St. Mary’s buys St. Joseph’s farm
It s official. As of May 1, 1997, St. Mary’s parish is the owner of St. Joseph KSKJ Farm on White Road in Wil-oughby Hills, Ohio. The property consists of almost 30 acres. Within the next month, a committee will be formed rom St. Mary and St. Vitus Parishes to begin preliminary P ans for the proposed Slovenian Cultural Center.

Hollis Resnik is ‘Folksy and Funky’ in Chicago musical about Patsy Cline

All gussied up and newly installed with a full-out star performance by Hollis Resnik, “Always ... Patsy Cline” has moved from its sold-out six-week performance in Evanston to what is clearly going to be a long, long run at the Apollo Theater in Lincoln Park.
Here is one of those simple, but rare and elusive, shows that gets people who don’t go to the theater to go to the theater.
It’s very lightweight; nothing serious beyond down-home sentiments about love and marriage. It’s informal; at the Apollo you can bring your soft-drink cups and beer bottles into the auditorium. It’s communal; there’s much hand clapping and audience participation. It’s folksy and funky; lots of country songs and funky phrases (“He looked like death eatin’ a cracker”). And, above all, it’s about a popular singer w'ho’s even more beloved in death than she was when she was live.

At the time she was killed in a 1963 plane crash, Patsy Cline, then just 30, already had established herself as a tremendously successful singer who could cross over in a big way from the country-western circuit to the mainstream. Her hits, played and replayed on jukeboxes over the years, include “Crazy,” “I Fall to Pieces,” “Honky Tonk Merry Go Round,” “Sweet Dreams” and “Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray.”
They’re all present here, with more than a dozen more, belted out by Resnik with buoyant power and mazing fidelity. She’s not at all like Cline in looks, but she’s got real country twists and twirls in her singing, and she’s a dynamite star presence, besides.
The show is basically a concert of Cline hits that have been strung together on a sweet little storyline, con-veived by Ted Swindley, about Patsy’s friendship with one of her devoted fans.
At the Apollo, in director Brian Russell’s staging, there are four expert musicians led by Luke Nelson in the background, some great Patsy Cline-esque costumes by Nan Cibula-Jenkins and Karin Kopischke, and, as a key factor in the show’s appeal, a shrewd, endearing performance by Sarah Underwood as the good ol’girl who takes Patsy into her heart.
Naturally, after the play has ended and the standing ovation has started, she and Resnik join in a final rousing duet of Cline hits. It holds a lovely surprise, and it’s terrific.
The Patsy Cline show will end in June. Then Hollis Resnik is off to Santa Fe to appear in “Tartuffe” and “The Guardsman.” She is the daughter of Betty and Reginald Resnik of Cleveland and Jadran Singing Society.
Spirited, Independent Slovenia

I love border crossings. They somehow make me feel as though I’m in a black-and-white movie with subtitles. So the border between Trieste, Italy, and Kozina, Slovenia, was a minor disappointment. The most challenging question we were asked by the cheerful customs officers was whether we could demonstrate that our red Fiat was properly insured.
In the restaurant of the nearby tourist information center, equally friendly personnel served us Slovenian beer and wine. We then bought a detailed road map, collected several pamphlets and a hotel rates booklet, and, armed with a guide to Slovenia written by Ed Lenarčič, a Canadian of Slovenian descent I’d met on
the Internet, set off with no particular destination beyond Lipica (called Lipizza under the Austro-Hungarian empire), home of the Lipizzaner horses.
In June 1991, Slovenia, along vvith Croatia, seceded from Yugoslavia, plunging the area into war. The Yugoslav army invaded, and encountered fierce resistance. Surprised and unprepared, Belgrade withdrew. The European Community recognized Slovenia as an independent country in January 1992 and that May it was admitted to the United Nations as its ITS111 member. Slovenia’s war of independence lasted just 10 days and claimed the lives of 66 people. According to a United States State Department Consular Information Sheet issued in February 1996 (the most recent one issued) on
Slovenia, the country was “essentially unaffected by the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina.”
And indeed, there was no evidence of a military presence anywhere when we traveled thorough Slovenia last spring, nor did we see many police. There was one thing, though. “You’ll notice in this area a funny noise apparently coming from your tires as you drive,” wrote Ed Lenarčič about Pivka, the first town we passed after Kozina. “During the independence conflict, many tanks chewed up the road on their excursions from a nearby military base.” We heard that noise, the final vibrations of a brief war as we drove to Lipica.

A friend of mine, who is not Slovenian, but who refers to his mom as “mama”, tells the following true story: “Already at an early age, my mama instilled the love of books in me. She alway* told me that she did not care what I read, as long as I read. Library became a best friend for me. It meant cool drinking water at the fountain as well as quiet atmosphere and helpful library ladies. I escaped to other worlds by reading the books. One «lnf> while walking to my Sth grade class, three miles away, I found * Playboy magazine on the sidewalk. I took it to school and began to read. The kind teacher noticed what I waa reading and called my mama to come to school. What could my poor mama say. D told me she did not care what I read as long as I read and I followed her advice.” My friend Is now an FBI Agent and his MAMA is sure proud of him 1

Was a little tardy going to work this week because 1 was watching “Good Morning, America” which originated from the Scandinavian countries. Monday they were in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Tuesday in Bergen, Norway.
I suppose some of the best dividends derived from going on vacation is being able to reminisce. A few years ago we visited Scandinavia and were at the very places the morning shows were broadcast. Scandinavia is perhaps one of the most world’s most unique locations to visit. There are the low sunny lands in Sweden, followed by the mountains and lakes and fjords of Norway.
The Scandinavians are very protective of the ecology. We found that out in the first 10 minutes in Stockholm. Two passengers were arriving from a different airline and we had to wait 15 minutes for them. Everyone had to get off the bus because it was warm and it was against the law to run a bus engine at idle speed. They don’t want the air polluted with noxious fumes.
That was the warmest day of the entire two weeks.
We spent a lot of time on the water. We sailed overnight on a ship that went on the North Sea between Copenhagen and Oslo. Just about every day we either crossed a body of water on a ship big enough to carry 10 buses and 100 cars, or else we cruised down rivers surrounded by over 200 waterfalls.
The railroad trip from Oslo to Flam is one of the most scenic in the world, ranking right up there with the Durango to Silverton trip in Colorado.
In Norway you are either on the mountains looking at the fjords or actually on the
sea. In July the snow was so deep, it was higher than the bus. On July 4^ we stopped and watched the locals snow ski. They were getting ready for the Winter Olympics in nearby Lillihammer. We had hot chocolate and tossed a few snowballs at each other, just for the fun of being able to do it in the middle of summer.
If you saw the Good Morning show, you may have noticed one commentator on the side of a mountain was shivering so hard, it was uncontrollable. It was often that way in the summer, too.
In Bergen, Norway, on TV they showed the hotel where we stayed, then spent the rest of the program sitting around the picturesque U-shaped harbor. In the summer, this is where the market is located. We purchased a sweater for Madeline from a local designer, Susan Fosse. I liked a certain design, but they didn’t have my size. She said she would custom-make a sweater and send it to me. Sure enough, three months later, it arrived in the mail.
They have a progressive social system where the government pays for all your schooling and retirement. It is costly, though; taxes are over 50% (some estimate up to 70%). That’s why you see a lot of bicycles. There are special paths for them right alongside the auto highways and streetcar tracks. For vacation Norwegians like to stay in tiny cottages they buy which are clustered together in friendly villages.
Scandinavia was one of our most adventuresome vacations, yet exciting with extremely beautiful scenery. We had gone with Tauck Tours and stayed at some of the most majestic hotels in the world. At the 600-year-old Toftaholm we sat around after dinner, drank coffee, and told jokes for 3 hours and laughed until our sides ached. That laughter lasted the entire trip. In a small town in Sweden, I discovered the “Polka Grizer” a peppermint candy. The memories in those two weeks would take a year to
tell and a lifetime to remember.

It is said certain people help influence your life. John Mercina is writing about a friend whose mother stressed the importance of reading. His friend is very fortunate to have such a wise mother. In my case, it was my brother, Ed, who helped instill the love for reading. One summer he brought me to the library and urged me to take out a book whose story centered around sailors trapped in a submarine. My wife also instilled reading in our son since his infancy. To this day, we spend a great deal of time in book stores.
On the other hand, my brother, Bob, stressed the importance of getting out and living a little adventure, especially during vacation. As you can see I still follow both of their wonderful advice. *
As our new young writer Frank Tursic correctly guessed, movies have played a small role in my life. As a youngster I watched the serial , “Don Winslow of the Navy.” What happened? I joined the Navy. I never got to be a Commander as Winslow was, but I met one, Commander Ernie Ryavec, now residing in California.
A few years ago my lovely young bride and I were watching the film, “Misery.” It took place in the mountains of Colorado. That summer we toured the entire state of Colorado.
Then a Christmas TV special had Perry Como singing in Ireland. That summer, we visited Ireland.
A favorite movie is “North by Northwest” starring Cary Grant. The ending took place on Mount Rush-more. That’s where we vacationed last year.
Where are we going this year. Hint: we rented the movie, “Anatomy of a Murder” with Jimmy Stewart. What’s the movie all about? You’ll have to ask Elizabeth Delene of the Bishop Baraga Association who is doing her
thesis on the film.

Speaking of Colorado, 1 saw in the “Glasilo” news-
paper of the K.SKJ fraternal insurance, they will have their next convention at the Red Lion Inn in Colorado Springs. Those lucky delegates hit the jackpot.
In 1991 we stayed at the very same hotel. Besides being located near the Air Force Academy, the food there is terrific, and features one of the best desserts in the world, a birds-nest type of ice cream waffle. It was so perfectly delicious, I can still taste it, six years later.
The first day in Colorado, our local guide, told us to go into the Air Force Academy souvenir shop and purchase a quart of soda pop with the Air Force insignia on it. When finished, he said to keep the container and fill it with water twice a day. He urged us to drink two quarts of water every day to avoid being sick from the high altitudes. It worked, no one was sick, although we had seen other tour members suffer from extreme dehydration.
Speaking of Colorado, stock broker Phil Hrvatin pointed out that Leadville is the highest incorporated city in North America with 10,430 feet at its highest
point. The average height is 10,152 feet.

The May meeting of the American Slovenian Club of South Florida was presided over by vice-president Ed Blatnik. No meetings will be held in June, July or August. With Memorial Day approaching, the deceased members’ names were read following a moment of silence.
Ellie and Stan Meuser had planned to be away, to attend Stan’s granddaughter s first communion in the northeast, followed by a large celebration in Cleve-land to honor Ellie’s 80*. But fate changed that. The ear Ellie was driving home from church on April 19 in aim Beach county, was hit roadside by a car crashing a st°plight. She suffered a Haptured diaphragm and is St,U hospitalized in ICU in ^erious condition. Keep her ln Vour prayers.

Our club was established 23 plus years ago by retirees. Now we have grown old at roughly the same time. “Sunrise, sunset, quickly fly the years.”

Next Year All St. Mary’s Students Will Visit Slovenia
Next year, the St. Mary’s (Collinwood) Slovenian school will take all students able, on a two week excursion into beautiful Slovenia
The plan is to get a busload of students (kindergarten and up) and family to visit various parts of Slovenia. It should be quite an experience and quite a large undertaking for those involved to venture across the ocean with so many children.
The idea is for the students to be able to relate what they’re studying in school to what they will see in Slovenia.
For example, they plan to study “Martin Krpan,” a play, during the school year. A drama club in Studenc will perform it for the kids while they’re there.
Another example is the “kmetska turism” or tourist farm. The students will visit an actual working farm to show the children how it all works. They will also visit Joe Novak’s brother and mother who run a farm.
Included will be demonstration of how old-fashioned Slovenian bread is made in the ovens (peč).

The S.H.A. will provide the transportation in their specially equipped van. This will be an excellent opportunity for these seniors to see all the improvements that have been made at the SNPJ Farm. Inasmuch as the new restroom facilities are completed and are handicapped accessible, we are sure they will enjoy their day. The Waterloo Pensioners will be pleased and happy to assist them in any way.

Two sports - taekwondo and triathlon will be contested for the first time at an Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000.
Olympic Stadium
Sydney’s Olympic Stadium, being built at a cost of A$665 million, will be the centerpiece of Sydney Olympic Park at Homebush Bay. Construction of the stadium began in September 1996 and is expected to be completed at least a year before the start of the 2000 Olympic Games.
The imaginative design will provide seating for 110,000 spectators.

6 Hot Cleveland Polka Happenings

Muldoon’s Saloon on Vine in Willowick, Ohio seems to have really caught on with its Sunday night polka parties. This pleasant, kind of 50’s atmosphere tavern fills a longtime void for regular Sunday evening dancing from 5 until 9 p.m.
One of the owners, Dan Gentile, is pleased with the polka patrons ever since Muldoon’s began in February. On other nights they feature rock or country and, of course, good food is served seven days a week with everything from munchies to full course dinners.
Some of the regular bands revolving are Eddie Rodick and Bob Kravos plus Harry Faint, Don Wojtila, Frank Moravcik and Joey Tomsick. Muldoon’s Saloon and eatery (not associated with the E. 185th establishment) is at 32911 Vine Street.
Meanwhile the leading public establishments on Saturdays are Sterle’s Country House and the Hofbrau Haus, both on E. 55th Street south of St. Clair and the Nottingham Tavern at 18526 St. Clair Avenue. The Friday leader is the Croatian Lodge in Eastlake and the West Park Slovenian Home at 4583 W. 130 St.
Other than those fine establishments, the picnic and festival season is also upon us with the SNPJ Farm, Chardon and Heath Roads in Kirtland every Sunday and the AMLA Recreation Center in Leroy on occasion, such as Memorial Day, with two bands, Joe Fedorchak and Fred Ziwich. Fedorchak is the newest inductee into the International Polka Hall of Fame based in Chicago.
Among the outstanding polka events this summer is the East 185^ Street Festival scheduled for five days, July 30 through August 3, with a dozen different polka bands plus ethnic performers at the Perry School lot and outdoor dance area at Schenely Avenue.
You can get more details on our daily Polka Radio (Cleveland-based) programs on WELW-1330 AM (Lake County) and soon to be expanded and simulcast daily on WRKG-1380 AM (Lorain County), Monday thru Friday 3:15 until 6:00 p.m., Saturdays 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., and 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. (Walt Ostanek), plus Sundays from 9:30 a., until noon. These programs give you the update on all of the polka happenings.
Vadnal Retirement Party
Talk about polka happenings, the Vadnal retirement bash will go down as one of the all time great mid-week polka events on the Cleveland polka scene. Just over 1000 attended festivities on Wednesday, May 7, at Slovenian Workmen’s Home, saluting the entire Vadnal musical family and especially Johnny.
The event was promoted primarily on local WELW radio and through the Quarterly	direct-mail
newsletter of the National Cleveland Style Polka Hall of Fame, which benefited from the event. The Slovenian Home on Waterloo Rd. also reported record sales in their food and beverage concessions.
Most touching was Tony Vadnal’s first appearance in a year since he suffered a stroke. His appearance in a wheel chair on stage and singing and yodeling brought the house down.
Also on stage were Richie, sister Valerie Fortuna, Johnny and Mary Vadnal representing Frank, plus their respective families.
Former Vadnal musicians joined on stage for one heck of a show. There were 20 bands all total and numerous musicians from local as well a out-of-town areas.

We continued north through greening valleys, stopping whenever a village or a view beckoned. We used most of the afternoon to travel the 30 miles to Ajdovščina, where we ate a delicious dinner of veal and pasta and spent the first night of the trip in the Hotel Planika.
For the next six days we traversed the . countryside, from the Julian Alps in the north to the eastern forests and back west to the Adriatic coast, where we sat in shirtsleeves by the sea. We felt the Karst wind and drove through one late spring snow squall in the mountains, the only bad weather on our trip. vineyards by valley roads from town to town in this predominantly rural country.
The secondary roads are paved and meticulously marked. Everyone drives at breakneck speed, blithely passing wherever there’s a car-length of space, be it on a highway or a mountain switch-back. A superhighway, not far from completion, runs from the coast to the Hungarian border, but even on back roads, the country can be navigated north to south or west to east in under five hours.
Slovenia is an art-filled
place. In every town,
churches are crowded with painting and sculpture, their exterior walls decorated with murals. Roadside shrines are numerous and elaborate. Museums, often in buildings that are works of art in themselves, house collections that range from suits of armor to the works of Old Masters and modern Slovenian painters and printmak-ers.
Since it was off season -we saw only a scattering of foreign tourists and no Americans, but crowds of Europeans come to this area in the summer - we were given what amounted to private tours. In Idrija our guide turned off the hot plate under her lunch to walk us through the Town Museum, in a castle that rises over the core of this 500-year-old mining town. The city sits on the second-richest mercury ore deposit in the world, and one can tour one of the disused mine shafts dating from 1500. Well-displayed exhibits trace the history of the mine.
In other rooms are collections of Idrija’s exquisite lace, often sold in Italy as Venetian. We saw one enormous piece - made as a
gift to Tito - that took 15 women two years to make. The craft is still taught in Idrija and one can buy bobbin lace at the school in town at half the price charged by the shops.
In Kostanjevica, in the Krka River valley east of Ljubljana, a woman escorted us through the whitewashed half of a monastery turned gallery. We were shown through the Iron Museum in Kropa, a tiny village south of Bled, by the curator and his wife. But of all the museums we visited, the most wonderful was the Beekeeping Museum in Thurn Manor, down the street from the Church of St. Peter in nearby Radovljica.
In the Slovene language there are two words for death: one for humans and one for other animals. Only a bee’s death merits the human word, so important is it to the country’s folklore and its culture. The history, biology and hand-made tools of Slovenian beekeeping are displayed in a series of exhibits labeled in English, German and Slovene. There are three enormous hives, carved in the shapes of a church, a castle and a man. In summer visitors can also observe a working hive.

What most distinguishes 7 this museum is its remarkable collection of wooden beehive front boards, decorated not only as a practical way of distinguishing among individual hives but also to ward off evil, often through religious scenes and symbols. The oldest is dated 1758 and depicts a Madonna and Child.
On neutral backgrounds, in strong dark contours filled with luminous colors, Noah’s sons hide their father’s drunkenness with a shroud and Wise Men ride fat ponies to Bethlehem. Human foibles are satirized in scenes like one showing four worthless tailors sitting on a scale, outweighed by a goat. For less than $10 each, we bought several reproductions of considerably higher quality than what we found in markets.

8 Memorial Monday Polka Picnic Set For AMLA’s Recreation Center
Each Memorial Day holiday sees the opening for the outdoor season of the AMLA Recreation Center on Kniffen Road in Leroy Township. The occasion is a polka picnic featuring two great polka bands. This year the event will take place on Monday, May 26 — Memorial Day. The gates will open at noon and the music will begin at 1:00 p.m. and continue throughout the afternoon until 7:00. On the bandstands will be the Joe Fedorchak Orchestra and Fred Ziwich and his International Sound Machine. As in the past at this annual event, Slovene singing virtuoso Ed Kenik has been invited to sing along with Joe Fedorchak.
Admission is $7 per person at the gate, but you can save by buying in advance. Advance tickets are available for $6 from the AMLA Home Office, Fairport Slovenian Club, or by calling Stan Modic in Painesville at 1-354-4756. Sponsors of the picnic are AMLA’s Lodge 30 (Fairport area) and Lodge 32 (Warren area).
The kitchen will be open, of course, and will be serving roast beef and sausage sandwiches, french fries, hot dogs, coffee and desserts. The fully stocked cash bar will have a complete range of liquid refreshments available to suit every taste.

Peter Kvaternik, and Gašper Rudolf. The group discussed evangelization in all three Slovenian dioceses. Preparations w'ere also planned for the celebration of the third millennium, the year 2,000.

JANEZ DRNOVŠEK PRED NOVINARJI PRETEKLI PETEK
Glasovanje o pridružitvenem sporazumu z Evropsko zvezo odloženo za teden dni — NATO države in Rusija dosegle pogojno soglasje o razširitvi zveze
Včeraj je državni zbor odložil glasovanje o ratifikaciji pri-družitvenega sporazuma z Evropsko zvezo. Sporazum je bil dosežen že junija lani, a ga slovenski parlament še ni ratificiral. Parlamentarne stranke so se sicer izrazile v prid ratifikacije, vendar so skupine, ki trdijo, da je sporazum protiustaven. Če bi namreč Slovenija postala polnopravna članica Evropske zveze, bi morala uskladiti svoje zakonodaje z nierili, ki veljajo za vse druge c anice. Za slovenski primer bi v naslednjem triletnem obdobju bilo treba za začetek spre-jneniti okoli 80 zakonov, ki posegajo na raz-‘cna področja, od sociala do bančništva, ajbolj sporna potrebna sprememba bi pa 1 a v sami slovenski ustavi, v kateri bi bilo reba črtati 68. člen, ki se glasi dobesedno:

V zvezi s še vsaj za silo odprto možnostjo, da bo Slovenija povabljena k pogajanjem o načrtovani širitvi NATA že v prvem krogu, je pomemben sporazum, ki so ga članice NATO zveze dosegle včeraj z Rusijo. Ta sporazum, ki sicer ne potrebuje ratifikacije parlamentov NATOvih članic in tako ne spreminja bistva zveze, vendarle pomeni določeno sprijaznitev Rusije s tem, da bo do razširitve NATA proti njenim mejam vendarle prišlo, in ji daje določeno besedo pri ukrepih v zvezi s to razširitvijo.
Stališče Clintonove administracije je, da je širitev NATA zgodovinska priložnost za delno popravo napake iz časa Jalte in zelo močan prispevek k utrditvi varnosti in demokracije v večjem delu Srednje in Vzhodne Evrope. Posebno aktivna v tem argumentiranju je državna sekretarka Madeline Albright, sama češkega rodu, in Henry Kissinger, močno besedo ima tudi splošno cenjeni češki predsednik Vaclav Havel, ki je te dni v ZDA. Na drugi strani brega pa prednjači še zelo vpliven poznavalec Rusije oz. bivše SZ George F. Kennan. Obširno poročanje v današnjem New York Times predvsem poudarja možnosti Poljske, Češke in Madžarske.

Koncert Korotana—
Pevski zbor Korotan ima to soboto koncert v farni dvorani sv. Vida. Pričetek bo ob 7h zv. Sodelovali na koncertu bodo tudi učenci obeh slovenskih šol. Po koncertu bo za zabavo in ples igral orkester Staneta Mejača. Vstopnice so po $8 in jih boste lahko dobili tudi pri vhodu.
Zajtrk—
To nedeljo bodo graduirali učenci 8. razreda Slovenske šole pri Sv. Vidu. Po slovenski maši (prčetek ob 10.30) in po graduaciji bo v avditoriju zajtrk, prebitek katerega bo pomagal kriti stroške potovanje nekaterih učencev in bivših učencev v Slovenijo julija letos. V avditorij lahko pridete od lih dop. dalje.
Spominska sv. maša—
V nedeljo, 25. maja, bo pri Turški Mariji na Chardon Rd. spominska maša za žrtve 2. svetovne vojne in po njej. Maša bo ob 12. uri, ob 3h pop. bodo molitve na pokopališču Vernih duš.

Dne 13. maja je v Euclid Meridia bolnišnici umrla 78 let stara Mary Vidmar, rojena Miklavčič v Clevelandu, žena Williama, mati Bernadette Sterk in Williama, 7-krat stara mati, 2-krat prastara mati, sestra že pok. Franka, Josepha, Harolda, Rose Krotky, Jennie Kovach in Ann Snyder, članica ADZ, Materinskega kluba pri Sv. Vidu in Kluba upokojencev St. Clair Ave. Pogreb bo jutri, v petek, iz Želetovega zavoda zj. ob 9.15, v cerkev sv. Vida ob 10., od tam na pa pokopališče Vernih duš. Ure kropljenja bodo danes pop. od 2. do 4. in zv. od 7. do 9.
Edward F. Strumbel
Umrl je 85 let stari Edward F. Strumbel z Mentorja, prej živeč na Floridi in v Euclidu, mož Caroline, roj. Petrič, oče Barbare Strumbel in Carol Ferritto, 2-krat stari oče, brat Franka, Jennie Komar ter že pok. Josepha, Anthonyja in Josephine Strumbel, bivši lastnik Strumbel and Radell Quality Meats v Clevelandu. Pogreb je bil 14. maja s sv. mašo v cerkvi sv. Marije v Mentorju.
Joseph Blatnik
Dne 5. maja je umrl 81 let stari Joseph Blatnik, mož Carolyn, roj. Valentine, oče Carol Kramer in Linde Smiley, 6-krat stari oče, 6-krat prastari oče, brat Helen Žele, Marie Sprenger, Freda ter že pok. Johna, Josephine Sidak, Anne Holm, Agnes Gulan in dvojčice Gertrude Erne. Pogreb je bil privaten.
Slov. dom za ostarele—
Jutri zvečer ima Slovenski dom za ostarele svojo letno sejo. Seja se bo pričela ob 7.30 v SDD na Waterloo Rd. Registriranje tistih, ki imajo glasovalno pravico, se bo pričelo že ob 7h zv. Seja sama je odprta javnosti. Med drugim bo izvoljenih 5 direktorjev od vsega skupaj 15 za triletno dobo.

Pohvalno o Sloveniji—
Preteklo nedeljo je v svoji prilogi o turizmu New York Times namenil kar tri članke o privlačnosti alpskih krajev s posebnim in zelo pohvalnim poudarkom na Slovenijo in tudi Trst. Ob člankih je bilo tudi več lepih, barvnih fotografij. V angleškem delu najdete začetek teksta enega teh člankov.

Vrnitev nekdanjega begunca v domovino vzbuja spomine...

Potovanje v srednjo Evropo za konec tedna ni posebno prijetno, če je samo za poldrugi dan. Na ljubljansko letališče sem priletel v soboto opoldne in se vrnil že zgodaj v ponedeljek.
Nisem namreč imel izbire: ko me je prijatelj, ki sem ga spoznal pred pol stoletja v begunskem taborišču v Spittalu na Dravi, v Avstriji, povabil kot enega od svojih dveh so-posvečevalcev pri njegovem posvečenju za ljubljanskega nadškofa, sem se vabilu odzval.
Ko sva se po končanem o-bredu objela, sem mu rekel: »Dolga je bila pot od Spittala!« Seveda ne zemljepisno, pač pa v prenesenem pomenu.
Takrat smo bili begunci iz lastne domovine, preteže z navidezno nenehnim komunizmom. Ker se nam je takrat zdelo, da nam je bila pot v domovino zaprta, smo se ozirali po deželah, ki bi nas hotele sprejeti za svoje. Družina novega nadškofa se je preselila v Argentino, moja družina pa je pristala v Kanadi. Novi nadškof se je pridružil redu sv. Vencencija Pavelskega, je študiral v Parizu, se vrnil sredi šestdesetih let v domovino in predaval na teološki fakulteti v Ljubljani.
Novi nadškof ni bil pohlevno molčeč, kar ga je zavedlo v neprilike s takratnimi komunističnimi političnimi privrženci. V začetku osemdesetih let je odšel v Rim, kjer je prevzel službo v papeškem tajništvu za dialog z neverujočimi in ka-
sneje postal tajnik papeškega sveta za kulturo. Njegovo ime je FRANC RODE.
Moj obisk je bil kratek, toda vreden spomina. Znamenit, ker mi je priklical preteklost, tudi zato, kar me je spoznal s sedanjostjo.
Eno od jutranjih nedeljskih maš sem opravil v domači fari, kjer sem bil rojen in krščen. Pred mašo sem srečal enega od bivših sosedov, kakšni dve leti starejši od mene, ki je bil zaradi mladoletnosti ohranjen pri življenju ob masovnem more-nju tisočev drugih mladih mož nasprotujočih komunistom v juniju 1945. leta. Odkar je komunizem leta 1990 padel, sosed lahko svobodno pripoveduje, kako se je moral vsa leta pretvarjati, da nič ni vedel o pokolih, ki jih še do danes zločinci nočejo priznati.
Po maši sem imel zajtrk pri bližnjih redovnicah in poslušal njihove zgodbe o ponižanju, ki so jih dan za dnem doživljale celih petnajst let, in kako težko jim je bilo najti primerna stanovanja.
Kamorkoli sem šel sem poslušal pripombe o sedanjem stanju v državi. Leta 1989-90, kakor mi je izrazil prijatelj, je Slovenija prešla iz pol-diktatu-re osemdesetih let v pol-demo-kracijo devetdesetih. Razlika ni majhna. Če ste 1985. leta uporabljali besede, ki so bile politično nepravilne, ali izražali resnico, ki je bodla v oči, ste šli v zapor. Sedaj pa morda zaradi tega izgubite samo službo.

Dvajset let »SLOVENSKE PESMI»
CHICAGO, 111. - Pred 20 leti je čikaška slovenska skupnost zedinila svoje glasbene moči v močan zbor in orkester. Kot nalašč smo imeli takrat dovolj kapacitet, dobre volje -ih umnega vodjo patra Vendelina dr. Spendova. Ob strani je ostal samo pevski zbor »Preše-ren», zaradi svoje dopadljive tradicije, ki je ni kazalo ugasniti.
Tiste čase smo imeli lepo število krepkih slovenskih družin, ki so rastle in zrastle v talentirane pevce in/ali godbenike. Še eno; imeli smo plodovitega mojsta, kot omenjeno, v osebi svetoštefanskega župnika p. Vendelina, ki je ocenil trenutek: zdaj ali nikoli! Božja volja nam je primaknila še skrbnega orglarja Alfreda Fišin-gerja, ki je molče dal svoje zadnje moči domovini na oltar... In vzkipelo je...
Sledili so koncerti, leto za letom, čedalje lepši, mikavnej-ši; dvorana že ni mogla sprejeti vseh slušateljev in smo najemali mogočno cerkev sv. Pavla v Chicagu, ter hram sv. Jožefa v Jolietu. Na spored so prišli tuji velikani, nikogar se nismo »ustrašili«.
Ob pevcih je zrastel naš lastni orkester, ki je razvil nekoliko solistov — ponos patra Vendelina, ki ni miroval, dokler ni izklesal kvaliteto in ugodje. Poslušna mu je bila čreda, vadila je tudi doma in se je ni sramoval postaviti na oder. Gostovanja so nam širila sloves, ponosno smo predstavili slovenske in klasične modele našim rojakom — in domačinom — v Jolietu, Milwau-keeju, Clevelandu, Torontu in še kje.
Vendar se je ta ura polagoma iztekala, ko nam je mladina dozorevala za - razhod - za
šolami, za poklici, za utemeljitvijo novih družin.
DRUGO DESETLETJE
Življenjska nuja je jela redčiti naše vrste. Drug za drugim so odhajali izurjeni mladeniči, v krogu celotnih družin, ki so zapuščale oder. Takšne mene pač prineso družinski problemi, individualni in nepreložlji-vi, zato jim ni oporekati. Nastale vrzeli je skušal mašiti »Prešeren«, tudi pod taktirko p. Vendelina, in je uspelo nekoliko predstav. Le-ta ni imel vidnejšega podmladka, a pešati je pričel tudi sam vodja, dotlej večno mlad in neizčrpan.
Ostalo je vse na starejših plečih, kar ne pomeni perspektive. Krčil se je tudi program, od predstave do predstave in izpadal je, žal, dragoceni skladateljski opus p. Vendelina (Turki na Slevici, Pozdravljena, in druge). Hrbtenico je sicer nadomestil dopolnjeni kla-virist Filip Arko, vendar še je tudi to veliko upanje umaknilo in je le trdna volja preostalih moči še vzdrževala pevsko izročilo.
Zbor se je ugledno trudil in ohranil svoja vodila, medtem ko se je orkester ugasnil za vselej (razen občasnih solističnih vključkov). Prišlo je do tesnejše povezave z graditelji Slovenskega doma na lemont-skem pobočju in z razvitjem Pastoralnega centra. To je odtegnilo koncentracijo za negovanje umetnosti — petja, folklore in godbe.

CLEVELAND, O. - Kar precej lepega smo doživeli v tej dobi pod našim stolpom.
Sredi aprila je bil prvi koncert naše pihalne godbe pod vodstvom Janeza Nemca. Polna šolska dvorana je lepo nagradila pihalni zbor z bučnim aplavzom. Hvala Vam za ves trud in še veliko korajže za napiej!
Na zadnji soboti v aprilu, je bila prodaja peciva Oltarnega društva. Hvala vsem za vse prineseno, vsem delavkam in kupcem vsega.
Zadnjo nedeljo v aprilu, je bil sestanek Zveze Oltarnih društev v župniji sv. Lovrenca. Najprej smo se ustavile v cerkvi, počastile Jezusa z litanijami in prejele blagoslov, potem smo se podale v šolsko dvorano, kjer smo poslušale poročila o delovanju posameznih oltarnih društev iz slovenskih župnij. Hvala Vam za vso gostoljubnost.
Prvomajska nedelja nam bo ostala v lepem spominu. Pri deseti sv. maši sta prepevala otroški in mladinski zbor, pod vodstvom g. Jožeta Černeta in
Janeza Nemca, v zahvalo za desetletno delovanje našega župnika. Popoldne pa je bilo presenečenje za našega župnika, g. Janeza Kumšeta. V Slovenskem domu na Holmes Ave. so pripravili banket v zahvalo in spodbudo za nadaljnje delo.
V	torek, 6. maja zvečer, smo imeli Fatimsko Marijo v naši cerkvi. Lepo smo jo počastili s petimi litanijami in se ji približali vsak s svojo prošnjo in zahvalo.
V	petek zvečer smo se zopet udeležili Materinske proslave naše Slovenske šole. Otroci so lepo zapeli mamicam in zaigrali igrico: Mirko in Abeceda. Hvala vam, otroci, za vaše trdo delo, vam, učiteljstvu, in g. Rudiju Knezu, ki še vedno rad prihaja med mladino in ji izroča svoje talente.
Naša predsednica Oltarnega društva, Ivanka Kete, je še vedno v bolečinah. Zdravniki se trudijo, da bi pozdravili njeno nogo, a gre vse zelo počasi. Mi pa vsak dan nanovo molimo in prosimo za zdravje.

Njen nastop je živahen, vendar strogo ritmičen, dojemljiv za razpoložljivo kapaciteto; reši jo tudi primerna družabnost. Svoj zbor ona smatra nosilcem, ne samo izvrševalcem danih nalog. Sprejemljiva je za kritiko in opazke, torej pr>' lagodljiva odrskim težavam in publiki.

Na pragu tretjega tisočletja nudi »Slovenska pesem« ne samo mikaven spored, marveč tudi tiho - neizrečeno - zagotovilo, da ne bo odnehala, ampak vzdrževala pristno povezavo med odrom in dvorano. Prav demokratično je izbrala spored, s cvetkami iz prejšnji časov, kot nekakšen povzete nepozabne preteklosti, a P° okusu samih pevcev. Izvil seje venec prijetnih, gostolečih in harmoničnih skladb, katerim se je največ ploskalo zadnja in predzadnja leta; nežen šopek, mehek in čustven, majsko P° joč toda le delno posvečen ne beški Materi. Pevnost je Pr's a do izraza vseskozi, z večjimi i
manjšimi poudarki.
Dvorana se je domala na polnila. Zvesti gostje iz waukeeja so nas počastili m manj kot prejšnja leta. Kako lepo je peti prijateljem,^ ve vsakdo, in menda upravičen0 upamo, da jih bo rado spet za^ neslo v Lemont ob vsaki taksni prireditvi. Klavirska spremlja' va je zadovoljila.
Ker je šlo v glavnem za P°^ novitev nekdanjih pesmi, J1 ne naštevamo, razen z oporn bo, da je bilo odpeto tudi ne kaj ameriških vzorcev, ki J1 je zbor dorastel (z ozirom ^ nižjo zahtevnost) in jih P dal z dopadljivim učink0 Težišče je ostalo v mirni v dah zlasti pred koncem ® certa. Izjemo je nudila PoZ vna vabljivka »V hribih se dan« kot zaključek.	,j
V veliko veselje smo si ^ pojav samega patra Ven e med slušatelji, saj jo na 1 -j. gotovo mojstroval vsaj s sv mi spomini. SKD Triglav v Milwaukeeju...
Bila je čudovita majska nedelja, ki jo je ljubi Bog naredil prav za nas Triglavane, ki smo se letos prvič zbrali na Parku v večjem številu. Park se prebuja v zelenju - vse je počiščeno in bregovi so posuti z rožicami, kot bi bili pokriti z vijoličasto preprogo. Mize in klopi so tudi že pomite in razpostavljene okoli doma. Kuhinja je pospravljena in bara že čaka na goste. Celo leseni muzikant pri drevesu že vleče svojo harmoniko.
Bila je naša prva seja. Povedali so, da so tri generacije čistile park; ni čuda, da je vse tako lepo. Medtem, ko smo mi modrovali in delali načrte za novo sezono, so se najmlajši z v°zički in kolesi prevažali po Parku.
Pričeli smo z materinskim dnevom kot vsako leto. Naj-•ttlajši so se dobro pripravili in S0 P°častili svoje mamice in stare mame.

V	dolgih zimskih večerih, ko ni bilo mogoče iti na Park, so naša dekleta in mlade mamice enkrat na teden igrale odbojko oz. volleyball, za Triglav, in spet dobile prvo mesto, za kar so jim vsi Triglavani čestitali. Seveda, »ta stari« tudi niso samo sedeli pri TV, ampak so hodili »bovlat«, da si ohranijo svojo mladnostno prožnost v pripravi na poletno balinanje na Parku. To se je dobro izkazalo, ko so po sestanku uradno odprli balinarsko sezono.
V	načrtu je, da otroci dobijo nov drog za košarko in pa nov čoln. Velikonočni »egg hunt« je letos odpadel, ker vreme ni bilo primerno.
Šolsko leto se bliža koncu. Je čas za prvo sv. obhajilo in za graduacije. Bilo je kar pet prvoobhajancev, naših Trigla-vančkov. Naslednji bodo gra-duanti iz osmega razreda in iz »high school«. Nekaj jih gre naslednje leto na univerzo Marquette v Milwaukeeju, eden pa celo na univerzo Yale.
To je že naša tretja generacija. V drugi generaciji pa imamo doktorje, odvetnike, zdravnike, učitelje in vse mogoče uradnike in uradnice, le »ta stari« smo ostali brez vseh teh »titeljnov«, ker smo le delali, da se bo našim otrokom bolje godilo.
Vsi skupaj pa imamo naš Park, ki nas druži in nam je v veselje. Kdor ne verjame, naj nas pa pride pogledat in bo videl, da smo vsi Veseli Slovenci, stari, mladi in srednji!
Za konec se pa spomnimo še naših bolnikov: Jože Butinar, Ralph Coffelt in Ana Levičar, in jim vsem želimo ljubega zdravja, da čim preje pridejo spet med nas na Park.
Na Veliki četrtek je Triglav dobil še eno novo članico, malo Nino, ki ji želimo dobrega zdravja in dobro rast, da se bo kmalu pridružila trumi malčkov pri gugalnici pod zelenim drevjem.
Vsem želimo eno lepo pomlad in na svidenje v Parku!

Kulturni razgled iz Trsta po Srednji Evropi
Trst/Gorica — Za kulturni razgled nad Srednjo Evropo je Trst - vsaj geografsko - najprimernejše opazovališče, saj na njegov poldnevnik gravitirajo narodi tega prostora.
Vendar se postavlja vprašanje: je Srednja Evropa zgolj geografski ali tudi kulturni pojem? Pred leti je namreč tekla o tem diskusija med nekaterimi kulturniki iz srednjeevropskih dežel. Nekateri so zagovarjali tezo, da Srednja Evropa dejansko predstavlja neko realno kulturno obnebje, izrazito različno od drugih. Drugi pa so posebnost tega prostora zanikali. Tako je na primer nemški pisatelj Handke menil, da je Srednja Evropa meteorološki pojem.
Dejansko je za obe stališči mogoče navesti argumente za in proti.
Da utegne Srednja Evropa predstavljati neki skupen kulturni prostor, v prid tej tezi vsekakor najveljavneje govori argument skupne zgodovine narodov, ki so nekoč živeli v okviru iste države, namreč avstrijskega cesarstva. Avstrijski Nemci, Madžari, Slovenci, Hrvati, Čehi, Slovaki, deloma Italijani, Srbi, Romuni in Poljaki so stoletja imeli isto prestolnico Dunaj, istega vladarja, isto valuto, isto državno upravo, da ne govorimo o isti rimskokatoliški religiji.
Tako si je težko predstavljati, da ne bi ostalo v tem prostoru nekaj zgodovinske usedline te skupne preteklosti. O njej vsekakor pričuje arhitektura, ki z nekaterimi značilnostmi povezuje na primer Trst, Zagreb, Lvov, Krakov, Prago, Budimpešto.
Sicer pa je bila do nastopov modernih nacionalizmov pripadnikom teh različnih narodov skupna tudi državna zavest in do neke mere tudi skupno avstrijsko domoljubje. Dva velika avstrijska vojskovodja, Radetzky in Boroevič, na primer sploh nista bila Nemca, ampak je bil prvi Čeh, drugi pa liški Srb.
Lahko govorimo tudi o živem kulturnem pretoku znotraj tega prostora, ki je imel tako svetovno izžarevajoče središče, kakor je bil glasbeni, gledališki in znanstveni Dunaj. Naj omenimo na primer presaditev mlade psihoanalize v Trst ali dramsko afirmacijo Slovenca Cankarja v drugem močnem žarišču države, v Pragi Kafke in Werfla.
Bilo bi torej nenaravno, če bi se ta prostor med Jadranom in Tatrami ne navzel kakšnih značilnosti nekdanjega velikega skupnega imperija.
Vendar pa je na drugi strani mogoče postaviti tudi vprašanja kakor: kakšne skupne poteze pa je mogoče razvideti v duhovni zgodovini omenjenih narodov?
Če se ustavimo pri literaturi, tej verodostojni zgodovinarki duše narodov, so razdalje med temi dušami znatne. Kaj imata na primer skupnega Slovenec
Cankar s svojim evangeljskim zanosom in italijanski Zid Sve-vo s svojim buržujskim psiho-logiziranjem? Ali kaj imata skupnega češki Žid Kafka s svojo metafizično tesnobo in Hrvat Krleža s svojo ekstro-verzno družbeno kritičnostjo?
Saj naj prihajajo nasprotujoča si sporočila celo iz istih območij: če je na Češkem Kafka grozljivo zazrt v skrivnost bivanja, se nam prav od tam oglaša proletarsko razuzdani smeh »dobrega vojaka« Svej-ka; če se v prvih desetletjih tega stoletja mladi Evropejci napajajo z marksistično estetiko madžarskega filozofa Lu-kacsa, se drugi mladi lahko hranijo z nasprotnim, evangeljskim sporočilom njegovega sorojaka, škofa Totha Ti-hamera. Prav tako imajo mladi Slovenci med obema vojnama na voljo tako različne duhovne izvirke, kakor so na primer neotomizem Aleša Ušeni-čnika, stalinizem Edvarda Kardelja in personalizem Edvarda Kocbeka.
Razlike med vsemi temi duhovnimi sporočili so tako velike, da nas navajajo k misli, da bi bilo prej kot skupne srednjeevropske poteze med njimi smotrno iskati globlje psihološko sorodstvo: na primer občutje moderne tesnobe, ki je tako ali drugače skupno vsem, po izgubi tradicionalnega krščanskega središča.
Isto seveda velja za narode, katerih dušo izražajo. Človek bi sicer rad videl povsod vladati ono čudovito dunajsko Ge-miitlichkeit, ki je dajala življenju poseben čar. A v tem stoletju je Srednja Evropa že plen demonov nacionalizma.
Naj torej v tem prostoru ne vidimo prav nobene skupne civilizacij sko-kulturne poteze?
Mogoče jo je zaznati v podobnih zgodovinskih usodah, saj so narodi tega prostora vsi po vrsti postali v zadnji vojni žrtev istega napadalca. Da bi jim mogli pripisati neko izrazitejšo miroljubnost? Morda če bi vzeli za merilo način, kako sta se državno razšli Češka in Slovaška, a ne, kako se je zadnje čase obnašal nekoč avstrijski Balkan.
A če bi te svoje misli spravil na neki skupni imenovalec v nraveh Srednje Evrope, bi tvegal domnevo, da okrog našega poldnevnika le diha neka svojevrstna civilnost: da na tem, srednjeevropskem poldnevniku, človeški osebek morda kvotira više kot drugje.
In Trst, ki je naše razgledišče?
Vlaki so vozili vanj z Dunaja in iz Prage, a njegova duša je ostala emporijska. Rilke je prišel na jadranski breg pesnit svoje Dunajske elegije in Wer-fel se je sklonil nad mitom Miramara, a italijansko tržaško kulturo je morala vzeti v roke judovska kolonija.
V fašističnem dvajsetletju je bila slovenska navzočnost pokopana: kaj šele slovenska kultura. Vendar je prav v tem času rodila enega svojih naj-večjih lirikov, Srečka Kosovela, ki je sredi kraške gmajne, kakšen kilometer nad Trstom, izpel svojo smrtno ekstazo. Rodila je genialnega skladatelja Marija Kogoja. Rodila je slikarje Pilona, Černigoja, Spacala.
Slovenski pisatelj, prebivalec srednjeevropskega območja med madžarsko pusto in Jadranom, morda najlepšega med vsemi, diha njegov zrak in njegovo zemeljsko in človeško darovitost, vendar pa njegovo sporočilo nosi posebno stigmo do včeraj nesamostojnega naroda.
Ta stigma je še izrazitejša, če gre za avtorja iz narodne manjšine in preživelca fašističnega kulturnega genocida. Takšen pisec, ki se je moral jezika, v katerem piše, ilegalno naučiti sam, ne more pojmovati literature kot zgolj estetski fenomen: pojmovati jo more le kot sporočilo človečnosti.
Pri tem mu je večinski romanski svet v kulturno in tudi estetsko spodbudo. Čuti se na oknu in razgled mu gre na široko, od Jadrana do italijanskih Alp v zahodni dalji.

Javna glasila v tranziciji?

Trst/Gorica — V lepo prenovljeni stavbi Zavoda sv. Stanislava v Šentvidu nad Ljubljano je bila v soboto, 19. aprila, okrogla miza o temi Javna glasila v tranziciji s podnaslovom Prispevek k demokratizaciji in pluralizaciji medijev na Slovenskem. Prireditelj zelo tehtnega pogovora je bil Radio Ognjišče.
Osrednja nit vseh posegov na okrogli mizi je bilo mnenje, da so slovenska sredstva obveščanja še vedno v rokah t.i. »leve garniture«, se pravi: v rokah ljudi, ki so tudi v času Jugoslavije imeli odločilno vlogo v sredstvih obveščanja. Na javni tribuni o slovenskih medijih, ko se z ne ravno najlepšo besedo reče danes sredstvom obveščanja, je nastopilo sedem slovenskih mož, ki so tako ali drugače povezani z mediji.
Tadej Labernik, ki je direktor Slovenske tiskovne agencije, je spregovoril na temo Demokratizacija in sprememba medijskih sistemov in bil mnenja, da v demokratični Sloveniji žal še vedno velja pravilo, da so novinarji v službi oblastnikov in močnih, vplivnih ljudi in politikov. Med svojim iskrenim posegom se je Labernik tudi dotaknil časnikarske etike in dejal, da je v Sloveniji zelo razširjeno pisanje »ko-mentirnih poročil«, ki žal prevečkrat zamenjujejo objektivno poročanje o nekem dogodku. Pluralizacija po njegovem mnenju na področju sredstva obveščanja v Sloveniji teče prepočasi.
Žarko Petan, znan režiser, dramaturg, duhovit pisec aforizmov in bivši generalni direktor Radio-televizije Slovenija, je spregovoril na temo Pluralizacija javnega zavoda RTV Slovenija. V svojem živem posegu je dejal, da se je že takoj v začetku, ko je sprejel službo direktorja RTV Slovenija, zavedal, kaj ga na tem delovnem mestu čaka. Dejal je, da je sprejel službo predvsem zato, ker je bila glavna naloga v novi državi pluralizacija medijev.
Petan je dejal, da se ni dalo kaj dosti spremeniti predvsem zato, ker takratni Demos ni bil enoten, saj so različne komponente gledale na sredstva obveščanja različno; predvsem je povedal, da ni bilo dovolj do-
brih kadrov, ki bi lahko zamenjali dotedanje časnikarje. Zaradi tega tudi ni bila možna t.i. »lustracija« sredstev javnega obveščanja; s tem izrazom se danes v Sloveniji označuje menjava vodilnih kadrov v slovenskem javnem življenju.
Petan je dalje dejal, da je prav zaradi majhnega števila časnikarskega kadra v Sloveniji na RTV Slovenija ostalo tako kot prej, saj nikogar niso vrgli iz službe in nikogar zamenjali. Bil pa je mnenja, da v Sloveniji ne more biti samo en del družbe demokratičen, ampak mora celotna slovenska družba stremeti za demokracijo in pluralizacijo.
Pokazal je še na odvisnost medijev od tistih, katerim so namenjeni, in zatrdil, da v Sloveniji še velja pravilo: »Danes krojijo medije lastniki in uredniki!« Obenem je dejal, da je RTV Slovenija vseeno postala najbolj objektiven medij v Sloveniji, in to tudi po zaslugi urednika Lada Ambrožiča. Bil je tudi mnenja, da je zelo odvisno od vsakega posameznega časnikarja.

lamentu so svobodne, toda se ponavadi končajo v napadih in protinapadih, v podtikanjih in sumničenjih, zlasti, če se večinska stranka v vladi čuti ogrožena. Pravično sodstvo je še vedno samo v sanjah. Sedanjo oblast imajo v rokah še vedno isti ljudje kot prej: ideološko nevtralni so se pridružili komunistični partiji, kot je pikro pripomnil drugi prijatelj, si pridobili dobre položaje, se zdaj pretvarjajo, da so demokrati z namenom, da ostanejo na oblasti.
Toda situacija še zdaleč ni brezupna. Cerkev, ki je bila in včasih še je edina pomembna opozicija vladajoči nomenklaturi, je močna je čuječa. Zdi se, da kljub vsem prepirom, pomanjkanju discipline, podkupljivosti in političnega manjvrednostnega kompleksa, postajajo resnično demokratične stranke močnejše.
Novega nadškofa moto, ki je bil povzet iz pridige o teoloških vrednotah vere v šestnajstem stoletju, je: Stati inu obstati — to je stati pokončno in vztrajati v teh časih. Točno se zaveda, kaj je s tem izraženo.

Saša Veronik, znan slovenski časnikar s televizijskih zaslonov, je podal Kritični pogled na novinarsko prakso. Bil je mnenja, da so vsa sredstva obveščanja v Sloveniji slaba, saj ne upoštevajo osnovnih pravil časnikarskega kodeksa, da o deontologiji niti ne govorimo. Nanizal je tudi vrsto oslarij, katerim smo priče tako na televiziji kot v časnikih, saj smo vsak dan priče nenatančnemu poročanju o politiki, hujskanju lokalnih dopisnikov proti državi, priče smo preštevilnim mladim poročevalcem, ki ne poznajo težav starejših ljudi in zato o njih ne poročajo. Dejal je tudi, da v Sloveniji še ni videl enega TV posnetka-poročila, ki bi bilo korektno oblikovano.
Omenjal je korupcijo, ki da je med novinarji v Sloveniji zelo razširjena, in bil mnenja, da se bo Slovenija v svetu promovirala le s tem, da bo gospodarsko in pravno napredovala.
Nasploh je bil Veronik mnenja, da je slovenski žurnalizem grob in aroganten; v podporo tej trditvi je nanizal vrsto sočnih primerov iz vsakdanje slovenske časnikarske prakse. Menil je, da se »medijska tranzicija« v Sloveniji še ni začela.
Predsednik krščanskih demokratov Lojze Peterle je v Zavodu sv. Stanislava nastopil s posegom, kateremu je dal naslov Soodvisnost medijev in politike.
Povedal je, da so mediji ključni predpogoj demokracije in demokratizacije slovenske družbe. Rekel je, da je bivše partijsko prilaščanje medijev v Sloveniji sedaj zamenjalo strankarsko prilaščanje javnih občil. Kot politiki, ki je aktivno sodeloval v Demosu, je tudi dejal: »Prepričan sem, da Demos ni padel samo zaradi privatizacije, ampak in predvsem zaradi vprašanja medijev.«
Ko se je Peterle spominjal na začetke pluralizacije medijev v Sloveniji, je povedal, kakšne težave je imel sam, ko je s svojo stranko SKD priboril frekvence za Radio Ognjišče. Takratni premier mu je namreč dejal: »Lojze, sedaj vas bom vrgel ven iz vlade!«
Ko je govoril o vplivu politike na delo časnikarjev, je navedel primer nekega političnega mogočneža, ki se v slovenskem parlamentu rad pohvali z besedami: »Mi pokrivamo 80 odstotkov slovenskih novinarjev!«
zavzel za vprašanje človekovih pravic, ki jih morajo bodisi spoštovati časnikarji kot zahtevati bralci. Zavzel se je za »kritično distanco« časnikarjev in to do vsega družbenega dogajanja.
Janez Markeš, časnikar tednika Mag, je govoril na temo Avtonomija(e) medijev. Takoj je začetku je pribil, da je avtonomija medijev v Sloveniji prej izjema kot pa pravilo. Hkrati je bil mnenja, da je Slovenija prostor izgubljenih priložnosti.
Markeš je opravil tudi dober zgodovinski pregled odnosa do medijev; menil je, da se o svobodi tiska ni mogoče pogovarjati, če ni demokracije. Je tudi prepričan, da so sredstva obveščanja dejansko res četrta veja oblasti, sila, ki mora o-blast nadzirati, jo kontrolirati in opozarjati na njene napake. Prepričan je, da v Sloveniji še ni avtonomije novinarstva, ker še ni vzpostavljena moderna država.
Za njim je spregovoril urednik tednika Mag Danilo Slivnik, ki je v dvorani naletel tudi na najbolj radodarne aplavze.
V nasprotju z ostalimi je Slivnik brez dlak na jeziku povedal, da slovenski časnikarji točno vedo, kaj delajo, ker jih t.i. levica pripravila do tega, da so ji še naprej v službi in ji tudi opravljajo levji delež vsega umazanega posla. T.i. levica se je kapilarno oprla na slovenske časnikarje, ki so ji tudi v današnjem času ostali zvesti in so dejansko njeni dvorni norčki.
Malce privoščljivo je Slivnik tudi dejal, da nastopi tragedija takrat, ko se politika ukvarja z mediji samo takrat, ko je sama v težavah. Izredno jasno je tudi nakazal manipuliranje z resnico in mediji, ko je Pov®' dal, da t.i. levica v Sloveniji investira tudi v edino dobro komercialno TV mrežo POP TV; tako skrbi, da se pozornost slovenske javnosti odvrača od politike.
Bil je tudi mnenja, da je stara nomenklatura v bivši Jugoslaviji tudi na slovenskih tleh vedno zelo skrbela za medije in jih obvladovala; to se danes žal nadaljuje.

Pokojni je bil rojen 28. junija 1901, v vasi Tatinec, župnij® Predoslje na Gorenjskem. Iz njegovega življenja je posebno razvidno, da je v težkem času preizkušnje v naši domovini med prvimi spoznal, kje mu je pravo mesto, ter se pridružil domobrancem, ki jim je bila poglavitna naloga braniti dom in svetinje slovenskega naroda.
Po prihodu v Ameriko je bila njegova glavna zaposliteV pri “Cleveland Twist Drill Co.”, kjer je delal do svoje upokojitve polnih 15 let. Bil je član društva Tabor SPB, Upokojencev Slovenske pristave, in društva sv. Vida KSKJ št. 25.
Pogreb je bil 14. aprila iz Želetovega pogrebnega zavoda v cerkev Sv. Marije Vnebovzete, kjer je bila darovana sv. maša ob spremljavi petja in zaključnih obredov za pokojne.
Lepa udeležba v cerkvi in spremljava na pokopališče Vernih duš je bila priča, daje bil pokojnik priljubljen in poznan med tukajšnjimi Slovenci.
Iskrena zavhala g. župniku Janezu Kumšetu in g. Jožetu Černetu za redno prinašanje sv. obhajila ob prvih petkih na dom in kasneje v Dom ostarelih na Neff Rd.
Hvala g. Jožetu Božnarju za zadnjo sv. Popotnico, ki mu je bila v poslednjih trenutkih življenja posebna tolažba.
Hvala vsem društvom, katerih je bil pokojni član, za molitve, rože, udeležbo pri sv. maši in spremljavo na pokopališč® Vernih duš.
Prisrčna hvala vsem prijateljem, ki so ga redno obiskovali in mu bili v bolezni prijetnp družba in pomoč.
Hvala g. Rudiju Knezu in pevkam za lepo petje pri P°' grebni sv. maši, tako tudi nosilcem krste in vsem, ki so g® pospremili na njegovi zadnji poti.
Končno, zahvala še vsem, ki ste prišli pokojnika kropil« darovali za sv. maše ali dobre namene.

Pismo Združenja lastnikov razlaščenega premoženja članom ameriškega zveznega kongresa in vladi
Pred tedni sta bila ponatisnjena dva članka iz Dela o pismu, naslovljenem na ameriške kongresnike s strani zgoraj omenjenega ZLRP. Po navezavi stikov z ameriškim predstavnikom te organizacije g. Vladimirjem Bevcem (»American Owners of Property in Slovenia«) je bilo pretekli teden objavljeno sporočilo te zadnje organizacije. Ta teden posredujem tekst omenjenega pisma, v izvirni angleščini. Tako lahko bralci berejo isti tekst kot prejemniki pisma v zveznem Kongresu in State Departmentu. Z objavo soglaša g. Bevc. Dalje, g. Bevc je posredoval še tekst opozorila, ki ga je ZLRP pripravljeno objaviti v raznih vodilnih finančnih časopisov po svetu in z njim morebitne investitorje obvestiti o stališču ZLRP, da bi bilo investiranje v podjetjih v Sloveniji, ki še nimajo po ZLRP pravno nespornega lastništva zelo tvegano. tion of the law, hoping eventually to annul it. They continue holding our property and in some cases are trying to transfer it to their supporters.
The law required that denationalization be the first phase of the ongoing and by now nearly completed privatization process. Unfortunately, the record of the implementation is dismal: only some 30 percent of the denationalization claims, amounting to not more than 10 percent of the total value of all 46,000 claims, have been processed so far.
We, the former owners of the nationalized property, continue to demand restitution of our seized assets. Although our rights are guaranteed under the Slovenian Constitution, we are confronted with a systematic obstruction of the law by the authorities. This systematic obstruction shows the intent of the Slovenian government to continue the unjust practices of the past. In numerous instances the authorities continue to trade or otherwise dispose of the property of the dispossessed owners and refuse to return it.
With the new Constitution and a number of new laws Slovenia has, at least in theory, changed its social and political order. This change can be meaningful only if the economic order also undergoes a change. Yet such change remains impossible unless the most important articles of the new Constitution (as well as the articles of international conventions concerning basic human rights to which the Republic of Slovenia is a signatory) are implemented. The Congress, in enacting amendments to the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 and (the) Foreign Trade Act of 1974, required that “The Secretary of State shall transmit to the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Committee on Foreign Relations of the Senate, by January 31 of each year, a full and complete report regarding the status of internationally recognized human rights, within the meaning of subsection (A) in countries that receive assistance under this part, and (B) in all other foreign countries which are members of the United Nations and which are not otherwise the subject of a human rights report under this Act« 22.U.S.C. 215 In (d) (1).
The responsibility of the United States to speak out on behalf of international human rights standards was formalized in the early 1970s. In 1976, Congress enacted legislation creating a Coordinator of Human Rights in the U.S. Department of State, a position later upgraded to Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor. In 1994, the Congress created a position of Senior Advisor for Women’s Rights. Congress has also written into law formal requirements that U.S. foreign and trade policy take into account countries’ human rights and workers rights performance and that country reports by submitted to Congress on an annual basis. The first reports, in 1977, covered only 82 countries receiving U.S. aid; in 1995 a total of 193 countries, including Slovenia, were covered.
The State Department’s Human Rights Report for the Republic of Slovenia of March 1996 does not report the failure of the Slovenian government to observe the human rights of all persons to own and enjoy property, an internationally recognized human right specifically set forth in Article 17 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The report for Slovenia, prepared by the American Consul in Ljubljana, Slovenia, to
whom our members have repeatedly communicated complaints concerning the violations of this right by the Slovenian government. (Op. ur., tak je tekst, ki ga posredujem brez bistvenih popravkov, saj gre za tekst, ki so ga pač videli ameriški kongresniki idr.) We have taken this matter up with the Country Officer for Slovenia in the Department of State as well as with the Deputy Office Director in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor in the Department of State.
Both officials felt that the Department of State may not be required to consider the human right to own property equal in importance to other human rights. Since they could not point to a published policy of the Department of State or any other authority United States substantiating their views, they promised to seek clarification from the Department’s legal counsel. Attorney Nigel Purvis in the Department of State’s Office of Legal Adviser subsequently held that Congress determined the priorities of human rights problems to be included in the report and that property rights were not included among thse; he, however, cited no published directive of Congress. We respectfully ask the Congress to direct the Department of State to report fully and completely the results of its investigation of the observation of the right to own and enjoy property in Slovenia and to comment on the reports and complaints that have been brought to the American foreign service officials and consular personnel in Slovenia.
In the earlier settlement of American claims against the Yugoslav government, those American citizens who were naturalized after the year 1945 were excluded by the Department of State and the Foreign Claims Settlement Commission. The present situation, however, deals with a right conferred by the Slovenian law enacted in 1991 on all claimants who were citizens of Yugoslavia in 1945 regardless of their citizenship status in 1991 when the Law on Denationalization was enacted. Several thousands of persons entitled to the settlement of their property claims under the new Slovenian legislation were American citizens prior to the enactment of that legislation and are thus entitled to recover their property interests. These American citizens are experiencing a de facto denial of their claims.
We believe that the American diplomatic representatives in Slovenia should protest vigorously against the discriminatory treatment of the American citizens who have filed claims for the return of their property under the 1991 Denationalization Law.
The Foreign Assistance Act of 1961, Title 22, United States Code, Section 2370 (e)(1)(C), provides that
the President shall suspend assistance to the government of any country which has taken actions, which have the effect of nationalizing, expropriating, or otherwise seizing control of property owned by United States citizens.
We respectfully ask Congress of the United States of American to ensure that the Administration apply Title 22, United States Code, Section 2370 (e) in case of the Republic of Slovenia by suspending all assistance and support to that government because it has, after it enaqted the Law on Denationalization in 1991, again de facto expropriated, seized and taken control of property of United States citizens and continues to violate, deliberately and systematically, Article 17 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The suspension should remain in force until such time as the Republic of Slovenia fully and fairly settles all the outstanding denationalization claims. Koroški NAŠ TEDNIK v krizi
Drage bralke, spoštovani bralci!
Zbor narodnih predstavnikov Narodnega sveta koroških Slovencev (NSKS) je na svoji zadnji seji (petek, 4. aprila 1997) sklenil, da mora Naš tednik izhajati v manjšem obsegu (16 strani) in to samo še v črni barvi. Po mnenju ZNP naj bi to služilo reševanju finančne krize, v kateri se nahajata NSKS in Naš tednik.
V čem so konkretne finančne težave in zakaj je do njih prišlo, lahko berete v stališču izdajateljev NSKS oz. njegovih zastopnikov predsednika Nan-tija Olip in osrednjega tajnika Franca Wedeniga (op. ur. AD: objavljeno v sosednjih stolpcih na tej strani). Kot uredništvo Vas želimo opozoriti na posledice, do katerih bo prišlo v primeru, da ne bi uspelo čimprej zagotoviti izhajanje Našega tednika v dosedanji obliki.
•	Krčenje obsega Našega tednika pomeni precej manj informacij o življenju naše narodne skupnosti, zlasti še, kar zadeva dogajanje v naših občinah. Pri tem se dobro zavedamo, da bi lokalni dogodki pravzaprav potrebovali še več prostora — sploh še, če želimo nagovoriti nove naročnike.
•	So področja, ki so bila doslej, mdr. zaradi pomanjkanja prostora, oskrbovana dokaj mačehovsko. Tako na primer gospodarstvo in mladina. V primeru zmanjšanega obsega Našega tednika bo gotovo več ko težko, to zadevo zadovoljivo rešiti.
•	Vsak časopis se zaveda, da mora poleg krajših obvestil posredovati tudi obširnejše prispevke (npr. reportaže), s katerimi naj bi posredoval poglobljeno informacijo o pomembnih zadevah. Cim manj ima za to na razpolago prostora, tem težje lahko zadovolji to potrebo.
•	Da igrajo pri posredovanju informacij slike izredno

pomembno vlogo, je vsakomur jasno. Kako to žurnali-stično nujnost upoštevati ob skrčevanju časopisnega obsega?
•	Kakšen pomen imajo za časopis barve, je prav tako vsem, ki imajo opraviti s časnikarsko stroko, jasno kot beli dan. Ni niti enega časnikarskega strokovnjaka na Koroškem in zunaj nje, ki bi si lahko predstavljal časopis samo še v črni barvi. To sta nam mdr. tudi potrdila glavna urednika Reinhold Dottolo (koroška Kleine Zeitung) in*dr. Helhvig Valentin (KTZ).
•	Pomen atraktivnega oz. večbarvnega tiska so prav tako poudarili tisti, ki so bili odgovorni za uspešni volilni boj SJK, EL oz. samostojnih občinskih list. Zelo dobro se zavedajo, da oblika posredovanja informacij danes ne more biti enaka kakor npr. pred 20 leti.
•	Najmanj tako pomembne pa so barve tudi za tiste, ki želijo v časopisu inserirati. Izkušnje Karla Sadjaka, ki je pri Našem tedniku odgovoren za oglase, so več kot zgovorne. Vsekakor lahko izhajamo iz tega, da bo časopis samo v črni barvi imel negativne posledice tudi za postavko »dohodki iz oglasov«.
•	Navsezadnje pa ne gre prezreti, da smo z letošnjim letom povišali letno naročnino na 500.- šilingov. Dvomimo, da bodo naši naročniki radi več plačevali za nekaj, kar je postalo okrnjeno in manj vredno.
Če ne bo uspelo zagotoviti finančne podpore za izhajanje Našega tednika v dosedanji obliki, je Naš tednik obsojen na smrt na obroke. Tega se ne zavedamo samo v uredništvu, o tem so prepričani tudi vsi tisti, ki imajo bogate strokovne izkušnje na časnikarskem področju.
Zato pozivamo slovensko in avstrijsko vlado, da hitro u-
krepata in sistematično zagotovita obstoj ter sodoben razvoj slovenskega časnikarsta na Koroškem.

Prof. Justin Stanovnik je
govoril na temo Medij-sodobni učitelj ljudstva. Najprej se je na glas vprašal, če sploh vsi vemo, kaj tranzicija pomeni, saj je to veliko več kot le prehod iz nekega stanja ljudi v popolnoma drugo. Boji se, da bodo na Slovenskem tudi nove sile iz nekega izključujočega sistema prišle v drug izključujoč sistem, saj je obče znano, da hočejo stare sile obdržati oblast v rokah.
Prof. Stanovnik se je zavzel predvsem za to, da bi v Sloveniji tako šolstvo kot vse demokratične sile dosegle »zdravo distanco do medijev«, kot je sam poimenoval odnos do sredstev obveščanja. Bil je tudi mnenja, da hoče prejšnja o-blast »na način manevra obdržati svojo oblast in bi zato morala biti vodilo časnikarjem predvsem kritika«.
Ko je govoril o sedanjem trenutku v Sloveniji, je dejal: »Vsi govorimo neučinkovit, mrtev jezik! Svoje usode nismo vzeli v roke, ker govorimo neresničen jezik.« Citiral je tudi pesnika Eliota, ki pravi: »Toliko trpljenja, toliko trpljenja, a tako malo spoznanj!«
Prof. Stanovnik je tudi dejal, da je slovenski človek precej emancipiran, saj si drugače ne zna razlagati izidov zadnjih volitev, ko je več kot polovica volivcev dala svoj glas pomladnim strankam, ki dejansko nimajo velikega vpliva na medije. Slovenski človek je torej kritičen do slovenskih medijev!
»Problem medijev je problem demokratizacije!... Slovenci žal nismo imeli zrelih politikov, ki bi že v času totalitarizma ustvarili nove koncepte, nove vizije za Slovneijo,« je dejal prof. Stanovnik. Po njegovem mnenju je sicer res, da je medijska kultura razpršena kultura.
Ob koncu svojega posega je prof. Stanovnik od šole in Cerkve naravnost zahteval, naj poskrbite za zrele ljudi, »naj vzgojita ljudi, ki bodo imeli distanco do medijev«.
Seveda ni potrebno posebej poudarjati, da se je po posegih razvila več kot dveurna debata, v kateri so bili posegi vseh nastopajočih še poglobljeni. Govorilo se je tudi o zlomu časnika Slovenec in o veliki potrebi po novem dnevniku, ki ne bi bil v rokah t.i. levice. Predvsem je bilo številnim prisotnim popolnoma jasno, kako pomembna so sredstva javnega obveščanja in kontrola nad njimi. AOP/ GLAS

Drage bralke in bralci, drage naročnice in naročniki Našega tednika!
Kmalu bo zaokroženo peto desetletje obstoja Narodnega sveta koroških Slovencev in izhajanja njegovega glasila »Naš tednik«. To bo v letu 1999, tik pred prestopom v tretje tisočletje. Prezgodaj je še za jubilejno razpoloženje. Zdaj nas tarejo drugi problemi. Narodni svet se je namreč z Našim tednikom vred znašel v okoliščinah, ki resno ogrožajo nadaljevanje obetavne poti v novo obdobje. Brez ovinkarjenja povedano: finančni položaj Našega tednika je alarmanten. Bremenijo nas milijonski dolgovi in primanjkujejo nam ustrezna finančna sredstva za nadaljnje izdajanje Našega tednika v običajnem obsegu in znani obliki.
V tem trenutku nam veleva odgovornost, da opozorimo članstvo in bralstvo, pa tudi avstrijske in slovenske oblasti, ki jim je prav tako naložena skrb za ohranitev slovenske manjšine na Koroškem, na krizno finančno stanje, ki ga v glavnem povzroča nekritje dolgov in izdatkov Našega tednika.
Ce gre pot prestrmo navzdol, je treba potegniti zavore, da zacvilijo. Prav to je Narodni svet kot izdajatelj NT zdaj storil, in sicer po sklepu Zbora narodnih predstavnikov: omejitev obsega NT na 16 strani in ukinitev barvnega tiska. Samo to seveda še ni nobena rešitev, saj bi čez leto razbremenilo proračun zgolj za nekaj sto tisoč šilingov, hkrati pa ima takoj zelo negativne posledice. Zato naj bi bil to le kratkoročen ukrep, neprislišen signal, da je potrebna nujna pomoč, za kateor se imajo zdaj brigati vsi pristojni organi naše organizacije.
Gotovo ne pretiravamo, če trdimo, da je Naš tednik osrednjega pomena za narodnopolitično, kulturno, športno in gospodarsko življenje celotne narodne skupnosti.
NT je stalna živa vez med bazo in centralo, je dosleden zagovornik in glasnik samostojnega političnega gibanja koroških Slovencev, kar potrjujejo tudi Enotna lista s svojimi frakcijami po občinah, druge samostojne liste in Skupnosti južnokoroških kmetov. Podobno se da trditi o vlogi NT za kulturna društva, za zadružništvo in za iniciative na drugih področjih.
Naloga in vloga NT sta torej najtesneje povezani z življenjem slovenske narodne skupnosti in z uspehom njenih organizacij in ustanov. Tako poslanstvo pa NT lahko izpolnjuje le pod pogojem, da se ravna po kriterijih medijske stroke, da razpolaga z ustreznim obsegom in da je sodobno oblikovan.
Sami skušamo krizo blažiti z doslednim varčevanjem pri izdatkih, z večjo delovno storilnostjo in z izboljšanjem na do-
hodkovni strani - tudi naročnino smo že zvišali. V resnici pa s takimi potezami' ni mogoče rešiti problema, ker zeva prevelika luknja. Če želimo - v narodnostnem interesu - držati raven in kontinuiteto dejavnosti organizacije in izdajanja NT, je treba držati tudi kvalificirano delovno osebje in zagotoviti osnovne delovne pogoje. To, menimo, je nesporno. Izhod torej ne more biti v »uničevalnih ukrepih«, kot bi to bila odpoved (itak številčno skromnega) osebja in nadaljnja redukcija Našega tednika, marveč samo v prepričevanju dajalcev subvencij za nujno rešitev krize in zagotovitev osnovnih pogojev delovanja z višjimi dotacijami.
Dejstvo je, da sta tako Narodni svet kakor tudi Naš tednik eksistencialno odvisna od podpor, tistih iz Avstrije, Še bolj pa onih iz Slovenije. D°' hodki iz naročnine, oglasov in drugih prispevkov krijejo 1£ pičlo četrtino izdatkov. PoC*' por je bilo v letu 1996 precej manj kot prej, stroški pa zaradi draginje iz leta v leto rastejo, letos grozi nadaljnje skrčenje sredstev. O tem nevarnem razkoraku smo informirali dajalce subvencij, le da doslej m
bilo ustreznih reakcij.
Če vse strukture naše narodne skupnosti, ki jim je NT pn srcu, želijo časopis, ki po svojem obsegu nudi dosti pros*0' ra poročanju z raznih področjih dejavnosti narodne skupnosti in je po zunanji oblik in z barvnim tiskom bolj Prl' vlačen, se morajo tudi zavedati finančnih potreb in pomen3 solidarnega zadržanja.

RVZina, 11. maja 1997 — V tihoti in umirjenosti dolenjske Pokrajine v Mirni peči je v slabem letu dni od začetka gradbenih el zraslo novo središče molitve ter ljubezni do Boga in ljudi — armel Marije, kraljice angelov, ki ga je na praznik sv. Jožefa elavca v navzočnosti številnih duhovnikov, redovnic in redovni-0v ter dobrotnikov in vernikov od blizu in daleč blagoslovil ljubljanski nadškof in metropolit dr. France Rode.

Da, to je bil res dan, ki ga je naredil Gospod, kakor je v svojem nagovoru večkrat poudaril nadškof Rode — ker je Gospod v svoji previdnosti Cerkvi na Slovenskem dal zagona v njeni pomembni razsežnosti premišljevalne molitve in motrenja božjega bistva, v razsežnosti torej, ki je »nujno potrebna Cerkvi, da ne zapade zgolj v aktivizem, le v zunanjo dejavnost, ampak se zaveda, da je bistvo Cerkve in vsakega kristjana živeti za Boga, dajati s svojim življenjem slavo Bogu, premišljevati o Njem, ki je naš začetek in konec«.
Novi samostan, v katerem bodo karmeličanke živele »veliko avanturo božje ljubezni«, je tako blagoslov za vso dolenjsko zemljo, za vso krajevno Cerkev in končno za vse človeštvo, a hkrati tudi klic slehernemu kristjanu: služiti Gospodu v samoti in molitvi, v prijateljskem odnosu in zaupnem pogovoru z Njim niso poklicani le redovnice in redovniki, ampak v svojih življenjskih okoliščinah vsak veren kristjan, kajti le v zbranosti in obrnjenosti k Bogu sta varnost in mir, kot tudi današnjemu človeku, sporoča sv. Terezija Avilska.

vrata — pred mašo so sestre številnim svojim prijateljem in dobrotnikom omogočile ogled vseh prostorov v hiši — a za pred svetom zaprtimi samostanskimi vrati se prav temu istemu svetu odpirajo nova vrata v duhovno razsežnost življenaj v tesni povezanosti z Bogom, ki jo sodobni človek v naglici in pehanju za zgolj na videz bistvenimi stvarmi vse prevečkrat spregleda; zato pa mu jo odpira odpoved karmeličank. Naj tudi njihovo predanost ljubezni do Boga in človeštva spremlja molitev, zapisana na listini, vzidani pod temeljno ploščo:
»Marija, kraljica angelov, daj, da bo ta redovna družina v tišini in skritosti te hiše kakor ti vedno ohranjala božje besede ter jih premišljevala v svojem srcu in dosegla v moči Svetega Duha popolno ljubezen v službi slovenske Cerkve ter z molitvijo in odpovedjo nenehno slavila Presveto Trojico.

Ljubljana — Na osnovni šoli v Horjulu so se z razstavo spomnili svojih babic in prababic in pokazali, kako so na začetku tega stoletja šivale doma in v delavnicah, najprej ročno, pozneje pa že s strojem na nožni pogon. Veliko ljubezni in potrpljenja so morale imeti, da so ob svečah in pretrolej-kah sešile obleke za delo ali lepše priložnosti. Vse, česar niso požrli molji in lesni črvi na podstrešjih so učenci prinesli na razstavo.
Pod vodstvom mentorja li kovnega krožka Branka Lipni ka so učenci predmete nabirali po Horjulu in okoliških vaseh Našli so šivalni stroj in stol, ki ga je uporabljala znana horjulska šivilja Urša Potrebuješ (Pipanova) ob koncu prejšnjega stoletja, še zdaj bi bila uporabna šivalna mizica Frančiške Škof (Škofičeve) in krojaški pribor mojstra Bernarda Železnika (Mežnarjevega) z Vr-zdenca. Od tam je tudi laneno platno, ki ga je pred drugo svetovno vojno stkal Janez Trček (Raztresen). Odkrili so obleko Marjance Rupnik (Stražarjeve) z Dobrove, sešito leta 1917.
Obiskovalcem so želeli predstaviti zgodovino šivalnega stroja, ki se je začela pred približno 200 leti. Pred iznajdbo je bilo šivanje ročno in zelo zamudno, kaj se je dogajalo potem, sta opisala Tina Pucihar in Aljoša Jarh Milovanovič, delovanje stroja pa Jure Burja in Klemen Kržišnik.
Učenci so se po spomine zatekli tudi k starim mamam. Rok Janež ima babico, ki je dopolnila 87 let, pa se ji zdi kot včeraj čas, ko se je pred

davnimi 70 leti učila šivati. V uk jo je vzela šiviljska mojstrica Marjanca Korenčan, ki je stanovala na hribčku, nekoliko oddaljenem od Horjula. Babica se je učila pri njej od jutra do večera, petnajst mesecev, potem pa je šivala doma. Najbolj so se ji posrečile moške srajce, ki jih zdaj gotovo ne šiva nobena šivilja več.
Boštjanu Gabrovšku je babica š ponosom povedala, da je bila v tistem času edina šivilja v Zaklancu. Šivala je za Za-klančane in ljudi iz drugih vasi. Ko se je primožila v Horjul na kmetijo, je šivala samo še za domače, in še to v glavnem pozimi, ko je imela več časa. Sukanec, gumbe in drug šivalni pribor je kupovala v trgovinah v Zaklancu ali Horjulu. Zdaj ne šiva več, ker so ji opešale oči, naučila pa je svojo hčer in na roko še vedno zakrpa Boštjanu nogavice. Tudi šivalni stroj znamke Afrana, ki je bil tiste čase najboljši, še vedno stoji v kotu njene sobe.
Po metrsko blago, koščene gumbe in igle so hodile šivilje v horjulsko trgovino Pri Jernač, ki je dobila ime po starem očetu Jerneju. Oskrbovali so se v večji trgovini pri Majerju v Ljubljani, trgovino pa so odpirali po potrebi. Tudi na kredo so dajali, saj mnogi niso imeli denarja, je zapisala Katja Šušteršič. Babica Blanke Delalut se še dobro spominja, kako je k njim vsako leto prihajala šivilja in teden dni šivala nove predpasnike, bluze, krila, spodnje perilo in srajce. Za hrano in stanovanje je pokrpala tudi stare obleke.
S Šuštarjevim očetom, ki je izdelal zadnja konjska komata, ko je bil star 80 let, sta pripravila pravi intervju Luka Čepon in Erik Škrjanec. Najstarejšega krojača v dolini Bernarda Železnika pa sta spraševala po angleškem što-fu, kamgarnu in gaberdenu Viktorija Batagelj in Aljaž Vrhovec. Lutke za razstavo so izdelali Luka Čepon, Tina Pucihar in Štefan Vrhovec.

Misijonska srečanja in pomenki

mora spremeniti dosedanji naslov in zapisati novega, ki je prav tako rezidenca enega našega ustanovnega člana, g. Rudija Kneza, vendar v njegovi novi rezidenci in se glasi:

Pri probaciji testamenta so advokati in sodniki zelo strogi in natančni, in če ne bi bil naslov točen, lahko MZA izgubi njej namenjeni dar, kar bi seveda bila v vsakem primeru znatna škoda.
Opazil sem tudi v letih sodelovanja, da se mnogi starejši bojijo, da bi njihovi otroci ali potomci vedeli za take darove. Seveda je to žalostno znamenje, ki dokazuje, da je vera mlajših šibka ali vsaj zelo sebična, ker mislijo v takih slučajih predvsem, da bi sami dobili po smrti staršev ali sorodnikov čim več.
Boga hvalimo za mnogoštevilne zveste sodelavce in pionirke naše MZA. Ne smemo pa spregledati, da je med našimi rojaki, tako pri starejši kot pri mlajši generaciji, veliko takih, ki niso nikdar v življenju o misijonih niti slišali. Dovolj, da vsak teden čitate imena umrlih med nami v naši četrtkovi AD. Iz testamentov smo dobili zadnja leta za MZA malo. CE bi večina vsaj nekaj zapustila, bi letno imeli veliko več pomoči za vse naše misijonske garače.
Seveda, sam sem med njimi, mnogi redno darujejo za vsak klic v potrebi. Lahko zato testament kar pozabimo, ker ga redno in stalno izvršujemo. Damo, ko je mogoče in koli-
kor pač zmoremo. A pride iz vere in ljubezni do ubogih. Dolgoletni pionir MZA
Frank Staniša, iz Geneve, Ohio, je v bolnici. Leta poseben dobrotnik Karmeličank v Sori. Molimo zanj!
Salezijanski brat Ludvik Zabret za zlati redovni jubilej in misijonar Pavel Bernik, oba v Indiji, sta v Sloveniji preko poletja. Na zdravljenje pride z Madagaskarja tudi lazarist dr. Janez Puhan. Za druge še ne vemo, dasi jih bomo verjetno kasneje doma opazili. O. Podgrajšek omenja, da bo v septembru v Kanadi, kjer je upal srečati tudi mene, če bi bil kje v bližini.
Francka in Jože Skrjanc iz Pueblo, Colorado, sta bila ob 90 letih starosti zelo srečna, ko ju je njihov duhovni sin, leta podpiran pri študijih v Rimu, povabil za mašniško posvečenje za praznik Sv. Petra in Pavla, 29. junija, ob 9. uri v ljubljansko stolnico sv. Nikolaja, in 6. julija ob 10. v župnijsko cerkev v Trebnjem za novo mašo. Novomašnik Ro-
man Globokar je študiral v Rimu. Ob kanonizaciji sv. Perboyreja sem ga tam osebno srečal. Škrjančeva omenjata, kako težko pot sta prehodila zadnjih 50 let. Od duhovnika v Sloveniji sta izvedela, da dobi v škofiji sedaj vsak novomašnik od faranov dar keliha in mašnega plašča.
Frančiškan o. Hugo Delčnjak se je oglasil z lepim pismom 8. aprila iz Altagracia župnije v Venezueli. Spominjamo se ga iz dela v državici Togo v Afriki pred leti. Bil je prijatelj o. Filipa Inocenca Ferjana dolga leta. Tako piše:
»Ko prosimo odpuščanje, prosimo ne samo za to, kar smo slabega naredili, ampak tudi, kar smo dobrega opustili. Prosim, da mi odpustite, ker samo tako dolgo odlašal in opustil zahvalo za prejeto pismo in poslani ček za $500 in to vse od lanskega decembra. Z menoj imate slabe izkušnje glede korespondence in to je krivda z moje strani.
Jaz Vas občudujem, ko po tolikih letih in garanju, še vedno izžarevate toliko delavnosti, navdušenja in železne volje v Vaši službi duhovnika in dobrotnika misijonarjev širom sveta. Brez vsake hinavščine in prilizovanja, Vam izrekam svoje občudovanje.
Pravkar minulo praznovanje Kristusovega odrešilnega Vstajenja je potekalo v velikem odzivu ljudi, to leto bolj kot prejšnja. Morda je stiska, ki jo ljudje prestajajo (velika gospodarska kriza) pripomogla, da iščejo ponovno pot molitve, prisluh božji besedi in prejemanje zakramentov. Daj Bog, da bi se pač uresničilo, da tistim, ki Boga ljubijo, vse pripomore k dobremu.
Glede gradnje župnišča je stvar toliko napredovala in se dokončala vsaj toliko, da sem se v novo župnišče že vselil. Kar dobro se počutim, posebno še, ko imam pralni stroj in tekočo vodo - hočem reči in-

Iz domovine izvem malo stvari, odkar je propadel Slovenec. Skoda, da je prenehal. Ali je res, da so otroci tega sveta pametnejši od otrok luči? V svetnih rečeh prav gotovo, kar se je v ‘demokratični’ Sloveniji že večkrat izkazalo.
Z gospodom Janezom Grilcem se vidim občasno. Je zlat človek in duhovnik in veliko pomaga. Hvala Bogu, da se njegovo zdravje zboljšuje. Pred letom dni mi je tožil o raznih nadlogah.
