Napo-vedujejo liberalni režim in konec diktature, fclvkovičeva lajava __ Belgrad, 5. apr. Marinkovičevo vlado tvorijo vsi prejšnji ministri in so bili sinoči ob 6. Do konvencije imamo še dobro leto časa. He stands one figure in the great human pageant, and cannot be taken out of the plcture: cannot be cut out from the background—that background of a thousand ages, and of iHnumerable women and men. He betongs to tbe greSt human famlly: he *l*o, is in the Milky Way. Oid families, and noble families aro made of parili-ment or paper: there is but one real family of flesh and blood, and that reaches back to the clot of jelly in the se a, and we aH belong to it. When I hear some little Brick Lane Brother talki ng about the true falth, as taught in a tin chapel in Upper Tooting, I think of the star-readers of the Aryan hills, of the dead gods, of the obliterated beliefs of ancient conquerors, long since eaten by worms, and of the shrivclled corpse in the museum wbo has lain grinnlng in his sandhole fofthirty thousand y*ars, amongst hi« grave pota, and ghost chsrms, and the uneaten food for the long journey to the great beyond. I hear honorable members pratlng in the House about "Imperiol questidns," I think of the famished seamstress, the unemployed docker, the girl with the phossy jaw, vrhom the honorable gentleman "represents." When I* read of the gorgeous stage-^anagem«mt of the royal pag-eanta, I remember the graves of the. Balaclava men. in the Manchester workhouse field, whem the sods wcre s p read out level over the neglected dead. When I s*e beautlful sculptures and paintings of Greek womSnhood, I remember how, coming out of the art galter? where I had been looking at the pieture of Andromache, I saw a white-haired old Englisbwoman carrying a grsat bag of cinders on her bent old back. When I hear the angelic volces of the choirs, and aee the golden plate on cathedral altar«, I ask myself ques-tions about that Bridge of Sighs where London aremen drown themselves in their despsir, and about that chlld in tha workhouse school who ta med a mouse because he must have Bomething to love. When a callovv preacher babbles to his grown-u^ congregatlon about sin and human nature, I remember the men and women I have known: the soldlers, the navvies, the colliers, the dpctors, the lawy«rs, the authors, the artists; I remember the dancing rooms ln the gprrison towns, and the girls, and how they were womanly in their degrii-dation, and sweet in spite of their shame; and I won-dered what the reverend gentleman woud answer them if th*y spoke to him as they often spoke to me, in words that were straight as blades, and cut as deep. And often, when I mlx with the crowds in the street«, or at the theatre,- or in public assemblies, I feel thst I am in the presence of the haunted past, and the whole human story unfolds itself to my mind: the primeval savage with "his fell of hair," fighting with other savages, under "branchlng elm, «tar-proef"; the Ethi-oplan ararrior In his battle chariot; the bent slave soiling on the pyramid; the armed knight errant, • foraying, and redresslng.sentimental wrongs; the fesr-lesa Viking, crossing oceana in his open galley, to dis-cover continents; the gladiator in the Roman arena; the Greek Stoics, diseoursing at the fountain; Draf? singeing the King of Spain's beard; St. Francis preseh-ing to the bjrds; the Buddha, giving his body to the« famished tigress; the Arysn at the plough, the Ph^e-nician in his bark, the Californian seeking the gold, tho whaler amongst the ioe, the ancient Briton in hi« world—aH the mysterious and fascinating human drama of love and hate, of hunger and riehea, and laughtr r and tears, and aongs and sobbings, and dancing and drunkenness, and naarriage and battle, and heroism and tamavdice, and murder and robh*ry, and the que«i of God. • Thst aronderful human mystery-plsy, how softly it touchos us, how deeply it,mov*s us,*with its hum of myriad voicea, ita vision of White arms, snd flsshinK weapons, and bockoning fingera, and asking look«, and tha ripple of ita laughter, like the muaic of hidden streaiha in leafy woods, and the llsp of Ks unnumberv' feet, and th* w*ird rhythm of its war aong«, and the pathos of its joy-belln, and the pity of Rs follie«, and ita failures. and iti erimes—the pity; "the pity of it. Iago, th* pity of R." Possessed, then by this dreaming habit, this Janu*-like b*tit at mtnd, 1 csnnot think of th* Bottom Dok s part from th* whole bloodstained, tearsUined tragdv of man's inhumsnity to msn. For the Bottom Dok i« a chlld of aH the ages, he plays his part in a drama whereof the scene is laid in the Milky Way. He mcslU to us the long wavering var bettoeen darkne«« and Hgkt, th« llfe apd death straggle of the brate to be a man. the painful never-ceaslng effort of man to understand. (Ta ke matisasd.)
