V programu imajo izboljšanje odškodninskega zakona, boljše varnostne naprave v rudnikih in tovarnah, omejitev ali zabra-njenje indžunkcij v delavskih sporih, odpravo industrijske policije, odpomoč brezposelnim, starostno penzijo in razne druge izboljšave. Kje so druge slovenske naselbine? Ako ustanovite Stavbinsko in posojilno društvo, bo v vašo lastno korist, v korist cele naselbine. Slovensko Stavbinsko in posojilno društvo (North Shore Building and Loan Association) v Waukegan-North Chicago, je bilo ustanovljeno 2. maja, 1921. Nove serije delnic izdaja četrtletno, in sicer meseca maja, avgusta, novembra in februarja. As yet we have not taken any action in this respect, but we promise to do all we can in organizing a team for the year 1931. Here’s wishing everyone a happy and successful New Year. Jacob F. Stearle, Sec’y. . Talk about hard luck our Betsy Ross Lodge, No. 186, SSCU, has thrown upon them that should be distributed among other teams of the league. When a team loses by a scant margin of ten or twenty pins one naturally feels sympathetic toward them. That has been happening to “the makers of our first flag” right along, and it seems that the boys sort of got used to it. But last Sunday was just one heart-breaker too much, when in the second game they lost by a margin of ONE point. We think that the boys deserve a better break. At that they are good sports and one never hears that combination talking about the hard luck. Our hand goes out to this bunch of sports. Just glance at the scores below, so whenever you feel like letting out a “squawk” just think of the Betsy Ross quintet. In November this lodge successfully carried through a “Harvest Party,” for which huge preparations were made. -o—■---------- Lightning Electrical storms are generated by sudden and decided changes in the temperature of the atmosphere. The upper layers of the atmosphere are always cold and sudden changes are much less frequent in the winter when the temperature near the earth is also usually low. The time will soon be here when we will be making resolutions for the New Year. We all consider the maintenance of sound physical and mental health, our duty and privilege, therefore, we should make an attempt to keep healthy and as close to normal during the next year as possible. A _ normal individual must have normal weight for his height, type and age. He should have erect posture, firm muscles, good feet, normal vision, corrected with properly fitted glasses, if required, normal hearing, sound, well cared for teeth and healthy gums. In addition he should have a general sense of well being and enjoyment of life, adequate and accurate information on diet and general hygiene. If we are normal we should resolve to remain so and if not, we should resolve to make an effort to become so. To remain normal, or to become normal, if we are not, we must consider certain things. Our daily diet should be well balanced, adequate, but not excessive and should include leafy vegetables, fruits and milk. Coffee and tea should be used moderately, while water should be used quite freely, six to eight glasses daily, mostly between meals. Movements of should be daily, use of drugs. A be taken at least but daily if possible. Our work should be' done' intelligently without undue fatigue. Outdoor exercise if only a short walk, should also be a daily occurence. Recreation, preferably in some form of sport is an important factor. We should be able to relax with ease and to get sufficient rest. Our sleep should be sound and of at least seven hours duration for adults. Children, of course, should have 12 hours sleep, at least. It is also very important that our teeth be taken care ot properly. They should be examined twice yearly, by a competent dentist. Once a year we should have a complete physical examination by a reputable physician. Our eyes should be examined once every three or five years, especially if over the age of 35, by a graduate of medicine, who specialize in eye work. Should any defects be found corrections should be made promptly. Whether a resolution is made or not, if we decide to try our best to follow the above considerations, our next year will be more profitable from a health standpoint. F. J. Arch, Supreme Medical Exam. SSCU. ------------------o------- the bowels without the bath should once weekly, THREE GAMES MUST BE PLAYED It is very important that lodge basketball teams schedule three games with each team for intra-state contests-before one is properly eliminated. Only in this way can the true state champion be decided, as provided in the minutes of the Athletic Conference held in Cleveland, O., on Sept. 12 and 13. An exception is made when a lodge forfeits its right for competition. When the delegates met for the first conference of its kind-in the history of our Union, it was thought best to have two teams engage in one contest, the loser being automatically eliminated. But after a survey was made of the location of lodges in different states, it was found that they were situated in. groups within close proximity. Hence, the three-game series was insisted upon. When a team wins two games from its opponent luck does not play as prominent a part as might be the case should just one game be played. In football, where college teams can afford to play but one game vtfith each opponent, upsets will arise, because the weaker team will get all the so-called breaks over its stronger opponent. This is the reason that the three-game series was decided upon at the conference so as to give all the lodges an equal chance. Competition is quite keen in the State of Minnesota, and this rule will be of real value to all lodges concerned. The same will bo true with Illinois, Pennsylvania and Ohio. The month of January 1931 should see a number of SSCU inter-lodge basketball contests. By February 1st the four state champions of Minnesota, Illinois, Ohio and Pennsylvania must be determined, for during this month the sectional and national champions will be decided. Early preparations cannot be too strongly stressed, so that last minute changes in. schedules will not, be necessary. All lodges are again reminded to submit the names of contesting players to the Athletic Commissioner, and to provide for contests within their own state. Rockdale Appears in Limelight Hold Dance Jan. 10 at Petru-sa’s Hall Joliet, 111.—A number of active members from our St. Michael’s Lodge, No. 92, SSCU, met recently to discuss what has been done in the way of sports and activities, and what steps should be taken in the future. Our first move was the organization of a bowling team that has been rolling match games occasionally, for it was too late to enter any sanctioned league. The next move toward the advancement of activities in our branch was to co-operate ! with the neighboring lodge, the popular SS. Peter and Paul, No. 66, SSCU, by attending their huge Harvest Party held in Slovenia Hall. Nov. 19. at Joliet. We must admit that everybody had a glorious time. The affair was an epochal event, for we never thought it possible for any one group to i sponsor. Attendance was a record crowd that will go down in history in local circles. After experiencing this event we will be able to enrich our I own dance to be held Jan. 10 at Rockdale with enough features to assure everyone a gala time. In preparing for the coming event we are doing our utmost to sell and distribute tickets. All SSCU members and friends of Rockdale and vicinity are cordially invited to attend. Sunday, Dec. 21, Mary Seti-na, daughter of our lodge’s president, and myself dropped in Joliet to attend the annual meeting of the SS. Peter and Pauj Society, and invited the members to our dance. I must say that the reception and accommodations given us were wonderful. I just can’t find words good enough to express our appreciation other than “Thank you No. 66 a thousand times.” ***> Perhaps the readers of this page may have wondered why Rockdale has suddenly become active. It gives us great pleasure to announce that the entire matter was given a start by Bro. John L. Jevitz Jr. of No. 66 and member of the SSCU National Athletic Board. We certainly hope that he keeps up the good work, and wish to take this opportunity to thank him for his trouble. Our St. Michael’s Society, No. 92, SSCU, in Rockdale, is a wonderful little branch, taking care of the ill and disabled for many years. We will demonstrate our ability to entertain at the coming big dance Jan, 10 at Petrusa’s Hall, on Main Ave. Music will be furnishec by the popular Zlogar brothers, who are members of SS. Peter and Paul Society of Joliet. Now let everybody pull for a big night in Rockdale— ( Jan. 10. Anthony Penko. o- ---------- Beating Brains Curious thing about man and his brains. He can make a machine that can do something better than he can do it himself. A robot—a mechanical man—can fly an airplane more smoothly than it is possible with a human pilot. Two gyroscopes, one placed vertically and the other horizontally, form the “brain” of the robot. Men have long played with the idea of having mechanical men do the rough w'ork oi the world. Further investigation and invention may convince us that robots may excel men in doing the most expert work. For some it has been a ^ i bad year. For others it has j been a very satisfactory year. ( For thousands of our members i it has been a worth-while period—a period which has helped , to open their eyes to fast mov-j !ing tempo of modern business. : They have seen plenty of evid- j ience that the lodge on the job has the best chance in a readjustment period such as 1930 , has been. They have had it j impressed upon them, perhaps as never before, the necessity of intelligent direction of their every effort toward an econom- I ic standard which will make ] them less affected by shifts in the fraternal organization. i In years to come it is en- 1 tirely possible that the mem- ' bers will look back at 1930 and label it the “Year of the Great ! Awakening.” They will come i to look back with relief to the time when they got back to the ; foundation of principles once : more, realizing that, after all, there are certain basic fundamentals on which our fraternal organization is built and violation of those fundamentals can j mean only one thing. There are many lessons to be learned from the past months, if the memory of man is long enough to remember and apply them. Past history would throw a rather, negative cloud over the hope. Will the present generation prove different? It is sincerely hoped so. Many members have expressed themselves through articles in the New Era during the past year to the effect that they have placed their lodges in the preferred strata during the readjustment period, and they can be reassured, too, that when opportunities come in the near future, as they are sure to come, the lodge on the job will be in position to receive first honors. The squads will roll on alleys Nos. 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 j and 16. Between twenty-four* and thirty keglers are expected to participate in the tourney,! the first of its kind in the history of the Comrades Lodge. A picture of the couple winning first place will appear in the New Era Supplement in the latter part of January. The couples will be paired as follows: Mary Yarc-Paul Bartel, Frances Yarc-Walter Tu-bek, Frances Petrovic-Andy Skoff, Mary Petrovic-Frank Repp, Josephine Grum-Frank Zupec, Pauline Grum-Joseph Zorc, Mrs. J. Petrovič-Joe Petrovič, Rose Cuk-Albert Korenin, Mary Rode-Larry Petrovič. Mrs. M. Zupec-Martin Zupec, Mrs. S. Grum-Stanley Grum, Stephie Novak-Frank Petrovič, Christine Kobal-John Petrovič. Pick out the winner—who is the “dark horse”? The Comrades’ “crack” challenge bowling team again defeated the Comrade Boosters to the tune of 2890 to 2578. Capt. Albert “Biff” Korenin led , the attack for the winners with . a splendid 606 series, with games of 251, 155 and 200. Frank “Frosty” Petrovič topped the losers with 598. Oh. well, the Boosters are good losers, but wait, revenge is sweet. Some day the “crack” team will pay dearly for this—and how! In the Mother of God School League, the Comrade Girls bowling team dropped two games to the St. Ann’s No. 2 team. Frances Petrovič topped the Comrades with 439; she also led both squads in single game honors with 169. Although this is the first year the Comrade girls bowled in a league, they are now in second place in the school league. Basketball, oh, yes, basketball. The famous Comrades championship team it; no longer, ’tis sad, ’tis sad. Owing to industrial depression, Capt. Joe Little and Homer Savage, last year’s stars, left this city for places unknown to seek employment. Due to the fact that majority of the boys are out of work and unable to meet their lodge dues, some of the members withdrew, while a few have gone via the suspension route. Although Manager Frank Zupec and his cage quintet held several practice sessions, no games have been played as yet; however, indications are that the Comrade cage team will pry the lid in the near future. Here’s hoping—let’s go! EXTRA! Frank “Heavy” Repp, captain of the Comrade Boosters bowling team, recently “signed up” two youthful bowling stars. These two boys, are the youngest members of the Comrades Lodge and promise to be a real help to the bowling team. Oh, yes, we take great pleasure in introducing Mr. Stanley Grum Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Gruni, both members of the Comrades Lodge, and Walter Petrovič, also member of the SSCU. Whether or not the two stars will participate in the SSCL national bowling tournament has as yet not been determined, the parents of the two stars will not permit them to do so, owing to the fact that the boys are lather young and bowling in a national tournament is quite strenuous and exciting. Oh, yes, their ages. Well, Mr. Stanley Grum Jr. is exactly four months ol‘ age and Walter Petrovič is just two mouths old. K URADA GL. Teh rogačev so nedavno importirali v Avstralijo več tisoč in si od njih obetajo dobre uspehe. o---------------- Ali so žv vsi vaši otroci vpisani v mladinski oddelek J. S.
