We recall how in our school days we denied ourselves the pleasure of candy, or hew we gave up amusements, such as shows; in our maturer years we associate Lent with fasting, the foregoing of dancing and the like. Yet is this all Lent should mean io us? On Ash Wednesday, as he put ashes on our forehead, the priest said, "Remember that dust thou art, and to dust thou shalt return!" What an awful pronunciation to make upon mortal man. But to us Catholics it gives a promise of eternity; we know the words refer only to our material self, the body, and not to the soul, the indestructible masterpiece of God. Then if the soul's destiny is eternity, let us devote more time to its promotion and help it attain a higher place in the hereafter. How can we do this? During Lent special services are held. We should attend these Lenten sermons and Stations of the Cross faithfully. Lis ten to the words of the sermon and the next day instead of frivolous talking at our work lejt us thought fully digest the ideas conjured by the sermon. In the Way of the Cross let us not blindly and mechanically follow the words of the priest or of our prayer book; but let us really accompany Christ on His terrible journey to Calvary. Let us walk by His side and comfort Him. Imagine Him to be your best friend undergoing the cruel scourging, or falling under the burdensome cross, or the painful meeting with His mother, or the actual crucification. What would you say to your friend? Say it to Christ, comfort Him; He is your best and most loyal Pal! Services will beheld on Wednesdays and Fridays at 7:15 p. m. On the former day sermons will be given, and on the latter, the Way of the Cross will be recited. "GOLGOTHA" Here is our last call for the wonderful talking picture of the Life of Christ. This picture is a new talkie called "Golgotha." It will be shown in the school hall on Monday, March 7, and Wednesday. March 9, at 7:45 p. m. Admission tickets are only 25c and can be purchased from the school children, from Sodalists, and at Novak's Confectionery at Norwood and St. Clair. The movie is appropriate for the Lenten Season and it will be well worth your while to see it. OREL MEETING Thursday; March 10, is the monthly Orel meeting. We are again planning on having something different. This time it will be a ping pong tournament. Now don't let that scare you—even if you never have played it. You will have a chance to win, for you may draw a good partner. Those who are good may also draw a poor partner and so everything will be even. So do not forget to come and join in the ping pong tournament. Other games, such as cards, will also be available. Remember the Orel meeting, Thursday, March 10th at 8:30 p. m. Refreshments will be available. OREL BOWLING And again our bowling Sunday is here. Yes, it is on Sunday, March 13, at the St. Clair-Eddy alleys, E. 123 and St. Clair Avenue. Come and tune up for plans are in the making for an Orel tournament in April. So be there Sunday, March 13th at 1:00 p. m. sharp. "ONE MAD NIGHT" The St. Vitus Dramatic Guild is pleased to announce that its next English play will be the three-act farce "One Mad Night." From time to time we will inform you of the development of the plot and introduce some of the characters. The cast includes seven female and seven male roles. Remember the play, "One Mad Night," and watch for the various announcements. OBSERVATIONS! "Micki je treba moža" certainly turned out to be one rioting comedy, that had great appeal to the old folks and to the young ones too. Here's to your grand success "Illirija"! . . . and how many of you missed the Pre-Lenten Dance given by the Young-Ladies Sodality . . . boy what a nice ciowd they drew ... so sociable and friendly . . . many new • faces were seen too—may they come again . . . Did you see Stan Brodnik lead the "Big Apple." crowd through their antics . . . oh—anything for a good time. Father Andel and his boys were again on hand—good old faithful crowd ... one of our number, Alma Grill, who gets cheated on her Birthdays, was remembered by her friends, though, as she celebrated at the dance ... no February 29th this year but celebrate she must and from the news we get she did—and now we leave to you pecple the news of many so-called engagements recently springing up. We have begun to wonder why no names are given out but all that the folks say is, "Everybody's getting married!" so why not me! So folks if you have any info on this mystery we'd be glad to get it. Its got us jittery. Beseeinya. MONTHLY MEETINGS Tuesday night the Holy Name Society will hold its monthly :neeting. Although Fr. Hodous was scheduled to speak, this attraction has been postponed because of the Jesuit's busy schedule. JUNIOR JOURNAL Juniors to Hear Noted Benedictine Thursday Reverend Augustine La Marche, O. S. B., professor of Religion and English also dramatics director at Benedictine High, will honor the Junior Holy Name boys at the March meeting by an interesting and instructive talk on topics boys like to hear. He is already known in this parish, because he lead one of our own boys, Lawrence Bandi, to the Order of St. Benedict Monastery in Colorado. Our drama fans were thrilled by his production of the comedy "Blue Ghost" last year. I guarantee you will get many a hearty laugh from his witty humor and also derive a lot of benefit from his wise sayings. Baseball is just around the corner and many Juniors with the feeling of Spring are longing for a good sock at the old ball. This summer the Juniors are looking forward to a lot cf fun in a well organized league, in which there will be plenty of equally divided competition. In our March meeting this Thursday at 7:00, baseball plans will be discussed and studied. Come down with some ideas and make yourself useful to your club .If we clear up some work on this baseball question Thursday, we can swing into action with a baseball bat on one of the local diamonds early this June, Juniors. Anthony Zorko: NOTE: This is another in a series of articles that were written by Anthony Zorko. We publish them with special permission of his mother, Mrs. Jennie Zorko. There healthful sports- that graced the peaceful scene, Lived in each nook, and brightened all the green; Oh! How I miss those days of '29, when elementary school still was a child's paradise of joy and fun, when teachers were more lenient, and parents of a more understanding nature! Recently I had the sad experience of seeing something essential lost from the lives of the boys and girls in the elementary school which I formerly attended. It happened in this manner. I was in the vicinity of the school playground during one noon-hour and, because I had also noticed it before, I remarked to several of the eight-grade fellows that I never saw or heard of their playing "drop-three" and "maps." Well, the story finally came out. It seems that a couple of years after my class had graduated a new regime was inaugurated with the introduction of a new principal. She had strictly prohibited the playing of any suchi games that took the children out of the immediate neighborhood. Thought for the Week THOU ART DUST . . . One of the important and significant days to Catholics everywhere is Ash Wednesday which marks the beginning of the Lenten Season. This season is especially set aside to remind all Catholics that repentence for wrongdoings is necessary. "Ash Wednesday" this week began the current Lenten season and Catholics everywhere were present at churches for the age-old ceremony of marking the forehead with a pinch of ashes in the form of a cross, and while doing this the priest says, "Remember man, that thou att dust and unto dust thou shalt return." How much that statement bears upon the lives of each of us can not easily be explained. Indeed, the truth of it has not been questioned, but the significance of its place in religion and the conduct of our lives is a very g^ave and vital one. Indeed, so grave was the problem to our Lord that he came upon this Earth and suffered as a man for our sakes. Yes, for the eternal salvation of "our Souls" which are embodied in the physical forms that are but dust and which shall return to dust. The ''Soul" however,—it is most important to remember—has been given by God, and to Him it must return. How the "Soul" has carried out the work designated for it by God is left to each of us to guide. When once "our day" .has come, and the Soul returns to Gcd, while the body is laid in Mother Earth to again become dust, we shall be made accountable for all the days spent here on Earth. it is for this reason that Our Lord fasted forty days—in repentence for the sins of all of us and finally giving up his Sacred Life for cur Redemption. During Lent let us remember the importance of doing some penance—and what great benefit it shall be to our Spiritual life. —LEXICUS LENTEN PRACTICES The season of Lent is universally recognized not only by Catholics but by Christians everywhere. To the pos- sessors of the true faith, we "Catholics" have been given an especial understanding cf the significance of this period of the religious calendar. The rules and regulations for observing the Lenten Fast and Abstinence has been sufficiently circulated to make all familiar with these rules. It is important that all those bound shall observe them. Some persons say "Aw, its hard." Now, isn't it just too bad. A little sacrifice on our pait is asking too much. Really we should endeavor to observe the rules and regulations for Lent and in addition we should find some other means of doing additional repentence. Give up your dancing, candy, or dessert. Each person can find something which may be a sacrifice to give up, but isn't it worth every bit of it when one realizso the benefits awaiting us in the world to come. "Penance" for our sins shall be exacted and what is better than that we do something voluntarily during the period of Lent at least to appease the great wrongdoings committed against God. Lets us each pick out some practice for pur special Lenten devotion and at least for the season of Lent turn our thoughts fiom the "World of Today" tc the "Eternity of Tomorrow." iTd anything cUan be expe ed. The' Now, I do not bemoan the fate re-^hts ^vilf take place in Pa regulation suiting^ -- t^^nncipaTs ^decree, age, but I do regret to see the passing of the rough-and-ready youth to the sissified bunch of today. In those days "drop-three" and "maps" were games that required a great deal of courage on the part of the boy, not so much because they are hard games to play, but because the effects of such games called down the wrath and ire of teachers and parents alike. At 11:30 our noon-day recess began. It was an unwritten law that the gang of fellows return to school by noon. Approximately a few minutes after the hour; the fellow who was "it" from the previous day called the game, and we began to scatter. A radius of one mile in any direction away from the school was the limit that governed the game. Generally the gang broke up into two groups, each going in its own direction. When the fellow who was- "it" came into ring with the usual rules. Whitey also claims an M. D. should be available to examine his fighters. So we •would like to hear from any of our local Medics who would offer to act in this capacity. Because of the large crowd expected the scene of this show has been shifted from the school to our new church basement so that we can accomodate all who come. Members will receive their tickets at the general meeting. The show will take place April 5, promptly at 8 o'clock. PAMPHLET RACK With Lent already here, the pamphlet rack has on display several appropriate booklets for the Holy Season. Booklets on special prayers, stations, the passion, and general spiritual readings are in order. Get a copy tomorrow. Make it a Lenten resolution—I'll read a pamphlet a week. sight, we all scattered in various directions. By the time the one-o'clock bell rang we were all pretty well tired and steaming hot. We would seldom have known that the bell rang, but one fellow in the neighborhood screamed the information to the member nearest the school, who in turn let the others in on the information. The afternoon session of school nev er really amounted to much, simply because we were unable to expend any more energy. Wiping perspiration from the face was one task that engaged every fellow for some time. Wondering what the folks would say abcut the dirty shoes and clothes was another worry that haunted us until dismissal bell. With this passing of the tougher element has also vanished the young man's opportunity in the open air and field. The WPA at Ivanhoe and Euclid Ave. has made many a lad yearn for the fun of yesterday. The construction of Belvoir Blvd, through this area of Nela Park and Nine-mile Creek has destroyed the woods to the wanderings of young and enterprising explorers. Well I remember how often several of us went through the woods after school and on Saturday mornings to reach "the quarries" where we could swim "bare skin." And then, when the first violets came out, how we enjoyed gathering a bunch of them to take home. The first jack-in-the-pulpit and mayflower were prizes worth more than any amount of money. The story we had built up around a little shack in the woods had assumed alarming proportions—in our minds it was the home of a number of witches who made no pretense of snaring young ME YOUNGER SET AT ST. LENTEN DEVOTIONS Special devotions shall be had during the Lenten Season each Wednesday and Friday evening. Attend these special devotions and benefit spiritually from the discourses that shall be made and also by attending the Stations of the Cross devotions. The practice of participating in Lenten Devotions is a highly recommended one, for it aids one in getting the true feel of the Lenten Season. STATION YLS Hello, Scdalists! Here; is your cub reporter with a few little snatches gathered here and there at our Pre Lenten Dance! To begin with, March 1, was election day, and we had to sweep cut the Board, before we could usher in our guests! But what a GRAND EVENING! We had a capa city crowd, all of whom were down right sociable! Thanks to the Holy Name boys, they showed up in fine style. Cur own Ilirija favored us with a few sele'ctions now and then, you knpw, a chirp, chirp here and a chirp, chirp there! The Big Apple came to be quite the nuts around 0141' staid School Hall; Stanley Brodnik made a good maestro! Right up his alley, I believe! Talk about coiffures! Those Pintar sisters sure can think up more novel things to do with a few strands cf beautiful' tresses. Sophie Chapic is hereby gtven a great big bouquet for the time and effort she axpended cn this affair! The Tomazic and As-seg sisters are to be congratulated on their interior decorating scheme. By the by, did any of you see our Prexy, Jo Zulich? I do declare she was flitting around just like the proverbial butterfly and I most sincerely want tc mention her color! (Lovely as a rcse, just about describes it!) Our cheerfully busy Refreshment Chair-lady, Dorothy Trobentar, was initiated into her position this evening and quite ably did she fulfill her duties! Thanks to all the girls who volun-tarilly helped in the Check Room! We had a number of late comers namely Rev. Fr. Andel arid the fellows from Holy Family, Johnny Ter-cek, our politically inclined supporter, Genevieve Zulich, and Charles Susa. I heard from reliable sources that they all enjoyed themselves and were indeed sorry that they hadn't come a wee bit earlier! Well, I guess this will suffice for the present. The Dance was an overwhelming success and in the name of the Young Ladies' Scdality I thank all who attended and also all who helped put it across! Now for something of ' another nature. * A group of our Sodalists visited the Old Folks' Home last Sunday. I for cne am sorry that I had to miss this opportunity. The girls told me just abcut enough to start me wondering about getting a first hand look into this institution. For the time being then, I shall let this matter entirely alone! On second thought, I believe I shall ask one of these visitors to favor us with a report, that I shall pass on to you. Good idea, eh, what?! Tomorrow is our Sodality Sunday girls! Remember our Perfect Attendance! We are to receive at the 8 o'clock Mass in a body! See you there! MISSION Whether you are young or old, regardless cf what set you may belong to, life has its serious and lighter moments. It has its material and spiritual sides and values. Lent, among true and sincere Christians, has ever been set aside for at least a little serious thinking. In general, that's just what missions are supposed to do; make us meditate on mor« permanent values of life, lead us to consider its spiritual opportunities and import. This time our missionary is Father Joseph McQuade, great preacher with a wealth of experience and grown grayhaired in missionary activities. He cannot but please the most fastidious and choic.v. His opening sermons will be delivered tomorrow at the 8:30 and 9:45 Masses. You are all invited to come to one of these as well as to other-services, instructions and mission exercises which will be announced in detail by him. Neither you, nor anyone else can know whether this may be the last call to you to make a mission, that eleventh hour call to work in the vineyard of the Lord for the benefit of your soul. Who knows! It's a terrible thought to think that some would have to regret throughout eternity, that they did not heed this call. Come and bring your friends along. A kind word from you will bring them quicker than all our announcements. Nor does it make any difference whether they are Catholics or net. There are still in our district many adults who were baptized because their parents used to be Catholics, but who never had a chance to learn the truths and hear of the beauty of the religion of their forefathers. If such is your friend, mission is the very thing to which to bring him, or her. NO GYM NEXT WEEK Due to mission devotions every night all boys and girls interested in basketball activities are asked to remember that there will be no gym sessions or games until following week. Ash Wednesday, was the first of the forty days of the Lenten fast pre-boys just our age. The numerous ceecling- Easter. The Lenten fast dates squirrels and "rabbits that crossed our back to the earliest days of the path are gone today, and with their church, though not in its present passing something has gone out of the lives of the young men that will never return. Ferhaps some of this sounds silly and sentimental, but I am of the opinion that if more of this kind of life was shown to the young man of today there would be less of hanging around on corners and frequenting of theatres. It did not cost the gang j anything for this sort of fun, while today the children spend their dimes and nickels on movies and other forms of artificial amusement. Yesterday we lived a life in the raw— today it is a life of artificial ease and pleasure, DEADLINE NOTE ;; All copy intended for ;; this page should reach the ;; office of the publishers not ;; later than THURSDAY ;; NOON. Whatever.the duration of the fast in the early Church, it is clear that it was considered obligatory. Lent now starts on Ash Wednesday and ends at noon on Holy Saturday after the Mass of the Resurrection. It is the season when we beg God's mercy and do penance for our sins. Penance is that virtue by which we destroy sin in ourselves and make reparation to God for our offenses against Him. As sin has an interior and exterior' element, namely the turning cf the will away from God and the.seeking of created things in place of God, so the satisfaction for sin, namely by penance, must have a double element, botty interior and exterior. Interior penance is necessary for salvation when we have sinned grievously against God. It consists in satisfaction for our sins by acts of contrition and the firm purpose of amendment. External penance consists in the satisfaction we make to God for our wilful misuse of creatures and of our- external senses. Where sin gave bodily pleasure, sonor external penance inflicts pain or privation in reparation for those forbidden pleasures. We should strive to make this Holy season mean this and more to us! SHE GOT HIM! So she finally got him! It was the largest audience in the history of the Slovenian National Home to witness such an aifair. Some time before 7:30 p. m. the SRO sign was hung cut. The wise ones were there an hour before the scheduled time. An audience that was composed of friends from Newburg, St. Clair, Euclid, and from out Lorain. Everyone left the hall well-satisfied, cares discarded and in a jovial mood. All this proves more so that "We are Slovenes" as Mr. Rakar puts it. We wish to thank every one who made up that splendid audience. To our friend, Jaka, and to his paper, The American Home, we extend our thanks and are most grateful to you The same goes to our electricians John Kogoy, and Bill Planinšek, as well as to all other members of the choir who aided whole-heartedly, although they themselves did not take part in the actual performance but nevertheless helped to make "Micki je treba moža" a grand success. "Hvala" to our associate memDers, Mr, Louis Šimenc and of course, Jaka, for the publicity. Although "Urša" got all the "živijo's" etc., for the "polna miza" it would not have been quite so "polna" if it were not for Mrs, Izanc who was the real "kuharica" behind the scenes. Ushers, please accept our thank you. And also all ethers who had in some way taken seme of the load off our shoulders. POSTLUDE: Jaka, did you hear Repla, Sunday? THAT CHAIN PRAYER! The chain letter is making its rounds again. The latest is a prayer to the Little Flower, St. Therese, supposedly approved by the Sisters of St. Francis and purported to have begun in 1903. The facts are as follows: the Catholic Church never has and never will give her approval to such a nonsensical superstition; secondly St. Therese had not been canonized in 1903 and therefore was not venerated publicly; thirdly the Franciscan Sisters never recommended such an un-Catholic devotion; fourthly, it is silly to believe that the saints in heaven are capable of harming anyone who does not pray to them; fifthly, every such letter should be relegated to the waste-paper basket. Let's do a little arithmetic! ff one person sends out five copies of this letter to five friends within 4 days and requests them to do the same; within 52 days there will be one billion, two hundred million, seven hundred and three thousand copies circulated throughout the country. At this rate each person in the United States would have received ten copies of this chain letter. Somebody must be breaking the chain since this writer has not received -even one copy of the letter.
