(More photos on page 8 — Photo by Stefan Vesel.) Marjana Lipovšek dazzles fans in benefit concert A book about Slovenia’s greatest architect Jože Plečnik (1872-1957) has recently been Published. It is titled "Plečnik: The Complete Works.” and is written by Peter Krecic. Written by the world’s foremost expert on Plečnik—and boasting a remarkable array of Photography and reproductions of original sketches and watercolors — Plečnik: The Complete Works is the most comprehensive and incisive monograph to date on this trailblazing and long-overlooked master. Plečnik Provides a complete chronological tour through the creative and professional life of this complex figure, in all his triumphs and frustrations. Most importantly, it confirms Plečnik’s status as an artist who effectively fused his field’s aesthetic preoccupations with a deep concern for functional city planning, who cotirageously integrated his homeland’s rich spiritual and folkloric history into both civic and private structures — and whose designs were already articulating the spirit of modernism even as the modernist debate was playing Itself out in the more visible architectural centers of the world. The volume spans the entirety °f PleCnik’s career, beginning with his early years in Vienna, where he served as apprentice to Otto Wagner and began Seating extraordinary sket-ches of his own amidst that city’s vibrant Secessionist artistic movement. From there, it follows Plečnik to majestic Prague, where he began a teaching career. Only after World War One did Plečnik return to his beloved Slovenia, where he virtually rebuilt his hometown of Ljubljana — a dizzying feat of city planning that spanned 15 years and covered the creation 0r restoration of squares, bridges, and roadways, churches and monasteries, libraries and universities, towering facades and minute interior fixtures. That during this time Plečnik was also amassing a near-cult following as head of architecture at the newly-founded University of Ljubl-Jana renders this designing streak all the more wonderous as does the fact that nearly everything Plečnik designed for the city ultimately got built. PleCnik’s star dimmed somewhat after WWII when bis Slovenian nationalism clashed with the partisan beliefs of younger architects in Marshal Tito’s Yugoslavia. Despite that, he had gained considerable recognition in his own land, and his final projects included plans for the new Slovenian Parliament building — as well as several striking monuments dedicated to the Struggle for National Liberation. Since the Pompidou restrospective, Plečnik’s reputation as a pioneering modernist and exemplary urban planner has only widened. Richly illustrated and brilliantly narrated,Plečnik: The Complete Works provides a first-rate survey of an architect The daily newspapers have been headlining the many layoffs of employees. In talking with some of those who lost their positions, they seem to be lost with their situation and wonder how they cope without a job. The first morning after they are out of work, the unemployed should look outside and see if the sun came up. Seeing the sun rising, the person without work should be comforted that the world did not come to an end. What to do with all that free time? There are hundreds of ways to keep occupied and listed here are 11. We hope this list will be of use to you. 1. — Research your family tree, writing to the Mormons in Utah for help and also if your parents came from Slovenia, write to their village church for genealogical data. 2- — Research your neighborhood’s history going to County recorders office and also to the main library in your town. 3. — Do volunteer work in hospitals and churches, schools. There is always a lot of work there. 4. — Write for the neighborhood papers and also the ethnic papers like the American Home. Who knows, you may be a future novelist or poet laureate. 5. — Take a course in a language such as Spanish, German or Slovenian. Learn the language with its grammar so that you can speak it flawlessly. 6. — Take more interest in your old hobbies; stamp col- whose legacy is still just beginning to be understood. About the Author: Peter Krečič has been director of the Museum of Architecture and Industrial Design of Ljubljana since 1978, in charge of the Plečnik archives. He is a professor of architecture at the University of Ljubljana. The book contains 256 pages with 68 full color and 224 black and white illustrations. It is published by Whitney Library of Design in 1993 (693-10). Publishers price is $65.00. _______ Thanks to John Mercina for bringing this book to our attention. lecting can take a lot of time and you will be surprised how the time will fly. Of course there’s other hobbies: photography (look how in demand Tony Grdina has become), video taping, painting art works, etc. 7. — Take short bus trips to scenic attractions. The bus lines will advise you of their trips. Just call them on the phone. 8. — Join clubs, church, civic, political and any others that are out there. 9. Learn to play a musical instrument such as a piano, button box accordion, or even a harmonica. You will be surprised yourself on how much musical talent you have. 10. — Take a course in public speaking; there are Toastmaster training groups that will improve your speaking technique. When you are interviewed, this speaking improvement will help you impress the future employer. 11. — Close your eyes and pretend that all your worldly possessions were suddenly taken away and all your friends left you. Then, 30 minutes later, pretend you have received them all back again. You’ll realize you’re not so badly off after all. These are just a few of the many things you can do to self-improvement. Remember that this free time is given to you, don’t waste it by feeling blue or sorry about your situation. Though we look forward to our retirement some day, you are not guaranteed that you will be around to enjoy it. —Vince Gostilna The name Lipovšek is so well known in the musical world that just the mention of it brings feelings of pride to Slovenians wherever they live. And so, the Chicago Slovenian community felt joy and pleasure at the concert and reception of Marjana Lipovšek held in Chicago on December 4. Excitement pervaded the hall as she entered with a wave and “Dober dan’’ before beginning her program of songs that showed her dazzling dramatic style and rich mezzo-soprano sound. We heard well-known Slovenian folksongs, Moj očka so mi rekli, Sem mislil snoč’ na vas iti, Meglice dol’ padajo, and Točila je čarno vince, musically arranged by her father as well as songs by Lucijan Marija Škerjanc. Marjana Lipovšek is the daughter of Marjan Lipovšek, leading musical figure in Slovenia. His piano arrangements as accompaniment to songs on this program were masterfully done by Dr. Ludmilla Lazar, professor of music at Roosevelt University where the concert was held. Dr. Lazar’s virtuosity was evident and provided the audience with an opportunity to hear contemporary Slovenian music. To begin the program, a set of significant Slovenian poems was beautifully articulated by Dr. Tadej Battelino, a visitor to Chicago during his yearlong fellowship studies at Loyola University Hospital. This prelude of poetry seemed very appropriate to an afternoon of music, all spoken or sung in Slovenian. In the audience besides Slovenians from Chicago, Joliet, Milwaukee and other cities were professors and students of the Roosevelt University College of Music and opera-lovers who have been following Mme. LipovSek’s career as a leading Wagnerian mezzosoprano. Her rich and melodious singing and dramatic interpretation of leading roles in the operas of Richard Wagner attracted the attention of the Lyric Opera of Chicago who invited her debut performance in Chicago this year. She is performing in Die Walkure, the second of the Lyric’s four season production of the Ring of the Neibulungen and we would not be surprised to see her returning for a future production before the four years is over. Rave reviews by distinguished music critics have especially praised her as “Fricka,” a role (Continued on page 2) AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA, JANUARY 20, 1994 Dazzles... (Continued from page 1 she has made her own in opera houses throughout Europe. For her American debut at the Lyric she again plays Fricka, to whom she gives a new interpretation and dimension. We certain hope to see and hear Marjana Lipovšek again in Chicago. The Slovenian Cultural Center, sponsors of the afternoon with Marjana Lipovšek, wishes to thank everyone for your attendance and generosity of donations that are directed to the building fund. Kuhar Chapter V THE TREASURE But the land located by Diemer and Dana Streets where a lazy creek slowly flowed for the 100 head of cows and pastureland would now become the house of God for these Slovenian immigrants and their offspring. But these historical facts did not matter very much as the sounding of the three iron cast bells, honoring the Holy Trinity, the Virgin Mary, and St. Nicholas, bellowed in different notes and tones for the faithful to come and worship. Through the small rectangular windows by the inside oak doors one could see the in-layed strips of colored tile, brown, yellow, and a light leading toward the main altar. As the doors opened up the eyes cast upwards to see all that was necessary without reading one word in the bible if one were truly a believer. The death of Christ on the Cross. The Resurrection. The Ascension. And the coming of the Holy Spirit. The polished and bronzed tabernacle stood silently in the center by the old high altar, as was known and referred to by the old timers who remembered when the Mass was said in Latin. Centered on the grandine, the tabernacle rested on this ledge above and behind the altar where the candlesticks and cross resided. Glancing above the old altar was the stunning sight of the baldacchino, the ornate designed marble structure in the shape of a canopy that contained not only the tabernacle but also the crucifix scene and was flanked on both sides by the writers of the epistles with a solid marble WaM in an off-white colored Pattern. behind the marble wall was the walkway connecting the two sacristies: one for the Priests and the other for the altar-boys. More than 20 years had passed since Father Gralc had offered his first Mass. For nearly each morning over the last 20+ years his main responsibility, as well as all other priests around the world, would be to share the Holy Eucharist and Word of God with the faithful, be they one or some, or many. And at the conclusion of each Mass he would say in the same manner “In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord...” But after today’s service Father Gralc waited to receive the telephone call from John to see once and for all if there would be any outcome of Stara Mama’s last words to John. Father Gralc received the call a bit after the 8:30 a.m. Mass and walked to Stara Mama’s house which was only five minutes away by foot. Stara Mama’s house was actually two houses situated on one lot of land. In the front was the larger house, used to support Stara Mama with a host of renters and boarders that had enabled her to survive for so many decades on this curving street simply known as East 62nd Street. Only 20 feet separated one structure from the other with the smaller house in the back. To the sides of both houses were small tracts of soil where the accumulated mounds of manure, peat moss, decomposed pieces of coffee grinds, orange peels, and leaves had carefully and continuously provided the beauty and nourishment for Stara Mama and others. All the time Stara Mama had mixed this strange assortment of ingredients into the soil so that each spring and fall God’s beauty would display her treasure to one and all. John was already waiting for Father Gralc with a piping hot cup of coffee in one hand and a shovel in the other. After a few swigs of the coffee John and Father Gralc began the task of digging into the soil. More than 30 minutes of turning and digging had passed when John thought to himself that perhaps Stara Mama had played a hoax on him. “There’s nothing here,” said John to the priest. “Have faith,” said Father Gralc. “You must have faith. Don’t give up so easily. Let’s try for another 30 minutes. If we don’t find anything, then we’ll call it a day. OK?” “Okay.” “Was there anything else” asked Father Gralc, “that Stara Mama mentioned to you, John, about the land?” “Nothing else special,” said John in a slow manner, “ except what I’ve already told yoy. — The only other thing I can think of is that Stara Mama had a fondness for all the ingredients she would put in the compost pile.” “Well,” said Father Gralc, “then I’ll go work by the pile. If she would think and work there more than anywhere else it would ■ be the most logical spot to hide something.” Father Gralc walked swiftly toward the compost pile. He struck the forged shovel into the soil with all his might, pressing down hard on the top portion of the head of the shovel and lifting up the blackened earth to be placed on a rising mound of dirt and clay. He continued the process over and over again until there was a large clump of black, brown, red, and yellow ground to his left. He had dug down to approximately four feet when his shovel hit a hardened object. Father Gralc kept hitting the thing until he was convinced that it was not the root of a former tree, a rock, or some dead animal. It was metal. He knelt down on his knees and began to scrape off the soil on the metal object with his bare hands. “John. John! Come quickly! I think I’ve found the object. Hurry!” John ran over to the priest just like a little school boy with a new toy. John had the look of determination on his face that he would at last come to understand the words and world of Stara Mama. “John,” said Father Gralc, puffing and huffing in the cool autumn air, “let’s push our shovels together from different angels and see if we can lift whatever is stuck here. Let’s do it on the count of three... “One, two, threeeeee...” They pushed with all their might, forcing the metal object to move closer toward them. But the object landed in a bent angle. They pushed together again and finally forced the metal object closer. “John, let’s drop our shovels and pick up this container.” Both John and Father Gralc lifted the container further up, straining their backs and legs with pain surging throughout their bodies, like never before, throbbing and pounding every inch of muscle and bone. They lifted again, finally rais- ing the container in the air and 3 over to the mount of dirt. They both sat down and wiped their brows with their dirty hands, disregarding how they looked. The air hung in silence as they both looked into the sky with a sense of relief but still not knowing what was inside the metal object. “John,” said Father Gralc, “how about getting an old towel or rag from inside the house.” He brought it and handed it over to Father Gralc. Father Gralc began to wipe off the hardened soil from the metal object and could slowly see that there was an inscription in the center. The words read: “Hinj. Fužin.” —(End of Chapter V)— (To Be Continued) Happy New Year Happy and Healthy New Year to you all. We were in Florida for three weeks. It'S 1-216-234-2658 1-800-294-3410 Drinking and Driving Under the Influence What Few People Understand The temptation to celebrate with alcoholic beverages is commonplace. Television, radio and the print media bombard the public with advertisements to convince you that drinking is a required and acceptable way to have fun and entertain. At the same time, well meaning employers, social clubs, and our own friends and family will invite us to parties whete alcoholic beverages are served. Meanwhile, few if any of these people will worry about how you are going to get home after you drink, and the reality of the situation is that most people will get behind the wheel of their own car and hit the road. If you do this, you are going to end up in more trouble than you can imagine. Ohio’s drunk driving laws are being made tougher in an attempt to keep the roads clear of drivers who are under the influence of alcohol. The re-cent amendments to the Ohio law on D.U.I. offenses include immediate confiscation of your driver’s license, longer suspensions of your driver’s licence, higher fines, impoundment and forfeiture of your car, and increased costs related to the return of your driving privileges. Forfeiture of the car means you never get it back. You could even lose your car if you loan it to someone who you knew or should have known was going to drink and drive. Most people do not understand the circumstances which will put them in violation of the law. The use of the phrase "drunk driving” is actually wrong and misleading today. Ohio law uses the phrase ‘driving under the influence,” which is much less than being what most people think of when they hear the word drunk.” The applicable Ohio law defines ‘‘under the influence” as: That the defendant consum-ed some alcohol, whether small or great, that it adversely affected and appreciably impaired the defendant’s actions, reaction, or mental process under the circumstances then listing and deprived him of that clearness of intellect and control of himself which he would otherwise have possessed- The question is not how •^uch alcohol would affect an ordinary person. The question ls what effect did any alcohol, consumed by the defendant, have on him at the time and Place involved. If the consumption of alcohol so affected the nervous system, hrain, or muscles of the defendant so as to impair, to an appreciable degree, his ability to °Perate the vehicle, then the defendant was under the influence.” The amount of drinking which will cause many people to be in violation of the Ohio aw can be very small. People ®lso misunderstand the diference between being under the influence and failing a breath test. These are two completely differences, which will result in the driver being issued two different tickets. The breath test violation simply means that your blood alcohol content (BAG) is above the legal limit (.197o) and nothing else. Your ability to drive has nothing to do with this. You can be over the legal BAG limit and not be under the influence, but you are still inviolation of the law. In fact, at trial for the BAG violation, an attempt to testify that your driving skills were not impaired can be objected to as inadmissible evidence by the prosecutor. Ohio’s law against drinking and driving continue to undergo changes making these offenses more serious, with tougher consequences. The costs associated with violations of these laws can be great, and the effects of a conviction will be felt for many years. On top of these legal punishments lies the moral issue that you could end up killing or maiming another individual, maybe a mother, father, wage earner upon whom others depend, or even a child. If this occurs, the weight of carrying that guilt will never go away. The most responsible, and legal, action to take when you have been drinking, whether at a restaurant during dinner or by Dennis N. LoConti Attorney at Law (216) 975-9700 at a bar, is to give your keys to someone who has not been drinking. Let your spouse, friend or a cab drive you home. AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA, JANUARY 20, 1994 AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA, JANUARY 20, 1994 6 Polka Travelin’ in 1994 By Tony Petkovšek The “hot” spots are the places to be during the drastic winter months in Cleveland. From various destinations in the Caribbean including Mexico, to the islands of Hawaii; they can’t be beat. On January 15, the Stan Mejac Band featuring Duke Marsic departed out of New Orleans on the Enchanted Seas ship of Commodore Cruise Lines for an Oktoberfest-style Caribbean cruise called “Alpine Echoes at Sea,” with 86 people aboard. In February it’s “Kruisin with Kravos” on Cunard’s Crown Jewel to the Eastern Caribbean, and in March Kollander Travel’s 25th anniversary All Star Tour to Hawaii will feature California’s Gary Seibert Band, Las Vegas’ Roman Possedi, and Cleveland’s Jeff Pecon. Our popular “Polka Brunches” at the Holiday Inn Wickliffe will feature Bob Kravos on February 6; the Alpine Sextet on March 6, and Joe Fedorchak April 10. These monthly events are gaining in popularity all the time and reservations are available at $10.95 for adults, $5.95 for children by calling the Holiday Inn - Lillie’s Restaurant at 585-2750. The event takes place from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. For Spring and Summer, Branson seems like a great bet! This tiny town within the Missouri Ozark region boasts of over 30 theaters, mostly of a country western vein, but many now with top quality entertainers like Bobby Vinton, Andy Williams, and Shoji Tabuchi. Kollander Travel, your polka tour headquarters, has an April 17 departure (by plane and bus) with button box musicians Jack Perme and Ron Likovič plus the third annual summer jaunt with Youngstown promoter Gene Fedorchak is on July 17. Slovenia tours in Summer will be highlighted by the KSKJ Catholic fraternal society marking 100 years; Girard musician Tony Klepec; and Barberton’s Frankie Spetich. In September, another fraternal, AMLA, hosts its heritage tour right after Labor Day. Meanwhile Youngstown’s Joe Fedorchak Orchestra is also going to the Oktoberfest in Munich plus Alpine areas on September 29. Look for polka cruise specials in Fall with a few polka favorites including the Joey Tomsick Orchestra. For further details on any of the above, call Kollander at 692-1000. Podboy’s Polka Day Jan. 16 The Bob Kravos orchestra, which has sponsored tributes in the past to Polka Stash and Tony Vadnal, present another testimonial on Sunday, January 16 at Collinwood Slovenian Home, 15810 Holmes Avenue. This year’s event honors promoter Mike Podboy, a tavern keeper in Euclid. Mike was recently honored by the Polka Hall of Fame on November 27 and the Dear Friends Ensemble reccorded a selection entitled “Podboy’s Polka” featuring button accordion honorees Kathy Hlad and Ron Likovič. The Slovenian community’s own “Santa Claus,” Mike Podboy, and his family, span many years in the tavern business going back to the Sylvia Cafe in Collinwood and Tip Toe Inn on Woodland. He is probably best known for his Podboy’s Lounge on Lake Shore Boulevard in Euclid next to the Lake and Shore Including visits to Austria. Al Koporc, Jr. Piano Technician (216) 481-1104 U.S. Presidents Benjamin Harrison Benjamin Harrison was the 23rd President of the United States, 1889-1893. He served one term. He was the grandson of William Henry Harrison, our nation’s 9th President. Born on August 20, 1833 at North Bend, Ohio, Harrison was a graduate of Miami University and had been a general in the Union Army. He practiced law in Indianapolis. He adopted a “front-porch” campaign, just the opposite of his grandfather’s rousing carnival atmosphere. Benjamin Harrison was content to sit on his front porch and make short speeches to delegations who visited him in Indianapolis. His Democratic opponent, Grover Cleveland, won the popular vote, but not the electoral vote. It was Harrison’s misfortune to have a financial depression begin toward the end of his second term. He died March 13, 1901 of pneumonia, at age 67 and is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. This Historical Series is sponsored by.......... The church, newly renovated, was decorated for the joyous celebration of the birth of The Savior. The lights in the church were subdued and the glow of candlelight flickering off the Paintings and statuary presented a beautiful and peaceful setting for the concert. It was obvious that the director, John Srsen, was engaged in a labor of love as he obtained from his choir the sensitivity and beauty originally written into the melodies by the composer. Parishioners of St. Vitus are certainly blessed with a treasure in their choir and director. The quality of this choir is unsurpassed by any I have heard. It is incredible that the church did not have a turn-away crowd. Unfortunately, some never know what they possess until they lose it. Thank you for a beautiful Christmas gift. Janezom Drnovškom in zunanjim ministrom Lojzetom Peterletom. To dokazujejo u-spešna preiskovalna pogajanja o pridruženem članstvu v Evropsko zvezo, uspešno napredovanje pogajanj o sklenitvi prostetrgo-vinske cone z državami članicami Efte in vrsta podpisanih ali skoraj že podpisanih sporazumov z državami t. i. Franceta Habjana in dr. Davida Stermoleta.
