PIRC, Editors and Publishers Entered as second class matter January 5th, 1909, at the Post Office at Cleveland, Ohio, under the Act of March 3rd, 1879. Otrok si gotovo misli: zakaj to? Bog ve, kakšne načrte in pogoje so napravili s temi tujci? "AH so šli Tatari mimo?" "Da; sicer ne bi gorela moja hiša." "Ali je bila vojska ali 3amo manjši oddelek?" "Vojska. Saj so polja opnsto-šena, kakor daleč sega oko — " zapoveduje?"• Zakaj voda Oba je Kdo ji "Emir. krvava." "Ali je kan Feofar šel v Tomsk?" "Da." "Veš li, če so se Tatari polastili Kolivana?" "Ne, ker mesto še ne gori" "Hvala lepa, prijatelj! Morem li kaj storiti zate in za tvoje?" "Ničesar." "Na svidenje!" "Z Bogom!" DOUBLED MEMBERSHIP IN 1932 On the SVZ, Soap ^Bojc 117HEN the Essdeezee Election Campaign was first introduced, from all sides came the cry, "It can't be done—you can't get any new members' now!" We realize that times are not just the best and that, perhaps, it is now a little harder to procure new members for your organization, but to say that it is impossible is foolish. The Modern Crusaders, who are giving every indication of running away with the elections, are proving this. Determined to go out and make a splendid showing in the campaign, the members are leaving no stone unturned in their effort to double their membership during the six months period. So enthusiastic are they about the project that they even are making a house-to-house canvass so that not a single possible new member will be overlooked. And if the Modern Crusaders can do this, there seems to be no reason why the other seven English-conducted lodges can't come out of their slump and show some spirit. Just a little more honest-to-goodness willingness to work for your respective lodge is bound to reflect itself in favorable results. You can't get any place by sitting back and saying, "Well, I'll let George do the work for our lodge. He likes it." Perhaps he does, but we're sure that he' isn't very much in favor of doing it all himself. And with a little cooperation from the rest of the members, George is going out and do even more work than what he had been doing in the past. You remember the story of the bad apple in the barrel of good ones. Chances are that if live wire George is continually surrounded by other "dead timber" members, George will become a "dead timber" member himself, before he will change his fellow members into live wires. It always works out that way. AT THE MEETING of repres- entatives of the English-conducted lodges held on the eve of the Election Campaign, enthusiasm ran high and all speakers pledged the support of their respective lodges to any social or athletic project undertaken by a fellow organization. Tomorrow night we will have the opportunity of learning whether or not these words were spoken in vain. And like the affairs so char-* acteristic of the Young Men of old, tomorrow's party promises to be one of the best entertainment features of the year. The peppy Eddie Simms' quartet will take care of the musical end of the program, while the other features of the dance have been well taken care of by the active entertainment committee. Nothing has been left undone and the stage is set for a gala evening. The party will be in the nature of a reunion, too, what with all the old time athletic luminaries of the community staging a "get-to-gether" at the dance. Reports from these stars of other day's indicate that the majority of them will be on hand, from the opening of the doors until the final note from Eddie's accordion. Tickets are selling for only 35 cents and can be obtained from members of the club or at the box office on the night of the dance. ' All SDZ members are urged to show their fraternal spirit by being on hand and giving the Young Men a boost along the road which leads to bigger and better fraternal activities. As has been outlined before, this committee, made up of representatives of the eight English-conducted lodges, will serve as a clearing house of all individual lodge activities. Ideas for the conducting of meetings and stunts will be discussed, while individual problems of the lodges will be given every consideration in an attempt to reach a solution; an effort will be made to arrange dates for all lodge and intra-fraternal activities, besides outlining a board are to take place once a month and should be attended by every lodge officer and other members actively interested in the work. By JOE MUZIC Boy! Oh boy! Oh boy! Here we are starting the summer season with an enormous outing. Gee, but that's great, and has the entertainment committee planned it big? I'll say it did. Look, here are just a few of the outstanding points of this great affair. But first I'd better tell you where this thing is to be held. The entertainment committee has planned that this event be held at Petkovsek's farm, about 32 miles south east of here. And is that place swell? Boy! I'll say it it! It has everything from a woods to the little crabs in the creek which winds its way so gracefully in and out of the woodland. 1 could write and write about this place and still I couldn't say enough about it's beauty and its peaceful atmosphere. Now, as I was going to say before, the committee has planned an affair that you won't forget so easily. It has planned events in which everyone will participate, regardless of their likes or dislikes. They have also made arrangements for the refreshments which shall be served at this event of events. So much for the coming outing at this time, but you'll hear more about it later. You have probably heard about the April meeting, true this meeting is to be important, but that isn't the sole reason we are asking the members to attend. There is a bigger reason for this request and that is that all the members get acquainted with the lodge and its activities. We are making special efforts that the members give the officers a chance to reason out why it's necessary to attend all the meetings. 'Oman's office, she occupies a desk at a night school. Barbara Stanwyck and Richard Dix frequently lure her to the theater, and for some reason or another, she did enjoy "Sob Sister." During the winter months she torments her family by sounding a ukelele and singing, "Smile, Darn You, Smile!" She is the organizer of the Modern Crusaders and after holding office for a year, she decided that she could be of more assistance to the lodge as an ordinary member. In spite of her mother's mandates she has never learned bow to cook, but she has some splendid alibis for the petty crime. She seldom makes new clothes, yet she delights in remodeling old frocks, making them look like the latest, next minute creations. If her gentleman friend will say it with lilies, she will surely reply with "yes," becausc they are her favorites. She would like to visit Europe now during her youth when she possesses-vitality and energy, and she would explore America during her reclining senile years. The man who will lead her to the altar must be her superior in intelligence; he must be a good sport ajid successful in society, and above all he must have a great deal of will power. Some day she is going to dor? boy's clothing and hitch-hike somewhere, and call it an ideal vacation. There was a time when she was a hopeless bookworm and all of the "ologies" were her victims. At present, however, she is most delighted if she can talk with people even if it is about nothing. When her friends wish to remember her they usually present her with jewelry. She likes pink and blue and she never refuses to dance. This, she believes, will be one of her happiest years because the Modern Crusaders are doing, or planning to do big things; she will receive her sheepskin and she hopes to win a contest or two. The Girls Athletic Club and St. Mary's Young Ladies' Sodality also claim her for a member. She is not on laughing terms with Dr. James W. Mally, bet-cause he won a prize Chow dog recently, which she wanted to own herself. Collinwood calls her its leading ticket vendor. She buys a new season coat every two years, and she digests Cosmopolitan. Her three brothers and one sister proudly refer to her as the big sister, and the family supplies her with food and lodging when she drops in orf them at their home on Grove-wood Ave. '»»»imnmitm SDZ CONTRIBUTORS In submitting contributions t° the American Home Junior, please consider the following rules and regulations: 1. Grdina Says Just We With conditions as they are, and men and institutions crumbling under the Pressure, we recall the words of Car-lyle: "The world being saved will not save Us! nor the world's being lost, destroy us. We should look INTERFRAT AND INTERLODGE TO FEAST TONIGHT Sokols to Be Presented With Trophies for Winning-Third Title to ourselves." Thus it is that ,the power of making or breaking lies not in the world outside us, but rather within ourselves. Just we are responsible for our own future. A prominent business authority was comparing a number of different businesses in the same industry. In predicting which one would make •he best showing in the next ten years, he surprised all by mentioning a firm whose recent path has been exceedingly rough. When his attention was called to the fact that there were several other firms who were making a greater amount of money at the moment, he pointed tc fhe firm's past history and showed that no less than ten times had they suffered blows which appeared fatal at the time, but the company's marvelous recuperative powers always carried then? through with a whole skin. The phrase recuperative power strikes the keynote of today's conditions. Just take time out and look around you and you'll find many notable examples of this. A-certain business man as late as 1929 thought that he had enough money to keep him and his family the rest of h's days. He had practically retired and was doing little more than contributing his name to a thriving business. Then came the crash and with it ^ent all of his possessions. Today he >s working every bit as hard as he did some twenty-five years ago. . And no) only is he keeping body and soul together, but he is doing even better work than he ever did, and is looking younger! This scrivener's attention has been called to a couple who-were living a of utmost ease. .They took their bump with a shrug of the shoulders; started all over again, and in a little apartment are enjoying more real happiness than all their wealth could ever bring them. It is a common fact that all of us have, underneath our average store of strength and courage, a reservoir which >s tapped only by emergencies—a "second wind." Undoubtedly yolu have already surprised yourself with your Unsuspected capacity to do more than Nvhat you imagined yourself capable ol doing. The general consensus of opinion is that the crisis of the depression has already passed and that we are on the '°ng, tough road to recovery. Just Whether we arc or not can not be definitely said. But regardless of whether the bottom of the pit has already been reached, one thing we can be certain of; to the strong of heart and back, the folks with recuperative powers, the men and women with "sccond winds," will Bo the spoils of the future. We alone cast our own verdict. "Just Wc" are the judges. Let's "make" our selves! The bridal pair and the elder Gorniks received the guests. Southern palms, mural trellises and flowers, and varied streamers of dim lights were attractively arranged in the frontmost room of the business suite, which was used for dancing. The association, composed of neighborhood business men who are interested in the successful promotion of their business, has likewise established an enviable reputation as a sponsor of social affairs. Annually, the formal banquet is the most pretentious affair of any on their calendar and for the years has been one of the highlights of the community's entertainments. The reputation acquired through the success of these past banquets will be sufficient to attract a crowd which should tax the capacity of the inn, especially since the program outlined by the entertainment committee provides for more features than ever listed at any previous affair. In keeping with the current conditions, the price per plate will be only $1.50 and dinner will begin promptly at 6 o'clock. Dancing to the music of Hoyer's ensemble will complete the program. st. paui^ parise to hold annual bazar Throwing the doors of their beautiful stcre open to an admiring public, Slap-nik & Sons, florists, held an official opening of their new place of business, 6102 St. Clair Ave., Tuesday evening and Wednesday. What with depression and so forth. * * V Aphrodite and I are almost on speaking terms. Of course, we haven't known each other very long, but we're getting along as well as can be expected. Now and then I have to get a little rough and tough with her, but on the whole we get along pretty well. And does she have a temper! Why, the other morning she just about kicked out a lung for me. And all because I got a little unhappy with her. Accused her of being cold and she resented it. She resents a lot of things, but I'm learning how to please her. These temperamental Fords have to be won over with honeyed words, you know. And Aphrodite is very much a Ford; vintage of 1924. Also whoops, my deah. * * * She's old and spavined, but there's life in the old girl yet. Yes, indeed. Also and how. The other morning I woke her up before breakfast and I learned, much to my sorrow, that I should never do that again. She's old, but she's got young ideas. Figures that if I want breakfast I should get it myself. Smiling my best good morning smile, I politely tipped my cap and told her that we were going places. Sho didn't say anything, but I could tell from her looks that she .wasn't exactly in love with the idea. Ordinarily I wouldn't tell you such intimate secrets of her life, but this column has to be filled and the copy is late as it is: She was out late the night before. Out late, and that morning-after feeling is never conducive to good humor. Of course, 1 wouldn't know that myself, but that's what somebody told me. Anyhow, I went through the "switch on, contact" rigamarole business, and started to spin. She wasn't feeling very spinny that morning. She bucked and ripped and snorted, but she would not run. Or even walk. Temperamental. So 1 spun some more. It wasn't long before I had two blisters on my hand and one very exasperated temper. I spun and mumbled dire threats. Then I tried pleading, with no results. I tempted her with promises of an extra helping of Ethyl. Nothing , doing. Through all my pleading, threats and cajoling she continued to stare at me coldly. Then I got mad. If you're going to act that way about it, all right, but don't come whimpering back to me when you get hungry. Boy, did that wake her up! She let out a roar and started after me. Yes, sir, Aphrodite was very unhappy. I tried to hold her back, but she kept pushing me down the street. Maybe she thought I wanted to play. And before breakfast, mind you. Again I had to plyad with her. 1 recall wild promises about gailons and gallons of Ethyl and a pension in her old age. Again nothing doing. Bound and determined to teach me a lesson, she kept pushing me backward down the street. Because the street is pretty long and because I have a little pride left I let her have her way. Anyway, I was tired of holdiu« her back. With a joyous snort she rattled down the street. For a moment I was tempted to let hei go along until she smashed her fool head against a tree, but my pity overcame any resentment I might have held against her. Pictures of her death throes and my subsequent sorrow over her demise flashed through my mind. It was loo much. Gentle soul that 1 am, i couldn't bear to see her suffer. Half way down the block I caught up with her and <:allcd a halt to her mad flight. Mt iz * Everything is lovely now. Aphr-.-dite has seen the evil of her ways and has solemnly promised to be good. But I am inclined to doubt that. As late as last night she went on another party. Her behavior this morning, however, was ladylike, but 1 am nevertheless keeping my weather eye peeled for any sign of distemper. We're getting along just swell, now. But on the morrow, quien sabe? You can never tell about " these temperamental ladies. Sweet as sugar tonight, sour as lemons tomorrow. However, 1 hope for the best. After all, she's a pretty good Ford. Not much on looks, but pretty long on serviec. She takes me there and brings me back, does Aphrodite. Who cuuld ask for l^imMUmilUIMIIUinHIIHHUHIIIIIIIHIHIilHIIillllllllHIiiiiliimillllilllllllilimilllUI? .mo«.* t ... At, Home Wednesday, April 20, Cleveland baseball followers will once more trek to E. (iOth St. and Lexington Ave. to witness the local nine open the 1932 American League pennant scramble against the Detroit Tigers. This year's aggregation will be much the same as the one that started and finished the 1931 campaign. The only alteration will be the shortstop post, where Eddie Montague will cavort in place of some four or five other choices. Billy Evans, the club's business manager, purchased the veteran Joe Boley from the champion Athletics during the past winter trade season and would have no shortstop worries now if Commissioner Lan-dis had not nullified the deal because of some intricate stipulations. The judge claimed that the player (Boley) was not sufficiently protected in so far as the deal went and so declared it unjustifiable, forcing Boley to remain with Connie Mack's outfit. The remaining eight positions are pretty well filled with "youngsters" who now have another major league year under their belts. Luke Sewell, catcher, is the oldest regular on the team, but he still can be considered an ace backstop. The way Eddie Morgan has been performing around first base has given him the edge over young Connatser, as the latter is far behind the collegian in the art of manufacturing base hits. johnny Hodapp is just rounding into shape and will probably see more action around the keystone sack than any of his rivals. Peckinpaugh's third base problem has been solved since the acquisition of Willie Kamni, former Chicago star, last year. Kamm is one of the best third sackers in the history of the game and takes a back seat for none. Third or Better The outfield will be taken care of by Earl Averill, Joe Vosmik and Dick Porter, a trio of stars that are hard to beat. The Indians have the best outfield in the circuit, not excluding the Athletic or Yankee trio. Averill, Vosmik and Porter combined a batting average last year that no other three outfielders on any one team could come close to. Among the starting hurlers are Wes Ferrell, Willis Hudlin, "Sarge" Con-nally, Mel Harder and Oral Hildebrand. This array of pitchers stacks up with the best in the league and will carry the Indians far in the flag chase. According to past records and the present lineup, the Redskins should finish in third place, with a good chance of edging out the Yankees and taking the runner-up post. Have Good Year The Pioneer Lodge members can well be proud of their record in local sports activities during the past year. Last October the Pioneer inuoor team nosed out the Orels in a set of post-season games to win the Interlodge baseball toga. Last Friday the same lads captured the basketball crown to give the Pioneers their second Interlodge trophy. Only in the bowling department have they not fared so well. But as they are not .the type to lay idle and lose consistently, next season will likely find them near the leaders in the bowling loop. -o- RATS ISSUE CHALLENGE SOKOLS REPE AT IN INTERFRAT LEAGUE Pioneers Win Second Straight to Capture Interlodge Championship THIRD TIME LASSIES COP LOOP- TITLE Ann Gasparec Leads Gymnasts to Third Consecutive Championship osieckulso stars BUKOVNIK STUDIOS TAKE SPECHS LAST FRIDAY 21 TO 15 Now that the baseball season has been officially ushered in, challenges from one nine to another rent the air. Silver Masks in Poor Form; Completely Outplayed By Sokols By BILLY TOFANT Winding up the 1931-32 Interfrat basketball campaign in a brilliant if not sensational display of offensive strength that had lain dormant throughout the regular playing season, the Sokols copped this year's classic by whipping the Silver Masks into thorough submission by a 15 to 12 score last Monday night at the St. Clair Bathhouse. Exactly 520 cash customers, no more, no less, surged through the turnstiles to witness the Gymnasts, for the third successive time, capture the cup emblematic of the loop championship. Previous to last Monday's game each club had annexed one victory in the titular series. The Sokols took the first on March 30 to the tune of 13 to 11. Last Friday night the Masks, led by Osiecki, evened matters up by copping a 21 to 19 overtime tilt from the new champions. Soon after the opening whistle Vic Zaletel's charges hopped right into the lead, which they never relinquished, when Fran Klopec, stellar Sokol, guard, whose offensive play was one of the bright spots of the series, sent a double-decker whistling through the net. The Red and White rapid fire passwork and hustling completely obfuscated the Masks, and when the half-time gun went off they laid claim to a 12 to 8 margin. However, the Mystery Girls' defense tightened up in the final half and the Sokols were able to tally only three points. It was in this half that "Whitey" Doljack's futile, but nevertheless spectacular, tries for the hoop sent the onlookers into paroxysms of intermingled cheers and boos. The downfall of the. Masks can largely be attributed to their inaccuracy from the charity stripe. They failed to make good at least five foul shots, which, had they been potted, would have made the issue much closer. Congratulations, Champs Ann Gasparec, southpaw guard, starred for the newly crowned rulers by ringing up five points. Fran Slapar, speedy forward, and Ktishlan came next with three apiece. But the race is not over yet, as the George Washingtons, defending champions, still have a mathematical chance of finishing in first place. In order to be assured of at least a tie, the Spartans must take one game from the S. Y. M. C. Meanwhile the Tree Choppers must cop all three from the K. S. K. J. quint. Although the Scheduled to Go 8 Rounds at West Side Arena Wednesday April 20 Probably the quickest way to get a heated controversy a-going is to approach a fight-minded group of fans and put to them this query: "Which of the two Simms brothers is the better fighter?" The answer to the above interrogation is purely a matter of conjecture and we ourselves will not risk going out on a limb and commit ourselves on our status of the question. Each has his fine points, and bad ones, too, witli plenty of room for improvement for either one. Eddie Simms, younger member of the fighting Simms' stock, gets a chance to write his own answer to the issue when he meets Gene Stanton, husky Italian, in a six-round tussle at the Equestrium next Wednesday night. The former bank clerk is being regarded by many as a yardstick by which they can pass judgment on the Simms lads. Brother Frankie, now sojourning on the West Coast, took five rounds to plant his old "Destroyer" on Stanton's horn and deposit him in the resin for a kayo. Good Record for Gene Eddie, at the rate he has Been traversing the pugilistic highway of late, should not take that long to turn the trick. That is, if he has overcomk tint tendency to crouch and walk in with his hands down. While he isn't any better than a fourth-rater at best, Stanton may be able to do the right thing at the proper time and it'll be curtains for Eddie. But that is not likely to happen. Stanton's chief claims to fame are victories over Frankie Wine and Ern-mett Rocco. During his career he has included such names as Joe Sekyra, Tiny Powell, Marty Gallagher, Napoleon Jack Dorval, Charley Retzlal'f, Harold Scarney and Tiny Diebolt among his adversaries. On Nov. 30 of 1931 he dropped a 10-round decision to Chet Shandel, who,'incidentally, is listed on Eddie's kayo list. Simms' last victim was K. O. Christ-ner of Akron, whom he decisioned in a six-round go at the West Side arena some three weeks ago. Billy Hočevar paved the way for a clean sweep as he collected 215, 158 and 244 games, the latter score being high for the day and as a result wins for him the weekly suit cleaning prize. Johnny Milavec peeled off the only other 200 score of the tilt as he garnered a 203 in the middle contest. The Sokols surprised the Betsy Ross five as they captured the series from the third-place outfit. Sandwiching a 918 between two 800 scores, the Flag-makers avoided a shutout. Joe Kogoy's 545 was high for the winners, but this was topped by Baraga's 594 total. Continuing their lethargic streak, the S. Y. M. C. rolled a pair of 700 games and an 855 to win two from the last-place Clairwoods. A 591 series by Julius Bokar was the high mark of the skirmish. Joey Prosek had an auspicious start with a big 230, but he faltered in the next two games, to end up with a 569 grand total. They beat the Loyalites, 26 to 19, in the first setto and won the next tilt 21 to 15, making it two in a row. The first half ended 16 to 10 in favor of the Pioneers. During this time there was good passwork by both sides, with each team getting its share of points. In the second half more attention was paid to the defensive angle of the game, and the Pioneers were held to one field goal and a foul, while the Loyalites were tallying only two markers throughout the entire third quarter. The Loyalites outscored their adversaries in the final canto 3 to 2, but could not wipe out the early lead established by their foes. Sportsmanship Spretnak was the star of the fracas as he tallied five baskets and a foul for a total of 11 points. Danny Pavlovich, also of the Pioneers, played a good floor game along with chalking up four points. The Loyalites were paced by Kalin's five markers and Frank Ku-hel's all around play. In the last chapter the Pioneers displayed a bit of sportsmanship that proved that they were well deserving of the title "Champs." With the score close and the battle hot, Richman, Loy-alite guard, committed his fourth personal foul. According to all rules and regulations, he was automatically expelled from the game, and as they had no more substitutes' they would be forced to play with only four players. Being sportsmen through and through, the Pioneers permitted Richman to stay and complete the game, which is indeed a credit to the new champions. A record crowd of over 700 people attended the contest. SUNDAY NITE Dance in Both Halls Banquet Downstairs Brooks at Walter Taylor's West Side-arena will determine who can logically be called upon to challenge Jack December, present ruler of the city's crop of welters. Bojack in his last start at the Equestrium two weeks ago copped the nod over rugged Eddie Latko. Brooks, who relies almost entirely upon jabs and infighting to do his damage, punched out a sixi-round .win over Frankie Bauer, Euclid Village wind mill last Friday. Bojack is counting strongly upon his hard left jabs and potent right hand smashes to gain him the decision ovet Brooks and a bout with December. He should be able to cope with Brooks easily enough, but nevertheless it will be a mighty interesting battle to watch Joey Boldin, former Slovenian Golden Gloves champion in the 118-pound class, returns to the squared circle after a lengthy layoff to face Joey Forchione of Canton. They are slated for six rounds.
