Vstati so morali ob 5:30 zjutraj, narediti postelje, nekaj so telovadili, potem pa v delavnico Med dolgimi odmori so izvajali sport, učili se trgovine, zemlje-pisja in jezikov. Dobivali so $7.00 na teden plače. Organizacija sama potom svojega članstva predpisuje in dela postave glede izplačil in druge podrobnosti poslovanja, ki niso v nasprotju z državnimi postavami. Vse podjetje zavarovalnih družb vodi eksekutivni odbor, in člane tega odbora zbirajo in postavljajo delničarji, dočim oni, ki so zavarovani, nimajo nobene besede. Vse to moramo pripoznati. V to so nam živ dokaz vrtne grede in okna priprostih kmečkih domov v starem kraju. Prekopali smo gredo, posejali cvetlice. To jaz grenko občutim, ko oče spi v grobu, a jaz nimam cvetlic, šele sedaj znam vse to ceniti, a je prepozno. "Kaj naj storimo sedaj ?" "In kaj bo sedaj ?" Cenjeni mi bratje in sestre! Dolžnost vaša je udeleževati se seje, saj naše seje so kratke. Nikar ne recite: "O, saj tajnik me pozna,, bo že on založil!" News Revelations and Inquiries By MICKEY Out of line-up: Due to an accident, Johnny Mah, hard hitting home run hitter of the Eastern Star ball team is out of the lineup, nursing a broken toe (his big one). With much interest, I learned from a witness , that on Sunday morning, a few weeks ago, John was late for church. He rushed to a friend's home and succeeded in borrowing a motorcycle. Johnny came tearing down E. 156th St. and not being able to make the turn into Holmes Ave., kept going across the street over the curb and into some big hedges. The bike was a wreck and Johnny woke up when an irritated landlady chased him off her premises with a broom. The doctor took a picture of John's toe and We hope KITAJČEVA PAPIGA ftftftffffffftffft Cherry je vzel zobotrebec iz ust v roke in ga zamišljeno ogledoval. "Pomagal vam bom. Niste li morda zadnjič zvečer na Mad-denovi farmi slišali, kako je nekdo klical: 'Pomagajte! Morilec! Proč samokres!' ali kaj podobnega?" "Nočem prikrivati: da, to sem slišal!" Bobu je glasno utripalo srce. "In potem— ali ste tudi kaj videli?" Starec je prikimal. "Celo prav mnogo, mladi gospod! Ker sem bil utrujen, sem then put it in a sling he gets well soon. P o m a gajte, pomagajte!' Prav, kakor ste rekli. . ." "No; in?" . ." "Kdo za božjo voljo? Kdo? Ali govorite o Martinu Thornu?" "Mislite tistega suhega pri-huljenca, tajnika? One — ni bil on! Govorim o njem ... O mogočnem gospodu, o samem P. J. Maddenu!" Osupel molk. "Dobri Bog!" je zaječal Bob. "Hočete reči, da Madden ... To je vendar nemogoče! Kako veste, da je bil to Madden? Ali ste čisto prepričani?" "Popolnoma! Saj ga vendar dobro poznam. Orjak rdečega obraza in redkih sivih las. Takrat v New Yorku . . .' Toda poštena kost sem in nimam ka>j prikrivati. To je moja zgodba — in je, Bog mi pomagaj, čista resnica!" Bob Eden je vstal, "človek božji, to je prekleto resna zadeva! Veste, kdo je Madden, kajne? Eden najveljavnejših mož Amerike. . ." Oj ti dobri Bog! Sedaj morate z nama v Eldorado. . ." "Nak ... Ne grem v nobeno mesto, dokler ni zares potreba. Kar sem videl, bom povedal vsakomur, ki me bo vprašal. Toda v Eldorado — ? Nak, mladi gospod! Ne bo nič!" "Vendar morate sami uvideti . . ." "Pojdite no! . ." "No vidite! Ste pač še začetnik, dragi gospod! Kaj pa pomeni moja beseda proti P. J. Maddenovi besedi, če nimate dru^ gih dokazov? Te morate šele iz tal izkopati!" "Morda imate prav!" "Seveda! Tam me lahko najdete. To je pameten predlog, kajne, gospodična?" Deklica je prikimala. "Najbrž." "Dobro — strinjam se, gospod Cherry. Po vaši izpovedi vidim čisto drugače; pustil vas bom pri miru, če bom le mogel." Starec se je s težavo dvignil. "Velja! Kdo? Tega še ne vemo. In kdo ga je? Danes sva dobila odgovor." (Dalje prihodnjič.) PLEASURE AND NOT BUSINESS BOOKED FOR NEXT MEETING Central Committee To Meet At S. N. H. On Holmes Ave. At 7 P. M. On Saturday After having kept their collective noses to the grindstone, for the past six months, the members of the Central Committee feel that they are entitled to something of a vacation, and to this end arrangements have been made where by the by-weekly meeting of the organization will be held at Rainbow's End, Kokomo Grove, Willoughby, O;, instead of SDZ headquarters, the usual meeting place. The committee will meet at the Slovenian Home, Holmes Ave., at 7 p. m., from where they will travel in a body to the Grove. Though much business is to be transacted, it is hoped that this early start will make it possible for them to enjoy something of the natural and culinar attractions of the meeting place. Following the adjournament, a winner roast with accompanying refreshments will be served. Arrangements have been made, whereby the more adventurous souls of the group can take advantage of Chagrin River's cooling waters, if they so desire. Eastern Stars diamond artists, leaders in the Interlodge B loop, will be out after the fourth straight victory Sunday morning when they tangle with the Rovers-Utopians at Novinc Field, E. 165th St. and St. Clair Ave. The game will get under way at 10 o'clock. The Stars have been the surprised dark horses of the loop to date, and seem well ort the way to the loop championship. However, they may strike a Tartar in the Utopians Sunday, and the boys will have to be up on their toes if they expect to keep their record unblemished. All members of the club and other SDZ English-conducted lodges are asked to be on hand to cheer the boys on to victory. MANY ENTRIES ON FILE FOR COMING S. D. Z. Well, folks, another week has passed which means another chance to talk a great deal about things of no importance. It seems as though the Eastern Star is usually in a fog. They still seem to have a very hazy idea as to the identity of the J. P. S. Although your correspondent sees all, hears all, and knows all, you must also remember, that he is only human. Give him another week and he will be able td tell you who the fairy is, that uses the pseudonym "Starlite." Miss Klemen, the author of This 'n That recently told the world at large, that your correspondent was none other than Joe Muzic. If she still thinks that this is so, she is welcome to the thought. Who is he then, you ask?—Only Yinchell knows. Speaking of Joe, by the way, reminds me of a recent conversation he had with a certain Elsie (a blond). On this occasion his vocabulary, peculiarly enough, seemed to be extremely limited. Between queer sounding smacks, he was heard to mutter over and over again, "Oh, honey, do you still love me?" The driver of that mysterious delivery truck has also found himself a companion with whom he has carried on similar conversations. "Even fighters have their weak moments," says "Pop-eye" Modic. Judging from his recent ravings and rantings, his present weak moment is a girl by the name of Tillie, a member of the Comets. Sh! Did you know that Martin Valetich Jr. is a Sunday school teacher? The Reverend Martie (who is a very modest chap), first declined to demonstrate the pole-vault at the coming SDZ Olympics. You are! Yinchell knows. only members of the Slovenian Mutual Benefit Association, but others as well. Singularly enough it is the young ladies who are evidencing the greatest enthusiasm for the coming event, and it is not at all improbable that one or two Stella Walsh's will be uncovered when the lassies toe the marks. Several lodges have already announced their intentions of sending full teams into the events and members have launched on intensive training programs for the field day. As was previously stated the Olympics will not be a strictly athletic affair, but the program calls for a number of non-competitive events, which will afford much entertainment for spectators and participants alike. Non-members, planning on entering any of the events, should fill out the entry blank, printed elsewhere on this page, and forward it to the SDZ News, 6117 St. Clair Ave., as soon as possible. By A. All lodge members are invited to attend. Baseball isn't hogging all of the spotlight out at Eastern Star way these days. Not since the SDZ Olympics have been announced. The Central Committee announces the recent acquisition of another group, Warrensville, No. 31, into their ample fold. This group is expected to be a very active one, due to their past record. It so happens that Warrensville No. 31 was originally a lodge composed of elderly members. The younger folks were, however, so extremely brilliant and energetic, that it wasn't long before they took over the handling 0f the lodge, and are at present doing a very creditable job. . The vision and foresight of this group in Warrensville can readily be proven by the interest elicited and the ready cooperation extended upon the receipt of a letter from the secretary of the Central Committee. The Central Committee was extended an invitation to attend one of their regular monthly meetings. This was done, and at the very next meeting of the Central Committee (July 1)> that group already had sent a representative Do you know that no admis-in the person of their well- sion or physical examination known and well-liked secretary, charges are made by SDZ up Mr. Frank Chesnik Jr. to the age of 30 years? The meeting, beginning at 8 p. m., will be conducted as an open forum, wherein all attending may suggest ideas and plans for the betterment of the association. Such proposed plans will be thoroughly discusssed at the meeting and it is expected that many good ideas for the promotion of interest and activity in the various lodges will be carried back by the officers attending the session. All members of the Central Committee are urgently requested by Frank Surtz, president, to attend the meeting. He further asks them to be there promptly at 8 o'clock, especially since this will be the first opportunity of the officers of the senior lodges have of getting acquainted with the leaders of the English-conducted groups. By TEENIE SAJOVEC Treasurer Eastern Stars Edward "Birchy" Kromar, who plays second base on the league-leading Eastern Stars baseball team, is also a new member of the Eastern Stars' crack pinochlers squad. To date we have 10 crack pinochlers (not kibitzers) for our coming tournament. Our secretary Frank "Doc" Gregoric is taking to pinochle very quickly, and we hope to have him ready for the tournament as much of our hopes are pinned on him. When the full team is organized, there will be plenty of surprises as to how our kibitzer can play. Stanley Koželj wasn't bad, he couldn't be, for he had to act as chauffeur. When Frank Gregorčič went to bed, he started to recall the day's events, but none seemed to please him more than the homeward trip from the Central Committee meeting. He laughed until he woke up his cousin who slept nearby. Upon being asked whether he was ill, Frank merely told him the story of the trip, and Eddie's war dance. Who else was there. Oh yes, Mickey forgot to crawl in his pajamas before going to bed. 1 The next time you go out, Stanley, and figure on taking girls home, fill up your gas tank. tXXXXXJXXXXXXXXXXXXXXIJXXXi Have you talked to your friend about joining SDZ yet? News 6117 St. Clair Ave. © Radio Interviews Two of the fight world's most renowned figures are Jack Kearns, former manager of Jack Dempsey, and Mickey Walker, holder of two titles and seeking the heavyweight crown at present, were being interviewed by a radio announcer in New York last Sunday evening. A few interesting points were brought out in the formal questioning of the two individuals. The announcer wanted to know what Kearns, in the Dempsey-Firpo go, was doing to his., protege's feet in between the first and second rounds after Dempsey had been knocked out of the ring in the initial beat by the Argentine Bull of the Pampas during their championship melee in New York City in September of 1921. Kearns replied that he was putting resin on the Manassa Mauler's shoes in order to prevent him from slipping and assure him of a firmer foothold on the canvas, as he had been slipping throughout the entire first chapter. He also informed the radio audience that he advised Jack to slug it out with Firpo and stand toe to toe with his worthy opponent. "The Argentinian was too dangerous to permit Dempsey a pot shot as he was doing in the disastrous first," was Kearn's version. This piece of philosophy worked, as the champion kayoed Firpo in the next canto. Dempsey received $470,000 and Firpo $100,000 for their skirmish. "Condition Aids," Walker The veteran fight pilot terminated the discussion saying that a fighter's life is not all "just a bowl of cherries." He reminded his listeners of the fact that out of an army of 100,000 fighters there are only eight champions. Mickey Walker was asked, How come that a fighter can retaliate strongly after a terrific beating in one round after , only one minute's rest? The Mick retaliated with, "to the fighter in good condition that minute's rest is like a month's vacation to the average man." The program will be divided into three section's, as follows: , "Kentucky Babe" and "Planinska" will be sung by-the men's chorus'; The mixed chorus will offer "O jesenske duge noči" and "The Farmer and His Girls." Following this a scene, "Ob potoku," will be presented by nine members of the fair sex, namely, Angeline Eisen hardt, Louise Zortz, Mary Skopin, Frances Jevec, Mary Pavlovic, Antonia Gulic, Martha Kumse, Mayme Kotnik and Frances Tomazic. This scene will portray the life of Slovenian peasant girls busily washing the family wash at the brook and merrily singing sway when suddenly—well, come and find out for yourself and see jusr how it all turns out. Last but not least will be the presentation of the ever-popular operetta, "Kovačev študent." A very interesting and comical musical play, depicting the life and welfare of Janes (Joseph Tomšič), son of Kovač Vlecimeh (Louis Seme) and Meta (Mary Polutnik) and a student in one of the leading universities, who, like so many other young boys, instead of making good of the opportunities offered him by his parents, squanders his time and his father's hard earned money by frequent ing the wine shops with three of his fellow students—Krok (Frank Posa-vec), Žejko (Joseph Brescak) and Mucek (Frank Tomazic). Naturally, Janez was always low on money and continually writing home to his parents for more. Finally one fine day, when Zan, the mailman (Frank Gorensek), delivered one of those "most welcome" letters, the Kovač, in a rage of fury, makes up his mind to go and see tor himself just what this son of his is doing. The words of his wife, pleading for their son, have no effect upon him. Upon arriving in the city he first calls at his fraternity house, and not finding him neither there nor a: the university, begins to scan the streets for that wonderful son of hiš. At this point, my, oh, my, what! It can't be possible. Indeed, just as was expected. Janez comes staggering from one of the wine shops. With a song on his lips, and betraying the results of too much drink. A perfect picture of poor management. Quite soon he is joined by his three buddies, who, in a similar state of mind, make "whoopee" until suddenly spied from the distance by Kovač himself—then—it certainly is a very interesting musical play, and therefore each and everyone is cordially invited to attend. The music for the operetta will be furnished by the newly organized orchestra Our Home, under the direction of our musical director, Mr. Louis Seme. The orchestra is composed of the following members: Hermina Zortz, piano; Pauline Svet-Strong, first violin; Josephine Eisenhardt, second violin; Jack Tomazic, accordion; John Tomsic, banjo; Frank Tomsic, French horn. After the program, dancing will be enjoyed. So you are again cordially invited to attend one of the biggest and best performances ;jiven by our singing club, Our Home. Don't forget the date—July 17. As E. By BILLY TOFANT Lee Fohl's Pennzoils retained their hold on first place in the Class A standings by walloping the Kuchta Drugs, 20 to 10, last Sunday at Penn-zoil Park. Ray Zorman with a double and two singles, Frank Krainz with three singles and a double, and Stanley Casper with three triples, a double and a single were the Pennzoil batting luminaries. Behind the six-hit pitching of Gibbons, Doik Novario's Quaker Sugars edged the McWilliams Surveyors, 2 to 1, in a well played A clash at Gordon Park. Pete Gallupe led the winners at bat. Johnny Gaski banged out a single, a double, a triple and a homer to lead the Brazis Bros, to a 9 to 1 triumph over the Naso Beauty Shoppes. ^organ's homer played a big part in the Norheast 'Merchants' 7 to 5 upset of the Frey Prosecutors. Three errors proved costly to the Haber Auto Wreckers as they were nosed out by the St. Gregorys, 8 to 7. Danny Pavlovic, Ray Fulton and Adam Berens hit well for the Wreckers. Heinie Laurich connected for two safeties, but the St. Benedicts were downed by the St. Elizabeths, 10 to 6, in a C encounter. The Laurentians suffered their second successive reverse of the season by dropping a 5 to 4 tilt to the St. Anthonys. Klun and Schuster were the losers' batting stars. Three hits by Frank Hrovat featured the Carson Undertakers' 8 to 2 win over the Merle Owens. Pitcher Zavad-ski of the Carsons held the enemy to five hits. The Kelly A. C. could solve Pitcher Pengel of the Zingale Fruit Markets for only three hits, so they suffered a 2 to 0 shutout for the Markets. Heinie Smith's work at bat enabled the Redpath Remedies to punch out a 13 to 7 victory over the Preifer Barbers. Sensational hitting by Babe Kobe stood out as Charley Saxe's Yankees annexed their eighth straight D tussle at the expense of the East Cleveland Merchants, 15 to 6.
