Ker so zaloge žitaric v ZDA trenutno Precejšnje, cene bodo ostale zmerne vsaj do konca leta. Ker mnogi kmetovalci sedaj prodajajo živino, bodo cene mesa morda celo nižje v prihodnjih mesecih, v prvi polovici 1984. leta pa bodo veliko višje. Neka-teri sedaj omenjajo možnost mokre in hladne jeseni. Francoski vojaki so pripravljeni sprejeti boj z Libijo — Pot do pogajanj odprta PARIZ, pra. Radiča je kljub temu šel v New York in obiskal Adamiča v svoji pisarni v uredništvu revije Common Ground. Kaj naj še sedaj jaz napišem o nastopu KRESA, ko so že drugi toliko napisali in vse opisali, kaj nam bodo Kresovci ob svojem nastopu pokazali? V angleškem delu Ameriške Domovine od 19. avgusta je mlada, v Ameriki rojena deklica slovenskih staršev, Suzanne M. Snyder, napisala vsebinsko izredno lep in zanimiv članek pod naslovom »Kres is a Work of Love«. Enako so Janezu v bolezni res samaritansko stregli njegova žena, druga hčerka in oba sinova. Ja- neza Šuštaršiča in č.g. Franceta Gabra. Thi y*ar the theme is “Pust” o March Gras.” Here is an es Nanation of Part II. Masking oneself has been Practice common to me throughout the ages. These hav ,een forgotten, but the mask ave stayed and will most prc abiy remain with ma torever. n Part II. of Kres’ perfor-ance, the dancers will por-ray the Mardi Gras traditions, Jtrbolic rites, and authentic asks from the various egions of Slovenia. Ust as Halloween provides °Ungsters in America the op-P0rtunity to “Don a mask,” ° Mardi Gras “pustni torek” akes this possible for the ^e°ple of Slovenia. On that aV everyone celebrates the °f winter, the beginning of ew life, and the final oppor-k nity “j0 have a good time” * 0re Lent begins. As you of*1 *ma8'ne> a celebration ais klnd knows no restric-^ °ns and can include anything c 6 ^rrnian imagination is J^le °f. It is interesting to l^at t^le orisinal Slove-gr n rnasqueraders were c^il^n nten. Only later did th' ^ an^ wornen share in Is Privilege. Although Slove- nian villagers did not have the comforts of “ready made” masks, they used their ingenuity and craftsmanship combined with homegrown products such as beans, corn husks, animal ikins, etc., to fashion their “new face.” Many masks were made of leather or wood and took months to complete. Many other traditions prevailed on the feast of Pust, some serious in nature, others totally comical. Unfortunately, most of these traditions are now forgotten. In the introduction of Part II of Kres’ performance, the dancers will reenact one of the most interesting scenes — the dragging of the plough through the village. Early on Shrove Tuesday morning, the young men would visit any maiden who was of marriageable age but had not succeeded in capturing her ’’mate.” They came dragging a wooden plough to which they had fastened a ’’husband” of straw. They placed this handsome “dummy” under the maiden’s window or on the roof of the house. Much crying and laughter ensued. Amid the commotion, the father angrily pursued the mischievous young men, hid the dummy, and tried to appease his crying daughter. A panorama of traditional masks will be presented in three parts. In Scene One the oldest Slovenian masks from the Trans-Mura Region will be shown. These represent our pagan roots. They are god-man like creatures, half human and half animal. They howl, jump and tease the girls and children of the village. At the same time they embody good and benevolent spirits bringing good luck and blessings for a good harvest to every home they visit. Each housewife of the village considers it an honor to be visited by these well-wishers and has Good Work? Editor: Please find my check for a renewal subscription to the Ameriška Domovina. Rumors have it that the Alpine Sextet will join the Fantje on several numbers, as an extra twist from their usual acappella. The Sextet will also provide dance entertainment after the curtain falls. The Sextet is in its fifth year, fresh back from several engagements in Toronto and Sharon , PA. There may also be a special appearance by members of Zvon from Fair-field, CT. Director John Srsen noted that the Fantje have some fresh blood this year. Joining the other veterans are: Miha Dolinar (also of the Alpine Sextet);Miran Dolinar (no relation folks, but of Korotan); and Stane Knez (of the Mladi Harmonjikarji). The new talent should round out the near-perfect harmonies which the Fantje have religiously followed from their origin: the spontaneous, evening vocalizations of the young men of Slovenija on the village green, after the day’s work was done. This legendary custom, found over most of Slovenija in her peasant villages, constitutes one of the three most basic elements of the Slovenian culture, the other two being a)the language and b)immersion in Roman Catholicism. Srsen pointed out that ticket sales are expected to be brisk with the innovative “seating in the round” the Fantje will employ this year. He emphasized that people should buy their tichets early in order to guarantee a seat. A sell-out crowd is expected. Reseiva-tions for tickets may be made through either Tomaz Srsen(432-2041), Janez (Continued on page 7) prepared special goodies for them. The men graciously thank the lady of the house after sampling the goodies, and take their leave, walking backwards, of course, so that no evil spirits would visit the household. Masks from Lower Styria and Upper Carniola will be featured in Scene Two. The Whip-Lasher announces their arrival swinging his long whip in a menacing manner. He is followed by the Musician who can only play his music-box when “cranked”, the ruse, Brne and piceki (humans dressed as animals), namely the horse, camel and chicken with her chicks, who come bringing blessings to all the farm animals, the babji mlin, the mill which miraculously turns old women into young maidens, the gypsy, bear and his leader. They dance the traditional polka for a good harvest, especially an abundant crop of fat turnips, and depart. The final scene of Part II will present the more modern and very recognizable masks from Littoral, Slovenia, the Lavfar-ji literally meaning the runners. As their name indicates, these persons roam from house to house bringing luck to its inhabitants along with their funny antics and tricks. The Lavfarji are grouped into two categories — the beautiful and the ugly. The forerunners of this colorful troop are ta tir-jesti — the scary ones who announce the arrival of the masks through the vilage for three days prior to the event. Their masks, usually detailed and fashioned from wood, are menacing. Their behavior is threatening, especially to children. On Shrove Tuesday, amid much laughter and singing, the masqueraders arrive. They are led by old man PUST who is all covered with moss and holds an evergreen tree in his hand. He symbolizes Old Man Winter and must therefore be either buried or burned at the end of the evening’s festivities. Among the beautiful masks are the bride and groom with their bridal party, the ivy-covered man (symbolic of spring), and the daisy, the fortune hunter who is always ready to make a deal, and the fat man who cannot move without assistance. Among the ugly masks are the Old Man and the Old Lady, the devil on a chain, and the witch. Pust (Old Man Winter) who is said to be guilty of all misfortunes of the past year, is sentenced to death. In a special dance, which alternates between a polka and a march, Pust is caught despite his many efforts to escape, and is carried ceremoniously to a waiting bonfire. All the action must take place before midnight since Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent, a time of repentance and fasting. All present are aware that this is their last opportunity to make merry. Ed note: The folklore dances of the masks and other dances can be seen at the Kres concert at the Slovenian National Home on Sat., Sept. 10 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Sept. 25 beginning at 3:00 p.m. For tickets see any Kres member or call Miss Cilka Švigelj at 944-0708.
