ZARJA ^DAWN OFFICIAL ORGAN OF THE SLOVENIAN WOMEN’S UNION OF AMERICA 'VOL XXIX — No. 4 APRIL, 1957 LETO XXIX — Št. 4 A JOYOUS REV. A. URANKAR, O.F.M. As the message of Easter and its glorious gladness rings out wide and far, the whole world through, I, your spiritual advisor and moderator come to you also with sincere Easter greetings and a heartfelt prayer: May the Risen Lord give you all, the members of the Slovenian Women’s Union, and the members of the Supreme Board His choisest blessings, and stay with His graces for Wb-a glorious spiritual Spring and Resurrection. When we were very young we wondered, why it was said that Easter is the greatest feast, greater than •Christmas. We found it difficult to prefer the story of Christ’ Resurrection to the heartstirring narrative of the Angelic ■Choirs chanting: Glory be to God in the Highest. Perhaps the reason was that Christmas appeals to the heart, while Easter appeals to the mind. It is true: Easter is the greatest day of the Christian Calendar. Everything we cherish, everything we hold sacred, depends on the miracle of Easter. Our joys, faith, hope and charity, our truths, our Sacraments, even our Church rests secure only on the fact of Resurrection. Until this world falls into nothingness, from which it was drawn by God’s omnipotent Hand, the miracle of Easter will be told again and again as a solace to the suffering, enlightening for troubled minds and for the strengthening of the wills that are weak. Easter brings light and life, courage and determination to go on in spite of disappointing doubts and the destructive forces of despair, so often offered by the world. So, let us put aside our cares and worries and trust in God. Confidence is what the Risen Lord brought to us, confidence in the everlasting power of God, and confidence in ourselves which can be nourished and held up only by the faith and hope given us by and through Easter. Let the night of life be dark and dreary, let the hearts of the world be weary, we who believe in Easter, we Christians have no right or reason to be gloomy and downhearted. God Himself has crushed the chains and barnacles of spiritual slavedom. The Dawn of Easter brings the sunshine of Grace, the solace of eternal happiness and the power and strength of Divine Friendship. Once again: A very glorious Easter to you all! THE PRESIDENT’S MONTHLY MESSAGE EASTER (Sunday following the first full moon after March 21) The time of the year when the earth awakens after a long winter's sleep has always brought great joy. Long before there was a Christian religion, the ancient peoples celebrated the triumph of life over death in nature. The Anglo-Saxons in northern Europe held a festival of honor of "Eostre,” their goddess of springtime. When Christianity came, it was natural for them to keep the name Easter for the special Sunday set aside to commemorate the Resurrection. On the evening before Good Friday, Jesus and His disciples ate their supper of unleavened bread, bitter herbs and wine in celebration of the Passover. The next day Pontius Pilate ordered Him crucified; on Sunday, Jesus arose from the dead, to bring courage and rejoicing to all His followers. That event has become the most solemn and joyful festival in the Christian calendar. There is an old legend that the sun dances on Easter morning. The egg has always been a symbol of new life, and the tradition of the Easter rabbit is so old that no ■one knows exactly why he is supposed to bring the eggs. All these customs, some of them older than the holiday, are part of the celebration each year for Easter. To complete this festive day, we Catholics are duty bound to receive Holy Communion. If possible do so in a group of S.W.U. members, along with the junior members! That is the true meaning of EASTER. HAPPY EASTER TO YOU ALL, JOSEPHINE LIVEK, Supreme President CONGRATULATIONS BR. NO. 10! BRANCH NO. 10, CLEVELAND, Collinwood, Ohio, is celebrating their 30th Anniversary with a Dinner on April 27th at the Slovenian National Home on Holmes Ave. The Branch will commemorate the 30th year since their first meeting on March S, 1927 held with 10 members present. They met at the home of Mrs. Mary Glavan, now deceased; and their first secretary was Mrs. Mary Sluga, who is still a loyal member. Mrs. Mary Urbas, their first vice-president, has been their faithful president for many years and is beloved by all the members. The most outstanding officer of the branch was Mrs. Frances Susel, who was their secretary until her death in 1954. Mrs. Mary Camloh in whom the ladies have great hopes, is the present secretary. Branch no. 10 will surely have many more years of continued success—as in the past—to assure them a historically prominent place in the life of S.W.U. *• * * WELCOME TO FONTANA! So many of our members are newly-settled residents of the sunny city of Fontana, California, that they have organized their own group, to take part more actively in all the functions of the Union. We welcome them and wish them heartfelt good luck! * * * HAPPY EASTER TO ALL OUR OFFICERS AND MEMBERS! Albina Novak, Supreme See’y. -------------------------------------------------- j SLOVENIAN WOMEN’S UNION FRIENDSHIP CIRCLE TWELVE years ago at one of the* meetings of the Board of Directors of our organization, my idea to inaugurate a Scholarship and Benefit fund was enthusiastically received. The officers as well as the members promised their utmost support. To hasten the project, a Friendship Circle was formed with a minimum life membership of $20.00. Since then 88 people joined this circle, who with their generous contributions helped to realize our goal. We are publishing their names for two reasons: First, because we are proud to call them "Zveza’s Friends”, second, for the students and others, who benefitted from this fund, to know their benefactors. Forest City, Pa...................... 20.00 FRIENDS ’Twould never do for God to live across the street, or in the house next door, where we should daily meet; so in His wisdom and His love He sometimes sends His angels kind to walk with us—we call them “Friends.” Just friends—one word! But letters can express a wealth of sympathy and pure unselfishness. One syllable —a single breath can form it—friends! Yet, o how much our happiness on them depends! When trouble comes, or loss, when grief is ours to bear; they come, our friends, with words of cheer, our load to share. How could we face defeat without a friend’s caress? Had we no friends to praise, how bare would be success! ’This not God’s plan that we shall see Him face to-face, yet He would hedge us in with His abounding grace. And so His messengers of love to earth He sends, they’re angels, but we know it not, and call them “Friends.” The unknown author of the above lines has beautifully and reverently expressed our thoughts of you—dear Friends—in a way that I could not. It is our sincere wife It that the ensuing years will bring all our Friends many blessings and true happiness. We sincerely invite you to also become "Zveza’s”' Friend and share in our charitable work. Marie Prisland ACTIVITIES No. 2, Chicago, III. — Our monthly meetings are very interesting and aJso enjoyable. How wonderful it would be, if the attendance was bigger! Happy Birthday to all members who celebrate during the month of April, Warm brown eyes, a gracious smile, and a pleasant manner—this is Frances Globokar, our First Supreme Vice-President and a very active member of Euclid, Ohio’s Branch no. 14. So, it seems fitting to take this opportunity to wish Frances the very best on her fiftieth birthday, April 25th. Born and raised in Forest City, Pa., Frances came to Ohio after her marriage to John Globokar. Now living in Euclid, many people have come to know the Globokars and their son Vince, not only through Globolcar’s Service Station which they own and operate; but also through the many Slovenian activities they take part in. Her mother, Mrs. Frances Gerchman, who is also a member of Branch no. 14 and who lives with them, has also aided Frances in her work; and until her own illness has helpe
