Bojne ladje ZDA streljajo na položaje Druse — Kongresniki močno sprti o Libanonu
BEJRUT, Libanon; WASHINGTON, D.C. - V zadnjih treh dneh so bojne ladje zDA ponovno streljale na položaje Druse ntuslimanov. Ti položaji so pa v krajih, ki neposredno kontrolirajo Sirijci, čeprav nihče od predstavnikov Reaganove vlade ne trch> da so Sirijci neposredno angažirani v hojih. Trenutno imajo Druse borci obkoljeno krščansko gorsko vas Suk el-Gharb. Brez nnieriškega obstreljevanja Druse položajev, hi morda leti vas zavzeli ter izgnale čete redne libanonske vojske.
Druse topničarji od časa do časa obstre-Jujejo Bejrut in okolico, že dvakrat so poškodovali rezidenco ameriškega veleposlanika v Libanonu, vendar v zadnjih tednih ni Padel noben ameriški vojak. Včeraj je pa ilo ranjenih šest francoskih vojakov, ki tudi Pripadajo mednarodni mirovni enoti, ki je Prišla v Bejrut po odhodu PLO lani.
Pri ameriškem poveljstvu v Bejrutu izražajo zaskrbljenost radi vedno večje PLO udeležbe na strani Druse. Kot kaže, infiltri-rajo borci PLO proti Bejrutu. Tudi v Izraelu ruenijo, da skuša PLO igrati večjo vlogo v ibanonu. Kaj takega Izrael ne bo dovolil, Zatrjujejo pri novi vladi, ki ji načeljuje iižak Šamir, tudi če bodo morali Izraelci zopet vojaško zasesti kraje v osrednjem Libanonu.
• V zveznem kongresu pa raste odpor do Politike predsednika Reagana v Libanonu, Predvsem zaradi uporabe ameriških vojakov ''dejansko vojnem razmerju. Nasprotnikom oaganove politike je uspelo preteklo sredo, a Je odbor za izdatke predstavniškega doma 8 asovalo za predlog, ki bi ukinil denarno Podporo za ameriške vojake, nastanjene v 'banonu. Brez denarja za ta namen, bi bil . ®a8an po zakonu prisiljen odpoklicati vo-jake domov. Glasovanje je bilo 20 za pred-8 m 16 proti, za predlog je bila demokrat-a večina, proti pa republikanska manjšina.

Opazovalci filipinskih političnih razmer soglašajo, da je obstoj režima predsednika Marcosa in njegove zelo sovražene žene Imelde resno ogrožen. Znano je, da je Marcos v slabem zdravstvenem stanju. Govoril je po televiziji in dejal, da demonstracije ga ne bodo nikoli prisilile k odstopu. Orisal je program gospodarskih reform, ki naj bi prispevale k izboljšanju gospodarstva na Filipinih in rasti življenjskega standarda slehernega Filipinca. Opazovalci izražajo bojazen, da je vse to premalo in prepozno.
Sovjetski politik priznal, da je ZSSR storila napako, ko je sestrelila korejsko letalo
EDINBURGH, Škotska - V intervjuju z angleškim BBC je sovjetski politik Viktor Linnyk priznal, da so sovjetski piloti storili napako, ko niso ugotovili, da je bilo letalo, ki je kršilo sovjetski zračni prostor, dejansko civilno potniško letalo. Piloti so trdili kontrolorjem na zemlji, da gre za vojaško vohunsko letalo. Na podlagi te informacije, je pojasnil Linnyk, ki je baje svetovalec vodilnemu sovjetskemu politbiroju, so dobili piloti ukaz, naj letalo sestrelijo, kar so tudi storili, pri tem pa ubili 269 potnikov, med njimi 61 Amerikancev.
Če bi vedeli, da gre za potniško letalo, je dejal Linnyk, bi ga nikoli ne sestrelili. Pripomnil pa je, da je bil letalov polet kljub vsemu vohunskega značaja. Linnykove besede so prvič, da je kdo od sovjetskih predstavnikov priznal, da je šlo za »napako« na strani ZSSR.
Sovjetske, ameriške in japonske ladje še vedno iščejo ostanke sestreljenega letala. Sovjeti so sporočili Japoncem, da so našli nekaj predmetov iz letala in jih bodo izročili Japonski.
Kathryn McDonald, 34-letna vdova kongresnika Larryja McDonalda, ki je bil med žrtvami korejskega letala, je dejala na tiskovni konferenci, da bo kandidirala za njegovo mesto v zveznem kongresu. Dejala je, da jo je bil mož prosil, naj nadaljuje njegovo delo, ako se bi kaj zgodilo njemu. To njegovo željo bo izpolnila, je rekla ga. McDonald. Politični analitiki menijo, da bo ga. McDonald z lahkoto zmagala na volitvah, morda celo brez nasprotnika. Volitve bodo 18. oktobra.
Nova izraelska vlada bo imela pičlo večino v parlamentu — laburisti proti
JERUZALEM, Izr. - izraelski predsednik Chaim Herzog je poveril mandat za sestavo nove vlade dosedanjemu zunanjemu ministru Jitžaku Šamirju. V izjavi ob tej priliki je Herzog dejal, da je našel precej podpore v parlamentu za Šamirja, prav tako je v Izraelu splošna želja po vladi narodne enotnosti, v kateri bi sodelovale domala vse večje politične stranke. Tudi Šamir je dejal, da se zanima za takšno vlado, seveda pod njegovim vodstvom.
Vodilna opozicijska stranka je pa zavrnila Herzogovo in Šamirjevo prošnjo. Simon Peres, ki vodi laburistično stranko, je povedal, da laburisti ne morejo podpreti stališč Šamirjeve koalicije glede Libanona in izraelskega gospodarstva, prav tako ne do zasedenega zahodnega brega.
Peres je sicer želel, da bi mu poveril mandat za sestavo vlade predsednik Herzog, kljub temu, da bi Peres najbrž ne mogel najti dovolj parlamentarne podpore. Opazovalci izraelskih političnih razmer menijo, da brez volitev laburisti ne bodo prišli do parlamentarne večine.

Umrl je Anthony Maletic, mož Anne, roj. Zamaria, oče Johna A. in Mrs. Ivan (Shirley A.) Grgincic, 4-krat stari oče, brat Martina, Therese Katern, Petra (Nemčija), Anne Delisi-munovic, Dragice Prah ter že pok. Johna, Marie in Milana. Pogreb bo iz Grdinovega pogrebnega zavoda na Lake Shore Blvd. jutri, v soboto, v cerkev sv. Kristine dopoldne ob 9.15, od tam na pokopališče Vernih duš. Na mrtvaškem odru bo danes popoldne od 2. do 4. in zvečer od 7. do 9.
Charles Žele st.
Dne 19. septembra je na svojem domu na 20970 N. Vine St. v Euclidu po dolgi bolezni umrl 84 let stari Charles Žele st., rojen v Avstriji, od koder je prišel v ZDA 1. 1923, vdovec po 1. 1978 umrli ženi Mary, roj. Vesel, oče Charlesa L, Dorothy in Elsie (Mrs. Anthony) Ljubi, 7-krat stari oče, 4-krat prastari oče, zaposlen pri Apex Electric Co. 32 let, potem 6 let pri mestu Euclidu.

Bogdan Radiča in Louis Adamič

Prva dva dela tega članka sta bila objavljena 26. avgusta in 2. septembra. V tem, zaključnem delu piše Bogdan Radiča o zadnjih letih Adamičevega življenja, od začetka spora med Titom in Stalinom 1948. leta do Adamičeve smrti 3. septembra 1951.
O Louisu Adamiču bo tekla razprava na zborovanju American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies, ki bo v Kansas Cityju prihodnji mesec in na kateri bo sodelovalo več slovenskih raziskovalcev. O razpravi in zborovanju samem bomo seveda obširno poročali.
V prvih povojnih letih je bil Louis Adamič vnet zagovornik tako Sovjetske zveze kot Titove Jugoslavije. Tudi za Adamiča pa je bilo veliko presenečenje, ko je prišlo do spora Tito-Stalin. Najprvo je mislil Adamič, da gre le za nesporazum. Že jeseni 1948. leta je želel Adamič igrati posredovalno vlogo in je izrazil željo, da bi obiskal ZSSR, potem pa Jugoslavijo. Vendar Sovjeti so odklonili njegovo prošnjo za vizum. Kot kaže, se ni hotel opredeliti brezpogojno za Sovjeti-jo zoper Tita, Sovjeti — tako trdi B. Radiča — so ga pa smatrali za pristaša Tita. Tako ni Adamiču preostalo nič drugega, kot podati se na pot v Jugoslavijo.
Prispel je v SFRJ 14. januarja 1949. Na letališču Zemun pri Beogradu ga je pričakalo več uglednih oseb z Borisom Kidričem na čelu. Takega sprejema Adamič ni pričakoval, prav tako ne, da so ga v naslednjih mesecih sprejemali domala vsi vodilni partijci s Titom vred. Radiča je mnenja, da so Tito, Kardelj in drugi v partijskem vodstvu videli v Adamiča njihovega najvplivnejšega zagovornika na Zahodu in posebno seveda v ZDA. Adamič je bil za Tito torej res dobrodošel. Radi tega so se v SFRJ zelo trudili, da bi Adamiča v celoti dobili na svojo stran in so v tem tudi uspeli.
Po vrnitvi v ZDA je Adamič vneto zagovarjal Titov režim zoper Sovjete in zoper tisti del ameriškega javnega mnenja, ki je kritiziral početja Titovega režima. To Adamičevo stališče je najbolj popolno izraženo v njegovi zadnji knjigi, objavljeni po njegovi prisilni smrti, The Eagle and the Roots. B. Radiča poudarja, da v zadnjem obisku v SFRJ, Adamič dejansko ni videl veliko izven svojih sestankov in srečanj s Titom, Kardeljem in drugimi voditelji, da Jugoslavije ni prepotoval ter da ni imel veliko stikov z navadnimi državljani. Večji del obiska je prebil v Sloveniji in na domači vasi pri Grosupljem.
Zadnji dve leti svojega življenja je Adamič posvetil knjigi The Eagle and the Roots. Rokopis ni bil končan ob njegovi smrti in sta knjigo pripravila za objavo njegova žena Stella Sanders Adamič in Timothy Seldes. Ta knjiga je nekritičen in nestrokoven slavospev Titu in njegovemu režimu, v zgodnjih in srednjih 50-ih letih, ko so mnogi v ZDA in drugje na Zahodu videli v Tita nasprotnika Stalina in ZSSR, je imela določen uspeh in tudi vpliv.
Bogdan Radiča ima svoje mnenje o Adamičevi nenavadni smrti na svoji farmi v New Jerseyju. Omenja tri možnosti smrti: da si je Adamič vzel življenje, da so ga ubili protijugoslovanski oziroma proti-Titovski emigranti, ali da so ga ubili pristaši ali agenti ZSSR. Zelo odločno zavrača Radiča možnost samomora. Tisti Louis Adamič, ki sem ga jaz skozi leta poznal, pravi Radiča, ne bi mogel nikoli narediti
KONCERT FANTOV NA VASI
CLEVELAND, O. - Fantje na vasi! Nam, ki smo bili rojeni v stari domovini, obujajo te besede prijetne spomine na rojstno domovino in na mlada leta. Ko je pomladno sonce ogrelo zemljo, ko so trate, polja in gozdovi ozeleneli, so se tudi fantovska srca ogrela in ob toplih majskih in poletnih večerih dajala duška prekipevajoči mladosti s pesmijo na vasi. Njih pesmi so valovile ob rahlem vetriču preko vasi, polj in trat. Okna so se odpirala in stari in mladi so prisluhnili prijetnim fantovskim glasovom.
Doma, posebno na vasi, je pesem bila del življenja. Peli smo doma, peli v cerkvi, peli na polju, peli v goricah, peli poleti, ko smo se vračali s polja, peli pozimi, ko smo posedali ob peči, peli, ko smo bili veseli in peli, ko je žalost stiskala srce. Zato nam je naša pesem vedno draga in še dražja v tujini, ko nam obuja spomine na rojstni kraj in na našo
mladost.
Zbor »Fantje na vasi« je rodila ljubezen do slovenske pesmi. Pod spretnim vodstvom pevovodja Janeza Sršena, nas že nekaj let razveseljujejo s svojim ubranim in lepim petjem.
V soboto, 1. oktobra, bomo spet napolnili veliko dvorano Slovenskega doma na St. Clair-ju, kjer bodo Fantje na vasi podali svoj letni koncert. Prisluhnili bomo lepoti njihovega petja in jim obenem izkazali hvaležnost, ter dali priznanje za njihov trud. Letos se bodo pridružili Clevelandskim Fantom na vasi še gostje iz Kanade — Fantje na vasi iz Toronta pod vodstvom dirigenta Ignacija Križmana. Obeta se nam zares prijeten večer, poln lepega petja, tako, da bodo še naša srca pela in vriskala z njimi.

Kresova zahvala in vabilo
CLEVELAND, O. - Res je, da smo se letos v poletni vročini na številnih vajah precej prepotili s pripravo bogatega Kre-sovega programa. Toda krasen uspeh našega nastopa v Slovenskem narodnem domu v soboto dne 10. septembra je bil za vsakega izmed nas najlepša nagrada, kar si bi jih mogli želeti. Dvorana in balkon sta bila polna zvestega in navdušenega občinstva, ki je vsak ples nagradilo z velikim ploskanjem, pustne šege in norčije pa tudi s prešernim smehom. »Uživali smo in tudi marsikaj o slovenskih navadah smo se naučili,« je dejal pre-nek obiskovalec. Navdušenje je sijalo iz obrazov tako tistim, ki so še zrasli v prelepi Sloveniji in so ob nastopu obujali prijetne spomine na mladost v domovini, kot tudi našim v Ameriki rojenim sestram in bratom po krvi, ki še cenijo lepote in bogastvo slovenske dediščine.
In to navdušenje je vlilo tudi nam vsem pri Kresu, od naj-mlajših plesalcev do »veteranov« slovenske plesne kulture v Ameriki, novega veselja in poguma, da se tudi v bodoče ne bomo ustrašili žrtev. Ni vedno lahko po delu in šoli hoditi na vaje in tudi za naše naj-mlajše je to žrtev, da ne ome-
njamo ogromnega truda in na stotine ur časa, ki ga mora v vsak program vložiti učiteljica in koreografinja, to pot ga. Breda Lončar.
Tudi ga. Bernarda Ovsenik, ki se zaradi rojstva nadebudnega sinčka letos ni mogla toliko udejstvovati kot v preteklosti, je vsa vesela bila med nami in nas je nagradila celo z veliko in zelo okusno torto. Vsi ji čestitamo k najnovejšemu bodočemu Kresovemu plesalcu in upamo, da bo skupaj z go. Bredo Lončar in navdušenimi mladimi pomočniki in pomočnicami še mnogo let vodila in učila Kresovce.
Mnogo je doprinesel k uspehu tudi odlični orkester »Veseli Slovenci« pod vodstvom znanega glasbenika g. Dušana Maršiča. Generalko in tudi glavni program pa je posnel na video trak g. Ivan Hauptman, eden glavnih stebrov Korotana in Lilije. Tako smo se lahko vsi Kresovci prepričali, kaj je bilo res dobrega in posrečenega, istočasno pa tudi videli, kaj bi radi v bodočih nastopih še izboljšali, saj vsi želimo v plesni umetnosti še rasti in napredovati.
Dragemu občinstvu, orkestru in odrskim mojstrom, vsem časopisnim in radijskim poročevalcem, ge. Julki Zalar
samomora. Bil je ubit. Kdo ali katera skupina naj bi pa Adamiča ubila, o tem Radiča ne spregovori. Po izjavah o Adamičevi smrti, ki jih Radiča citira, je mogoče sklepati, da bi se Radiča opredelil za agente Cominforma oz. ZSSR. Tega mnenja so bili takrat tudi Jugoslovani. V zadnjem času, ko so previdnejši do ZSSR, te možnosti v jugoslovanskih občilih ne omenjajo več. Današnja njihova verzija izraža mnenje, da so Adamiča ubili pripadniki jugoslovanskih protikomunističnih begunskih skupin. Ta verzija seveda odgovarja trenutnim potrebam jugoslovanske politike. Če bodo na razpravi o Adamiču v Kansas Cityju oktobra meseca tudi raziskovalci iz SFRJ oz. Slovenije, bodo prisiljeni to z nobenimi zanesljivimi podatki podprto tezo zagovarjati.
Brez dvoma je še živih tudi več drugih oseb, ki so Adamiča poznali. Koristno bi bilo, če bi se pridružili B. Radiči in svoje spomine objavili, četudi bi ti spomini Adamiča podprli ali hvalili. Tudi v slavospevih je mogoče marsikaj odkriti oziroma drugače razumeti, kot misli sam pisec spominov.

in njenim pomočnicam v kuhinji, točajem in vsem, ki ste kakor koli pripomogli k tako lepemu uspehu Kresovega nastopa, naša prisrčna hvala. Prav lepa hvala tudi družinam g. Jožeta Rusa in g. Ivana Zakrajška za prijazno pogostitev vseh Kresovcev na njunih lepih domovih.
Zraven nastopa v Slovenskem narodnem domu na SL Clairju je več Kresovih skupin nastopilo in navdušilo gledalce tudi na Oktoberfestu v Paines-villu. Tam smo nastopili dne 5. septembra, prav na praznik dela — Labor Day — in med mešano ameriško publiko zbudili mnogo zanimanja in navdušenja za lepoto naših plesov in narodnih noš, slovenskim obiskovalcem pa je bilo še posebno toplo pri srcu, ko so lahko s ponosom pribili-»To so pa naši slovenski pie* salci!«
Vsaj kratko moramo zabeležiti tudi Kresov nastop v nedeljo, dne 18. septembra, v o-ogromnem »Canton Civic Center«, kjer je starejša skupi' na Kresovcev podala polurni nastop in navdušila približno štiri tisoč ameriških gledalcev-nastopila pa je tudi še v manjši dvorani v isti zgradbi in spet žela pravi val navdušenega ploskanja. Čeprav je na tem Mednarodnem festivalu ^ Cantonu nastopalo tudi ve poklicnih skupin, se je Kres tako odlično uveljavil, dagaJe vodstvo festivala naprosilo nastop tudi prihodnje leto.
Mladim ljudem kar ne zmanjka energije in so v te dneh tudi zaključili sv0-i0.I,/,0 novno zelo uspešno nabirk časopisnega in drugega papiU — to pot na dvorišču tovarn6 PAKO, ki jo je ustanovil in J° s pretežno slovenskimi usm benci zelo uspešno vodi znan in zavedni slovenski rojak %■ Pavle Košir. Prisrčna hvala g-Pavletu in vsem, ki ste Pr’sPe. vali kupe starih ameriŠ * časopisov in tako pripomog da smo mogli Kresovci spet n^ kaj dobrega storiti tudi Dom za ostarele.

»SVETO MARIJO«. »Zdravo Marijo« so MSIP objavili v članku 594 v maju.
Leta 1427 je sv. Bernardin Sienski, ki je umrl 20. maja *444, pridigal med drugim s besedami: »Sveta Marija, Mati božja, prosi za nas«. To pridigo so pozneje zaznamo-vali s številko 29. Torej so ta del molitve že takrat vsi dobro P°znali. Skupno z besedami »grešnike, zdaj in ob naši smrtni uri (Amen)«, jih najde-mo od leta 1514 v brevirju feda mercedarcev, od leta 1515 v brevirju kamaldolskih kartu-zjjanov, in od leta 1525 jih ja-j00 rec*tirajo tudi frančiškani. avn° odobrena molitev je njolitev Cerkve, enega dela J-erkve za vso Cerkev. Nič ndnega, da je tudi ta drugi del sv- Pij V. leta 1568 odobril za svoj prenovljeni rimski brevir *a obenem s prvim delom družil v (do leta 1955) obve-0X0 rabljeno AVE MARIA ali Po naše ZDRAVAMARIJO.
Lahko torej rečemo, da je ru8i del Zdravamarije izobli-ovala Cerkev po navdihu Vetega Duha, kakor se pri em Sv. Ga. Mary Kebe iz Thornhill, Ontario, je poslala za svojega vzdrževanca v Afriki $40 za sv. maše za rajnega moža Johna in $60 v dar. Oboje v kanadski valuti.
Iz Batawe, Ontario, sta poslala za vzdrževanje domačega bogoslovca kanadski tisočak ($1000) Albin in Mary Gospo-darič. Poslala sta za 4 leta in omenila, da bosta za peto dodala kasneje, če bosta zmogla.
V Subotici je bil posvečen v duhovnika in pel novo mašo
14.	avgusta g. Slavko Večerin. MZA mu je poslala stotak v novomašni dar. Njegova mama že leta nabavlja za MZA kuverte prvega dneva vseh novih znamk. MZA sodelavka, ki se je pred leti vrnila iz Belgije domov, je praznovala
15.	avgusta 40-letnico redovnih zaobljub. Sestri Ivani Cvi-jin želi tudi MZA še mnogo let misijonskega sodelovanja.

V SLOVENIJI JE VODSTVO
za papeška misijonska dela prevzel dr. Franc Mikuš, prijeten, misijonsko usmerjen duhovnik ljubljanske škofije, ki je župnik pod Šmarno goro. Prelat dr. Vilko Fajdiga je odložil vodstvo kot nacionalni direktor.
Od sodelavke v Beogradu čujemo, da je g. Franc Jereb lani praznoval 50-letnico mašništva. V maju je bila s. M. G.na seji misijonske komisije v Zagrebu. Na Čukarici je umrl dolgoletni pionir brat lazarist Krištof.
Preko Pariza bo odšla v misijone usmiljenka Anka Burger, iz Novega mesta doma, ki je vstopila v red kot medicinska sestra in je delovala v Ljubljani v KC.
Dne 2. avgusta so imeli enodnevno srečanje misijonarjev na oddihu v Stični. Medškofij-ski misijonski svet ga je pripravil. O. Kokalj o njem poroča v Družini koncem avgusta. Profesor dr. Anton Strle je v meditaciji podal misel škofa Baraga: »Misijonski poklic je največji božji dar.«
Z Madagaskarja so bili trije: Puhan, Štolcer in s. Amanda Potočnik; iz Filiponov brat Mrzel; iz Dominikanske republike salezijanec Ozmec; iz Burundija je bil salezijanec
Mlinarič; iz Toga p. Delčnjak; iz Botswane uršulinka Škerlje-va; iz Tunizije je bila s. Sirni-kova, ki deluje med muslimani; jezuitski brat Vidmar iz Indije; medicinska sestra Rous iz Zambije in salezijanec Maruša iz Chile, preje na Ognjeni zemlji. Dne 21. avgusta je bilo Srečanje v Kranju: o. Kokalj, g. Majcen, trije škofje prisotni.

Dne 31. avgusta je v Crest-view negovališču v Waco, Texas, umrla 90 let stara Anna Smeker, roj. Podorsek, bivajoča 39 let na 6414 St. Clair Ave. pred preselitvijo k hčerki v Waco, TX, vdova po pok. Johnu, mati Ann Lindberg in Adolpha (pok.), 2-krat stara mati, 4-krat prastara mati. Pogreb je bil v Waco, Texas, pokopana pa bo v družinskem grobu na Vernih duš pokopališču.

However, we’ve been able to combine serious work with rather healthy doses of fun and good times. No doubt, there are periods of extreme tension (trying to get 17 guys to concentrate on the music at an early Sunday morning rehearsal after you’ve run out of coffee and donuts). But for every moment of aggravation we’ve experienced joys and satisfactions to last a lifetime. Tokyo Experience

Santa Monica, Calif. — Our visit this March/April to Japan was most interesting, revealing Japanese culture and tremendous growth in all areas of their economy.
Back in early September 1945 I was granted a 12 hour shore leave and saw some, of the devastation of our bombing -some 30 miles of rubble from Yokosuka to Tokyo except for the restored rail line which I rode into Tokyo. (Then I was an Assistant Gunnery Officer on the USS Atlanta, a light cruiser. Now I am a retired U.S. Navy Reserve officer.)
The same area seen today is rebuilt with no evidence of the ravages of war. Tokyo is a vast metropolitan city with some 12 million inhabitants and with most efficient transportation systems, especially rail and subway. Shinjuku station, for example, transits about 1 1/2 million passengers each morning and evening - one of the world’s busiest and most efficient passenger transfer points.
This leads to a comment regarding Japanese courtesy. My wife and I had paused after leaving the CHUO line to verify we were heading correctly for the ODAKYU line which would take us to the Sangubashi station which is walking distance to our daughter’s house. The placards and signs identify the station, the past and the next station for each rail line in Japanese characters and equivalent English along with direction arrows. Our pausing prompted a Japanese gentleman to ask us, in good English, if he could be of help. After we said, “Yes,” and explained our destination, he asked us to follow him, which we did through the masses of travelers to our train. He verified that we were on the Local and not the Express otherwise we would have gone through the Sangubashi station non-stop. This courtesy was repeated in stations whenever we stopped to verify our directions by courteous Japanese.
Wherever we went in Tokyo, Iwakuni, Hiroshima, and Kyoto we were so impressed with the overall cleanliness, no graffiti anywhere, thousands of bicycles and motorcycles (with no locks) standing outside commuter stations, orderly well dressed Japanese, happy and smiling children, and well kept homes, farms, and cars. We noted that nearly all

cars are new in Tokyo and we saw no slums. The macho Japanese however, creates a mess on public sidewalks by his careless (or intentional) discard of cigarette butts.
Our eldest daughter, her husband and their two-year-old son live in the Shibuya Ward near Yoyogi Park (where I jogged with my son-in-law who is Japanese and raised in Tokyo). They are both Assistant Vice-Presidents of New York City financial houses — our daughter with a bank and her husband with an investment concern. We had a great time visiting with them, especially with our grandson. Also, we were honored to meet our son-in-law’s parents and to be invited to their home.
In Tokyo places of interest include the Ginza, Ueno, Asakusa, Akasaka, Roppongi, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, and Shibuyu.
The Ginza is Tokyo’s most famous shopping and entertainment area with thousands of bars. Ueno is best known for its large park with gorgeous cherry trees in April and a home of the arts: Tokyo Metropolitan Festival Hall, the National Museum and many other museums, Ueno Zoo and Aquarium, and other National Treasures. We were fortunate to attend the Tokyo Women’s Choral Club’s free presentation of Japanese folk songs at Ueno Park - our first selection by chance on our visit there.
Asakusa is full of the character of old Japan. Its main attraction is the Buddhist Temple known as Asakusa Kannon. Akasaka (not to be confused with Asakusa) has long been known as a flourishing geisha district along with exclusive nightclubs and discotheques. Roppongi is a cosmopolitan night spot area with coffee shops and bars which appear to wake up at midnight.
Also, the Franciscan chapel in Roppongi has Masses in English. The local Franciscan Church in Yoyogi area has Mdiscs in Japanese only. I found the church full for Mass the Sundays I attended with
the singing beautiful. The Sunday I attended there, the celebrant dedicated his sermon to Buddha and enjoined us to respect the Buddhists and their beliefs - coincidentally it was Buddha’s birthday.
Shinjuku is jammed with skyscrapers and shops, restaurants and cinemas of every kind. The Shinjuku Imperial Garden is the most spacious and beautiful in Tokyo. Ikeburkuro has a complex known as Sunshine City which contains malls and Japan’s tallent building, Sunshine 60, where the world’s fastest elevator lifts you to the top in 35 seconds. Shibuya contains the famous Olympic Stadium, Yoyogi Park, and the famous shrine known as Meiji Jingu. In front of Shibuya station stands the statue of Hachiko, the faithful dog who appeared in front of the station for 10 years waiting for his master to come home, unaware that he had died.
Indicative of the emphasis on education by Japan is that accorded to nursery schools. We attended our two year old grandson Terry’s (Teru) graduation along with his Japanese grandparents and Terry’s father and mother. The featured speaker was the Shibuya-Ku Administrator (Mayor) who spoke on the continued need to educate the young in all aspects and to develop their talents. He thanked the men and women of the nursery school staff for their dedicated and loving teaching. To our great surprise the program included songs and plays by the one year old class, the two year old class, and the three and four year old class. There were some European and Mid-East children in the program also since they were school attendees.
We had never seen such an organized program for such young children. It is interesting to note that Japan graduates some 20*70 more engineers than we do. Their higher education is practically free - tuition is a token $50 a year to attend a public university. Private schools tuition is much higher, of course, and selection is very competitive. Only the most capable and talented go on to future education in Japanese public universities. However, if a person cannot meet the competition for whatever reason in study, his future is dismal. Alternative education programs are not available. There is no public welfare, as such.

“It’s been a week since we left home and have had two days in Zurich where we strolled the Bahnhofstrasse from the train station to Lake Zurich. Then it was off to Belgrade and Novi Sad to visit relatives.
“We spent another two days in beautiful Dubrovnik where the girls walked on top of the wall all the way around the city. We even took a cable car to view the walled-in city from up high.
“Swimming in the crystal clear, blue Adriatic caused the girls to wish we could stay right here. But today we’re in Split, touring Diocletian’s Palace.”

Golden Anniversary
Frank and Mary Koss of Cleveland recently celebrated their 50th anniversary at a party given by son Frank, daughters Dolores and Margaret and their seven grandchildren.
They were married Sept. 2, 1933, at St. Mary’s Church on Holmes Avenue.
Frank is retired from 45 years service at the Fisher Body Division plant on Coit Road, Mary worked at old Cass Drug on E. 185th Street for 15 years. Both are active members of the Slovenian Workmen’s Home on Waterloo Road.

Marino Puhalj, a senior at St. Joseph High School and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Puhalj, has received an Elizabeth Stewart Scholarship to Thiel College, where he plans to major in art.
Debbie Petrich, the daughter of Mrs. Judy Petrich, has graduated cum laude from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Janet Kosten, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Kosten, received her bachelor of science degree in marketing and distributive education from the University of Minnesota.
A summa cum lauda grad, she is a member of Phi Lambda Theta and Phi Kappa Phi honorary societies and has taken a position in marketing and sales in Minnesota.
Janice Miller received a master of science in computer applications from the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine’s biometry
department.
The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kastelic, she had earned her bachelor of science in medical technology at the

Allan Loushin is back at Miami University (Ohio) where he is a senior systems analyst major and sister Renee is attending John Carroll University.
Youngest brother Dennis is a senior at Richmond Heights High School, where he plays on the football team. Oldest brother Kenneth was a 1980 graduate of Purdue University where he played football for the Boilermakers.

On July 27, 100 members traveled to the Fairport Slovene Home for the annual picnic and enjoyed Kenny King’s chicken and side dishes prepared by our ladies. There were balinca games, cards and musical entertainment. Stan Launch, our tour director took a group by bus on Aug. 20 to Fremont, O., to the Rutherford B. Hayes home and then to Milan, O. for lunch and a visit to Thomas A. Edison Birthplace and Historical Museum. Very enjoyable, and another job well done by him.

Mr. Rezin is survived by his wife, Josephine; son, Andrew A.; daughters JoAnn Lampa and Janice Rogel; nine grandchildren; and his mother, Anna.
Anton Snyder Dies, Owned Lyon Dairy
Anton Snyder (formerly Žnidaršič) passed away Tuesday, Sept. 13 in St. Vincent Charity Hospital.
He was the retired owner-operator of the Lyon Dairy, 1166 E. 60 St.
He was the husband of the late Cecilia (nee Smolič). He was the father of Ludwig and Anthony (of Norfolk, Va.). He was the grandfather of Anthony, Darrel, Ronald, Donald, Nancy and Timothy; great-grandfather of Amy and Julie. He is also survived by a sister Anna Zalar and relatives in Yugoslavia.
Mr. Snyder was a member of AMLA No. 17, SNPJ No. 5, and the Euclid Rifle Club.
Arrangements were handled by Zak Funeral Home, 6016 St. Clair Ave. Services were at St. Vitus Church, and burial at All Souls Cemetery.

Louis Oblak, Owned Furniture Store, Dies
Cleveland, O. — Louis Oblak, 83, of 32451 Eddy Road, Willoughby Hills, formerly of 6612 St. Clair Ave., died recently at Euclid General Hospital after a long illness.
He was born in Sv. Gregor, Graben, Yugoslavia, and came to Cleveland in 1926. He and his wife, Jennie, ran Oblak Furniture Store, E. 66th and St. Clair for 45 years, and retired in 1979.
He was the husband of Jennie (nee Adamic), father of Victor (dec.), uncle of Anton Oblak and Marie Žakelj, brother of John, Anton, Joseph, Victor, Ludvik - all deceased of Sv. Gregor; and two younger sisters.
He was a member of KSKJ No. 226, AMLA No. 18, AFU No. 173, Slovenska Pristava, and Baraga Dom.
Mr. Oblak played the part of Judas in a passion play in Europe. When he came to the U.S. He started a group through the KSKJ and the Slovenian National Home in Cleveland put on a passion play which he directed. In this country he also played the part of Jesus in 1930 and 1931.

We visited Sophia University founded by the Jesuit order, coincidentally on graduation day. Most of the women graduates were dressed in their best kimono - very beautiful. The university is highly respected by the Japanese for'* their education programs. I later learned upon return that a Father Vladimir Kos from Slovenia has been a professor there for many years. He is highly respected for his poetry. (See Joseph Zelle article in the Sept. 16 issue of A.H. for further information about Father Kos. — Ed.)
We strongly recommended that tourists planning a trip to Japan obtain a Japan Rail Pass. These are available from the Japan Travel Bureau International, 624 S. Grand Ave., Suite 1410, Los Angeles 90017 and from their offices in San Francisco and in New York City. There is no commission paid to travel agents in the United States to obtain the vouchers for the pass which is issued only in Japan at the Narita Airport and the Japanese National Railways main office in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. Your voucher and passport must be presented for issuance of the one week, two week, or three week Japan Rail Pass - green or ordinary. I purchased our ordinary vouchers early in March for $89.52 each. This entitled us to ride on all Japanese National Railways and Ferrys between the islands for any one week. We rode the famous Bullet train, the Shinkansen to Hiroshima and then the local train to Iwakuni along the southern coast of the main Japanese Island of Honshu on the Inland Sea.
In Hiroshima I was unable to locate an English speaking guide tour so we joined the next available tour bus with a Japanese speaking guide. The highlight was the tour of the
where the grim reminders of the “Little Boy” atomic bomb explosion 38 years ago are on view. We saw also the devastated “Peace Bridge” of the Industrial Promotion Hall, left standing by the Japanese as a grim skeletal reminder of the terrible new force that came into being here on August 6, 1945.
The thought occurred to me that hopefully our super power chiefs of state would meet here. Perhaps as they sign the guest register, jotting down personal impressions of the museum, Reagan and Andropov might consider anew the terrible power of some 50,000 nuclear warheads that they control between them. As two of the 4 million Californians who voted for the bilateral nuclear freeze initiative in 1982, we pray that the two world leaders meet as two human beings at Hiroshima soon and talk. The arms race is world suicide. Imagine what one billion dollars saved could buy - capitalization to plan and initiate building of a highly automated, oxygen blowdown, continuous casting integrated steel making facility capable of producing
25.000.	000 tons of high grade steel a year in Ohio. The Japanese last year produced
18.000.	000 tons of steel in their integrated oxygen blowdown continuous casting facility in Kyushu. They produced 94,000,000 tons to our
60.000.	000 tons and the Soviets 120,000,000 tons!
While on the tour of the waterfront in Hiroshima we saw a number of large Soviet vessels docked there. I was told there is increased trade with the Soviets.
The Iwakuni area was aflame with cherry blossoms ahead of Tokyo by a week or two. Tokyo is at the same latitude as New York City with about
the same weather. We enjoyed taking the cable car up to Iwakuni castle overlooking the gorgeous valley and river. Climbing the many steps to the upper floors of Iwakuni castle was formidable for my wife but she made it with rest stops. Not recommended for overweight persons with or without heart problems. Oh yes, when traveling, eat light. The Western toilets are not available away from the better hotels. Also, carry toilet paper/tissues since that is not available at public toilets where one uses a Japanese toilet hole in floor with a pommel you grasp to prevent falling. One word you must learn is “benjo” to identify your needs.
We were very impressed with the cleanliness on Japanese trains. The mothers of small children take their shoes off so that the seats look as new as when made some 10-15 years ago. There are Western style toilets on the main line Japanese trains as we found on our return with a stop in Kyoto, the old Japanese capital. There we stayed at an old Japanese Inn in the Miyako area surrounded by Shinto Shrines and Buddhist Temples. As the pretty and fluent Japanese tour bus guide in Tokyo explained it, one is born into the Shinto faith, dies in the Buddhist tradition and to be on the safe side, some are Christians in between!
Generally, the Japanese are law-abiding, very respectful of each other, clean and honest. One can walk almost anywhere at night without fear. The relocation of the Sanno Hotel, a recreation and billeting facility for the U.S. military and government per-sonel, was vehemently opposed by residents of the Tokyo area where the new enlarged Sanno Hotel is built, primarily because of our “Ugly American” activities.
Kyoto is a must place to visit. The Miyako Hotel, for example, has Western style rooms starting at 10,000 yen (about

$40) for two per day. The city abounds in Shinto Shrines and Buddhist Temples, some of which are world famous for their gardens. The nearby Maruyama Park and Shrine has the number one cherry tree of Japan in size - resplendent in blossoms. Many Japanese groups take the opportunity to gather at cherry blossom time to picnic in the parks - men in their groups and women in theirs. The singing of the men and the dancing and singing of the women is beautiful to hear and to see.
One realizes how easily the Japanese could have fought on at the end of the war after going through the numerous tunnels on the Bullet train. From the air, the hilly and mountainous terrain which covers most of Japan is ideal defense terrain. During World War II tremendous damage was done to most of the Japanese cities by air bombardment. Even with the shore bombardment of the coastal cities by the Navy there was no sign of surrender from the Japanese. The atomic bombing convinced the Japanese government that further resistance was useless.
While on my second shore leave in September 1945 in Tokyo, an Army officer from Ohio escorted me and two fellow Navy officers from my ship through the numerous caves and underground defense facilities in and about Tokyo. We were amazed to see vast telephone switchboard stations, complete machine
shops and storage facilities jammed with weapons of all kinds in these underground facilities with exits leading through tunnels to dense woods. If the atomic bombing had not taken place, our invasion scheduled for October 1 was estimated to take at least a million U.S. casualties. My brother Albert (OSS-Army) was to parachute with his team in the spearhead attack- on Japan. He was trained at the University of Chicago in Japanese. He has never revealed his secret mission. A1 is now a retired lawyer living in San Diego with his wife (from Gdansk). So we were all f°r' tunate that the Japanese government surrendered unconditionally as a result of the atomic bombing.
The best times of the year to visit Japan is in the Spring °r Fall. Also, the Japanese Railway Pass is not activate until you take your first train or ferry ride; then it must be used because in 7, 14 or 2 days as per your contract it ex" pires whether you use it or not-If you do not use it, you can have your money refunds within a certain limited time-The Foreign Japanese Tourist Information Agency ’D downtown Tokyo (one minute walk from Yurakucho station in front of Denki Building)0 fers all services of need to the tourist - especially Engl>s speaking.
