history of the Society. INVITED GUESTS Among those invited to the ceremonies are Father Kremer, diocesan director of the Holy Name Society. All former officers and members also received invitations. Other Slovenian parishes were also given bids. EVERYBODY IS WELCOME You need not be a member to attend tomorrow. The requirement is that you receive Holy Communion with the group. Ernest Jerman: MY EXPERIENCES IN SPAIN (A Translation from the Slovene) (Continuation.) Many of my readers know Madrid which is the newest and" perhaps the most modern capital of Europe. It is also the wealthiest in art treasures. Today readers cannot come here but if they could they would see what I did: ruins of university city, the palace, Lyria, with its works of art in ruins, and the arts galleries demolished,—destruction which had taken its toll to the very center of this unfortunate city. The works of art, however, were removed to Moscow. This, too, I shall relate presently. , It seems necessary to me, however, to give some preliminary causes for the revolutionary uprising; for I have observed that mistaken notions are prevalent and this because authentic reports are lacking. Did you know, for instance, that in the last four years, since Spain became a republic, Soviet Russia gradually changed the country into a colony of her own and there instituted her headquarters for the dissemination of propaganda for Western Europe and South America? No one knew this before and it was the civil war which first revealed the fact. Did you know that Barcelona and Malaga were centers of the third internationale? Did you know that in these cities it was generally impossible to cry out in the streets "Viva Espana!"? That hundreds of people were suffering in prisons just because of this, because they publicly demonstrated their love for Spain? No! No one knows this who did not actually live in Spain! For the last four years the cry "Viva Rusija!" has been the motto of Marxian Spain, whose main objective has been to serve as a propaganda bereau for bolshevist Russia. With the exclamation "Viva Rusija!" on your lips you could butcher, rape, rob, steal. Even today in these parts that are under red control there is no government prosecutor (as there has not been all four years) who has courage to summon in court a criminal who boasts the Soviet in-signe. If the prosecutor did, it would be the end of him! Why, I myself saw a government prosecutor shot together with the condemned because he did not inflict as much punishment as the rabble demanded. Later his head was carried about town in a parade. The Republican regime disgraced the army. It had a large number of officers imprisoned and ordered many commanders shot. Readers will recall the deaths of Generals Batesa and Godeda in the Barcelonian fortress. Was it not perfectly natural that the officers resisted first, that the armada was the first to revolt against such tyranny? The soldiers after all swore allegiance to the Spanish flag and not to the Soviet! For they ended their oath with "Viva Espana!" and not "Viva Rusija!" For they swore to defend their country with their very lives against foreign supremacy. What would our army do which has sworn loyalty to the Jugoslav country, if it would be incited to dishonor its own fatherland and become enthusiastic over Soviet Russia? Could the army tolerate statues of Stalin and Lenin thirty-three feet high erected in the public markets of Barcelona, Albacete, Malaga, and other cities? What if a Slovenian soldier became a second Franco and would swear once more that he will Rive his all, life and possessions, just to preserve his country from foreign domination? This is only one reason which directly impelled every patriot to take up arms without mentioning countless other social, religious, and cultural aspects which Republican deeds—not the republic—provoked the people to hatred and aroused in them a desire for liberation. The signal for the strike was the murder of Galva Sotela. Who was Sotela? A man of exceptional talents; a great leader, great speaker, an un- „,.,. _T „ , . impeachable character, an honest wlth the New Year P°PPin8 out °f a heart. His opponent had to listen to him with the same esteem as his own followers. At thirty years of age he was already a minister and Spain can boast of no better financial system than that which the young finance minister, Sotela, inaugurated. This young man who had the strains of a genius in him had to be removed. And he was removed as only the bol-shevists know how. He was strangled. On the following day revolts broke out in every garrison, beginning with the one in Spanish Morocco. That was on July 17th, 1936. (To Be Continued) A THOUGHT FOR THE NEW YEAR There is too much said at New Year's about turning over a new leaf. Are the old leaves all so badly written that we must hasten to forget them? Is the blank whiteness of the untouched page more pleasant to the eye or more fortifying to the will than those closely written, underlined, untidy, but familiar pages which make up the story of one's life? —Selected ♦ * » Ponder over this selection and soon it shall come to mind that with the New Year, the past—that of 1937 is only "water over the dam" which cannot be gotten back and which was ushered, out with roar and thunder of many parties. How many of us, however—who knew well that upon a review of our lives in 1937, would feel we have failed somewhat in our spiritual obligations, took it upon ourselves to visit "Our Lord" and detaching "ourselves" from the world for awhile, mediated and thanked our Savior and Christ Child for the privilege of seeing the dawn of another year. Had we forgotten to remember our Lord in 1937. If so, let's guard against recurrence of such a plight in 1938. Let's remember our Lord in our thanks and celebrations. Begin with Communion at 8 o'clock Mass, Solemn Reception at 3 p. m. and the Social to top it all. Let's be there, Juniors. Junior Jottings The Juniors find themselves quite busy these days, organizing their unit, preparing for the reception and trying to get some basketball practice sessions in too. . . Incidentally Father Celesnik is working very hard on the reception and deserves much credit for his efforts. . . Likewise to the Executive Committee . . . The Basketball Boys are coming along swell and under coaching of Joe Debenak should round out into a good combination. . The boys incidentally are looking for competition and will try to book games with other Holy Name squads. Let's hear from you. Appreciation The St. Mary's Executive Board wishes to express its appreciation to the Illirija Cnoir uiiits for the fine musical renditions made at Christmas and New Year's services. The Board wishes to compliment the parishioners upon their generosity in the Xmas collection. May God Bless your efforts. The Executive Council bag, was also a humdinger. "Those tots are just too cute for words," was a voice in the dark that described it more or less perfectly . . . Guests seemed to have been attracted from ail over. There was Mrs. Vidmar from St. Vitus, and her entire family, including her son Jim and his Mrs. from away out in Iowa . . . Jim, by the way, said he still remembers those indoor games on 62nd St. . . . Imagine, after all these years . . . Those Boben sisters also added to the interest and din . . . John Sin-tic, our he-man from Ohio U„ appeared noticeably captivated by the charming ensemble of Dot Poje . . . Sylvia Prostor seemed lost for a time because someone was apparently missing . . . And friends are still wondering wh Frank Recher and, Jack Cer-cek left so early . . . Then there was plenty of excitement on E. 209th St. on Christmas Eve, when it was formally announced that Miss Mary Pri-moznik is engaged to Mr. Frank Une-tic. Mary is one of our faithful Socialists and generally active in our parish younger set. , THOSE GYM CLASSES We understand that regularly scheduled interparochial C.Y.O. league games will start soon. We'll let you know as soon as we get anything official. In the meantime, boys still have practice in Roosevelt school on Monday and Wednesday nights of this week. Mi-. Joseph Stankus, former star basketballer at Collinwood High under coach Clifford, and now on the governing board of C.Y.O., has become our coach. Christine's MEN'S SUNDAY We started to call it the Holy Name Sunday!! But, we know that attention will be called to it in that way by our neighbor in the St. Vitus H. N. column in the splendid and enthusiastic manner he always features all Holy Name news. We will restrict ourselves to a. general appeal to all solidly Catholic men and young men of our district, begging them to join their brethren in faith in other parishes and make use of this coming Sunday for a glorious manifestation of grandest Catholic action we mortals are capable of through reception of Holy Communion. You younger married men seem so often conspicuous by your absence from the sanctuary railing!! Here's a new year, and another January Holy Name Sunday!! A good occasion to start showing a little backbone along these lines! Then there are all you young men, so expert on the dance floors, so shy in connection with sacraments. Could you not make a special effort on this one Sunday to be among those, who fear not, to recognize Our Lord and publicly manifest their reverence for His Name? May we not expect at least a majority of you grads of our own school to be in the front ranks and in front pews on this occasion?! We cannot refrain from putting a word of commendation for the members of our Slovenian branch of Holy Name Society, who will all receive Holy Communion in a body at the 7 o'clock Mass. Really, that's all that he have of the society. We hope, though, that some of the other group will join in the procession before Mass and show their willingness to the whipped cream to top the night in the form of Johnnie Pecon's swing-copations. Don't forget that YOU are invited! DESERVED CONGRATULATIONS These to our friends and neighbors, the Holy Name Society of St. Vitus. You are turning the fifth milestone, and that without a stumble. They are five years of glorious achievements in spite of difficulties which beset every beginning. There were, no doubt, brickbats from without and discouraging deflections from within. O, we all know them and their story! We know how some of you had to bite your lips and plod on doggedly in spite of it all; and that not for so many dollars and cents but for spiritual ideals, immaterial aims, the glory of Christ and, through Him, for the betterment of Catholic manhood. As we hear it from afar, you are all, or nearly so, comparatively young men, married and single. More power to you!! So much the more do we admire your successes, and so much more are we inclined, on this occasion, to doff our chapeaus and sincerely congratulate you and your spiritual director, Msgr. B. J. Ponikvar. May your energetic activities continue, your achievements grow and your influence increase until every real Catholic man in your parish will be under your banner, forming a living dam against blasphemy and indecency, reveling in being a practical Catholic and a real MAN. We are really sorry that we cannot be with you tomorrow night. TOMORROW, SUNDAY, NIGHT Folowing their unfailing custom our older men will close the day with ,a Slovenian comedy and social in the evening. Mrs. J. Perpar from the neighborhood of St. Vitus, her brother and our old friend Teeny Bambich, Miss Kasunic, also from out of town and renowned for her amateur appearances in her locality, together with our own inimitable Mr. and Mrs. Hochevar, Joseph Cinco, and, by no means least, Rudy Krall compose a cast which can't possibly disappoint and which, on the contrary, is a guarantee for plenty of stomache laughs and uproarious doings on our stage. You'll be sorry if you miss the farce which will open the evening festivities. Of course, there will be cused. It isn't that we are not willing to be with you; we just can't be. And may we not suggest that some other Sundays be chosen for those commen foregatherings which could bring untold amount of good to all of us. Would it not be advisable, fur" ther, to choose representatives from each branch, or use the diocesan union delegates, who would meet quarterly and plan ahead judiciously and thus avoid competing schedules? The little tableau, (Continuation.) The dinner, cooked in Egyptian style, was delicious. I can't tell you, however, of what the meal consisted, for I myself didn't know. That evening, we took a walk about town. On some dimly-lighted streets we had to keep one eye on the pavement in order to avoid stepping on sleeping natives. By all appearances many of the lower class simply lie down wherever they happen to be when night comes. Morning finds them up again, wearing the same soiled garments. It is easy to understand why we sensed a distinctive body odor when near them. We passed men in long robes, men in rages, men in modern dress with a fea on their heads for the oriental effect, and tourists like ourselves, as we walked under the dazzling white lights of Cairo's main boulevard. Scon we were crossing the broad bridge of the well-known Nile River. We stopped as we were about halfway across and then paused to look over the railing to siee if it really was as muddy as they say it is, an by gooy, it was. I don't think I've ever seen such muddy water. Along the banks were houseboats. On one side they were pitiful looking structures; on the othere were the "floating palaces" of the wealthy. Palm trees, graceful swaying palm trees, were bending over the swirling waters. It was simply beautiful. Being tired, we retraced our steps, and soon were under the bed covers, sound asleep. All too soon a dusky servant knocked at our door with our breakfast trays. We got up in a hurry, but it didn't take us long to assume the "take your time" attitude of the natives; it was too hot to rush. We hired a dragoman (a guide) to show us around. First we visited one of their mosques. Being a white lady, I was allowed to enter their place of worship, a privilege denied the native women; they have to do their praying at home. Since we were not of the Mo hammedan faith, we had to hav broad yellow sandals laced over our shoes so we wouldn't desecrate the place. It was very awkward shut fling about in these flappy "overshoes," but we managed to get around. Of course we tripped every once in a while, but that was to bs expected. In the vestibule is a large public fountain. Here the men are obliged to cleanse themselves each time before entering the temple proper. As the guide said, the men wash them selves as follows: "First their faces, then their neckses, their handses and then their feetses." No soap is used This form of "bathing" is repeated five times a day by the strict followers of Mohammed who faithfully answer every call of the muezzin to prayer. But in spite of this fre quent dash of water here and there, they still appear to be in need of a good scrubbing. , The interior of the mosque was ra ther bare. There were no pews or benches of any sort. In one corner was a sunken bathtub. Our guide, in all sincerity, urged us to step in the tub, make a wish and rest assured that it would be granted. Not being superstitious, no one made a move. Then, seeing the guide was offended, one of the gentlemen complied with his wishes. In a small anti-chamber we saw the tomb of one of Mohammed's descendants. As we re-entered the large hall, the guide made us walk under the arch extending from the pulpit to the wall, starting with the right foot, and saying "Good luck" at every step. This was supposed to bring us good luck for the rest of our days. Whether I will get my quota is questionable for I purposely began with the left foot. The next item in our itinerary took us to the edge of the desert. In a long line all sitting on their haunches in the shade of palm trees, were brightly saddled camels all ready and waiting to be hired. There were also a number of donkeys to be had, but, having the choice of the two, we chose the camels. We each had a personal attendant who assisted us in many ways. It was an easy task to get on the beasts because they were seated; the fun uvvvimuiH lllUUt,!!
