Each year, the display gets bigger and bigger with a huge lighted multi-colored rainbow added this year as well as electrically lighted figures skating on a pond. Also newly featured is a 30-foot high lighted castle. Tour buses as well as many cars seek out the display and slow down to enjoy the magnificent outdoor setting. There is a large stable with statues of the holy family. Grazing nearby are live animals which would be seen in a real barn scene such as sheep and pheasants. Appropriately, one of the sheep is pregnant and about to give birth. John does the actual construction of the various lighted trees and figures in one of his machine shops. They are stored there for the summer. John says it’s almost a full time job getting the display finished each year. He and an artist draw up theme plans along with the retired head of General Electric’s Christmas tree lighting design for the beautiful Christmas tree set up each year in the White House in Washington, D.C. Although the outdoor display is already one of the biggest in the area, John says he is already thinking about next year’s show. He says there are about 50,000 light bulbs lit this year, powered through four transformers. “But next year, it will be even bigger,” he says. He is almost finished making a kaleidoscope which will be eight-feet in diameter with constantly changing colored light patterns. “We had to design a computer for the intricate lighting.” He says next year the skaters will be animated, the rainbow flowing and another 50,000 lights will be added, making a total of 100,000 lights. John and Pat were hosts to an 85th birthday party on New Year’s Day for Pat’s mother Alice Opalich. About 100 family members attended the buffet-style catered dinner which was followed by a grand pinochle tournament. We are dreaming of walking through the flower garden and of growing fresh vegetables. It all seems so distant now. We are a year older, but are we also wiser? Have we learned from our past mistakes and from history in general? We put a lot of effort into planning and preparing our gardens, but are we also preparing ourselves spiritually for a new growth? Comments: P.O. Box 99957, Cleveland, OH 44199-0957 Do you have telefonitis? One gray, dull morning you get up. You have a phone call to make. Yawning, you pick up the handset. Scratching that itch on your chin, you listen for the dial tone. You punch up the first couple of numbers. The dial tone is still on and no dial clicks are heard. You hang up. If you don’t succeed at first, try, try again. This time you notice that not only are there no clicks, but the LED display is blank! You dial the 800 number (on another telephone) per instructions in the telset manual. A pretty, young voice answers cheerfully. You spill your tortured woes to a sympathetic and understanding soul. She asks for symptoms. As you list them she types them into an all-knowing computer. You confirm all the symptoms. “It is static electricity','” she announces bravely and authoritatively. Then she proceeds to enumerate the corrective steps to take in order to affect an electrostatic discharge and thus restore the instrument to its pristine state of communicating with the outside world. First you disconnect the instrument from the telephone line. Secondly you remove the 4 small type AA cells completely out of the telset. Third- ly let the set stand for 8 hours. This is a good time to install a fresh set of AA cells. Very carefully observe the polarity, the - and 2, marked on the battery case. A good idea is to label the date of installation for future reference. Now comes the task of installing important telephone numbers into the memory. This procedure can be done with the instrument disconnected, or with the handset hung up. Check the fire, police, 911, and ADT numbers for your community. Remember: Red for fire, Blue for police, and Green for Medics. Finally, always actually check the critical numbers. In fact it is a good idea to check the circuits from time to time. Immediately upon connection notify the dispatcher that Jhere is no emergency, that you are merely checking the integrity of the circuit. In that way the dispatcher is immediately at ease. In my case, living in Euclid, I had the surprise of some dispatcher in Garfield Heights, a nearby suburb, answering. I duly notified Euclid as well as Ohio Bell as instructed. (Three weeks later, the circuit still had not been corrected, for our neighborhood. Eventually, it was.) You do not realize until an emergency arises, how important it is that all circuits are working properly. While precious seconds are lost, looking up the emergency number, or getting the wrong number, may spell a fatality or I disaster in the home or at work. —Joseph Zelle Enjoys various articles Editor: I enjoy your articles about Fantje na Vasi, Cilka Dolgan, Frank Yankovic and all the general news about Slovenia and Slovenes in Slovenia and America. Rate subect to change without notice The fire and the fury (Continued from last week) Chapter IV - Part II The Old Timers by Stane J. Kuhar It was Cyril’s manner to kid with Father Gralc. That was jq the manner with Father Gralc, once you got to know him. Bpt there was a mutual respect with one another and whenever Father Gralc needed assistance with a parish project Cyril would always be willing to help. “Well,” said Father Gralc, “if the food isn’t worth the price then I’ll make sure Father Hrodik has the 10:30 Mass this Sunday. You know how his sermons are — starting in one area, going to another, and another, until you have so many topics that he simply tells the congregation ‘and God is with us. Let us pray’.” Cyril drifted back to the kitchen. “John,” asked Father Gralc, “you still seemed puzzled about what happened to Stara Mama. You know that we do not know when the hour of our time is up, but we must have faith that she is with her Maker.” “It is not” said John, “that I’m puzzled by her death. I’ve accepted the fact that it was her time to go home. What is puzzling me are the remarks she made to me just before she had her heart attack.” “What remarks, may I ask, did she make to you,” asked Father Gralc. “Well, she kept referring to a sentence. She kept saying ‘I am forever of the land. I am forever of the land.’ I just don’t know what that means. Do you have any clues?” “John,” said Father Gralc with a dumb-struck face, “don’t you understand what she was trying to tell you? It’s a saying that the old timers in the area always used to refer to whenever spring or fall would roll around. , “It meant that it was either planting or harvesting time for their vegetables. Or to replace the weeds with flowers. “It’s also an old meaning in Slovenian that whenever you had anything of importance you would take a canister, stuff it with wrapped paper, and bury it into the ground. This was used particularly during the two world wars to put valuable objects, like gold, silver...” Then the world turned upside down on Father Gralc as much as with John. “John! Are you thinking what I’m thinking? That Stara Mama had buried something of importance in her garden and did not want to tell anyone about it?” Grdina — Faulhaber Funeral Homes 17010 Lake Shore Blvd. 4703 Superior Ave. 531-6300 Funeral Facilities Available Throughout Lake County 944-3300 A TRUSTED TRADITION FOR 85 YEARS £ook
