Voinovich (R-OH) and Mrs. Janet Voinovich presented their annual educational endowment checks from the Molly Agnes Voinovich Memorial Fund to Oliver Hazard Perry Elementary School and Woodland Hills Elementary School in Cleveland, in memory of their daughter Molly. Both schools will each receive $3,215. Voinovich also participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony for a new computer lab in Perry Elementary’s Molly Agnes Voinovich Media Center and held a video conference with gifted and talented classes from Perry and local Denison Elementary School. Each October George and Janet Voinovich pay a visit to O. H. Perry School in Cleveland to remember their youngest child Molly in a very special way. On October 8, 1979, at the age of nine, Molly was hit by a van running a red light as she walked back to school after having lunch at home. After Molly’s death, the Voinovich’s decided that an appropriate way to celebrate her memory was to create an education endowment fund in her memory: the Molly Agnes Voinovich Memorial Fund. Each year, the Voinovich family presents two checks from the interest that is earned on the “Molly Fund” to O. H. Perry School, the school Molly attended, and to an additional school both in support of their Gifted and Talented programs. To date, $69,298.94 has been donated from the Molly Fund to O. H. Perry School and 22 other schools in the Cleveland Municipal School District. Pristava Pensioners Make ‘Koline’ Fall is here and the weather is getting cool. You know these are telemarketing calls. Don’t you wish you could turn the time wasted dealing with these calls into something useful? I have the answer for you. Answer your phone in Slovenian! It is a wonderful opportunity to practice your Slovenian language skills. I do it all the time and found all kinds of benefits from doing so. Telemarketers call about various goods and services. Every one of these presentations provides you with an opportunity to use different Slovenian phrases. For example, telemarketers often have only a first initial and a last name. (This is a dead give away it is a telemarketing call). If someone calls and asks to speak with J. Vidmar, I respond with: Zakaj pa ne veste mojega prvega imena? (Why don’t you know my first name?) If I get two calls in a row with that introduction, I use something else like: Ni nobenega Jay-a tukaj. (There is no “J” here.) When they identify the firm they are representing, I change the response to something that is appropriate. For example, in response to the introduction: Hello, I am calling for Ogden Window Replacement. We are in the neighborhood tomorrow and could come over to give you a quote on windows. One of the responses I use: Jaz sem vse okna ze prenoviral. (I have already replaced all my windows). You get the drift of how this goes. You would be surprised how long you can keep people on the telephone. In fact, I strive to keep them on the phone for as long as I can. My record so far is about 45 seconds. My goal is to have them hang up on me. Answering the telephone in Slovenian has many benefits. It provides an opportunity to practice Slovenian language skills. I’m convinced it has reduced the number of telemarketing calls our household receives. Most telemarketing operations classify phone calls and when they encounter a telephone number that is answered in a foreign language, it gets coded as such and they don’t waste time calling it again. It is pure entertainment for my family and friends. Finally, it’s my attempt to raise the visibility of Slovenian in the world. I make sure that somewhere in the conversation, I use the phrase: Jaz govorim Slovensko. (I speak Slovenian) and if they want to sell something to me, they will have to speak Slovenian. I just hope no one starts a call center in Ljubljana to make telemarketing calls into the United States. —Janez Vidmar Brookfield, Illinois Everyone invited to St. Mary’s Parish Center Groundbreaking The St. Mary of the Assumption Parish on Holmes Ave., (Collinwood) in Cleveland will have their parish community center ground breaking ceremony on Sunday, Oct. 12. No. 40 October 9, 2003 Las Vegas-Style Hotel Complex in Ljubljana Set for February A high-tech entertainment and hotel complex is scheduled to open in the Slovenian capital in February. Apart from a luxury four-star hotel, the complex will also house a casino. Italian hotel chain Domina Vacanze has already signed a 20-year lease on the construction of the Domino Grand Media Hotel that will stand next to Ljubljana’s World Trade Center. The deal is reported to be worth 64 million euros. The developers, Austrian companies Alpha Baumanagement and Immobilien Project Development, claim that this will be one of the most modem hotels and entertainment complexes in the world. According to Vincenzo Presti of Domina Vacanze, the hotel will create 150 new jobs in Ljubljana. US IT giant Cisco Systems will take part in the project. According to Cisco Systems Slovenia director Jasmina Stritar, this will be a pilot project that will be used as an example for the rest of Europe. The hotel’s 214 rooms are to be connected to the Internet, while exclusive technology is to be used for connecting the hotel’s manage- ment software. Guests will have access to broadband network navigation, a high-stream e-mail service, the possibility to tune into video conferences, access satellite television, film-on-demand, Playstation 2 games, as well as a comprehensive database of tourist information. The hotel complex will have a convention center capable of seating some 500 partici-pahtš, as well as a Havana bar, a wine boutique, two restaurants, a beauty center, and a coffee shop. Encompassing 93 double-bedded rooms, 117 standard suites, three luxury suites and a presidential suite, prices will range from 120 to 350 euros per night. Meanwhile, Casino Ljubljana expects the project will boost its visit from 52,000 to 140,000 guests annually. The company also expects its market share to rise to 6% in Slovenia with the help of the project, the com-pany’s chairman, Alex Peklenik, said._______ This news came from Phil Hrvatin. mmermm byjmmw The UNITED States Army by RUDY FLIS When drafted into the Army in 1952, I was given a serial number and the rank of Private E-l. After basic training, I also had a designation of 1745 which meant Rifleman. Oh, yes; I also was a Cau. When I got to Germany, some of my buddies had a Neg. designation instead of Cau. Neg. meant a soldier was a Negro (Black). Sometime in the spring of 1953 those six letters disappeared from our rosters. I liked that. The United States of America just became more united. The reason it meant so much to me is I had many Black friends, who were good to me and good for me. Black and White soldiers slept in the same room, ate together, marched together, laughed and joked and tried to stay out of trouble together by helping each other prepare for inspections. We talked about home and our loved ones. There are some people you hit it off with and some you didn’t. Jerks weren’t identified by color and color didn’t make you a jerk. You had to work on that alone. My Catholic faith instructs me to love my neighbor as myself. That isn’t easy. But, easy or not, that rule works. Love radiates and heals. Hate consumes and destroys. It’s up to us. What I had in the Army I liked, because it worked for me. When the six letters Cau-Neg left Army life, it may have had a positive effect; I don’t really know. I told you I liked it. Now I have another six letters I would like to eliminate from the American way of life. These six letters comprise the word “racism,” liberally used by people who don’t believe in equality, both Black and White Americans. Racism is a word for the dictionary, not for our way of life. According to police spokesman Miran Koren, the suspect, who is a Slovenian citizen, was apprehended on Sunday evening when he was digging up the stolen weapons hidden in the woods near Ljubljana. Two criminal complaints were filed in the case, but one suspect is still at large, believed to be out of the country. The weapons were stolen from the barracks in Postoj-na, a town some 50 km southwest of Ljubljana, on the night of December 9, 1999, when the thieves supposedly arrived at the premises with a lorry and broke into a military arsenal. They stole over 140 pieces of light infantry weapons and some 18,000 pieces of ammunition worth about 100,000 Euros. The break-in was not discovered until the next morning when a guard reported it to his superiors. This news came from Phil Hrvatin. 100 WORDS MORE OR LESS by John Mercina DOES THIS LIST LOOK. Life in the Refugee Camps by ANTON ŽAKELJ translated and edited by JOHN ŽAKELJ Wednesday, July 9,1947 Dr. Erman and Mr. Sesek (refugees who were employed by UNRRA to work in the camp administration) are being transferred to Mur-dorf due to an on-going investigation regarding misuse of camp food and supplies. Sunday, July 13,1947 Mr. Kien showed me a list of refugees who will be required to report for work on area farms. The list includes a number of my roommates, one of my lace-workers and myself. My other laceworkers are too young or too old to be required to report for jobs. Saturday, July 19,1947 I received a letter from Mrs. Ruhlicke, an old friend in Germany. She found out where we were through the Red Cross. She said she fled from the Russians, but then the Americans evicted her from her apartment, threw all her furniture out on the street and burned it. During the war, her husband was buried under the debris from a bomb explosion, but then a second bomb uncovered him. He’s still alive but very depressed about the loss of his factory. Life in Germany sounds as bad, or worse, than life here in the refugee camp. Sunday, July 2b, 1947 Cilka and I walked to Judenburg this afternoon and saw a movie. It was very interesting. Tuesday, July 22,1947 Our roommate Franc Demšar got a job as a driver for a repair shop in Leoben. He really wanted a job as a driver, but this means he will have to somehow get to Leoben every day, which is over 60 miles away. Wednesday, July 23,1947 Mr. and Mrs. Wald, from Spittal, were here for four hours to discuss, their plans to take over our lace business. They propose to tqach 100 women to do other hand-crafts, but they would pay them less than I have paid my lacemakers. In addition, one-third of what they make would have to go to the Austrian work office and 10% to the social welfare fund. Mrs. Wald said we are charging too much for our lace. In the evening, I called a meeting of my lacemakers to discuss the proposal from the Walds. The lacemakers voted to continue working with me. Thursday, July 24,1947 Mrs. Wald visited again and talked with me for two hours, but we couldn’t reach any agreement. I told her I would speak with Mr. Biichsel in the camp work office and send her a written reply. I don’t think he will agree to any changes since this would mean a loss for the “Camp Fund.” Monday, July 28, 1947 Mire had to go to the hospital because a bomb fell on his leg. He was working with the British crew that is clearing the old military training airfield at Zeltweg. This afternoon, the IRO (who is now in charge of our camp) had a meeting at which they announced they will have to cut back on the number of paid jobs inside the camp. (These jobs were considered better than most jobs available outside the camp.) My lacemakers and I will be allowed to continue our lacemaking business for the time being. Thursday, July 31,1947 As I often do, I walked to Judenburg (about 1 mile round trip) and bought food for our roommates. I filled my backpack with 20 pounds of white bread, 12 pounds of beans, two pounds of butter, 4 pounds of soy, and other things. Most of my roommates have jobs outside the camp during the day, so they ask me to get food for them to supplement the camp food. When I returned, we had a downpour with hail. Water was leaking through many parts of our roof. Friday, Aug. 1,1947 Azman returned to Slovenia today. He had been employed in the camp as a cleaner. I worked on lace designs all day. Saturday, Aug. 2,1947 I tried to repair our roof with paper and tin cans. God help us if we have to live here through the winter. All for the quagmire known as “The War on Terrorism.” It’s a war Congress never de-c'ared, another war the United Nations suckered us •nto, a war with no real beginning, a war with no tangible proof of victory, a war that will last for decades, a phony war. We still have porous borders and '^migration policies so lax that terrorists come and go at will. We still have an intelli-gence system that’s more 'uterested in covering its tail than in tracking down and blowing suspects. Then President Bush has t le audacity to ask Congress for send more troops so our sons and daughters can sacrifice their blood, and for us to give up more civil liberties? All this for a war which, if one looks beyond the rhetoric and headlines, is being fought like the Korean and Vietnam Wars, namely, not to be won? Instead, it’s to empower the UN, surrender U.S. sovereignty to it, and give up our freedom so that Bush and the traitors behind him can set up a full-fledged world government with the UN as the main organizing structure. But it doesn’t have to be like this. Tell Congress to stop funding this phony war on terrorism and the countries that support terrorists; to bring our troops home; to defend our borders and enforce our immigration laws; to set up internal security committees to investigate, track, and arrest suspects; to get the U.S. out of the UN and the UN out of the U.S. since the UN defends and niore money, for us to harbors terrorists. When I hurt my back unloading bird seed from the car trunk, a friend suggested “water therapy” and so I am there three and four times a week. I feel at home at the pool for they have arranged to let the Senior citizens use the facility from 06:00 a.m. to 04:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday. Unfortunately, I do not get an early start since I am the Head Den Mother, housekeeper, bottle- washer here on the home, front. I feel at home there for I see folks that have more trouble with walking than me and listening to the women talking about their “Steady Boy Friends” like Ben Gay or his brother Absorbine Junior. The place is huge and you name it and they have it. They have a 50-foot island that you walk around in which they have pumps throwing a water current in the water and needless to say I walk through there “With the Current” for if I would walk against the current, let’s face it, by the time I got around, Zele’s Funeral Home employees would be there waiting for me to float to the surface. They also have a whirlpool within the swimming area and that water goes around at least 35 miles an hour, but again I go with the flow. They also have a “Spa” within the pool area, off by itself and the water in there is kept at 102 degrees. One of these days I am going to pack a lunch when I take a dip in there. Take some eggs and Slovenian sausage with me in the spa and within 15 minutes, they should both be done and with the smell of the garlic sausage, you can rest assured that in no time I will be in the spa by myself. The other day I decided as usual to play and throw a few “hoops” basketball within the water in which you pitch the ball toward the hoop that is just on the edge of the water pool. The lifeguard said, “Ray, I’ll get you a new basketball, you will do better... hold tight.” Well, she brought me the new ball and the first few shots, whoopie, I scored and when I threw it the third time, it hit the rim of the basketball hoop, bounced off and hit a woman on the side of the head. What can I say. If looks couW kill, the calling hours would be from two to four at Zele’s. I apologized to her, | ••1*'* «•■*»•■»< um** u m mm m«*«•«• saying I was sorry and would quit. She looked up and said, “I hope so.” I said “Now wait a minute I am not all that bad. Did you see my first two shots? Do you know who taught Labron James, the new guy with the Cleveland Cavaliers? She replied with a smile, “I am sure it wasn’t you.” I said, “Well don’t be too sure.” I had the old folks in stitches. One old guy said to me, “Ray, don’t feel bad; two weeks ago the same thing happened to me. A ball 1 threw hit a woman in the head and was she mad. It seems the ball hit her head and knocked out her false eye lashes and she could not find them in the four-and-a-half feet of water.” In a way I have to laugh at the women for none of them get their hair wet. God forbid some moisture should befall on their hair. I can understand why they do not want to get their hair wet for without a doubt even though they have not seen 70 in some years, there is not a gray hair in the head. What can I say; don’t fall for all that baloney that blondes have more fun. Just ask the lady who got hit in the head by a basketball thrown -by yours truly. I use caution now when I throw the hoops to insure that there is no woman within 25 feet of the hoop. What can I say? If you have been following this column, you never want to ride in the back of a hearse with me driving and you never want to go to a fish fry that Ray had anything to do with the coleslaw. And above all, don’t go into a pool when he is throwing “hoops.” Lord, forgive me for my trespasses. Well, with the cold weather it has not been all fun even with hoops in the pool, for with the prediction of the freeze, Ray was out in the garden picking all the tomatoes and peppers. After I shoved bags of the crops on all the neighbors, felt they could not go to waste and so I canned (frozen) 17 quarts of tomatoes and diced up loads of green and red peppers. Speaking of peppers, maybe people think that you have to buy special seeds to have red peppers in the garden. No way, just leave them in the garden long enough, and they will turn red. With fighting the weeds in the garden all summer I have decided this would be the last year for a garden. Too much work, and then one can’t even give the produce away. Will plant gladiolus bulbs and Madame Butterfly Snap Dragons as cutting flowers to take to the cemetery, and will only plant one tomato plant and one pepper plant by the drive. Last week, while at the $18 million swimming hole, I learned from the seniors that one can go to the movies on the first Wednesday of every month at the Quad Cinema in Parmatown (Ridgewood Drive) and they have two showings, one at 08:30 a.m. and one at 11:00 a.m. Take your pick from any four movies playing and you can get in for only $1.50. Well, Ray went, and happy to say I seen fellow-senior swimmers down there, too, and seen the movie that Rudy Flis wrote about a few weeks ago, “Secondhand Lions” and Rudy was right. It is one great film. Movies like that are rare to say the least for even Pope John Paul could see that movie without blushing. Haley Joel Osment was great. He was sent way out to live on the boondocks with his two uncles and when he got there, he was most disappointed, for he said, “What, no phones? What, no TV?” Of course, as we look at today’s youngsters going to school, everyone has a pager, a cell phone and at least a five dollar bill for McDonald’s. When I was going to John Marshall back in the late 1940s, I was given two cents so I had my choice. I could either buy a ticket to see 15 minutes of the movie at lunch time, or skip the movie and go to the library and use the two cents to buy a Clover Leaf hot roll in the cafeteria. Well, here I am almost finished with the.column and no jokes. What happened, Ray? Come on, give us a couple of jokes for the road. Okay, got your ears tuned up? Start off with a couple of old-time sayings: Somebody once figured out that we have 35 million laws trying to enforce the 10 commandments. Our court system must not be very efficient. Somebody has said there are only two kinds of people in the world. There are those who wake up in the morning and say, “Good morning, Lord,” and those who say, “Good Lord, is it morning?” Well, let’s have one more for the road. A minister parked his car in a noparking zone in a large city because he couldn’t find an - i . 1 h empty space. He wrote a note and put it on the windshield wiper. “If I don’t park here I’ll miss my appointment. Forgive us our trespasses.” When he returned he found a citation from the police officer along with this note: “I’ve circled this block for 10 years. If I don’t give you a ticket, I’ll lose my job. Lead us not into temptation.” With that I’ll close this column for the week and I bet Jim Debevec is saying, ‘About time.’ In closing, may the good Lord bless and watch over all of you and keep you in good health. One last suggestion, if you go to a pool area and you see yours truly trying to shoot hoops, be sure you are wearing a protective helmet. Next week we will go back to 1957, and the old homestead. The coordinators for this two-week period are Father McGinnity and Sister Martin de Porres. The magnificent statue of the Virgin Mary, commissioned by the late Carl Demma, is constructed of stainless steel, stands 33 feet tall and weighs 8,400 pounds. As is their tradition, every evening, at 7 p.m., there is a prayer service featuring different nationalities. On Tuesday, Sept. 2, the service was held in English, Slovenian, and Croatian. It is with honor that St. Mary’s Slovenian Catholic Mission was invited to participate in an evening of prayer with “Our Lady.” The evening began with a procession and an opening prayer and dedication by Tammy Hanna - coordinator for the evening. Nancy Webster gave a brief history of Croatia, followed by a brief history of Marija Pomagaj by Father Blase Che-mazar. The Rosary was recited in English, Croatian, and Slovenian; the litany was recited in Slovenian, and finally the Benediction. On behalf of Father Blase and myself, we would like to thank all of you who attended and participated in this spiritual evening. We were very excited to see the wonderful turnout on such short notice. Special thanks to those who dressed in “narodne nose” as it was a beautiful representation of our heritage. Thanks also to Father Vendelin and the choir, those in the procession, and for prayer responses in Slovenian. It was a very beautiful evening. I’m told that this evening brought out the second largest crowd in their two-week visitation period. For those of you who may have seen “Our Lady of the New Millennium” for the first time, I’m confident you found her to be an incredible image. I know that the first time I had seen her - she took my breath away. It is difficult to put into words the feelings that overcome you in her presence. I hope that each of you walked away with your own aura of peace and solemnity, encouraging you to pray to “Our Mother.” Father Blase and I would also like to thank Sacred Heart Church, Father McGinnity, Sister Martin de Porres, and Tammy Hanna, for their invitation. —Dana Rebrica Blase Lemont Enjoyed Company of Slovenia Tour Group Editor, downtown on Euclid Avenue couple of tables were re- On Sunday, Sept. 21 it was another nice beautiful occasion at St. Vitus Church. On Friday, Sept. 5 I received a call from Idrija, Slovenia by Dr. Franc Jereb, who is the local doctor and manager of the hospital in Idrija. He said, “Marie, I need a favor from you.” He said they have a tour going to America with 48 persons including four priests who are on a mission or romanija. After flying •nto Chicago, they were going to Marquette, MI, then to Minnesota, through Canada and Niagara Falls. And from Niagara Falls, the bus was coming to Cleveland on Saturday, Sept. 20. They would like to see Slovenian culture with visits to some Slovenian National Homes or halls, and to have a Mass at a Slovenian Church. I knew I must act fast. I called Slovenian Country House restaurant and made reservations for the group for Saturday evening. Next, I called St. Vitus church and sPoke with Stane Kuhar. I explained to him the situation and Stan reminded me about the dinner held that Sunday by the Altar Society. I called John Srsen and told him the' Slovenian guests 'vili be at Mass that Sunday. Then we called a couple of Slovenian National Homes. A couple were booked so we could not visit, but Recher Hall in Euclid said yes and bring them around 3 p.m. Hut the bus driver was from Chicago and coming from Niagara Falls. They went to instead of stopping at 200 St. and the city of Euclid. From Recher hall plans were to attend 5 p.m. Mass at St. Mary’s Collinwood with Rev. John Kumse. By cell phone, they made it back to Collinwood and St. Mary’s at 4:55. I believe every priest is to have Mass or attend Mass every day, so after Mass a group gathered around the church and looked around. They followed my car to Sterle’s Slovenian Country House restaurant. A delicious meal was served. When a Slovenian does not have soup for two weeks, that was a highlight of the dinner. They all loved the soup. A1 Battistelle was the band at Sterle’s that Saturday evening. When he started playing Zapula, the group began singing. Then A1 handed me the mike and we continued singing another six old-time Slovenian songs. The men had beautiful voices; the whole place lightened up, with some 50 voices singing reminded me of singing back in Slovenia years ago. Even the owner, Margo, was dancing, which isn’t too often, but she was happy that night. The next day, Sunday, Sept. 21, was a beautiful sunny, day. We all attended Mass at St.’ Vitus Church. The church was full, the singing was beautiful. The soloist Martina Jakomin got a lot of compliments after Mass. Then we went to St. Vitus auditorium for dinner. A served for the bus tour passengers. The dinner was delicious, the president of the Altar Society, Ivanka Matic, made sure everything was okay. She went to the tables a couple of times to see that the guests were pleased. They served over 600 persons and everything went very smooth. When others found out about the Slovenian guests, they came to tables and tried to find out if any relatives were among the Slovenian guests. After dinner they toured St. Vitus Village with Rev. Joseph Boznar. Then about 2:30 they boarded a bus in front of St. Vitus church and started their trip back toward Chicago. They began to sing as soon as they got on the bus, plus John Srsen told the bus driver if possible to make a visit to Notre Dame University in Indiana. We also had Vida Kosir from Idrija with husband Frank from Ziri, and son Robert, who drove from Cannonsburg, PA for the special day. My sister Mary Ann stayed with me while others went on tour. A couple of days later I called her in Idrija and everyone said the highlight of the tour was the two days in Cleveland. I thank Fr. Kumse, Fr. Boznar, Stan Kuhar, St. Vitus Altar Society, Ivanka Matic, John Srsen, and Recher Slovenian National Home’s Mr. Bill Franks. —Marie Pivik Emily Blase, nine-year-old daughter of Jim and Dana (Rebrica) Blase of Lemont, IL standing in front of the majestic “Our Lady of the New Millennium.” Left to right, Maria and Avgust Petek of La Grange Park, IL, Jožica Jakupovic of Berwyn, IL, Fanika Gorsic, Elmhurst, IL, and Nandi Puc. Have you ordered your tickets for Sunday, Oct. 26? Also, please make a note, one does NOT have to be a member of the Alumni to attend the Honoree Day Dinner event. So, before you place it on the ‘back burner,’ call in your reservation to Ray Gobec 1-440-285-2359, or send him a check @ $18 per person to 10762 Wilson Mills Rd., Chardon, OH 44024. We will be horioring three distinguished, well deserving, St. Vitus Alumnus and to ‘entice’ your presence to the ‘affair’ the following are short biographies of each... their backgrounds and accomplishments. Everyone attending will receive a complete biographical program of each honoree. 1934 St. Vitus Graduate Edward Mihevic, Sr. As the writer of this article I will bypass some of the notes on this particular honoree because I can really say, “I knew him when.” To me he was just “Sylvia’s big brother Eddie, and we, (my sister and I), “the kids next door.” We moved on East 60th when I was five... and by that time Ed was already 11. Edward L. Mihevic Sr. was bom on Oct. 7, 1919 in the same home my parents later purchased, 1134 E. 60th. Later the Mihevic family moved directly across the street to 1135 E. 60th where he spent his childhood and early adult years. He was the second of three children bom into the family of Joseph and Antonia Mihevic (both deceased), brother of Sylvia Plymesser (Pres, of the St. Clair Pensioners Club) and Josephine “Pep” Flaisman (deceased). Here is another bit of nostalgia from the old 60lh street days that comes to mind. Ed’s father Joze Mihevic was lovingly known to all of us as the “Mayor of 60th” and every year, in the fall... around November 11th or so, the Mihevic backyard was the site of the Annual Wine Tasting and potato roast with the whole neighborhood in attendance. What a happy time. The parents, grownups singing, the children squealing, and the spuds snap, crackling and popping out of their shells. Anyone remember those days. What say, Sylvia? Edward graduated from St. Vitus in 1934. East High in 1939, whereupon he en- tered John Carroll University. Hoping to receive a scholarship and become a college graduate was only a dream that never materialized. Due to unforeseen circumstances, he was only able to complete his Sophomore year. It was this factor that later prompted his decision to bestow the St. Vitus Scholarship Endowment Fund, a bequest of $6.6 million. Education was THAT important to him. Edward was an entrepreneur who owned a number of private companies in Northeast Ohio prior to establishing a real estate venture company in Florida. He was Vice President of Tempcraft Tool and Mold Inc., located on South Marginal Road in Cleveland. One of America’s foremost Big Game Hunters, he generously donated his entire collection to Kent State University as one of the Slovenian contributions to the University’s Education programs. The collection included large game specimens from Alaska, Canada, Africa, and Asia. He also enjoyed fishing and bowling; at one time he was owner of a bowling alley on Chagrin Blvd. He was the loving husband of Glenna (nee Price), deceased; dear father of Donna (Walter) Boekley, Edward (Cindy); grandfather of three; great-grandfather of two. Mr. Mihevic resided in Medina and Warren, Ohio prior to moving to Florida in 1986. He died quite unexpectedly on May 16, 1998. A quiet, unassuming man, his legacy here at St. Vitus will live on for many years through the Mihevic Scholarship Fund. 1935 Graduate Jean Križman Jean was bom in 1921 in Cleveland, Ohio in the Slovenian neighborhood at East 61st and St. Clair Avenue. Her parents Matija and Angela Križman emigrated from Ribnica, Slovenia in 1910 to the St. Clair area where they opened a meat market that specialized in sausage making and smoked meats. Jean was the youngest of five children. Brothers Matt, Fred, Emil and sister Albina are all deceased. Jean graduated from St. Vitus in 1935; attended Wilson Jr. High and graduated from East High School. She graduated from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio in 1943 with a BS in Zoology. From 1943 to 1944 she was an Engineering Aide at the Aero Medical Lab in Dayton, Ohio. From 1944 to 1949 she was a Research Assistant, Department Head for domestic and commercial gas cooking ranges for the American Gas Association. From 1949-1980 she was with the Stouffer Food Corp. in Student Management programs. She progressed through all management levels of Restaurant food operations. At corporate level, she headed departments of menu production, test kitchens, recipe writing, etc. In 1972 she was named first woman to manage a Stouffer Restaurant at Summit Mall. In 1975 she was named Vice President of Food Service, Stouffer Restaurants and in 1977 she became Vice President of Catering. From 1980-95 she was Consultant in Food Concepts, Menu and Recipe development for various restaurants including the popular Pufferbelly, and Homblower. Her awards are numerous. In 1977 she was named as one of the “Top 50 Women in the US. who are making it in restaurant management” by Institutions Magazine. Jean has served as Chairman of Volunteers and won the Vega award as a 5 gallon blood donor. She also appeared on the Good Morning America ABC-TV show with Joan London and Irma Bom-bach, with an Ethnic Buffet from the food of Cleveland’s City. She has also served on Board of Trustees of Slovene Home for the Aged, as Recording Secretary. She instituted the annual Christmas Tree Project which has proven to be very popular. In 1993 she published a cookbook titled, “Good Times, Good Friends, Good Food,” with profits donated to charity. In 2002 Jean was honored as Slovene Woman of the Year for the Federation of Slovenian National Homes. 1957 Graduate Lt. Col. Robert J. Jevec Robert J. Jevec was bom on April 1, 1943, the son of Leopold and Ernestine (Pearse) Jevec. They lived on Norwood Road. He graduated from St. Vitus in 1957 and then went to St. Joseph’s High School on E. 185th Street. Throughout this time he worked as a newspaper delivery boy for the Cleveland Press, and was a part-time assistant at the Cimperman Market on Norwood Road. Upon graduation from St. Joseph’s he entered a pre-med program at Ohio State. Since Ohio State was a land-grand institution, Robert un- dertook two years of Air Force ROTC in lieu of a second foreign language. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology in 1966. Robert was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in September, 1966 and was sent to the Army Medical Department Basic Course at Ft. Sam Houston, TX. After completing his tour of duty, Robert was sent to the six month Officer Advanced Course at Ft. Sam Houston in 1972 with further assignment to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC where he was Chief of Officer Personnel. He worked in the Health Standards and Quality Bureau in Washington, DC and was involved in writing many of the Federal regulations for long-term care facilities participating in Medicare and Medicaid programs. During this time he remained part of the Army Reserve and was promoted to Major. He returned to active military service and was assigned to the Army’s Office of Surgeon General in Washington, DC in 1981 where he was responsible for the commissioning of new medical officers for the Army and later for large scale medical operations planning at the Pentagon. Christmas Cards St. Mary’s (Collinwood) announces that pictures taken of the church are now available as Christmas cards. Posters about ordering the cards are in all of the entrances of the church. Order the cards as soon as possible as time has a tendency of slipping away. He retired in December, 1989. Robert began his new civilian career with National Institute of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. He still remains with this office with the title of Chief of Planning. In the past five years he has been involved in dealing with the potential medical consequences of terrorist acts. Robert currently lives in Silver Springs, Maryland. He has a daughter named Tanja. His former spouse is Veronika. He has a sister Betty Lee Gorgon, niece Lee Ann Gorgon and a nephew Robbie Gorgon in Eastlake, Ohio. To find out more about these interesting St. Vitus Alumni, meet them in person on Sunday, Oct. 26. Go up and chat with them. Besides, it is always fun to see the transformation of the school auditorium, from an athletic facility into a grand ballroom at the Ritz. We will be transforming the auditorium at approximately 10 a.m. until finished. We will even treat you to lunch. DOLGAN On the eve of his 90th birthday, Judge August Pryatel has the satisfaction of having fulfilled most of his goals in life, but more importantly, he has been an inspiration to others. Pryatel, born September 20, 1913, contracted polio at age four, which paralyzed his right leg. He had to work hard to walk again. He did not allow the ail-ment to deter him from his goals. He began as a Cleveland assistant City Prosecu-tor. Pryatel was the deputy Superintendent and Super-•ntendent of Insurance for the state of Ohio in Columbus for eight years. He drove the weekly round-trip to the State capital in an automo-bile equipped with a gas Pedal on the left side. Pryatel served nearly 40 years as a judge — chief justice, and judge in Cleveland Municipal Court from 1957 t° 1965, and Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court from 1965 to 1977, the Ohio Eighth Appellate District Court of Appeals from 1977 through 1988, and a visiting judge until a few years ago. Šuster said, “He looks terrific and is in good health. He has a full life, and was a visiting judge until recently. Augie overcame adversity to be the only one in his family who had an education.” Šuster should know. Pry-atel did not marry until age 60 (he and Elaine will celebrate their 30lh wedding anniversary in November), and he resided with his sister Fay’s family, the Susters, in North Collinwood until the time of his marriage.. “We went everywhere together,” said Šuster, whose father died at an early age. “He took me to movie theaters, and Euclid Beach. “My mother always said to me, ‘Why don’t you get a good job like Augie’?” About his uncle’s career, Šuster said, “He had a significant career as a judge. He kept the docket moving, and was known to be firm and fair.” Pryatel, who has a quiet demeanor but is a concise, well-liked speaker, has also given back to the community through the years by serving on the boards of several organizations, including past After Easter break, a teacher asked her young pupils how they spent their holidays. A youngster wrote: “We always used to spend Easter eating potica and cookies with Grandpa and Grandma. They used to live here in a big, brick home, but Grandpa got retarded and they moved to Florida. Now they live in a place with a lot_of other retarded people. They ride on big three-wheeler tricycles and wear tags because they don’t know who they are. They go to a big building called a wrecked hall - but if it was wrecked, they got it fixed, because it’s all right now. They play games and do exercises there, but they don’t do them very well. There is a swimming pool. They go into it and just stand there with their hats on — I guess they don’t know how to swim. He proudly displays a plaque from Hiram College for initiating and contributing to a fund-raising campaign to install an elevator at the College’s Kennedy Center in 1999. “I like to keep an interest in the community, and I follow the Indians and the Browns,” he said. Pryatel enjoys reading, especially the weekly Supreme Court of Ohio update on laws passed each week. A favorite book is “Truman” by David McCullough. His marriage to Elaine, retired vice principal of Solon High School, brought some new experiences to the former bachelor. “August had fun helping me chaperone proms and school events,” she said. August said, “Life could not be better. I don’t know if she made a good decision (to marry), but I did.” His family has grown, too. Elaine has two married sons, and two grandchildren. Pryatel had a 90lh birthday dinner with Elaine, Šuster and his family, and friends. there is a doll-house with a little man sitting in it. He watches all day so they can’t get out without him seeing them. When they sneak out, they go to the beach and pick up shells. They think they are dollars. My Grandma used to bake poticas, cookies, pies and stuff, but I guess she forgot how. Nobody cooks; they just eat out. They eat the same thing every night -Early Birds. Some of the people are so retarded they don’t know how to cook at all; so my Grandma and Grandpa bring food into the wrecked hall and they call it “pot luck.” My Grandma says Grandpa worked all his life and earned his retardment. I wish they would move back up here, but I guess the little man in the doll-house won’t let them out.” Yours truly, —Phil Hrvatin Slovenia’s karstic landscape spreads over more than 44% of the country’s territory, where 8,000 subterranean caves have been registered. This is probably why research into karstic phenomena has such a long tradition. The first explorer of caves in Slovenia is considered to be Janez Vajkard Valvasor, whose Glory of the Duchy of Camiola of 1689 lists 70 caves apart from other Slovenian sights. It was sheer curiosity that first prompted Valvasor into exploring caves, while later he focused on their hydrological features and the composition of stalactites. Another fact that testifies to the long tradition of spelaeology in Slovenia is that one of the country’s most beautiful caves, Vilenica, was opened for sightseeing as early as the 17th century. Research continued in the 20th century and as a result, a register of caves was composed. While the first spelaeologists were not professionals, today they are organized in the Slovenian Spelaeologic Association and more than 40 societies. The association also includes a rescue service, which organizes and participates in rescue operations in the subterranean world and in rough terrain. The association also trains cave rescuers, works on prevention, and offers help in the event of natural disasters. New caves are dis- covered as a result of systematic terrain research. The data, complete with a description and map of the cave, are then recorded. The. Slovenian karstic world will not disclose its charms at first sight, given that many caves are quite long and deep. Among them are the world famous Škocjan Caves, a UNESCO world heritage site, the classic and highly popular Postojna Cave, as well as the Vilenica Cave, the venue of the annual literary meeting of the same name. The term “karst” itself is named after Kras, the limestone plateau in southwestern Slovenia. Hrvatin, Wachovia Securities (216) 574-7371. Retirement - from a Child’s Viewpoint AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA, OCTOBER 9, 2003 8 The Newburgh Railroad by JOSEPH T. SNYDER As I have enjoyed reading about Collinwood from Joe Glinsek’s excellent articles, it brought to mind the tracks and trains from the St. Lawrence area of Cleveland. During the waning days of the Depression, families, particularly those from East 82nd Street, used the coal cars as a source of fuel for heating their houses in the basement furnace. Early in the morning, wagons, wheelbarrows, bushel baskets, and even aprons were the carrying means of hauling the procured loot (black gold). There were established territorial squatting rights, depending on where the coal cars were temporarily parked. In those days it appeared that the caravan of coal cars extended for a half a mile. Most of the coal was only partially crushed, so some of the lumps weighed upward of 15 pounds. Young children were challenged to catch these prizes from that 8 foot drop. Every once in a while, someone was apprehended in this thievery by the dreaded railroad detectives (Deeks). This embarrassment would involve a trip to the Jones Road Police Station where a stem warning, veiled threats, then a later punishment at home to the wayward villain; notwithstanding the fact that he might be carrying on the family tradition. Later, in our upper grades at St. Lawrence, it became an enterprise to ask brakies and engineers for fusees. “Hey, Mister, how about a fusee” was the cry. Some of us would plead to the brakeman for a cap or two of dynamite. Some venturesome daredevils would hop a slow moving caboose and extract a handful of dynamite along with a few fusees before making a desperate leap from the accelerating train. These caps were especially helpful for anchoring them to the CTS street car tracks, then scaring the wits out of the unsuspecting passengers and the conductor. We thought it was impossible for an “old” (probably aged 45 years), conductor to catch any of us speeding youths running down Union Hill from E. 82nd to E. 80th Street. Between E. 82nd and E. 88th were three bridges over the railroad tracks. A four foot wall on each side of the sidewalk was an attractive nuisance. The attraction was a challenge of the venturesome to tight rope walk on this 12-inch ledge with a 40-foot drop to the tracks. It was fair game for bombardier practice as moving engines had an easy target of their chimney. Beneath the third bridge, nearest to E. 88th was a 3-foot channel which was a natural habitat for amphibians. This area was surrounded by what would now be considered rain forest or wetlands. “Tarz” was the champion pollywog catcher as he ventured into this jungle with a few uninitiated youth to experience the wiles of nature. Grasshoppers, butterflies, rare birds, and an occasional turtle or snake could be discovered. Fable had it that when you squeeze a grasshopper you would extract tobacco juice. The proper choice of weapons was a slingshot, which was whittled out of a tree fork and some rubber obtained from an old inner tube. There were plenty of small stones in that area for ammunition. The railroads were famous for emitting soot and shaking the foundation as the heavy loads rumbled along. This emission, which was indigenous to the rust belt of Cleveland, added unwanted insulation to rooftops particularly when there was an abbreviated drought. Jeric’s Hardware store had to maintain an abundant supply of paint as this exercise was a must almost every two years, but was often delayed as long as possible. Some claimed that shingles more or less camouflaged the dark gray color. Many of us never experienced a beautiful white winter snow because it became gray within a few hours after falling. Train whistles kept any overnight visitor awake most of the night. The roundhouse was only about a mile north of Union Avenue but was not within our realm to venture into the “Deck’s” patrolling zone. In the back comer of Union Field was a zone between The Illuminating substation and the north side railroad that became flooded after a severe rainstorm. This was deep enough for some skinny dipping, notwithstanding the potential for swimming in polluted water. All things considered, the railroad was an integral part of the neighborhood. One old timer remarked that as long as the railroad was running and factories were bellowing out their noise and pollution, there were many workers making a living because of these inconveniences. Few Slovenians from St. Lawrence area worked for the railroad compared with those from Collinwood. We, however, dominated the steel industry. Humor purges the blood, making the body young, lively and fit for any manner of employment. -Robert Burton Slovenian National Home presents a St Lawrence Alumini & Friends REUNIOH DAHCE Saturday, Oc^fe^ll, 2003 Home 35^;Eart^|h(Sf. • peveland >.pf. .-jUntfl? Slovenia: My Country. “To describe this book as a photographic journey through a country most of us couldn’t find on a map would be accurate - though limiting. The author most assuredly offers readers a chance to see the incredible beauty of Slovenia through his outstanding photography, but reading the accompanying text is just as important as looking at the scenic views. “Znidarsic’s writing is poetic (Aren’t those vine h i I Is... combed by nymphs with different combs, but without coming to an agreement on where to do the parting?), and some of his words may send readers scrambling for a dictionary (e.g., fulgacious, autochthonous, and fecundate). “However, in the midst of the beauty of his words and photos, he expresses his criticism of the way that Slovenia is racing to catch up with the rest of the industrialized world, polluting its land, water and air in the process. Many readers may want to consider Slovenia as a destination for their next vacation; it is still a virtually untouched, verdant Eden that is pleasing to the senses and hypnotic in its beauty. An outstanding book for any library, budget permitting.” Monthly Palačinke Breakfasts Served at St. Mary’s Parish By popular request, St. Mary’s Parish in Collinwood will again be preparing monthly breakfasts for your enjoyment. How does Slovenian link sausage, homemade crepes (palačinke), real scrambled eggs, fresh bread, fruit garnish, orange juice, and fresh-brewed coffee sound? The breakfasts will be served from 8:30 to 12:00. The next breakfast is set for Sunday, Oct. 26, at a cost of $6 for adults and $3 for children. Everyone is invited. Judging by comments heard at the first breakfast in September, folks really enjoyed the delicious food. This is a great opportunity to meet your friends for breakfast, or make new acquaintances in pleasant company. Take-outs will also be available. A few breakfasts with this menu were held over the past five years, and they were very well attended. Many people commented that they should be planned more often. Proceeds will be used t° help finance the new multi' purpose Parish Community Center. LAVRISHA Construction & Repair BUILDING IMPROVEMENT SERVICES 6507 St. Clair Ave. - Cleveland, OH 44103 216 / 391-0035 __ Appreciation Brunch at St. Vitus Parish On Sunday, Oct. 5, St. Vitus Parish in Cleveland had an all-parish Mass at 10 a m. to honor and recognize the many parish volunteers. Pastor, Rev. Joseph P. Boznar, was the celebrant, with concelebrant Father Victor Cimperman. Before the full church, Fr. Boznar stressed in his homily the ^en Commandments are Very much like the road maps, traffic signs, rules and regulations needed by driv-ers and passengers alike: they provide direction and guidance for all. Choir members sang traditional Slovenian hymns as Well as contemporary songs t° enhance the Mass. At the conclusion of the Mass, approximately 270 Persons filled the parish auditorium for the appreciation volunteer brunch. Father Cimperman gave the opening invocation prayer. Sue 2itko, chairperson of St. vitus Pastoral Council, Warmly greeted the audience and thanked each person pre-Sent for their time, talents, volunteer service to the Parish and community. She then introduced cur-J'ont pastoral council mem-ners: Father Boznar, Sister Jdary Avsec, SND, Joseph ntey, Art Jarc, Verena wnistof, Paul Lavrisha, Rob-^t Mills Jr., Boris Music, ^ndrea Plassard, and Joseph docevar, representative from n® Parish finance council. After a nourishing ^nch, Ms. Zitko introduced p. ^ather Boznar. Father °2nar again emphasized the 'Pportance of the many good , °rks performed on a daily asis» much of which is often Noticed until it is not perked. Father Boznar noted that honorees for 2003 re-J^ted the same dedication ers f°r serv'ce t0 oth- l as ^as been demonstrated Uiany parishioners for the 10 years of the parish. Father Boznar concluded his remarks by again thanking all in attendance for their support of the parish. Ms. Zitko then called on Stane Kuhar from the parish finance council. Kuhar proceeded to introduce the current members of the parish finance advisory council: Fr. Boznar (president), Joseph S. Baškovič (chairperson), Mrs. Debbie Cugel, MBA/Ch.FA (investment advising capacity), Mr. Thomas Gorensek CPA/LPA" Mr. Joseph Hočevar, and Mr. Thomas Srsen. He noted that the work of the finance advisory council was to advise the pastor and parish on handling of the temporal affairs of the parish to ensure continuity of the parish within its means and resources. Mr. Kuhar also noted some of the work accomplished by the finance council: establishment of the parish endowment trust, providing direction for the financial resources regarding renovation of the parish church, funding sources for parish facilities, and most recently, the development and construction of the recently completed independent senior living facility, called St. Vims Village. He also noted while some of the work was more complex (tax exempt bond issuance for the village project), a large portion involved every day activities that needed to be accomplished, but more mandate (paying of bills, what repair needed immediate or deferred repairs, what insurance providers to be used, meeting with contractors, etc). Kuhar stated, however, that the most important activity was the support, cooperation, and good will from parishioners and benefactors: all the resources and facilities have little or no meaning without the continued support of the people. Kuhar noted that another activity was the development of providing resources to educate the youth of the parish at mition paying schools, predominantly Catholic institutions. The primary reason this development work has been able to proceed in the parish for the past 14 years was due to the foresight and generosity of the late parishioner, Edward L. Mihevic Sr. Kuhar then introduced his daughter, Mrs. Donna Marie Boekley, as the guest , speaker for the volunteer appreciation brunch. Mrs. Boekley stated that ' nearly a year ago (Nov. 17, 2002) she made the announcement that the bulk of her late father’s estate, valued at $6.6 million, was to be left to the parish scholarship program established in 1989 by her late father and named in memory of her grandparents, Joseph and Antonia Mihevc. Mrs. Boekley proceeded to explain the details involved toward having these funds provided to the parish. She noted the difficulty of this task as the original legal document, an irrevocable trust, had very specific legal requirements and limited uses. That is, this irrevocable trust was solely limited to registered parishioners who attend tuition paying schools in high school and the first year of college. In addition, a number of government entities, such as the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), had to be satisfied that the scholarship program and parish were indeed designated charities under current IRS rules and regulations, as well as being competent to handle this matter. Mrs. Boekley emphasized that if St. Vitus Parish would not exist, then proceeds of her father’s estate would then be directed to the Diocese of Cleveland. Mrs. Boekley noted that while the original approach worked very well with, an initial donation of $300,000 in 1989, it would now be very difficult to meet the stated legal requirements. She said she reflected long and hard on this matter. She also noted that as the Co-Trustee for her father’s estate, she requested and received approval from (Probate) Court: to permanently expand the base of applicants for the scholarship program from grades Kindergarten to last year in college for registered parishioners with the remaining half of her father’s estate to be used as a resource for the parish through its endowment trust. Mrs. Boekley stated that approximately 75% of the assets in her father’s estate have been transferred to the parish. The remaining 25% will transfer in the future. Sue Zitko thanked Mrs. Boekley for her remarks as well as thanked Terri Jarem (Big Bouquet) and Jim Slapnik for providing the colorful floral arrangements in the auditorium. Ms. Zitko announced three upcoming parish events: St. Vitus Alumni Honoree Day (honor and induct three individuals, in- Donna Boekley eluding the late Edward L. Mihevic Sr. on Oct. 25), the 60lh Year Observance Anniversary to the Priesthood for Fr. Cimperman (Nov. 16), and the annual Christmas Choir Concert (Dec. 28). Fr. Boznar then led the closing prayers with all in attendance praying the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be to conclude the 2003 volunteer appreciation Mass and brunch. New Zealand Opens Consulate in Slovenia LJUBLJANA - An honorary consulate of New Zealand was opened in Ljubljana as New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Phil Goff paid an official visit to Slovenia - the first by any foreign minister from that country. Relations between Slovenia and New Zealand are good, but there is still untapped potential in economy, the foreign ministers told the press. The upcoming EU membership presents an opportunity to further these ties, Dimitrij Rupel and Goff agreed. The pair used their meeting to look at international issues, concluding that their views on the Palestine-Israeli crisis and the Iraqi situation are similar. Both countries oppose the Israeli decision to remove Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, and would like to see the UN Security Council adopt a resolution that would return authority into the hands of the Iraqis. Goff also met with PM Anton Rop and Economics Minister Tea Petrin.______ This news was submitted by Phil Hrvatin. Segulin at 216-451-1876. by AGNES KOPORC Sofne years ago 1 wrote an article that was to be published in the St. Vitus Centennial Anniversary Book. But, it somehow never found its way into publication. I recently found it, and with my Dad’s birthday being on October 1 llh, this is in Memory of him. The first Sunday of the month... in September... already a bit of Fall in the air... parishioners were scurrying into the church while the “Bells of St. Vitus” tolled, warning them that it was ‘almost time.’ I found my way into my favorite side of the church, Mary’s side, the bells still ringing, when suddenly my mind regressed in time, and it was a ‘Holiday’ or one of the church’s holy days and I thought of my father. The holidays were always exciting, filled with anticipation, and also with an undercurrent of nervousness. In those days, St. Vitus had no electric bells; they had to be rung by hand. It was during these holidays and holy days that my father, John Kosec, our great uncle Anton Jeras who lived with us on E. 60th for many years, and lovingly known to us as “Stric,” and Mr. Frank Bran-cel from Prosser Avenue, would climb the church towers (turen) to ring the bells by hand. Throughout the day, these three Bell Ringers would prepare for their “heavenly” venture, building up courage - strength... by partaking in the “juice from the vines,” namely, the wine cellar. For years, these Musicians of our Lord made their way upward, toward the heavens, sending forth the sounds of the bells with nary an accident. "En vincek bombo spil-da bo zvonček zvonil... " Suddenly, my mind returned to the present as the Sacristy Bell rang. Everyone rose, Mass had begun. I wiped the tears from my eyes, cleared my throat, and began singing the entrance hymn. <§> w. majer services Garage door and door opener Entrance and storm doors. We all know her for some special act of kindness she has done, or some activity we have shared: singing with Glasbena Matica, being a sideline participant in SWU Drill Team performances and Parades, or as a seamstress of extraordinary clothes for friends and especially brides at her bridal shoppe on Superior Avenue. The recent story in the American Home about the bedding dress of Ann Tom-sick, who exhibited her spe-cial dress at her 50th wedding anniversary party, reminded 1116 that there are hundreds of Sfrls like Ann who have Photos of their most beauti-frl wedding gowns, and can lhank Carole for making 'heir dreams into reality. I aiIi one of them, too. The CaroFran Bridal Shoppe, on the second floor, ^as the brainchild of Carole and her sister Fran Sietz. k°th of them were trained in sewing at Richman Bros, 'ailors where many of our Slovenian girls worked after completing grammar school. Garole was such a perfect Seamstress that she advanced to doing the most intricate af>d careful sewing, under watchful eyes of de manding supervisors. At Richman’s it was one big happy family, and she still has many friends from those days. When Carole and Fran began their own bridal gown business, they gave such special loving care to their customers, no one could compare. Etfery little decoration was perfectly done, every dress fitted perfectly and many happy hours were spent in the work rooms by just a few good seamstresses who did the finest and most delicate sewing. I remember learning to hand roll the illusion (net) veils that were so popular by watching Carole’s artistry. Carole still has a beautiful singing voice. She was always singing and we all sang with her, especially duets. She was a long-time member of Glasbena Matica and loved the atmosphere of singing, stage performing and socializing with great people who had musical talent and could follow the baton of Anton Schubel in bringing “culture” to the stage of the Slovenian National Home on St. Clair Avenue. She was happiest when given the task of designing and making costumes for the prima-donnas who had the main roles. All those ruffles, long silk gowns, flowing headpieces were Carole’s work. And she did many, many operas. She made every star shine so much more brightly dressed in those beautiful costumes. I don’t think her work was ever acknowledged publicly because she was just so much a part of the total picture that people would see on the stage. I cannot forget Carole’s many hours following the ideas of her sister, Fran, when there were uniforms to make for the girls drill team on St. Clair. Fran was a national officer of Slovenian Women’s Union and took special interest in the marching groups that were so popular just before WWII. Fran would ask Carole to come up with a design for a cap, a cape, a skirt, maybe a special outfit for the “captain” of the team, and Carole would do it. It was a given. She is still a member of Branch 50, SWUA and although she doesn’t get out much anymore and attend the meetings, she still has those loyal old friends who visit her and share their memories. Carole will be 91 years young this month, on October 27th. I wish I could be there to celebrate with her, but I will be in spirit. The picture I have enclosed was taken recently and really shows how lovely she is, and has always been. God bless you, Carole; we all love you. Številni poslušalci in prijatelji oddaje so napolnili dvorano. A komu? Edi Gobec, zaslužni profesor Kent State University in ravnatelj Slovenskega ameriškega raziskovalnega središča: Dr. Gobec je v svojem lepo sestavljenem govoru natančno orisal zgodovino oddaje in njene mejnike. Mojca Slak. Ivan Hauptmann in g. Hvala Vam, NOVA GORICA, Slovenija - Iz Clevelanda sem prejel nekaj klicev v zvezi s člankom “Zlati glas rojakov ob petdesetletnici delovanja radijske oddaje Pesmi in melodije iz naše lepe Slovenije." Italijanom, Nemcem, Poljakom). 2003 Zaradi velikega števila študentov iz etničnih naselbin, vpisanih na CSU, so me predsednik univerze dr. Walter Waetjen, provost dr. John Flower, dr. Arnold Tew, in privoljenjem študentskega radijskega odbora dodelili okoli 15 polurnih tedenskih kulturnih in nepolitičnih etničnih oddaj ob času, ki ni bil tkim. “prime time” oz. najbolj-, ši čas za študentske oddaje. Torej ob večernih urah in koncih tedna oz. ob sobotah in nedeljah. Z izjemo John Carroll univerze nista niti Case Western Reserve univerza in ne Kent State univerza z najmočnejšim oddajnikom izrazili zanimanja. Slavko Gaber. Vida, Marije Vnebov-zete in Sv. Kristine. / Pomagaj Marija, / pomagaj nam ti.” Iskrena zahvala. Ob dveh popoldne so bile v cerkvi Marije Pomagaj pete litanije in blagoslov z Najsvetejšim.' Marija Vavpe- tič, Madison, OH; $250 - Vincent in Marija Ste- fančič, Willoughby Hills, OH; $100 - Joseph Vrtačnik, N. Olmsted, OH; $100 - Frank Karner, Cicero, 111.; $100 - Kathy Latuca, Cicero, 111.; $50 - Lori Jeršič, London, Ont.; $50 - Frank Toplak, Chardon, OH; $50 - Frances Fritz, Chicago, 111.; $50 - Stane Šušteršič, Chevy Chase, Md.; $50 - Millie Skalar, Parkers Prairie, MN. Grobišča in priče Preostanejo torej grobišča in priče dogajanja. Konec 5. dela Svob. Slov.. 4. sept. 2003 Alenka Puhar: Raziskovanje (NADALJEVANJE s str. Lepo pozdravi vse domače in sodelavce. Janez GRIL Sobotna priloga DELA Poštni preda!
