Take katastrofe so bile Butale do sedaj srečno obvarovane. Take so pač gasilske veselice v Butalah. “Moja? Dozdaj ne. Toda...” “Če me hoče? Saj vem, da me ima rada.” “Kes? Kdo ti je to povedal?” Janez je postajal zloben. “Čutim.” “Čutiš? Tako? ... Vtepel si si CHICAGO, ILL. FEMALE HELP WORK IN NEIGHBORHOOD We need good Slovenian women. No experience necessary. Pavletu je bilo težko. : “Saj mi je rekla.” Kakor da bi udarila strela v Janeza. “Tebi? Kaj ti je rekla?” Težko je čakal odgovora. “Da lahko...” Ni mu hotelo takoj na dan. “Da smem upati.” “To... to ti je rekla?” Zdaj je zmagoval Pavle. “Da!” “Ni res! Reci, da ni res!” “Res je!” Jekleno so zvenele besede. Če ni bil to samo priročen izgovor? Cleveland, O., 15 sept. 1967. A saj mu bo Dana povedala vse. Upal bo in potrpežljivo ča-val. In to sta vedeli Stana in Agna. No, pa če se malo zlaže! Saj ne bo nikomur škodovala. “Jutri odideta Košaka naravnost na Bistrico in v Ljubljano.” “Kako to?” je zanimalo vse. “Ne vem. Samo to sta mi rekla. In jaz ... jaz se jima pridružim.” Presenečeni so bili. Kako, da kar na lepem razbija družbo? Sava’s iOfih Convention Review During the Labor Day weekend the Slovenian Academics in America gathered in Cleveland to attend their Tenth Annual Convention which this year for the first time was held on the grounds of the Western Reserve University. The organization had reached its tenth year unostentatiously, emphasizing the fact only when, the time for the convention, was near. It does not appear ten years old; during the meetings one could see mostly young people, some of them only with young ideas, very organized minds,, determined to make Sava stronger, but not knowing how, dedicated, distrustful of people whd criticize the organization, inspired by responsibility, human. Observing the proceedings of the convention one could not help but marvel at the efforts of these people, tho one hopes that they would learn by experience, their own and of other people, since only experience could give them guide-lines so necessary for purposeful, successful organization. Sava had, to a degree, achieved the aim which motivated the young intellectuals ten years ago to form the organization. It unites the Slovenian academics, intellectuals and professional people in North American continent on basis not only of their nationality but on their careers, accomplishments, their personal striving for improvement and the collection of knowledge. Individuals who would otherwise never know of each other, much less become acquainted, are now, in Sava, exchanging their opinions, debating their views and are able to see some of their ideas put into action. Through the organization the second generation Slovenians are able to maintain, the Slovenian language adequately as their second language, learn of the history of their grandfathers, broaden their views to the outside of the geographical boundary of this continent and participate in social and cultural activities with other Slovenians. It is, all in all, a good beginning. The seed had been planted, had budded and is now on its way to a healthy growth. But for every organism to gather strength and flourish, two things are necessary; the quantity in parts that compose the body and, the quality of the energy that holds the body together. Sava is one of the few organizations which could congregate the most brain power, collect the most faculty, store the most ideas. It should be able to work on much larger scale, attract more people to its membership and originate the kind of projects that would interest not only the young, the students and the undergraduates, but also the older intellectuals, the professionals, people who have finished their studies in. schools and are now students of life. Only then, the organization would stay effective, active and woud fulfill its complete purpose. Except for a few worthwhile ideas that were nearly killed at the tenth convention when they should have been made a vital projects, the meeting of the Sava members was important and useful. It strengthened the ties between, the members and gave them a new fire for the year ahead. Marija Cerar -----o------ United Ossitnral Program SHORTS on Rain Cost Sox 300,000 — Short Chicago, 111. — General Manager Ed Short believes that the White Sox home attendance would have passed the million mark by Sept. 1 if the club had had a better break in the weather. The White Sox home attendance of 774,308 is remarkably small, but Short said the reason for this was because “ ... we lost 300,000 in attendance as a result of seven rain-outs.” Short revealed that 170,000 tickets purchased in advance were refunded or exchanged as a result of the postponements. He said an additional 130,000 tickets would have been sold at the gate. “I can’t recall a year when the weather has hurt so much,” Short said. “In addition to the rainouts, we had six games delayed (at the start) anwyhere from 30 minutes to two hours. “When you have weather like that, it simply discourages people from coming to the park. They see that the weather is bad and decide to stay home.” Yank 12:30 Luncheon Tilt Unlikely to Be Steady Diet New York, N.Y. — The Yankees’ experiment with a “Businessmen’s Luncheon” game starting at 12:30 was not an overwhelming success. Yugoslav Ooosuiar Servise For Mh Ohio Cleveland, O. — The Federation of Slovenian National Homes takes great pleasure in releasing notice that the S.F.R. Yugoslav Consulate General in Pittsburgh will shortly open a Consulate Agency in Cleveland, with Anton Stipanic in charge. Both Mr. Stipanic and Consul General Zlatan Sazunic personally told the writer on September 3rd that the Cleveland office will open as soon as suitable office space is rented. Mr. Stipanic is also seeking a three-bedroom furnished home or apartment for his family. According to Mr. Stipanic this Cleveland area office will be complete in all respects as to consular matters it will handle. Basically this office can be of assistance to anyone having a special interest in or wishing to transfer property in Yugoslavia, inheritance matters in Yugoslavia, tourist information for groups, information on trade either import or export, legalization of all documents, etc. As the office opens and its services become better known to Yugoslavs and the community as a whole, these services will become well appreciated by all. The Federation has exerted considerable effort and correspondence for the past several years in the effort to bring this office to Cleveland. At the same time our organization. has been trying to have our USA State Department and the Yugoslav State Department agree to open a U.S. Consular office in Ljubljana for the convenience of visitors to Slovenia. We understand that several other Slovenian organizations have joined our efforts, and we wish to extend to them our appreciation for joining in this en-1 deavor. While the Federation stays strictly clear of any political activity, we do urge you to vote for the candidates who you think will do best for your community and state, and for the levies and bonds you want to pay for, and against those who are for special interests and for which you will pay. Homes ----------------o----- Sievenska Pristava To remember the past is both necessary and meritorious. But, to recall it in the light of the present and especially with a gaze toward the future is all the more tremendous. Such is the case with Slovenska Pristava. It started out as nothing but the dream of men and women. Their dream was to erect a memorial to the tens of thousands who suffered during World War II. But, their memorial was to take on an even greater significance. The people all gave of their time and energy to erect the chapel as a monument to the past, but, they did n.ot neglect the needs of the present. They sought to combine patriotism with recreation and enable a small part of the Slovenian spirit to rekindle itself among the people of Cleveland, Ohio. When I first saw the farm, it was virtually nothing. But, the hard work of the people has built this up to an establishment Slovenians can well be proud of. The youth as well as the adults can enjoy not only the serene atmosphere of the country but also the convenience of a swimming pool, ski slope and many other recreational facilities. I truly believe that such an establishment is most praiseworthy and most deserving of participation and support. I invite all of you to “Vinska trgatev”, on September 24. There will be a dance where you can enjoy yourself and also remember the sacrifice which has enabled us all to do so. Sunday, October 8, 1967 at 2:00 p.m. Music will be furnished by Joe White and his Orchestra from 4:30 on. BEYOND PLANNERS' COMPUTERIZATION This is an age when great stress is laid on efficiency. Look at the ads in the papers, and yem will find employment situations that require technicians, programmers and disciplines of sophisticated minds that are required for the age of automation and computerization. Scientists, economists, and politicians are building careers in working out and applying new theories of managing the economy, the money or practically anything you care to name. There is a basic distrust of natural forces. And yet, paradoxically, everywhere you turn in nature, you find a finely balanced mechanism at work with an efficiency that man can never hope to equal. Speaking of automation and computerization — is there anything that can equal the automatic ebb and flow of supply and demand in a free market? Millions of businessmen, farmers, manufacturers, financiers and industries of all kinds make decisions each day in accordance with the needs and demands of the marketplace. No machine can make these decisions and no planner can ever hope to program them in a computer. The American retail distribution system is an excellent example of how cur wants are satisfied in the free market. Retail merchants in every line, regardless of whether they represent chain or independent outlets, respond with a sensitiveness to changing markets and consumer desires that leaves the planner with his slide rule at the starting post. In the inflationary era of today, the free market and our mass-distribution system automatically assure consumers of the fairest prices possible commensurate with the natural laws of supply and demand. No man-made automated economic system can do as much. St. Vitus Men s Bowling League September 7, 1967 As the season opened, new faces and new teams (backers) appeared. (Credit: Belgium’s Finer Foods) ADMINISTRATION MUST PROVE CASE ON TAX INCREASE. The President’s request for a 10% surtax on individuals and corporations in Federal taxes has met with a cool reception in the Congress, and from the mail that I have received it is obvious that most taxpayers received it coldly. The Administration maintains that a tax boost is required to contain its spending deficits and curb inflation. Like Vietnam and many of our cities, our Nation also is in a fiscal crisis. Even if this tax boost is approved, a deficit of $14-18 billion is expected this year. Without approval, that deficit will be $28 billion. The Administration still insists on spending more than it takes in and Congress has done little to trim this spending. Some of us have tried very hard, with but scant success. The Administration and the Congress must establish priorities. We must become selective and prudent to reduce expenditures. Whether sufficient funds can be trimmed to avoid a boost remains to be proved. But this, I believe, the American people will demand. They want a demonstration, of good fiscal faith before deciding whether the added tax is really necessary. FEDERAL PAYROLL CONTINUES TO GROW. In spite of the gigantic Federal debt and the need to reduce governmental spending, the Administration continues to increase the size of the Federal bureaucracy. During the last fiscal year, which ended July 1st, 242,109 persons were added to the Federal payrolls. Yet, we all recall that the President announced a “freeze” order on government employees. Sept. 20, 1966. It is obvious that the “freeze” became a rapid “thaw”. With this steady rise in- the number of Federal workers, more than $2 billion has been: added to the burden of American taxpayers in financing their salaries and other Administrative costs. The President should review this situation and see that his original order is placed into effect. A $2 billion reduction in spending is sorely needed at this time, and effective reductions could be made ip the government payroll without impairing necessary operations or services. vation of our liberties and the safeguarding of our rights. It was the intention of the framers of our Constitution to keep the true power in the hands of the people. We must all work to see that it remains there. LIVING COSTS CONTINUE UP WARD SPIRAL. Living costs, which have been rising month after month this year, took another jump July. The Labor Department’s consumer price index rose to 116.5 per cent of the 1957-59 average from the June level of 116 per cent, was the biggest jump in nine months. Grocery prices sparked the rise. There also were increases the cost of consumer services, mort gage interest rates and property taxes. So far this year living costs have advanced 1.6 percent and there is no end in sight. From pre sent indications the cost of living will rise higher this year than the 1966 rise of 3.3 percent. This inflationary trend is directly related to the deficit spending policies of the Federal government. “Eat your vegetables!” is an age-old exhortation by mothers around the country, and it’s no surprise that most of us growing up regarded assorted greens with little love and less respect. However, vegetables have delicious personalities and need only a little TLC (Tender Loving Care) to bring out their best sides. In the vegetable world, the prize goes not to the biggest and the oldest, but to the smallest and youngest — the so-called “fancy” vegetables. The sweet taste and crisp texture of the baby vegetables is one reason why they are enjoyed by gourmets all over the world. There is no substitution for quality when it comes to vegetables. One reason why Belgian canned fancy vegetables are so highly prized by epicures is the typically Belgian technique of cultivating the prime specimens — and picking them while they are still very young, tender, and flavorful. Tiny peas, baby carrots, young asparagus, baby lima beans, little Brus- sels sprouts are very popular—prov- dishes. ir.g that in the culinary realm, it’s the little things that count! In America, most homemakers give vegetables a raw deal; they’re either undercooked, or overdrowned. The best way to bring out the hidden, subtle flavor of canned vegetables is by first draining off half the liquid. Then they should be simmered slowly in the remaining liquid until it is reduced by one half. A careful choice of seasonings — and a light-handed approach when adding them — will assure a number of tasty variations. Little peas, for instance, take on a gourmet personality if a pinch of mint, a touch of onion, and a sprinkle of ground pepper are added with culinary care. While fine vegetables plainly cooked are delicious, the real fun comes in “fancifying”. The chefs at the famous Brussels Restaurant in New York, acknowledged by gourmet authorities to be among the finest eating places in the world, suggest “saucy” treatments for really stop-and-take-notice vegetable Sauce Mornay 1 tablespoon butter 1 tablespoon flour % cup milk % cup grated Swiss cheese Vz teaspoon salt Drain carrots, wrap in ham slices, place in buttered casserole. Cover with Sauce Mornay. Top with ham, and heat at 350° in oven for 15 minutes, finish under broiler to brown sauce to bubbly point. Asparagus usually served with a Hollandaise sauce is a delicious companion to almost any variety of meat. Now, you can try a new version of this popular topping, Sauce Maltaise, suggested by the chefs at the Brussels Restaurant. Here’s how to give the tasty Belgian asparagus a “saucier” personality. Asparagus Brussels Style 1 can Belgian asparagus Sauce Maltaise Sauce Maltaise 2 egg yolks Vz tablespoons orange juice 2-4 oz. butter pinch cayenne pepper salt and pepper grated orange rind. Put egg yolks, seasonings, and orange juice into the top of a double boiler. Whisk over hot water until sauce begins to thicken. Add the butter jn very small pieces, whisking in each pat and allowing it to melt before adding the next. Do NOT boil or it will curdle. If too thick, add a little cream. Spoon Sauce Mornay over asparagus, sprinkle grated orange rind on top. A little ingenuity can go a long way toward making a routine vegetable dish into a rare and memorable creation. While the little fancy vegetables are delicious “as is,” they are even better when, a little culinary magic on your part transforms them. You’ll find that the age old mother’s cry of “Eat your vegetables!” will be a thing of the past — as your family happily takes a “fancy’’ to your vegetable cookery! Poslal Civil Servios mil ANNIVERSARY OF U.S. CONSTITUTION. September 17th will mark the 180th anniversary of the RAISINS: FORTUNE FROM A FAILURE A failure turned into a fortune, is the story of those popu lar, dried-fruit tidbits — raisins. Legend has it that the vineyards in the Near East about 400 B.C., produced such bountiful crops that many grapes were left on the vine to wither and blow away. But by chance some of the sun-dried grapes were tasted, enjoyed and proclaimed fine eating. So even though dried up grapes had been known for thousands of years, it looked like a tragedy to California grape growers when their crop dried up on the vines during the long, hot summer of 1373. In desperation one grower shipped his crop to market anyway ... and California’s first commercial raisins sold like the traditional hotcakes. That first year, a total of SSfcZ heldt —M00 20-pound boxes of raisins were marketed. (Credit: Belgium’s duced from this popular grape. Finer Foods) Postmaster General Lawrence F. O’Brien announced that Civil Service status will be extended beginning September 15 to thousands of irregular part-time postal jobs, according to word received by officer in charge Francis J. Lang. As many as possible of these temporary positions will be eliminated, and a new category of hourly rate regular employees will handle part-time work on a regularly scheduled basis. Hourly rate regulars must qualify for their jobs through the same test required of full-time career postal clerks and letter carriers. Unlike temporaries, hourly rate regulars are scheduled for a definite amount of work each week, and they are eligible for all Civil Service benefits. Mr. O’Brien said that the program will be instituted as needed in, some 2,000 Post Offices — all those with 25 or more employees. Temporary appointments, which frequently are made without examination, will be discontinued except under specific authorization, such as that for Christmas help and hiring done in accord with President Johnson’s Youth Opportunity Campaign. These types of positions are usually filled by students. Christmas helpers are often chosen from among those persons who have passed the examination for summer seasonal assistant. YOC standards require that students maintain, satisfactory academic standing in order to hold postal employment. The purpose of the new program is to stablize the work force, tap new sources for the postal labor market, and to retain qualified persons in part-time positions, Mr. O’Brien said. Turnover among temporaries has been almost eight times as high as regular, and it has been costly in terms of inefficient production and the constant need for the training of new recruits. We require that our employees provide the public with the best possible service,” the Postmaster General said. “We ask no less of an employee merely because he is a part-time worker, and we ought to treat him with no less consideration. He should be entitled to career benefits comparable to those of any other career postal employee.” Temnorary employees already on Post Office rolls will have the op-nortunity to qualify for career status by taking the Civil Service examination. All those who achieve a nassing score by December 31 will be continued on the rolls and offered career employment as vacancies occur. Additional hourly rate regulars will be hired as needed. Candidates will qualify through the testing procedure, and they will be hired from a Civil Service register of eligibles.
