Kjerkoli živi, si naš človek pod danimi pogoji skuša ohraniti vez,'katera ga veže z življenjem svojih prednikov; veže ga vez tistega velikega zaklada slovenskega narodnega izročila; tistih starodavnih šeg, običajev in navad, katere so spremljale našega človeka iz roda v rod. V zakladnici ljudskih pesmi imajo božične pesmi poleg ljubezenskih največji delež. To priča, kako se je ljudstvo oklenilo božičnega praznika; praznika rojstva, sreče in miru. Oznanilo ljubezni, dobrote in ponižnosti vsem ljudstvom sveta. Okoliščine njegovega rojstva so čustveno povezale slehernega človeka. Imenovali so ga "poprtnik", “božičnik”, “ župnek”. Ponekod pečejo še danes tri hlebe 'božičnjaKa, kateri so na mizi za vse tri svete večere Božiča: na božični večer, Novo leto in Sv. Tri kralje. Vsi, mladi in stari doživljajo ob njih. Oči vseh so uprte v betlehemski hlevček. Čakala me je žena ... “Že zopet je tam,” sem rekel.. “Kdo?” Vsi ljudje, vse stvari so izginile ... Slišal sem samo njegov glas ..., a njega nisem videl. Malo pred besedami: “Santa Maria, Maria ora pro nobis.. ” vpade napovedovalec z nizkim, počasnim glasom:) Tiho in mirno mrak nad vasjo se sklanja, “Ave Marija” noči sveti pričetek naznanja ... (3 sekunde pavza, melodija in zvonjenje tihotno.) Manica, čas je! Zvonovi nas vabijo k molitvi in kropljenju. Res je. Tonček, prinesi blagoslovljeno vodo in jo daj očetu. Domu našemu v letu prihodnjem spet ogenj odganjaj. Polju in delu našemu rodovitnosti in blagoslova polno daj. (“Ave Maria” izginja v tihotnem zvonjenju, ki pojenjuje in utihne, še v zvonjenje pa vpade napovedovalcev glas:) Širom lepe slovenske zem-^ Ije, nocoj, spet zvonovi sveto-nočni pojo. Veličastje svete noči se vtaplja v dušo našega p r e p r o s tega človeka. Ta, naš človek čuti vso skrivnostno moč tega svetega večera. Sprejema jo vase, tiho, mirno! Da, morda še z večjo svetostjo! Kajti bolečina, trpljenje, kakršnokoli že, nam daje zmerom nova spoznanja. In zvonovi, ki nocoj preko zemlje slovenske done, dali bodo domovje mislim neštetim. V hramih božjih naši ljudje našli bedo svojo uteho. Tam našli bodo odgovor vsem vprašanjem, katera jim postavlja ta božična noč s svojo skrivnostjo, in življenje, ki ga mora živeti naš preprosti, delavni človek. Nade pričakovanj preteklih dni so se spremenile v kruto resnico težkega spoznanja. Iz tega spoznanja so se rodila razočaranja. To vse zdaj postavlja nova vprašanja . .. Družine se bodo nocoj zbrale pod streho svoje domačije. Zbrale se bodo morda kot nekdaj? Saj Božič je praznik družine; posebno še praznik — slovenske družine! Pa vemo, letos bo drugače, mnogo drugače. Številne ma- • tere, očetje, bratje in sestre bodo ta večer potočili solze in v boli vzdihovali: Kje ste, dragi naši, ki ste tako ljubili ta naš slovenski dom Božiča?! Vemo, krije vas rodna zemlja, okrvavljena. Vemo, vaši utripi srca in duše so med mrzlimi, stisnjenimi zidovi brezštevilnih ječ . . . (Nastane šum in hrup ljudi.) Vemo, daleč ste razkropljeni po svetu, prav po vseh delih sveta. A mi vsi, prav vsi, mi in vi, živi in mrtvi, kjerkoli ste, romamo skupno nocoj - v naše bele cerkvice, raztresene po gričkih in dolinah. Kajti On nam kralj je, On nam je vladar! Resnično, Bog, Ti vladar si naš, ker moč v Tvojem kraljestvu sta mir in ljubezen! Ti naš edini si učitelj! Učiš nas ljubezni samo in sprave v bratstvu pravem. V Tvojih besedah ni sovraštva. Hvaljen bodi! Kraljestvo Tvoje nocoj z novo močjo v naše duše prihaja in v njih ostaja. (Pesem pojenjuje in zvonovi iz daljave vse bliže in močneje, ko spet napovedovalec vpade:) Vsem, našim slov enskim poslušalcem želi “Glas Amerike” srečne in blagoslovljene božične praznike. Tu David opeva v preroškem duhu, kaj govori nebeški Oče ob rojstvu svojega Sina: “Moj Sin si ti, danes sem te rodil. Prihiteli so revni pastirji, najbednejši stan tedanje dobe in tistega kraja, toda bogati v veri.. “In vstopili so v hišo in ugledali dete, z Marijo, njegovo materjo, in padli so predenj ter ga molili; in odprli so svoje zaklade in mu darovali zlata, kadila in mire.” Mat. 2, 11. Pred njim so mogočni kralji in vladarji tega sveta, vse njih krone in ves njih sijaj in vsa njih moč le prazen prah, nič. Božično Dete v bornih jaslicah je kralj vseh kraljev, oblastnik vseh oblastnikov, vladar vseh narodov, gospodar vsakega posameznika in vsega človeštva in vsega j stvarstva. . . in sprejemajo nase njegovo vlado! Ps. 2. Vladarji, prvaki in voditelji f Daljo na S «trar>D Season's Greetings from the Members of ST. WEEKLY x FRIDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 21, 1979 YOUR VIEWS OUR NEWS ¥ . v> May the light of peace, happiness, friendliness and contentment of the season of Christ’s birth shine upon each of our readers now and throughout the year. — Jim and Madeline Debevec /* CHRISTMAS PAST tsy JOE GORNICK It was the Christmas season at our home many years ago. A week before Christmas we set up a five-foot pine tree in the center of our living room. The tree cost about forty cents. The tree was decorated with various colored glass balls, holy picture cards, red and white hard candy canes, shinny trinkets, tinsel spread around the tree. We took turns lighting the 46 small wax candles. Mother was busy all that week, preparing nut bread (poticas) and doughnuts (krofe) and home baked bread. The baking took place in a square wood coal burning stove in the kitchen, giving a delightful aroma throughout the house. On the night before Christmas, after supper, Mother sprinkled holy water in each room, praying along the way. Circling the tree, we all knelt on our knees, praying together, the three decades of the rosary. Following, we sang Christmas songs in Slovenian. Pencil and paper in hand, We wrote to dear Santa, what we would like to have for Christmas, such as a bicycle, sfed, roller skates and wagon. ff was nine P.M., we blew °ut ai] the candles, and went to bed. The following Christmas morning, we all received, on a large soup plate, the following present consisting of oranges, pencils, tablets, mixed nuts, and clothing. The bad one received an old stick. Happy we were, and exchanged greetings. Bundled up, in a joyful mood, we attended mass in the old frame church, on Norwood Road. In front of the church, we wished everyone heartiest greetings, and good health for the coming year. The tree was taken down on the Feast of the Epiphany, or Three Kings. This is how we celebrated Christmas at our house, many years ago. I too wish you all a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year. NIELSEN, Phd. THE REBELIOUS PERIOD This period of innocence was destined to end. In my case, the real discovery of America occurred in, high, school, a public school, as my parents could not afford a private Catholic high school, favored by the more affluent Slovenian families. . In high ^school I discovered the publie,, library. I could borrow up to four .books and keep them two weeks. I went through the period, of reading Horatio Alger, trashy Craig Kennedy detective stories, and books about the pioneers by Altshuller. In due course I outgrew this mediocre reading level and got to read Ben Hecht; Henry James, Walt Whitman and Joseph Cob rad. Soon I was reading Shakespeare -and the English poets. A new world opened up for me. I began to question my innocence. Being Slovenian, I reasoned for my self, was no great shakes. I had difficulty researching about Slovenians in the library. I questioned my religion, and finally, my provincialism on being a Middje Westerner — a Clevelander. I began to envy people with names like Bill Wilson and Jack Cole. I compared my mother unfavorably with the mothers of Irish and “English” . fellow students, mothers who spoke English as well as the teachers, indeed, to my puzzlement, even better sometimes. I began to be ashamed of the homemade shirts and sweaters I wore to high school. I got jobs after school and bought more fashionable' clothes. In spite of this inferiority, L nevertheless developed a cockiness in * my classes, particularly in math and the sciences. To my surprise I was' frequently the best in the class. I sensed that I could never work in a factory as my father did. Perhaps I could open up a small business, a dry cleaning shop or a bar. And indeed I did some . of these things. Thus I could remain Slovenian and a Clevelander, and maybe, still be somebody. , ^ I lived a dual life, privately One half of my life I lived in the libraries and worked at my math ’and chemistry —-even to having a chemical laboratory at home. This half was completely alien to my, family and friends. No one understood me if I quoted ' Shakespeare, or talked about moment of inertia and the mechanics of rotating bodies. Nor did anyone at the school lectures or in the library invoke Slpvenianism as pertinent to the discussion. Not only was I not understood, but a certain hostility generated between my parents and myself. Book reading at home Was goofing off—-a device for shirking one’s house and yard chores. It is only now that I realize' how important the reading of good books is for the. deelop-ment on one’s mind. I now read German, French, and Slovenian novels. My reading level in these languages is ou a high school level. I am working Lip to reading philosophical’essays in these lan-/ guages, but T can’t do it yet. Memo... It will take some time. But when I was eighteen or twenty, I read William James, I. A. Richards, and Mortimer Adler, indicating that I must have been a prodigious reader to have reached this level of reading sophistication. On more than one occasion a book was torn from my grasp, and I was told to get out to clean the yard or weed the garden. When I hinted that I wanted to be a chemist, there was skeptism. What was wrong in getting a good job in a factory, or if one wanted a white collar job, there were business schools to learn bookkeeping. Or better yet, how about opening up a gas station, or a small establishment in the neighborhood selilag wallpaper and paints. The skeptism, I now realize, was rooted in the belief that one should not aspire to something above one’s class. (To be fair to my parents, they wanted the best for me, it is that they did not want me to be hurt in trying to cross into a world where I did not belong — where the risks of failure were high.) My parents were very sensitive to neighbors opinions and they discussed such matters openly with them and got all kinds of free advice. How could one get a job as a chemist? Somewhere there was in the neighborhood one who had gone to college, and what was he doing — maybe running an elevator downtown. This was not uncommon in the depression. The chance of reaching too high and failing . was real — at least to them. A choice had to be made. I felt I could not support, with the time distribution I had available, my dual life. I examined my situation. I con-vincedj.my self tba,t for the goud qf'.,;t;ny, (pi-ure Slpvenianism, my parents, Catholicism, and even Cleveland did nothing for me. What made all the difference in my life,. i concluded, was education.-I decided to become an/academic, dedicating myself to the world of libraries and scholars. This was at the age. of twenty-five. An incident precipitated the inner conflicts I was having. I had gotten a degree in Chemistry after a number of years of part time and one full time college — generally with a full time job on the side to finance myself. In fact, I graduated with honors in Chemistry. I joined the Mc-Gean Chemical Company on Harvard Avenue in Cleveland as a foundry engineer. I thrived, in this place, or so I thought. . In two yeras I was noticed by the management suffi ciently to be considered (so it was rumored) as the next assistant plant manager. 'However, I lost to a man named Raymond Clark. An old timer of the company took me out to lunch to commiserate with me, and to explain why I lost out. One reason was that the Workers at the company were mostly Polish, Czechs, Itali- ; ans, Germans, etc., while in ' management they were ail : Wasps with names like Ott, ’ V/aite, and McGean, etc. Se- ; condly, the elite of the com- 1 pany in this chemical firm -j generally advanced degrees, -at least to a masters degree i level, while I had only a baccalaureate. Strangely, I accepted the verdict that I could not cross the line- to the Anglo-Saxon world. I knew my place. But I definetly felt miffed that I was hot accepted because of insufficient academic credentials. I had a certain conceit about my chemistry knowl- (Coutinuefl on page 4) WISHES FOR A BLESSED, JOYFUL CHRISTMAS and A PROSPEROUS AND HEALTHY NEW YEAR ALL YEAR LONG JIM, MADELINE and JIMMY DEBEVEC MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY NEW YEAR mrs. AN ETHNIC EXPERIENCE (Continued from page 2) edge and I considered myself the equal of any masters or PhD. holder in the company. I quit in a huff and decided to get a masters degree at least. I changed my name and came East to Connecticut. I got a job in Connecticut, at the Seymour Mfg. Co., as a foundry engineer, and I took up residence in New Haven. At Seymour I was clearly in command of the foundry, having learned quite a few tricks at McGean. I began to look into the sophisticated sides of metal casting and would spend Saturdays at the metallurgical library at Yale. I consulted with Professor Mathewson there on a metallurgical problem, and I was to learn that not only was he known as an authority on brass in the Connecticut valley, but he was also a world renowned figure in metallurgy. This impressed me greatly and I wanted to work for Professor Matheswson. Somehow I got the Seymour Mfg. Co. to subsidize me for a year at Yale, while I worked one day a week in their foundry. A New England company was capable of doing this -— it took a bit of vision, something I sensed could not be done by a middle western company, at least not in those depression years. I quickly acclimated myself at Yale, and by the second year, when my Seymour Mfg. Co. stipend stopped, I was on a full time graduate scholarship. In 1942 I got my coveted masters degree in Engineering. However, by this time my. sights were raised, and I started on my doctorate program. However, World War II came on and I left Yale to work as a research metallurgist at the International Nickel Co. in New York, (actually Bayonne, N.J., just across the river from Manhattan, where I chose to live.). A strange state of mind developed at this point. I felt strongly about the evils of Hitlerism, and I was ashamed that I might be hiding from the Draft behind the skirts of a sesearch job, where the company arranged for draft exemption. I therefore quit my job to let myself be drafted. By this time I was thirty years old. The Draft Board was a bit slow in processing my induction, but finally it came, and I was due for my physical in two weeks. Out of the blue came a decree, issued by General Hersey, head of Selective Service, that all males over 26 years of age were draft exempt, I went back to work, this time with the Philips Company in New York, as an associate physicist. .Here I met somd of the highest level scientists of this country and Europh (Uhlen-beck, Casimir, Goudschmidt, etc.). When the war ended I immediately returned to Yale to finish my doctorate, with a new wife, and clutching a lucrative National Science Foundation Fellowship, together with a one-year stipend from Philips. (Professors infiltrating industrial establishments on the management level and they understood graduate students). In a year or so my research was completed, my thesis handed in, and I was offered an associate professorship at New York University. Here I started and built up the metallurgy department and was chairman of this department for twenty-three years, after which I became simply a pro- fessor, going over to Polytechnic Insftute of New York, when the n ger of the two engineering schools was brought about in 1973. By 1976 I became professor emeritus of this institution and at this institution I then founded the International Precious Metals Institute, of which I am at present the executive director. I also became adjunct professor of dental materials science of the Dental School of New York University. These last three ranks being my current professional activities. While I was still at the Engineering School of NYU, due to some odd circumstances, I became the first engineer to break the ice, after Camp David, by visiting the Soviet Union on an exchange basis with a professor Kurdjumov, an internationally known Soviet metallurgist. (At Camp David an agreement had been made between Eisenhower and Khruschev to lessen tension between the two countries). The following year I returned to the Soviet Union as head of an eleven-man delegation for a 30-day tour of metallurgical establishments. Also, while at the Engineering School of NYU, I was reasonably prolific in technical papers and articles. I did consulting work on dental alloys and got several patents, one of which turned out significant, so that out of it I made a little money to add to our living comforts. This extra money also permitted me to make some investments, which turned out sufficiently well to .enable me to buy one of the finest houses in Manhattan, on Sniffen Court, where eventually I became president of the Sniffen Court Association. With an ivy league Ph. D., a professorship at a large university, having thirty-five research people under me, living in urban New York, and owning a house in a private court, with neighbors in the fine arts profession, was a heady atmosphere. Cole Porter had lived in this court whpn he wrote his “Begin the Beguine”, Malvina Hoffman, the world renowned sculptress, and a student of Rodin, lived next door, visiting us as a good neighbor occasionally. Such were my new neighbors. The ambience for creative work could not be better, and to be sure, I did become productive. How could I miss? And the appropriate recognition followed in due course. I felt I had successfully expunged from within myself Slovenianism and my immigrant parents upbringing. Except for the yearly visit to my home in Cleveland, I heard no Slovenian words for 30 to 35 years. I never met a Slovenian in my professional work. I felt, I suppose, that I had successfully passed into a higher class. -------o------ '0 0 0 OQOOOOOOPQQQOQftPQOpOOQftftpftftOOOOOOOOOOOOO 0 0 Q 0 O 0 0 p ft o O o o o Tel: 531-7933 - 34 Contact Lenses Computerized System 2000 J. To Otmar Tasner and all participant, heartiest congratulations! By LUD LESKOVAR Chicago, HI. — Otmar Tasner, a member over 30 years of St. Ann’s Society No. 170 in Chicago has been selected the Slovenian Man of the Year by the Slovenian American Radio Club. Citing his dedicated work for the S.A.R.C. in all 29 years of the Radio Hour, Tasner was honored at the gala Slovenian Day Festival on Oct. 27, 1979 at Chicago’s St. Stephen’s Hall. The Slovenian Award presentation is an annual part of this anniversary observance and in the past, notables in many walks of life have been recognized - for their achievements and contributions. The Slovenian Day program on the stage of St. Stephen’s featured the musical groups, ‘Slovenska Pesem” Chorus directed by Rev. Ven-delin Spendov, OEM, the France Prešeren Chorus directed by Prof. Frank Kubi-na, soloists and duets. We heard for the first time a ladies’ quartette of Mmes. Martinčič, Puc, Vidmar and Arko, who are all members of the St. Stephen’s Church Choir. The S.A.R.C. folk dancers again presented a lively program of various dances in colorful regional folk costumes. . / Four former “Gospodične” of Slovenian Day were on stage at the opening curtain, dressed in the costumes of Primorje (Trieste), Koroško, Prekmurje and Bela Krajina with the 1979 Gospodična, Julie Kacin in a beautiful Gorenjska narodna nosa. She read in the Slovenian language the Mayoral Proclamation aftd in English the Gubernatorial issue of Slovenian Day in our city and state. The, two historical events, the 29th anniversary of the Slovenian Radio Program of Chicago and 61st anniversary of the Slovenian Independence were referred to i'n remarks by noted KSKJers, Joseph M. Bernik, distinguished Vice-President of Abbot Laboratories and Frederick A. Orehek, Jr., Attorney-at-law. 50 costumed folk dancers of the senior and junior groups entertained the audience with a grand finale that had as its theme the traditions of bur Slovenian mountain cowherds, “Gorenjski Planšarji’. The boys in wooden shoes i and girls in , their peasant dresses, danced and twirled to the striking music of the cow bells and horns. Special parts were depicted by John Vidmar and Dale Trihko. A lyrical prose reading telling of the life of the planšar was given by Joseph Rus, written by Rev. Fortunat Zorman, OFM. Adding to the program, ac cented by the appearance of many children and young people, was j;he group of Mladi Harmonikarji of Cleveland, Ohio directed by Rudy Knez. The 26 young musicians, ages 10 thru 20, filled the hall with their grousing polkas and songs. The audience seemed to respond more and more spiritedly as the young peo- ple’s acts progressed, and at the finale which brought all these youngsters, Chicago and Cleveland together on the stage, the applause was deafening. In the last few years, as the S.A.R.C. folk dancers have gained more and more popularity and they themselves, more and more interest in their heritage, we have seen our Slovenian Day Festivals successfully bringing together and keeping together the majority of our Slovenian young people in Chicago. As the evening progressed this year, the youthful spirit seemed to stay with us and lasted well into the night. Music by Janez Arko and his orchestra added to the enjoyment. Everyone said, at the time of departing, “see you at the New Year’s Eve Party, Slovensko Silvestrovanje!”, which will be as a continuation of the party less than two months from now. That event will be held at Our Lady of Vilna Church Hall, 2323 W. 23rd Place and will be our farewell to the year 1979, done in grand style with a dinner and dancing to the Arko Orchestra. Another event we are looking forward to in the new year will be the 30th Anniversary of the Slovenian program. On March 17th, we will cosponsor a Caribbean Cruise for one week together with Cleveland and Pittsburgh polka lovers and two orchestras. We are now taking reservations for the cruise, and more information is available at our.office. Kollander Travel is in charge and assures everyone a marvelous time, Next fall, we shall have as our guests from Trieste-Opči-ne, Slovenia, the ensemble called “Galebi” for a program on Oct. 4th. The Crib and the Tree, the lights and the music add a special glow to the season. All these beautiful external things remain outside of us, unless their understanding and appreciation proceed from a deep sense of contentment reaching to the depths of the soul. This true spirit of Christmas can only come about if one realizes the real message of the Feast — God become man the birth of Jesus —God with us. Do try to make your Christmas Christian.
