XC Doma in po svetu - PREGLED NAJVAŽNEJŠIH DOGODKOV - Shultz in Ševardnadze rešila probleme v zvezi z raketno pogodbo — Zvezni senat bo verjetno zavlačeval z ratifikacijo ŽENEVA, Švi. Kabul, Afg. Zato velja: 1. Marija sodi k polnosti naše vere. Brez nje naša vera ni celotna, ni prava, je okrnjena. Brez nje nismo v popolnosti kristjani. Tega se zavedajo vzhodni in zahodni kristjani. 2. Ko Cerkev slavi Marijo, njene skrivnosti in obhaja njene Milwaukee, fVis. Franc Mejač — 70-Ietnik Prihodnji četrtek, 19. maja, bomo Triglavani v razred sred-njo-starejših upokojencev sprejeli še vedno delavnega bivšega večletnega predsednika društva Triglav, in sedanjega upravnika Parka, sedemdesetletnega rojaka Franca Mejača. Življenjski prazniki so vedno veselega značaja, velikokrat pa v to veselost kane neka moreča misel, polno trpljenja in nepopisne žalosti. Od leta 1961 društvo Triglav lastuje.zemlji-šče »Slovensko oazo« sredi Amerike, torej Triglavski park, katerega pridni člani in članice urejajo, preurejajo in krasijo z rožami. Zato korajžno in veselo naprej! Zavednemu Slovencu in katoličanu, bivšemu jugoslovanskemu rezervnemu oficirju, domobranskemu častniku, večkratnemu predsedniku in upravniku društva Triglav in ZSPB Tabor, rojaku Francu Mejaču iskreno čestitamo k njegovemu sedemdesetletnemu rojstnemu dnevu in plodnemu življenju. Kako tople so besede, ko slovensko dekle poreče slovenskemu fantu: Popelji me plesat... Pevci so Simonovemu spominu posvetili Schwabovo »Zdrava Marija« s čustveno podoživetim solopevom dr. Dominike Lango. Domači pevci so zaključili s pesmijo »Slovenska zemlja«. No, plesalci so se spet preoblekli. Veseli Slovenci pa so (dalje na str. 4| V blag in ljubeč spomin 26. OBLETNICE SMRTI OB 10. OBLETNICI SMRTI NAŠEGA ljubljenega brata Gostič M.D. le umrl 24. maja 1978 *allJioej: Brat in sestri 30. To pot je opravila prva, zato je prvakinja vere. 5. To pot bomo zmogli le z Marijo, z vero v njene skrivnosti, s pravo pobožnostjo do nje. Začetek te poti je Marijino leto. Stankota Rozmana v Zambiji in bo tja odposlan v kratkem. Družina Stankota in Angelce Blaž je po ge. Slavki Kosec darovala za prvoletno vzdrževalnino domačega bogoslovca kan. $350 (nekaj več kot Z.D. $250). »Misijonska obzorja« so nas dosegla, letnik 2, štev. Urednik M.O. Direktor v pokoju g. Vauti: »Kljub starosti so ga učenci ne le spoštovali, ampak ljubili. Ustavili so delo, prišli k Janezu, on pa: »Halo, fantje, bomo kaj zapeli?« In naša pe-(dalje na str. Vacation The American Home newspaper will be on vacation the last two weeks in June. We will resume publishing the week of July 4th. Earlier in this series it was emphasized that the Slovene American community as a whole is essentially on its own. We can get some assistance in a cultural sense from contacts with Slovenia and Slovene communities in Austria and Italy, but this can have an effect only if we maintain our own existence. To preserve a sense of identity, we need to have organizational expression of this. We must retain the numerous groups we now have, or at least as many of them as possible. The point here is that Slovene American organizations ought to focus primarily, if not exclusively, on helping the community as a whole, on helping each other first. Many of our organizations through all sorts of fundraising activities, from dances and picnics to bake sales, generate funds that they then donate to various charitable or community groups. I have the impression that in the last several years more and more of our organizations have been donating funds to charities that certainly are worthwhile, but in essence have nothing to do with our community. These are charities to which many of us contribute separately, as individuals. I would argue that specifically Slovene organizations, those which draw the bulk of their funds and support from the Slovene community, make every effort to be “charitable” to that community before they look farther afield. We need to take care of first things first, at least when we look at what groups we want to support. We have national homes, religious institutions, cultural groups, recreation centers, the Slovene Home for the Aged, individual actions to support persons or families that have been struck by misfortune. In exceptional cases, such as an earthquake or other natural disaster, we would no doubt join in gathering support for Slovenia. This is where we should concentrate our efforts as a community, helping our own needs first, rather than outside groups, however worthy of support they may be. Again, if we as a community don’t take care of first things first, no one will do it for us. And, too, if we ignore or shortchange ourselves, we will find before very long that we won’t have any kind of Slovene American community left. There is no wish here to offend anyone or any organization. Those who raise the money ought to be the ones to say how it will be distributed, which non-Slovene as well as Slovene American groups should be the beneficiaries. But I do argue that we ought in our various organizations as we discuss the merits of supporting this or that group keep in mind the thought that if our primary purpose isn’t to support each other, why bother calling ourselves and our organizations “Slovene American”? Happy Birthday to Jennie Vidmar of 6611 Edna Ave., who is celebrating her 90th birthday today, Friday, May 13th. And now we learn that Frank Strauss is confined at University Hospital (Hanna House) with a broken hip. We pray that all of your recoveries will be swift, and that you will be back with us soon. In the meantime, I am sure that a card from our readers will be appreciated by each. At our last meeting John Strancar, associated with the National Health Care Coalition, addressed us and inform- ed us that this group is seeking better health care for the senior citizens. By their growth in numbers, the senior citizens can be very influential in the voting booth. Strancar asked that we, as individuals, lend support to the coalition in its current campaign, by writing to our governmental officials. The campaign asks for better, more affordable health care for all of us. Together, we can win the fight for a strong health care system that will assure high quality care for all. Literature and mail-in cards were distributed, making it simple for all to voice their support. At our meeting, Thursday, May 19, we will have a speaker and presentation on cataracts. We invite you all to come. It should be of great interest to most. On Wednesday, May 4th, a bus load of us embarked on our first bus tour of the year. Our destination was the Akron area. Our first stop was a tour of and shopping at the Quaker Square center. The limited time was not enough to do it proper. Lunch was at the Cathedral of Tomorrow. The dining area is quite impressive, and the buffet well stocked with a variety of freshly prepared tasty items, ranging from soup to desserts. Again, time schedule did not allow for a tour of their religious display, etc. With appetites satisfied, we moved on to the Stan Hywet Estate. The tour of the mansion is very impressive and its history interesting. Again, too little time to appreciate it fully. We did not have time to visit their beautiful floral gardens. A brief look from afar, evoked a wish for time to leisurely walk through the gardens and enjoy the floral beauty. Alas, no time today, we must be on our way, back home. A short stop was made in Kent at Hanks for home made ice cream. The weather throughout the day was perfect. Only slight sprinkling during part of our ride home. It was a totally enjoyable day. Are you ready for our next tour? Be prepared to sign up at our May meeting on Thursday, May 19th. I must comment on the next two items. Ann Filipic’s birthday party on May 1st was a beautiful party and a tremendous success. Over 400 persons, all friends of Ann’s, came and enjoyed themselves. Ann was radiantly beautiful, and enjoying every moment as she circulated among her many friends. Sunday, May 15th is the day of the “Friends of the Slovenian National Home” brunch. It, too, promises to be an event to remember. Will you be there? Motor buses replaced the streetcar and many former paying passengers have since been disappointed by the change. The buses currently used are polluting the air with their exhaust; also, there is much less room and less seating than the uj old streetcars. ^ It seemed that our St. Clair Avenue streetcars always had the most passengers, but for some reason St. Clair Ave. streetcars were always the most out-dated and decrepit. When Edward Kovacic became the CTS-City of Cleveland liaison, it was only then that St. Clair began operating the new P.C.C. modern cars that were a great improvement over the old streetcars. Sadly, though, they were replaced after only a few postwar years of operation and the inferior motor buses were initiated on St. Clair and Superior lines and elsewhere. Many Clevelanders probably were not aware that the old Cleveland streetcars were made in Collinwood, at E. 140th and Deise Ave. The G. C. Kuhlman Car Company began producing the early one-door streetcars around early 1900s (see picture). In the 1910’s the streetcars were equipped with a front door, too, and boarding a streetcar was speeded up greatly. Many of our Slovenian pioneers worked at G.C. Kuhlman. The heyday of the Kuhlman streetcars, the 1930’s , streetcar fares were $1.25 for a weekly adult pass, 50d Civic Center (the former Euclid Shore Center School), at which details concerning the new “American Slovenian Nka Foundation” were presented and discussed. The ateeting was chaired by Cleveland radio personality Tony Petkovšek, Jr. and was attend-ed by 40-45 persons, perhaps a lew more. Also present for atuch of the meeting was new Euclid Mayor David Lynch, who gave the new organiza-’■ttn, which will be based in the l-'vic Center, his enthusiastic endorsement. The aim of the Polka Foundation is to preserve in photo-žfaphs, recordings, sheet niUsic, musical instruments and other means the record of Slovene American music, with {ntphasis on the development and evolution of the so-called Cleveland-style” polka. In 'l*6 future exhibits will be preyed and other programs will ’ organized. Acting Chairman Petkovšek er,1Phasized that the new orga-^ation is still in its formative I'age and so all the details of ,e Foundation’s specific acti-Vlties and scope have not been '^blished in final form. To 'ls point, for example, no news releases have yet been prepared. The new Foundation is interested in securing members not only in the Greater Cleveland area but throughout the United States. Individual memberships are available at $12.00 per person, with checks payable to the “American Slovenian Polka Foundation”. For more information, you can contact Tony’s Polka Village at 481-7512. Among the many well-known persons present at the meeting and better informed about the Foundation were: Alice Kuhar, Joseph Valencie, John Habat, Jeff Pecon, John Gerl, Florence Unetich, John Pestotnik, and Ken Tomsick. It was noted that the first public appearance of the Foundation will be in connection with a Senior Citizen’s program to be held at the Civic Center on May 21 and 22. It is expected an exhibit will be ready by that time. Once the Polka Foundation is more firmly established, it anticipates publishing a regular newsletter and issuing news releases about its activities. In the meantime, those interested have the chance to get in on the ground floor by joining now. Rudolph M. Radiation can be used at various levels to keep potatoes, onions and garlic from sprouting and berries from molding; to delay the ripening of fruit; to kill the micro-organisms that cause food poisoning or to stop them from reproducing; and to kill the insects that cause spoilage. Even though approval has been granted by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), you can be reasonably sure that you are not purchasing irradiated goods. The process of irradiation is different from microwaving, in which molecules are merely “stirred up” to create heat. Irradiation is powerful enough (in fact, about 250 million times as powerful as a chest X-ray) for individual molecules in the food to actually break open. When a whole food has been irradiated, it must be labeled with an international logo that resembles a flower within a circle. However, since foods that contain irradiated ingre- dients are not required to carry this label, there is no way to know for sure if your food has irradiated contents. Proponents of the treatment say that regular use of irradiation will result in fresh, contamination-free food: blueberry season would last longer; fish would taste ocean-fresh anywhere in the country; sausages would last for years; food poisoning would be nonexistent. More important, irradiation would help to fight world hunger, because large quantities of grain could be shipped to countries where people are starving, and grain could be stored without risk of spoilage or contamination. Opponents of irradiation argue that there are better and safer ways to preserve food and to prevent contamination. While irradiation arrests the growth of certain contaminating organisms, it may produce mutations that are even more dangerous. Opponents also point out that irradiation destroys certain vitamins and may create * * * * * * * * * i * * * You are cordially invited to KOLLANDER WORLD TRAVEL, INC.’s 65th Anniversary Celebration Sunday, May 22 from 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at the Slovenian Society Home 20713 Recher Ave., Euclid, Ohio (off East 200th Street — Lindbergh) A special musical variety program of ethnic talent will take place on stage. And since one of the major radioactive elements used for irradiation (cesium-137) is harvested from nuclear waste, some people fear the widespread transportation of nuclear waste and the dangers—to the workers and the communities—of opening more irradiation facilities. is irradiated food harmful to your health? The FDA says it is not. Military personnel, astronauts and hospital patients with immune disorders have eaten irradiated food for many years with no reported harmful side effects. Yet some studies found that animals that are fed with irradiated food had a higher incidence of chromosomal abnormalities in their white blood cells. The FDA disputes the validity of this study, although numerous scientists stand by the tin-dings. Even though the processing and consumption of irradiated food are considered to be safe by our government, many scientists and physicians argue to the contrary; in fact, legist' lion currently is before Congress that would suspend FDA approval of food irradiation until further studies are done. oik hv: uni Spi oil lout * * * ★ * ¥ Yugoslavia Extends Wage-Price Freeze; Government Facing No-Confidence Vote Wall Street Journal, May 12 Belgrade, Yugo. — Debt-ridden Yugoslavia has secured only half of an expected $500 million bridge loan from the Bank for International Settlements, forcing it to continue a partial wage-and-price freeze that had been due to end Sunday, officials said. Extension of the freeze, which has failed to stem rampant inflation but has helped spark unprecedented labor unrest, couldn’t have come at a worse time for Premier Branko Mikulic’s Communist government. It has been criticized for failing to tackle pressing social and economic problems and faces an attempt to unseat it this weekend in parliament, following the decision by the legislatures of the Yugoslav republics of Croatia and Slovenia to seek a vote of no confidence. If the move succeeds, it would be the first Yugoslav government since World War II to be forced to resign. A simple majority in both chambers is required to force resignation. Vice Premier Milos Milosavljevič, who Wednesday informed the Communist Party’s Central Committee of the decision by the BIS to limit the bridge loan, said international financial support was crucial to ending the freeze, imposed in November in an attempt to curb inflation running at a 170ff/o*annual rate.
