Slovenian Musical Cultural Performance at St. Mary’s
Nearly 300 persons were in attendance for an evening of music, poetry and literature at St. Mary’s (Collinwood) Church on Friday, Feb. 24. Local musicians performed a wide array of music from classical composers Schroeder, Pachelbel, Beethoven, Mozart and Bach, to contemporary artists such as Graham Nash, James Taylor and Elton John.
Kati Dolinar opened the evening by reading “Zdravljica” (A Toast). This famous poem by
France Prešeren was written in 1844 and part of it has been Slovenia’s national anthem since Sept. 27, 1989. Consul General Zvone Žigon selected a diverse group of authors for his recitations, which included Ivan Zorman, Simon Gregorčič, Nejc Zaplotnik and Lojze Bajc.
Following the concert guests were invited to the Lausche Atrium Room for a spirited Slovenian style reception with dessert and refreshments.

The Question is: Are you a ‘Slovene’ or Slovenian’?
It has long been apparent there are two schools of thought about the pronunciation of the English name given to those people who come from Slovenia. Is it correct to call him or her a Slovenian or a Slovene.
Let us consider the native pronunciation of the name of the country and its inhabitants. One pronounces the words Sloveniya, not Sloviniya. Furthermore, the inhabitants refer to themselves as Slovenci not Slovinci. When referring to the Slovenian language, the term is slovenski jezik not slovinski jezik.
Linguists recommend that the use of any names be as close as possible to the original version. Following this suggestion, it would be logical, some might even say respectful, to pronounce the word Slovenia and its derivatives as closely as possible as Pronounced by natives of Slovenia, ie, Slovenia and e Slovenian people, hankfully in Australia the
problem of correct pronunciation of Slovenia and its derivatives is not so great. Although even here there seems to be some disagreement. Some would cite the Oxford Dictionary as providing the definite pronunciation of the name of the people who come from Slovenia. However, one should bear in mind when and who made the entry into the dictionary. Does tradition necessarily make something correct? I admit that such notable reference books are on the side of the anglicized version of the names and this is what I am arguing against. The name has been anglicized and I think it is wrong for us to allow it.
“Veliki Angleško-slovar” (English-Slovene Dictionary) gives both versions: Slovenian and Slovene. However, unfortunately, it instructs us also to pronounce the ‘e’ as an ‘i’ in both cases. This is what I claim is wrong. If only the name Slovenian was used, it
is more likely the ‘e’ would remain an ‘e.’
There is speculation as to how the misguided tradition came about. One very credible theory which was put forward by the late Dr. Stanislav Frank, a Slovenian language expert in Adele. Dr. Frank claimed the use came into practice after the First World War as a combined result of the fact that the French language was the universal diplomatic language and the French name for the country of Slovenia is Slovenie, and the second fact, that France was instrumental in forming Yugoslavia that was referred to as the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. It is not improbably that the term Slovene then found its way into the English language. Does it make it correct?
A similar second theory is one that many of you will relate to. Students in Europe learning English as a second language were simply told that an ‘e’ in English is al-
ways pronounced ‘i.’ Practical experience tells us that in fact this is not the case. Rules for pronunciation of the English language are irregular and complex to say the least. Generally speaking, pronunciation is determined by convention and it seems it can vary from place to place.
What abut the names of other countries? Let us take a look at how most other adjectives have been formed from names of some countries ending in ‘a.’ The format looks very standard and simple. For example, Austria - Austrian; Bulgaria - Bulgarian; Serbia - Serbians; Slovakia - Slovakians; Romania - Romanians. Should we allow logic to prevail? How about Slovenia - Slovenian?
It might also be worth considering how other nationalities neighboring Slovenia refer to the people who come from it. The Germans Slovenien and Slovenen; not Slovinian or Slovinen; The
Italians say Slovenia and Sloveni and Slovenia and Slovini. Could English follow this pattern?
A further and very solid argument is that we should follow the example of the Chinese and other nations and decide for ourselves how the name of our country and our name is pronounced. In the Western world, tradition called for the capital of China to be called Peking. The Chinese took it upon themselves to inform us of the correct pronunciation. Today, the pronunciation for the capital of China is universally accepted as being Beijing. What about Saigon and any number of examples one could quote.
Perhaps the final word should be that of Dr. Edi Gobetz from the Slovenian Research Center of America who has long argued to the proper use of the term Slovenian. He wrote the following in the 1SLOVENIA Weekly” publication: It was

Fun with the computer

I spent a few days in Niagara Falls, Canada this past week. One day was on our lap top computer; it just blew my mind. I also found out that I will be spending a few more days on my lap top computer in Boston, Mass. That one is for the dumbest in our region, of which I am one of two.
On my home computer, I do not have to know as much as I do on my lap top, which may explain why I am more relaxed at home and type a column for American Home. It is Sunday afternoon, and Therese and I just came home from a matinee movie. There was a message on our phone to check out our e-mail. My daughters and granddaughter had been out checking wedding dresses, and pictures of them were in my e-mail. I brought the pictures up just like a pro. Monica looked beautiful in her wedding dress, and the bridesmaids dresses she was modeling in full color.
Last night we had great fun on this very computer, as our family celebrated our grandson’s 13th birthday. The older kids were assembled in
my office, sending out a new e-mail to their sisters in Texas and North Carolina. It is called “a monk-e-mail fur you.” It comes with three types of monkeys, and all sorts of hair-dos, accents and locations. I found it hilarious, and have sent a few out today.
See how dangerous I am when I get hooked on something? These computers are most helpful and astounding when their gears mesh with the gears of my brain, which is a computer I’ve had since birth. Why the two can’t get along is beyond me. I see my very young grandchildren manipulate computers like I am able to do with a pencil hnd paper. It could be frustrating, but there is so much in life for me that I can shut the computer down and get involved in a part of life that I am able to handle with ease, such as eating delicious food, walking or just plain goofing off.
I was bom before computers and they’ll be here long after I’m gone. You know, to be honest, I’ll not miss them. In fact with them gone from my daily life, it will be heaven, for eternity.

I read in the papers on Monday morning that one of the movies I liked won an Academy Award. It’s probably not any of the films you are thinking about.
I was totally surprised during last September’s “Baraga Days” weekend in Cleveland when three people approached me and said they went and saw a movie I had recommended in this column, “American Treasure.” They agreed it was a very exciting and enjoyable film to watch. But they also asked for another recommendation. Unfortunately, at the time I had none.
Usually during Christmas vacation in Fort Lauderdale, Madeline and I, and our son, James, watch several movies during the holiday week. We sometimes pick out CDs at Blockbuster, or watch a film in a theater, or view something James has recorded on his TiVo from television.
One evening, after James and I had made our selections at Blockbusters, Madeline brought forth a movie she said she would like to watch called “March of the Penguins.” James and I
didn’t think much of it, but rented it anyhow. It was put on the “back burner” and was the last movie we watched before it was time for us to depart back to the cold, cold north. The “March of the Penguins” is not any action flick, nor a mystery, and it didn’t have any famous actors in it. It was a picture showing the life of penguins in the Antarctic.
Dull, you say. Well, my son and I, and Madeline watched in fascination the story of the penguins and was amazed by the account, and the wonderful cinema photography. All I can say is it was a delight to watch, and very interesting. It won an Academy Award for “Best Documentary Feature.” Those who watched it will agree it was most deserving of the honor.
As for the rest of the Academy Award winners, what can I say? A couple of weeks ago we saw “Firewall” with Harrison Ford. There were five of us in the Lake theater in Euclid. I guess “different strokes for different folks” applies. It won’t win any motion picture honors, but we were entertained and the popcorn was good; no butter thank you as we are watching our cholesterol.

The Club of Associations of the Slovenian National Home are serving Fish Dinners every Friday in Lent including Good Friday. This takes place in the Club Room, 6409 St. Clair Ave. (rear).
Beside the Fish Dinners, the menu also includes Combo Dinners (Fish and Shrimp), and Pierogi Dinners.

however, only in November, 1995 that we heard another very interesting and witty observation on this topic as related by Mrs. Genevieve ‘Gene’ Drobnič. Her late father Frank Jaksič, like herself a noted Slovenian American civil leader, put it this way, “When residents of Virginia will no longer be called Virginians, but Virgins, then and only then, I would be willing to call our people Slovenes rather than Slovenians.”

Singing Society Zarja Concert Features Courtroom Comedy
Zarja’s Spring Fling this year is titled, “And Justice for All.”
As you might guess, the skit is based on our Justice System of Courts. Therefore, all the action will occur in a court room setting. Ed Oza-nich, author of the skit, has gone back into previous years performances to see what has happened to all the characters.
The results are very interesting: NACE, the Tavern Owner, is suing Doctor ZAUBA, for cheating him out of his money and accordion. NADIA is suing to divorce BORIS for being so cheap. ROZALJA is suing RUDI for infidelity. ZENA is suing ZOVANIN, etc., etc. All these cases are on the
docket, and as each is heard, the judge, JANEZ FERS-MAGA, will rule.
The musical portion of the skit, under the direction of Doug Elersich, will be performed in both Slovenian and English.
The activities, on Saturday, April 29 at the Slovenian Society Home on Recher Ave., in Euclid, Ohio, start with dinner being served in the lower hall from 5 — 6:30 p.m. the performance will begin at 7 p.m., followed by dancing to the Jeff Pecon Orchestra.

Be Patient with Medicare Part D

Medicare part D Prescription Plan sounds like an easy fix to such a big problem for seniors. There is so much information out there that it’s hard to keep it all straight. But my parents raised me to riever give up, work and study hard and be patient. With Medicare Part D, I have to.
I’d like to share a few thoughts with you when dealing with Part D. Don’t get me wrong, the people I have signed up into this plan are definitely saving money!
I have done my research on each and every person and I make sure the plan works for their particular situation. I also appreciate all my wonderful clients and friends for being so patient when I explain the program.
Medicare Part D has been all over the news, basically because of all the confusion about the plan. If you can wait a bit, the news will get better. Things are slowly starting to make more sense.
I have personally sat on hold on the phone for HOURS, since November, 2005 to resolve issues with Part D. In the beginning, everyone had different answers, but it has gotten a lot better since then.
It was overwhelming to everyone involved. I have heard people describe what they are going through as “an in
tensified day after Thanksgiving sale,” and all the sales clerks were new hires. What a mess.
The bottom line is, it is new and the kinks are being worked out with time and experience. The last few people I have helped actually got processed quickly and without a hitch. One case I resolved without me having to make a call for help. Amazing.
The number one complaint from clients is that “it’s too confusing.” The main reason is probably because everyone is getting materials from probably 40 different companies. The material comes through the mail, television and even the mall.
My advice to you on making the BEST choice is:
1.	- Keep the literature that your supplemental Medicare Policy or Retirees Plan has sent you.
2.	- Keep a couple picks of literature from well known Insurance Companies.
3.	- Read over briefly what is covered to understand how the plans work.
4.	- Call me for a no obligation meeting, so I can explain the Plan in detail. I am happy to advise you on your particular situation.
5.	- Feel free to invite your friends, neighbors and family members as they may help you to understand the Plan and learn more for themselves.
6.	- Take the time to write
down your prescriptions with the dosages and strengths on a sheet of paper. If you are prepared, it makes it much easier for me to look up your prescriptions.
I advise my clients that they should purchase a Plan for now, and I will keep them informed if better plans should come along. Please don’t wait until May to sign up as this may make it ever more overwhelming for you.
I’ve learned that every single person has a different scenario. It may sound illogical but it is so true. A person taking two drugs before Medicare Part D can possibly save less than someone who may be taking seven. More unbelievable is the person taking the seven can in some instances end up paying less than the person taking only two with Part D. I have saved some of my clients over $400 a month with my research.
It’s difficult to make complete sense out of the many different options, plans, tiers and lists. I can, however, do as my parents have always insisted. That is to be patient, stick with it and do the best I can.

Barbara Hočevar, Lt. Kalkas Engaged
Mr. and Mrs. John Hočevar of Chardon, Ohio, announce the engagement of their daughter Barbara Marie Hočevar to Lt.j.g. Nicholas Kalkas, son of Mr. and Mrs. George N. Kalkas of Arlington Heights, Illinois. A May wedding is planned in San Diego, California.
Barbara, a Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin Academy (Chardon, Ohio) graduate, received a bachelor of science degree in nutrition from San Diego State University. She served four years in the United States Navy in Diego Garcia and San Diego. Barbara is currently pursuing a master’s degree in business administration.
Nicholas, a Buffalo Grove High School graduate, received a bachelor’s degree in political science from the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland, and a master’s degree in security policy from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. He is currently an aviation intelligence officer for VP-9 Patrol Squadron at Kaneohe Bay Marine Corps base in Hawaii.
Catholic Mission Aid Benefit Dinner
Catholic Mission Aid (Misijonska Znamkarska Akcija) will hold its annual fund-raising dinner in St. Mary’s Parish Center on Sunday, March 12. The meal will be served between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The first course is Slovenian dumpling soup, then lots of fresh salad with the main course of either roast chicken or roast beef.
CMA supports 80 Slovenian missionaries around the
world. An $80 donation equally distributed means each missionary gets only $1. But if everybody comes to this dinner, and thousands of dollars are raised, then each missionary may get hundreds of dollars.

Mlakar Walks Down Memory Lane U

Well, after last week’s column, I am sure that no one made notes as to how to make apple strudel according to Ray. It will be a little while before I tackle that again. I know about now all of us will be glad once the snow leaves and have a hunch that warmer weather is around the comer. Something tells me that come 9th of March, the warm weather will be here to stay.
Got to compliment my fellow writer Rudy Pivik in last week’s paper in which he told us about his earlier employment. I guess Rudy has had his share of huge boat rides. Huge ships and huge bodies of water with the ship bobbing up and down get me mnning for the side rails every time.
Before I forget, my congratulations to our 50-year members of KSKJ Lodge 146, namely Donald Brown, Lyon Kossakoski, and Diane Mullett, who along with other members of KSKJ who likewise will be celebrating 50 years with KSKJ. The big celebration will take place on 19 March with a special Mass in their honor in St. Lawrence Church, followed by a banquet at the East 80th Slovenian National Home. Here is wishing them God’s blessings for a healthful future and many years ahead with their respective KSKJ Lodge.
I joined KSKJ Lodge 146 just about a year ago and have serious doubts that I will be around to celebrate my 50 years. Over the past year I have attended many events with our lodge and
have to commend them for their fine activities. Fortunately, we have Josie Kmet as the Lodge Recreation and Finance Secretary and she has done a great job. In most of our activities we have been joined by members from Lodges 63 and 150 which make our gatherings that much more meaningful.
With us well into Lent, I guess we will be losing a few pounds before it is over. As for fasting on Fridays, there is always some good fish fries to attend at the various churches as well as our Slovenian National Homes. It seems Lent is the only time I get my fill of real home made potato pancakes. Another favorite my mom used to make on Fridays was cottage cheese dumplings.
After they have boiled in water, one throws them into a frying pan with buttered bread crumbs and then sprinkle sugar on them. Needless to say that if they would have served that at the “Last Supper,” perhaps that would not have been the “last supper.” They would have come back for more.
I have to admit that I lost a few pounds in the last week or so, but it does not show. I know I have not lost enough for my appearance at the recreation center’s pool. I cannot yet float, but then it is hard to get anything that weighs over 200 pounds to stay afloat. It seems that the only one that is not watching his so-called “in-take” is Happy Harry, my cairn terrier. He is as smart as a whip for he knows when I go to church on Sunday, because when I leave the house I get dressed in a suit and tie and
he will sit there and wait at the back door until I get home for he knows that I dare not walk into the house without bringing him a sausage and egg croissant from the fast food store. Then he is in his glory. Fortunately, I take one bite before he takes over. For some reasons, animals, especially dogs, never heard of fasting regardless if it is Lent or not. Must be why they call them lucky dogs.
Well, time I bring this column to an end, but not before I give you a few tips. Are you ready? Smart employee plus smart boss equals profit. A smart boss plus a dumb employee equals production. Dumb boss plus smart employee equals promotion. Dumb boss plus dumb employee equals overtime.
Okay, how about a little shopping math? A man will pay $20 for a $10 item he needs. A woman will pay $10 for a $20 item that she doesn’t need.
Last but not least.

Ingredients:
Dough:
2 C flour 11 salt
2 T shortening 1 egg
1/3 C + 2 T lukewarm water

Filling (for a double recipe of dough):
Two - 24 oz. cartons of cottage cheese 12 eggs
15 slices of bread, cubed 2 T chopped parsley Wit salt WtC butter Directions:
Sift flour and salt. Cut in shortening. Drop egg in flour mixture and add water. Mix well. Knead dough until smooth and elastic. Let dough rest about 1 hour, covered. Place dough on a floured cloth. Roll and stretch dough until it is about as thin as wax paper.
While dough is resting, make filling. Brown the >read cubes in butter, add the eggs, and fry until scrambled. Cool, and add to the cottage cheese, parsley and salt. Mix well.	-
Spread filling on 1/3 of dough. Roll jelly-roll! fashion. Coil in circle. Drop in salted boiling water, j Cook covered for 35 minutes. Drain, lift out of pan and I serve with buttered bread crumbs.	j

Recalling the Royal Castle restaurants

An early forerunner of McDonalds, our neighborhood Royal Castle, around the comer from Bill’s Clothes at Five Points in Cleveland, was one of a popular chain of hamburger joints. Their smaller than average burger was served with grilled onions and pickle chips. Most were eaten as is. But if you wanted to ruin a good thing, jars of ketchup, relish and mustard sat on a self-serve counter. At five cents apiece, six for a quarter, the miniburger was gone in two bites. But at the price, they were a bargain. With better than average nickel coffee, a hearty meal was 30 cents.
Six-packs of burgers, in grease-spotted white paper bags, were flying out the Castle gate, day and night. For eating in, there .were chrome-plated. stools with

orange leatherette seats, also well occupied. In the midst of a business district, and a stone’s throw from the high school, it was a great location for walk-in traffic. The tiny, low-rent operation was thriving.
Longer back than I remember, the Five Points Theater occupied the space next to Bill’s Clothes. After it closed, most of the long, narrow building, ideally shaped for its next occupant, was converted to a bowling alley. Sometime in the 1930s, the former theater lobby became an open market. Sheltered by the old marquee, they sold edible goodies from elsewhere. It was a nice place to shop for Christmas treats: dates, figs, fancy citrus, and mixed nuts in the shell.
Christmas was the time to splurge on giant navel oranges. At 69 cents a dozen, the Blue Goose oranges were

an expensive indulgence. A colorful, eye-catching picture of this strange animal decorated crates of this popular brand.
In 1973, on our first trip to Florida and Disney World, the Goose was not included in the extensive display of orange crate art at the Citrus Tower in Clermont, Florida. My inquiries were met with blank stares, and I began to think I had imagined the whole thing. More recently, my memory was vindicated when I saw the brilliant label in a similar exhibit at Selby Gardens here in Sarasota, Florida. Blue Goose was a California navel orange, which explains why it wasn’t displayed in Clermont - the heart of Florida citrus country.
From movies to bowling to oranges to hamburgers. Kind of makes you wonder how it all started... way back when.

Peach Schnapps Cake
(Makes 12 to 14 servings)
1 pkg. deluxe French Vanilla cake mix 3 eggs
3A cup orange juice Vi cup peach schnapps 1/3 cup vegetable oil
Topping:
1	cup thawed non-dairy whipping topping (Cool Whip)
2	teaspoons peach schnapps
Glaze:
Vi cup peach preserves 2 tablespoons peach schnapps
Combine cake mix, eggs, orange juice, peach schnapps and oil in bowl. Beat at medium speed for 4 minutes. Grease and flour a 10-inch Bundt pan.;| Pour into pan and bake in 350° preheated oven for 45 - 50 minutes or until it tests done. Cool in pan on a wire rack for 10 minutes. Invert onto a serving plate to let cake cool. (Cake should be lukewarm before glazing.)
GLAZE: Combine peach preserves and peach schnapps in small bowl. Brush liberally all over the warm cake.
TOPPING: Combine whipped topping with schnapps.
PRESENTATION: Spoon topping onto slice of cake just as they’re being served.

able annuities, bought with a very sharp eye on fees. She looked shocked and asked, “What retirement portfolio? Do I look like I am at retirement age?”
“No,” I answered. You look youthful. But what are you doing financially about your retirement?”
“Well, nothing,” she said. “I don’t even have any money in a savings account and barely any in my checking account.”
“Do you have a 401 (k)? Or maybe a pension? Or IRAs?” No,” she said defiantly. “Well,” I asked “with all due respect, how are you going to provide for your retirement?”
“I don’t know,” she said.
“I think you should try to save maybe $500 a month starting right now in a very carefully chosen variable annuity, or else a fund I will help you choose,” I said.
“I can’t” she said. “I don’t have the money. Besides, $500 a month is nothing. It

Depression-Level Savings Rate
In a nation in the midst of a major economic boom, we’re running a budget deficit of very roughly $400 billion. Most of our stocks and bonds are bought by the Chinese and Japanese and by the world’s major oil-producing nations.
At this point, foreigners run a trade surplus with the U.S. approximating $720 billion a year. That is, we’re buying from foreigners about three-quarters of a trillion dollars more each year than we’re selling to the rest of the world.

American consumers’ savings rate is in negative territory, roughly minus 1.5 percent. This hasn’t been seen since the middle of the Great Depression in 1933.
It gets worse. Total consumer spending last year was very roughly $8.5 trillion. Most of this came from borrowing on credit cards.
We, as a nation, are living from payday to payday.
Boomers: Unprepared
But it gets even worse: Medicare is going to be bankrupt in about 11 years, maybe sooner.
We are, in a way, already bankrupt just from Medicare.
In the face of these extreme imbalances and uncertainties, you would expect Americans to be saving like crazy, to provide against these risks. Instead, the average person is going even deeper into debt.
The Baby Boom generation is pitifully unprepared for the future. The average savings for Baby Boom households including their homes, is not much over $100,0000. Roughly half of those boomers have little retirement savings or none.
Right now we have a fairly buoyant stock markets, and corporate profits are extremely high and Americans could save more.
This is a society that needs to wake up to the gravity of reality. We are living on borrowed time.

Carefree Years 1927-1930 (fall)
YORK, ONI., Canada - I w*s bom in 1923 in Hrusevje, a small town about 5 km from Postojna, Slovela on the main road toward Tfst (Trieste). The whole area, with its villages and countryside, was dependent °n the hand-cultivated land. Most of the fruits were dried, kut to a large extend, were used to make wine or whisky- A small portion of income came from providing various services to tourists and the sale of hay to Tri-este, along with the sale of Mmber, milk, cattle, pigs and chickens.
Houses were constmcted °f stone and contained large hallways with open fires at jhe end for cooking. One large room served as the liv-ln8 room and all family events took place there. In *he comer, there was a bed °r a dresser with drawers where the young children slePt. The children also Played in this room. to straighten short nails to be reused by the shoemaker. Black fingernails often resulted and the scars and damage to the fingers remained forever.
There was no electricity or gas for cooking and wood-
burning stoves were used. It was a lot of fun to bring the chopped wood into the house and to pile it under or around the sheet metal stove.
The construction of a new brick dairy processing plant was a sign of advancing times. Many people, including children, toured the building when it opened and viewed some of the cheeses on display. To my mother’s dismay, I poked my finger into the cheese and left a hole in the sample.
A game called sheep and wolves was a favorite pastime around the table, especially during the winter. It was drawn on a piece of paper, and black and white beans were used for keeping score. We also played a game (drawn on a piece of paper as well) where one had to try to put three beans in a straight line, while your opponent tried to prevent this move. A drawing on this page shows you what the game looked like.
After the First World War, the entire province was clas-sifieded as an occupied territory. All the peasants were carefully watched by the occupying Italian army. One day, it was announced that Mussolini was going to pass on his way to Postojna. All the windows and doors were ordered closed and no light was to be seen from any cracks. No one was allowed outside except for the guards. As the villagers
stayed behind closed doors and shuttered windows, Mussolini passed by without incident.
As a result of the Italian occupation, the incumbent Slovenian mayors were replaced with Italian mayors. Of course, this did not go over too well with the villagers and it so happened that very close to our home, the newly-installed mayor was shot dead through a glass window on the very first night of his arrival. The hole in the glass was patched and remained that way for many years. At the time, I remembering hearing a shot and the sound of footsteps running by the side of our house. It was many years later that I learned what had happened and where the gun was hidden.
Spring was also an enjoyable time of the year, as we played in the front and the rear of the house. Small

chicks were let outside and children were ordered to watch them closely so that the crows would not take them. Unfortunately, the crows were very clever as they hid in the hedges, waiting for a chick to come close. They would then grab the chicks, while only a few meters away, the children watched helplessly. Often, someone would watch to see where the crow fled to feed its young. Then, an older family member would go to the nest and grab the crows and we would have a good crow meat supper. Turnabout is fair play.
The chickens were also allowed to go across the street to graze on those fields. Occasionally, a car would run over one as it crossed. The chicken meat, delicious though it was, could not replace the sorrow of having lost the chicken, which could have been sold or used to produce eggs.
Spring, summer and fall days were busy. We enjoyed planting, picking and sorting potatoes. Another impdttant job was to gather the lost hay from the sides of the road. Young boys, emulating the grown-ups with horses, would be responsible for loading it onto a small hand-driven wagon.
Sunday was set aside for recreation and sports and very often we played bocce with specially-selected round stones.
The first horse ride was a • proud moment. A ride on wagon planks when manure was taken to the field was also memorable. Once, despite my mother’s disapproval, a relative took me for a ride down the hill on a big wagon. We arrived safely at the bottom.
It was normal for every-
body to have a small pocket knife for peeling potatoes, fruit and other items. If we cut our fingers, we would get more instructions on how to use it properly. However, in order to use an axe for chopping wood, strict instructions were provided.
A special fall event was a visit to a neighbor’s fruit drying oven, where we were allowed to taste some of the dried fruit. I was very interested in learning about how the fruit dryer was constructed. It was built of stone (for the fire) and heat was directed to the bottom of a wooden screen. Above the screen with the fruit was a space that was tightly covered with a wooden plank. This is where the heat would be most intense. A small fire heated the stone framing and retained the heat for a long
time, because it was below ground level and not exposed to the wind.
A tour of the cow stables resulted in a swift kick from the cow when the cleaning fork touched the cow’s leg. We used a petroleum lantern while we worked in the stables, especially during the evening as we milked the cows.
Practical tools were introduced at an early stage of one’s life. Rakes, forks, shovels, and brooms were used regularly, especially rakes and forks in the summer when gathering the hay or turning it over for faster drying. One had to be careful to watch one’s step as snakes could be lurking. Also, we would not want to disturb the wasps nests and get bitten.
As a young boy, I was keenly interested in how things were made. How the doors were made and hung, how the toilet in the backyard by the manure pile was constructed, how to store the hay outside and how to make charcoal - these are the kind of things I would observe in detail.

Celebrating the life of George Švajger
George Švajger (1936-2005) was the second son of Hermina and Roman Švajger Sr. Like his older brother Roman, and younger sister Margie, he was bom in Trzic, Slovenia on Feb. 29, 1936) and emigrated to the United States in January, 1951.
Like many Slovenians who , came to the U.S. at that time, he and his family made their passage through several Austrian camps. George continued his education in the United States first at St. Vitus, then attended Cathedral Latin High School, and went on to John Carroll University at which time he joined ROTC program. George served his country honorably in the Armed Forces (Army) and	was	stationed in
Schweinfurt, Germany.
On June 4, 1966 George and Margie Bizyak married and lived within the St. Vitus church community for several	years.	They	were
blessed with two children, Mark and Jennifer. George enjoyed his retirement for the past six years after having spent 33 years at Cuyahoga Molded Plastics. George unexpectedly passed away on December 3, 2005. The following eulogy was given by his nephew Martin Švajger and presented here to share with those who knew him.
One of the questions we face in our life is:
What is God’s plan for me, Why am I here,
How do I understand God’s gift of life for my life.
I believe Stric George thought of these questions. Not dwelling on them, but as a checkup from the neck up periodically, throughout his life. The following adapted poem by Claudia Minden Weisz entitled, “And God Said No,” accentuates these questions and intensifies our longing for real answers in our life from our God.
“And God Said, ‘No’.”
I asked God to take away .my pride,
And God said NO.
He said it was not for Him to take away, but for me to give it up.
I asked God to take away my limitations and make me whole again.
And God said, “No.”
He said your spirit is whole, and your body is only temporary.
I asked God to grant me patience,
And God said, “No.”
He said that patience is a by-product of tribulation; it isn’t granted, it’s earned.

I believe George understood God’s gift of life in the things he loved. He loved to sing, tell jokes, to laugh, and to make others laugh. He loved to play cards, balinca, travel, see the mountains, and in his younger days - to ski.
He loved parties, weddings and Korotan concerts. He loved gatherings of family and friends - such as his annual Notre Dame fundraising parties. Stric George
loved good meals, eating cake, potica, and other sweets. He loved watching the Browns and the Indians sports teams - always convinced that they’ll lose and that their playing the game was only to prolong his agony.
He loved to give an uncle’s advice. As one of his nephews was getting ready to go away to college, an uncle said, “Study hard and get good grades.” Then Stric George said, “Have a ball, kid.” He loved making 8mm movies and then showing them at Christmas or other holidays whenever he could break out the equipment or have a captured audience.
He loved his wife, Margie, and celebrated 39 years of marriage with her. He loved his children Mark and Jennifer and cherished the time they had together, or the phone calls they had just to make sure they made it home from work okay.
Stric George at least in the past, had said he felt he was the “black sheep in the family.” I think that the songs of his life, his laughter, his humor, his sparkling twinkling eyes, his boyish charm, his commitment to his family and friends, his love for his wife, children, his parents, and parents-in-law, his brothers, sisters, his friends, his nephews and nieces and the memories that are planted in our hearts and minds - make him not the black sheep that he may of thought, but a Christian, a disciple of Christ finding his way with the Lord.
Stric George, today we honor your life, mourn the passing of your life with us on earth, and celebrate your new life with your God and your heavenly family. We miss you, we love you, and we look forward to seeing you again in the land of the living.

Rep. Yuko Passes MS Bill
Ohio House Bill 379 which designates March as “Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month,” was voted out of the House last week.
State Representative Kenny Yuko, D-Richmond Heights, formally introduced House Bill 379 which designates March as “Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month, on Oct. 13, 2005.
According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, one out of every 1,000 Ohioans has been diagnosed with MS. This is one of the highest incidence rates of any disease, anywhere. Furthermore,	approximately
400,000 people in the United States acknowledge having
Multiple Sclerosis and every week about 200 people are diagnosed with the disease. Worldwide, MS is estimated to affect over 2.5 million individuals.
Multiple Sclerosis is thought to be an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system, which consists of the brain, spinal cord and the optic nerves. Common symptoms of MS include, but are not limited to, fatigue, vision problems, , depression, abnormal sensations such as numbness and difficulty in walking.
House Bill 379 passed the House with a vote of 96 - 0. It now goes before the Ohio Senate.
Eat Your Way to Good Health
Everybody should know by now that the secret to a long and healthy life is to avoid an excess of calories and eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. But which are the vital victuals?
Studies of diet/gene interactions have been under way for a number of years but until now researchers have been limited to investigating one gene, or at most a handful, and maybe one or two biochemical pathways. They know that low-fat diets can help people with two variants of a gene known as APOE to reduce their risk of heart disease.
So far, studies have been linked to simple groups of nutrients rather than whole foods.
However, advances in biology and computing developed during the race to sequence the human gnome have created new tools to unravel the complex interaction between our 40,000 genes and the thousands of compounds in our food.
Ruan Elliott of the Institute of Food Research in Norwich, UK, says, “People may be genetically susceptible to different conditions and may need to adjust their lifestyle. Our bodies react to what we eat. We eat many different kinds of food and many of those foods contain thousands of compounds on top of the basic protein, carbohydrate, fat and vitamins, many of which will have effects on our health.”
Dr. Elliott is interested in the thousands of plant micronutrients that have biological effects on the human body. “Carotenoids, like lycopene in tomatoes, are thought to
be highly beneficial for protecting against prostate cancer, and maybe have a therapeutic effect, but there is relatively little known about why.”
But those hoping that nutrigenomics will lead to simple advice about what to eat may be disappointed. “Something good for one tissue at one level could be bad for another” Dr. Elliott says. Nutrients are also likely to play different roles during pregnancy, childhood, adulthood, and old age.
“There are thousands and thousands of candidates i° fruit and vegetables. The problem is identifying the important ones and there is an issue of how much peopk consume, how much gets into the body, and what effect it has,” he says.

V največjem slovenskem perutninskem podjetju, Perutnini Ptuj (1900 zaposlenih doma, 500 v tujini, 450 rejcev kooperantov) poročajo, da se je zaradi ptičje gripe prodaja perutninskega mesa in izdelkov že zmanjšala za 15 odstotkov. Kmetijska ministrica Marija Lukačič je rekla, da je zelo malo možnosti za poplačilo kakršne koli škode zaradi ptičje gripe tako rejcem kot živilsko-predelovalni industriji.
Ob sicer več kot 98.000 brezposelnih v Sloveniji je vlada odobrila še več dovoyeiy za tuje delavce v državi
V zadnjih mesecih zaznamujejo vedno več brezposelnih v Sloveniji, čeprav je številka še vedno pod 100.000 in to nekaj več kot 98.000. Na svoji zadnji februarski seji je slovenska vlada določila letošnjo kvoto 17.350 dovoljenj za tujce na trgu dela, kar je 650 več kakor v letu 2005. Tuji delavci so večinoma iz držav nekdanje Jugoslavije in je tudi res, da zasedajo delovna mesta, ki jih Slovenci ne želijo.
Minister za delo Janez Drobnič v zelo nepryetni situaciji
Minister za delo Janez Drobnič se je moral opraviti, sicer po elektronski pošti, novinarki RTV Slovenije, ker ji je ob nekem vprašanju s silo odrinil mikrofon. To je sprožilo ogorčenje s strani novinarjev, sam premier Janez Janša je moral priznati, da je bilo Drobničevo dejanje neprimerno, da pa o njegovi zamenjavi ne razmišlja. Novinarka naj bi bila po Drobniču postavila vprašanje, ki je bilo skrajno neprimerno.
Sprejem za olimpijce
Zadnji dan februarja je minister za šport Milan Zver pripravil v Vili Podrožnik sprejem za slovenske olimpijce, ki so sodelovali na nedavnih igrah v italijanskem Torinu.

Umrla je Katherine Vrh, rojena Hribar, vdova po Josephu, mati Josepha, 2-krat stara mati, 4-krat prastara mati, sestra Franka, Josepha in Mary Watts. Pogreb je bil 6. marca v oskrbi Želetovega zavoda, kjer so bili pogrebni obredi, s pokopom na Kalvarije pokopališču.

Dne 5. marca je umrl Edward J. Slovenec, mož Sally, roj. Durk, oče Richarda in Karen, 4-krat stari oče, brat Franka in Josephine Knopick (oba že pok.). Pogreb je bil 8. marca v oskrbi Brickmanovega zavoda s sv. mašo v cerkvi sv. Felicite.
Robert L. Legan
Umrl je 67 let stari Robert L. Legan, mož Madeline, roj. Kalich, oče Roberta, Mary Beth Finlay, Susan Scheibenreif in Martina, 5-krat stari oče, brat Thomasa, veteran ameriških marincev. Pogreb je bil 6. marca s sv. mašo v cerkvi St. Bede the Venerable v Mentorju.

Dne 1. marca je umrla 93 let stara Josephine Muhic, rojena Kinkoff, vdova po Franku, mati Ronalda in GeraldineStipovich, 10-krat stara mati, 13-krat prastara mati, sestra že pok. Marthe. Pogreb je bil 4. marca v oskrbi Brickmanovega zavoda s sv. mašo v cerkvi sv. Kristine in pokopom na Kalvarije pokopališču.

Slovencu iz Washingtons
Ljubljana (Družina, 26. febr. 2006) - Minulo leto je v začetku septembra vokalna skupina Cantate Domino iz Kočevja, v kateri pojeva, gostovala pri kočevarskih Nemcih in Slovencih v Severni Ameriki. Po končani turneji sva si želela ogledati Washington, D.C. Gospod Franc Šega iz Clevelanda nama je priporočil za vodnika svojega dolgoletnega prijatelja Staneta Šušteršiča iz Washingtona. Poklicala sva ga po telefonu in prijazno nama je obljubil pomoč.
V nedeljo, 11. septembra, sva se z njim srečala pri maši v romarski cerkvi Marije Brezmadežne v Washingtonu (National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception). Po maši nama je najprej razkazal katedralo, zgrajeno v bizantinsko-roman-skem slogu.
Notranjščino svetišča krasi več kot 2000 ton marmorja ter čudoviti mozaiki in barvni vitraji. Na enem izmed njih je upodobljen tudi škof Friderik Baraga, slovenski

V tej največji katoliški cerkvi v ZDA in sedmi po velikosti na svetu je več kot 65 kapel in oltarjev različnih narodov iz vsega sveta, ki so posvečeni Mariji. Papež Pij IX. je namreč leta 1847 razglasil Brezmadežno za zavetnico Združenih držav Amerike.
Leta 1959 posvečena stavba ter umetnine v njej izražajo raznolikost duhovne povezanosti Američanov vseh narodnosti z Marijo.
Ameriški Slovenci so leta 1968 ob stoti obletnici smrti škofa Friderika Barage začeli akcijo za postavitev slovenske kapele v tem najbolj znanem ameriškem narodnem svetišču. Po pripovedovanju gospoda Šušteršiča smo Slovenci zadnji dobili prostor za kapelo, ki je posvečena brezjanski Mariji Pomagaj, zavetnici Slovenije.
Nad marmornim oltarjem je kopija Layerjeve čudežne podobe. Desno od oltarja je upodobljen škof Friderik Baraga in njegova misel: “To je vse, kar si želim; biti tam, kjer me želi Gospod."
Na drugi strani je Anton Martin Slomšek in njegove besede: “Sveta vera bodi vam luč, materni jezik pa bodi vam ključ do zveličanske narodne omike.”
Kapelo krasijo še štiri marmorne plošče Franceta Goršeta s podobami krsta kneza Gorazda, škofa Slomška med oznanjanjem božje besede, škofa Barage, ki krščuje Indijance, ter slovenskih

priseljencev v Ameriki.
Kapelo je 15. avgusta 1971 posvetil mariborski škof Držečnik. Slovenska maša je v kapeli enkrat na mesec, v glavni ladji pa enkrat na leto, in sicer na veliki šmaren.
Po ogledu cerkve in nakupu spominkov v bogato založeni trgovini smo posedeli v prijetni restavraciji, ki je del cerkvene stavbe.
Gospod Stane je dopolnil že 84 let, zato sva menila, da ga bova midva peljala po ameriški prestolnici, a se dobrodušni mož ni dal. Tako naju je ves nedeljski sončen dan do noči sam vozil do znamenitosti, muzejev, spomenikov, palač, razglednih točk ...
Kar neprijetno nama je bilo “mučiti” priletnega gospoda, toda on je neprenehoma pripovedoval, razlagal, kazal, obujal spomine na rodno Slovenijo in drugo domovino, Ameriko. Pohvalil se je, da je po washingtonskih ulicah vodil že veliko Slovencev, posebno rad pa je imel pevce. Tako kot nama je še mnogim pomagal urediti cenovno ugodnejše bivanje v sicer dragem mestu.
Sam je dolga leta prepeval. Bil je ustanovni člana Korotana, znamenitega slovenskega zbora iz Clevelanda. S ponosom nama je v spomin podaril njihovo zgoščenko. Želel si je, da mu pošljeva slovenske Marijine pesmi, da bi jih predvajali na Radiu Glas Amerika. Trideset let Je bil voditelj slovenskih oddaj na njem, sedaj pa se je še trudil popestriti glasbeni program.
Ob koncu dneva mu je bilo predvsem žal, da nimava vsaj še en dan časa za ogled velemesta. Veliko bi nama še rad pokazal. Z veliko hvaležnostjo sva se poslovila od prijaznega gospoda Staneta. Čudila sva se njegovi življenjski energiji in bistremu umu v visoki starosti, saj je štel skoraj toliko let kot midva skupaj.
Takoj po vrnitvi sva mu poslala Marijine pesmi Slovenskega komornega zbora in nekaj spominkov iz domovine. Hvaležno nama Je odgovoril s pismom in fotografijami, ki Jih Je posnel med najinim obiskom.

Ljubljana - Razredčene vrst slovenskih duhovnikov v Clevelandu je nedavno zadela še ena žalostna novica: v soboto, 21. januarja, je v devetdesetem letu starosti umrl upokojeni župnik Viktor Tomc, ki je bil več let tudi župnik druge največje slovenske župnije v Clevelandu pri Mariji Vnebovzeti.
Pokojni se je rodil 29. oktobra leta 1916 v družini Mihaela in Katarine, roj. Kralj, v Clevelandu. Obiskoval je osnovno šolo župnije sv. Vida in klasično gimnazijo pri stolnici, študiral na jezuitski univerzi John Carroll in v clevelandskem semenišču.
Dne 18. decembra leta 1943 ga je tedanji škof Hoban posvetil v duhovnika v katedrali sv. Janeza Evangelista.
Njegovo prvo službeno mesto je bilo pri Mariji Vnebovzeti v Collimvoodu, kjer je bil tri leta kaplan. Leta 1946 ga je škof premaknil za kaplana v domačo župnijo pri sv. Vidu, kjer je kot kaplan deloval kar deset let.
Pozneje je deloval v župniji sv. Kristine, ki je takrat še veljala za slovensko, nato pa bil župnik pri Sveti družini v mestu Parma.
Leta 1965 je bil spet imenovan za kaplana pri Mariji Vnebovzeti, kjer je dve leti pozneje prevzel službo župnika. Kar dvajset let je deloval med župljani in si pridobil velik ugled.
Župnijo je vodil v letih liturgične prenove. Poskrbel pa Je tudi, da so bili poplačani vsi dolgovi nove cerkve pri Mariji Vnebovzeti, ki jo je zidal njegov prednik. Leta 1987 se je upokojil in se preselil v zasebno stanovanje. Še vedno pa je rad pomagal po župnijah. Rad je maševal in tudi sicer dejavno podpiral slovenski dom upokojencev (Slovene Home for the Aged) na Neff Road.
Posebno je častil sv. Janeza Boška in se zato v mladih letih zelo posvečal delavski mladini. Zelo si je prizadeval za razglasitev Friderika Baraga za blaženega in bil leta 1970 imenovan za vice-postulatorja v tem postopku. Rad je molil v ta namen in se mu priporočal. Nič nenavadno torej, da je umrl dva dni po obletnici Baragove smrti.
Umrl je v letu, ko se župnija pri Mariji Vnebovzeti spominja stote obletnice ustanovitve in na različne načine praznuje ta dogodek. Tudi pogrebno slovo v četrtek, 26. januarja, ki so se ga udeležili kar štirje škofi in veliko duhovnikov, je bilo lepa vstajenjska slovesnost, ki je dala pečat obhajanju župnijskega jubileja. Naj g. Viktor izprosi slovenski župniji in slovenski skupnosti v tem mestu novih duhovnih poklicev, saj bo le tako župnija ostala živa in dejavna v novem stoletju svojega obstoja.

SLOVENIA 2006 - Bitka za njeno dušo
Po 6-tedenskem bivanju v domovini, sem se vračal preko oceana do kraja nasičen z doživetji, upanji, željami in - bojaznimi. Predvsem: Slovenija, tisti biser pod Triglavom, je prelestna tudi v zimski lepoti in navdaja človeka s ponosom, da je izšel iz njenega krila, pa četudi se zdaj potepa po širokem svetu.
Ker si domišljam, da bi bralce Ameriške Domovine zanimala dogajanje najnovejšega časa v domovini, naj navedem le vtise in opazovanja, z logičnim razumevanjem, da gre za moja osebna opazovanja.

Življenje v Sloveniji je normalno, opazen je močan napredek na vseh področjih. Ljudje živijo razmeroma dobro, nekateri gotovo tudi zelo udobno, ostaja pa tudi zaskrbljujoča plast ljudi, ki so brez dela in, kar je morda še huje, ki dela niti ne iščejo več in so se prepustili usodi.
Sicer pa je slovensko dogajanje še najbolj primerljivo “loncu miši", kjer se vse preriva in giblje In je nemogoče napovedovati končni izid tega prerivanja, še manj pa njegove posledice.
Izarabljanje katastrofe v New Orleansu
V Ljubljani sem prispel, ko so v tisku izzvenevali poslednji akordi domala histeričnega antiamerika-nizma nekaterih levičarskih žurnalistov v zvezi s katastrofo v New Orleansu. Njihova poročila so se cedila škodoželjnosti in ihtavnega kritiziranja ameriške vlade in njenih agencij, kot da bi ne bila ena bistvenih postavk vsake "naravne" katastrofe - nepripravljenost ljudi, ki jih zadene. Noe je bil edini človek v zgodovini, ki je bil “pripravljen" na katastrofo, in njega je vendar opozoril Bog sam!
Pri prebiranju tistih iz-
zivov glede New Orleansa je dobil človek čisto določen vtis, da je pisce neskončno mikala skušnjava, da bi zapisali poleg vsega drugega še: “Boh jih je štrafal", pa si tega iz bojazni pred svojimi ideološkimi vodniki le niso upali zapisati.
Slovenski vojaki v Irak
Ni še do kraja potihnilo to kritiziranje, ko je prišlo na tapeto novo vprašanje: slovenska vlada se je odločila, da pošlje v Irak štiri vojaške inštruktorje, kot svoj doprinos odnosno delež odgovornosti, ki jih je prevzela kot članica Evropske zveze in NATA.
Ljudje, idejni potomci nekdanjih partijskih veljakov, ki so po vojni brez pomisleka odredili eksekucijo deset tisočev Slovencev, so zdaj hinavsko zavijali oči in se tresli od ogorčenja nad to vladno odločitvijo. “Koliko trupel. Mr. Rupel?” je dramatično vpraševal tednik Mladina. Ja, koliko: največ štiri, seveda.
S tem gotovo ni rečeno, da lahko kdorkoli pahne štiri slovenska življenja v takšno ali drugačno nevarnost, toda pri takem razmišljanju je treba ostati na realnih tleh, ne pa izkoriščati politične odločitve in dejanja v svoja strankarsko-politične in ideološke namene.
Janez Janševa vlada deluje uspešno
Takega “izkoriščanja" ne manjka. Levičarski komentatorji se izživljajo v nenehni kritiki vseh odločitev Janševe vlade. Prihaja tudi do odkritega posmehovanja vladi in njenim ministrom. Za ce-

Žal najine božično-no-voletne voščilnice ni več prejel. V Družini sva prebrala, da se je sredi decembra za vedno vrnil v rodno slovensko grudo ... Ob branju osmrtnice sva imela solzne oči, čeprav sva bila z njim le en dan.

Prijateljem in znancem sporočamo, da je po težki bolezni v University Hospital v Denver, CO umrl naš Uubi mož in ati, dr. Lojze Arko. Predviden s svetimi ^kramenti, v krogu svoje družine in ob petju Marijinih pesmi, je zatisnil svoje blage oči v petek, 3. febru-arja, 2006. Pogrebno mašo v cerkvi Blessed Sacrament v Denver je opravil domači župnik ob asistenci pokojnikovih prijateljev, Rev. Brian Mohan in g. pater Kri-zolog. Pokopan je na starem zgodovinskem pokopališču *airmount v Denver.

Vaši hvaležni ameriški Slovenci
lo vrsto zakonov, ki jih je v preteklem letu sprejel parlament, v katerem Ima večino desna opcija, zahteva leva opozicija ustavno presojo. Da s tem ovira delovanje tako vlade kot parlamenta, kot ustavnega sodišča samega, je ne moti.
Vlada, tako se zdi, je stabilna. Z zadoščenjem, seveda, je sprejela priznanje Zahoda za lanskoletno uspešno predsedovanje organizaciji OVSE. Predsednik vlade Janez Janša ostaja stari, uravnovešeni, flegmatični, morda nekoliko brezbarven politik. Državne posle pa vodi s hladno previdnostjo in mu opozicija v več kot letu dni še ni uspela “natakniti" kakršnegakoli
resničnega neuspeha, poloma, ali celo škandala.
Isto velja še posebej za Andreja Bajuka, finančnega ministra, ki je bil v okviru Evropske zveze proglašen za “finančnega ministra leta 2005", s čimer je bila odločilno ovržena posmehljiva obravnava njegovih sposobnosti na straneh levih publikacij, kot, da bi vsa pretekla leta na različnih mednarodnih finančnih ustanovah samo štampiljke pritiskal na uradna pisma.

Kričanje opozicije je morda tudi rezultat namernega taktiziranja, ki naj bi zakrilo siceršnja (DALJE na str. 14)

O njem ni veliko znanega, saj ga predsednik vlade ni nikoli izpostavljal v javnosti, znanih je le nekaj pomembnejših dogodkov, ki so zaznamovali njegovo življenje in jih je sin pred leti zapisal v svoji knjigi Okopi.
Eden izmed pomembnejših dogodkov za Janševega očeta se je zgodil po koncu vojne, ko ga je, potem ko je bil dvakrat na silo rekrutiran v vaško stražo in so ga po koncu vojne Angleži izročili partizanom, le božja previdnost rešila zanesljive smrti. Janša je ta dogodek po očetovem pripovedovanju v Okopih opisal takole:
"Neke noči, krog 3. julija, so poklicali tudi Janeza .. Komaj je stopil na hodnik, je že dobil brco ... Po dva in dva so skupaj zvezali z žico in jih zmetali na tovornjake ... V Kočevju so jih na železniški postaji nagnali z vagonov in jih postavili v vrsto. Kolono so pognali proti Rogu ... Zvezane so postavili v polkrog pred rob brezna. Brez povelja in brez obotavljanja so zapele strojnice. Iz neposredne bližine. Smrtno zadeti ali samo ranjeni, mrtvi in živi so padali čez rob in zvezani skupaj vlekli v globino drug drugega.
Janeza je veriga teles med sikanjem krogel potegnila navzdol. Čez nekaj časa se je ovedel. Ni bil zadet ; Izkopal se je izpod teles, med katerimi je bilo še veliko živih ... Od vrha kupa trupel pa do roba brezna je bilo le nekaj metrov. Janez je zagledal na pol podrto drevo, ki je viselo čez rob. Počasi je splezal čez trupla in je oprijel drevesa. Po njem je dosegel rob in se razgledal. Bila je noč ... Odplazil se je stran •••
Po kakih sto metrih se je prenehal plaziti in je opotekajoče stekel."
Kot je zapisal Janša, oče po vojni o tem dogodku otrokom dolgo ni želel govoriti, vseskozi pa se je tudi , izogibal vrednostnih sodb o partizanih. Očitno je ve- , del, česar vse so sposobni njihovi nasledniki.	|

dogajanja v tem sektorju slovenske družbe. Ni namreč nobenega dvoma, da se na levici nekaj dogaja in da je tisto prerivanje tam še najbolj živahno. Nekateri komentatorji celo odkrito pišejo ' o razsulu levice. Anton Ropovo Liberalno demokracijo je prevzel Jelko Kacin, ta, ki je med osamosvojitveno vojno tako učinkovito upravljal tkim. “public relations" porajajoče se slovenske oblasti in bil kasneje izvoljen tudi v evropski parlament.
Kacin pa ima očividno trdno začrtano bodočo linijo svoje stranke in ta linija definitivno teže oz. kaže - v klasično levico. To ugotovitev potrjuje tudi ergonomično dejstvo, da je Kacin sam privzel nekak leninistični osebni izgled: če ga človek pogleda, vidi - mladega Lenina, obenem s srsečimi obrvmi, neurejeno “bradico" in tistim znanim demonskim pogledom in nasmehom. Bilo bi naivno pripisovati to dejstvo golemu, nenamernemu slučaju.
Pri tem ostaja več kot negotova usoda Boris Pahorjeve nekdanje Združene liste, se pravi, direktne naslednice Komunistične partije. Pahor sam, ki
ni bil nikdar doktrinarin komunist in izstopa iz celotne leve garniture kot nekdo, ki bi ga nekoč označili za “salonskega leva", išče svoje pravo mesto v tem zbivanju in prerivanju in se nikakor ne more sklicevati na neko brezpogojno lojalnost svojih pristašev.
V nekem smislu je to prerivanje na levici morda celo pozitivno in koristno za nadaljni razvoj, ker se bodo politične ali, če hočete, strankarske razmere s tem izkristalizirale in ne bo več “nedognanih" opcij. (Npr.: Ko se je v preteklosti Janša odločil za jasnejšo identifikacijo svoje stranke, ki ji je mednarodna Socialistična zveza odrekla članstvo, in je nato opustil tisti “socialni" vzdevek v strankinem imenu, so se stvari razčistile in ljudje so v Janši prepoznali upoštevanja vrednega politika ter mu zaupali vodstvo države.)
Sedanje prerivanje na levici bo torej modra prineslo eno samo levo stranko, s čemer bodo pozicije jasneje začrtane in ne bo več možno nekritično, dobičkarsko mešetarjenje, katerega so se nekatere stranke posluževale v preteklosti.
Kljub Kacinovi precizni formulaciji leve opcije, pa
ostaja to prerivanje še nedorečen element, ki daje bitki za dušo Slovenije še poseben, kritičen prizvok. V vsakem primeru pa se bo ostrina sedanje in nameravane ofenzive levice v tej bitki samo še zaostrila.
Nedavno nenavado obnašanje predsednika Janeza Drnovška
Ob vsem tem se je na slovenskem prizorišču pojavila še vrsta drugih pretresov, med katerimi je brez dvoma najvažnejše zadržanje predsednika države dr. Janeza Drnovška.
Mož doživlja popolno metamorfozo, ki ji daje tudi nek zunanji značaj. Predvsem je zapustil svoje bivališče v Ljubljani in se preselil - na Zaplano nad Vrhniko. (Izbral je dobro, vsaj kar se mene tiče, ker sem v zaplanski okolici prebil več medvojnih tednov, op. p.)
Drnovškovo zdravje je, kot kaže, doseglo neko kritično točko: zdravniki so mu ali izrekli dokončno smrtno obsodbo (mož boleha za rakom) ali pa potrdilo, da je očiščen bolezni. (Op. ur. AD: To slednje po objavljenih poročilih menda ne pride več v poštev.) Ob tem se je odločil ali da svoje zadnje obdobje izrabi za uresničitev oz. začetek določenih v bistvu humanitarnih iniciativ, ali pa da s temi akcijami nakaže novo potrjeno vitalnost.
Sam pač pravi, da je opustil vsa zdravila in da se za nadaljni obstanek znaša izključno na svojo - voljo.
Od tu naprej so se njegove nenavadne odločitve kar vrstile: posebel je v kosovsko vprašanje, sprožil je (doslej neuspešno) iniciativo za rešitev krize v sudanskem Dar-furju (za katerega povprečni Slovenec komaj ve, kje je, kaj šele za njegove probleme), obiskal je Bolivijo in Indijo. Izstopil je iz stranke (LDS), ki jo je dolga leta vodil, in ustanovil tkim. Gibanje za pravičnost in razvoj. Najdete slednjega na internetu na naslovu: www.gibanie.org.
Ob vsem tem je tudi, nepremišljeno po mojem, pomilostil nekega kriminalnega obsojenca, kar mu je prineslo glasno kritiko.
Drnovšek Je dal tudi vrsto izjav, katere je moralo zunanje ministrstvo na vrat na nos definirati kot izjave, do katerih je sicer imel vso pravico, ki pa vendarle ne izražajo uradnega stališča slovenske vlade.
Pomembne spremembe na medijskem področju
Vse to je bilo Izrečeno in doživeto sredi značilnega dogajanja na področju javnih komunikacij. Prišlo Je namreč do temeljite spremembe v dveh ustanovah:	pri časopisu
Delo in pri Radio televiziji Slovenija.
Za obe postojanki, doslej krepko v levih rokah, bi lahko rekli, da sta "padli", čeprav je -ob mojem odhodu nazaj v ZDA - še veliko prezgodaj za napovedovanje končnih posledic teh sprememb.
Načelstvo uprave Dela je namreč prevzel Danilo Slivnik, nekdanji žurnalist tega časopisa, kasneje pa urednik opozicijskega tednika Mag. Z vodilnega položaja pri RTV Slovenija pa je bil odstranjen nekdanji šef Komunistič-
ne partije Janez Kocijan- ] čič, “človek z rokami v žepih", kot ga zdaj ozna- , čujejo. to v zvezi z inči- , dentom, ko je pred leti v Kočevskem Rogu spre- } mljal spravno srečanj6 | takratnega predsednika ^ Milana Kučana in takrat- ^ nega nadškofa dr. Alojzi' ^ ja Šuštarja - z rokami v j žepih.	£

Misijonska srečanja in pomenki
1590. Danes pa vas vse, ki živite v mestu
ali okolici našega Clevelanda, lepo vabim v imenu vseh sodelujočih, da se odzovete in pridete na kosilo Misijonske Znamkarske Akcije, ki bo to nedeljo, 12. marca, v župnijski dvorani pri Mariji Vnebovzeti. Kosilo bo obsegalo juho, govejo in kokošjo pečenko, prikuhe, solato, kavo in pecivo - vse to za $12 za odraslo osebo, in $6 za otroka. Kosilo boste lahko vzeli 'tudi domov in bo na razpolago od 11. ure dopoldne do l. ure popoldne. Gospodinje ste naprošene za domače pecivo.
Ves dobiček kosila gre v sklad za vse naše misijonarje, ki so raztreseni po svetu in rešujejo različne Probleme v njihovi okolici, ko iz ljubezni do bližnjega sejejo božje kraljestvo.
Da je res tako, potrjujejo došla pisma, polna hvaležnosti za vsak dar, ki jim omogoča nadaljevanje njihovega dela.
Celestinovi se je oglasil misijonar p. Martin Kmetec, ki deluje v Turčiji in piše:
“Spoštovana! Malo sem kasen z odgovorom, ker sem bil na moji prejšnji postojanki v Libanonu. Iskre-na vam hvala za pomoč, ki ste jo poslali. Naj Bog Povrne vam in vsem dobrotnikom. Vaša pomoč je ve-llkega pomena, saj tukaj ne dobimo niti toliko, da bi Preživeli ...
Lani smo imeli tri krste, letos je pet katehume-Jtov. ki se pripravljajo na krst. Katoliška cerkev se b°ri za preživetje, a upamo, da bo zapihal Sveti Duh ln bo več spreobrnitev. Naše delo je velikokrat upanje Proti upanju. Seme mora umreti, zato je velikokrat Pcuspeh, razne težave in nemoč, a Bog je gospodar Žetve.
Tukaj v skupnosti smo trije duhovniki. Eden je iz °niunije, drugi z Malte. Trudimo se, se dobro razu-•hemo in si delo razdelimo. Turščine sem se že pri-Vad11- da že lahko mašujem in pridigam. V vsakdanjem življenju se veliko srečujem z muslimani, neka-eri nas zelo spoštujejo, drugi prezirajo.
Naš škof, ki je vodil škofijo 20 let. Je šel v pokoj.

V Turčiji napadli slovenskega duhovnika
Rim (Delo. 12. febr.) -Štiri dni po uboju italijanskega misijonarja Andrea Santora v Trabzonu na severovzhodu Turčije, so 11. februarja v mali župniji Sveta Helena blizu Izmirja mladi muslimanski skrajneži napadli slovenskega duhovnika Martina Kmetca, ga tepli in davili ter mu grozili, da bodo pobili vse katoliške duhovnike.
49-letni Martin Kmetec, doma s Ptuja, deluje v minoritskem redu v Turčiji od leta 2001. Pred tem je bil po posvečenju vzgojitelj minoritskih se-meniščnikov v Ljubljani, Parizu in Libanonu.
Novico o napadu je sporočil apostolski vikar v Anatoliji, monsinjor Luigi Padovese, ki je že po umoru Andrea Santora opozarjal, da gre za fanatizem in ne za naključno nasilno dejanje. Santorove posmrtne ostanke so 11. februarja prepeljali v Rim in tam so bile naslednji dan pogrebne slovesnosti v baziliki Svetega Janeza v Lateranu.

Ko tvoje zaželimo si bližine, gremo tja v ta mirni kraj tišine. Tam srce se tiho zajoče, saj verjeti ono noče, da te več med nami ni.

Obletnica Slovenske demokratske stranke
SLS je 17. februarja v Ljubljani zaznamovala sedemnajsto obletnico ustanovitve. Šestnajstega februarja 1989 je bila namreč ustanovljena Socialdemokratska zveza Slovenije, njen prvi predsednik je posta! sindikalist France Tomšič.
Ljubljana (Demokracija. 23. febr. 2006) - Kasneje se je Socialdemokratska zveza Slovenije preimenovala v Socialdemokratsko stranko Slovenije, Tomšiča pa Je nasledil Jože Pučnik. Stranka v vstopila v koalicijo Demos, slednja pa Je zmagala na volitvah leta 1990.
Po padcu Demosove vlade spomladi leta 1992 je Pučnik postal podpredsednik prehodne Drnovškove vlade, istega leta je SDSS (kasneje je skrajšala ime na SDS) doživela poraz na volitvah, a je vseeno vstopila v Drnovškovo vlado skupaj s Slovenskimi krščanskimi demokrati. Stranki so se tedaj pridružili nekateri člani nekdanje Slovenske demokratične zveze, med njimi tedanji obrambni minister Janez Janša, ki Je na kongresu leta 1993 postal novi predsednik SDS.
Leto dni kasneje je bil s konstruktom “Depala vas" odstranjen z obrambnega ministrstva, stranka pa je vstopila v opozicijo in dobila veliko novih privržencev. Spomladi leta 2000 Je za kratek čas spet postala vladna stranka v vladi Andreja Bajuka, po volitvah istega leta pa je znova pristala v opoziciji in ostala oster kritik vladavine LDS. V tem času se je preimenovala v Slovensko demokratsko stranko in pripravila nov program, s katerim Je na volitvah leta 2004 premagala LDS, Janša pa je postal predsednik vlade.
Na proslavi je slavnostni govornik Janez Janša ocenil, da bi utegnila SDS ostati na oblasti toliko časa, kot je bila v opoziciji. Po njegovih besedah bo SDS ostala stranka zmerne sredinske usmeritve, zavezana načelom trajnostnega razvoja, slovenske identitete, slovenske kulture, inovacij, znanja in solidarnosti.

Tik pred mojim odhodom je bil še grozovit umor, ki bo brez doma imel svoje posledice za pravosodje in pravosodne uslužbence, ker gre za ubijalca, ki je zaradi “le-galističnih okoliščin" ostal na svobodi potem, ko je moril v Srbiji in je bil prijet šele, ko se je spet spozabil v Sloveniji
“Kalejdoskop” je ustvarjen, kako ga bo usoda sukala, še ni jasno, nejasno ostaja tudi končna podoba slovenske družbe. Prvo odločujočo napoved bodo prinesle parlamentarne volitve leta 2008. Sedanja slovenska vlada ima namreč predvsem "prehodni" mandat, z vo-
litvami leta 2008 pa si bo - tako upajmo - priborila zmago v tej “bitki za dušo Slovenije”. S tem bi/bo narod dokončno odvrnila od kvarnih posledic “socialističnega eksperimenta” preteklosti.

Pogreb je bil 1. marca v oskrbi Želetovega zavoda, kjer so bili pogrebni obredi, sledil je pokop na Vernih duš pokopališču.

Umrla je 92 let stara Jean Champa, rojena Jerse, vdova po Franku, mati Mary S. Spalding, 2-krat stara mati, 3-krat prastara mati, sestra Josephine Zakrajšek. Pogreb je bil 25. februarja s sv. mašo v cerkvi St. Bede the Venerable v Mentorju.

Anton Žakelj
Anton Žakelj se je rodil v Stari vasi pri Žireh 13. junija 1907 Antonu in Mariji Žakelj. V družini je bilo šest fantov in dve dekleti. Tone je bil drugi po starosti. Osnovno šolo je obiskoval v Žireh, nato pa odšel v realko v Idrijo. Prva svetovna vojna je razmere močno spremenila in Tone se je lotil čevljarske obrti. Učil se je pri očetu, ki je bil čevljarski mojster, in delal z njim sedem let. Ta poklic mu ni bil posebno pri srcu, zato ga je opustil in šel v 2-letno Zadružno šolo v Ljubljani. Po njenem uspešnem zaključku je dobil službo v pisarni čevljarske zadruge v Žireh, kjer je ostal do leta 1943. Poleg tega je vodil tudi Mlekarsko zadrugo.
V letih druge svetovne vojne je revolucija segla tudi v žirovski kot. Toneta Žaklja so prijeli Nemci z več drugimi za talca, da bi se varno umaknili iz Žirov. Ko je bil umik končan, brez napada, v miru, so Nemci talce izpustili. Par mesecev nato so Toneta nasilno mobilizirali partizani, pa se je izmaknil in odšel v Kranj, kjer je delal pri žirovskih čevljarjih in bil knjigovodja njihove delavne skupnosti. Maja 1945 se je z drugimi napotil preko Ljubelja na Koroško.
Z njim je odšlo v tujino tudi njegovo dekle Cilka Košir iz nove vasi pri Žireh, s katero se je poročil v taborišču Judenburg leta 1946. S starejšim sinom Janezom sta Anton in Cilka Žakelj zapustila begunsko življenje na Koroškem in se podala v ZDA na Willard v Wisconsinu, kjer sta ostala pol leta. Od tam so se preselili v Cleveland, kjer je Anton dobil prvo zaposlitev v znani Ziherlovi tovarni, nato pa pri Risherju. Otroci Janez, Tone, Jože in Marija so odrasli, doštudirali in šli v življenje, oče Anton pa je v letu 1971 stopil v pokoj.
Pokoj zanj ni bilo brezdelje. Anton je bil član KSKJ št. 172, AMLA št. 14, in več drugih društev in ustanov. Imel je obilo dela in skrbi s svojim domom na 5516 Carry Avenue, veliko je bral in pisal, dokler je le mogel. Svoje doživljaje in izkušnje je opisal v mnogih člankih, v angleščini med drugim v Ameriški Domovini pod naslovom “Life in the Refugee Camps”, “Starting Over in America”, in druge spise. Nekateri spisi so dobljivi na spletni strani www.zakeljdiary.s5.com. Mnogi so bili objavljeni tudi v Sloveniji v Žirovskem občasniku in drugje.
Tonetova ljubljena žena Cilka je umrla 19. marca 2004. Poročena sta bila skoro 58 let. Življenje brez
Cilke je bilo za Toneta zelo težko. Novembra 2004 se je preselil v St. Vitus Village, kjer je našel prijetno slovensko družbo. Njegova življenjska pot se je končala 13. januarja 2006 v starosti 98 let v zavodu Grande Pointe, blizu Clevelanda. Pokopan je bil 17. januarja na pokopališču Vernih duš (see. 26, lot 1395).
Pokojnega je v bolezni redno obiskoval in mu prinašal tolažila sv. vere č. g. Jože Božnar. On je tudi vodil molitve in opravil vse pogrebne obrede v pogrebnem zavodu, v cerkvi in na pokopališču. Za vse, posebno pa za njegovo lepo pridigo med pogrebno sv. mašo, se mu iskreno zahvaljujemo. Hvaležni smo tudi g. Janezu Sršenu, ki je vodil krasno slovensko petje cerkvenega zbora, ter tudi organistu Frank Coffelt.
Toplo zahvalo naj prejmejo sorodniki, ki so nosili krsto: Tony, Joe in Christopher Žakelj, Lojze Mihelčič, Matt Plečnik in John Watkins.
Enako se zahvaljujemo vsem, ki so darovali rože, denar za dobre namene in maše, kakor tudi vsem, ki so prišli blagega pokojnika kropit ali ga spremljali v cerkev ali na pokopališče.
Zahvaljujemo se tudi Ameriški Domovini, ki je tako lepo objavila žalostno vest in gospodoma Ovseniku in Mejaču za po radiu razglašeno novico o smrti našega blagega pokojnika.
Naša zahvala velja vsem, ki so nam na kakršenkoli način izrazili svoje sožalje in sočustvovali z nami. Tistim, katerih naslove smo vedeli, smo razposlali zahvalne kartice, tiste, ki takih kartic niso prejeli, pa prosimo, naj vzamejo to našo objavo kot da bi bila prav njim namenjena.
Končno se zahvaljujemo Zak pogrebnemu zavodu za skrbno postrežbo in strokovno vodenje pogrebnih svečanosti, St. Denis Party Center pa za odlično pogostitev na pogrebščini.
Ljubljeni ata, brat in stari ata! Čeprav Tvoja ločitev ni prišla nenadoma, nas je Tvoj odhod bridko prizadel-Vse svoje življenje si žrtvoval za nas in vse trplljenje potrpežljivo prenašal, zato trdno upamo, da že uživat pri Bogu s Tvojo ljubo Cilko večno plačilo. Mi borno molili zate in te spominjali, dokler se spet ne združimo pri Bogu.
