V Ljubljano je prispel 27-letni holandski reporter J. A. Pommel, ki potuje že od 1. februarja 1927 po svetu. Prepotovati hoče v naučne svrhe tri kontinente: Evropo, Afriko in Azijo. Doslej je že prepotoval Belgijo, Nemčijo, Švico, Fran cijo, Anglijo, Španijo, Italijo, Grško in Jugoslavijo, v Afriki pa Maroko in Alžir. Vsak bo dobrodošel in vsak z veseljem sprejet. However, being just an ordinary human being with all its fallacies, I frequently succumb to mirror-gazing. Every time that I have to shave myself I hold a silent conversation with myself in the mirror. I have found it to be profitable. As I stare into the mirror, ] often ask myself—just how honest I am with myself, and just how much I am conserving my energies for things yet undone—ahead. On the other hand, the mirror reflects a lot of thought. It often leads me back to memories, to occasions, to places, to people. I think of the time, for instance, whoa i was nine years old, wondering if I would ever grow up to be a man. Now that I have matured, the picture of my childhood days often comes before me, reminding me of many childhood pranks I was prone to do. A woman looking into a mirror amuses me; I would give a great deal for an exact copy of the train of thoughts that run through her mind as she stands there, arranging her toilet. And yet I do not disapprove of this; rather, I consider it splendid. Fastidious women, as well as men of this nature, are a constant source of admiration for me. After all, if we are not going to be neat and well-ar-ranged in our bodily habits, who is going to admire us? And, by the way, who does not like to be admired from a per sonal appearance standpoint? The mirror is always very honest. It never lies. It reproduces the exact truth. Many times it acts as a teacher and a guide. Often it whispers, and the admonition is heeded. The mirror cannot be said to be merely a mechanical Utility. A person living alone foi quite a time will admit that it isn’t a pleasant experience. 1 know of a person under similar circumstances who always got a smile out of seeing his face in the mirror every morning. And why not? Who is more interested in your face than yourself? Louis M. Kolar. Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Tisol and Mr. Joe Jacksi of Chicago visited in Cleveland Sunday before resuming their tour to Niagara Falls. A wanderer on a lonely desert plain Welcomes the light of a silvery star; For its silvery beams sA)the a tired heart, Tirelessly it twinkles from afar. CLEVELAND LODGES TO PICNIC The Cleveland Federation ol J. S. K. J. Lodges has completed all details for its annua' picnic, to be held Sunday, Sept 1, at the Jugoslav Home on Re-c-her Ave., Euclid Village, which is more modernly known as “Ljubljana.” The committee assigned for duty at the affair are preparing for one of the largest attendances, and no doubt it will bp a huge success if the weatherman gives them the breaks. High-class entertainment will mark the picnic this year. Sports of various description are scheduled, including many events for the kiddies. The besl refreshments available will be served. The members are urged to make their appearance a I this pre-Labor Day outdoor celebration. TO CHRISTEN FLAG LET’S GO, LODGES You are like a silvery evening star One sees shining in the des ert of life, And one follows its ligh^ as it lights the way Out of unhappiness and strife. And you, of the understanding heart, Know that my heart is filled with dreams, That are unearthly—of far away things, That live when a summet moon beams. Though the others see a happy, smiling face, You know in my heart there’s a tear, A tear that lies buried with a broken dream, That blossomed only last year. St. Barbara Lodge No. 3, one of the pioneer lodges of our organization, of La Salle, 111., will celebrate its thirtieth year of existence Sunday, Sept. 1. It will also be the occasion for the dedication of a new flag. Several charter members, who have seen our organization develop from obscurity to the rank as the third largest Slovene fraternal union, will be present at the christening of the new banner. A number of eloquent speakers are expected at the ceremony, which wil! later be followed by entertainment. We wish the lodge a re petition of its past success. ------o-----—— ■ A hypocrite is one who appears to be what he isn’t. NOTICE TO ALL MEMBERS We urge all the readers of the New Era Supplement to send in items of news for publication. Things are constantly happening in your lodge and community which would be certain to interest the entire membership. Write to us and tell us what is stirring in your lodge or community. The paper has been established for your sake. Take advantage of this and help make it interesting. tine and ill-fitting glasses. Women should prevent infection by having wounds caused by childbirth repaired or infections previously acquired cured. One can help physicians treat the disease successfully by seeking medical advice early. One should not be afraid to find out what that lump is. Reliable statistics show that nine out of ten persons who think they have cancer do not have it. That’s why I welcome your silvery light, For there is no one to understand, I’ll never forget what you mean to rrie, Or the touch of your friendly hand. Whenever a lonely, silvery star Shines alone in skies so blue My thoughts go winging to the other “star,” And that bright star is You. —Christine Troya. --------o------- There is no sense in anticipating a large membership in your lodge if you are going to forestall any efforts to get new members. AVIATION Aviation should always be encouraged. It is the marvel of modern machinery and will in the future be the outstanding means of transportation. Amateur aviators, like amateurs in any line, mut be guarded from making too rapid advances in grasping the fundamentals oi running and controlling an aeroplane. There is a popular axiom wrhich says: “Little knowledge is dangerous”: meaning, that unless a person is thoroughly trained in one field of endeavor his bits of knowledge will do more harm than good. Daily we hear of amateui flyers being killed because ot inadequate equipment and lack of knowledge of the mechanism of an aeroplane. In most case? of accident the machine is ob solete, and extremely danger ous. The pilot is not a licensed one, but merely an enthusiast who hopes to be a pilot some day. Youth is apt to reach at conclusions too quickly without giving it a thorough investiga tion of knowledge possessed The result in most cases is fatal. Demosthenes. The members in our organization should meditate and contemplate more on their environment in the S. S. C. U. This paper affords an excellent medium for the expression of our thoughts. We are certain that there are a good numbei of intelligent members among the 400 belonging to our English-speaking lodges. Members who are mentally active knowing how to think and what to think. Our hope is to develop an urge in these people to write for our organ, the New Era. Their time in writing will be well spent, for there is a certain indefinable satisfaction derived from writing and seeing oneV article in print which no other form of expended energy offers. Aside from this, everyone ha? an equal opportunity to win one of three prizes for contributing an article which denotes some thought. Who will be the lucky person to be awarded the first $5, $3 and $2? Which of our 13 English-conducted lodges h a ? members who are mentally active? We seldom hear from oui friends in Rice, Minn. Come on, members of St. Stephen’s lodge, let’s make things hum. George Washington was a leader, an example of pep and energy and an excellent person to emulate. Let’s go, Washingtonians, and let’s be an active force in our realm of lodges. We expect the Arrowheads to make a real mark.in whatever they utfdertake. Just watch them hit the bull’s-eye every time they take a shot at anything. Betsy Ross’ members, if they comply to their name, will be a creative group of people. They will be credited for doing something unique. When the Collinwood Boosters begin boosting our paper, our sports, our membership drive, etc., they will take a dominating position in our system of lodges. Euclid Circle, as soon as they get a firm footing, we are sure will make circles around other lodges in every fraternal activity. The state of Minnesota is recognized as an unusually productive country, that is why we are so sure that St. John the Baptist lodge will grow to be interesting. A lodge based on a name so significant as the name Comrades is bound to achieve success. We hope to hear more from our friends in Waukegan. The Samaritans are little heard from, but we may rest assured that they are plugging on with determination to reach an envious goal. We should not be deceived by the name Happy-Go-Lucky. Serious problems as well as the pleasures of life are considered by the members in Barberton, Ohio. The Pittsburghers are a coming lodge. Their activity, al though it comes in spasms, indicates that a constant flowing interest could, and we are cer tain will be developed. Colorado Sunshine lodge members are never touched with darkness. Possessing this poise, there should be no limitations to their success. Some day we expect the Western Stars to shine with extraordinary brilliancy. Theii motive is to rise to the greatest possible heights, the stars, an idealistic aim, indeed. Sport Sense COMRADES LOSE TO BUSINESS MEN Lose One Game Out of Ten. The Waukegan Comrades, after winning nine consecutive games, dropped the tenth game to the strong Tenth Street Business Men by a 11 to 1 count in the city series. The Comrades tied the first game 9 to 9, lost the second, 11 to 1. The final game will be played in the early part of September. Next Sunday the Comrades wil! travel to Kenosha, Wis.., and cross bats with the strong Dunnebach nine. For the past two months the Comrades have been playing marvelous ball, winning nine out of ten games. Though this is the Comrades first year in organized baseball, Manager Joe Petrovič and his slugging Comrades, expect to finish in first division. J. “world series” between Cleveland and Joliet, to be held at Joliet— first game Sunday, Sept. 1, at K. S. K. J. picnic at Rivals Park; second and third games Monday, Sept. 2, at Richards St. field. The SS. Peter and Paul Society, Joliet branch of the great and harmonious Jugoslavonie Catholic Union, is by far one, if not the most progressive lodges in our community. The biggest aim and object of this organization is to create harmony and discipline among oui so-called foreign element. By FRED WARING The story of the uphill climb of Fred Waring, the leader of the popular orchestra, “Fred W a ring and his Pennsylvanians,” reads like a fiction book. When Fred was very young he turned his attention to music, playing the violin which his sister taught him to play. When Fred entered Penn State College he organized an orchestra called “Waring’s 1 ennsy 1 van ians,’ wrhioh was quickly in demand. This enabled Fred and his boys to earn their way through college. The demand for “Waring’s Pennsylvanians” i n c r e a s e d steadily, even after the members of the orchestra graduated from Penn State. So much, in fact, that they decided to accept a contract for a vaudeville tour, which brought them national prominence. Today the orchestra receives a salary of $6,500 a week. Moreover, in addition, each member of the orchestra receives an average ot $150 a week minimum for his share in radio appearances phonographs, etc. This orchestra is so much ip demand everywhere that it is a problem for Fred Waring to decide which offer to accept. Three hotels in New York City are bidding for his services. Radio, as well as movietone appearances are determined to land him. However, the big movie houses hold most of his attention. The reasons that Fred Waring has achieved such a remarkable success with his orchestra are these: He is a thorough musician and a fine showman. Even when the jazz was in its full, swing Fred always dinged to hi« quiet method of directing the orchestra. His rhythm does not merely consist of so much noise; rather, a melody is always the outstanding feature. Waring and his Pennsylvanians have done more to bring back the popular ballad than any other orchestra. The coming of the jazz had all but put the ballad as extinct; it almost passed out, but now everyone seems to be in love with th‘i ballad again. Louis M. Kolar. * following such a course we are very satisfactorily increasing our membership month by month. The bylaws speak for themse|ves in the way of benefits. They are good, a great help for anyone in need. And thanks to the supreme officers for their staunch leadership. Joliet, all Joliet, everybody in and around this fair city— let’s come out on 1st and 2d of September at the K. S. K. J. celebration and show others and see for ourselves what a great mass of people we are. Let’s co-operate with the American Slovenian followers and boosters of the nationally adopted sport, baseball. Our J. S. K. J. h.as also put a sport movement into effect. A substantial fund is already on hand to reimburse her lodges for promoting sports. In Joliet we have Bro. Anton Skull selected to organize anything he desires. According to present indications, Bro. Skull will have something ready for the next meeting or so. Well, we’ll all meet at the Iv. S. K. J. series and pull for the best team to win. W.elcome, Cleveland! John L.
