AMERICAN IN SPIRIT FOREIGN IN LANGUAGE ONLY AMERICAN HOME SLOVENIAN MORNING DAILY NEWSPAPER NO. 291, CLEVELAND, OHIO, FRIDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 11TH, 1931 LETO XXXIII—VOL. In z odstopom Sulzmanna imamo sedaj definitivno sledeče županske kandidate: I. O. Ford, komunistični kandidat, Ray T. Miller, demokrat, Daniel Morgan, republikanec, F. W. Walz, puntarski demokrat, Peter Witt, neodvisni demokrat. Berani-cha. Pripeljala sta ga v Cleveland, in člani Kluba bodo imeli okusno srnjakovo večerjo 3. januarja, čarovniška predstava Kdor rad vidi čarovniško predstavo, ima lepo priliko v nedeljo večer, ko bo znameniti hrvatski čarovnik Geo. Sarič imel tako predstavo v šolski dvorani sv. Pavla na 40. cesti in St. Clair Ave. Mr. Sarič je eden najboljših hrvatskih čarovnikov. Mr. Charles Zorman Kot se nam poroča je prevzel odlični slovenski pianist Mr. Charles Zorman, mesto organi-sta in zborovodje pri hrvatski cerkvi sv. Nihče ne more voliti 12. jan. 1932, kdor ni do 23. decembra registriran. Oni zbirajo staro obleko in pohištvo. Vse to popravijo in očistijo, na-kar dajo siromakom. Pomagajte torej boy scou-tom .v soboto, 12. decembra. Obiskali bodo 170,'000 družin v mestu ta dan. Sodelujte za pomoč brezposelnim! Dobra uprava Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 11. decembra. V blagajni mesta Milwaukee bo ostalo koncem leta 1931 čistega $2,234.000, potem ko so plačane vse mestne obveznosti. V tem znamenju namerava sklicati Anglija svetovno gospodarsko konferenco. ----o—-- Izvanredna zabava! PIRC, Editors and Publishers Entered as second class matter January 5th, 1909, at the Post Office at Cleveland, Ohio, under the Act of March 3rd, 1879. Ta bo vodil mestni vez pravično in pošteno. Volimo vsi zanj. Poročevalec je rekel: "What a family!" O j strahota, strahota! Pridite v nedeljo v dvorano in obiščite zopet svoje kraje v slikah, katere bo kazal Mr. A. Grdina v dvorani Narodnega Doma in sicer v korist cerkve. Pridejo nekateri moški k tej maši in smrdijo kakor ponečeden salun. V državi New York, je bilo v prvih dveh dneh ustreljenih 6,-793 srn in 20 lovcev. Ah, zakaj ni mogla nikomur zaupati svoje vere vanj, zakaj ni mogla dokazati njegove nedolžnosti ! "čemu to vprašanje?" Which, at first sight, looks very much like so many errors in typesetting, really isn't that after all. It's an old Scotch adage and points out the virtue of thrift. And the Scotch, you may _ __have been in- ■■^■HH formed, are H a thrifty race. Very thrifty—if we are to believe Pall we have heard of them. But whether I Scotch, Scandina->; vian, Irish, German or Slovenian, the same principle holds true and thrift always has been and always • will be regarded as a virtue. A virtue too greatly neglected. (That's why we have depressions and panics.) However, thrift, like sister virtues, is rather hard to practice. No need expounding at great and boresome lengths just how much easier it is to spend money for pleasure and entertainment than it is to save it. We all know how it is. Strange as it may seem, though, there are very many people—other than the Scots, too—whe are able to save money without any outside coercion. These are the ones you see walking around smiling in these days of pinch penny purchasing. These are the rainy days for which they have been buying umbrellas. The laugh's on the non-savers now. But some kindly soul, mindful of his fellowmen's shortcomings, originated the policies of systematic saving, a plan where with a little extra persuasion the individual saves regularly, finally acquiring the saving habit—that most rare virtue. The most popular—and the most common—of these plans i« the Christmas Club. Under this system a stipulated amount is deposited each week. At the end of 50 weeks the depositor is given a "Christmas check" for the full amount of his totaled weekly deposits plus, of course, interest. The amount to be deposited each week is left tc the discretion of the club member and ranges from 25 cents to $20. If one is mindful of his personal budget, the sum deposited regularly is hardly noticed and when Christmas time comes around •ind Santa Claus in the person of the bank presents the handsome check, it truly comes as a Yuletide gift. Not missed when it was being deposited in small amounts, the money presents an auspicious figure when returned. Undoubtedly, it comes in moSt handy when filling out that Christmas list or for the payment of taxes. In mentioning the latter, we might add that a surprising number of people plan the payment of their yearly assessments on a Christmas club basis, taking out a membership which will just cover their taxes at the end of the year. In this manner they are prepared when tax time comes around and Uncle Sam demands his share. The earlier you start becoming a regular member of the Christmas club the easier it is to acquire the saving habit. And each year, you find yourself planning and scheming on just how you can increase your membership over the previous year. It's a great habit and a profitable one. Try it yourself this year and sec. SCOUTS TO AID WELFARE GROUP IN CITY DRIVE appears in show Silver Fox Tribe to do Share in Canvassing District All Day Tomorrow WILL NOT COLLECT Take Orders for Goodwill Industries of Cleveland; Do Good Turn Tomorrow from 8:30 a. m. to 5 p. m. will see Boy Scouts all over Cleveland and its suburbs calling upon 170,000 homes asking housewives if they wish to co-operate with the Goodwill Industries of Cleveland in either accepting a Goodwill bag into which they may place old clothes or if they wish to have a Goodwill truck call for old clothes, furniture, etc. Members of our own Silver Fox Tribe will canvass 2,000 families in this district. If a scout calls at your home he will ask you if you wish to have a Goodwill bag delivered to your house, into which you place old clothes. Or he will ask you if you wish to have a truck call for any old material you have and do not want. You will be asked to sign a card. Under no circumstances do they collect the old clothes themselves. Every scout will wear a green tag-upon which will be his name and troop and the words "Goodwill Good Turn Day." Our boys, in addition, will wear the familiar scotch neckerchief. The Goodwill Industries are supported by the Community Fund. They take old clothes, furniture, household goods, etc., and repair them. The people who are employed to repair this material are men and women who are out of work. The repaired material Is then sold in Goodwill stores throughout the city. Persons too poor to pay for the material are given a chance to work for it. This is not a charity hand-out, but rather an organization in which a chance to work is provided. By having a Goodwill bag in your house you can help thousands of people. When your Goodwill bag is full you simply call the Goodwill Industries, which is located at 2416 E. 9th St., and a truck will be sent out. Please help our own scouts by answering the door on Saturday and either saying "Yes" or "No'.'—that you will accept a Goodwill bag or want"the Goodwill truck to call for the old clothes and furniture you have—and don't want. Please remember that this campaign does'not in any way interfere with the work of our own charity organizations and is approved by Dr. James W. Mally, chairman, and Felix A. Danton, scout master. -— o—- CHURCH BENEFIT Miss Rose Lausche will be one of the hostesses at the card party which will be given by the K. K. LORAIN LASSIES TO HAVE BUSY SEASON REQUIESCANT IN PACE! By ANTONIA R. KURENT Death within the last fortnight has cast his net into the depths of the sea of life, and between the tangled, magnetic, unescapable meshes he has caught, mercilessly, the lives of a loved father and two beloved mothers. Mr. John Popovic, Mrs. Agnes Bratel and Mrs. Gertrude Virant are the honored trio who have left us. Pioneers all, they represented a distinct phase in the history of the Slavs in this country. It is to them and their kind we ; our standing in this great nation. ;irs was the bravery which ventured forth to new and strange soils to make a better home for their peoples. Hardships untold, dangers and sorrows were their heritage as they watched the struggling handful, which represented themselves, grow into the strong and respected community groups of today. God has seen fit to take away from our midst these bridges from the first Slav settlers to the present day. There is nothing He can give us to take their place. But we bow in humble acquiescence before His wisdom and say, "Requiescant in Pace." another artist LIBRARY HAS BIG PROGRAM FOR TUESDAY LORAIN, O.—Did you know that quite a number of Slovenian girls belong to sororities? They do, and one of the most active ones is that of Sigm? Iota Phi group here. Miss Mayme Kotnik was the hostess at her home last Wednesday at the sorority's regular business meeting. Many plans for the coming season were discusscd and approved, among them being a Christmas party and gift exchange to be held during the holiday season at the home of Miss Mayme Primožič. After the regular business session a delicious luncheon was served and a pleasing social followed. The house was artistically decorated, fall flowers being the chief note in the dee orative scheme. Officers for the coming year were also elected at the meeting. The following will take charge of the club's destiny: Miss Anna Ursic, president; Miss Mayme Primožič, secretary and treasurer, and Miss Ann Juha, publicity manager. FACTORY EMPLOYS THOUSAND SLOVENIANS- ONE-HALF OF TOTAL WORKERS not help but become astonished at their speed and skill. And, truly, you wonder, especially, how the dainty feminine workers' hands can motivate with such magical colerity as they "turn collars," "baste," make pockets and buttonholes, ctc. It is amazing. Pressing, it is understood, is the most coveted position in the factory because it is a standing operation and bccausc il is more remunerative. It is a well known fact, though, that all Richman employes arc among the best paid in the clothing manufacturing group. This is no doubt the reason why Miss Anna Entrup, the employment manager, is at times almost stampeded with the crowds of recruits who are anxious to join the Richman corps. The Richman plant proper is not an elaborately equipped building. It is, however, practical and adequate, well kept, lighted and veutillated, and every possible effort is made for the comfort and satisfaction of the workers. A dispensary, with a registered nurse in continual attendance, and a large modem cafeteria, where food prices are unusually reasonable, are anions the major facilities. In addition, there is a recreation hall in which the workers congregate during the lunch houi and amuse themselves at dancing, talk ing and any other desired pastime. Ai orchestra made up of Richman boys and girls furnishes the dance music. That the recreation hall has becom* the workers' own is evidenced by th< picture gallery which has been installec by them on several of the walls. Then arc wedding pictures, baby pictures theatrical and social sccnes, and all o them tell the friendly spirit of the Rich man "family" in "Richntanville." And now that our "lost sheep" hav been found, we certainly do not have t< wnrrv about them. By ANTONIA R. KURENT Where arc they? One thousand Slovenian young men and women. You see them at churches, socials and sports events after sundown, but with the approaching morrow they vanish in the sunlit hours of the day, until another sundown. Where are they ? Oh, that's easy. Just visit "Richmanville," which "is located between Superior and Payne Avenues on Cleveland's E. 55th St., and there you will find our "lost sheep," well provided and busied at converting countless miles of multi-colored woolen cloth into ultra-fashionable Richman suits and overcoats. Yes, indeed, it is interesting to note that one-half of the employes of the Richman factory are Slovenian. And equally as interesting is a tour through "Richmanville." Perhaps the most outstanding characteristic of the plant is the total lack of formality that is so dominant among the officers and departmental heads and the employes. There is no existing, impenetrable wall of superiority and reserve. Instead there is the easit perceived merger of a great "family," that symbolizes unison and understanding. Mr. Charles Richman, the president of the company, is proud of his "family." He knows most of his workers by name and he can tell you a great deal about them. In meeting them at their work, an informal chat is just as much in place as an inquiry about a several thousand dollar order. The workers themselves arc a happy and good-willed group. They are all stockholders and they all strive for individual efficiency. Then after a four-hour tramp, when everybody was exhausted and weary, she invited the hikers to her home for a rest. The rest, however, turned into a birthday party, with Mrs. Turk as hostess. The hikers were served a delicious supper and there was a birthday cake and everything. But because the guests were so tired the program did not exceed the resting and chatting stage, and a pleasant evening was enjoyed nevertheless. Reached Height of Popularity Appearing on Slovenian Radio Broadcasts Undoubtedly one of the most popular of Slovenian duos of all time, Josephine Lausche-Welf and Mary Udovich, who will appear on the monster American Home benefit show, can look tffick with pride upon their record of glorious successes scored throughout their careers. .^i They first came into national prominence as recording artists when the sale of their records rivaled that of any other nationality disks. Not only was there a great demand for their recordings in Slovenian communities throughout the country, but in other foreign districts as well. The phonograph was at the height of its popularity and carried this duet on the crest of its wave. Followed then a series of stage appearances and recitals, where their popularity was more greatly evidenced. Capacity houses everywhere marked ill their performances, and though the advent of radio was sounding the death knell of the phonograph their popularity continued undaunted and their po-sition in the ranks of Slovenian entertainers unquestioned. Then, two years ago, came the Slovenian radio broadcasts, opening up a new field for them. Their splendid voices, their pleasing harmony lost nothing on the ether and they rose to greater heights. Reaching a far largei audience, they made many new friends and admirers not only among the Slovenians, but other nationalities as well. A host of fan mail, coming from all corners of this country, substantiates this. Thus with triumphs recorded in every field of entertainment they have behind them histories as glorious as that of any story book heroines. Now they find themselves with no new worlds tp conquer and have to be content with inc^e.a^ing their fame along the old lines. In appearing on the American Home benefit show they arc once again turning their talents to charitable efforts. Perhaps that is one <}f the reasons for their success. Always have they been willing to do their share for a worthy cause. And so now, once again, we will see them in old familiar roles. Well Ukect roles, too. -o-- PROUD PARENTS Mr. and Mrs. Earnest Marvar of Richmond Rd. announce they are the parents of a baby daughter, who is just two weeks old. "Banjo Buddy" was most probably rehearsing some new numbers for the American Home benefit show. Peace reigned supreme in the Sodja home, when suddenly the rehearsal and the quiet tranquility were shattered by an ear-piercing scream of "Fire!" Smoke and confusion and all bedlam broke loose; up the street came the hoarse, car-sphttmg sound of the fire engine sirens, husky men tramped through the house, leaving ruin and desolation in their wake. The fire was soon under control, but the regular routine of the Sodja home was shattered. Grdina Says EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the fifth of a series of articles dealing with the history, alms, program, administration and achievements of the Boy Scouts of America. In this installment the author refutes some of the mistaken notions concerning tho aims and purposes of the Scout. Movement. The writer is an experienced Scout leader having held executive positions both locally and nationally. He is scoutmaster of the local community troop. By FELIX A. DANTON There is an old adage which says, "Silence is golden." I do not like to abide by it when it comes to refuting some of the mistaken and too often ridiculous notiqns concerning the aims and purposes of the Boy Scouts of America. It would seem that in this (lay and age when scouting has been so universally accepted, that such accusations as "Scouting is a military organization"— that "Scouts are opposed to labor"—that "Boy Scouting is merely folly," etc., would be instantly challenged and corrcctcd. Yet from time to time we arc faced with these vety criticisms. No Militarism Here Let us take the first and most mistaken notion, namely: "Scouting is a military organization." Undoubtedly this notion arises from the fact that wc encourage our scouts to earn the money to buy and wear the official scout uniform. Now, because the scout puts on a uniform it does not follow the organization to which he belongs is a military organization. Because the little tot of 5 or 6 years wears a cowboy suit or a policeman's outfit it does not mean that he is going to be or is a cowboy or policeman or whatever the case may be. On the contrary, the Boy Seoul uniform represents character with t capital ">Q" and it further stands foi peace-time service. When a scout putt on the uniform, that uniform cries " am a s.eput," as Dr. West has so aptl; said. And because that uniform does cry out "I am a scout" it imbues the boy who wears it with a finer sense of responsibility of what it stands for, and challenges him to live up to the ideals of the Boy Scout movement. It stands for peace-time service because the old, the feeble, the child and woman know that uniform stands for courtesy and helpfulness. In times of great national disasters the only persons outside of doctors, nurses and policemen and firemen that have been allowed to go through the lines and cross devastated areas were the scouts with their uniform and neckerchief. Why? Yes, I challenge anyone to show me a finer, braver and more high-spirited gang of boys than the Boy Scouts of America, who daily and foi almost 22 years have gone on doing "good turns," performing cheerfully any given task, even to risking their own lives to help someone else. "Greater love hath no man than that he lay down his life for another" is still as true today as it was 2,000 years ago. Continuing with the question of . I whether scouting is a military organ-■! ization, let me call your attention to : the previous articles, dealing with tho ■ i progress of the scout movement, in •! no instance do you find any reference i to military tactics or drill. Whatever ■ I drill there may be is used only to heip •; form lines quickly and to know how to i conduct oneself in parade or on public 11 demonstrations. I The constitution and bylaws of tho f j Boy Scouts of America say very definitely, "In carrying out the purpose II of the Boy Scout movement, technical a military training and drill shall not be included for the reason that they are * i not equal in value or as suitable for 1! boys of scout age, in training for good y; (Continued on Page 6). Bi? League Trades , THE two most important tojflcs of today in national sport circles are the baseball trades at the annual major league meeting at Chicago, and Mie problem of diminishing the number of major casualties arising during the football season. Local baseball addicts are chiefly •interested in the Indians' attempt to land a good shortstop to plug up the gap on the right side of the infield, a position which has not been satisfactorily filled since the days of Joe Sewell. Cleveland heads are striving to get "Red" Kress, $100,000 player of the St. Louis Browns. Red has seen service at every position in the infield and outfield for the Missouri nine, missing out only in the box and be hind the plate. Toward the latter part of last season we were fortunate in having a friendly chat with two of the St. Louis players. We were informed at that time Kress was not satisfied as a member of the St. Louis club and would welcome a change of atmosphere. We were also told Walter Johnson was seriously thinking of obtaining Kress for his Washington Senators. All this, of course, may not mean a thing, but we feel the Indians will have to step some to get hold of Kress as he is undoubtedly one of the best infieldern in the gamp today. Here's hoping they do! Too Dangerous FORTY fatalities have occurred throughout the national gridiron during the 1931 season, which has yet some charity games on its schedule. Most of these were high school or amateur boys, but two of them were college stars, Sheridan of the Army and Murphy of Columbia University. It seems both of the latter received the fatal blow in attempting to break through the wedge opposing teams had formed after a kickoff. Now the leaders of football are considering the elimination of eitliei the wedge or the kick, with some radicals advocating the abolishment of football entirely. As; to the latter, we scoff and say it's foolish to deprive the Amerieai? youth of such a fine sport as football, but we could listen to a change in the kickoff. Most of the more serious injuries happening during v game, come with the opening kick-off, when a mass of beefies descend upon their opponents with a protective wedge spread around the bal) oarricr, and run all over them. Therefore, something could be done, such as eliminating the kickoff and putting the ball in play on say, the 20-yard line, much of the injury danger would be alleviated. The sole argument against such a change is that the kickoff is one oi the most spectacular plays of football and its elimination would take much away from the game for the spectators, and, you know, as well as we do, just hew mafty hundred thousands American all in this latter category So what? Thrilling Finish in 9 to 8 Mask-Flashes Game Has the Crowd on Edge Action in the Interfrat lassies loop swung into its second week last Wednesday night at the St. Clair Bathhouse before some 500 howling enthusiasts. All the favorites emerged from their respective fracases as expected. although the Silver Masks were hard put to win their tilt from the Plashes in one of the best games ever played in the loop. In a thrilling finish, which had the entire house on edge, the Masks finished on the long end of a 9 to 8 count. The victory practically cinches a position for the Masks in the league playoffs. The entire first half was just a series of short passes and dribbling, marked with great defensive play on both sides. Mae Arthur opened up the scoring with a short shot. Rode sank in a foul. "Jo" Laurich sank in two and Arthur one foul to knot the count at three all as the half ended On a long pass from Doljack, Osi-scki parted meshes with a beautiful side shot to ring in the second half. 'Jo" Laurich made good another foul try and Osiecki heaved in a short one to give the Masks a 7 to 4 lead at the end of the third chukker They never relinquished their slim margin after that. Suhadolnik, En-glehart and Arthur each put in a foul apiece. Pate then looped one In from mid-floor and Malovrh made good on a technical putting the Gr-dinas one point behind. The Plashes launched a frenzied last-minute drive to tie the score, but Joe Kubilus whistle terminated the doings. One of the outstanding bright spots of the setto was the marvelous defense work of the Plashes as a whole xnd "Pran" Malovrh in particular. Last year's champion, the Sokols, sxperienced very little difficulty in hurdling over the Progressives and rung up an impressive 20 to 2 victory over the Euclid Village cagers. Although they missed frequent shots Vie Zaletel's cohorts showed a decided improvement in their floor game. Vera KusJalan bagged five field goals to lead the Gymnasts with 10 points. M. Lebar and Sezon counted on fouls for the Progressives' only scores. The George Washingtons, who surprised last week by taking over the Progressives, were soundly thrasheel by the Comrades, 21 to 5. Snider, Stan-onik and Ruchnechter kept swishing the cords with such monotonous regularity that when the half time whistle blew the Comrades were way out in front, 17 to 2. The George Washingtons tightened in the last half and Sam Zamejc's charges could tally only four more markers. Bruch-nechter led the winners with seven points, while Jaklich potted three fouls to pace the Tree Choppers. Whatever misunderstanding ever existed between organized labor and the Boy Scouts occurred almost 20 years ago when there existed an organization known as the United States Boy Scouts, and which had for its purpose military activities. This organization was not at any time a part of the Boy Scouts of America, which were organized earlier It was because of' the existence of these two movements, whose purposes were as far apart as the poles, that misun< derstandings did arise. However, after careful investigation the leading labor organizations of the country withdrew their objections to the Boy Scouts o( America and since that time there has always been the closest co-operation between the scout movement and organized labor. It is interesting to know that the late Eugene V. Debs, noted Socialist leader, in 1915 wrote: "Free from all taint of militarism there is rnuch in such an organization (the Boy Scouts of America) for the young to commend it and I confess to a liking for its teaching of manliness, its attention to bodily health and vigor, its stimulating outdoors program and its inculcation of principles of mutual kindness and mutual help among its members." The indorsements of scouting do nol end there. It has been approved by the Protestant churches of America, by the Jewish synagogues and by the Catholic Church in America with the approval and blessing of the Pope. Udovic crashed down a 603 on 244, 193 and 166 installments, to blaze the trail for the locals. Debelak's 234, Alich's 217 and Slogar's 214 were other features of the home boys' victory drive. Krueger did nobly for the Coals as they whittled the woods for a 2781 grand total. The winners smashed the timber for a 2875 aggregate. Although they were outhit by the enemy in the doubles event, Udovich and Debelak managed to cop the first and last games of the argument. Udovic whacked out a hefty 648, while Krueger starred foy the Korytas with a 626. Misses Perfect Score on Last Ball as Teammates Hit Hefty 2992 G-W's SWEEP KAY JAYS WIN OVER SIMMS BOY STAR LAID UP Stevie Bernardic, stellar forward of last year's Western Reserve basketball team, is nursing a sore leg and will not see action until after the holidays. Clairwoods Register Upset by Victory Over Slovenian Young Men We take off our hat to Johnny Milavec, Spartan anchor man, for setting a new all-time high for Intel-lodge keglers to shoot at, when he tumbled 298 pins last Sunday, leading his team to a three-game victory over the Pioneers to give them the league lead. Johnny tallied 11 perfect frames in a row, but faltered on his 12th as the 8 and 10 pins stayed up on a pocket hit, this depriving him of a perfect score. Spartans Hit 2992 Although he totalled 642 pins, he was nosed out for high honors by Steve Wysopal's 643. His teammate's individual scores were 203, 214 and 226. Another 600 by Wohlgemuth helped the Spartans set a new three-high with their 2992 grand total on counts of 1020, 976 and 995. The Pioneers lost a tough one in the opener, being nosed out 1020 to 1004. Jimmy Meehan sparkled for the losers with 616. Again the Clairwoods turned in an upset as they took two tilts from the pace setting SYMC. This defeat placed the' Young Men in a triple tie for second place along with Betsy Ross and the George Washingtons. Joe Bokar proved the big nemesis, collecting 621 pins on 214, 173 and 234 games to lead both teams. The Clairwoods jumped into seventh place, vacating the cellar for the first time this season. Choppers Sweep Kay Jays By scoring a clean sweep over the KSKJ's, the George Washingtons again threatened the doorstep of first place and are in the thick of the fight. They cracked out three 900 games, opening with 934 and following with 945 and 943 for a 2882 grand total. Prank "Samson" Drobnic scored the first two games for his team as he hit 222 and 221 to give the Choppers and 8- and 12-pin advantage in the first two settos. He finished with a 214 for a high 651 mark. The Sokols captured two games from the Betsy Rosss in an odd series. Both teams finished with 2754 scores, but the Gymnasts finished in front in the number of games won. Tom Jereb was the. winners' mainstay with 644, while Krall's 614 was high for the victims. Despite the Comrades' two-game victory over the Collonwood Boosters they are ill last place. In the final encounter, both quintets registered 943 but the Comrades proved strongest in the roll off and came out ahead to give them the edge. A. 583 series by Rudy Cctina was the winners' best By EDDIE KOVACIC AT THE RINGSIDE: Again the city of Cleveland responded to the call of the needy as 11,400 boxing fans milled into the Public Hall last night to witness the sixth show sponsored by the Cleveland News for the benefit of the city's poor. The card as whole was a crowd pleasing one, two of the six fights ending in knockouts. In the main go Frankie Simms was in no shape to come out for the fourth round due to badly split lip, thereby giving his opponent, Ernie Schaaf a technical verdict. We gave the first round to Mr. Sweeney, as both heavyweights came cut of their corners cautiously and felt each other out. The second and third rounds went to the Bostonian as he had the Slovenian on the floor for the count of 9 three times in the second chapter. Before the start of the fourth heat, manager Charley O'Connell threw the towel into the ring while Frankie's lip was bleeding profusely. This defeat did not take any prestige from Simms' record, but rather added to the winners, as he looked like a champion throughout the abbreviated encounter. After the fight Schaaf stated: "Frank Siirrims is the hardest hitting guy I ever fought," which is some credit to Frankie as Sharkey's protege has seen action with the world's best heavyweights. Leu Brouillard, world's welterweight champ, won the semi-final from Paul Pirrone of Cleveland in the seventh round or a foul. The best fight of the evening was the Patsy Pirrone-Adolph Heuser lightheavy skirmish, which the former copped after six rounds of gruelling fighting. The decision was very unpopular. In the remaining fights Billy Wallace knock out Prank Bojoiski; Frankie Wallace received the nod over Sammy Farbar and Johnny Fan-took Santiago Zorilla into camp. A total of $34,400 was taken in at the gate, $15,000 of which will go to fill up those empty stockings in Cleveland. pioneers tangle with clairwoods Starting with next Thursday, Dec. 17, ths. boys .iiiterlodge games will be cut shorter in order' to permit the Spectators an early return home.
