This is also why I am answering Mr. Rucigay’s invitation. I am quite satisfied and can harbor no doubt whatsoever about his good faith and intentions. I am certain that he sincerely and simply speaks out his mind about what he believes in and makes charges he considers justified. He, however, does not keep in mind that following the war, copying general war-time Partisan manners, a brutal, totalitarian, Communist regime was established in Yugoslavia, Slovenia included. The regime had its own concentration camps e.g. Stemtal in Slovenia, Goli otok in Dalmatia. It had suppressed in a most brutal way any possible opposition to its established power. The Church and freedom of opinion were a matter of its special persecution. All these are facts Mr. Rucigay cannot possibly deny. In those circumstances any expression of truth in opposition to its official versions was severely penalized. Only government’s “truths” or “facts” were allowed to be spread in public or be filtered to the outside world. In this way the line between the stark reality and the overwhelming, glorious official fictions became completely blurred, the picture of reality slowly sinking with the flood of official versions. The brainwash was absolute. A thaw in these restrictions has begun only a few years ago. It is for this reason that I question Mr. Rucigay’s — certainly not his good faith or his intentions as I have said before, but the grade of his credibility about the situation in Slovenia during the war. For I’ve “been there” during the entire war, constantly in touch with Slovenian reality, twice in a fascist prison, once — as Domobranec — severely wounded in my fight against the vernacular terror of Slovenian Partisans. He also has “been there” but for a few weeks only, as he says, escorted by (not admittedly) Communist-Partisans or interpreters of the same feather, in the midst of a captive population supposedly “liberated” by the forces led in a totalitarian way by political commisars. The captive people could neither communicate with him in English nor would dare even in dreams to spell out the conditions of their “liberation.” I therefore sincerely believe that Mr. Rucigay’s credibility about the war situation in Slovenia has been, he unwilling, impaired by his ingenuity or has been partially tainted by such unfortunate circumstances. His experience and mine do not rest on the same foot. Thus, a serious dialogue is not possible. Between the two levels of credibility it would only lead to continuous polemics based on misconceptions or misunderstandings. I believe, nonetheless, that such a dialogue is quite feasible. This may be a very long shot, but Mr. Rucigay has only to proceed to some thorough personal soul-searching and find among the facts, “facts” or hearsay about wartime Slovenia his answers to the following questions: 1) Does he sincerely believe that the dawn of truth about Slovenia during and after the war, mirrored recently on the English pages of American Home, including this letter, maybe called an expression of “hatred?” 2) Does he sincerely believe that “documentation” published during communist tyranny in Slovenia about its wartime history is a real reflection of veracity and does not hide the truth? 3) Does he sincerely believe, that being in Partisan hands he was bound to be shown or told everything about their atrocities, while they kept mum to their own people? My own answer to these three questions is negative. I am really afraid that Mr. Rucigay’s positive answer to any of the above questions would preclude the possibility of a forthcoming sincere dialogue. It would only present a chasm between the different levels of credibility and would only lead to heated polemics. Yet by now and outside Slovenia the era of polemics about wartime Slovenia is over. It is its historic reality that counts from now on. Mr. Rucigay’s letter, although involuntarily, follows in a way the line of character assassination drive about Domobranci. The bodies of Partisans’ victims, unarmed, naked and massacred have been thrown providently underground half a century ago. But, in Kočevski Rog, Teharje and other places, they were but physically assassinated. Their character assassination, especially in the eyes of the Allies was bound to follow to exculpate those massacres. Here lies the difference between the Nazi and the Communist massacres. The Nazis tried the character assassination of Jewish people in advance, the communists have been using it after massacres of their victims. —Frank K. Many of the other airlines are saying that airlines like Southwest do not pay for the reservation service used to book flights or other things, but on the other hand, they run a good airline with enthusiastic people. Just the other day I experienced the difference that fte people in Southwest make. After a flight to Phoenix, Arizona, as I was driving away from the airport, I suddenly realized that I had left a roll of prints in the overhead compartment of the Southwest airplane that I had just left. I turned around and drove back to the airport, went to the baggage service counter well after midnight and told them of my dilemma. The prints were for a program the next morning. The airplane had already been moved to a location away from the gate, but one of their people volunteered to take a truck to the plane and recover my package. Within a few minutes I had my package. He said he was happy to help me and I felt he really meant it — it was nice to find that kind of person he was — an indication of what made Southwest different — again, it was the people of Southwest. The Hubs and Spokes The system of hubs established by the airlines has certainly made it harder to get anywhere in the United States in a reasonable amount of time. I live at the end of one of the spokes of the airlines concept of hubs — Rochester, New York. To go anywhere in the country from Rochester requires at least one stop at a hub and often a full day of travel. The real question is, have the airlines gained that much with their hubs? Cities that once had hubs, such as Dayton and Cleveland, Ohio, have lost part of their hubs and today are suffering with over-built airports. New airports, like the new Denver airport, are a technological nightmare and may be a real challenge to pay for. Maybe we will see an airline that will be smart enough to look at the passengers flying from Point A to Point B and put in direct flights. Even if you live in New York City, your flight will probably stop in Detroit, Chicago, or Pittsburgh to get to Denver, Los Angeles, or San Francisco. The Knee-O-Meter With my 6’6” frame, the airplanes flying today can sometimes be a real challenge if you are flying anywhere but first class or business class. In an effort to push the revenue of each plane, the seats have become closer and closer. My knee-o-meter tells me quickly when an aircraft has been reconfigured to squeeze a little more space for another row of seats. Occasionally, the spacing is so bad that if the person in front of me reclines his seat at all, I feel I might lose a kneecap. We are promised a whole new generation of airplanes with all sorts of new devices like call-forwarding to your seat, multichannel television for viewing, and even a move back to more 2-engine airplanes with the advent of the new 777 plane from Boeing. Strike One Then there are the occasional strikes that create pandemonium among the passengers. I can remember one strike where pickets marched in front of the doors of the airport, but when they saw me coming, the pickets said, “Oh, there’s Mr. Larish, let him through.” They recognized me as a regular passenger who was important to their future — strike or no strike. Those people are fighting for what they believe is right, but they didn’t forget the people who paid the bills. That Special Moment And there are the moments that are special like when your granddaughter meets you coming off the plane and runs to give you a hug and is surprised when you present her with a bouquet of flowers that you brought all the way from California. She turned to all the people around and said, “My grandpa brought me flowers!” There is no doubt that the airlines have changed our world. Today, we think nothing of going halfway around the world, spending a day at a meeting, and then flying on to another location. This may be the mark of the jetsetter. For most people, there is the need to smell the flowers. For me it was once fun to fly — now it is work. Most of the time, I have my notebook computer out and am catching up with mail, writing an article that is overdue, or creating notes or slides for that next presentation. Would I change my style? No, I can reach more people than ever before in a shorter time than ever before. I can speak in Tokyo one day, report on a conference in Europe a day or so later, and then be back to make a presentation or teach a class in the United States or Canada. I have been asked, “When are you going to retire?” Probably not ’til the people in the seat next to me on the airplanes are no longer interesting and different. When will that be? Probably not ’til the rocking chair gets me. Roses for My Rose There is one nice thing about traveling. You get the chance to find things to bring home. Maybe it is an oversize chessboard from Iran, or a wood statue from South Africa. I really enjoy treating my wife, Rose Ellen, to bouquets of 100 miniature roses that 1 find in Los Angeles. More than one cabin attendant has admired them hoping for part of a bouquet. I wish I could give them one, but they are for that special person who waits for me at home. A Million American Airline Miles A short time ago, American Airlines acknowledged my travel on their line by sending me a special million mile card. The card arrived just as I was in the final stages of completing this little book. I hope that those of American Airlines who have been so good to me will know that I appreciate their gesture. The Next Time You Fly To all the wonderful people who have been in the seat next to me — thank you for sharing so much. For some, it was their families, others their businesses and ideas that were worth their weight in gold. The next time you fly, look at the person in the seat next to you, smile, and get ready for one of the most enjoyable experiences of your life. In that issue, you again omitted some of the journalistic Ws. You write about the fact that Slovenian-English dictionaries are needed, but you neglect to tell the reader where such dictionaries might be sent. I have a spare, and would be willing to part with it. Mr. Majerle also alludes to the fact that the paper publishes many local stories. Giving it the “clubby” feel. I realize, that there are not too many people around who could provide more stories for you. I always read the information submitted by the South Florida Slovenian Club, hoping to read of someone from the old neighborhood. My objective for subscribing to your paper was to improve my language skills. It (the paper) is not fulfilling these objectives. Omenjeni poslanci so Školča obdožili, da je kršil poslovnik državnega zbora, ko na eni preteklih sej ni dovolil vsem prijavljenim poslancem pravico govoriti med razpravo o razrešitvi takratnega ministra za gospodarske dejavnosti Maksa Tajnikarja. Predlog je podprlo le 19 poslancev, Proti jih je bilo 38. Vlogžena je tudi interpelacija proti zunanjemu ministru Zoranu Thalerju, zopet s strani opozicijskih poslancev. Glasovanje o njem bo predvidoma čez nekaj tednov. špor zaradi stroškov papeževega obiska v zadnjem času razburja slovensko jav- nost spor med državo in Cerkvijo glede kritja nekaterih stroškov, povezanih z obiskom papeža Janeza Pavla II. v Slovenijo maja letos. Cerkveni predstavniki menijo, da mora biti spor uspešno razrešen vsaj do 20. marca, ko bo prišla vatikanska delegacija. Časopisna poročila o podrobnostih so na str. 11. Po vsej verjetnosti bo spor rešen s tem, da bodo s strani države odgovorni privolili v državno kritje stroškov, ki bodo nastali pri zagotavljanju papeževe varnosti. Vlada odobrila razne podražitve Pretekli teden je slovenska vlada privolila v razne podražitve. Vlada je podražila cene naftnih derivatov za 0,8 do 6,9 odstotka, cena električne energije pa je bila znižana glede na zimsko tarifo za 9,5 odstotka in ne za 16,6, kot bi se morala, to pa pomeni dejansko podražitev. Inflacija v februarja je bila 0,9-odstotna. Preiskava o procesu proti fetverici napreduje počasi Zadnja leta deluje posebna parlamentarna komisija, ki želi ugotoviti, ali je bilo pred osmimi teli takratno politično vodstvo Slovenije vpleteno v aretacijo Ikim. »četverice«. Eden od aretiranih je bil sedanji predsednik SDSS in bivši obrambni minister Janez Janša. Smole je trdil, da v slučaju, da bi se takratno politično hotelo znebiti opozicije, že ne bi začelo pri takih, kot je takrat bil Janez Janša. Takrat, je dejal Smole, Janša ni bil tako po-memben disident. Zato bi se partija prej zanimala za druge, pomembnejše osebnosti, kot so nili npr. dr. France Bučar, Tine in Spomenka Hribar, dr. Dimitrij Rupel. Janez Janša ni dolgo ostal dolžan ne Stanovniku ne Smoletu. Na tiskovni konferenci pretekli četrtek je dejal, da je Stanovnik preprosto lagal pred komisijo. Citiral je za primer Stanovnikovo izjavo iz junija 1988, ko je dejal za nek neslovenski časopis, da je bodočnost Slovenije le v enotni Jugoslaviji. O Smoletovih besedah glede Janševe takratne nepomembnosti, je Predsednik SDSS dejal: »Sprašujem se, zakaj nas je potem Udba zaprla? Sicer pa je tovrstne moletove in Stanovnikove izjave demantiral že Milan Kučan, ki je priznal obstoj magneto-• iz tacenske seje političnega vodstva, ko je med petimi notranjimi sovražniki omenil tudi me Janeza Janše.« Delo komisije se bo nadaljevala vsaj do letošnjih parlamentarnih volitev. »SLOVENSKA HIŠA« V ATLANTI — Fotografija kaže »Slovensko hišo«, razstavni prostor v mestu, kjer bodo letos potekale poletne olimpijske igre. Vendelin Spendov Lemontski odmevi.,. Osrednji Marijin praznik v marcu je 25. marca: Gospodovo oznanjenje, ko je božji angel prinesel Mariji sporočilo, da je izbrana za mater božjega Sina. Marija je v svoji skromnosti presenečena izrekla besede, ki jih ponavljamo v molitvi Angelovo češčenje: »Glej, dekla sem Gospodova, zgodi se mi po tvoji besedi«. V Sloveniji je ta praznik vedno veljal kot prvi pomladanski Marijin praznik in so ga temu primerno slovesno obhajali. Jožefovo, 19. marca, je drugi večji praznik tega meseca: sv. Jožef, mož Device Marije, spoznavalec in zavetnik vesoljne Cerkve. Na slovenskih tleh je bilo znano češčenje sv. Jožefa davno pred uvedbo njegovega praznika leta 1621. Na Slovenskem je bilo sv. Jožefu posvečenih 75 cerkva, kjer najdemo tudi mnoge umetniške upodobitve svetnika. Zato tudi skoraj ni bilo večje družine, da ne bi koga od otrok imenovali po tem svetniku. Cel mesec marec je letos v znamenju postnega časa, ki smo ga pričeli s pepelnico, 21. februarja. Zadnji dan marca je letos Cvetna nedelja, ko bomo obhajali Jezusov slovesni vhod v Jeruzalem. Hvalevredna slovenska tradicija za cvetno nedeljo so butarice, ki jih naše naselbine pa tudi posamezniki pripravljajo in nesejo v cerkev k blagoslovu. Pa poglejmo nekoliko nazaj. Letos nam od Božiča sem zima ni prizanesla. V naših krajih (Chicago z okolico) nismo dobili veliko snega, pa je zato mraz strupeno pritiskal. Hvaležni smo za vse darove, ki nam jih pošiljate za vzdrževanje, da smo imeli v samostanu toplo. Le cerkev je hladnejša, kakor cerkve na splošno. Zopet smo izgubili enega od patrov, tokrat p. Bonaventura Borgola, ki je umrl v Johns-townu (Pa.) 19. januarja 1996. Velik dobrotnik Lemonta Janez (John) Rems, iz Jolieta, je po dolgi in težki bolezni v nedeljo, 21. januarja 1996, umrl. Kot poklicen čebelar, je dolga leta skrbel tudi za čebele našega čebelnjaka, da je bilo vedno dovolj medu za »Medeni piknik« in za samostan. Janez Rems je bil globoko veren mož in zvest faran Sv. Jožefa v Jolietu. Rad pa je prihajal k Mariji Pomagaj v Le-montu. Zato sta tudi z ženo Margareto pred nekaj meseci obhajala slovesnost zlate poroke pri Mariji Pomagaj, ko "sta si med sv. mašo znova obnovila večno zvestobo. Bog jima je dal tri sinove, ki sta jih lepo vzgojila in v kolikor nam je znano, zvesto nadaljujejo očetovo in materino dediščino. Iskreno sožalje Vam, gospa Margareta in celi družini. Spominjamo se Vas v molitvah. Pokojni naj pa počiva v miru, v božji Luči! 23. januarja letos je p. Kalist Langerholz obhajal 85. rojstni dan. Še vedno je čil in zvesto skrbi za bolnike župnije Sv. Štefana v Chicagu. Sobratje smo se zbrali in mu čestitali, prav tako člani društev, ki jim je duhovni vodja. P. Kalist, Bog Vas živi in ohrani pri zdravju in v svoji milosti. Nekaj naših bralcev je izrazilo željo, da bi vsak mesec v tem članku objavili tudi rojstne dneve sobratov. Godove ste že podali, menijo, pa tudi pokojnih ste se spomnili. CLEVELAND, O. - Prenekatera beseda je bila že spregovorjena, prenekatera zapisana, kako ohraniti slovensko besedo in kulturo v zdomstvu, okolju ničkaj naklonjeno tej vrednoti in daleč proč od tam, kjer izhaja naš rod. LILIJA pa gre v tem korak dalje, saj nas leto za letom vabi na njene odrske prireditve, da tam prisluhnemo lepi slovenski besedi, ki se razliva z odra. Istočasno pa LILIJA tudi skrbi, da vedno vzgaja nove igralce, ki so pripravljeni ohraniti slovensko tradicijo še v bodoče. Prav je, da jim damo poguma pri njihovem prizadevanju in jih tudi podpremo. Na tiho nedeljo, 24. marca, bo LILIJA podala v Slovenskem domu na Holmes Avenue veseloigro »TROJČKI« in sicer ob 3.30 popoldne. Odzovimo se njih vabilu ter pojdimo na igro, tam bomo preživeli par ur v veseli družbi, se od srca nasmejali, ter pozabili svoje vsakdanje skrbi in težave. Naj Vam še zaupam, da je režija v rokah preizkušenega igralca in režiserja Srečka Gaserja. Pojdimo torej na igro - ne bo nam žal, saj bomo odhajali z zavestjo, da smo storili nekaj dobrega - podprli prizadevanja za ohranitev slovenske kulture. Anclev France _»POGLEDI«_ SEATTLE, Washington - Te dni nas je dosegla dvojna številka Pogledov (št. 4/5, Januar 1996), glasila raziskovalnega inštituta Studia Slovenka. Kot prejšnje tudi ta prinaša kopico poročil o delu slovenskih izseljencev in političnih beguncev. Ta številka nas opozori na življenje in delo Rude Jurčeca (1905-1975) in dr. Mihe Kreka (1897-1969), posebno na njuno delo v emigraciji. Beremo tudi odprto pismo, ki ga je dr. Ljubo Sire poslal predsednidu Izvršnega sveta Jugoslavije Mitji Ribičiču ob obisku Velike Britanije v februarju 1970; v njem predstavlja življenje in politično delo slovenskega partijskega voditelja. Razumljivo je, da je bil dr. Sire že zaradi tega v Titovi Jugoslaviji »neza-željen«. Naselbina slovenskih izseljencev v kraju Bruay v severozahodni Franciji je leta 1949 slavila 25-letnico svojega rudarskega društva. Ob tej priliki je društveni delavec Franc Simončič napisal pregled dela in življenja te naselbine. Rokopisno poročilo se je ohranilo in iz njega urednik povzema važnejše dogodke. Nadvse zanimiv je pregled dogodkov in reakcije izseljencev ob spreminjanju tamkajšnjih in zunanjih političnih razmer, od odnosov med Francijo in Nemčijo, do nemške okupacije, francoske osvoboditve, do 'repatriacije in delovanja nove Jugoslavije z emigranti. Več zapiskov se ukvarja s slovenskimi izseljenci v Združenih državah. Za zgodovino izseljenstva je novost poročilo o Vestniku, ki ga je v letih 1908-1909 v New Yorku izdajal Viktor J. Kubelka. Doslej je bila znana le naslovna stran osme številke drugega letnika, ki jo hranijo v emigrantskih arhivih v Minnesoti. Janez Arnež je očitno odkril še druge izvode, ker iz njih prinaša izvlečke o slovenskih izseljencih v New Yorku in Clevelandu, v Pueblu in Chicagu. Na novo je predstavljen list Slovenian Herald, ki je izhajal v letih 1953 in 1954 v Chicagu, najprej pod uredništvom Johna Kosa in kasneje dr. Ludvika Leskovarja. Ohranjeni izvodi kažejo, da je list nameraval informirati angleško govoreče naseljence o slovenskih problemih, predvsem o tržaškemu vprašanju. V Rimu je v marca 1946 začel izhajati kot razmnoženina Glas Jugoslavije. Prinašal je novice iz Jugoslavije in prevode člankov o Jugoslaviji, ki so izšli v tujini. Za zgodovino slovenske emigracije je predvsem gradivo objavljeno maja 1946, kjer obsoja gibanje za samostojno slovensko državo, ki so ga takrat v Rimu vodili dr. Ciril Žebot, kasnejši Cleve-landčan Jože Špindler in pisec Fran Erjavec. List je zagovarjal zedinjeno Jugoslavijo in je smatral vsako disidentsko delavnost kot škodljivo za slovensko emigrantsko skupnost. V Clevelandu je marsikdo poznal Zdravka Novaka in njegovo knjižnico. Pogledi nam prikažejo življenjsko delo pokojnega Novaka. Ves čas begunstva, od leta 1945 do svoje smrti leta 1971, je zbiral, hranil, registriral begunske tiske. Ko je prišel leta 1949 v Cleveland, je prinesel seboj dva zaboja knjig, revij in tiska-nin. Vsa kasnejša leta je zbirko dopolnjeval, po večini z nakupovanjem iz lastnega žepa. Zbirki je dal ime Slovenska zdomska knjižnica. Po dogovoru je celotno knjižnico in arhive naklonil slovenskemu zavodu Slovenik v Rimu. Nejasno je, na kakšen način je večji del zbirke v kasnejših letih izginil in je bil po vsej verjetnosti uničen. Ob tem se ponovno odpira vpašanje, kako zagotoviti o-hranjanje dokumentov slovenske emigrantske preteklosti. Marsikdo je v preteklosti in še danes naznanja, da zbira gradivo, malokdo lahko zagotovi, da bo gradivo ohranjeno. Pred skoro petdesetimi leti je bil v Slovenskem narodnem domu organiziran slovenski izseljenski muzej. Po kratkem navdušenju je zmanjkalo sredstev; zbirka je bila poslana v Ljubljano, kjer je zaradi malomarnosti večina gradiva propadla. Neznana je bodočnost bogate zbirke Slovenskega raziskovalnega centra, ki ga vodi prof. Edi Gobec. Mnogo clevelandskega gradiva je odšlo v Ljubljano z zbiralci in je ostalo v privatnih rokah. Slovenski krščanski demokratje vabijo! CLEVELAND, O. - Prihodnji teden se bo mudil med nami podpredsednik SKD za zamejstvo in izseljenstvo, prof. Tine Vivod iz Argentine. Zdelo se nam je primerno, da skličemo sestanek vseh članov in prijateljev Slovenskih krščanskih demokratov v Clevelandu in okolici, da g. prof. Vivodu razložimo in obenem izrazimo naše želje in naše skrbi glede bližajočih se volitev v Sloveniji- Prof. Tine Vivod bo tudi še obiskal kanadske Slovence in se potem udeležil kongresa Slovenske krščanske demokratske stranke v Sloveniji, ki se bo vršil koncem meseca marca. Kot podpredsednik stranke za izseljenstvo bo tako lahko v našem imenu predlagal morebitne prošnje ali predloge nas, ki živimo na tujem. Ta sestanek, na katerega vabimo vse člane in prijatelje SKD, da se ga če le morejo udeleže, bo v petek, 15. marca, ob sedmih zvečer, v šolski dvorani pri Mariji Vnebovzeti v Collinwoodu. Vabimo vse, katerim je bodočnost Slovenije pri srcu. Le po političnih poteh lahko upamo, da bo enkrat zavladala prava demokracija doma, in le po političnih poteh lahko mi zunaj vplivamo na razvoj demokracije doma. In to samo tako, da volimo kot zavedni državljani. Te pravice nam ne smejo in ne morejo vzeti. Pri' dite na sestanek, da se o tem malo bolj natanko pomenimo. Nasvidenje! F.G. V Združenih državah je p°' membna arhivska zbirka v r3' ziskovalnem centru na UnWer' zi Minnesote, kjer je ohranja-nja zagotovljeno. V Sloveniji je več arhivskih središč, ki jih gradivo zanima; nadškofijski arhiv v Ljubljani zbira gradivo za cerkveno zgodovino; izseljenski center Prl Akademiji znanosti in umetnosti se zanima za izseljensko dokumentacijo, predvsem v okviru svojih raziskovalnih projektov. Slovenska izseljenska matica se za gradivo zanima, a ga ne hrani. Državni arhiv Slovenije sprejema vse, vendar ne ohranja vsega, kar jim pride roke. Studia Slovenka v Škofovih zavodih ustvarja arhiv sko središče, vendar nima na razpolago zadostnih prostorov in sredstev za ohranjanje 1 urejanje. Ob vsem tem se J pač treba zamisliti. Poročilo o 30. seji Slov. škofovske konference Ljubljana — Slovenska škofovska konferenca je imela trideseto redno sejo v Ljubljani 19. februarja 1996, prav na tretjo obletnico uradne potrditve ustanovitve samostojne SŠK in njenega statuta s strani Svetega sedeža. Slovenski škofje so govorili o papeževem obisku in sprejeli sklep, da bo treba obisk preložiti, če država ne bo izpolnila danih obljub za finančno pomoč. Cerkev namreč sama nikakor ne more zbrati zadostnih sredstev. Škofje so govorili tudi o Slovencih po svetu. Obravnavali so vrsto dopisov in prošenj. Sprejeli so več vabil za udeležbo na mednarodnih simpozijih. Ob 3. obletnici potrditve ustanovitve samostojne SŠK je člane SŠK sprejel predsednik R Slovenije Milan Kučan. Škofje so ga seznanili z odprtimi vprašanji v odnosu med Cerkvijo in državo. Posebno pozornost so namenili načrtovanemu obisku papeža Janeza Pavla II. v Sloveniji. Predsednik SŠK nadškof Šuštar je v pogovoru poudaril tri stvari: pozval je predsednika, naj zastavi svoj vpliv, da bodo prenehali napadi na Cerkev, podpre naj prizadevanja za nunciaturo v Ljubljani in posreduje, da bo država zagotovila obljubljeno finančno pomoč za papežev obisk. Ce država te pomoči ne bo zagotovila, ga bo potrebno preložiti. Predsednik Kučan je izjavil, da zaradi denarnih težav papeževega obiska ne smemo preložiti. ndalje se je zavzemal za skupno odgovornost, za stalni dialog in za razreševanje nerešenih vprašanj v okviru mednarodnih meril. Vsebuje očitke, ki že zaradi posebne vrste različnih navedenih deliktov ne morejo veljati v enakem obsegu za vse. Vojaško sodišče je v splošnem delu omenjeno skupino pavšalno obsodilo za izdajo ljudstva in države ter vojne zločine. Pravnih meril ni upoštevalo. V drugem delu je konkretiziralo dejanja vsakega posameznika, pri čemer je povsem očitno, da ni povezave med dejanji obtožencev. Tudi v tem delu sodišče pravnih načel ni upoštevalo. Tako npr. ni dopustilo vseh dostopnih dokazov pz. prič. Niti eden od duhovnikov iz Rožmanove bližine, ki so ostali v Sloveniji — npr. Stanislav Lenič, Anton Vovk, dr. Ignacij Nadrah — ni bil povabljen na sodišče, da bi pojasnil škofovo delovanje. Mati Toneta Tomšiča ni smela pričati v prid škofa, ker »bi s tem žalili najgloblje občutke slovenskega naroda«. Sodišče tudi ni upoštevalo motivov za določena dejanja, to pa je edino merilo za ugotovitev krivde posameznika. Poslušalci, ki so jih izbrali krajevni organi Ozne, so spremljali proces z neumestnimi klici. Pravne maksime in dubio pro reo (v dvomljivem primeru je treba obtoženca oprostiti) sodišče ni upoštevalo. Sodba je bila napačna, in sicer v vseh trinajstih točkah obtožnice, ki so se nanašale na ljubljanskega škofa. Niti gola dejstva niso povsem ustrezala resnici. Tako npr. Rožman ni nikoli poslal Mussoliniju lojalnostne izjave. Izjava, objavljena v Slovencu in Jutru, je bila Graziolijev ponaredek. Kljub Vovkovemu pismenemu pojasnilu in priloženi avtentični izjavi, naslov- ljeni na visokega komisarja Graziolija, ki je izredno skopa in se natančno drži cerkvenega prava, po katerem mora Cerkev oblast vzeti na znanje, sodišče tega ni upoštevalo. Celo zgodovinarji še danes obsojajo škofa zaradi izjave o zvestobi duceju, čeprav je že Saje v knjigi Belogardizem leta 1951 priznal, da izjava ni bila avtentična. Tudi v novem učbeniku za 4. razred gimnazije je brez komentarja objavljen faksimile Graziolijevega ponaredka. Prav tako škof ni bil organizator vaških straž, tudi podatek o sestanku 17. februarja 1942 v škofiji je očiten ponaredek. Moralna in pravna ocena predloženih dejstev je zgrešena in popolnoma politično in ideološko prežeta. Očitno naj ne bi samo obsodila škofa, temveč tudi onemogočila Cerkev kot inštitucijo. Izkazalo se je prav nasprotno, in sicer, da je škof iz skrbi za slovensko prebivalstvo in preživetje slovenskega naroda v zelo širokem pomenu besede sodeloval s političnim oblastnim aparatom. Nikoli pa ni podpiral okupatorskih sil in tudi z njihovimi cilji se ni nikoli identificiral. Kot italijanski in nemški okupatorji je sicer odklanjal komunizem, toda komunistično ideologijo je obsojal zaradi verskega prepričanja — podobno kot papeži od samega začetka. Rožmanovo »sodelovanje« je treba videti pred kulisami manjkajoče alternative. Dejavnosti škofa Rožmana med okupacijo Slovenije ni moč razumeti, če ne upoštevamo razlogov za njegove stike z okupacijskimi silami, ki so jih komunistični voditelji razlagali kot kolaboracijo. Ce bi se Rožman javno uprl sovražniku, ne bi dosegel ničesar. Tako pa je lahko pomagal veliko Slovencem ne glede na njihovo politično prepričanje: beguncem, internirancem, otrokom, Židom, izseljencem, bogoslovcem, zapornikom, talcem. Grožnja generala Roatte. Dosedanja literatura je npr. popolnoma napačno interpretirala sestanek v škofijskem dvorcu 12. septembra 1942. Narod je na eni strani trpel pod terorjem partizanov, na drugi zaradi maščevanja okupatorja. Škof Rožman je poklical k sebi predstavnike meščanskih strank, Slovenske zaveze in kulturnih ustanov, ker sta mu generala Mario Roatta, komandant italijanske vojske v Sloveniji in Dalmaciji, in Mario Robotti, poveljnik XI. armadnega zbora, avgusta za-grožila, da bosta izselila oz. pobila večje število Slovencev in razveljavila pravice, ki so jih Italijani s konstitucionalno uredbo dali Slovencem v kulturnem in gospodarskem pogledu, če se ne bodo postavili proti partizanom. Kljub nejasnemu izidu sestanka je moral Rožman Italijanom odgovoriti. Z njegovo vestjo je bilo nezdružljivo, da bi zaradi njegovega molka Italijani uresničili grožnje. Še isti dan je poslal odgovor, ki ga po dikciji sodeč ni napisal sam. Iz spomenice jasno izhaja, kaj so želeli sestavljalci tega dokumenta. Prvič, niso hoteli izselitve, drugič, želeli so neke vrste slovensko oboroženo policijo in, tretjič, poskusili so se spoprijeti z italijansko samovoljo. Poleg tega se je Rožman nekaj dni pozneje, 26. septembra 1942, formalno pritožil zaradi nedopustnih posegov Italijanov. V dvajsetih točkah je med drugim zahteval strogo pravičnsot in popolno zakonitost v duhu rimskega prava, veljavnost predvojnih zakonov — razen v izjemnih primerih —, osebno svobodo,nedotakljivost stanovanja in lastništva ter svobodo kulture. Poleg tega je zahteval, da Italijani izpustijo iz zaporov in internacije vse, ki niso zadržani zakonito, in zahteval vzpostavitev javnega reda in miru. Sporna prisega. Samo v enem primeru bi po moji razpravi sodeč lahko prišli do zaključka, da je prestopil meje potrebne distance. To je bilo 20. aprila 1944, ko je na štadionu bral tiho mašo pred domobransko prisego — v odsotnosti nemških vojakov. A tudi pri tem moramo ugotoviti, da je po njegovih besedah in poročilu tajnika Leniča to naredil z zelo težkim srcem. Če preučimo in premišljeno ovrednotimo izjave, postane jasno, da je bil Rožman v stra- (dalje na sir. 15) Dr. Tamara Griesser-Pečar je bila rojena 18. marca 1947 v Ljubljani. V šolo je hodila v Ljubljani, Portorožu in Kopru. Leta 1962 je družina zapustila Jugoslavijo. Po enem letu High School v New Yorku je nadaljevala šolanje na American International School na Dunaju in eno leto na American College v Parizu. Potem je študirala zgodovino in angleščino na dunajski univerzi, kjer je promovirala 1973 z dizertacijo: Stališče slovenske vlade do Koroške 1918-1920. Po poroki se je preselila v Nemčijo. Poleg člankov in recenzij za različne časopise je napisala dve knjigi o Habsburžanih: biografijo zadnje av-stro-ogrske cesarice Zite, ki je doživela enajst izdaj v Nemčiji, na Češkem in Japonskem, ter Misijo Sixtus—Avstrijski mirovni poskus v 1. svetovni vojni. Po političnem prevratu 1990. v Sloveniji se je začela raziskovalno ukvarjati s problematiko državljanske vojne in slovenske katoliške cerkve med letoma 1941 in 1953. Na mednarodnem zgodovinskem simpoziju septembra 1995 je imela predavanje o pomenu »osvoboditve« za katoliško cerkev na Slovenskem. Izšlo je kot podlistek v Slovencu (od 24. novembra do 8. decembra 1995). Ob 70-letnici prof. dr. Richarda Plaschke je v posebnem zborniku 1994. objavila razpravo Problematika katoliške cerkve v Sloveniji neposredno po 2. svetovni vojni. Za javno tožilstvo je napisala zgodovinsko strokovno mnenje o škofu Rožmanu, ki bo izšlo pri založbi Družina. Je svobodna raziskovalka. Z družino živi v nemškem mestu Hameln blizu Hannovra.
