NO. 249 Ameriška Domovi ima AMCRICAN IN SPIRIT FORCIGN IN LANGUAGS ONLY SLOVCNIAN MORNING N€WSPAP€R CLEVELAND 3. 0„ FRIDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 18, 1953 LETO Lm — VOL. Toda to ni zakon! Ane št. 4 SDZ in Podružnice št. 25 SŽZ. Na mrtvaškem odru bo ležala v Grdinovem pogrebnem zavodu na E. 62 St., v soboto' pop. ob petih. NEW YORK. — Vsi so že “priznali” svoje zločine. — Obtoženi so veleizdaje in umorstev. Župan Its prišel z mestnimi svetovalci komisiji naproti in jo čitala njihovo nepokorščino in naznanila kazen deželnega kneza. Mariborčani, prestrašeni vsled močne straže, so se še hitreje uklonili kakor Radgončani. škof je imel pridige skozi vies teden in jih poučeval o zmotah luteranstva. With only half an hour of shooting time left out of a" hunting day in which they didnt have a shot, Clarence Timmerman of 3816 Ira Ave., and Harold Hupp of 1462 Newman Ave., Lakewood, decided to cut across a Lorain County soybean field on their way to the car. In the next 26 minutes the two kicked up 10 bouncing bunnies and knocked over seven for the best day’s hunting of the season. The cottontails sat tight in the clumps of mowed soybean stalks and waited until Timmerman or Hupp would push a boot into their hiding place. Then they would take off in high bounce. Remington Makes New Deer Slug: A potent new 28-gague deer slug which combines desirable rifle bullet accuracy characteristics with the short-range safety required by Ohio shotgun hunting for whitetailed deer, was announced by Vic Bracher, Cleveland district manager for Remington Arms. The new slug offers the hunter far more accuracy than the “pun’-kin” ball, Bracher reports. Rifling on the slug gives the bullet stabilizing spin after it is in free air. Addition of the 28-gauge shell completes Remington’s line of deer slugs to inculude 12, 16, 20, 28, and 410 sizes. -------o-------- Beal loSiees Brgles, William — Husband of Rose (iiee Perovich), father of Peter, Joseph, Nicholas, Frank, Sylvia Valencie, Pauline, Mary, Barbara Cook, Katherine Boryance, Rose Mramor. KOVACIC (Continued) In 1891, official Slovenian candidates for the elections were still nominated by the central electoral committee, but the Catholic political group demanded an important influence. In the same year, the Liberals changed the name of their society to “Narodno-napredna stran, ka” (National Progressive Party', while the Catholics founded the “Katoliško-narodna stranka” (National Party). CLAIM sa vmosmm&iSh Lament, both Slovenian political groups supported the Austrian Conservatives who seemed to be less opposed to the Slovenian national rights than the Austrian-German Liberals. In the provincial parliament of Carniola, the Sovenians had 2 separate groups. In 1892 Slovenian Catholics organized the First Slovenian Catholic Congress in Ljubljana .which elaborated a detailed program for a Catholic activity in the public life. In Carinthia. in 1882 Andrej Einspieler established a Slovenian paper “Mir” (Peace) with a Catholic-national program fighting for the rights of the Slovenians at the Slovenian enthenical border. Eight years later, the Carinthian Slovenians founded their “Catholic Political and Economic Society’ as a central organization of the Slovenians in Carinthia. In 1882, the Slovenians in Styria established the “Slovenian Political Society for Lower Styria”. In the Coast land, the leader of the Catholic activity became Dr. Mahnič, who succeeded in directing the paper “Soča” in Gorica, while a new paper “Nova Soča” became the | organ of the Liberals, altho it supported a common political activity. The same program was also the tendency of the Slovenian daily paper “Edinost” (Unity) in Trieste, that was stopped and confiscated by the Italians after World War I. After Taafe, duke Alfred Win-dischgraetz became in 1893 the Austrian Prime Minister. In Carniola, the first and the only Slovenian provincial president was replaced by a German. Windisch-graetz’s government was supported by a group of Concervatives, the Poles, and the Austrian - German Liberals. In 1895, the Slovenians aided by the Czechs demanded Slovenian classes for the Gymnasia in Celje. The Parliament voted in favor of them, but the government opposed that request and fell. The new Prime Minister, the Polish count Badeni reorganized the electoral laws granting more votes to the peasants. Since he tried to grant more rights to Slavic languages, the Germans succeeded in replacing him with different short-lasted governments. During that time the struggle for the equality of the Savic languages within the Austrian monarchy gradually increased and the Slavs defended their rights against the Germans who tended to transform the state into a Germanspeaking country.. That national fight against the inequality of the languages and national groups lasted to the end of the monarchy and caused the final dissolution of the Hapsburg monarchy in 1918. In Slovenia, in 1896, the “Yugoslav Socialist Democratic Party” was founded as the third Slovenian group, but it has never succeeded to win a large number of followers. The Catholics devoted. their activity to the economic development of the country and the economic defense of the peasants and workers from business groups by organizing the co-operative move- ment throughuot the country. Their new leaders became the democratic and social educated Andrej Kalan, Dr. Šušteršič, and Dr. Janez E. Krek. Due to the fall of the prices of agricultural products and the increased taxes, from some part of Slovenia there was a very important emigration to Westphalia in Germany and to the United States. Since 1894, Dr. Krek, started to organize groups of industrial workers and in 1902 the Slovenian Christian -Social Union was established as a central Catholic cultural society. In 1906, the Catholics founded their own society for physical education, “Orel” (The Eagle). The division into political groups increased so far that cooperatives of the Catholic-National Party belonged to a different central organization than the cooperatives of the Liberals who organized a number of cooperatives in the Slovenian part of Styria. The Liberal movement among the Slovenians stood under the ideological influence of Prof. Masaryk in Prague, where many Slovenians attended the Czech University. The younger Liberal leaders Gregor Žerjav, Albert Kramer, and Adolf Kramer, and Adolf Ribnikar paid much attention to the development of cultural and national defense among the Slovenians. In 1900, the Catholics organized the second Catholic Congress in Ljubljana to develop their program in all the fields of the national life. That Catholic organizatoric movement with its center in Carniola influenced similar movements in the rest of the Slovenian provinces. In Styria, Dr. Korošec, the editor of the paper “Slovenski gospodar” and the later Slovenian political leader, became the organizer of the Catholic youth agaiinst the Ger-manization, while the Germans financially supported by the “Sued-mark” actually started to buy Slovenian farm land.. Since 1906, the Slovenians in Styria were divided into the National Party for Stvria and the Catholic Peasants’ Union, while in the Coastland the former rivalry partlv ceased.
