Supreme President’s Message
Summer vacations are over and with fall yours truly has arrived home and happy to be hack and into the grind again which I believe each one of you are also! Now we all shall be busy with our daily chores, Retting ready lo store gardens of vegetables and fruits lor the winter months.
Europe is beautiful, and each country has a beauty of its own. Countries that we traveled were Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Yugoslavia, Italy and France. Most of all we enjoyed driving thru tne mountain passes. Many a time it seemed that we could just reach out and touch a handful of snow for high up the mountains tops were still covered with snow in the summertime. I wish that each one of you will be fortunate to be able to go on such a trip and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
The S.W.U. will sponsor similar trips next year and I urge you to consider this for your “vacation of a lifetime.”
A new campaign is in progress! The Founders Campaign started September 1st, 1964 and will be in progress until June 1st, 1965. Now is the time that we will be able to honor our Founder, Marie Prisland. Sue is the mother ol our Zveza and it would make her very happy and proud it we all tried our best and write up new members. This Campaign is also for you - to be able to earn yourself extra cash money and also earn a beautiful gold ring with the Zveza emblem or a gold charm bracelet or even both, the ring and bracelet. Read all rules, regulations and details on how you can win these beautiful prizes and cash in this issue.
State Conventions were held last month in Biwabik, Minnesota, A<> metonia. I ’a. and Pueblo, Colo. Congratulations and hope to hear wonderful news reports and recommendations for the progress of our Zveza!
Cook Hooks have been selling very fast and we are now having another large supply printed. Branches and members wishing to have cook books on hand for the Holidays, which are creeping up very fast, should order your supplies now and eliminate the holiday mailing rush. Books still sell for $2.75 including postage.
I wish a great success to the Ohio State Convention Bazaar and Style Show which will be held by the Combined Branches of Cleveland on October lltli, and hope that all members will attend this gala aftair. All committees are working very hard to make this affair the best ever!

“FOUNDERS’ CAMPAIGN
For New Members!’’
In honor of our S.W.U. Founder, Marie Prisland and all the organizers of our many branches, a new membership campaign named “Founders’ Campaign” began Sept. 1st. It will close June 1, 1065. Prizes include cash for every new member enrolled PLUS special awards for the top workers: beautiful gold Zveza emblem rings and charm bracelets. All information can be found on page 229 in the Minutes of our last Board of Directors’ meeting.
We hope every branch will wish to pay tribute to their own charter members and organizers by enrolling many new members and that together, the results of this drive will honor our S.W.U. Founder, Marie Prisland in this, the 39th year of our organization!

ON THE ILLINOIS-INDIANA STATE CONVENTION
The Illinois-Indiana State Convention held Sunday, Auk. 30th at Oglesby, 111. was very well-attended and successful. All the Supreme Officers including yours truly were present.
Holy Mass was offered at 11 o’clock a.m. by Father Mayes. His sermon was inspiring and gave us the message to work hand in hand — attend meetings and help in the many ways possible thru the organization.
The meeting itself began at 2 p.m at the Dickenson House and was very successful and well-represented. The Oglesby Br. 89 members were joined by those from No. 85, DePue, No. 24, LaSalle, No. 20, Joliet, No. 2, Chicago and No. 95, So. Chicago as well as visitors from Milwaukee, Wis. and Supreme Vice President, Marie Floryan. State President, Mildred James presided.
New ideas were discussed that brought great interest to the meeting. Former Supreme President, Josephine Livek also took part in the convention and 1 am certain she was very happy to see that the group considered this state convention very important as she always did propose that they be held on a yearly basis in the respective districts.
At. this time 1 wish to thank tile following who helped make this day a memorable one: the members ol Br. 89, Oglesby for their nice hospitality in accepting the State Convention in their city and for their good will; secondly, to members, delegates and visitors who traveled the long distance to be there and our two chauffeurs from Chicago, Mi'. Železnikar and Mr. Nusko.
Congratulations to State President, Mildred James of Hr. 95 for conducting such a wonderful meeting.

A MESSAGE FROM THE STATE PRESIDENT OF ILLINOIS-INDIANA
Conventions are fun !and let my first words be those of gratitude to Branches 2, 20, 21, 89 and 95 lor attending this session. Most impressive was the Mass and inspiring ser moil given by the Rev. C. A. Mayes of Holy Family Church, which was a great comfort to me.
After Mass a hearty welcome lor dinner at the Gar-zanelli Supper Club, and there fine food, service, and homey atmosphere made the picture complete.
I have come away from the convention greatly impressed with the cordiality of our Supreme President, Antonia Turek and Josephine Livek, our past Supreme President whose kindness and warmth will not be forgotten, Albina Novak, our Supreme Sec'y, Marie Floryan, Vice-Pres., Ann Podgoršek and Vicki Faletič, Auditors, for their kind remarks, and enjoying seeing all of you so very much. To Frances Gaspich of Br. 20, who has rendered a most valuable service as our articulate Rec. Sec’y, I must cannot appraise adequately the values of her services. It far ex ceeds the compensation we pay her. I can assure you that the session was stimulating, exciting, and rewarding, where you can see the fruits of our labor enjoyed in many ways.

Two lovely young members have received the Slovenian Women’s Union scholarship award for 1964-1965. They are:
Kathleen A. Kikel, a member of Branch 25 in Cleveland, where she is a dilligent worker in Drill teams and Junior activities. Her entire family is also active in Zveza programs. Kathleen is at present a student at Kent University of Ohio, planning to become a teacher.
Beverly Hlasta, is a member of Branch 55 in Girard, Ohio. This fall she will enroll at the Youngstown University of Ohio and will major in languages to prepare herself for teaching profession. She is active in Junior circles of her branch.
Our sincere good wishes to both students for success in their chosen field.
The last convention was a lovely affair with enjoyable programs, delicious dinners and most of all with sisterly atmosphere prevailing all through the convention. It was a pleasure to be part of it.
Consenting to your request that I compile the history of our organization for the National Library of the University of Ljubljana, I have now completed this task.
To the manuscript, distributed at the last convention, I have added four additional pages containing the following:
Zveza’s Impressions.
Date, place and the name of the Organizer of each branch of the Union.
Branches, having Drill Teams and names of their Captains.
Reference to the present Youth Activities and their Leaders.
Comments on the history of the organization which were received from members, friends and also from Europe, are very gratifying. I am happy that I was able to com-
plete this work which required hundreds of hours and many months of preparation and research.
Beside forwarding Zveza history and 22 lbs. historical material to the National Library of Ljubljana I also mailed historical material pertaining our organization to the University of Minnesota, which opened a Slovenian section in their Immigrant Archives. They graciously invited me to this opening which I could not attend because of convention work.
I am very happy that our first stock of Cook-Books is almost sold and a new addition is in print. A few changes have been made for the improvement of the book. I hope our excellent Cook-Book sales will continue.

Report of Supreme Secretary
My heartfelt greetings to you all. This being our first Directors’ meeting after the 13th national convention held in Chicago from May 17-20, it should be very interesting. I know that the participants of the convention will long remember the general program and the proceedings of the Assembly. I hope most sincerely that everyone carried home a wholesome message and that we have all gained through the mutual contacts and the important discussions.
The decisions made were of utmost importance for the future progress of our organization and the membership will accept them as necessary. Letters were mailed to all branches explaining the new assessment which will take effect in January, 1965 and also regarding the dues to be paid by members attaining age 75. These decisions were made on the requirements of the State Insurance department which individual organizations have no power to overrule. The laws are made for the protection of the membership and must be recognized as such. I'm certain that if the subordinate officers — most important of whom are the presidents and the secretaries — will fully explain completely to their members the new assessment regulation, it will be no problem. One thing we must all remember is that it is our duty and privilege to protect the good standing of our organization and keep it in the highest esteem for this is the only way we can honor the hard work of our pioneer officers and members for posterity.
The gain in the past six months is not what usually shows in our statement. The convention took a big slice and so did the death claims and Zarja. The various awards which were paid in this past term also took their share. The complete listing is given in the six month statement. I hope that the second half of 1964 will be more fruitful so that we will reach our half-a-million mark in our assets before the year 1965 is upon us.
We gained some 50 new members since the convention which is remarkable and I know that some of our workers are waiting for the new membership campaign which is the best incentive for promotional activity.
My vacation, as most of you know, was spent once again in conducting a group tour to Yugoslavia. The August Kollander Travel Agency of Cleveland, Ohio has given us the very best service possible. Our members appreciate the arrangement of the special group fare which is almost h lower than the regular fare. Many are planning to make the trip next year, which God willing, will be my tenth trip. This year I was back in 4 weeks, that is leaving on June 16, returning July 13.
Our Zveza day in Lemont on July 19th was another wonderful opportunity to meet with our faithful members. However, the attendance was not as big as other years. We should all try to bring out crowds to this Slovenian Holy Hill next year on July 18, 1965 which will be our 26th consecutive pilgrimage and picnic.
I will conclude my report at this time and make further suggestions during the discussions. Best wishes to you all.

Upon examination of this report, you will see that there was a small gain in the six months due to the heavy convention expenses.
Zveza Day in Lemont was again a wonderful success. This year, we celebrated the 25th anniversary of the pilgrimage. Our thanks to Fr. Okorn, our spiritual advisor who offered the mass and gave an inspiring sermon. Many members spent an enjoyable and uplifting day.

Report of the First Supreme Auditor
My warmest greetings to all of you. Since all the directors have been re-elected to their respective offices at the convention, I am sure we shall endeavor to work harmoniously as we have in the past for the success of our great organization and membership.
We have audited the books of the Secretary, Treasurer, President of the Scholarship fund, managing Editor, and found everything in perfect order. We also examined the safety deposit box at the bank containing savings accounts, bonds, and all other important documents and these, too, were found in perfect order.
We must thank Branch 2, Chicago, which was in charge of our Thirteenth National Convention, held in their city in May, for the wonderful accomodations made for the delegates and the warm hospitality given us during our stay in their city.
It was very satisfying that the pre-convention membership drive was a huge success. Our branch did very well in the drive. We were in competition with much larger branches and we fared well. As a result, yours truly was crowned one of the princesses at the convention, which was a great honor. Many thanks to the Supreme Officers and delegates for the gifts and greetings received. This shall always be in my memory.
Our branch shall celebrate its Thirty-Fifth Anniversary, October 7th. A dinner will be held for all the members.
We were saddened recently by the death of our organizer, Mrs. Helen Krall, who always worked hard for the progress of our branch and organization. May her soul rest in peace.
Minnesota Zveza Day will be held in Biwabik, Sept. 13th. A chartered bus for the event is already filled to capacity-by our members.
It is wonderful to see Toni Turek and Albina Novak look so well after their much deserved vacations abroad.
May the Good Lord shower many blessings on a very successful meeting.

Report of the Second Supreme Auditor
Welcome officers of the Supreme Board. It is customary that we get together at this time of the year to fulfill our duty and help conduct these meetings with fellow officers in order to devote special efforts toward prosperity in the near future of the S.W.U.
It is with pleasure that I wish to state in looking over the records, they were an excellent and clear summary, and found in complete order.
We at Branch No. 25 have acquired many new members in the past campaigns. Our meetings are friendly and comfortable, because the members create their own good time by playing their favorite games and prepare excellent food to enjoy.
Right now they are anticipating a successful outlook on the forthcoming bazaar that will be sponsored through the combined branches. It will be held October 11, 1964 at 6:00 o’clock at the American Yugoslav Center, 20713 Rech-er Ave., Euclid, Ohio. Many beautiful prizes will be given away (for a small donation) in tickets. They are available from your branches. Dinners and sandwiches will be served. Booths with various articles to purchase will be on display. Branch 25 intends to make their booth as attractive as possible in order to stimulate business. “When S.W.U. pleases the people, then the people are pleased with S.W.U.” That is the sole principle of our organization.

Report of the Third Supreme Auditor
My sincere greetings to you all, and I am happy to be with you again.
We have gathered here to check the ledgers of the supreme officers, namely the Secretary, Treasurer, President of the Scholarship Fund, also the Editor of Zarja (Dawn); we also made a visit to the bank to check the investments and bonds in the safety box, and I agree with the other officers, that we found all records in very good order.
Since the convention I have attended Zveza day in Lem-ont which was well-attended. The High Mass was offered by our Spiritual Director, Rev. Claude Okorn, who also delivered a very inspiring sermon.
Yesterday I was at the Ill.-Ind. state convention held at Oglesby, 111. with branch No. 89 as hostesses. We attended Mass at Holy Family church, later dinner, then the meeting followed.
We did have an enjoyable time and the ladies of branch No. 89 were very gracious.
This concludes my report. My warmest regards to all.

Editor’s Report
Esteemed Directors,
Hearty greetings to one and all — after our recent Convention, Zveza matters have brought us together once a-gain.
Since that time, everything has been running smoothly and in good order. The monthly duties concerned with Zarja have dealt with the first six months of 1964 and in those months, we concluded the Pre-Convention Membership Campaign, observed Mother’s Day in our May issue and brought out all the Pre-Convention as well as Convention reports and notices. Since the Convention was such a big task, it did take the better part of a year, part of it in anticipation and preliminaries, part used in preparation and partly, it dealt with tying up loose ends and giving the final report after the Convention closed.
As far as the cooperation between officers and members and Zarja goes — it couldn’t be better. In fact, it is creating more and more interest as time goes by, with more officers active in Zarja reporting. The will of the membership is the criteria by which all of our Zarjas take form — they reflect the views and desires of all.
In addition to my duties as editor, 1 was happy to serve on the Convention Committee in Chicago and to help arrange whatever I could to make the Convention more memorable for those attending. It was not merely a social gathering, but an event planned to increase the good will and interest of all the delegates — those hard working Zveza members who represented their home branches. I’m certain that they had many fine hours of pleasure and of satisfying and educational work to report on when they returned home after the sessions concluded.
I wish to thank all of these representatives for their astute and careful consideration of all the points brought up at the Convention and especially for all their comments about Zarja. It will be according to the wishes stated there that I shall try to continue in my capacity as Editor. Much the same, I have enjoyed my association with the members of the Supreme Board and wish to thank you all also for your graciousness and kindness before, at and since the Convention.
We in Chicago have kept on with our work, and this year, in addition to the heavy task of the Convention dinner and program in May, we again arranged the annual Zveza Day in Lemont on which committee I also served. It was a highly successful event and was a true reunion of members from as far away as Indianapolis, Cleveland, Milwaukee and West Allis — of course, also from all over Illinois. We must surely thank all our loyal members who attend the pilgrimage each year and make it a success.
Zarja brought the news of all our Zveza doings to the many who have not had the opportunity to attend themselves — either the Convention, Lemont, or any of the state days. In this way, we have created for them a feeling and interest in all activities, even tho they may not have personally participated. Those who have participated find it enjoyable to read of something they have seen or witnessed.
I wish to compliment all our supreme and state officers and branch officers for the spirited way they have kept activity going and the fine material they have sent into our publication to make it a true voice of the S.W.U.
Since brevity was the watchword in all our considerations at the Convention, I will conclude this brief report at this time and hope to offer more in the line of suggestions as the discussions progress. Once again, thanks to all of you -— my co-directors and to all the membership for the vote of confidence placed in me.

REPORT FROM WISCONSIN:
Greetings to the Supreme Board:
My report will be very short as there hasn’t been very much undertaken, since the convention. I have tried to do my best in all my undertakings and will try to keep up my work to the best of my ability.
I	attended Zveza Day at Lemont, with a group from branch No. 12 and also our branch No. 43. The trip was very pleasant and I am sure all the members enjoyed themselves.
I	am very proud of our Wisconsin branches, but am still looking forward to the 1000 membership mark.
At this time, I would like to congratulate and compliment our Supreme Board for their very fine work.

The meeting was adjourned at 6 p.m.
The president called the meeting to order Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. Prayers were led by the president. All Directors were present.
The Directors, acting upon the correspondence and invitations received from State Convention committees made the following list of official representation: Penna. State Convention, Sept. 13, A. Turek and V. Faletič; Minnesota State Convention, A. Novak, Ohio Bazaar, local officers; Br. 95, So. Chicago 25th Anniversary, C. Leskovar. The President regretted not being able to travel to Colorado this year for the annual State Convention Sept. 20th but is planning an extensive auto trip to the western states next year and will visit all the branches at that time. For this year’s event, she will send a representative, who will bring the greetings of the Board of Directors to Pueblo.
Discussion was then opened on the selling of the S.W.U. cookbook, “Woman’s Glory - The Kitchen” which is being distributed from the Supreme President’s office in Cleveland. The president reports that when the supply is depleted she will give a complete financial accounting. The Board approves additional books be ordered for printing this fall in time for Christmas mailing. Comments received by members of the Board and thru correspondence show that the cookbook is well-received and that the demand for this type of book is greater than ever. All Directors were pleased with the fast sales and commended all those who have participated in the production and sales of the cookbook.
A report was given by the Finance Committee Secretary, Mr. Prisland on future investments to be considered.
Discussion was introduced on the topics brought out at the Ill.-Ind. State Convention, concerned with the possibility of eligibility of junior members as delegates to a future convention and the further promotion of state activities. The Directors felt that interest is improving in state meetings and that branches do give a busier yearly program to their members if they attend state conventions or host them. The state convention forms the stage for new ideas which are then brought back to the branch for further discussion and development.
The Junior Page writer’s yearly award was stipulated by the Board and she was commended for the fine column that appears monthly in Zarja. Regina, as she is called, has brought forth many good thoughts and ideas for the juniors to follow. It was hoped by the Board that the Junior Director’s activities will be forthcoming on this page.
Clerical help in the Home Office which was approved at the National Convention to be arranged at the descretion of the Board, was discussed. Subsequently, the Board set an hourly wage for part-time office help beginning immediately.
The meeting was adjourned for luncheon at 12:20 p.m.; reconvened at 1:30 p.m.
The President reported on the preparations for the Ohio branches’ big, yearly Bazaar on Oct. 11, 19G4 at the Rechar Ave. Hall in Euclid, Ohio. The Bazaar featuring a style show, baking demonstration and drill exhibition is an effort of the combined branches. She also invited all the officers to attend.
Director M. Prisland, in her capacity as Finance Committee Secretary, directed the officers to a discussion on long-range investments. She suggested that the president begins training in this work and in accordance with her promise at the convention, Mrs. Prisland turned over a number of books on this subject to Mrs. Turek. She will guide and apprise her whenever investments are in order and enable her to learn this work eventually.
As president of the Scholarship Fund, Mrs. Prisland has asked her daughter, Hermine Dicke, to take over the task as secretary of this committee to deal with the correspondence that is necessary in order for this committee to function. Mrs. Dicke will begin as of January, 1965.
The Directors were in agreement with Mrs. Prisland and appreciated her foresight in these matters. The Foun-er stated that these two committees being so important, she felt thoughtful planning must be given to training her
successors.
The History of the Slovenian Women’s Union has now been completed with the addition of four pages dealing with the organizers of Zveza, impressions of the society and list of the drill teams. The editor of the History, Mrs. Prisland has spent countless hours in this work so that now the manuscript is finished. Upon completion of the History, she assembled numerous other items of historical interest, clippings, photos, and books to make a portfolio of our organization for the National and University Library at Ljubljana, Slovenia. Many of the items were sketches and impressions written many years ago and kept in Mrs. Prisland’s personal archives. She has sent this large library of facts to the above named Library for their section on Slovenian Immigration in America. The Directors commented on the interesting material and hoped that it will aid students of history both now and in the future. Mrs. Prisland added that many items are irreplaceable; however, that she still has a wealth of Zveza history for use at some future time, perhaps in our own S.W.U. library.
A new membership campaign was next on the agenda for discussion and the Directors entered the subject with great spirit. On the suggestion of the Secretary, Mrs. Novak, it was decided that the campaign be held in honor of the Founder of S.W.U. in this the 39th year of the organization. Mrs. Prisland added that the campaign honor all living founders of the branches. Each branch knows of their own organizer and can pay tribute to her work by getting members in her name. The Founders’ Campaign opened Sept. 1st and will close at midnight, June 1, 1965. Cash prizes are as follows: $1.00 for every Class B member, .50 for every Class A member, .25 for every junior member. New members will also be counted on the point system. Class B member gives one point to the solicitor, Class A gives % point and junior member is *4. point. Therefore, a solicitor must have four junior members to get one point, 2 Class A members for one point or 1 Class B member for one point. Every solicitor (worker) who reaches 25 points will receive, in addition to the cash prize, a 14 carat gold ring with the Zveza emblem or a charm bracelet with the Zveza emblem as a charm. For 50 points, the solicitor will receive both jewelry gifts plus cash prize.
Thus, the campaign will honor the Founders and the workers will reap nice profits.
All qualified applications for membership, in order to be eligible, must be received in the Home Office from Sept. 1, 1964 to June 1, 1965, postmarked not later than midnight, June 1st. All application forms must be signed by the solicitor (worker) and it is that name which qualifies for the prizes.
Since many branches wish to join forces and work for one solicitor, lier name must be signed to the application forms to receive credit. Those wishing to work individually may do so under the same rules.
The Directors hoped that each branch will wish to honor the founder if she is living, or one of the charter members or president of the branch.
The Founders’ Campaign — Sept. 1, 1964 to June 1, 1965!
The Board in discussing the future Zarja editions, recommended that the Editor solicit advertisements for the Chirstmas issue of Zarja and that all issues except December, be kept in the 16 page format since there have already been five 32 page issues in 1964.
The meeting was adjourned at 6 p.m. by the president who led the prayer and extended wishes for those homeward bound.

Rosary: school of the spiritual life
My rosary, if I would hold It in my hand asking you: What is this? everybody will say: This is the rosary, father. That’s right. It is the rosary. What is so important about it? We all know that the rosary is a long prayer repeating the same prayers again and again. We almost say: we don’t like it so much. We think so because we do not know the meaning of the rosary.
The well known lawyer and convert Dr. Jarke when a member of cabinet in Austria, was asked by certain in-telectual who chanced to find him praying the rosary: “How can a man of your intelligence and position bother with the rosary?”
The devout state official gave the following reply: “My friend, just as eating and drinking are necessary for man, so is also prayer. But praying the rosary is for the soul nourishment and drink and at the same time the resume of the Gospel, a summary of Christianity, a consolation for Christians, a joy for the saints, a song of praise for the angels, and adoration of the Holy Trinity."
Modern scholars direct their energies towards turning out good and timely books and educational methods for our youth. Great importance is rightly laid upon visual instruction. For making progress in spiritual life there is according to the Liturgy of the church no better book, no more effective visual instruction than the rosary. For while saying the rosary we are beholding pictures, we are turning pages of the picture book which God himself has opened for us.
While praying in a church in Rome an old man held a pack of holy pictures in his hand. He looked at the first one for a short time, said a short prayer, kissed the picture and going to the next one, did the same. Did not this man pray well? In saying the rosary we should do the likewise. While saying ten Hail Marys and looking upon the pictures of each decade, the heart and mind are occupied with weaving roses of love, veneration, contrition and prayer.
For many who do not love the rosary the greatest difficulty and true reason for their aversion seems to be found in this, that they do not care to behold and study these pictures. They do not want to be disturbed in their confortable groove. But only he Is really religious man who puts into practice the lessons of the rosary.
In the school of the rosary are to be found the most sublime and elevating teachings. In the rosary we find the best Teacher. We need only to take it in hand and sit at the feet of the Master. It tells us how he selected His mother from among the humble and pure, how he passes over the proud, how he exalts the humble and leaves the proud empty; how He Himself was obedient from the Crib to the Cross; how He lived, suffered and died on the Cross for us and for the sins of the world; how He will come again with the great power and majesty to judge the living and the dead.
Yet many Christians have no true love for the rosary, because their love for Jesus and Mary has grown cold. Nevertheless, saying the rosary is both practical and necessary if we are to become masters of the spiritual life and face the life’s problems.
MINUTES OF THE ILL.-IND. STATE CONVENTION
The state convention was held on Sunday, Aug. 30, 1964 at Oglesby, 111. with branch No. 89 as hostesses.
We met at Holy Family Church and attended 11:00 A.M. Mass offered by the pastor, Father Mayes, who delivered a sermon pertaining to women, and how we should get together and review our aims.
At noon we had dinner served at Garzanelli’s Supper Club. The welcome address was given by Nancy Kleczew-ski, sec’y at 89, who also introduced Father Mayes, guest at the dinner who said grace before dinner.
Later we proceeded to "Dickensen House” where the meeting was called to order by Mildred James, state pres. The following supreme officers were in attendance: Pres. Antonia Turek, Vice-Pres. Marie Floryan, Sec’y Albina Novak, Treas. Josephine Železnikar, Auditors Ann Podgoršek, Vicki Faletič, Frances Gaspich, also former pres. Josephine Livek.
Minutes of the last meeting held on Sun., Aug. 25, 19G3, at Chicago, 111. with branch No. 2 as hostesses were read and approved,
A report by each the branches was called by the pres.
Josephine Železnikar, pres. Branch No. 2 spoke of their projects the past year, especially the 13th Nat. Convention, which was held in May, and also Zveza Day held in Lemont on Sunday, July 19th, this being the 25th Anniversary of Zveza Day. Rev. Okorn offered the Mass.
In the afternoon they had Needlework Sale which their Sewing Club made and donated so that the branch made a nice profit.
Albina Novak, sec’y of Branch No. 2 said the branch must have activities also for juvenile members; at their branch they have parties and games and are fortunate to be able to get prizes and gifts for the children reasonably and they look forward to these parties.
Marie Floryan, supreme vice-pres., also sec’y of No. 17, West Allis, Wis., spoke and said she was glad to be here.
Theresa Marentič, vice-pres. of No. 20, said altho there were 5 from Joliet there was no delegate, but the members are enjoying every bit of the proceedings.
Mrs. Vranich of No. 24 spoke of their branch having 117 Adult and 7G Jr. Members. Mrs. Vranich and her husband celebrated their golden wedding anniv. on Aug. 23rd.
Mrs. Angela Strukel, Sec’y at No. 24 spoke about how hard it is for her to collect dues.
Branch No. 85, DePue, 111. had 4 members present but no delegate.
Branch No. 89 Pres, Frances Meglich, told of fine cooperation for today’s affair; every one was willing to help. Mrs. Frances Nemeth asked that the minutes for today be reported in Zarja; she also suggested that branches that have more than one delegate, to select a Jr. as second delegate to give them ideas of the branch business.
Branch No. 95 was represented by 4 members. Mildred Paropat, Sec’y, gave a report on how to make extra cash, also how they take care of older members, especially those in nursing homes. She also spoke of their 25th anniv. to be held Oct. 14th.
No. 99, Elmhurst, 111., sent a letter as they were sorry, could not attend this year.
A letter was read by Frances Meglich from Mrs. Marie Prisland, Honorary Pres., regretting not being able to attend.
Albina Novak mentioned she has colored slides from Europe and willing to show them at branch meetings.
The time and place of next state convention to be decided later.
Meeting adjourned with prayer led by pres. Mildred James at 4:10 P.M.; then we were served refreshments and had dance music.

ACTIVITIES
No. 7, Forest City, Pa. We had our annual picnic at Joseph Kameen’s resort — all of us, adult and 20 junior members. There was swimming, sail boating, playing games and singing. They had a very good time and are looking forward to another picnic. The ladies prepared lots of good refreshments, too. Thanks to Jos. Kameen for the hospitality and to William and Ix>uis Kameen for all they did for us
—	it was greatly appreciated.

No. 14, Euclid, Ohio. We had a very nice attendance at our Sept. meeting, which included the initiation of a new member, Rose Stuzen. We also discussed at length the Oct. 11th bazaar to be held by the combined branches and we would like to see as many members as posible.
Our treasurer, Mary Iskra and her husband spent three weeks vacation-touring Washington State in their brand new Oldsmobile, and Mary reports they enjoyed a wonderful trip.
Member, Donna Zadnikar, recently became the bride of Mr. Richard Miller, and we extend to them our best wishes for a long, healthy and happy life.
Frances Prijatel is recuperating at home after surgery on her legs in a hospital; Jean Pluth is home now after surgery and Anna Zadnik is also on the sick list. We pray for a fast recovery for all of them.

No. 17, West Allis, Wis. Welcome back our European vacationers: President Toni Turek, Secretary Albina Novak, our organizer Josephine Schlos-sar, Mr. & Mrs. Val Stroj, Mr. & Mrs. Jack Stariha and Mrs. Vida Yakos. From their reports they certainly enjoyed their sojourns.
Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Oman on the arrival of a baby girl, Ann Marie. Janet is the daughter of our vice-president Vickie Kastelic, the grandmother title coming to her twice this year and to great grandparents Mr. & Mrs. Tael and Mrs. Mary Kastelic, the paternal great grandmother.
I	hope no one has forgotten our Usinger Sausage Demonstration and Card Party on Tuesday Oct. 27, at 7:30 P.M. at Mary’s Hall, So. 60th & W. Madison St. Proceeds from this event go towards our new Church Fund. Let’s make it a big success. Come one, come all! Bring your
friends and relatives. We assure you that you will enjoy yourselves and also help us In our cause.
Having such nice weather, Vickie Kastelic, Frances Piwoni, Julia Tael and I decided to attend the Illinois Indiana State Convention in Oglesby, 111., on Aug. 30. Arriving there Saturday we drove to De Pue to visit with Mr. & Mrs. John Kopina, Sr., and the family and friends. Later on we visited Mrs. Josephine Livek and Mrs. Mary Cenkar. It’s been many years since I was there and it was wonderful to visit with friends once again.
The State Convention was very well attended and the hall was filled to capacity at the banquet. This affair was well represented and we from Wisconsin were very glad to participate. Oglesby can be very proud of having such a fine turnout; it shows that the best interest is in having these State Conventions for further progress of the S.W.U.
We are very grateful to the Branch and the above mentioned friends, also to the Jerin’s Silver Leaf Motel for their wonderful hospitality shown to us during our stay which will live long in our memories.
A speedy recovery to the sick and ailing members. A visit or a card would be greatly appreciated.
The best way to have a friend is for you to be one!

No. 20, Joliet, III. Congratulations are in order to the members of KS KJ celebrating the 70th anniversary of their organization on August 16. It turned out to be very successful with the cooperation of their wonderful committee headed by Louis Stef-anich and John L. Jevitz. For this occasion, our Honorary President of Zveza was also invited. Mrs. Marie Prisland was the first woman on the Supreme Board of KSKJ as Supreme Vice-President. Her address for this celebration was most outstanding and very well applauded. While in office of the KSKJ — as only woman on the board — she achieved many deeds which even after these many years cannot be forgotten. After the church ceremonies, the celebration continued at St. Joseph’s Park where Mrs. Prisland met many old time friends. It was a rare occasion to have Mrs. Prisland with us and every one enjoyed reminiscing about good old days.
Congratulations to the Altar and Rosary Society recently celebrating their 73rd year with a High Mass and dinner. Many members belong to our Zveza branch. Monsignor M. J. Butala was celebrant of all these commemorative masses.
Best wishes to Joanne Muster who became the bride of an officer of the USA, Samuel Hoobler. The wedding was one of the most beautiful of the season. After the church ceremonies the reception was held at the Officers’ Club rooms at the Arsenal. Joan is

the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Frank Muster and her mother, Josephine, is for many years the chairman of our auditing committee and our past secretary and supreme treasurer.
Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Ancel, (parents of my son-in-law, Edward) celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in August, followed with a reception at Edward Ancel’s home and spacious garden. They have three sons and three daughters. Mrs. Ancel is our member almost from the beginning of the branch. We wish them many more years of health and contentment, with God’s blessings.
Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Michael Papesh, (No. Broadway), who celebrated their 40th anniversary with church ceremonies and a party at their home. Mrs. Anne Papesh is our member for many years and one of our first bowlers. Her son, Mickey, is funeral director and their daughter Gloria Farkas is one of our former drill team members.
Our treasurer, Jo. Sumic, and pres, of the bowling league, Helen Golobitch have returned from a month’s vacation motoring through the west to California and other States, meeting old-time friends.
After a two week vacation at Rhinelander, Wis., Olga Ancel with her husband and six children returned home refreshed for another year. This is their annual vacation spot.
Our condolences to Mrs. Jennie Benedik who lost her brother, John Dolenc, who made his home with the Benedik family; also to Mrs. Josephine Muster who lost her brother recently. He resided in Cleveland, Ohio and passed away at the age of 50. Surviving are his widow Carl Menart, a son in the Army, two daughters Virginia and Linda and two brothers Joe and John Menart. May they rest in peace!

No. 23, Ely, Minn. The annual picnic was held in Zup’s cabin on Farm Lake; a pot-luck supper was served, and attending members reported a wonderful time.
At the business meeting presided by president, Mary Shikonja, a membership drive was planned. It was suggested that this recommendation be voted upon at our next meeting. The door prize went to Molly Zupanich. The September lunch committee were: Margaret Pecha, Justine Boldine, Mary Knapp, Frances Colarich and Florence Markovich.

No. 32, Euclid, Ohio. At this time, we announce again and invite all of you to the combined branches BAZAAR! Tickets are available at the meeting and thru the members. The place is the American Yugoslav Center, 20713 Recher Avenue, Euclid, O-hio, on October 11, 1964. I’m sure you are all familiar with this hall. Our branch has its own booth this year and lately we have had very good and busy fingers crocheting pretty edges on hankies, crosses, sewing aprons and other hand-made things that Slovenian people are noted for. Don’t forget the date, October 11th and we are aiming for success!
We congratulate our president Theresa Potokar and her husband Anton on their Golden Wedding Anniversary which was celebrated August 22 with a Mass of Thanksgiving at St. Christine’s church. They are grandparents twenty times and great grandparents twice. Mrs. Potokar is president of our branch for twenty five years. We wish them many more happy years together and may God bless you both!
A get-well message goes to our sick member, Rose Tekavčič who is recuperating at her home, after she was attacked by a robber at her home on East 185th St. We hope and pray that she and all our sick will get well soon.

Mr. and Mrs. John Uranich, Sr. of 835 Tenth St., Peru, Illinois, celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary Sunday, August 23, with a Mass at 8 A.M. in the St. Roch’s Church. Members of the family breakfasted at the new Holiday Inn after Mass.
Mr. and Mrs. Uranich greeted friends and relatives at an open house reception from 2 to 6 P.M. in Knotty Pine Hall, 1047 Eleventh St., La Salle.
The celebrants were married Aug. 30, 1914, in St. Roch’s Church by the Rev. Louis Kastigar. Attendants were Mrs. Paul Ferentchak of La Salle, Mrs. Joseph Omatta of Joliet, Lawrence Uranich and the late Anton Uranich.
The anniversary was celebrated a week in advance for the convenience of out-of-town grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Uranich are the parents of eight children, including John Uranich Jr. of La Salle, Mrs. Audie (Mary) Bozik of Eau Gallie, Florida, Mrs. Frank (Toni) Garcia of Chicago, Mrs. Edward (Theresa) Cigolle of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Mrs. Francis (Marjorie) Strong of Sebring, Florida, Mrs. Hank (Dolores) Bruder of Genoa, 111., and Jerry Uranich of Orlando, Florida. A son, Henry, died in 1935.
The couple also has 16 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
For many years Mrs. Uranich operated a grocery and later a tavern in La Salle until his retirement in 1960.

Due to the hot weather, it was decided that the summer meetings would be postponed until September 23rd. At that meeting plans for the up-com-ing events were discussed which included:	the Christmas party, bake

No. 50, Cleveland, Ohio. Our Aug. meeting was really “Mary Bostian Day” as our large group of members helped me celebrate my birthday. Oh, what a party! A large cake baked by Fran Sietz was brought out and had only 3 candles on it, so it was easy to blow out! Fran is such a lovely, thoughtful person, and full of energy!
I	was presented a beautiful Mother of Pearl rosary plus other gifts. I just can’t express my feelings enough as it made me so happy and quite surprised! I feel you are all my real sisters and will never forget you. It’s wonderful to be part of such a fine group. My thanks to each and everyone and to all who donated such luscious desserts and baked goods.

No. 55, Girard, Ohio. Still a vacation month as I write, and the last day of August is at hand. It has been a good month for some of us; also had its sad days for some. I just received two calls letting me know that members, Mary Svesko, and Mary
Turk were hospitalized In August. Get-well wishes for a speedy recovery were sent out to them. And to any of our members who are 111 and not reported we also send along best wishes for a speedy recovery through Zarja, our faithful monthly visitor.

No. 56, Niles, Ohio. In spite of the storm and rain we had our Aug. meeting with a very nice attendance and everyone had a good time. It was at the home of Frances Stanec.

A number of our members vacationed pleasantly this year. Mr. & Mrs. Ignace Logar flew to Calif.; Mr. & Mrs. George Stanec motored to New Jersey and Conn.; Mrs. T. Rocher visited her daughter In West Va.; Mary Moler and son, Lewis, visited Donald Moler and family at New Haven, Conn. While there, we saw the most powerful Lasar beam at Yale University where Don works. It was most Interesting.

No. 63, Denver, Colo. The summer has gone again and with fall upon us our meetings have resumed.
September 27th was the day of our annual picnic about which will be reported later. Father Mihelich, our Spiritual Director showed slides of the World’s Fair. We are grateful to him!
Our branch attended the Colorado State convention held In Pueblo on Sept. 20, in a chartered bus.
One of our long-time members Mary Kvas, got a chance to renew friendships this summer with members from other branches of the Union in the midwest. She also attended the annual pilgrimage of S.W.U. In Lemont. She enjoyed the trip very much.
Mrs. Zemlak, our Mother of the Year, and her daughter Mary, made a trip to Europe this summer. They traveled to Fatima, Lourdes, Rome and all through Yugoslavia. They brought back many happy memories.

Mrs. Lauriski passed away on Aug. 10 after a lingering illness. She was born Mar. 25, 1883 in Yugoslavia, coming to the Canon City area as small girl. Ohio State Convention -Bazaar and Style Show This Month!
October 11th Is the date at the Slovenian Social Home, 20713 Recher Ave., Euclid, Ohio. Doors will be open at
10	A.M. for you to be able to purchase all kinds of delicious baked goods, noodles and all kind of beautiful handiwork made by members of the Slovenian Womens Union of Cleveland.
State Convention meeting will begin promptly at 10 A.M. in a special meeting room and will be presided by the new state president, Mary Bostian.
Following the meeting a Roast Beef Dinner will be served.
2	P.M. Demonstration by the famous strudel-maker, Vida Furlan of Geneva, Ohio and member of No. 50, who will also show you how to make the famous “Žinkrofe.” I am sure that the majority of the ladies and especially you young ladies wish you knew the art of making that dish. Come and attend our bazaar and learn how to make these delicacies!
Drill Teams and dancers will perform at 5 P.M. and 6 P.M. The beautiful Style Show will be held under the capable leadership of Frances Seitz and her staff. Members are very busy sewing and getting ready for this affair. Come and see all the beautiful outfits that are made and will be modeled by the members.
Every minute of the day there will be activity, so come and enjoy yourself at the Bazaar!
Door Prizes will be given away to the lucky ones after the style show.

Services were held at St. Michael’s church with a Requiem Mass and burial was in the Lakeside cemetery with 5 sons and one grandson as pallbearers.
Mrs. Lauriski joined Br. 66 in 1936. She was a very active and good worker for the Organization, attending meetings regularly until sickness forced her to remain away. She not only enrolled all her immediate family but many members into our local branch. She wras treasurer for a good many years.
Our members attended her Rosary prayers and funeral in a body.
The following members were honorary pallbearers: Cecile Adamic, Frances Plautz, Mary Louise Penny, Mary Ann Stariha, Sophia Stariha and myself.
Cecile Adamic read the ritual at the cemetery and did a magnificent job. To her, the honorary pallbearers and members, many thanks for attending the services.
Frances Dremel underwent surgery for the removal of a cataract at Colo. Springs Hospital and is getting along nicely.
Father Bonaventure Bandi, O.S.B. has been appointed pastor of St. Michael’s church. We all pray for his success and that he will enjoy his new duties.
As I get ready to close this article we have received news of John Arko’s death in Denver, Colo. John was born and raised in Canon City. He leaves a widow, two sons, 5 grandchildren,
2	brothers and 5 sisters to mourn his sudden death. Two of his sisters, Mrs. Geo. Elkage and Mrs. Ernest Weber live in Elmhurst, 111. To them all we extend our deepest sympathy.

It would be impossible to show our gratitude to the six supreme officers, the delegates, and members who attended. We hope that by combining business with a little pleasure we have become better acquainted and therefore become stronger and more determined to go forward in
the work of oar S.W.U. We wished that by having the convention in Oglesby, we could in some small way contribute to the benefit of the Organization. We feel we have and thoroughly enjoyed having everyone with us.

meeting in June was held at the home of Rose Carricato. She and Donna Chrlstolf were hostesses. We all enjoyed the evening very much. We decided to skip July and not have a meeting as everyone was so busy
For August we drove to Doryeville and had our meeting at our new sister member’s house, that of Mrs. Charles Krizmanich. It was a picnic with Josephine Krizmanich, Eva Lubin, Kathryn Sterk and Frances Guerri-eri. Again, we had a very pleasant evening. Because of the Labor Day holiday we had our September meeting on Aug. 30. We met in the basement of our church. Ann Malenšek and Kay Lacy were hostesses. Not many were present as several were ill.
Our branch had a traveling bake sale and the money from this project was given to our church. I want to thank Ann Mufich and Josephine Somrak for their work and a job well done.
We w'ish to send Anna Pachalc, State President of Colo, and pres, of Br. 3 of Pueblo, our best wishes and congratulations on their state convention which was held on Sept. 20. We hope you all had a good time and did much for the good of our Union.

I do appreciate the energy, the enthusiasm, and the skill of Ann Kompare who as delegate to the 13th National Convention reported to our members at our Sept. 2nd meeting with measured words. APPLES — KING OF FRUITS
Said a Simple Simon to the pieman “Let me taste your wares” — and it’s a hundred to one shot that the pieman had delicious, juicy apple pies to sell.
Can you think of any fruit — for eating out of hand, in salads, desserts, or hot dishes — more popular than the apple? The number of its uses is endless, and each is an appetizing way to good health. Medical tests show that apples in the daily diet give higher resistance to colds. They contribute a goodly share of vitamins and minerals to the diet. They’re low in calories!
Crunchy fall apples offer wonderful possibilities for making delicious, fresh-tasting desserts.
APPLE TORTE
Mrs. Ann Matzdorf of Branch No. 1 of Sheboygan, Wisconsin sent in this very excellent apple dessert. It has “gone over big” with her friends. (I’m sure it will “go over big” with you too).
2	cups flour
1 cup butter
2 tablespoons sugar
dash of salt.
Combine above ingredients and press on bottom of a 9 x 13 x 2 pan. Slice 12 large peeled baking apples and combine with % cup sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Spread over crust. Bake at 375° F. for 45 minutes.
Make a pudding of 2 regular or 1 family size package of vanilla pudding. Cook according to directions on box. When apples are baked, pour hot pudding over them.
Make a meringue of 5 or 6 egg whites and % cup sugar (2 tables-spoons per egg white). Add a little sugar at a time. Beat until very stiff. Cover lukewarm pudding with meringue. Return to oven. Bake at 350° F. for 12-15 minutes or until meringue is slightly brown. Must be quite cold

Our trip to Oglesby, III. to attend the State Convention was one of the highlights of altogether enjoyable day. It was fun being with Mildred Por-opat, Mary Perkovich, Mary Sambol and Ann Pave from our branch. Their cordiality and hospitality to me was very heart-warming.
One last item of interest, please try to attend our banquet, Oct. 14th and bring with you a friend. We want this banquet to be successful. Your presence will help assure this.

APPLE DELIGHT
Another delicious apple recipe was submitted by Mrs. Helen Swegel of Branch No. 25 of Cleveland, Ohio.
3	eggs
1 and % cups sugar Cream together
Blend in 1 cup Wesson oil.
Sift together:
2 cups flour
I teaspoon soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon cinnamon.
Add sifted dry ingredients to first mixture; then add 2 full cups of thinly sliced, peeled, cooking apples and 1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts. Bake in greased 9 x 13 x 2 pan lined with wax paper. Bake 35 to 40 minutes at 250° until done.
APPLE CRUMB DESSERT
Vz teaspoon salt
1 cup brown sugar
2 cups flour
% cup quick-cooking oats % cup butter Vž teaspoon soda.
Mix as for pie crust saving 1 cup for topping.
In a saucepan, stirring constantly till thickened, cook
% to 1 cup sugar depending on sweetness of apples
1 cup water
1 tablespoon corn starch When thickened add 1 teaspoon vanilla
Pat crumb mixture in 13 x 9 x 2 pan. Put in at least one inch layer of thinly sliced, peeled apples; pour cooked mixture over apples, and sprinkle the one cup of crumb topping over all. Bake 1 hr. at 350°. Makes about
12	servings.

No. 96, Universal, Pa. The meeting of our branch was held at the home of Anna Podobnik on Aug. 29. It was fairly well attended. Perhaps some of our members, those from the Renton area especially, had forgotten the date. in smrti. —■ Pred časom je imela resno operacijo žolčnih kamnov soses. Anna Novak iz Arroya Ave. Zdravje
se ji polagoma boljša. Bolnice so tudi: Anna Cernach in Anna Pechek (same Ančke) in Louise Galich ter mogoče še katera, toda omenjene sem obiskala v bolnišnici in so vse bile krasno obložene s cvetlicami, da je bila ena lepša od druge. Vse se tudi lepo zahvalijo vsem za cvetlice in darila ter obiske v času bolezni, saj je pravilen pregovor, da človek spozna v bolezni koliko dobrih prijateljev ima. — Vsem bolnim naj Bog vrne ljubo zdravje.
Ko pišem te vrstice, je smrt nepričakovano posegla v družino Joe in Frances Simonich (Frances je naša tajnica) ter jim vzela sina in njegovo ženo. Smrt je nastopila zaradi nesoglasja v sinovi družini. Zapuščata tudi G mesecev starega sinčka in številno sorodstvo. Za Raymond Jr. in Carol je bil zelo žalostni prizor pogreba.
Frances Mismash in Angela Perko žalujeta za umrlim bratom Andy Kante iz Canon City, ki se je poslovil za vedno po 3 letni bolezni. — Vsem preostalim izrekam iskreno sožalje, posebno F. S. Tvoja prerano umrla sta zaspala in zdaj ju ne vzdramijo več Tvoje solze, kakor pregovor pravi, zunaj jesensko sonce sije, a meni se že smrtni venec vije. Mi tukaj pa upajmo na večno združitev po smrti z njimi.
Jesie Koshak, Angela Meglen in soprogi so obiskali razne države, posebno Cal. jim je ugajala. Imeli so veselo svidenje s sorodniki. — Mary Stravje se je vrnila po počitnicah pri hčerki v Denverju. Enako tudi Tony in Jennie Lukanik, ki sta obiskala sina Billie-ja, ki je teacher v Denverju. Naša poznana Johana Mismash iz Denverja je nas obiskala ter se sestala z bivšimi prijateljicami. Hvala za obisk!

On je glavni odbornik te organizacije. — Ann Mismash je tudi obiskala svoje drage v Jolietu, posebno mamo in ata Horvatove. — Naš zvesti prijatelj John Butkovich bo imel svoj 15 letni koncert 1. nov. Proslavil bo 15 letnico svoje radio ure. Prav je, da se izkažemo hvaležne za njegovo sodelovanje in delo.

Za Skupni bazar bodo še posebne seje, ker je mnogo priprav, da se bo vse lepo izvršilo.
S počitnic se je vrnila ses. Mary Iskra z možem. Iz domovine pride za stalno Martin Merela, brat naše preds. Doma je iz Velike vasi pri Moravčah na Gor.
Darovalke v good time blagajno ta večer so godovalke — sestre: Rupert Kuhar, Krmel,, Marold, Udovič, Stuzen in Angela Beznovski. Bog naj vsem bogato poplača z ljubim zdravjem. — Ta večer je bila sprejeta nova članica Rozi Stuzen. Dobrodošla!

No. 105, Detroit, Mich. On July 2G, our members were invited to the beautiful home of Ann and Frank Prehoy of Bloomfield Hills. There were only seven of us; more were expected but didn’t show up for some unknown reason. All I can say is that they should be truly sorry that they did not come! I would not have missed it for any thing or anyone! It’s a home like those seen in magazines and the movies, but never expected, ever, to enter myself. Ann and Frank took us on a tour through the house and around. We saw spacious rooms, beautifully furnished.
Evergreens and flowers were throughout the grounds, with several tables and huge umbrellas. We took some pictures and then settled at one of the tables. It was a very hot, humid day, but we didn’t notice that, sipping chilled champagne! You could not help feeling at home with a charming hostess as is Ann. She supplied a gift-wrapped package and we put our donation in, every one hoping to be the lucky one! Alice Kocijan received the gift, a butter warmer! That is something I would never think of buying myself. You can use it for numerous other things. Cute gadget I must say. We were happy that Alice got it, she is always donating something at our meetings.
A delicious buffet lunch was served outside, where we just helped ourselves to our hearts’ content! Along
about 7:30 we finally decided it was time to leave. Time certainly passed very quickly! We all thank you, Ann and Frank for a lovely afternoon. May God bless you both, and may you continue, always, to be happy and healthy.
Alice Kocijan just returned from a three week vacation to Mexico, Texas, Ohio, and several other places. Brown as a bear, she is. She also told us some very amusing events that occur-ed on her vacation! Rose Jamnick also had just returned from a visit with her family in Connecticut. Pauline & John Adamic flew to California, in a jet, to attend her nephew’s wedding. They are staying for two weeks.

GOSPODOVA OPOROKA
Predno se je Jezus Kristus poslovil od sveta, je svojim apostolom izročil še svojo oporoko. Oporoka se glasi: "Pojdite po vsem svetu, učite vse narode, oznanujte evangelij vsem stvarem.” Apostoli so v sveti navdušenosti, da morejo nekaj storiti za svojega Gospoda, odšli na delo. Odpadel je strah, ki jim je hromil moči. Odprli so vrata, ki so jih do sedaj tako skrbno zaklepali iz strahu pred ljudmi in stopili pred množico oznanjujoč Kristusa. Preprosti, knjig nevajeni ljudje, so prvi dan pridobili cež tri tisoč ljudi za Kristusa.
Gorečnost za duše jih je gnala kar naprej. Našel si te preproste ribiče na vsakem vogalu, ki so z ognjem v očeh govorili ljudem o novi zapovedi, o dobroti božji, o Bogu človeku. Njihovo apostolsko delo je bilo tako silno, da so se zbrali voditelji pristašev drugih ver kakor tudi Judje, katere je Bog izbral za izvoljeni narod in iz katerega je izšel Kristus, a so ga zavrgli, začeli pripravljati na odpor. To pa se je zgodilo po božjem načrtu. Ko so začeli preganjati navdušene oznanjevalce evangelija, so ti odhajali drugam. S tem pa se je tudi začela oznanjati božja beseda tudi drugim narodom.
Naloga, ki jo je Gospod dal apostolom, velja tudi za nas. Seveda ne moremo vsi iti v misijone ali oznanjevati javno besedo Gospodovo. Vendar prekrižanih rok pa zopet ne moremo biti. Zanemarili bi veliko dolžnost. Zavrgli bi Gospodovo oporoko, če ne bi vsaj nekaj storili za širjenje božjega kraljestva. Kakor se moramo truditi za vsakdanji kruh, tako se moramo tudi za Boga. Misijonska nedelja nam živo kliče v spomin: ne pozabite na širjenje božjega kraljestva. Sveti oče kot namestnik Kristusov na zemlji, sam osebno pošilja poziv na vsakega katoličana, naj se spomni Kristusove oporoke in zapovedi.
Ljudje se danes zelo malo brigajo za to, kar je božjega. Mislijo, da lahko živijo brez Boga. Vendar Gospod pravi: “Človek ne živi samo od kruha . . . Iščite najprej božjega kraljestva in njegove pravice in vse drugo vam bo navrženo." Kavno pešanje vere je vzrok tolikih moralnih nes-
reč, ki jih vsak dan doživljamo. Ljudje so pri polnih loncih nesrečni in to zato, ker jim je duša lačna Boga.
Mož pravični živi iz vere, pravi sveto pismo. Če pa je vera živa, je polna dejanj, ki oznanjajo Boga. Dober zgled je en način razširjanja vere in evangelija Gospodovega. Koliko lahko dobrega storima v okolici v kateri živimo. Višina verskega udejstvovanja in lepega krščanskega življenja je merilo za srečo prebivalcev in narodov. Ko se bodo današnji ljudje vrnili k Bogu, bodo zopet našli svojo srečo. Z dobrim zgledom jim k temu pomagajmo.
Drugi način širjenja božjega kraljestva na zemlji, ki ga vsak kristjan lahko vrši, je podpiranje pionirjev, ki orjejo ledino med ljudni, ki ne poznajo Kristusa in njegovega odrešilnega dela. Podpremo jih lahko z molitvijo in denarnimi prispevki. Vsak po svoji moči.
Da bi to lažje storili, je sveti oče ustanovil Družbo za razširjenje vere. Njen član postane, kdor prispeva en dolar na leto kot članarino in izmoli vsak dan Oče naš, Ceš-čeno Marijo in Čast bodi z dostavkom sv. Frančišek Ksa-verij, prosi za nas. S tem izpolnimo Jezusovo oporoko in svojo krščansko dolžnost. Deležni smo pa tudi veliko duhovnih dobrot. Le malo truda je treba, da izpolnimo Gospodovo oporoko. Iz tega sledi, da lahko vsakdo postane apostol in misijonar.____________

13. redna konvencija se je vršila in končala v lepem redu ter mi bo ostala vedno v svežem spominu.
Na povabilo prvega gl. podpreds. SNPJ, Ed. Tomšiča, sem se udeležila proslave 60 letnice skupnih društev za Colo. v Walsenburgu. Vse se je vršilo v lepem redu ob veliki udeležbi in izborno postrežbo. Prisrčna zahvala za lepo priznanje naši SŽZ.
Zaradi Zvezinega dneva v Pueblo, Colo nimam posebnega poročila za to sejo, samo želim povdariti, da so naše kuharske knjige zelo popularne, posebno med Amerilcanci. S tem zaključujem moje poročilo. Vaša drž. preds. za Colo.

Najprej poročam veselo novico, da se je poročila čla. Kathleen Hudek z Robertom Mirguet. Njena mati je tudi naša dobra članica. Želimo jima mnogo sreče in zadovoljstva v zakonu.
Zopet smo izgubile dobro članico Alojzijo Srebrnak. Možu, otrokom in ostalnemu sorodstvu naše globoko sožalje, njej pa naj sveti nebeška luč.
Ses. Elizabet Papež so odrezali drugo nogo. Je velika reva in tudi njen mož je bolan. Vse ji želimo, naj jo ljubi Bog in Marija tolažita da bo lahko prenašala hudo trpljenje. — Težko operacijo je prestala tudi Helen Krob-li in Ana Blatnik. Ana Zbikovska je padla in si zlomila roko. — Naša tajnica Frances Novak si je tudi hudo poškodovala nogo pri automobilski nesreči.

Št. 20, Joliet, III. Naše čestitke organizaciji KSKJ, ki je praznovala 70 letnico obstoja. Naša častna preds., Marie Prisland, je bila povabljena, da kot prva ženska gl. odbornica in bivša podpredsednica pozdravo zborovanje. Imela je pomenljiv govor in s svojim nastopom je očarala vse navzoče. Ves program je bil dobro izpeljan od govornikov do naše šolske godbe, od naših do čikaških pevcev, vse se je vršilo v zadovoljstvo bližnjih in dalnjih obiskovalcev.
Čestitke veljajo tudi organizaciji Sv. Družine, ki je praznovala 17 konvencijo. Mrs. Prisland je pozdravila navzoče zborovalce. Naše oltarno društvo je praznovalo 75 letnico v parku.
Joan Muster, hčerka naše večletne odbornice in bivše gl. blag., se je poročila s častnikom amer. armade, Samuelu Hoobler. Želimo jima mnogo sreče!
Naše čestitke tudi Mr. in Mrs. M. Papesh ob njuni 40 letnici poroke. Anne je naša dolgoletna kegljačica, njen sin vodi pogrebni zavod. Njena hčerka je poročena z Mr. Farkaš.
Po enem mesecu počitnic sta se vrnile iz Cal. Jo Sumic in Helen Rožic. — Olga Ancel z družino je bila na počitnicah v Rhinelander, Wis., kamor gredo vsako leto.
Naše sožalje družinam Mrs. Jennie
Benedik ob izgubi brata Johna Dolenc, enako Josephine Muster ob izgubi brata Louis Menart v Clevelandu. Umrl je star komaj 50 let. Poleg sestre zapušča ženo, sina, dve hčerke in dva brata. Naj v miru počiva.
Bolnim sestram pošiljamo želje za hitro ozdravljenje: Mary Plankar in Anne Zewitt, ki se nahajata v bolnišnici sv. Jožefa. V Silver Cross je bila Theresa Shepich in hčerka Marylin Goss. Zdravja želimo tudi vsem, ki so bolane na domovih.
Po treh mesecih se bodo sedaj pričele seje. Želim, da bi pridno prihajale, ker je vedno kaj važnega za skleniti.

Št. 21, Cleveland, O. Po dveh mesecih smo se zopet vse zdrave in vesele udeležile naše seje. Razpravljale smo
o	skupni prireditvi podružnic in vse je šlo v redu naprej. Ticketsi so šli dobro. Vabljene vse!
Čestitke tudi vnuku ses: Kožuh ob priliki sklenitve zakona.
Bila je dolga, a lepa pot v deželo škofa Friderika Barage. Molili smo na njegovem grobu, kakor tudi si ogledali njegov muzej in tisti mali kuferček, ki ga je nosil na svojih misijonskih potovanjih.

Poročilo Predsednice
Pozdrav g.p. Okorn, uradnice, delegatinje in prijatelji. Moj prvi termin v uradu predsednice je potekal hitro in z veseljem priznam, da je bilo prijetno delovati skupno z odbornicami in članicami, kajti deležna sem bila najlepšega sodelovanja. Vsaki mesec sem poročala v Zarji o tekočih dolžnostih.
V	Clevelandu sem na čelu kegljaški ligi z 22 do 24 skupinami; letni bazarji skupnih podružnic so bili zelo uspešni. Udeležila sem se drž. konvencij v Minn. (19G1 in 19621), v Penna. (1961 in 19G3), Ohio (1961 in 1962) ter 111. (1961 in 1963).
Z drž. preds., Ello Starin sem pomagala ustanoviti novo podr. št. 101 v Bedford, O.
Udeležila sem se 35 letnic podružnic: št. 10, 14, 21 in 25 in obiskala sem podr. št. 6, 73 in 28 v Calumet, Mich.
Čestitke naši konvenčni kraljici Vicki Faletič, št. 25, ki je pridobila 42 novih clanič in skupno s prejšnjimi kampanjami 198 članic. Čestitke tudi ‘‘princezinjam” Rose Želodec, št. 50, Ann Podgoršek, št. 33, in Rose Kraemer, št. 43. Skupno smo v zadnjih treh letih dobile 1099 novih članic.
SŽZ je v zadnjih 3 letih vodila zgodovinska potovanja: 1961 v Hawaii pod vodstvom Frances Chiodo, dalje v Kanado z Liz Žefran na čelu ter 1962 s tremi busi in 117 potnicami smo obiskale Washington, D.C. pod vodstveni Corinne Leskovar in mene. L. 1963 smo tudi imele največjo skupino potnikov v Evropo. Na ta način smo pomagale članicam obiskati razne kraje, na drugi strani pa tudi s tem pridobimo nove članice.
Potruditi se moramo, da bomo nadaljevale svetle tradicije naše Zveze, da bo vsaka članica v resnici ponosna, da je članica organizacije. Tudi ne smemo pozabiti, da je naša Zveza bila prva, ki je nudila šolnino študentom, kar sedaj posnemajo tudi druge slov. in hrvatske organizacije.
Nadaljujmo v složnosti naše delo, da bomo dvignili našo priljubljeno Zvezo in ji pomagali do velikega napredka v bodočnosti.
S	tem zaključujem moje poročilo in želim, da bo kon-venčno zborovanje kar najbolj uspešno.

Poročilo Glavne Blagajničarke
Drage sestre, prejmite moje prisrčne pozdrave. Moje poročilo je v slovenščini v prid naših starejših delegatinj. Pozdravljam našega duhovnega svetovalca, gl. odbornice in delegatinje z dobrodošlico v Chicagu. Moje podrobno poročilo je bilo objavljeno v Zarji, v katerem tudi izjavljam, da se popolnoma strinjam s finančnim poročilom glavne tajnice. Vse knjige so pod nadzorstvom in vsi računi pregledani vsakih šest mesecev, v skladu s pravili, če boste pazljivo prečitale finančno poročilo gl. tajnice, boste dobile boljši vpogled o organizaciji in njem poslovanju. Vaši skladi so varno naloženi. Ne želim, da vam vzamem več dragocenega časa. Bodite zagotovoljene, da je vaša organizacija v zadnjem terminu, kakor tudi prej najboljše vodena.

Poročilo Prve Nadzornice
Pozdrav g.p. Klavdij, gl. odbornice, prijatelji in sestre. Moje poročilo bo kratko, ker je moje konvenčno poročilo bilo v Zarji aprila. Tudi vsakih 6 mesecev podam poročilo na polletni seji direktoric, ki je priobčeno v Zarji.
Zelo sem vesela, da moram poročati, da nadzornice vedno najdemo vse stvari v naljepšem redu. Moramo biti ponosne na odlične odbornice. Vedno je užitek se udeležiti sej gl. odbora.
Glavni sklepi 13 redne konvencije SŽZ:
ASESMENT: Zvišanje 50 mesečno v razredu A in B, stopi v veljavo 1. jan. 1965. Mladinski asesment ostane 100 mesečno. Članice, ki so dosegle 75 let starosti do 1. julija 1964, bodo plačale 200 mesečno. Tiste, ki so dosegle 80 let ali več pred 1. jul. ne plačajo asesmenta. Za 1. 1964 je še v veljali doprinos 250 za Zarjo. Tiste, ki dopolnijo 80 let po 1. juliju plačajo 200 mesečno.
ZARJA: Mesečno glasilo SŽZ se ne bo spremenilo v nobenem oziru — tudi v bodoče bo Zarja tiskana mesečno, 6krat letno na 16 straneh in 6krat na 32 straneh, kakor doslej.
MLADINSKI ČLANI: Vsaka podružnica bo prejela prispevek 250 za vsakega mladinskega člana (-ico) ako priredi primerno letno priredbo, bodisi vzgojno, kulturno, ali zabavno.
KUHARSKE KNJIGE: Sedanja zaloga Kuharskih knjig je skoro pošla, oz. bo v prihodnjih mesecih. Nova izdaja bo natiskana.
ZGODOVINA ZVEZE: Ustanoviteljica, Marie Prisland je sestavila zgodovino SŽZ in bo tiskana v knjižni obliki ter bo dosegljiva vsem podružnicam prih. leto.
NOVE ODBORNICE: Konvencija je ponovno izvolila vse odbornice z zaupnico za dosedanje delo ter je izvolila dve novi odbornici: Mary Bostian (št. 50) za Drž. Predsednico za Ohio ter Louise Epley (št. 73) za Mladinsko načelnico.
KONVENCIJA v letu 1967 se bo vršila v Washington, D.C.
Odkar sem v gl. odboru, sem srečala mnogo prijaznih ljudi. Trudila sem se vedno, da opravim svojo dolžnost. V času članskih kampanj sem vedno pridobila nove članice. Pohvaliti tudi moram našo dično podružnico št. 33 v Duluthu, Minn. Imamo res delavno in pridno članstvo, ki pomaga vedno pri naših prireditvah. Upam in molim, da bo naša konvencija kar najbolj uspešna. Hvala.

Poročilo Druge Nadzornice
Hvala načelnica, č.g. Pater, odbornice, delegatinje in gostje. Tudi moje poročilo je objavljeno v Zarji v aprilu na str. 82.
Od zadnje konvencije so potekla tri leta polne aktivnosti. Kot gl. odbornica sem bila podrobno informirana o delu podružnic. S čitanjem Zarje je razvidno delovanje in uspehi.
V	tem času sem sklenila mnogo novih prijateljstev. Tudi sem se udeležila številnih priredb in tako predstavljala Zvezo.
Podr. št. 25 ima odlične odbornice, Pauline Stampfel, Mary Otoničar, Josephine Golinski in Dorothy Strniša, vse so zelo pridne in izpeljejo česarkoli se poprimejo, toda tudi vse članstvo je izborno, ker pomaga kjerkoli je potrebno. Najboljši znak napredka so nove članice in tudi udeležba na sejah je lepa, da postaja dvorana premala.
Zahvala gl. odbornicam, ki so napravile zadnja tri leta odkar sem v glavnem odboru res srečna in nepozabljiva. Z zahvalo, vam želim vse najboljše.

Prijateljici v spomin.
Dne 22. julija letos je v Sloveniji, v bolnišnici na Jesenicah, preminula ameriškim Slovencem poznana in priljubljena koncertna in operna pevka gospa Pavla Lovšetova. Leta 1929 je po naših slovenskih naselbinah prirejala koncerte, ki jih je z velikim veseljem in navdušenjem posečalo stotine slovenskih rojakov, katerim je ona prinesla pevski pozdrav iz ljubljene domovine.
V	Sheboyganu je imela dva koncerta; v cerkveni dvorani in v avditoriju mestne višje šole, kjer je 1,200 oseb navdušeno sledilo njenim pevskim točkam.
Z gospo Lovšetovo sva si dopisovali. Osebno sem jo zadnjikrat videla leta 1959 na obisku v Ljubljani. Pravila mi je o prestanih grozotah zadnje vojne, o svoji internaciji v nemškem lagerju, kamor je bila takoj ob pričetku vojne odpeljana, ker je od Nemcev preganjanim družinam pomagala in jih ščitila; tožila je o izgubi dobrega soproga in edinega sina. Tisto leto je poučevala skupino upokojenih pevcev, s katerimi je priredila več koncertov. Želela je, da sva se slikali. V slovo je zaigrala in ganljivo zapela njej ljubo pesmico: — “Kje prijazne ste višave, ki obdajate moj dom . .
Gospa Pavla Lovšetova in Marie Prisland,
v Ljubljani leta 1959
Njena hčerka, profesorica Majda Lovšetova, nastavljena na gimnaziji v Portorožu, mi je na mojo željo dostavila življenjepis svoje pokojne mamice, ki ga tu navajam:
"Operna in koncertna pevka Pavla Lovšetova se je rodila 13. januarja 1891 v Ljubljani, okraj Šiška. Njen oče Jakob Bole je bil železniški uradnik, mati Ana pa je bila gostilničarka in posestnica v Šiški.
Pavla se je šolala v Ljubljani; ko je končala višjo dekliško šolo, je vstopila v službo kot bančna uradnica in istočasno nadaljevala glasbeni študij pri mojstru Hubadu v Ljubljani. Po končanih študijah se je poročila z profesorjem Antonom Lovšetom in se za 7 let preselila z njim v Novo mesto, kjer je rodila hčerko Majdo in sina Sama. Kot pevka je bila često pozvana v Ljubljano. Ob ustanovitvi prve Jugoslavije leta 1918 je s pianistko Koblerjevo po koncertni turneji po Jugoslaviji pela tudi na dvoru kralja Aleksandra in bila odlikovana z redom Sv. Save za umetniške zasluge. Isto leto se je z družino preselila v
Ljubljano in prevzela mesto operne pevke-primadone v Slovenskem narodnem gledališču. Svoj operni repertoar je izpopolnjevala v Milanu v Italiji pri slavnemu maestru Vauzu (njegov učenec je bil tudi znameniti dirigent Toscanini). Obenem je sodelovala na neštetih koncertih v tujezemstvu in inozemstvu ter bila leta 1929 na koncertni turneji po Ameriki. Poleg pevskih nastopov je delovala tudi kot pedagog na ljubljanskem konservatorju In glasbeni šoli “Sloga.”
V času druge svetovne vojne je bila internirana v nemškem taborišču Muehldorf, odkoder se je vrnila z zelo zrahljanim zdravjem. Ko je zvedela, da je v tej vojni padel njen edini sin Samo, ni bila več razpoložena za pravo delo, temveč je samo še privatno poučevala petje. Drugi udarec je bil leta 1955 smrt njenega soproga Antona, ki jo je ponovno težko prizadel.
Leta 1963 je pričela od bolezni srca hirati, pa je tedaj odslovila vse svoje solopevske učence. Februarja letos je dobila prvi težki srčni napad v Portorožu, kjer se je pri svoji hčerki Majdi na morju hotela izlečiti od prestane gripe. Po vrnitvi v Ljubljano je meseca maja dobila ponovni srčni napad, v sredini julija pa zbolela za pljučnico. Kljub vsem naporom zdravnikom njen oslabljeni organizem ni mogel izdržati in je 22. julija izdihnila v rokah svoje hčerke. Iz Jesenic je bila prepeljana v Ljubljano, kjer je bila po svoji izrecni želji tiho pokopana v krogu svojih najbližjih ...”
Poleg hčerke Majde zapušča gospa Lovšetova dva vnuka: Krašimirja Dugan in Jano Lovše. Rodbini, ostalim sorodnikom in prijateljem pokojne izrekamo globoko sožalje. Priljubljeni pevki, zaslužni narodnjakinji, plemeniti ženi in prijateljici bo ohranjen blag spomin!

Misli o naši peči na drva.
Moji otroci, še manj vnuki, se le malo spominjajo naše peči na drva, a kadar pričnejo briti jesenski in zimski viharji pa meni vedno uidejo misli in spomini na naš gorki štedilnik “Universal” firme.
Peč je zavzemala celo stran kuhinje v mojem novem domu, ko sem se vanj vselila kot mlada nevesta. Potrebovala je mnogo prostora, ker je imela priklopljen grelec za vodo.
Kadar sem v peči hotela imeti dober ogenj, sem potegnila za palčico, ki je zapirala dimnik. Ogenj v peči je za-prasketal, se razvnel in prijetna gorkota je napolnila vso kuhinjo. Današnja modema peč ne zmore kaj takega.
Leta 1915 so bile peči na drva model lepote. Vsak teden je moja peč dobila lepo, novo polirano lice. V ta namen sem rabila posebne vrste polir imenovan “ČRNI JOŽE.” Nikelnaste dele peči sem umila z vodo in milom, posušila in zdrgnila, da so se svetili kot luč.
Tiste čase smo vedno' imeli doma pečen kruh, potico, paje, piškote in ob praznikih tudi torto. Ker nisem imela ne jaz niti peč toplomera za vročino meriti, sem v peč vtaknila roko ter tako ugotovila kdaj je bila dovolj vroča za peko.
V	peči smo kurili drva; pozimi tudi premog. Pepel, ki sem ga previdno stresla, je padel v pripravljeno posodo. Če sem bila nerodna in količkaj preveč potresla, sta se oba — pepel in žerjavica vsula v pepelnjak. Podkuriti je bilo treba znova.
Naša peč na drva je bila vsej družini v veliko udobnost. Moj sin se spominja, da je bil vsako soboto okopan v škafu vode, postavljenem pred vrata odprte gorke peči. Hčerki trdita, da se jima zdi, da še vedno vonjata aromo jabolk, ki sta jih na vročo peč razpostavili, da so se nekoliko popekle predno sta jih pojedli.
Otroci so bili gorke peči posebno pozimi veseli. Ogrela jim je premrle roke in noge, posušila mokre čevlje in rokavice. — Neko mrzlo pomlad smo v kuhinjo prinesli ravno izlegle piške. V primernem zaboju je koklja svojemu mlademu zarodu zadovoljno materinila poleg gorke peči, kjer se je grela tudi naša ljubka mačica.
Naše stare peči na drva ni več. Z njo vred je izginilo tudi naše tesno povezano družinsko življenje. Otroci so se poročili in se razkropili. Minuli so tisti lepi časi, ko smo se zbirali okrog gorke peči ter si ob njej greli roke in srce ...

Št. 24, LaSalle, III. Poletje je minilo in naše seje se pričnejo v oktobru. Vabim vas, da se udeležite v lepem številu. Imamo več važnih zadev za rešiti in vsaka si lahko vzame par ur od domačega dela. Vabim tudi tiste, ki nikoli ne pridete in vse, ki ste v zaostanku z asesmentom ker leto gre k zatonu.
Zlato poroko sta slavila naša nadzornica Mary in njen soprog John Uranič. Imela sta lepo slovesnost v krogu družine in prijateljev. Vse jima želimo še mnogo let zdravja v družini.
—	V bolnišnici so se nahajale čla. Mary Savnik in Josephine Majcel, ki so ji odrezali nogo zaradi sladkorne bolezni. Vsem bolnim želimo ljubega zdravja.
Zahvala Mary Lenich iz Eveleth, Minn. za lepe pozdrave, katere mi je poslala po sestri Frances Ahčin, ki je bila tam na počitnicah. Hvala Mrs. Lenich in vsem članicam po celi Minnesoti. Naj vas Bog blagoslovi!

Št. 38, Chisholm, Minn. Čeprav nekoliko pozno, vendar se moram zahva-
li	vsem, ki so se udeležile južine na materinski dan. Lepa hvala tudi gostom, ki so pokazali, da se tudi zanimajo za Zvezo.
Na jun. seji je naša delegatinja ses. Kren poročala o konvenciji. Izrekla se je pohvalno. Podrobnosti boste čitale v Zarji. Opozarjam sestre, da si vsako Zarjo dobro prečitajo, ker je v nji toliko zanimivih člankov in dopisov od vseh krajev. Zahvala velja Corinne, ki tako lepo urejuje naš list, da ima vedno mnogo podučljivega in lepega berila in slike. Tako vedno rečem, da je Zarja vredna tiste cente. Moj pokojni Frank je zmeraj vso Zarjo prebral, pa je še mene špiknil “kaj nisi vidla v Zarji, kam pa gledaš!”
Od zadnjega dopisa smo izgubili dve članice, Paulina Zajc in Mary Jerome. Mary je bila naša ustanovna članica, jako dobra v vseh ozirih. Dočakala je visoko starost 86 let. Doma je bila iz Iške fare. Zapušča sina in hčerko. Bog bodi milostljiv njeni duši.
Paulina Zajc je bila doma iz Gorniške fare pri Sodražici. Dočakala je 72 let. Zapušča 3 sinove in 5 hčera. Bila je tudi dolgoletna članica podr. Članstvo podr. se je udeležilo molitve na večer pred pogrebom in spremile so jo na pokopališče. Obeh pok. sester se bomo spominjale in molile za pokoj njunim dušam. Žalujočim naše sožalje.
Več članic imamo bolnih, med njimi tudi Frances Lesnak, ki se nahaja v bolnišnici na Hibbingu. Njo je zadel
CLEVELAND, O. — Najprvo naj vam poročam veselo novico, da je Mary Ann, hčerka Mr. in Mrs. Michael Sršen z 6203 Carl Ave., bila preoblečena v redovnico reda Notre Dame in dobila je ime Sestra Mary Vida. Njena mati, bratje in sestre ter teta Paula Rihtar z Carl Ave. so včlanjeni pri naši podružnici. Pridružujemo se čestitkam sorodnikov in prijateljev ter šastitljivi sestri Vidi iskreno želimo obilo let plodonosnega dela v izbranem poklicu za vero in Boga.
Naš pregovor pravi, da slovenski kri ne fali, in naše žene pri podružnici št. 25 so temu priča. Kako? Le berite, koliko jih imamo, da obhajajo osem križev ali več! Torej, danes vam bom jih naštela le par:
Sestra Mary Zust z 6735 Edna Ave. je “mlada” — ima jih 84 let.
Preko ceste živi sestra Magdalena Zupančič, ki jih je naštala 83 let.
Sestra Marion Zabukovec živi na farmi v Madisonu, O., je tudi le odštela 80. leto.
Na 6620 St. Clair Ave. pa živi sestra Theresa Chernilogar, ki jih je zadnjič štela 79 let. Njena vnukinja je Loretta Slapnik (ki imajo cvetličarno na omenjenem naslovu), kakor tudi pravnukije (otroci vnukinje Lorette) so vse pri naši petindvajseti.
Le par let mlajša je sestra Theresa Zdovec z E. 60 Et., ki je obhajala svoj 77. rojstni dan.
Poleg teh imamo še druge vrle članice, ki še niso toliko časa na svetu, so pa naše dobre matere in ponosne na svoj slovenski rod. Med temi so sledeče v zadnjem času obhajala svoje rojstne dneve:
Anna Zalnik z 1058 E. 72 St.; Frances Okorn z E. 68 St., ki je s svojim možem, Jožetom, hčerko, zetom in njih otroci, bila na avtomobilski turi po Minnesoti in drugje, kjer so obiskali kraje, kamor so prišli ob prihodu iz starega kraja pred več kot 40 leti; sestra Frances Nemanich, žena Josepha Nemanicha, glavnega predsednika KSKJ; in da ne pozabimo dolgoletne prijateljice Josephine Ambrošič z Carl Ave.
Vsem tem, kakor tudi drugim, katerih nismo omenili (ker nam niso znani datumi njih rojstnih dni), izrekamo naše prisrčne čestitke, želeč jim obilo ljubega zdravja in veselja še na mnoga leta. Naj Bog vas živi!
Torej, zdaj pa malo resnega. V vsakdanjem življenju se pojavijo razmere, preko katerih nimamo kontrole. Tako
mrtvoud pri delu In reva je ležala 25 ur na mokrem cementu. Našla jo je soseda. Zdravljenje bo otežkočeno, ker je zdravnik prišel tako pozno. — Dalje časa je bila v bolnici tudi Margaret Palcich, sedaj ji gre na bolje. — Na operacijo na očeh je šla Anastazija Mihelič. Frances Bizal se tudi nahaja v bolnici na Hibbingu. Vsem želim
se tudi večajo stroški preživljanja. Vse se je podražilo in ne moremo pomagati, da bi se zadržalo dvigajočih cen. Vsled teh splošnih razmer, smo tudi me članice pri Slovenski ženski zvezi prizadete. Tudi naše poslovanje stane danes več, kot je kdaj prej. Vse potrebščine so se podražile, kakor tudi poštnina, itd. To je res tudi pri drugih podpornih organizacijah, kjer imajo še višje asesmente, kakor pa imamo pri naši SŽZ. Radi tega ni bilo mogoče drugače storiti, kot da se je na konvenciji zaključilo, da s 1. januarjem 1965 prične vsaka članica plačati po pet centov na mesec več. To velja le za odrasle članice — v mladinskem oddelku ostane asesment, kot je bil.
V	izdaji Zarje meseca julija je naša ustanoviteljica, sestra Marie Prisland, podrobno pojasnila glede tega poviška asesmenta za pet centov. Doslej je morala vsaka članica plačati po 25 centov na leto za Zarjo, po novem letu tega ne bo treba. Članice, katere pošiljate asesment po pošti, ne pozabite, da po novem letu pošljete po pet centov na mesec več, če plačate za pol leta, pošljite $3.00 — za celo leto pa $6.00. To velja za one članice, ki ste plačevale po $2.70 za pol leta ali $5.40 za celo leto.
Članice, katere ste zavarovane v skladu "B” in ste sedaj plačevale po $4.20 na pol leta, pošljite po 1. januarju 1965 za pol leta $4.50 in za celo leto $9.00.
Ponovno prosim vas vse, da si zapomnite to in pošljite pravo vsoto asesmenta, ker stroški so s pošiljanjem opominom in tudi poštnina je draga, kar prizadene našo malo blagajno pri podružnici. Iz naše blagajne plačamo v prvi vrsti za maše v spomin umrlih članic, za cvetlice in avtomobil pri pogrebu. V letošnjem letu smo imele že 13 smrtnih slučajev (do 1. septembra), kar je že precej globoko poseglo v našo blagajno, kakor lahko same preračunate.
Zato, drage članice, prosim vas, ne godrnjajte za teh pet centov več, ki jih boste plačale po novem letu. Vse rada čitate Zarjo in vse ste dobre članice, zato ste pristopile. Ponosne ste na svoj slovenski rod in poznate težave, ki ste morale preko njih v svojem življenju, zato sem si svesta, da razumete položaj in da boste sodelovale. FINANCIAL REPORT FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE, 1964 FINANČNO POROČILO ZA MESEC JUNIJ, 1964
OBISK ROJSTNE DOMOVINE
Št. 54, Warren, Ohio. Prišla je hladna jesen in konec počitnic. Tudi midva s sporogom ter Hedie Gradishar in Helen Kogovšek iz Girarda, smo se podali obiskati naš rojstni dom. Miss Gradishar pa je šla obiskati dom njenih staršev in sorodnike. Jaz imam tam samo še brata z družino, katerega nismo videli 27 let, ko se je 1939 vrnil k svoji družini in vsemu hudemu, ki je sledilo.
Ko smo z avijonom prišli na Bmike, je tam čakala velika množica ljudi. Po nas so prišli njen bratranec, Stane Kozina in njegova sestra Angela Vesel iz Eveleth, Minn., ki je prišla malo prej. Ona nas je predstavila moji nečakinji Dragici Ogrinc, toda brata žal ni bilo, ker se je pri delu na hiši poškodoval in tako je bila naša prva pot v Ljubljano v bolnico. Brat je bil nekoliko boljši in bilo je dosti joka od samega veselja. Nato smo se odpeljali k nečaku, ki z družino živi v Ljubljani, kjer je bil naš drugi dom, ko smo odhajali in prihajali na izlete.
Stane nas je odpeljal v Sušje pri Ribnici, kjer je na bratovem domu zopet bilo veselo svidenje. Črez par dni smo se odpeljali na možev dom v Sa-dinjo vas, nakar smo posetili Sostro, Bizavik, Češence in okoliške vasi. Ima še enega živega brata, 2 sestri in 2 svakinji, žene pokojnih bratov. Na Hudniku ima sestro in v bližini živi njegov stric v visoki starosti 92 let. Tudi tam so nas bili zelo veseli in sina iz drugega zakona, ki je član godbe “Veseli hribovci.” Bili smo tudi pri Urhu, kjer je nekak muzej s slikami padlih partizanov. Od tam je lep razgled po okolici Device Marije v Polju. Nato smo si ogledali tudi papirnico v Vevčah, kjer je Frank delal. Obiskali smo bratov in materin grob pri Sv. Lenartu. Na Rudniku pri Frankovi sestri nas je čakala izvrstna večerja. Z nami je bil tudi njen mož Rudolf. — Naslednji dan smo si ogledali Ljubljano in bivši salezijanski dom na Rakovniku, kjer so pa sedaj stanovanja, toda cerkev je res lepa, enako tudi Lurška votlina.
Na naših potovanjih po lepi Sloveniji smo obiskali Marijo Pomagaj, Bled z gradom in Begunje, ki ima žalostno zgodovino, kjer so Nemci streljali talce. Udeležili smo se tudi piknika v Beli Krajini. Slovenska gostoljubnost se je pokazala, ko so nas pozdravili s šopki za ženske in žganjem za moške.

Št. 84, New York, N.Y. Zopet imam za. poročati vesele in žalostne novice. Najprej moram pohvaliti naše glavne odbornice, kakor Uidi članice št. 2, ki so priredile tako krasne konvelicne programe. Chicago se res lahko postavijo, ker ima tako odlične pevce in slov. plesalce. Vse tlelegalinje, kakor tudi drugi prisotni na banketih so bili zares prevzeti od krasnih predstav, katerih ne bomo nikoli pozabili.
Zahvaliti se želim Kr. Jeromu, ki mi je razkazal Chicago, kar nisem prej videla na autobusni turi. Peljal me je na duhovne vaje v Leiuont, kjer je res krasno. Vem, če bi hoteli imeti turiste na počitnicah, bi jih lahko imeli dosti, ravno tako, če bi zgradili dom za ostarele ljudi. Ne vem, zakaj naše katoliške jednote ne dajo ali investirajo za doni, kakor SNP.I, ki imajo (Iva doma. enega v Fontani, drugega v Clevelandu. Prineslo bi jim lepe obresti, zraven bi pa napravili dobro delo stoterim starim ljudem, ki so v resnici člani organizacije in so vsa leta plačevali, da je danes organizacija zra-stla. in je v ponos Slovencev v Ameriki.
Obiskala sem tudi dom moje sošolke Frances Vidmar in ona me je peljala obiskati sestro Angelo Zajc in Kristino, ki je sedaj v bolnišnici. Kristina se me spomnila in me dobro spoznala. S težkim srcem sva se ločile. Frances, iskrena hvala za postrežbo. Hvala tudi vsem drugim prijateljem, ki so me vsi tako lepo sprejeli, posebno Fr. Jeromu, župniku fare Sv. Jurija v So. Chicagu.
Naša podr. je imela 1 ■“>. aug. lep izlet z busom v Greenwood Lake. Hi 1 o nas je dva busa veselili članic od naše podr. in št. !Hi. Iiil je krasen dan in ker je bil Veliki Šmaren smo se udeležili' sv. maše na jezeru. Vsem lepa hvala za lepo druščino, posebno Mrs. Kukovec za darilo “mačka v za-klju” in krote za drugi dobitek. Dobila jih	je Mrs.	Vesel, ki	je tako	prijazna
in	ji vse	razdelila.	Hvala	njima in
vsem udeležencem, upam, tla se drugo lelo zopet vidimo.
Dne 1^. aug. pa nam je umrla dobra čla. Jennie Martinčič, ki je bila 4 leta v postelji in hčerka Mrs. Dolar in njen mož sta ji neumorno stregla. Podr. ji ji	izkazala	poslednjo	čast in	darovano
je	bilo za	sv. mašo.	Bila je	stara 74
let. Na.i počiva v miru.
Sedaj se nahajam v Sharon Springs, kjer imajo zdravstvene kopele (Sulphur Baths). Ljudje se hodijo sem zdraviti že Kilt let, posebno za artritis in druge bolezni. Imajo mnogo lepih hotelov.
Članice prosim, da pridete na sejo podr., ker moramo plačevati, če nas je polno, ali prazno. Prav je tudi, da pi ideiiio skupaj in se pogovorimo.
Pozdravljam vse gl. odbornice, urednico, ter vse delcgatinje zadnje konvencije, kakor tudi č.g. duhovnega vodjo in vse članice naše dične SŽZ ter vse čitatelje naše Zarje.

On October 2, the Church celebrates the feast of the Guardian Angel. Father Lovasik, SVD, in his book The Angels writes:
“God has given you an angel to be your faithful companion and to help you while you are on earth. This angel is God’s messenger to tell you what God wants you to do.
“This angel is God’s servant to keep your soul from sin and to protect your body from harm.

The discovery of America by Christopher Columbus in 1492 is celebrated each year on October 12. In attempting to find a short route to the Indies. Columbus and his ships "bumped” into the New World. Columbus possessed great moral and physical courage and a deep belief in God. Because of his success, other discoveries were encouraged and new windows to science and knowledge were opened.
Halloween is celebrated October 31. Its name means hallowed or holy evening because it comes the day before All Saints Day. The custom of having parties stems from ancient times.
Costumes are an important part of Halloweening. In our home, for a
time, bonghten costumes were fine; but for originality, unusual home creations or home- sewn costumes are preferred.
There’s always an exciting air in preparing for Tricks or Treats evenings, as well as for partying. The stores provide many appropriate decorations and treats. A carved—out pumpkin with a lighted catldle inside is the most important feature. Ah, yes, there must be games, too. One
o1	the most popular is Apple Ducking wherein shiny red apples without stems float in a tub of water, while the children will try to get an apple with their teeth.

A very amusing game is “Eye Guessing”. Hang a sheet straight down to the floor—sufficiently high to conceal all of the child. Cut a slit just large enough to reveal the eyes. Divide the children into teams. Have all of one team behind the sheet, blit only one pair of eyes showing at a time. The other team must guess identity by eyes. Team guessing largest number wins.
