DECEMBER 16, 1977 LETO LXXIX. Proti dopolnilom zakona Social Security, ki bodo temu dala zopet trdne finančne temelje, so glasovali pretežno republikanci in večje število konservativnih demokratov. DAYTON, O. — Zvezni sodnik Carl B. Rubin, ki je pred skoraj petimi leti odredil prevažanje šolarjev za dosego popolne integracije javnega šolskega sistema, je včeraj to odredbo razveljavil in dal šolskemu odboru polno svobodo pri vodenju šol in določanju, v katero naj posamezni predeli pošiljajo stroje otroke. WASHINGTON, D.C. KAIRO, Egipt. Gubernatorial Campaign Kick-Off PUBLIC STATEMENT BY STEFAN DEUBEL INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE FOR GOVERNOR OF OHIO (Released to all news media on Friday, Dec. 2, 1!I77) My name: Stefan Detibel, age 03. Bern of German parentage in Romania. At this time I recall the darkest hours of my life. These occurred in 1849, in Leipzig, Germany, v/hen the Communists took away everything I called my own, a net loss of several million marks. I did not have enough money remaining to buj food lor my family. Food and clothing were sent to us by relatives living here in Cleveland. I applied for an immigrant visa to the United States. In 1951 I received the visa which opened the door to America, with hopes for a new beginning. On December 7, 1951, my family and I arrived in Cleveland. It was here that I learned the language, and to walk again on my own. America and her people have been good to us! We are deeply grateful. Ladies and Gentlemen, and members of the news media. I thank you for accepting my invitation. As a newspaper publisher for the past 23 years, I have met mayors, commissioners, state repre: entatives, state senators, governors, United States representatives, United States senators, and the presidents in the White House. I have also met politicians, the winners and the losers. The winners promised us jobs, security, and a better future for all. Where are those promises? What happened? Our streets are still dirty and unsafe. Corruption ond crime are blooming, better than ever. I know many people crying out loud for employment. I have visited city, county and state institutions. Ladies and Gentlemen — a heartbreaking experience. We. the hard working people, are paying millions of dollars to our elected officials and their appointees. What are we, the people getting in return for our tax dollars? More confusion, red tape and bureaucracy! Bureaucracy is currently making a new chapter in our history. Our children in Cleveland are unable to attend their classes, due to bureaucrats. flome people talk about human rights. Here, Ladies and Gentlemen — we as a society, are denying the right of our children to an uninterrupted education. Ladies and Gentlemen, le.’s keep in mind . . . children are the most valuable stock the human race can have. Fire a threat For safe Holidays, a few Sips may Mp More fire-related accidents occur in December than any other month of the year, according to the Underwriters Laboratories Inc. Underwriters offer the following tips for holiday safety. • Use only underwrite^- approved light strings. For outdoor use, only weatherproof lighting and extension cords should be used. ° iCheck all light strings carefully. Before plugging in lights, check each set and extension cords for broken or cracked sockets and plugs, frayed or bare wires or loose connections. Discard unsafe equipment. Be sure bulbs are tight in their sockets. Use rubber light socket gaskets, and replace if needed. Do not work with strings or cords that are plugged in. Never stretch light strings or extension cords. Fasten outdoor lights firmly to protect thorn against wind. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.” It is still true what I said when I ran for Mayor of Cleveland, I quote: “Let’s make our cities and towns a better place to live in, for ourselves arid our children. Let’s do it together.” Until a court test of the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections action barring independent candidates from the Cleveland municipal election, Stefan Deubel, an announced independent candidate, called it “ratten politics,” and said. “I’m going to court.” Again, today, this remains true. We must unite, we must stick together, we must solve the problems we fade together. Rich and poor, black and white, let’s do it together for ourselves and our children. I am not a professional politician. Of these we have plenty. 1 am not a fortune hunter. I am a deeply concerned citizen such as you are. The reasons were: 1) he did not steer his ship on a zig zag course as required during war time, and 2) he was sailing under modified conditions, which left* passageway doors open, and did not seal off compartments. Also courtmartialed were the Port Commanders at Guam and the Phillipines. In 1958, a book titled /Abandon Ship” was published, covering the disaster of the USS Indianapolis, and the subsequent courtmartial proceedings a-gainst those in authority. It’s author is Richard F. Newcomb. Prior to its publication, Joe Klaus was requested by the author to give an account of his experiences, but Joe declined. His name, however, does appear in this book as one of the 316 survivors. | About this time he was inter- p viewed by Forrest Allen of 1he'o Cleveland Press. In July, 1975, when the popular film “Jaws” created such an impression on movie goers, our own Robert Dolgan, Cleveland Plain Dealer reporter, wrote an article on Joe Klaus and another buddy, in connection with that movie. The substance of the article relates to the contentionby an old sailor named Quint, that most of the men lost in the sinking were devoured by sharks. Klaus and his fellow Jurvivor from the Cleveland area were not in agreement with Quint’s appraisal. On Aug. 5, 1975, Joseph F. Klaus was interviewed for one half hour on the TV 5 “Morning Exchange” program, where he related to the viewers his memories of 30 years ago. In July, 1977, Joe and his wife traveled to Groton, Connecticut for the launching of a nuclear submarine, the Indianapolis SSN 697, named in honor of the .sunken ship in WW. i ® II. Mr. Mrs. Al Orehek and Jeanie k 18144 Lake Shore Blvd. « strange gods before me!” To men of Noah’s time, He threatened, “I will wipe out from the earth the men I have created!” And He made it rain for 40 days and 40 nights. Blatantly the citizens of Spdom: and Gomorrah sinned, and God totally destroyed their cities. His own chosen people, so often so unfaithful, He allowed to be led into slavery and exile, and dreadful plagues He sent on those who would not listen to Him. God was a God of majesty and might, of power and vengeance. It did not seem, likely that this was the God who now had taken on flesh and lay peacefully asleep.— a tiny, helpless, unknov/n baby. There were many who thought this way then. All they had heard from the prophets, all they had read in God's word, all they had known fell on stony hearts. They had ears but would not hear; eyes but would not see. This Jesus was not their God, they claimed. Once a,gain, reliving the disobedience of the fallen angels, so many defiantly uttered, “I will not serve!” Jesus came to His own, and even His own would not receive Him. History is a good teacher, but we don’t always learn the lesson. Almost two thousand years later, so much of the world is caught up in the sweetness and lovableness of the baby Jesus, and they forget that He is the almighty God whose word alone was enough to quiet storms, whose gentle touch cured the blind, the deaf, and the lame, and who had power to raise men from the dead. What do I see and experience at Christmas? Simply a baby’s birth? Or the coming of the all-powerful God into the world? Only a childhood memory of what can never be again? Or the genuine worship of a God who lives even now? An empty emotion that never really influences our daily life? Or the total acceptance of a Savior who alone gives meaning to my life? It is not enough for us only to coo lovingly at a plaster figure of our newly-born Savior. If Jesus came to us, we must receive Him and make Him a part of our life. Jesus may have smiled beautifully and winningly as a baby, but as a grown' man, He revealed His divinity and lovingly and insistently called us to follow Him. Because of Him, I can’t ever be the same. For us, what I do on Christmas is not enough. If I honestly believe that I celebrate the birth of my redeeming God on this day, there must be a tomorrow very much like this day, next week very much like this day, next year — all the rest of my life very much like this day. My daily life must be one of faith in Him who came to redeem me. Jesus has come and He continues to come daily. His Theresa Pavlench, Streetsbo-xo, Ohio. Roza Vogel, Tonawanda, New York. Looking back, we may think that Christmas was a more wonderful time then. But today we can find even more of beauty and wonder to appreciate in Christmas. The age-old story of Jesus’ birth has renewed meaning for us. We know that Christmas is a time of' rejoicing in the birth of Jesus into the world, and it is a time of rejoicing in the birth of Christ in our hearts. Christmas is a time of appreciating the goodness of God, of life, and of people. Our appreciation can make this Christmas Day as memorable as any we have ever ex perienced. Madeline MR. IN MRS. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all. in last Friday’s edition about the initiative taken to organize a summer school in Slovenian1 Carinthia for American and Canadian students of Slovenian ; origin. I fervently hope that the project will succeed andi that last Sunday’s meeting at St. Mary’s in Collinwood was| well attended. As former Direc-| tor for Study Abroad at the University of Dayton, I can assure your readers that there is no better way than this to promote an appreciation of a national heritage among the young. I would therefore urge the Slovenian lodges to ge behind this project for their own ultimate benefit. Please keep us informed on the progress of this undertaking. Here in Dayton we are doing what we can to promote our' Slovenian cultural heritage.^ First of all, we now have 14 members in our Slovenian Class, among them two Croa-; tians and one Slovak. Our tea-1 cher is Margie Kokal, daughter of the Joseph Kokals of “Collin-wood. She is doing a super job, proof of which is th at we have very little absenteeism. The basic text is the Gobec-Lončar ‘‘Slovenian Language Manual.” I can’t recommend if too highly, whether for individual or for group study. Incidentally, Volume II has just come out. As we went along we noticed that there were chapters on St. Nicholas and on Christmas in the text. So, what could be more natural than to decide on our own Slovenian Christmas party, —- Slovenian Carols, potica and all. We held it on Monday evening, Dec. 5, at the home of Zora and Charlie Krainz. F'rank Debevec provided the accompaniment on his accor-aioh while the ladies provided the goodies. We learned ‘‘Sveta Noč” and ‘‘Glej, Zvezdice Božje” well enough to sing them on our own at home. This was supplemented by the playing of the record, “Christmas in Slovenia. Now we’re getting ready to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the founding of our Yugoslav Club of Greater Dayton and, of course, the Slovenians will be playing a prominent role in this celebration. February 11th is our Foundation Day. Since this happens to be a Saturday, it was perfectly natural to choose that date for the com' memoration. A local pastor is graciously giving us the use of his facilities for the evening. We shall first have a Mass in which Sts. Cyril and Methodius, the apostle of the Slavic nations, will be invoked, and that will be followed by a typical Slovenian-Croatian get-together. Anyone wishing to join us for the occasion will be most welcome. We’ll even try to provide overnight accommodations. A Blessed Christmas to you, your staff, and to all your readers. May the New Year see a renewed interest in your fine publication. Cordially, (Fr.) Gabriel J. Rus, S.M. That’s how Slovenian Homes got his name, because he always goes to a Slovenian Home to try and think about the solutions to his most baffling cases. “I like it there,” he always says. The two sipped on some beer and thought about the mysterious man. Presently, Stout fell rnanded Stout. “We can’t arrest a man for stealing these items. They were his all along. They don’t belong to the publishing company.” “No, but the newspaper does. Every daj' he walks in and swipes a paper, then wraps up his items in it and walks out without paying.” “Excellent, Homes*” Stout cried. “Where did you learn to be so observant?” “In school.” “John Carroll University?” MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR VESELE PRAZNIKE Ribnica 12 meets Dec. 18 Lodge Ribnica No. 12 will hold their meeting on December 18th.
