Vsi so razcapani, bledih, prepalih obrazov. In v tej slabotni postavi državnega pravdnika je prvikrat v zgodovini Caponeje-v^ga življenja združena sila in moč, kateri prosluli car gangežev in morilcev ni bil kos. Ali ni bil on najsilnej--ši in najmočnejši raketir vseh časov? In če nisem jaz toliko vreden, kot angleški princ, naj me koklja brcne. Kako bo s slona prišel, to si predstavljam, ampak kako bo nanj zlezel, me skrbi. Njegovo gospodinjo, bogato in spoštovano v vsej okolici, so našli tega dne zjutraj v njeni spalnici umorjeno, strahovito razmesarjeno s sekiro. V Njega zaupam, ker vem, da me bo rešil." Odpeljali so ga v ječo. Par miiiut pred osmo so prišli ponj. Zvezali so mu roke in ga peljali k vislicam. . . Zazeblo me je v srce. Srce v prsih me je hotelo razgnati. Kaj se bo zgodilo v prihodnjem trenutku? Pričel se mse bati. Dali so mi črno kapo čez glavo in ničesar več nisem videl od tega lepega sveta. Krvnik in njegovi pomočniki so dajali naglo razna povelja. Pahnili so me proč od vratic. Odvezali so me in me peljali nazaj v ječo. Toda vse ni nič pomagalo, peljali so me ponovno na vislice. Zopet so mi zvezali noge in roke in deli črno kapo čez glavo. Zopet so me odpeljali nazaj v ječo in krvnik si je zopet ogledal vzmet. Toda krvniki so me vzeli pod pazduho ter me peljali proti vislicam. In odpeljali so me zopet nazaj. In ni ga bilo mirnega spanja več zanj. Dobil je za-strupljenje krvi in umrl. Stopili so v vežo. "In kakšnega gospodarja!" In Tine bo zdaj res potreboval hlapca. Konj je zamahnil z repom in vrgel gorečo suknjo v kup sena. Seno je začelo goreti in zgorelo je bližnje gospodarsko poslopje, omenjeni mlekarski truk, štirje avtomobili in dva vozova. In so molčali'do Brezi j. "Sladki moj varuh, ali si me iztrgal?" Nemo, tiho, vdano. Midva bova rajši šla k ne-vesti-steklenici, ves sem že žejen in potreben." In ga je prijel za rame. Izvolite me potrpežljivo poslušati, kar bom povedal." "Vaša knežja milost si upa meni to praviti?" "Seveda, moj edini dobrotnik." "Milostivi knez! "Kako to? Za Boga! Mar je vaša knežja milost to premislila?" "Jaz sem premislil, sedaj pa premisli ti, dobrotnik, če sem vitez, vreden gospodične." "Saj mi je sapo zaprlo od začudenja." "Pripoznaj, ali sem imel kak nepošten namen ?" "In vaša knežja milost hi pomislila na naš revni stan?" "Tako po ceni so Bileviči? Tako ceniš svoj šlahčanski grb in starodavnost svojega rodu? Mar govori to Bilevič?" "Hi, hi!" "Drugače tudi ne more biti pri Bilevičevi." The letter was printed, and soon more came in from members of other classes, all in accord with the idea. A meeting was called and the initial plans were made. A committee w a s elected and upon them fell the burden of carrying the project through. A preliminary dance was held and last Sunday, after months of untiring effort and ballyhoo, the project was realized with some 350 graduates sitting in at a big banquet. Undoubtedly, it was a huge success and, by far, the largest St. Vitus' reunion ever held. All credit due to the committee. But, as many speakers at the banquet brought out, rather than being the culmination of the project, the dinner should be regarded in the light of a real( honest-to-gosh start toward bigger and better things—an efficient, active alumni association. And that, rather than the retaliation of past events, is the purpose of this article. A good start is half the battle. Why stop then, with only half way more to go? Just a little more effort, now that interest has been created, and the movement can be carried to a most successful finish. At the writing, everything is in the group's favor; enthusiasm is at the top, curiosity and its complement, interest, have been aroused and created and all graduates are ready to fall in line. All that is left to do is for someone, or a group, to take the initiative. It is up to the reunion committee who planned the banquet to take this step by calling an open meeting fqr all graduates, irrespective of class, immediately. That meeting should see the foundations of a strong organization laid, and should put into existence an ac-. tive, helpful and happy body of St. Vitus' graduates. •The American Home Junior took the initiative in bringing "old timers" together again. The American Home Junior is going to do its best to keep them together! Committee, let's have notice of that meeting! Lei's See Some Spirit And while we're haying, our 1 houphts run along these lines, we'd like to see a similar fine turnout for "Doljack Day" as what, there was for the banquet.- This, we know, is poaching upon the sport ed's territory, and \ye haven't the faintest idea of how the tickets are going or anything else about the project, but just the same we'd like to put in our good word for the movement. Over 250 gymnasts are to take part in exhibitions at the gigantic field day and picnic sponsored this Sunday by the Orels. • The program will begin at 2 o'clock in the afternoon at Frank Strumbly's grounds, corner Bliss Rd. and St. Clair Ave. The exhibition will cover the entire field of gymnastics ranging from drills, dances, tumbling, ring, parallel and horizontal bar work. The entire Orel club has been hard at work preparing for this exhibition and are in good trim, which promises to make this performance one of the best they have ever put on. Arrangements have been made with the Cleveland Railway for added bus transportations between the end of the St. Clair Street car line and the scene of the picnic, this in order to accomodate the large crowds planning to arrive by street cars. The Orel affairs are usually well attended. and the committee in charge of the picnic has made all necessary arrangements to accomodate the crowd, no matter how large it may be. Ruddy Kalister will entertain with his accordion for the dance to follow the exhibition. Frank Surtz, chairman, reports that the dancing may last longer than usual. Refreshments will be of the very best, a competent staff of cooks will see to it that no one goes hungry, and the same for those whose throats may become parched. Don't fail to attend this gigantic exhibition and picnic, enjoy yourself, and besides aid a worthy cause, for following their usual custom, the Orels will turn over the entire profit to the now St. Vitus' church building fund. VALENCIC-ZALLAR SECRET WEDDING IS MADE PUBLIC Regardless of the depression, Dan Cupid is still in business, operating a most thriving concern. Recently Dan centered his business campaign on the Junior Holy Name ranks of Collinwood and as a result three charter members of that organization have sought the coveted aisle leading to the altar. Dan Cupid's first victim was Louis Pike, for whom the ceremony was performed during the latter part of May. Last Saturday morning the rituals were repeated for the second victjm, Rudolph Boldin. The other victim of Cupid's campaign was somewhat more fortunate than the other two—in a way. Daniel Zallar, who wa§ Cupid's third victim in Dan's second campaign into the Holy Name ranks (Dan Cupid's previous attack upon this same organization was last summer when he had enticed two members, Joseph Pe-rusek and Joseph Bizjak into his fold) was successful in his attempt to keep the fact that Cuptd had won, a secret. Unknown to even his closest friends, Danny, as he's known to his friends, was quietly married to Miss Frances Valtncic, on Saturday, May 13. Rev. George Hovanec officiated at the ceremony which was performed at 5:30 in the evening. Zallar was the first treasurer of the Holy Name Juniors and served two terms in that office. Mrs. Zallar was a member of the Young Ladies Sodality and is well known by all its members. The members of the Junior Holy Name Society wish the three young men and their brides success on their latest venture. The above picture represents Mr. William F. Petrovič, son of the deceased Mr. and Mrs. Frank Petrovič, and a brother of Frank Petrovič, 903 E. 137th St. William left Sunday morning, June 14th, bound for Annapolis, Bd., for physical examination to the U. S. Naval Academy. A large group of his friends came to see him off at the depot and wish him luck. A surprise farewell party was tendered him just before his departure at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Vehar, 13704 Astor Ave., a large number of his school friends and chums were present. Bill gives all the credit for his early education to the Sisters of Notre Dame, teaching at St. Vitus' school, also to the Charity sisters at St. Mary's school in West Park. He is also a Collinwood High graduate of 1930. We wish him success in passing the entrance examinations and in all his studies in Uncle Sam's Academy, and hope the time will come when vie may rqfer to him as the first Slovenian admiral. COUPLES RUSH TO ALTAR AS END OF JUNE DRAWS NEAR AVERAGE 40 FOR MONTH Cinderella Jane Finds This Year's Marriage Crop Unaffected by Times Tomorrow will bring about the grand finale of weddings for June. In the past four weeks an average number of 40 couples have been married in the four Slovenian churches. These weddings, some formal or informal, others simple or elaborate, all radiated with the present fashion trend. At no time in memorable history have brides and their attendants looked more graceful and attractive, and really one dares to say that this is one reason why June has not suffered such a noticeable marriage shrinkage, as was predicted on account of the depression. A number of Slovenian couples will be married tomorrow. ARCHITECT COURT HONORS THREE SCOUTS OF SILVER FOX RESTFUL MADISON-ON-THE-LAKE DRAWS MANY VACATIONISTS This week O. I. SLOVENIA PRAISED IN BROADCAST BY RADIO BALKAN MAN STANDING BACKSTAGE WITH TRIGLAV EDITOR'S NOTE: Thin is the ninth of a aeries' of articles dealinir with our social, cultural, athletic, dramatic, and fraternal societies, as compiled by O. I. Mnozy. THIS SERIES of local club histories would not be complete without including "Triglav," dramatic society with a dramatic past. Twenty-eight years of active dealing in the same community has made the name of Triglav a byword to all lovers of clra-i matics, and it is with great pleasure; that we take you back to a little scene that happened in the early days of" it's existence. In the early nineties, a fall evening, up Norwood Rd., a large crowd is treading their way to the old (then new) St. Vitus' school. A'new stage had been built by a recently organized society called Triglav, and the public was curious to see what it looked like and just what this society could produce. Well they certainly must have put their first performance, "Zamujeni vlak," over alright, for from then on Triglav was made. Triglav was originally Slovensko Katoliško Iozbraževalno Društvo (Slovenian Catholic Cultural Society), organized by the Rev. Vitus Hribar at that time paster of St. Vitas' church, in 1903. Triglav became an independent organization, six of the charter members are still active today in the workings of the club. First With Electricity Their first productions Vere held in the old St. Vitus' school hall. Gas lamps were in vogue those days, and Mr. John J. Grdina wired the stage with the first electric lights, which caused quite a sensation. Remember this was the mauve decade, big gas bulbs were to be found in our best parlors electricity was as yet a novelty and this was considered quite an innovation on a local stage. From the school hall, Triglav turned to Knaus' and then to Grdina's as the nature and work of their productions expanded until the present day are housed in the Slovenian National Home, where they have scenery and effects worth many thousands. At one time Triglav was also noted as possessing a very good group of singers. The club has presented every Slovenian play possible to be produced on our local stages and . have been the first to bring to the Slovenian stage translations of American and English plays. Translate Plays Matt J. Grdina, director, is largely responsible for the success of all their productions, he has also been responsible for the translations and adaptions of the English plays. Any one attending a Triglav offering is always .assured of seeing the best acting and elaborate scenic displays. To enumerate all the actors who have appeared in their plays would take up too much space, most of them are well known in the local field of business and the professions. Triglav has be^ii the cause of many romantic love matches. Cupid has seen fit to use as targets many members, now happily married to others in the group, and in fact, have their children enrolled in this society. Many of the Triglav members saw service in time of war. The same enthusiasm and thorough preparation is noticeable in their social affairs. The club has held many outings, their annual masquerade ball and New i'ear parties, are the envy of the. entire neighborhood. Bizarre decorations, elaborate entertainment, and a general good time are a part of every affair. First Vaude Show Here's How to Open Packages Without Fear of Over-Exertion She received a package, bound with a strong cord, but she had neither a knife, nor a pair of scissors, wherewith to cut the string. Then, much to the surprise of her spectator, she procured a match, and burned the string in two, Now, is not that a clever act? The young lady js a member of the Jugoslav (Slovene) Club and her initials are M. S. -O- Agent Escorts 65 to Jugoslavia; 40 From Cleveland Many's the time we hear the homeland of our fathers described in glowing terms; its scenic beauties depicted by our folks, local speakers, singers and poets. But perhaps the most touching tribute that could be paid a country, was heard last Sunday over the air from a great Station WJZ during the half hour broadcast of the "Balkan Mountain Man" through National Broadcasting Corporation in New York and relayed through the local Station WGAR. The announcer was Mr. Ford Bond and this is what he said: "Hail Slovenia, that place of earthly paradise, with its rugged mountains, shady trees, and quiet peaceful countrysides. From this romantic land, a peace loving land, a land accustomed to foreign oppression, we bring to you two charming bits of melody, and song depicting a deep yearning, almost bordering on sadness, and yet with a touch of gladness. One is a plaintive little love song and the other a tribute of an emigrant to his native land." High honors were bestowed by the Silver Fox tribe upon three Slovenian scouts at its court of awards meeting last Friday, June 19, 1931 at the St. Clair Bathhouse. They are the recipients of the scoutmasters award for advancement, leadership and the "all-round scout" given by Mr. Felix A. Dan ton, tribe scoutmaster. Second Class Burt Carpenter, a member of the tribe since October, 1930, was presented the award for advancement 'for consistent and persistent efforts to pass the requirements of the second class rank—despite obstacles and disappointments and lack of opportunity to pass the tests," his citation read. Scout Carpenter was also commended for his faithful services as librarian of the tribe since last November. 'For increasingly faithful services as tribe chief for almost two years," the leadership award was made to John Ajster Jr., who became a first class scout last Friday and who last month was named acting 'assistant scoutmaster in charge of camping and outdoor activities by the tribe committee. He has come up through the ranks of the tribe during the past two and a. half years and now serves on the staff of the tribe scoutmaster. Joseph Zajc, second class scout, was named the "all-round scout" in the tribe combining- leadership, advancement, service, the scout oath and law and the daily good turn. "His fellow scouts, his patrol leader and tribe officers are almost unanimous that he represents a good scout," his citation read. "He is modest and unassuming. He is the loyal son of a widowed mother. He is faithful in his religious duties," were some of the qualities inscribed in his citation. Scout Zajc was graduated from St. Vitus' school on Sunday, June 14. In making the presentation to him, Mr. Danton admonished him to guard well the responsibility which this unusual honor brought with it. The awards were respectively an illustrated volume on birds, flowers and animals published by the National Geographic Society. The award is to be made annually. -o-- By JOE ROSA CANTON, O.—The past week seems to* have been a blank as far as social affairs among the Slovenians were concerned. Maybe we're wrong, but we suspect that the recent hot spell accounts for it. We are all more or less looking forward to the Northern Ohio Federated SNPJ lodges picnic at Kenmore, O. From the interest the announcement is creating it is safe to predict that Canton will be well represented. SILVER FOX TRIBE HOLDING BENEFIT PARTY WEDNESDAY We have just been informed that Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gerbec, Bremerton, Wash., are the proud parents of a baby boy. Prior to their long trek across the country, Mr. and Mrs. Gerbec resided in Canton, where they are quite well known. Their numerous friends join this department in extending congratulations to them. Mr. and Mrs. Victor Volk and then-daughter Clara., of Akron, O., were visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Rosa of this city last Monday evening. ---0-- INFORMAL SOCIAL EUCLID, O.—Miss Albina Gabrenja was the hostess at a charming informal social gathering last Saturday evening at her home on Ivan Ave. Bridge and 66 made up the card games, followed by dancing. The square dance was an innovation at this affair. A table midnight lunch was served at the table. The following were among those present: Misses Sophie Grdanc, Bertha Laurich, Helen Muran, Josephine Ska-la and Jean Wiesniewska, and Messrs. Alex Jasert, Walter Kcscica, Michael Michael Lawr, ence, Edward Prusha, Rudolph Volcansek and Jack ZaVerl. GUILD OUTING EUCLID, O.—Strojin's farm, Geneva, O., was the scene of the first outing held by the St. Christine's Guild. The Rev. A. L. Bombach accompanied the members and their friends to this outing. Games, contests and dancing were the order of the day. The large crowd that attended was well pleased with the program and entertainment offered by the girls. Visions of brand new tents, of nights spent under starry skies—a few hours stolen from the hum-drum of city life to be spent in the great outdoors, with a creek nearby and birds and flowers all around—these are dreams many a scout of Silver Fox tribe is having these days, as plans are being completed for the card party they are sponsoring on Wednesday, July 1, 1931 at Mervar's Hall at 8 p. m. Proceeds from the card party are to be used to purchase tents and camping-equipment foy overnight camping trips this summer. A portion of the rnohey will be used to help attend the Boy Scout summer camp at. Chagrin Falls, as Well as overnight hikes!. Tickets are 25 ients per person and may be secured from scouts and tribe TO CEDAR POINT EUCLID, O .—The Young Ladies' Sodality of St. Christine's church, are sponsoring an outing to Cedar Point this Sunday. The trip will all be made by boat, which, should prove a novel experience for most of the members. Well here's hoping none of them get seasick. the way, was produced by them a few years ago. The liall was packed to it's utmost capacity and many had to be turned away. They also scored a tremendous hit, by being the first to bring a well known orchestra, Stubby Gordon, to play at a dance given by them at the Slovenian National Home, and at popular prices. Another capacity crowd attended this venture, setting a National Home record for dance attendance. Triglav boasts of being the oldest organization of its kind where no dues are collected, it is strictly non-mercenary, often turning over the profits for some charitable cause. It now numbers something like 100 members, governed by a board of trustees, and is also the only local club of like nature to have a closed membership. At present they have a large list of individuals waiting for acceptance into the organization. Their principle is to give to the public the most for its money and they have certainly succeeded in their efforts. Much Competition The reason they are not producing so many plays at present is due to present economic conditions and to quote the director Mr. Matt J. Grdina: "Another reason for us curtailing our productions is the fact that so many fraternal lodges are producing, or rather attempting to produce dramatic works, for which they are not as well fitted as a regular simon-pure dramatic organization, in fact they are practically spoiling it for all dramatic societies." This in brief relates the history of the Triglav, it would take a full length book to describe the activities and doings of this group. We wish Triglav Mr. August Kollander, steamship agent with the John L. Mihelich Co., will escort about forty passengers from Cleveland, and an additional 25 from New York, to Europe next Tuesday, June 30. They are to sail on the steamer "Paris'," the majority. of Mr. Kollan-der's passengers are families who intend to remain in the country of their birth permanently. Mr. Kollander plans to remain in Jugoslavia for a period of two months, during which time he will tour the whole of Jugoslavia by bicycle and also tour Venice. Mr. Kollander has promised us to send in any interesting event or happening he may meet with on his stay. --O-- OUTDOOR FESTIVAL The chorus then sang "Brez tebe | officers. There will be refreshments draga ljubica" and "Bodi zdrava Do- j and table prizes. Mr. Felix A. Danton movino." The singing coupled with the announcement and the pleasant complimentary comments of fellow Americans following the program, made one proud that he is a Slovenian. If other nationalities can pay us such a tribute, how much more ought we to appreciate and love the land of our parents. -O- is chairman of the committee in charge of arrangements. --0-- Trumpettes Entertained A pedestrian often has the lights with him, but luck against him. The members of the Trumpettes Club will be guests at another anticipated, Sunday afternoon bridge-social on June 28. Miss Molly Prince,. 1017 E. 71st St., will be hostess. DIRECT CHOIR EUCLID, O.—During the summer months, in the absence of the school sisters, the following girls will have charge of the singing during . the masses at St. Christine's church: Miss Mary Petek will direct at the 6 o'clock mass. Miss Albina Gabrenja at 8, and Miss Mary Janchar at 10:30. --o--— Ken and Dorothy Williams to Show for Booking Agents A chance to land a good contract will be offered Ken and Dorothy Williams, popular song and dance team locally known as Olga Bezjak and Frank lie Jr., next Sunday evening when they put o ntheir act before a group of Cleveland booking agents. The team is appearing as headliners at a pretentious revue given by the Euclid-37th Dance Studio at the B. L. of E. auditorium ,and all the local bookers will be present looking for new talent. As usual, Miss Bertha Ccrne will accompany them at the piano. Many other interesting acts make up the balance of the program. BANQUETING WITH THE GRADUATES K. K. K. Lassies Invite All to Their Frolic at Spelko's Farm An outdoor festival and dance, entirely different from any social event of this kind, will take place tomorrow evening at Spelko's farm. Needless to say, the hostesses will be the popular K. K. K. girls, who. as ususal, are sparing no efforts in order to make the affair most enjoyable for everyone. There will be a full program of dancing, refreshments and entertaining accordion and banjo music. And, just think, admission is only 35 cents. -O--- MEXICO BOUND The first vaudeville show in the! further triumphs and successes in all neighborhood, a tremendous success by ' their undertakings. Daughter of SDZ Secretary Tours South-West for Vacation An 18-day trip through the romantic and picturesque South West, is the sort of vacation that Miss Mary Ko-goy, daughter of Primož Kogoy, supreme secretary of SDZ, has picked cut for ,this summer. Mary intends to go first to New Mexico by train. • There she will be joined by her friends, after which the entire party will tour the surrounding-country by automobile. We wish the popular young lady a pleasant journey and a safe return. By ROCKY No less than 350 of the old timers put in their appearance at the St. Vitus' Alumni Reunion banquet last Sunday at Grdina's hall. The crowd was by far layger than what the committee had bargained for, and quite a bit of difficulty was experienced in seating everybody. In fact, two of the hardest workers on the committee didn't even get places at the dinner, the unfortunates were Misses Frances Zulich and Mildred Milavec. Frances was alumni vice president, while Mildred held down the office of secretary. It was such a big success that all attending expressed their favor of making it an annual affair. And if they do they'll have to hire the Slovenian National Home—if not the Cleveland Public Auditorium. Undoubtedly, many graduates who missed last Sunday's affair will sure to be on hand for the next one. Every graduating class from the years 1913 (the first from St. Vitus) to 1925, inclusive, was represented. Strangely enough, attendance tym-ors went to the rst graduates, for out of the five living members of the class, three were present, one male and two females. Representatives of all the classes and local sheets spoke, besides the drey. All the speeches were short and interesting with honors going to Francis Surtz, who had the assembled guests in a constant uproar with his humorous description of St. Vitus' school in its infancy. A decided hit was the brick ice cream initiated S. V. S. Not only did the novelty of it, appeal to the grads, but also its refreshing coolness. Yes, it was qiiite warm. Orni could almost say "hot" without fear of any criticism or contradiction. The sisters of the St. Vitus' school hereby wish to express their heartfelt thanks to the committee in charge of the recent Class Reunion banquet, for their thought fulness and kindness in inviting them to the banquet held last Sunday. It in with a feeling of deep regret that they wish to announce the fact that circumstances prevented their being present at the reunion. They also wish to extend a sincere invitation to all their former pupils to visit them this summer at the Notre Dame Convent, corner Ansel Rd. and Superior Ave. Following the speeches, all graduates took a bow according to their class. Of course, all gave the others a big hand. Likewise, did the cooks and comely waitresses come in for their share o£ the applause. And they deserved it, too; the chicken dinner was well honored guest, the'Rev.' Andrew An-'cooked and well served. Bravo! And the person we missed most of all was Cy Verbic '21, the lad whose letter to the American Home Junior really started the reunion ball arollin'. Where were you, Cy? And lest we forget, Johnny "Buddy" Klaus, likewise of '21, asked us to give his regards to all his former classmates. Johnny couldn't possibly be there, being busy putting out fires for the city. Following the repast dancing was the order of t,he evening. And what dancing! Hie Arcadian Melody Pilots put on a special exhibition for the folks, and everybody "went t'o town." And if you liked the way the halls were decorated. Anthony Sternisha and Stanley Tome are the lads to whom all compliments should be paid. They're the boys who did all the work. It was surprising to learn how far some of the old timers have gone; many of them are professional men, others in business, others have collected scholastic honors, still others are in seminaries and convents, and still others, heavens have pity on them, are in the newspaper racket. And when it was all over, everyone was sorry the end had come. They had so much fun meeting their old Sweethearts and pals. But next year is not so far away, just 365 days, and it may bring us another big St. Vitus' reunion. Here's hoping! Voice From the Stands By EDDIE KOVACIC Junior Sports Editor OUT IN BAINBRIDGE way last week there was entered in one of the races a nag with the musical monicker "Song and Dance Man." This bangtail was one of the week's long shots and when he came strutting across the finish line he was pacing the rest of the trotters and paid to the tune of $154.60 for a $2 ducat (and not a parking ticket, either). Well, we were interested in that race and particularly that horse because Johnny "Butts" Blatnik had a ticket staked on him and thereby was exactly $154.60 richer after it was over. This in itself is not so important, but when you consider the luck John has I been running in the past three or i four years, you fully realize the marvel of it all. In the past he would bet on a sure pop, and what would happen? Well, generally the horse never got away from the post or was scratched. A fairly good example of his luck comes to our mind. You know, he had plenty of it. but it was all of the variety labeled "BAD." He placed a bet on an oat inhaler, who was picked to win all by himself, going away. To make the thing more certain, the nap, drew the inside post at the barrier, which made it practically impossible for him to lose—yet that's just what he did and without any effort what so ever. No, the horse wasn't left at the post, neither was he scratched, but—of all things—the jockey fell off! And oui dashing hero was out his two dollars! DOLJACK DAY DOINGS Everything is aii set for "Doijack Day." All that is needed now is the cooperation of all the Slovenians and friends cf Frank, who, as everyone knows, is cavorting in the OUtfield for the lowly Detroit Tigers. The date is Sunday, Aug. 9, and the sales of exchange tickets is now going on, with reserve seats obtainable at Gornik's Hab, Mandel Hardware, St. Clair Bathhouse or John Ajrilch's. Pour hundred seats have been re-, served along the thirdbase line at $1.40 each. Frank » Mervar, ardent base-baller, has given the use of his roof garden to the "Doijack Day" committee for that night so that the celebration may be carried throughout the entire day. The American Home Junior and everyone connected with "Doijack Day" thanks Mrs. Mervar for his generosity and desire to make this clay o big one for local Slovenians. -o-- RAY JAY SAYS (Continued from page 5) Jones and his Merry Makers were the local rage? . . . and his -Lake Erie Night Cap program once a month? . . . announcer Art Herske? . . . and the only radio advertising was clone by the station owners? Two of the most starting occured during the past week, when the Progressives edged the Loyalites, 4 to 3, and the Boosters took over Geo. Washingtons, 7 to 5, to chalk up their first victories of the season. In the other games, the SYMC trounced the Clairwoods, and Orels whipped Betsy Ross; Pioneers best Comrades. Progressives 4, Loyalites ."> *--- The Progressives finally pulled themselves together and came through with a victory. A least expected one, too—against the Loyalites, last year's champs. t S. Trebec of the winners allowed four hits as did J. Grzybowski, Loyal-ite moundsman, but the former's teammates bunched theirs for three runs in the fifth to take a 3 to 2 margin. They added another in the eighth to sew things up. Besides striking out nine men, J. Grzybowski accounted for half of his team's hits, getting a double ancl homer in three trips to the plate. For the Progressives, Podnar pounded out two singles and Cretic a triple for the hitting highlights. Fielding laurels for the tilt went to Thirdbaseman Jerele of the winners who accepted no less than ten chances perfectly. On the other hand the defending titlists slumped on the defense and their four errors went a long way toward sending them into their fourth setback of the season. Progressives A. R. H. O. A. E. The audience applauded and applauded, while we held our heads. The presentation savored too strongly of burlesque for our pre-war tastes and her caricatures of other Hollywoodites were entirely too satiricsEl and bespoke a jealous disposition. The bout is a six two-minute rounds slamborec, with big Pat Smith in the opposite corner, and is billed as the main go. In his initial appearance in the pro-ranks Eddie flattened one "Joe Lil-lich" at the local public hall in one round, this being a curtain raiser to the Simms-Stanton shindig, which the former copped by a kayo. A short time ago the younger edition of the fighting Simms brothers came back after a year's layoff, and iced Frankie Florian, also a former simon-pure heavyweight, in less than two minutes of the opening heat. This was in a preliminary match at the West Side Equestrium. So tomorrow Eddie will be out to keep his slate clean by trying to land that dangerous right and to chalk up his second straight victory under his new manager, Doc Župnik. Two other battles on next week's card show promise of being good. These are the Loyalites-George Washington affair and the Pioneer-Orel tussle. The couple will be married on Saturday, Aug. 1. Mary is one sweet girl, who has lived for a long time in West Park, but whose migration to Cleveland has never been regretted. If you can not guess, there is no fair, telling why. And Jack, you know, is an all round popular good fellow. He is well known in the community sports activities, as a record bowler and baseball man. Incidentally, he is glad that Miss Mary came to our big town. The wedding is only five weeks from tomorrow, so it might be well to get that rice stocked up now.
