First Reading Isaiah 45:1. 4-6 The all-powerful Lord uses the pagan king Cyrus as an instrument to bring about his purposes. Second Reading 1 Thessalonians 1:1-5 Paul greets the Church in Thessalonika and recalls how they recognised the power of the Gospel. Gospel Matthew 22:15-21 Jesus tells us that we recognise God's rule over our lives by giving back to God all that belongs to God. "Give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar - and to God what belongs to God." Illustration Today's Gospel reading has often been used to prove that politics and religion should be kept apart. You put Caesar on one side, and God on the other. But that would be impossible to maintain once you consider what count as hot political issues: such things as education, health and wealth. They affect every part of our lives. In fact you can demonstrate that spiritual matters often determine the shape of politics. How do you do this? Try this thought experiment: imagine for a moment that you are being flown in a plane over the ruins of a large ancient Roman city. What buildings would you see below you? You would see the public baths, theatres and various basilicas that were used for civic functions. And these buildings would have been financed by wealthy patrons of the city. Now change the scene and the time. You are now flying over a medieval city. What do you see? There are convents, hospices, hospitals, orphanages and soup kitchens. You see how Christian charity has left its impact on the political landscape. The different buildings spring from different religious visions. Rome was less concerned with caring for its poor people, while Christianity tries to put the mercy of God into practice. Gospel Teaching In the Gospel we are told that Jesus' enemies want to trap him. The Pharisees and the Herodians test him with a trick question: "Is it permissible to pay taxes to Caesar or not?" If Jesus forbids paying taxes to Rome, then he will be charged with sedition; but if he supports such pagan taxation, he will antagonise the people who want to be free of the Roman yoke. Notice that Jesus is not being asked to give some detailed analysis of church-state relations. So how does he react? He asks them for a coin with which the tax is paid. They give him a denarius, which has the image of Caesar on it. Jesus himself has no such coin, but they do and we presume they would have used it to pay tax. So Jesus silences them by telling them to give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar. And then he states the more important principle: give back to God what belongs to God - which is everything. Jesus recognises there are some areas the State can deal with but only as long as they do not contradict God's law. At the beginning of his ministry Jesus announced the kingdom of God. He then proceeded to show how God rules in such areas as education, health and money. Jesus was a great teacher, he healed the sick and he challenged the corruption of the Temple and its bankers. Inevitably this led, as he knew it would, to his death, for he was undermining the power of the political authorities. We can see that Jesus is not proposing any great theory of Church and State here; rather he is countering his enemies with a quick-witted reply. Jesus was a prophet who did not teach that you should concentrate only on spiritual matters. But neither was he searching for worldly power. In John's Gospel he explained that his kingdom is not of this world but neither is it out of this world. He knew that this rule would upset those who opposed his teaching on, for instance, law, health and wealth. Application Today these tensions have not gone away. The Church is still called to witness to the kingdom of God. We are baptised into Christ and so share in his kingly and prophetic office. We may neither over-spiritualise our faith and ignore injustices, nor over-politicise our faith and ignore Jesus' warning about worldly power. In our present world there are great numbers of Christians who are living in situations where to witness against Caesar leads to persecution. We are called to discern, not ignore, what the State is doing in our lives and make judgements. There are so many situations, not just those of education, health and wealth, where those who are poor and defenceless can be neglected and need support. On many occasions we can render unto the State what is its due but there will also be times when we are called to have the courage to refuse its demands and to witness that Jesus teaches us to render to God what is God's.
